Two articles of impeachment against President Trump. Its the final stage before a vote in the house on impeachment itself which is expected next week. And american stocks have been given a boost after the us and china struck a preliminary trade agreement, easing tensions between the worlds two biggest economies. More now on the election. It was a terrible night for the liberal democrats, who now have just 11 members of palriament. Who now have just 11 members of parliament. Jo swinson was elected leader injuly this year, but last night lost her own seat in dunbartonshire east. Our chief political correspondent, vicki young, assesses the future of the liberal democrats as an electoral force. Applause her leadership over, it didnt even last five months. Jo swinsons decision to push for this election backfired. Some blame herfor hardening the partys anti brexit message and for claiming she could be Prime Minister, which few took seriously. Im proud that liberal democrats have been the unapologetic voice of remain in this election, giving people the chance to choose to stop brexit. Obviously, it hasnt worked and i, like you, am devastated about that, but i dont regret trying. And she spoke about the personal criticism thats come her way. Being myself, whether people attacked my vision or my voice, my ideas or my earrings, one of the realities of smashing glass ceilings is that a lot of broken glass comes down on your head. Once again, Party Workers left distraught, after a dismal general election performance. Many blame a shift in policy in september, when the lib dems said theyd cancel brexit if they won the election. It was distinctive, but undemocratic, according to some. I think weve, in a way, become more extreme, and we came across as a party with an extreme position on brexit, and we gave people a positive reason to vote against us, including many traditional supporters. For most lib dem candidates today, there were messages of commiseration, not congratulation. Thanks so much. Thank you. In wimbledon, paul kohler narrowly lost out. He thinks its time for labour and the lib dems to work together. We need to learn some lessons. We have to give credit to our opponents, but learn the lesson. They combined. The brexit party and the conservatives formed an alliance, thats why we lost. Progressive liberals didnt. We formed an alliance with the greens, but progressive liberals in the labour party werent on board. There were some huge increases in the lib dem vote almost four million backed them this time but in many places, it wasnt enough. Wimbledon was a typical liberal democrat target seat, held by the conservatives, an area that voted heavily to remain in the eu. The party ran an energetic local campaign, but so did labour. The remain vote was split and the conservative re elected, with a majority ofjust over 600. This election was a huge opportunity for the lib dems, but their dreams of stopping brexit have fallen by the wayside. Vicki young, bbc news, wimbledon. Now on bbc news, its the last edition of election cast. Hello, and welcome to what i think is going to be the last election cast over, a little tear there. But it is going to be a biggie because of the massive election result. I have some company in the studio. My name is ayesha hazarika, a former labour adviser. Mathew elliot former ceo of vote leave. You have a note pad, ican ceo of vote leave. You have a note pad, i can tell you are a former ceo. A clean white shirt on. I have not shaved. Me neither. What have you been doing since the accident . Just trying to process the sheer shock of that victory. I thought it might bea shock of that victory. I thought it might be a majority of 20 so since then thinking about the future of then thinking about the future of the labour party and fighting with people. You are famous as a fisherman, how did borisjohnson pull this off . Tactician. Fisherman, how did borisjohnson pull this off . Tactician. This was all about electing a government who would deliver brexit and the lesson for the other parties is they have not heard what the party said in 2016 and they ignored the voice of the public and the frustrations have built up and up as parliament has delayed thing and this was the final cry of the public to say get this thing done. I want to speak directly to those who made it possible and to all those who voted for us for the first time and those whose pencils may have wavered over the ballot and who heard the voices of their parents and grandparents whispering anxiously and there is. I say thank you for the trust you have placed in us and in me and we will work around the clock to repay your trust and to deliver on your priorities with a parliament that works for you. And then i want to speak also to those did not vote for us or speak also to those did not vote for us or for me and who want and still wa nt us or for me and who want and still want to remain in the eu and i want you to know that we, in this one nation conservative government, will never ignore your good and positive feelings. The stonking majority, does that disguise the fact that actually in some places it is not that he has converted lifelong labour voters but it is just a moment in time when they were prepared to cross a Different Box . You are absolutely right. This was a vote to get brexit done. A lot in the manifesto that would help the conservative state, lots of emphasis on the northern powerhouse, infrastructure spending, spending on the nhs but it is fair to say he has this parliament to earn their support, to get them to vote for conservative mps again. It will be like a rolling general Election Campaign . That is modern day politics. Lots of talk about how the conservative party is quite different now. Borisjohnson is representing new people. Does that mean it would be a new person . That is the big question. Is it going to be this sort of guardian of the more brexit wing of the party. Telling and slightly chilling that one of the people tweeting her support for this new administration was a katie hopkins, back to nationalism rule. He saying one thing but the party has had to suck up a lot of people more to the far right. It will be interesting to see which Boris Johnson we will get. Lots of people in brussels have been texting me on the eu side and they say there is open space for a softer brexit or maybe even to extend the transition period beyond 2020. Ijust think brussels is getting the wrong end of the thing about borisjohnson brussels is getting the wrong end of the thing about Boris Johnson again. Lets not forget, theyre two visions of the accident. You had nigel farage and his crowd, perhaps more nationalistic and then i would say they vote leave. What boris embodied, like michael gove with a more internationalist brexit where they felt the eu was constraining britain, to protectionist and they wa nted britain, to protectionist and they wanted to have free trading across the world and playing a bigger role so the world and playing a bigger role soi the world and playing a bigger role so i see boris implementing that more liberal internationalist brexit. Isnt it just more liberal internationalist brexit. Isnt itjust going to be hard. How is going to reconcile the position because has one this landslide because of the nigel farage landslide because of the nigel fa rage followers landslide because of the nigel farage followers as well and i want to replay the whole referendum thing but one of the great things was there was no real clarity on what brexit was offered to so he is going to have to try to appeasing these two visions. An appeasement and brexit do not go hand in hand. Two visions. An appeasement and brexit do not go handinhand. One of the reasons resonate pursued the customs territory was to protect trade and manufacturing. Art then out lots of jobs trade and manufacturing. Art then out lots ofjobs in manufacturing is they could be at risk . |j out lots ofjobs in manufacturing is they could be at risk . I think he will be able to use a majority to say to the eu he has a huge monday to get the free trade deal but on the contention issue when it came to migration, i would the contention issue when it came to migration, iwould not the contention issue when it came to migration, i would not mistake what you are saying about a populist front migration. When you spoke to vote rs front migration. When you spoke to voters about what people were voting for, they wanted control of migration. If they feel Boris Johnson can bring in a system, like an australian style points system, where the risk control and government is accountable for it, and with the government with a majority of 78 there will be accountable for migration, than people feel the government is listening. But what does that mean . Government has been responsible for migration, that is one of the functions of having borders. We do not have uncontrolled migration. It is with the eu. But we have not had unfettered immigration and a lot of the fears in the Brexit Campaign we re of the fears in the Brexit Campaign were about people coming from countries where we do not have freedom of Movement Like turkey. I have had one nation tories saying that boris is really liberal on immigration but in the last week of the election, he said inflammatory and hurtful things like saying immigrants cannot come into this country and treat it like their own. Either seeds of his defeat sown in his victory . I do not think so. He is talking about an amnesty. Why did he say that in the last week of the campaign . He wanted to emphasise the fa ct campaign . He wanted to emphasise the fact he wanted to control eu migration. Those words were much taking. They were putting a flag in the ground in the more nigel farage territory rather than the borisjohnson of old, lets have an amnesty. Lets see what happens but he will govern along those lines. So did he say one thing to get elected and then do something else. Because politicians have never done that before. Nikki campbell with a range of views. I cannot believe these labour voters who voted the tories in there. I cannot believe it it is doing my head in that is what this country has come to. The nhs is target, everything is nugget. Why not have a Labour Government . If Jeremy Corbyn was not good we could have got rid of him. I am absolutely fuming. If you saw one of your mates now. I met one this afternoon. Did he vote conservative . He voted brexit and thatis conservative . He voted brexit and that is voting conservative. I am going to say thanks for putting the tories and the government. I cannot believe we have a tory and he here i want believe we have a tory and he here iwant them believe we have a tory and he here i want them to deliver what they have promised and deliver brexit. This is not about brexit, i am a voter in what is known as the red while and i have never thought it would go to a tory but all the people did not want to vote for Jeremy Corbyn and to say this is about rex that would be really, really silly. Brexit. About rex that would be really, really silly. Brexit. The first quy really silly. Brexit. The first guy, it will end up in a brawl. you are in that part, let us know how it goes. What for us a bit that really crystallised it all . It was just. Literally everything. It has been like a horror film. Just. Literally everything. It has been like a horrorfilm. It just. Literally everything. It has been like a horror film. It was the exit poll. We worried about how labour was going to do. I had lots of reservations but i tried to make yourself see the positives and maybe the labour brand will hold up better even though jeremy the labour brand will hold up better even thoutheremy corbyn is quite unpopular and maybe people see Boris Johnson for the charlatan he is and maybe well get Hung Parliament but it was very sobering. Listening to those callers, what does that tell you about whether country is . It shows the country wants to get brexit done and for me the iconic moment was tony blairs field, sedgefield, and also we could have seen sedgefield, and also we could have seen conservative mps in places where it the brexit party was standing. Even though the drama is over, the conundrum has been solved, people are not happy and relaxed. People are not united and on friendly terms. Imean, id i mean, id made your massive discipline, but dont think you can just say this was all about getting brexit done i admire. You have to concede that some of this is about how unpopularJeremy Corbyn was and if there was another, if there was a different labour leader that was not polling as badly people might have, you know, even if they had been levers, they may have held their nose and voted another way. There are still great anxieties about other things, you know, public services, and it does not feel like the country has come together over this. It still feels like it is incredibly divided. Chris mason has p0p incredibly divided. Chris mason has pop in. Sit down, catch your breath. All right, lets talk aboutJeremy Corbyn then. Here is what he had to say in an interview on friday morning. Have a listen to this. Ive done everything i could to lead this party, done everything they could to develop its policies and since i became leader membership has more than doubled and the party has developed a very serious, radical, yes, but serious and fully costed ma nifesto. Yes, but serious and fully costed manifesto. And ive received more personal abuse than any other leader has ever received by a great deal of the media. Now, that happens all the time. I will talk to our National Executive about what we do in the future. I called for, last night, a period of reflection in the party. And, obviously, the ruling body of the party, our National Executive, will decide what process we follow them for an election for a successor for me. And i was prepared, and doubled this, until that takes place. I am not an expert in latin, what is the opposite of mea culpa . It almost sounds like he won and he is complaining that you are not being nice enough to me. Ive found it extraordinary. It was like abc, anyone but corbyn, it was tony blair, the chief rabbi, it was maureen lipman, the daily mail, it was election cast, it was literally everything. I think there was a lack of contrition and a lack of humility. Wn of contrition and a lack of humility. Wii u of contrition and a lack of humility. Wii u goes watching the labour campaignerJeremy Corbyn and laughing the whole time were you guys . I think all the opposition parties. The key point was when it came to the brexit point they hadnt accepted the result. And i will be fascinated to see, come the 31st of january, where we leave the Political Institutions of the eu, presumably we will be into the labour leadership Election Campaign oi labour leadership Election Campaign or the reflection parties talk about, what will the policy be . Will they accept that we have left the eu oi they accept that we have left the eu or will it be the same policy . Ditto with the lib dems. At what point will they catch where we are . with the lib dems. At what point will they catch where we are . If the lib dems of your massive cheque to change your political worldview and work for them, what would you tell them to do, as a strategist . You cant even bring yourself to. Them to do, as a strategist . You cant even bring yourself to. When it comes to labour, except brexit, extinguish anti semitism from the labour party. And then produce a ma nifesto labour party. And then produce a manifesto that appeals to the public, not to party members. When you say just except public, not to party members. When you sayjust except brexit, and dont rerun the whole thing, but a lot of people in this country, you guys lot of people in this country, you guys won lot of people in this country, you guys won by a very narrow margin. There are a lot of people in this country who are not. It is four victories, it is the referendum, 2017, european elections, it is last night. In the same way that your side never ever quite accepted the result from the 1970s and kept questing for this moment, you cant just like well the desire in ardent europeans as well. And youve got a problem north of the border with scotland, were scotland is a majority remain country talking about the will of the people. If Nicola Sturgeon gets another clean sweep at the Scottish Parliamentary elections on a mandate that they wa nt elections on a mandate that they want another referendum. In 2021. Its very. Is not as simple as saying except the result. What about the coming discussion afterjanuary 31 about what brexit looks like . Because by that stage the uk is out of the european union, yes, it is a transition period, but it is the future relationship with the eu. And we know that the timetable, as set out by the Prime Minister, is mighty tight. And, i guess, the easiest way to meet a deadline when the deadline is tight to keep things relatively close to where they are. But, of course, for plenty of brexiteers disentangling and moving some distance the whole cherished aim. Id just wonder, once we are into that discussion, where we might end up, given how tight the deadline is given that the premise wont to break his promise. Two points on this, think it is easy to get a trade deal than people generally say. They always talk about the seven year canadian eu trade deal. With this you are starting with the similar regulatory systems or similar regulatory systems or similar regulations stop the second point is this, one reason brexit has been taking up so much man with politically and in the media is because of the Hung Parliament, because of the Hung Parliament, because of the constant debates and vote every week and knife edge both and that sort of thing. When you are and that sort of thing. When you are a Prime Minister with a big majority, those stories will go away. We will start to write domestic matters as well. Is the coming labour leadership context by predictable . Can you see who will stand, what will happen . One thing that we can say, there will be civil war breaking out in the labour party right now. I think the runners and riders, there is an appetite for a female leader. We will definitely see, i think, female leader. We will definitely see, ithink, Angela Rayner, emily thornberry, rebecca long bailey, Angela Rayner and rebecca long bailey were seen to have very good Election Campaigns. They were sort of put forward, promoted very heavily by the leadership. But i think it is going to be interesting to see what any moderates do. If someone to see what any moderates do. If someone like Jess Phillips going to put her name forward . Would she have a chance . Put her name forward . Would she have a chance . What did the membership, what is the membership of the labour. You are having a conversation before a came here, what is the fluidity of the membership of the labour party, the membership of the labour party, the members are quite sketchy. The 300,000 corbynistas will vanish overnight. Dont know how many are still there, dont know how many will be rejoining of a lot of more moderate members, will the will be rejoining of a lot of more moderate members, willthe nec will be rejoining of a lot of more moderate members, will the nec do chicanery with the free state and sadie free state is now the minute the exit poll landed . These things are up for discussion. One thing i will say is that i think, i have just been speaking to somebody before a came out he was from the trade union movement, there is going to bea trade union movement, there is going to be a huge rush for recrimination andl to be a huge rush for recrimination and i am not going to be holier than thou, im definitely part of that. But we have got to not lose sight of the fact that there was quite a lot of stuff that actually did bring the labour Party Together eventually, look, corbett is, i dont think has worked. However he has the narrative on spending and austerity. Even the conservative party has moved and broken its own rules. I think for the labour party to just broken its own rules. I think for the labour party tojust rip broken its own rules. I think for the labour party to just rip all of that up and from a physical point of viewjust to go back to where we we re viewjust to go back to where we were saying Alistair Darling or ed balls, that is not the answer. We cantjust balls, that is not the answer. We cant just keep hankering balls, that is not the answer. We cantjust keep hankering after, oh my god, we need tony blair back stop we need to reformulate our new vision for now. We cantjust be so nostalgic for 1997. You have your phone on the table. Have any leadership contender started lobbying you already . leadership contender started lobbying you already . I have had it ona lobbying you already . I have had it on a plane mode. Laughter. Matthew, quick question about brexit and when we get to next year after january 31, wonder why your take is on, psychologically, where the country will be once we have legally left, but, of course, in practical terms not a lot will have james because we will still be in the transition period. There will be a discussion about what the future relationship looks like. I wonder, psychologically, for a lot of people, how much that will feel like actually getting brexit done was met because they will be able big symbolic moment, the flag will come down, the meps will come home. think the ambassador will just change hisjob think the ambassador will just change his job title. Think the ambassador will just change hisjob title. They think the ambassador will just change his job title. They dont think it will be that dramatic. will be the ambassador to the eu. What will happen to the ferrera rush hour . The catering is. I guess, helping that momentous perceived, i cant help but think it will be quite big in shaping where we are politically around the discussion that happens about what the future relationship looks like, even though we will be in a transition when nothing will have changed in all but a legal sense we are still in. It will be very big. We will be leaving the Political Institutions. But i think people realise there is another phase to go. People realise there is that trade phase. What i will be interested is will they do in parallel to the deal with the eu, deals with the us and other countries as well . And with the us president ial election taking place next year, there is really a six month window where they could start that us trade deal going before President Trump may be out of office. Do you think dominic plumb is will stay out of number 10 . He was only going to stay there until the 30th of october brexit happen. He definitely will. As it was the stage of reforming whitehall. There is more to do. The famous, page 48 of the conservative manifesto. Reforming the house of lords, the voting system. The judiciary. Have they got really big, big plans . He has got a plan. Read his blog have you spoken to Dominic Cummings . You are sounding definitive about him staying on. Is that news we have committed . I have not spoken to him but im fairly sure he will. Another broken promise. Thank you both very much. Thank you forjoining us for a bit. I thought i should join you for a bit. On this momentous day. It has been. What a story. Hello. It may be a windy, showery, and quite cold weekend to come but at least there will be some sunshine occasionally. Here is the picture, low pressure dominating the scene, these disturbances moving on through, with drier, brighter gaps and the isobars quite close together. It is going to be blustery out there. Too much wind, really, to allow too much anyway of frost to start the day on saturday. Just a few pockets in scotland, maybe one or two icy patches around as well. For many of us there will be sunny spells from the word go. But showers are coming. This area moving north and east across england and wales. Throughout the day, a feed of showers coming into northern ireland, wintery on hills. And into scotland, particularly in the west, frequent showers here. Heavy downpours at lower levels. Some heavy snow to some of the hills here. So walkers take note of that. It is going to be a blustery day. These are some of the wind gusts and the winds will get stronger again later in the day, down towards the south west of england, in particular, as another batch of wet weather starts to move in. And as for those temperatures, most of us in single figures, many of us just into mid single figures. Now, lets just run on through saturday night and follow this area of wet weatherfeeding north across more of england and wales. Could well be seeing some hill snow out of that through wales, parts of northern england, even into the midlands, to relatively low hills at that. Northern ireland and scotland still seeing some snow falling in some of the hills here. It looks a bit colder across Northern Britain to start off on sunday morning. Icy in places. And again, dont be surprised, if its fairly wintry on fairly modest hills through parts of wales, northern england, perhaps the midlands, as we start off on sunday morning. But then on sunday there is a little bit of a gap between weather systems, where more of us will be dry and get to see the sunshine before this comes in later in the day. Still a bit of uncertainty about timing. But, yes, it does look quiter for a time on sunday, with some sunshine. Perhaps a bit more widespread than it was on saturday. Still a few of these showers delivering snow to the hills of scotland, mind you. And then as we go on through the afternoon, its across parts of southern england and wales well start to see this next system moving in with outbreaks of showery rain, just putting the wind gusts on again. Maybe not as windy for some of us but the winds really strengthening down towards others and South West England again. Later today, eventually because it gusts around 60 mph. Similar temperatures. It is going to be chilly. Then again occasionally we will find ourselves in the sunshine. So to sum up the weekend then, there will be sunshine occasionally. It is going to be windy. It will be wet at times. And some of us will see some snow. And maybe not just on the high hills. Hello and welcome to bbc news. The british Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has hailed the conservatives resounding election victory as extraordinary and urged people across the uk to heal their divisions over brexit. Speaking in downing street, mrjohnson said he would repay the trust of labour supporters, who had voted conservative for the first time. The labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn says he will stand down, but he hasnt said when. And in scotland the scottish nationalists made further gains. Lets hear first from Boris Johnson. Iam forming i am forming a new government and on monday mps will. Mps will set out from constituencies that have never returned conservative mps for 100 yea rs. Returned conservative mps for 100 years. They will have an overwhelming mandate to get brexit done and we will honour that mandate late january
