Leaders are just about to hear from greta the cop 25. Leaders are just about to hearfrom Greta Thunberg. The cop 25. Leaders are just about to hear from Greta Thunberg. The cop 25. Leaders are just about to hear from Greta Thunberg. A year and a half ago, i didnt speak to anyone unless i really had to. But then i found a reason to speak. Since then, ive given many speeches, and learned that when you talk in public you should start with something personal or emotional to get everyones attention. Say things like, our house is on fire, i want to panic or how dare you. Today i will not do that because then those phrases are all that people focus on. They dont remember the facts, the very reason why i say those things in the first place. We no longer have time to leave out the science. For about a year, ive been co nsta ntly science. For about a year, ive been constantly talking about our rapidly declining carbon budgets over and over again. But since that is still being ignored, iwilljust over again. But since that is still being ignored, i willjust keep repeating it. In chapter two on page 108 in the sr 1. 5 ipcc report that came out last year, it says if we are to have a 67 chance of limiting the global temperature rise to below 1. 5 celsius, we had onjanuary one, 2018 420 gigatons of c02 left to emmett in that budget. Of course that number is much lower today as we emit about 42 gigatons of c02 every year, including land use. With todays emission levels, that remaining budget will be gone within about eight years. These numbers are not anyones opinions or political views. This is the current best available science. Though many scientists suggest these figures are too moderate, these are the ones that have been accepted through the ipcc. Please note these figures are global and therefore do not say anything about the aspect of equity which is absolutely essential to make the Paris Agreement worked on a global scale. Applause that means richer countries need to do theirfair share that means richer countries need to do theirfairshare and that means richer countries need to do their fair share and get down to real zero emissions much faster and then help poor countries do the same. So that people in less fortu nate same. So that people in less fortunate parts of the world can raise their living standards. These numbers also dont include most feedback loops, nonlinear Tipping Point or additional warming hidden by toxic air pollution. Most models assume, however, that future generations will somehow be able to suck hundreds of billions of tonnes of co2 suck hundreds of billions of tonnes of c02 out of the air with technologies that do not exist in the scale required and maybe never will. The approximate 67 chance budget is the one with the highest odds given by the ipcc. And now we have less than 340 gigatons of c02 left to omit in that budget to share fairly. Why is it so important to stay below 1. 5 degrees . Because even 1 degrees, people are dying from the climate crisis. That is what the United Science calls for two avoid destabilising the climate so we have the best possible chance to avoid setting off irreversible chain reactions, such as melting glaziers, thawing arctic permafrost. Every fraction of a degree matters. So, there it is again. This is my message. This is what i want you to focus on. So, please, tell me, how do you react to these numbers without feeling at least some level of panic . How do you respond to the fa ct of panic . How do you respond to the fact that basically nothing is being done about this without feeling the slightest bit of anger . And how do you communicate this without sounding alarmist . I would really like to know. Since the Paris Agreement, global banks have invested 1. 9 trillion us dollars in fossil fuels. Invested 1. 9 trillion us dollars in fossilfuels. 100 invested 1. 9 trillion us dollars in fossil fuels. 100 Companies Invested 1. 9 trillion us dollars in fossilfuels. 100 companies are responsible for 71 of global emissions. The g20 countries account for almost 80 of total emissions. The richest 10 of the worlds population produce half of our c02 emissions, whilst the poorest 50 account for just one tenth. Emissions, whilst the poorest 50 account forjust one tenth. We indeed have some work to do but some more than others. Recently, a handful of rich countries pledged to reduce their emissions of Greenhouse Gases by so and so many by this or that date. Or to become climate neutral or net zero in so and so many years. This may sound impressive at first glance but even though the intentions may be good, this is not leadership. This is not leading. This is misleading. Because most of these pledges do not include aviation, shipping, and imported and exported goods, and consumption. They do, however, include the possibility of countries to offset their emissions elsewhere. These pledges dont include the immediate yearly reduction rates needed from wealthy countries which is necessary to stay within the remaining tiny budget. Zero in 2015 Means Nothing if high emission continues even for a few years, then the remaining budget will be gone. Without seeing the full picture, we will not solve this crisis. Finding Holistic Solutions is what the cop should be all about. But, instead, solutions is what the cop should be allabout. But, instead, it seems to have turned into some kind of opportunity for countries to negotiate loopholes and to avoid raising their emissions. Applause countries are finding clever ways around having to take real action, like double counting Emissions Reductions and moving their emissions overseas, and walking back on their promises to increase ambition or refusing to pay for solutions or loss of damage. This has to stop. What we need is real, drastic emission cuts at the source. But, of course, just reducing emissions is not enough. Our Greenhouse Gas emissions has to stop. There we are, the 16 year old activist Greta Thunberg addressing the cop 25 conference, the United Nations climate talks in madrid, where developing countries are expressing growing concern as what they see by major emitters of carbon to block progress at those talks. We will bring you all those developments from madrid and those climate talks. In the uk we have a minor matter of an election, a general election, with voters going to the polls tomorrow. We have been looking specifically at targeted Online Advertising and to what extent that has been able to sway opinion. Our Technology Correspondent rory cellanjones has been analysing all this and joins us now. Whatever view has been telling you . Whatever view has been telling you . What have you found out . We asked people if they saw ads principally on facebook and a few other places, to screenshot them and get the information that only they get, which is why am i being targeted with this ad, and how is it being sent to me. We got more than 1800 messages, lots and lots of different adverts. All sorts of different strategies are emerging. First of all, it seemed to be very strange, all, it seemed to be very strange, all sorts of bizarre approaches. People advertising do to make people advertising to people who are interested in the Rugby World Cup or a certain newspaper or a tv programme but over the weeks its become clear that location is vital. What these various parties and also interestingly non do is make campaigning groups are doing is targeting key areas. Key areas, where the seat could swing. Exactly. In britains general election, usually it is quite a small minority of seats that will matter where there will be a close contest which will determine the outcome. What kind of things were these ads saying . Well, they were pushing the main party message. In labours case, there was a lot of stress on the National Health service. In the conservatives case, it was repeating, repeating that slogan about getting brexit done. What was interesting and what struck our readers, the people who sent m essa g es readers, the people who sent messages on, were these obscure, nonparty groups. Here, big issues of transparency came up. Lots of groups specifically set up just for this election period, and not very clear he was funding them. The issue some of these groups are private so you cant get in there to have a look necessarily. Also, could this be misinformation out there in the run up to this election . What does it mean for the future elections like the us election in 2020 given what happened in 2016 . This is a huge issue around the world. Facebook made a big decision that it was not going to check on misinformation. Generally, misinformation. Generally, misinformation is just not checked up misinformation is just not checked up on in political advertising in britain and potentially around the world, so there is a lot of pressure for that to happen, a lot of pressure about whether facebook should be allowed to do this micro targeting and a lot of pressure for transparency. Before this uk election and the us. There has been a lot of pressure for change in Campaign Laws which havent kept up with a digital era which will only increase. Thank you very much. Your blog is on the bbc website so people can continue to get in touch. Absolutely. Saudi aramco has made its stock market debut in riyadh. The state oil company will be raising a record 26. 6 billion dollars, which will means the overall Value Company will be an eye watering 1. 7 trillion. Lets get more on this story now from our middle east Business Reporter sameer hashmi, whos in dubai for us. What is the latest . As we speak, the evaluation of the company has scratched 1. 88 trillion because the stock price has surged by 10 , creating 9. 39 per share. We saw this happen in the first hour of trading so there is a huge appetite for stock driven by locals or investors, both affluent and retail investors, both affluent and retail investors, then you have the allies in the gulf, countries like the united arab emirates. They have pumped in money which has really given a cushion to this ipo. It is a crucial ipo for saudi arabia, not just saudi aramco because the country plans to use this money to fund the economy by investing in new projects to help create jobs and also take away the saudi economy from oil on which it relies. The whole project is being driven by the crown prince. The next few days will be interesting to see if they can hold up that stock price. We will be keeping an eye and we will rely on you. Thank you very much. Still to come on worklife, should you really be yourself at work . We will hear from one boss who says letting staff show their personalities helps to boost sales. That is a high Risk Strategy in my opinion tell us what yours is, this is worklife from bbc news. Thejob and the job and recruitment site glassdoor has announced its employees a choice award celebrating the ukips best places to work in 2020. Where are the best places to work . Lets get joe 2020. Google came top, number one in the uk this year, fantastic opportunities they have at google, a strong culture and a great senior leadership. It is interesting because Tech Companies dominate the top ten, dont they . They do. Interestingly, if you look at the top 50, the wider list, there is broad representation of Companies Across all industries are technology being the most prominent one but also a lot of consulting firms, finance, restaurants, airline deer mac, and the bbc itself snuck in at number48. Deer mac, and the bbc itself snuck in at number 48. Just tell us what makes a good place to work . How do you measure Something Like this . you measure Something Like this . L number of factors we have found on employee reviews left on glassdoor. A Strong Company culture is one of the key things employees love about their companies, as well as a good worklife balance, strong leadership and a company who has strong values, and a company who has strong values, and a company who has strong values, and a mission they can get on board with. Who came at the bottom . Can you name and shame . We dont like to talk about the ones at the bottom but it is actually blumberg who came number50. But it is actually blumberg who came number 50. That is a great achievement because they beat thousands of companies in the uk to make the top 50 list so it is a real accomplishment to reach the top 50 in any position. Tell us what it ta kes to in any position. Tell us what it takes to make a Great Company for those made from an employee as perspective. It is a culture first decade in 2020s, employers want a great place to work, they want to bring theirfull great place to work, they want to bring their full selves to work and feel comfortable in the workplace knowing they have the opportunities to progress and succeed in their careers. Thanks very much indeed, joe creswell, from glassdoor. Just to say, bbc online of course is the place to be if you want to follow the uk general election. We have special coverage online, on tv and on radio. This young man, a trader in the city of london says i wont be sleeping for over 24 hours on Election Night as he tracks every twist and turn in the value of the pound. Youre not alone. We will not be sleeping here, either this is worklife. Lets have a look at some of the stories grabbing the headlines in the media, online, in the press. We arejoined by sarah weir, chief executive of the dead design council. We will start with this story in the guardian, it is everywhere, actually, which is a great debate, we have been discussing this, exercise advice on food labels to help tackle the obesity crisis. I was in two minds about this when i first read it and is everywhere, in all the papers because i think all these labours and everything, it is completely overwhelming, i dont know what to look at. I thought if i know i drink a fizzy drink i need to run 13 minutes to burn that off, it seems like quite a simple message. The thing about it is you need to try it out with tonnes of people because children might love it, they might love to think theyd love to do a bit of running but on the other hand if youre someone who is already obese, that might make you feel even worse. How conclusive has the research been this will work . M worse. How conclusive has the research been this will work . It is early. You need to read down to the end of the article and that is a good point. Istarted end of the article and that is a good point. I started thinking, end of the article and that is a good point. Istarted thinking, oh, this is already here. But they are actually just trying it this is already here. But they are actuallyjust trying it out this is already here. But they are actually just trying it out which this is already here. But they are actuallyjust trying it out which is what they need to do. You talked about it being simple. This is simple. Some may see it this is oversimplistic because this is just accounting for the exercise, not what it takes for your body to do all the other functions without exercising. And something with high calories might be betterfor you so it isa calories might be betterfor you so it is a bit ofa calories might be betterfor you so it is a bit of a mix but this research is interesting and that is a chance to talk to tonnes of people across the country to get a lot of views. Another story you found in the daily mail is talking about sta rgazers the daily mail is talking about stargazers launching a 100,000 project to protect the night time views at North York Moors by installing lights that are dark skies friendly. What is this all about, sarah . This was interesting. North yorkshire moors, you can see 2000 stars up there but lots of proliferation of led lights which are cheap, nicely designed and cheap, but they are causing the fact you cant see the stars. This project is about giving small grants to communities to put on a motion sensor under the lights which actually darkens them. I thought if you go back to the thing weve been talking about, you can walk up to the moors and you can burn off a few calories it is a brilliant idea, it is local, innovative. Sustainable living which is a good thing. And preserving Natural Beauty which we desperately need. Its lovely to hear it as an incentive to look at the sky and people are doing these sorts of trips. I agree. I know nothing about the stars and i try to look through a telescope but i cant tell one from another but this might encourage me to do so. The metro has this story which is astonishing. The Spanish Hotels 11. 9 this story which is astonishing. The Spanish Hotels11. 9 million Christmas Tree. The most expensive in the world. It looks stunning but nearly £12 million . It is excessive. As have been talking about Sustainable Living. The best way to doa Sustainable Living. The best way to do a tree, the cheapest way, is to ta ke do a tree, the cheapest way, is to take a photograph of the tree you love and projected onto the wall, there you go, free you sent us a photo of the Design Councils tree. What is this . We like to subvert things. We took the idea of a president under a tree and weve may be present enormous, we owned that box and it has an exhibition that is inside it. We wrapped up and put a tiny tree on top. Is it a real tree . Yes but it doesnt have its roots. We have a big present in a small tree. Last year we did enormous bubbles hanging from the ceiling and three small trees on the ground. Bubbles hanging from the ceiling and three small trees on the groundm sounds amazing. And it is a statement, isnt it, for many people their Christmas Tree within their home or office or Work Environment, it isa home or office or Work Environment, it is a bit ofa home or office or Work Environment, it is a bit of a statement. It is but you can do things cheaply. Wrap oranges and apples in tinfoil, hang them on the tree, then eat them. Wrap everything into one, Sustainable Living and good solutions. Do you think they might go down that road, this hotel . We will come and help design at next year. Sarah, thank you very much. Lets have a look at what youve been saying, then, about the story about eating. We are not going to do that, we are going to talk about putting your personality into your workplace. James mcmaster the ceo of Health Food Company huel says a chance meeting inspired him to start a new strategy for his staff, called bring yourselves to work. He says that allowing employees to show their full personalities in their professional roles helps drive up sales and leads to a happier workforce. Lets take a look. My ceo secret is to encourage your team to bring themselves to work and then they will bring their true personalities, they will give a better Customer Experience and that equals more sales. I remember interviewing someone at a previous business who had had a bad experience coming back from eternity, where there was no desk, no role, and people didnt even know she was coming back that day. It made me think if you come back into Work Environment and you dont feel very valued, you are not going to do your best work. So, we believe the best way to have your staff feeling like theyre giving everything and feeling like theyre totally committed to the company is to create an environment where they feel they can bring their true selves to work. If you have a team there that dont feel like they can bring their personality to work, theyre just going to rollover with any comment from a customer. So, our team dont roll over, theyre very comfortable to talk until the end of the about why it is good for peoples bodies, and thats why its successful. If you feel comfortable being your true self on the phone or whether youre talking to someone on social media, that customer will remember it, and that customer ultimately will end up buying more from the company. Interesting ideas there. Apologies if you are hoping to hear from the chief executive of head and listen wide. She will come on another day tojoin us on wide. She will come on another day to join us on worklife because we spent quite a bit of time hearing from Greta Thunberg from the cop 25 from Greta Thunberg from the cop 25 from madrid. We asked whether exercise labels would change what you eat and drink. Lets have a look at some of your responses. It steals the joy from eating, she says. Many of you agree with that view. Education is the way forward but it wont have instant results. Rubin says. Thats what im wondering about this, whether it risks promoting exercise as punishment. A bug isa20 exercise as punishment. A bug is a 20 mile bike ride . I cant get 20 miles in every time i eat a burger. It would change the way i eat and drink if i was to see its dogleg like that, especially in a bottle of wine. But also a cake see the calories on the cake, but you off completely. That is todays worklife. See you soon. Good morning. It was a very wet and windy day across many parts of the uk yesterday, all driven by a very deep area of low pressure to the south of iceland which gave Hurricane Force winds and blizzards in iceland but you can see this area of cloud which is a cold front which gave us that wet weather yesterday and you can see it has cleared away. Now we have got this much colder air moving its way in from the north west. With that quite a view shows across Western Areas this morning, some of those wintry of the high ground of scotland. Throughout the afternoon, those showers drift their way eastward, there could be some heavy and thundery showers to come through the afternoon but there will be sunny spells in between and notice itll be a chilly day compared to yesterday. That cold air is in place and temperature is about 59. Is in place and temperature is about 5 9. Tonight, a few showers towards the south east, clearing, some wintry showers across the north of scotland, and elsewhere some clearing skies going into thursday morning. A bit of a frost likely to occur particularly in eastern and Northern Areas with temperatures close to if not below freezing in the countryside. Not as cold further south and west. Eight celsius in plymouth. That is because the next weather system moves in from thursday. Thatll spread north and eastward with fairly strong winds without, the robotically heavy across the south with snow across the high ground of northern england, West Yorkshire up into the hills of scotland. Sting chilly across these Northern Areas on thursday. Further south, that little bit milder. Into friday, that weather system clears away to the east but low pressure will stick around on friday and indeed into the weekend as well. We will keep things fairly unsettled. On friday, there will be a mixture of sunny spells and showers. Temperatures getting up to about 69 and we keep that theme as we go through saturday and into sunday as well. Bye bye. Youre watching bbc news at 9 with me, annita mcveigh. The headlines. There is a real risk again of a Hung Parliament which i think would be absolutely disastrous, economically disastrous, politically disastrous. Two more referendums, one on scotland and one on the european union. They need a uk government that will invest all across the country and give real hope and Real Security to people. That is the offer that labour makes. And the leaders of all the other main parties are also out today in one last push for votes. Recovery efforts on new zealands white island volcano are on hold as seismic activity activity suggests it may erupt again. The bodies of eight people have yet to be recovered. Liverpool and chelsea both win to qualify for the knockout stages
