Some promises, to protect the supply chains of the manufacturing industry, and those industries say you cant reconcile that with leaving without a trade deal, and into this comes the president of the united states, essentially make an offer via twitter in his congratulations to the Prime Minister saying that a deal with the us would be more lucrative than any deal with the eu, a choice, a trade off that will affect sectors, regions and voters, and a choice in the hands of the Prime Minister. Thank you. Last night, we saw the kind of political change across much of the uk that, a decade ago, would have seemed unthinkable. The starkest examples of that change are the seats represented for generations by labour, but now in conservative hands. Our special correspondent ed thomas has been in West Bromwich west, in the west midlands, to take a look at the new political landscape. Look beyond the cities, and move to the towns of the north of england, the midlands, to make sense of this election. To the people in constituencies like West Bromwich west. Singing. And listen. Congratulations, borisjohnson. To the voices of wednesbury. Its happened, its absolutely amazing. Does it feel like youve woken up in a different country . Yeah, ido. Hes going to sort out everything. The poor, nhs, schools, police, immigration. What was the thing that got you voting for him . The one thing . Because he wanted to listen to 17. 4 million people. For the first time in 45 years, this constituency has broken its bonds with labour. Family, generation after generation for the working class. Labour voter, labour voter, labour voter. Yeah, yeah, definitely. And now that has all changed. Yeah. And you have woken up to a conservative mp, west brom west. Yes. How does that feel . That feels 0k actually. I think its great, its what the country needs. A conservative mp in this area . Yeah, because Jeremy Corbyn is a puppet. And thats the end of it. And thats the issue for you . Yeah, every time. Its about time london listened to the rest of the country. They are listening now. They are now. At last. And for many this demand to be heard has been a three yearjourney. Here, nearly seven out of ten who voted in the 2016 referendum wanted to leave the eu. Take philip, a welder since he left school. How do you feel today . Happy. Hopefully, brexit can finally get done. He feels this election result is a turning point. I believe that borisjohnson is going to sort it out, and by the 31st of january we will be leaving the eu. Weve turned a corner, we have more certainty, hopefully more certainty in the marketplace. Ijust think its the right thing for the uk. Now, a new contract has been made. Trust given to Boris Johnsons conservative party. For the first time by people like lou and jo. Two working mums struggling. How difficult is life at the moment for you two . For me personally very difficult. I come down here just to think about what ive got to do today, how im going to get through, what my finances are like, how im going to get through the day. What is the hope you see in Boris Johnson . He, you know what, he talks the talk and walk the walk. Brexit is going to happen next year. And all the trade deals he has promised to do it. Because you have been told this will be done. Thats what boris has told us, and i want him to. He has made a promise, stick your promise. We are fed up with being failed by the governments. Stick to your promise. Is your vote on loan to Boris Johnson . Yeah, yeah, until he delivers. Old party allegiances have broken down, new loyalties have been born. But for how long . Maybe that depends on promises made, and promises kept. Ed thomas, bbc news, West Bromwich. So, thats it from downing street, where borisjohnson is tonight celebrating a momentous election victory, with an 80 seat majority for the conservatives in the new house of commons. The Prime Minister says he wants to get on with delivering brexit, but also pledged a big drive on domestic issues, focusing on the nhs, and the clear need for greater investment to improve standards of care. Mrjohnson has raised the voters expectations and, with a Strong Majority in parliament, hell now be expected to deliver on all the promises hes made. We leave you tonight with some of the memorable words and images of the general election which changed the electoral map of the uk. Goodnight. Our exit poll is suggesting that there will be a conservative majority. Getting brexit done is now the irrefutable, irresistible, unarguable decision of the british people. I will not lead the party in any future general election campaign. Corbyn was a disaster on the doorstep. Everyone knew that he couldnt lead the working class out of a paper bag. For me, this is about whether the labour party is and has any right to exist. I still believe that we, as a country, can be warm and generous. Scottish national party, 17,000. Cheering. Singing. I did it, everybody. I say thank you for the trust you have placed in us and in me. I urge everyone to find closure and to let the healing begin. And happy christmas. Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are sonia sodha, whos the chief leader writer with the observer, and Sebastian Payne the whitehall correspondent for the ft. Many of tomorrows front pages are already in. A stonking majority, says the financial times, with a photo of Prime Minister borisjohnson and his girlfriend carrie symonds. We did it says the daily mail. The newspaper was one of the conservative leaders most vocal supporters during the election campaign. The battle for the United Kingdom starts now, according to the i newspaper, saying the Scottish National party has pulled the trigger on a new independence campaign. The daily mirror calls the tory majority an election catastrophe. The newspaper also has the story that tv presenter Caroline Flack has been charged with assault on her boyfriend. Tomorrows times has borisjohnsons message that it is time to let the healing begin after the agonies of brexit. The guardian starts the countdown to brexit, with six weeks to go until the uk is due to leave the eu. And an occasional visitor to us here on the papers, the economist magazine, with Boris Johnson striking a slightly less than churchillian victory pose. Lets start with your paper, sebastien, the financial scratch like ft. A stonking mandate. What does that mean . It is Boris Johnsons mandate to govern, what we know of his agenda over the past five weeks. The results of the election took everybody by surprise, i think mostjournalists, most people. The size of a majority, not the fact he got a majority . Indeed, i think everyone thought there would be a conservative majority, they were always points ahead in the polls, when youre in that territory youre going to be in a majority but even within Boris Johnsons own team, they thought there could be a hung parliament. When the exit poll came out at 10pm last night which feels like a lifetime ago, it confirmed the country had decided did not want Jeremy Corbyn as Prime Minister. What you think was the reason sonia for such a big majority . what you think was the reason sonia for such a big majority . I think it is because the conservatives had a very clear message, get brexit which cut through with voters. There is a lot of brexit fatigue with the public, whether people are remainers oi public, whether people are remainers or levers, they want to get brexit done. We wontjust be getting brexit, we will be leaving on the sist brexit, we will be leaving on the 31st of january if brexit, we will be leaving on the 31st ofjanuary if everything goes according to Boris Johnsons 31st ofjanuary if everything goes according to borisjohnsons plan, which im sure it well. After that there will be a lot of negotiations about what comes next. So we will not get brexit done and dusted but the message got through. The other reason the majority was so big was how weak and how badly labour dead. Throughout the campaign, there were reports coming back from mps and activists saying Jeremy Corbyn is a really big problem on the doorstep andl really big problem on the doorstep and i think we have seen a lot from the labourcamp blaming and i think we have seen a lot from the labour camp blaming it on brexit. Brexit had something to do with it but it was notjust that. It was corbins leadership even more. The times, let the healing begin. Borisjohnson did the times, let the healing begin. Boris johnson did talk the times, let the healing begin. Borisjohnson did talk about how he was aware that some people had lent him their vote, traditional labour voters voting tory who may not do so again. Do you think he will govern for all of the people . This will be the big question now because he has talked about being a one nation Prime Minister. The term one nation conservatism is used and abused by different Prime Ministers, every conservative says they want to be one nation, for David Cameron it was about being socially liberal and pushing forward causes such as same sex marriages but if you look at the one nation conservatism Boris Johnson is going for, it will be very different. It will look at the areas in the midlands and the north that have voted tory for the first time and end away going back to a more basic version of what one nation conservatism is which is trying to connect the most poor in society with the richest. If you look at where the tories have won, lots of very prosperous shower seats as well but trying to hold the tent together could produce very interesting politics over the next five years because it is not an easy thing to do and it is very easy to say were going to bring the country back together but nobody has done it for the past three years, it will ta ke for the past three years, it will take a lot of leadership to convince the remainers who are angry with borisjohnson to come on board and that he will produce a european friendly government. The guardian, we dont have too long. They say stop, brexit. That has been the mantra, get brexit done. Do you think in some ways the size of the majority gives borisjohnson more freedom for the kind of trade deal that he negotiates . In other words, for example, he wont be oh prisoner of the erg i do and there is a very big question about next stop brexit but what sort of brexit as it . And i think actually ironically for that yards, for the hard think actually ironically for that yards, forthe hard right think actually ironically for that yards, for the hard right flank of the conservative party, the fact that borisjohnson has such a big majority actually reduces their power and the power in their party, they had a huge amount of power after David Cameron and theresa may, they have held conservative Prime Minister is to ransom over the last nine years. Now i think there influence will decline. I think borisjohnson looking influence will decline. I think Boris Johnson looking forward to his re election prospects in 2024, we may see him start to back away from the very heart brexit represented by the very heart brexit represented by the Withdrawal Agreement to a much softer brexit, more in line with the eu, the cost of that is we become a real taker but the benefits for borisjohnson are real taker but the benefits for Boris Johnson are less economic pain which will be important to his re election in 2024 but also it gives a much bigger chance to keeping the union together and i do not think he wants to go down in history as the minister under whom the union split up. If he goes for the union split up. If he goes for the softer brexit, all the hints we re the softer brexit, all the hints were there, hard brexit, ithink it could lead up to the breaking up of the union. The mirror says it time to start again. Talking about labour, Jeremy Corbyn is going, we do not know when, but he is going. Who will take over . We do not know yet what it looks like it will not bejohn mcdonnell, yet what it looks like it will not be john mcdonnell, has bejohn mcdonnell, has the factual deputy while he has been labour leader. This was an absolute catastrophe as the daily mirror calls it. A labour supporter, the party result is the worst since the second world war, one of the worst ever. As we said earlier, this is a reflection of the brexit question but alsojeremy reflection of the brexit question but also Jeremy Corbyn reflection of the brexit question but alsoJeremy Corbyn and the policies he stood for. The party well now begin a period of reflection to look at what went wrong and labour will have to decide is it going to try corbynism under a new leader or going to make a break and have a new type of politics and new type of personality. A quick look at the ijaz the last one for now. Battle for the United Kingdom against the i. A picture of a very jealous cotton, the against the i. A picture of a veryjealous cotton, the snp dominated. What is the future of the United Kingdom . It all depends on the sort of Brexit Borisjohnson goes for and the type of conservative government we see. If it goes for that softer brexit, i think the chances of scotland staying within the union are higher. I think if he goes for a very hard brexit that makes Scottish Independence much more likely and when you look at Northern Ireland, his Withdrawal Agreement makes Northern Ireland potentially reunify in with ireland more likely as well by putting a border town in the irish sea. Softer brexit becomes much less likely. Already out of ten, we will be back very soon to discuss the papers but that is it for this error. Sonia and sebastian will be back at 11 30 for a longer look at the papers. But for the moment, goodbye. Good evening. We have seen some much brighter drier weather for many parts of the country today. The showers where all or nothing. In sheltered areas like here in gloucestershire it was dry with some sunshine but through the isle of man, for example, shower after shower already earlier on today. Those showers will tend to move north end to southern scotland to bring some snow over the hills. It will turn more dry in the north east of mainland scotland but lots of showers packing in across Northern Ireland, england and wales and a fairly strong wind as well which should on the whole keep temperatures up but it is cut at my touch and go for a touch of frost here and there. Touch and go. A bit more snow on the hail is as far south as mid wells. More showers, driven on by very strong when. The showers will push east across england and wales on saturday morning leaving some drier and sunnier weather in the afternoon. Showers may ease off in Northern Ireland, continue in scotland, especially in the west with more sleet and snow in the hills. Quite a cold day, heading towards the south temperatures may get into double figures but will turn more wet during the evening. As the wet weather comes into england and wales on saturday night, into the cold air, some hailsnow, mainly on saturday night, into the cold air, some hail snow, mainly across wales and northern england. A couple of centimetres by morning. Wet weather moving and does not last too long before it pushes away. Wintry showers continuing overnight into Northern Ireland and scotland. Touch of frost given the showers, the covering of snow over the hills in england in particular may well be some icy patches. Sunday sees more showers, for england and wales more widely. Some heavy, gales perhaps towards the south west, not so windy for scotland and Northern Ireland. Probably turning more wet later in the day but the rest of scotland should be a dry day still on the cold side. As we move into the beginning of next week, we see the wind easing down, this area of low pressure will bring showers in the north west, perhaps bringing some rain later towards the south east of the uk, still in cold airfor the first couple of days, mild air waiting in the wings accompanied by someone waiting in the wings accompanied by someone wet windy weather from thursday onwards. This is bbc news. Im matthew amroliwala, live at westminster, where borisjohnson is beginning a new term as Prime Minister after the conservatives won their biggest majority since 1987. Im martine croxall, here at downing street, just a few hours ago, mrjohnson urged the nation to find closure and let the healing begin, after years of brexit wrangling. The conservatives now have a majority of 80 seats, and the Prime Minister has thanked those who helped this dramatic victory by voting tory for the first time. Thank you for the trust you have placed in us and in me and we will work around the clock to repay
