Also on the programme a dangerous operation is under way in new zealand to retrieve eight bodies from the volcano that erupted on monday. This is as close as we can get. There has been quite a bit of volcanic activity in the area, toxic gases, tremors and of course the risk of another eruption. People are voting across the uk in the third general election to take place within five years. Polls close in three hours time. And Greta Thunberg takes President Trumps trolling on the chin by changing her twitter bio to reflect his insults. Hello and welcome im katty kay in washington and James Reynolds is in london. Its a big day in the uk where the general election is under way. Because of local reporting rules theres not actually much we can say about it today so we will get to it later in the programme. Here, there have been angry hearings on capitol hill about the articles of impeachment against donald trump. Republicans have argued that democrats were just looking for a reason to get rid of the president because they dont like him. Democrats for their part say they have no choice but to impeach the president because he undermined the nations security for his own political gain. But more than the arguments themselves it was the tone that was striking. Impeachment is a very Serious Business and its raising tempers on both sides of the aisle. This is a travesty, write about it if you want, talk about it if you want, but the American People see it. If we dont have fairness on this committee, how can they stand up and say on the two weakest articles on impeachment in the history of this country, honestly, with a straight face look at the American People and say we did good. No, you didnt. You stained this body. We are here today because the president abused his power. He solicited foreign interference in the 2020 election. He welcomed foreign interference as it relates to russia, he solicited foreign interference on the white house lawn with china and he did it with ukraine. He is a serial solicitor. A serial solicitor, try saying that one faster three times over. Joining me now is elizabeth wydra, president of the constitutional accountability center. To some extent this is a Public Relations operation from both republicans and democrats to talk directly to the American People about the case they are making. Do you think during these hearings a single mind has been changed . dont think so, it is almost as if there are two realities, one on which the democrats are talking about the facts, what trump has done. What trump himself has said he has done and then the republicans on the other side who seem to be speaking to an entirely different audience. It would be better for the American People every actually engaged with the facts of what donald trump has done but it does seem a donald trump has done but it does seem a remarkable argument to say this impeachable conduct that is the subject of these articles of impeachment is not as bad as what president clinton did that got him impeached, perjury of course is very bad, but it was an allegation of lying about an extramarital affair. Republicans were to say in quentins case there was evidence of perjury whereas in Donald Trumps case there is only the inference of what he was trying to get out of ukraine in exchange, possibly, for withholding american aid. I think the congresswoman american aid. I think the congresswoman said it very well when she said President Trump has his own smoking gun. He said to the ukrainian president with are likely to do usa ukrainian president with are likely to do us a favour in order to get the eight released. You dont have to have committed a statutory crime to have committed a statutory crime to get impeached, although i think theyre very good that what President Trump has admitted to doing could qualify if you are being criminally indicted. The important thing here is we are talking about an abuse of the office. The American Peoples interest as leveraged for the president s own personal political gain. That really undermines our faith political gain. That really undermines ourfaith in political gain. That really undermines our faith in aret leaders. It undermines the three Fair Elections that we need for our democracy to work and it gets to the point of no one being above the law. You cannot obstruct justice, point of no one being above the law. You cannot obstructjustice, you cannot obstructjustice you cannot obstructjustice, you cannot obstruct justice and its constitutional duty of oversight. You inherited impeachment largely from us in the uk, we tend to give you everything apart from cricket and bad teeth. I was just wondering, overall, has the impeachment process by and large worked as the founders thought it would charge 30 years ago . 230 years ago. Thought it would charge 30 years ago . 230 years ago. They put in asa ago . 230 years ago. They put in as a remedy knowing it would be a difficult process. Nancy pelosi was not eager to rush into it, it has been difficult. But they are because sometimes the ballot box, the routine check, its not going to be sufficient, either because the misconduct is so egregious that the person is to be removed immediately or as we have a potentially in this case, it concerned that when someone has got into power they could use the vast power, as the founders were concerned, to keep themselves in office and that is why a lot of people say you cannot wait until the next election because President Trump could be using his power and a corrupt way in order to unfairly advantaged himself in the next election. Thank you very much. Lets bring in former adviser to george w bush, ron christie. Thank you forjoining us stop the Clinton Senate trial lasted 37 day start to finish. Mitch mcconnell suggests this particular trial, if it goes ahead, would be a short trial. What you make of good evening. I think it will be longer than church and here is why. The republicans have been saying this has been short circuited process, that they have not been able to call witnesses barely but once you get to the senate controlled chamber which is controlled by republicans, they will have the opportunity to bring those witnesses to testify that they didnt have in the house. I anticipate every day get the vote and the articles of impeachment devoted out of the house of representatives, the trial could be a lengthy affair. I know we havent got to the try get in the senate, but i think republicans are already looking ahead to next year beyond the trial in the senate and to the november election. Here is why. Take a listen tojim november election. Here is why. Take a listen to jim jordan, november election. Here is why. Take a listen tojim jordan, the republican on the committee today. This is about one basic fact. Democrats have never accepted the will of the American People and they are never going to stop, it is notjust because they dont like the president. It is notjust because they dont like the president , they dont like us. They dont like the 63 Million People who voted for this president. All of us over the country, all of us common folk in ohio, wisconsin, tennessee and texas. They dont like us. We can debate whether he himself is pa rt we can debate whether he himself is part of the common folk, however, is this the republicans now talking to voters and using impeachment, whichever way it turns out, as a way to rally their base . Good afternoon, yes, that is exactly it. What we have just heard from representative jordan is emblematic of where the republicans thinking is. They want to go, notjust to republicans thinking is. They want to go, not just to the republicans thinking is. They want to go, notjust to the base, it is already with donald trump, they already with donald trump, they already have his support, but i think they are trying to go to the independents. They are going to those perhaps have not made up their mind just yet of what they think about impeachment and saying washington, dc is not listening to you, it doesnt care about you and by the way, they are trying to take down a duly elected president of the United States who got 60 million votes. I think the republicans and the democrats are dug in, the independents are going to be the ones who shape the 2020 election and i think that is what this is all about. Im looking at this from a distance. In criminal trials we are not allowed to know anything about the jury. Not allowed to know anything about thejury. Here in the uk if we even dare to approach each juror we would be arrested. By contrast of this political trial, we know the duress and how they might vote. How is that going to affect the process . That is an interesting question and it is not the normal 12 members of the jury not the normal 12 members of the jury he would have any criminal trial here in the United States. It is the 300 plus million United States citizens who are the jury. People focus so much on the senators who are going to sitting and listening to the evidence, i think it is the American People and electorate who the democrats and republicans are both trying to curry favour with. That is going to be the interesting thing to watch. Does either side swing the needle to their favourite . Did the democrats convince the American People that the president should be removed from office or do the republicans successfully say this is a sham and should not have taken place in the first place . Thank you so much for joining us. Ive been trying to think what the nearest uk equivalent would be. The newest was the 17th century, the trial of king charles the first which didnt end so well, his head went one way, his body went the other way. Things have changed since then. Is this process gripping america . Perhaps not as much as charles the first losing his head. I think it is. Part of that is because it is historic, this is only the fourth time a president has faced impeachment and everybody is thinking back to previous impeachment and thinking back to nixon, bill clinton back in the late 19905. Nixon, bill clinton back in the late 1990s. There was an interesting parallel coming out of these hearings where you kept hearing that this was about eight misinterpretation of what the president had said. What elizabeth spoke about earlier when he said, will you do us a favour . And the president is saying that us was about the country, it wasnt about me personally, donald trump, which is about this impeachment process rests on, it was about the United States of america and he was acting in the countrys interest. I guess we will go down to the definition of the word us which reminds us about bill clinton because he famously said it depends on the meaning of the word is. President s seem to have a problem with two letter words. We will debate the meaning of these words. A seriously risky operation is under way in new zealand, as a military Recovery Team has gone to the white island to try and bring the eight missing bodies home to their desperate families. Experts say the chances of the volcano erupting again are as high as 60 . Six of the bodies have already been located, but the whereabouts of the other two is unknown. The 8 specialist rescuers will search for them but in a limited capacity given how high the risks are. Their plan is to get on and off the island as quickly as possible. The military will be kitted out with protective clothing and breathing aparatus, in case the volcano does erupt again. Shaimaa khalil reports. Eight bodies have been stuck on this island for four days, and now there is a chance that, finally, they could be recovered. Members of new zealands Defence Force will attempt to reach the volcano to get the job done. They will go on to the island, and they will make every effort to recover all of the bodies from the island. A lot has to go right for this to work. Let there be no mistake, there is not a zero risk with regard to this plan. We are five nautical miles away from whakaari, or white island. There is a restriction zone around it, so this is as close as we can get. Theres been quite a bit of volcanic activity in the area, toxic gases, ash, tremors, and of course the risk of another eruption. Police have said they are quite confident they know where the bodies are. They say they are within a 200 square metre area. The Deputy Police officer said technically they can go in, get the bodies and get out quickly. Tour guide hayden inman is among those missing on the island. His brother says he is frustrated that its taking so long to recover his body. Red tape, bureaucracy, leadership has failed. We are trusting experts that sit behind a desk, making calls based on statistics. Jason hill is one of the pilots who went in and helped rescue people after the eruption. He says the bodies should have been recovered more quickly. Yeah, its been a little bit frustrating, but hopefully we might get something happening soon, hopefully so they can get those loved ones back. Would you go on the island to get the bodies . Definitely, 100 . Yep, without a doubt. There has been growing desperation among families who just want their loved ones back home. Now, for the first time, there is hope this may happen. Just before we went to air, i got the latest from the ground from Shaimaa Khalil authorities have to weigh the family pass understandable desire to get the body is back along with the real risk of going on the island. They know how dangerous this might be . They are very aware how dangerous this is. Weve been told by the Deputy Police commissioner is that all the risky and dangerous factors are still very much real and in place. There is volcanic activity on the island, we know there is a possibility of an eruption. We got close to the island when we took a helicopter right and you could see the heavy plumes of smoke over the volcano, toxic gases as well. And ashes. When the Police Commissioner announced this plan, he said a lot has to go right for it to be successful. He said a lot has to go right is beyond anybodys control because it has to do with environmental factors and the unpredictable activity of the volcano. It is a very risky mission, everyone is volcano. It is a very risky mission, everyone is aware volcano. It is a very risky mission, everyone is aware of how risky it is. The military personnel will go m, is. The military personnel will go in, get the bodies, put them on a military vessel and get out as soon as they can. How much time they have on the island once they land and where they have time to look potentially if there are other bodies they have not yet identified and found . We know the operation will take a few hours, we have not got any details of exactly how long it is going to take. The idea really is to be in and out as soon as they can. We know they know exactly where six of the bodies are, they are unsure about another two but we also know the aim of the mission is to re cover all know the aim of the mission is to recover all the bodies if they can. We know that six specifically are within a similar we know that six specifically are withina similararea. We know that six specifically are within a similar area. We also know there is a risk of that speed of the operation, that when they get out quickly, we are told that could compromise evidence that they could later it used for identification but police have been telling us this is a trade off they are willing to make if it means recovering all the bodies and bringing them back from the island. Thanks. Israel is to hold a third election in a year after politicians were unable to form a majority coalition. Neither prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, nor his main rival, benny gantz, was able to secure majorities following the september election, and they failed to agree on a power sharing agreement. Another vote will now be held on march the second. Police say the gun attack on a jewish supermarket in newjersey this week, was fuelled by anti semitism and hate. Thousands gathered last night to pay tribute to two of the victims. Six people, including two suspects and a detective, were killed during the attack on tuesday. The attorney general says its being treated as an act of terrorism. A brazilian man has been arrested for dressing up as his mother to pass her driving test. He wore a floral blouse, a wig and painted his nails to impersonate his 60 year old mother, who had already failed her test three times. Staff noticed he didnt look quite like the woman on the id and was arrested for fraud. The things one does for a ones mother. Lawyers for Harvey Weinstein say hes reached a 25 Million Dollar civil settlement with some 30 women whove accused him of assaulting, raping or harassing them. But the once powerful movie mogul wont actually pay the money out of his own pocket itll come from his companys insurance and he wont have to admit any wrong doing. Which is why some of the actresses say they arent thrilled with the deal. The agreement closes one part of the case, but mr weinstein still faces criminal sex crime charges that could result in a sentence of life in prison. He has denied all accusations since his arrest last year. From new york, nick bryant reports. The Harvey Weinstein who arrived for a bail hearing yesterday was almost unrecognisable from the red carpet mogul of old. The man alleged to have physically overpowered his female victims, shuffling feebly into this manhattan courthouse, hunched over a walking frame. The disgraced hollywood producer will face a criminal trial injanuary but most of the civil lawsuits against him are on the verge of being settled. More than 30 women will share 25 million, but insurance companies, rather than weinstein, will foot the bill. And nor will he have to admit any guilt. I think the most startling thing in this deal for people is first of all, weinstein wont have to pay his accusers out of his own pocket. And he is not admitting any wrongdoing. Exactly. The New York Times journalist who first told the story of his victims also broke the news of the settlement. So, this was the venue for most of the women to bring their accusations forward in court. And weinstein is able to essentially sweep it away in a single stroke without paying anything to the victims out of his own pocket, or without admitting wrongdoing. The accusers cannot be happy about this. The accusers were not happy at all. Just listen to the anguish of zoe brock, a model who accused him of sexual harassment. The entire process, to me, has been a farce. I think the settlement is a joke and it signifies an absolutely broken system. I am devastated by it, i am appalled by it, i am sickened by it and i feel defeated, and really angry about it. Some of his accusers, such as the hollywood actress ashleyjudd, are not part of this deal and are continuing on with their legal action. Whatever the final settlements of these civil lawsuits, the criminal trial of Harvey Weinstein will start after christmas, and if found guilty, he could face life in prison. Already hes known the world over as an alleged sexual predator. The voices of his victims now define him. Nick bryant, bbc news, new york. Were joined now by wendy murphy professor of Sexual Violence law at new england law boston. Thank you forjoining us, we heard one of the accuser is saying this settle m e nt one of the accuser is saying this settlement is a joke, is this a slap in the face to the woman who came forward to publicly accuse Harvey Weinstein . I think it is. For several reasons. First and foremost, it is not a lot of money. He committed an awful lot of really serious acts of Sexual Misconduct so he is getting a big discount, if you ask me, a kind of volume discount. 25 million sounds like a lot of money, more than half will go to the lawyers so the rest gets divided among approximately 30 victims. Did the maths, that is not a lot of money. It is business for usual as Harvey Weinstein because he has a history of writing a check, doing horrible things to women and paying them to stay silent. This feels like more of the same, that is the Biggest Issue for me. And if that he does not have to admit any wrongdoing. He has always denied this and a criminal trial has yet to ta ke this and a criminal trial has yet to take place. He wont have to admit any wrongdoing as part of the settlement. What does that say to the women . It is another really important point. It is probably the second most important point that i think its really inappropriate about the settlement. It is not unusual for a civil settlement to end where the person being sued does not accept responsibility or omit any kind of guilt, that is not unusual, but in a case like this you think the lawyers representing these women think the lawyers representing these women would say no deal. Unless you met he is guilty. He is not paying a dime, this is insurance money so the least the lawyers could do is say you have to accept responsibility and say you are sorry, you have to do something to acknowledge your role and all of this. I no deal, we dont care what the price is. That did not happen, ithink dont care what the price is. That did not happen, i think it gives people a bad taste in their mouth. What is the lawyers motive . They say they care about justice and it what is the lawyers motive . They say they care aboutjustice and it is important case for women in the workplace and violence against women, i think it isjust about a paycheque for the lawyers. Some of the claimants are unhappy, might they try to break away and start all over again . Yes, in fact a handful of plaintiffs both in the class action case and a separate lawsuit, there are some action case and a separate lawsuit, there are some women action case and a separate lawsuit, there are some women who have said we are not participating in the settlement, were going to continue on with our own lawsuits and they can do that. There are a couple of judges who have to approve the settlement anyway and they might not. They might say this is not good enough, there both a bankruptcy judge in delaware and a federal judge in delaware and a federal judge in delaware and a federal judge in new york have to sign off and they havent done that yet. However, what makes those few victims who are continuing to proceed angry at none the less, although they are free to continue with the lawsuit, is the Insurance Company gets a good deal out of the settlement because they do not have to foot the bill. If they win their separate lawsuits against weinstein and he is a bankruptcy, the Insurance Company would have to foot the bill if the victims when, it might end up a victory where they win what they are entitled to but they dont get paid. They will move forward but i dont think they will feel confident they will recover. Thank you very much forjoining us. The criminal trial is yet to take place. We will see what happens. It ta kes a place. We will see what happens. It takes a lot of courage for people to come forward in these cases, especially against someone as powerful as Harvey Weinstein and a lot of women in this case saying this is not good enough. The fact he did not have to say he is culpable in some way does feel like a slap in the face to them. You will recall yesterday we told you about Greta Thunberg, the 16 year old climate activist announced as time magazines person of the year. But it seems the president wasnt too pleased with the publications choice. So ridiculous, mr trump wrote in a tweet on thursday morning. Greta must work on her anger management problem, then go to a good Old Fashioned movie with a friend chill greta, chill greta was quick to pick up on the insult but she took the high road. She did not respond directly to the president , she simply changed her twitter bio which now reads Greta Thunberg a teenager working on her anger management problem. Currently chilling and watching a good Old Fashioned movie with a friend. I would say 15 love to greta tim berrick greta. This is beyond 100 days from the bbc. Coming up for viewers on the bbc news channel and bbc world news we talk to peter bergen about his book trump and his generals looking at how the president deals with Americas National security establishment. And hailing the electric aviation age well speak with one of people who put a fully electric commercial aircraft into the air for its maiden flight. Thats still to come. Hello there, the weather looks like staying very unsettled over the next few days. Today we have had quite heavy rain sipping its way mainly across england and wales. Some big paddles around. There was some improvement later in wales, especially the south west, showers following but some late sunshine as well. This is the showery area we get overnight from many places, that thick cloud is heading towards iberia and that cloud was the rain bearing cloud we have had today. That is going to be moving away from Eastern England but lingering in Eastern England but lingering in eastern scotland, elsewhere we will see when speaking up, some showers rattling in, gales might be later in the of england. Mary have lighter winds and clearer skies developing in western scotland they may be a touch of frost, one or two icy patches. For eastern scotland we have the area of low pressure going. Elsewhere we will see a brisk winter that will feed in bands of showers and probably the bulk of the showers piling into wales, later into Northern Ireland, showers for the Northern Ireland, showers for the north west of england and further east, should be largely dry. The best of the sunshine probably south west scotland where we keep the cloud and rain in the north east of scotland. Quite cold here again, 56d of scotland. Quite cold here again, 5 6d across the midlands. Temperatures is only seven or 8 degrees in the afternoon. Into the weekend, we still have some sunshine but there will be some showers as well. Accompanied by some fairly brisk winds. It is going to be cold enough this weekend to see a bit more snow in the hills, especially in the night. This is where we have got most of the showers on saturday. Showers for england and wales easing off, plenty of sunshine and then we will see some wetter weather arriving here in the south west. Ahead of that, temperatures perhaps five, six, 7 degrees in the afternoon. That wetter weather coming into the south west is into the colder air and it is likely to bring some snow in the hills of wales and particularly northern england, a couple of centimetres overnight that should be gone by sunday morning. To be quite isee out and about first thing. Then the showers, widely across england and wales, especially in the west and south, still largely dry through lincolnshire up to the north east of england. Fewer showers for scotland and Northern Ireland where the winds are not quite so strong but is still going to feel chilly. As temperatures of the parts of england and wales. This is beyond 100 days, with me katty kay in washington, James Reynolds is in london our top stories. A two day meeting of the Judiciary Committee is expected to end today with a vote most probably along party lines to send two articles of impeachment against President Trump to the full house. A dangerous operation is under way in new zealand to retrieve eight bodies from the volcano that erupted on monday. Coming up in the next half hour an inside take of trumps foreign policy. Well look at some of the president s soured relationships with his highest military officials people across the uk have been voting in the third general election to take place within five years. The polls will close in 3 and a half hours time. As of today, it looks like President Trump is less than one week away from being the third president in us history to be impeached. Republicans and democrats cant agree on how or why we got here, but a new book says take at look at some of the people who used to work for the administration. The book suggests there were three key people in the Trump Administration all of whom have now left who prevented the president from acting impulsively and badly secretary of defensejim mattis, white house chief of staffjohn kelly, and National Security adviser, h. R mcmaster. All three were generals. But what actually happened to these relationships . We are joined now by peter bergen, author of trump and his generals. Thanks for coming in. I love the story, one of the mysteries of the Trump Administration. He comes in and surrounds himself with brass, loves his generals, and then he gets unhappy and somehow they all have to leave. A multiple one could from your book, talking about the generals and you say. What happened . Trump what happened . Trump is the First American president in history to have neither served in the military or Public Office so he need people who knew how to make things work. And also, you recall that about 100 of leading Top Republican experts said they would never work for charm. Military officers generally do not take political positions, so by default he needed these military guys. Very Impressive Group of people, to basically tell him how to run the war against isis and afghanistan and iraq and other places. Over time, the policy differences begin to add up. These generally. They wanted to give a long term commitment to the afghan warand long term commitment to the afghan war and over time they were either pushed out, resigned or left early. And today, john kelly, the former chief of staff, has said publicly that he would trump if you get a yes man in my place, you will be impeached and here we are today with an article of impeachment almost two articles, to go to the full house. So, he is running a little bit like iran his real estate company, which isa iran his real estate company, which is a one man show with a bunch of yes men and women and eight the family members and that is it. Did the generals understand trump . I know that matos was nervous that trump might do something crazy with the american military, that he might intervene where he did not need to. But what we have Learned Society is phobic about military intervention. That is a very good point. He misunderstood trump, in a sense. Co nsta ntly misunderstood trump, in a sense. Constantly not giving him military options on iran and north korea. China site that jump options on iran and north korea. China site thatjump is pretty relu cta nt to china site thatjump is pretty reluctant to use american power, much more similar to obama than either side would have perhaps like to admit in the sense that trump has felt he got elected to get out of these endless words. Cyber worker, jones, you know, no Big Convention of war in the middle east. So, i think youre right. Matos was certainly very concerned, i could emend a bit directly saying we have to make sure that reason does not chop impulse. That was certainly his deep. Highlight another passage from your book, i am going to wait it out. Please feel free to mouth along with me as i read. How did this play out . In the end, trump how did this play out . In the end, trume how did this play out . In the end, trump x the argument. The only thing worse than staying in afghanistan was leaving afghanistan. And letting it collapse into a total civil war, should the taliban enjoy my factories and alqaeda and isis would gain in strength does not so, over time, trump came around to the point of view. One of the paradigms of the president has publicly admitted he had one point at the end basically the fight changed his point of view. Over time, in the that there were accounts from knock down drag out fights over afg ha n knock down drag out fights over afghan more. The general he had served in afghanistan, he was a National Security adviser, i think the debates damage the generals because the one thing champ pates as being manager being lectured to. In this case, he felt both. Peter, they bet is trump and his generals, the cost of care is. I am putting it in my husbands stocking for christmas. Peter, thank you very much. After weeks of campaigning, voting is under way in the general election here in the uk. Its the third election in less than five years, and the first to be held in december for nearly a century. Polls close in just under three hours time, at ten oclock. It may take some time for the full picture to emerge, but an exit poll will come outjust as voting closes and that will be the first indication of a result. In the last general election the exit poll correctly predicted the outcome. Heres our Political Correspondent ben wright and a warning his report includes some flashing images. Voting began at seven oclock this morning. And the prime minister, borisjohnson, had some canine company as he cast his ballot at this polling station in westminster. Have you all got your pictures . Are you all right . The labour leader, jeremy corbyn, posed for the cameras, too, after voting in his north london constituency. It was dawn in scotland when the liberal democrat leader, jo swinson, arrived at a polling station in her constituency. While in glasgow, the snp leader, nicola sturgeon, cast her ballot at a community hall, one of tens of thousands of polling stations across the uk. Many people have already voted by post, including the brexit party leader, nigel farage. In wales, plaid cymrus leader adam price had a soggy walk to a polling station in carmarthenshire, as did the green partys co leader, jonathan bartley, in london. Morning were not used to wrapping up for polling day, nor passing nativity scenes on the way to vote. It certainly looked like christmas in the cairngorms, where casting a ballot required particular care. The last december election was almost a century ago, in 1923, and the most recent winter election was in 197a. This is the third general election in less than five years. There are 650 constituencies in total and the candidate who secures the most votes in each seat is elected to the house of commons. The polling stations are open until 10pm this evening, and well start to see results soon after that. Ben wright, bbc news, westminster. What happened with her predecessor, when he first came into a shape five years ago he was already some twitter issues that we re already some twitter issues that were threatening the very existence a cts were threatening the very existence acts essentially across the eu already facing issues. This is something ursula knows their other big issues, but she is trying to bring the three. Hence, the very best debate is going to be element tonight. Most countries are aboard, but as i say, money for some countries. Briefly, nuclear, defence and Czech Republic saying as for example they need to have this in the table. Many other countries saying no, that is not that nuclear is part of a green future. Those are some of the arguments going on tonight. Gavin, thank you some much. The morning after the London Bridge attack, the papers were full of tales of the bravery of the ordinary people who had stepped in try and restrain attacker usman khan. One man used a nawal tusk, another a fire extinguisher in a bid to stop him from harming any more people. Now its been revealed that the man with the fire extinguishire was in fact a reformed convict, who had been attending a prisoner rehabilitation conference at fishmongers hall. John crilly, who was jailed for murder after a burglary went wrong, said he believed usman khan was wearing a live suicide belt, and was prepared to die as he tackled him. Hes given his first broadcast interview to the bbcs clive coleman. Im just basically screaming at him to blow it. Youre asking him to blow it up . I was screaming, calling his bluff, sort of thing, saying you havent got the balls to blow it. He said, im waiting for the police. He said he was waiting for the police . Before he blew it, yeah. I was prepared to probably lose my life, yeah. Yeah, i was. He is struggling, he cannot see what is doing with it, so he was spraying him, who else was going to be able taken from the side behind whatever . That is exactly what ended up happening. The spray distracted him and the guy with the task given abroad. It seemed like ages before they shot him. The proper took the time. To the point where i did scream time. To the point where i did scream to shoot him. You scream to shoot him . Yeah. Why . Just in case he blew the belt. People think if he isa he blew the belt. People think if he is a hero, do you think of yourself asa is a hero, do you think of yourself as a hero . Hero . No. Jack give up as life, he. He would be my hero. Still clearly really tough memories there. The police force is to be investigated over how usman khan was living before the attack the independent office for Police Conduct had already been investigating police. This is beyond 100 days. Still to come. Whats been claimed as the worlds first fully electric commercial flight took off earlier this week well be asking is this the future of aviation . While Online Shopping has never been more popular, theres growing frustration at the amount of unnecessary packaging being wasted. As the number of deliveries ramps up, our correspondent emma simpson has been taking a closer look at the issue. Its the time of year when the online deliveries are coming thick and fast. How many of us have had this, an online purchase in an oversized box . So, what can be done . Weve come to france to see a new machine that can produce a box to fit the product. Well, this machine can take a standard sheet of cardboard and can make 10 million different varieties of box, to make sure that we have no wasted space at all around the product that somebodys trying to send in the post to a customer. So lets put it to the test. Ive got my christmas decoration, and a few other items. Stefan, press the button. The item is scanned to take the exact dimensions. Meanwhile, the box is being assembled, the cardboard creased and then folded around the product. It can make and pack up to 1,000 boxes every hour. Hey here it is. Look at that. Not much empty space. Its a game changer, because already the uk is the biggest e Commerce Market in europe. 18 of what we buy goes online, so imagine if that doubles. There is a mountain of cardboard already. Most is recycled, but campaigners say bigger changes are needed for all this internet shopping to be sustainable. As well as looking at reducing the amount of packaging, we also need to look towards different systems, different systems of getting products to people, looking at Reusable Packaging options, and also looking at decarbonising the vehicles which are used to transport the products. This machine isnt in operationjust yet, but it is one way our everyday Online Purchases could eventually be made to fit the box. Emma simpson, bbc news. Now we get to the really important uk election story of the day. Whenever uk voters go to the polls its their dogs that take centre stage across the country. And in social Media Election tradition, the hashtag dogsatpollingstations takes off today. So weve picked out a few of our paw litical favourites. If the dogs in dulwich are anything to go by turnout is high. This is in northumberland and seemingly less keen about the the vote. Dogs are getting into it. Literally licking their lips for todays vote. And if youre going hold a december vote this is what you end not to be outdone in wiltshire a voter showed up on horseback. But this one has be a first reindeer at polling stations. Idid find i did find out, Research Shows that on your side of the atlantic dogs have been standing for election for quite a time. Seven have been elected honorary mayors, including one the ornery mayor of a small town california. His duties included leading halloween parades, but he did not get a gun or a badge. Isis baxter are quite a lot of voters out there so disillusioned that they think they dogs with a betterjob than the politicians. Random animals driver today. And, although air travel accounts forjust over 2 of Global Carbon dioxide emissions if our appetite for travel continues to grow, some think aviation will take up a quarter of the worlds carbon budget by 2050. Its a major problem. Some look to electric planes as a possible solution. Earlier this week, an all electric powered seaplane took flight in vancouver, canada. The short test flight involved a six passenger aircraft fitted with an electric motor, flying for around 15 minutes. Its been touted as the worlds first fully electric commercialflight. So, is this the future . Joining us now from redmond washington is roy ganzarski, chief executive of the Engineering Firm behind the plane, magnix. The first powered flight in 1903 lasted 12 seconds, your slatted 15, not a bad start. 15 minutes, yes. And just like in 1903, that 12 second flight luncheon Aviation Industry right behind it. Our hope and plan is that our 50 minute flight and plan is that our 50 minute flight will do the same, lodge an industry of electric aviation, that will be able to offer aeroplanes lower cost and zero emissions. 50 minutes is a very well, how to get him 50 minutes to let say seven hours, so that i could cross the atlantic . That would take some years. The aircraft can do more than 50 minutes, but no can do about 30 minutes, plus another 30 minutes of reserve. That is not the seven hours from london to new york or seattle to london. That will come 30 or 40 years from now. But with 50 of world wide Airline Flights be less than 500 miles, 50 miles is a start is not bad. So, how long will it be, what is a timeframe on this before we can actually do short haul flights from london to europe . With this worldwide flight or this worlds respite on tuesday we started a two year process that has to do with getting regular to a approval. The faa transport canada, they have to approve our system as as reliable and as good as safe as whatever is find out today. That is about a two year process, we expect to get that done by the end of 2021. In 2022, you should be able to buying tickets on all electric car. How many sieges with abbey . 20 to 40 people . Thatll be anywhere between six passengers to 12 passengers. So, small single or dual propeller planes. So, were still quite a way of, we not . This becoming more than your 50 minutes, it is great, but we area your 50 minutes, it is great, but we are a way of having a big impact on aviation carbon emissions, arent we . Then five years she was the a lot of the flights under 500 mile start to be truly electric. That includes flight inside uk and from the uk to mainland europe. He will definitely see that also in the United States and any next ten years she was a plight under 1000 miles be normally and commonly done with we once thought back in the 1970s that concord might be the future of flight, concord might be the future of flight, the supersonic jet. Concord might be the future of flight, the supersonicjet. That did not be the case. So, because not a lwa ys not be the case. So, because not always project the future of flight and of course she made some fantastic promises, but it may not pan out like that. It might not, but not if we had anything to do with it. The difference between what you have talked about before, concorde, biofuels etc, is that the Business Case and not pan out. Buying a concorde and operating it was very expensive and does the tech is expensive. The same thing with biofuels, very expensive compared to traditional fuels and the only code on could benefit you get is lower emissions. In the case of electric aircraft, the Business Case pays for itself. The electric aircraft is 50 to 80 lower cost to operate compared to traditional aircraft. And it is zero emission and so airlines are already talking to us about how did they get that going sooner about how did they get that going sooner rather than later, because the Business Case pays for itself. That is the only way to truly revolutionise aviation. Thank you very much forjoining us. Congratulations on the flight. Todayis today is a very important day on beyond 100 days.
