Police in new zealand say there are no signs of life on the island where a volcano erupted, killing tourists who were on a visit to the crater. At least five people are confirmed to have been killed but more than twenty others are missing and police say they dont expect any more survivors. Day trippers were seen walking inside the rim of the crater of the white island volcano just moments before the eruption. Richard lister reports. Seconds after the eruption began, these tourists got off the island just in time. Minutes later, and a boiling ash cloud fills the sky. Oh, my god. The boat crew know how dangerous this is. Go inside not half an hour before, theyd been at the craters edge, with no idea of what was coming. After returning to their boat and seeing the blast, they go back to look for survivors. They find a sightseeing helicopter destroyed by the eruption. The plume of ash is still building and further down the beach, a large group of daytrippers is assembling on a rock, waiting for rescue. 23 people were picked up by tourist boats but others are still unaccounted for. Among them, this group, seen on a monitoring camera heading for the craterjust before the eruption. I know there will be a huge amount of concern and anxiety for those who have loved ones on or around the island at the time, and i can assure them, police are doing everything they can. The injured were brought to wha katane harbour, most were suffering from burns and five of them did not survive their injuries. Helicopters transferred those who were critically ill to specialist hospitals, but this rescue and recovery operation has had to be suspended for now. The island is unstable, the possibilities of further eruptions, and actually, the physical environment is unsafe for us to return to the island. White island may be new zealands most active volcano, but its also popular with tourists. Some 10,000 visit every year. Last month, a Volcano Monitoring Group raised the alert level, saying eruptions may be more likely. It is quite plausible that this is the first stage of an eruption that could continue. But on the same side of the coin, it could just simply be a one hit wonder. The police have been flying Reconnaissance Aircraft looking for any signs of life on the island. They say theyve found none, and they re assuming there are no more survivors. Richard lister, bbc news. Chiara petrone is with me shes a volcanologist at the Natural History museum in london. Thank you forjoining us. First of all, why do you think this volcano erupted now . It had been quite active . It is a very active volcano. It has had the renewed activity since 2012 and in the last couple of months there has been a rest so people at geo net, the Monitoring Survey of new zealand, they have been seeing signs of renewed activity, more intense activity, and the last couple of months. About three weeks ago, they raised it from level one to level two which means the activity is picking, and increasing. So increasing activity, and that raises the question, why on earth would tourists be able to visit and actually walk around the rim of the crater . That is a very good question. First of all, in this particular case, it is a privately owned island, and the Tourist Company kind of assume responsibility so to speak. But there are many volcanoes in which people are more or less allowed to 90, people are more or less allowed to go, and there is a very fine line between informing people and so people should know which risk they are taking when they go to an active volcano, and the authority say, you cannot go. So its very difficult and in this particular case the island is just a and in this particular case the island isjust a crater. What we and in this particular case the island is just a crater. What we can see is just the top crater and the majority of the island is under so what happened is when people go there they actually are right in the crater, so it is very dangerous. What about other volcanoes around the world where visitors go . Would you think that perhaps people should have second thoughts about visiting volcanoes as tourists . People should be informed all the time and they should really know what they are putting their life at risk. The problem is that many people, is much asa problem is that many people, is much as a volcanologist or Geological Service or any volcano monitoring observatory is informing people, some peoplejust. Clearly, when you see a volcano some peoplejust. Clearly, when you see a volcano it is beautiful. It is fascinating and exciting. And it is clear that people want to visit. 0n the other hand, what we can do is just visit. 0n the other hand, what we can do isjust to inform people as much as possible and give the right information. If you go, it is an active volcano and there is the sort of risk. As you were saying, there we re of risk. As you were saying, there were warnings of heightened activity but even so, are you surprised that it erupted with this ferocity and this deadliness . Well, i am not surprised in the sense that this is kind of eruption in line with the type of activity of this volcano. 0n the other hand, it is unfortunate, a significant amount of people die, and this is very sad. But the eruption itself is not a major eruption. After all, all the activity was confined in just the crater. It is very unfortunately the case that people were there at that moment. Having said that, it is quite difficult to forecast an eruption like this because most of the time there are no warning signs. Thank you very much for being with us. Thanks for your expert analysis. Borisjohnson has been criticised for his response to the case of a four year old boy who slept on a hosptalfloor because of a lack of beds. The Prime Minister was confronted with the image of Jack Williment barr at leeds general infirmary on a reporters phone during an interview for itv, but initially did not look at it, instead putting the phone in his pocket. He later produced the phone and said it was a terrible photo. The hospital apologised to jacks family for the long wait and said in a statement. Lets get the latest on this from our Political Correspondent helen catt. We can head to outside the leeds general infirmary. Nick. That picture ofjack general infirmary. Nick. That picture of jack has become general infirmary. Nick. That picture ofjack has become a big issue in the general election campaign. Today, after that video of borisjohnson repeatedly refusing to look at the picture went viral on social media. Mrjohnson eventually as you said looked at the picture and said it was dreadful and apologise for the situation but he has faced repeated questions today about whether he lacked empathy when he was confronted on it. Have a listen to mrjohnson when he was asked again about jacks situation ata asked again about jacks situation at a press conference. We are not only investing in Childrens Services in leeds but also rebuilding the infirmary from top to bottom, and we can do that because we are now putting the biggest ever investment into the nhs. What i dont want to see is a fantastic programme that is going to unite and level up our country being blocked again, and we have got to build, and parliament, that would insist we have to increase funding on the nhs over and above inflation every year. That is now blocked by this parliament because we havent got a working majority. If we can get a working majority on thursday we can take this country forward, get brexit done and invest massively in our public services, and that is the choice we face. So some of the familiarcampaign the choice we face. So some of the familiar Campaign Themes from mr johnson, not much on the specifics of jacks case, and johnson, not much on the specifics ofjacks case, and opposition parties, as you know, have repeatedly accused the conservatives of not caring enough about the Health Service and that is why potentially this is quite damaging for potentially this is quite damaging foer potentially this is quite damaging for mrjohnson. The labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has accused the conservatives of showing they dont ca re conservatives of showing they dont care in their response. Have a listen to jeremy care in their response. Have a listen toJeremy Corbyn. The daily mirror today shows this picture, i will turn it around so eve ryo ne picture, i will turn it around so everyone can see it, this picture of a four year old boy suffering from pneumonia being treated on the floor ofa pneumonia being treated on the floor of a hospital. And people ask questions about this and i simply say this. The toadies have had nine yea rs say this. The toadies have had nine years to fund our nhs properly. It is time to bring their regime to an end and elect a Labour Government thatis end and elect a Labour Government that is determined to fund our nhs properly. Now the tories insist they will put more money into the nhs and mrjohnson has promised billions more. He said earlier that leads infirmary behind me will be one of those hospitals who get more cash, but if you want a sign of how seriously conservatives are taking this this afternoon after mr johnsons initial response was so widely criticised, within the last couple of hours the Health Secretary matt hancock was scrambled to the hospital here to speak to management. He has also spoken to jacks mother. Have a listen to what he said when he was your half an hour ago. I was horrified. I have three small children myself and have spent too many evenings in a e and i know what it feels like. I want to make it better. One of the good things about what is happening here at the leeds general as they have already identified the problems on this unit and the fact there wasnt enough space and they have got a funded plan, in fact they are trebling the size of the unit next year. We will be putting on the record amount of funding, biggest ever injection into the nhs, and that is needed. It is funded because we have got a record numbers of people in work and are able to fund it but i want to make sure the nhs is always there for anybody who needs it and that means consta ntly anybody who needs it and that means constantly looking to see what improvements need to be made. Aside from the obvious personal circumstances of the family involved in this, it has become a big election issue today and it is not what the conservatives wanted to be talking about. Borisjohnson wanted to spend today, three days before polling, talking about brexit and trying to target those labour areas but instead, labour are able to tackle the conservatives on the nhs. The national Health Service featured elsewhere in campaigning for the election. Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon said Boris Johnson posed a threat to the nhs. I speak to so many people every day now who are genuinely concerned about having somebody like Boris Johnson deciding and shaping and in fa ct johnson deciding and shaping and in fact dictating the future of the country. He has shown himself to be com pletely u ntrustworthy country. He has shown himself to be completely untrustworthy in his short time as Prime Minister and on his campaign trail he is dodging scrutiny and i think people are genuinely worried about the direction of travel he wants to take the country and. Threats to our national Health Service, an erosion of workers rights, a hard to possibly no deal brexit, his get brexit done line is the biggest con of the campaign. If you get this done all that happens is the next phase of chaos kicks in. I dont believe the majority of the people of scotla nd believe the majority of the people of scotland want that kind of future. The liberal democrat leader, jo swinson, has defended her partys pledge to revoke article 50 which paved the way for britain to leave the european union. Speaking earlier on five live and the bbc news channel she denied that rejecting the result of the 2016 referendum was undemocratic. In the vast majority of circumstances, it is unchanged, the liberal democrats want a peoples vote and you will Work Together to secure a peoples votes that puts a specific deal to the public to have their say. Lets be clear, we have tried to make that happen in parliament and the preference was to resolve this issue through a peoples vote on the brexit deal that Boris Johnson went and negotiated, rather thana johnson went and negotiated, rather than a general election, because it would be more specific. It would be one question youre asking people. Obviously in a general election there are a lot of different factors that weigh up. Russia has been banned from all major sporting events for four years including the next olympics and world cup. The World Anti Doping Agency announced the unprecedented ban after finding that russian officials had tampered with data to cover up evidence of cheating. Russian athletes who can prove they were untainted by the doping scandal will still be allowed to compete but only under a neutral banner. Our Sports Correspondent andy swiss reports. The Russian Federation from 0lympic hosts to sporting outcasts. Ever since holding the winter games in 2014, russia has been mired in unprecedented doping scandal, and now it faces an unprecedented punishment. After fresh revelations of another cover up by russian officials, this morning the World Anti Doping Agency banned russia from all major sporting events for four years. Following a string of transgressions, their patience had run out of. Russia was afforded every opportunity to get its house in order, and to rejoin the global anti doping community, for the good of its athletes and for the integrity of sport, but it chose instead to a different route. They have had three swings at the bat, struck out three times. The duplicity and deceit and deception they exhibited isjust beyond the pale. I think it is an embarrassment to the athletes in the world. It has recently emerged russias Anti Doping Agency tampered with laboratory data, altering or deleting athletes test results. Earlier, the new head of the Russian Agency told the bbc the scale of the previous regimes cover up. Thousands of entries were deleted. Yeah. Thousands. The punishment means there will be no russia team at next years olympics. 0nly athletes who can prove they are clean can compete, under a neutralflag, as some did at the winter games last year in pyeongchang. It also means russia are banned from the football world cup. Remember, they hosted the last tournament, but their National Team will not be at the next one in 2022. Russia can appeal against the punishment, but five years on from the now notorious sochi games, one of sports traditional super powers is out in the cold. Andy swiss, bbc news. And in sport, following russias four year ban from major sporting competitions the World Anti Doping Agency says this is the right decision at the right time. After regaining his three world heavyweight title is Anthony Joshua said he would like his next fight to be in london. An englands women have beaten pakistan to take a 10 women have beaten pakistan to take a 1 0 lead in the one Day International series. I will be back with more on those stories a bit later on. An old baileyjudge has given a man 33 life sentences for a series of rapes and violent sex attacks on 11 women and children across england. Joseph mccanns victims were aged between 11 and 71. Our Home Affairs Correspondent sarah corker is at the old bailey. Yes, Joseph Mccann was described today as a brutal and dangerous man who showed no remorse for his dangerous crimes. For two weeks you roa m dangerous crimes. For two weeks you roam the country kidnapping and raping women and children. His attack started in watford, continued in london, lancashire and greater manchester. He was finally arrested in cheshire. There was a police chase, he was in a stolen car and was eventually found hiding up a tree by the police helicopter. Mccann refused to come to the old bailey for his four week trial and again today he refused to come to court for his sentencing. He said he had a bad back. Thejudge in court described him as a coward, a violent bully and a paedophile. A coward because you been unable to fissure accusers and have chosen instead to hide on your cell. He went on to say, you are a classic psychopath, i do not think you will ever cease to be dangerous until old age deprives you of the strings to commit serious sexual offences. This was a campaign of rape, violence and abduction of a kind i have never seen or heard before. Mccann was given 33 life sentences and he will be in prison for at least 30 years before he is even considered for parole. In a rare personal statement thejudge said today he called for an independent investigation into failure is of the criminaljustice system. Why was mccann freed from prison by mistake in february . He should never have been roaming the streets, and tonight the ministry of justice has said they are carefully considering their next steps. And there was praise from the judge for his 11 victims . Yes, thejudge praised their courage and bravery. We heard how one victim escaped mccann by hitting him over the head with a bottle of vodka. Another one jumped from a first floor window to again escape him. There was one victim impact statement that was read out in court today. The victim described the chronic pain she suffers every day, the nightmares, the flashbacks, the inability to go out alone and the life ofjust surviving and managing the trauma. 0ne surviving and managing the trauma. One issue that was also raised in court today was the difficulty to get help and support, to get therapy. A lack of support from rape survivors. And one victim said she had been told there was an eight to 12 month waiting list for therapy on the nhs. She had to pay for it herself. As for mccann, he has never uttered one single word of remorse or shown any concern for his victims. Tonight he is starting a life sentence. Bbc news has been focusing on constituencies around the uk where parties could make important gains. Today, Joanna Gosling is in crewe joanna. Throughout the campaign, bbc news will be looking closely at the places where the election could be won and lost. Weve been to 10 parts of the uk where seats will be closely contested. Today, in our last town, we are in crewe, which is in the north west of england. The town, which is part of the Crewe Nantwich constituency, is surrounded by five other seats . Four were conservative and one labour in the last election. Here, labour also won . Just . With a 48 vote majority over the conservatives. It was the eighth closest contest in the country. In terms of the Eu Referendum it was also close. Crewe fell under Cheshire East for the brexit vote, and that region narrowly voted leave . 51 leave to 49 remain. Brexit has been a key issue for voters with many questioning the claims from political parties. 0ur correspondence has been reflecting back on the day of speaking to undecided voters and i will be speaking to him injust a few moments. First lets get this report from tom burridge. Atrain trip a train trip through the pennines. Picturesque but like many journeys across the north of england, relatively slow. In this election there are promises galore that public transport links will improve. Everything is promised every time andi everything is promised every time and i think the north east is left out. I do believe that. Hebden bridge station, a reminder of how long it is since our railways were conceived. Today just long it is since our railways were conceived. Todayjust over 1 of people in the north of england catch a train on a daily basis. 1 . If you wa nt to a train on a daily basis. 1 . If you want to de clog the roads that has to change. We need new lines, the new fast line from leeds to manchester, but we also need to reopen the lines that have been closed and there is now a big demand for reasons of social mobility and environmental reasons. Bradford has a young population but to realise that potential you need a transport system to match. The station and the fa ct system to match. The station and the fact there is another station across the city serving different places says it all. Bradford doesnt properly connected. Politicians now agree that an entire overhaul of the networking as part of the country is needed with the new station in the city. That makeover is called Northern Powerhouse rail or crossrail for the Northern Powerhouse rail or crossrailfor the north. All parties are committed to this £40 billion project. There will be a new fast link between manchester and leeds and upgrades to existing lines. Upgrades should begin in five years time. If you want to start, it is really Cost Effective to be here and it isa really Cost Effective to be here and it is a cool place to be. Craig burton who runs a recruitment business says if you transform public transport then you transform this region. These kits will be in poverty for the future, if they cant choose to work, they want to work in different cities. At the moment that is particularly difficult. I have people who work for me who travel an hour and a half to leeds in their car, normally a 20 minute journey if it is not in rush hour. I dont know why they do it. In crewe, a place that needs investment, there is uncertainty over whether this town will become a stop on a High Speed Railway called hs2. Conservatives say they are undecided about that project. Buses are my means of getting out. More immediate travel concerns for many. All the parties are promising more money for buses. Carol has been campaigning against cuts to services in crewe. And this is her message for politicians. It is all right having a car, having a chauffeur, even, but a lot of people havent got that. Theyve only got the bus. Marks only option home is an unreliable train service. It isnt just the inconvenience, it is your Mental Health and yourjob. The state of public transport high up his agenda. I can drive but i have already paid for my season ticket so lam already paid for my season ticket so i am stuck with it. A factor when he votes in just three days. We are broadcasting today from the Crewe Heritage centre and there are lots of Railway Carriages around. We have also been joined today by a lot of undecided voters. It is estimated that may be 13 of undecided voters . 0ne that may be 13 of undecided voters . One recent yougov of paul put of the number who intend to vote, 13 still havent made up their mind. If you ta ke havent made up their mind. If you take the total size of the electorate and look at how many actually voted that the last election in 2017, that equates to probably just over election in 2017, that equates to probablyjust over 4 million people. Within a probablyjust over 4 million people. Withina margin probablyjust over 4 million people. Within a margin of error, that may be more than one undecided at this stage in 2017, but whatever the numbers, it shows there are a lot of people who are still thinking about their vote and we saw that from the audience panels today, and it does mean that things that happened in the last two or three days can make a difference. Dramatic events can change peoples minds, and we had a lot of uncertainty from people slightly flummoxed by the barrage of numbers they have had thrown at them and trying to sort of pin down the issue that they feel is most important for them on which they will cast their vote. There have been a few over the course of the day, but not many, who say they have made up their minds today. What are theissues made up their minds today. What are the issues you have particularly picked up that have been getting through . The nhs, social care, i think. A couple of people really talking about crime in their neighbourhood and what is happening, so we had one debate about police numbers. Trust in politicians, that was quite a big theme. A group of undecided voters are perhaps less surprising that a lot of them were dissatisfied with what they were hearing from their politicians, but a couple of interesting debates, along the lines of there is always spin and slogans and it is right that politicians should be actively campaigning to persuade you that they should get your vote, but there isa they should get your vote, but there is a feeling that in this election perhaps more than any other in recent times, there have been a few too many misstatements and misinterpretations and misrepresentations, and it was very clear from these groups of voters that they are fed up with it and that they are fed up with it and that politicians need to do better and need to be more honest. As i say, always a bit of dishonesty and politics and people want to win but the message from these voters is, if you are on the sweaters and tell us what we need to know, youre more likely to nobody really wanted to do that. And yet we discussed the fact that because it has such a big issue for the future of the economy, it really isa the future of the economy, it really is a fork in the road election, even if you dont want to talk about brexit, what decision is made on brexit, what decision is made on brexit will affect all the bread and butter issues. Whether the nhs or the state of schools or social care or crime on the streets. So it is there and the background. This is still the brexit election. Whatever happens, whatever result comes out, im afraid the get brexit done slogan does not work for me. There will be a lot of talk about brexit next year. At 830 this evening, you can join brexit next year. At 830 this evening, you canjoin us on bbc one and bbc iplayer for a special edition of question time. Weve been to ten parts of the uk where seats will be closely contested. Today were in our last town, crewe, in the north west of england. Joanna gosling has been spending the day in there, speaking to undecided voters, from the britain thinks panel. This is a place where everything all vote counts, because it was one last time by labour by a majority ofjust 48 votes. The most marginal constituency in the country was won by just two votes, so constituency in the country was won byjust two votes, so extraordinary areas that are been particularly focused on in their selection and terms of which way they might go and how tight it was last time. There is a large number of undecided voters out there according to the latest poll, potentially 13 of voters who say they definitely will vote say they still have not decided which way to go. I was joined they still have not decided which way to go. I wasjoined earlier by they still have not decided which way to go. I was joined earlier by a panel of 48 of those voters. Throughout the day, some of them did decide which way they would vote but only a small number. I spoke to rob a while ago and when i caught up with him he had actually finally decided which way he would vote. |j will vote labour. A number of issues, but the most pertinent things today are the inspiring message that Angela Rayner delivered. It was the empathy she displayed that made me realise labour do have a moral fibre that they want to ensure it is running through their government. Why has it taken so long for you to feel that . I suppose the big difference is when you see people face to face you have the opportunity at home to watch tv, to what social media, and you get bombarded with different messages. When you ashley meet selby face to face and you have a conservative representative, a lib dem, snp, labour, listening to them and listening to what they are saying makes a big difference. I was able to take the trust on board of what she delivered and that is where ito go. You are what she delivered and that is where i to go. You are still undecided . Yes, i i to go. You are still undecided . Yes, lam between i to go. You are still undecided . Yes, i am between conservative, labour and also the green party. My reasons are the conservative willing to offer the people what they voted for, which is to leave the european union. However, labour is also willing to go back to the people and asked them, what do you really want . With high insight as to all the untruths that were told with the first Eu Referendum, i think that is something that is wise because people can now decide, is this what i really want to quit everything that has happened . Is brexit the most important issue . It is not necessarily the most important issue for me, but it is one of the issues which i think the whole country is looking at and wanting to decide which way to go. The outcome of the election could take as down com pletely election could take as down completely different parts. We are ata completely different parts. Lets have a listen. Ten years of underfunding the system . We do not wa nt underfunding the system . We do not want you in this country you are not welcome in this hospital you are not welcome in this hospital you are not welcome in this country they have devastated our country. Absolutely devastated our country. There is nothing left. Why is that boy sleeping on the floor . |j there is nothing left. Why is that boy sleeping on the floor . I put my hand out and he walked into it. While out on the campaign trail today, borisjohnson questioned whether funding the bbc through the licence fee is sustainable. In response to a question, the Prime Minister said it was an issue worth looking at in the future. 0ur media correspondent David Sillito is here. This potentially would have huge implications for the bbc and people who use it. 0ne one question, should we still be paying the licence fee, and he said any paying the licence fee, and he said a ny ma nifesto paying the licence fee, and he said any manifesto the earlier reference they make is the conservatives want they make is the conservatives want the bbc to take on the full cost of the bbc to take on the full cost of the free license fees for over 75. The bbc says it cannot afford it and thatis the bbc says it cannot afford it and that is why it says it is only people with pension credit who will receive it. He went on to say, extent pricing, i do not want to be making policy on the hoof, but he said the future of the licence fee does need to be looked at. He says it bears reflection whether or not this will be the long term solution. He was thinking aloud, rather than coming up with a specific policy. It did raise the question in the long term whether or not the licence fee, based on televisions, well carry on. Has the bbc had any response . They have issued a statement saying the licence fee ensures a universal fee ensuring this is the best Popular Service and has agreed the method of funding for another eight years. That eludes to the fact that actually the licence fee is an agreement with the government, back in 2017 the last one, last for 11 years. This is looking quite a way in the future when the next set of negotiated come along for the next charter. There will be a review of the licence fee around 2022, halfway through, but not expected. To be looking at whether on not we have a licence fee are not. Interesting background, this is a topic that is notjust in the uk, other European Countries have been looking about, do you actually have a fee based on a tv . Is that a bit outdated . A number of countries have gotten rid of their licence fees, most of them with funding through income tax, direct government funding or introducing advertising. All of these are issues raised at the last charter, and indeed if you go back have the last 30 years it has always been raised as an issue, subscription, advertising, and ongoing topic. At the moment the processes not begin negotiation until about 2026. More now on our main story. At least five people are dead after a volcano erupted without warning in new zealand. Its feared the death toll will rise. Day trippers were seen walking inside the crater of the white island volcano just moments before the eruption. Samantha 0lley is a reporter for nzme and took a flight close to the volcano after the eruption she told us what she saw. It was a great streaming monstrosity. There is a large crater lake inside white island. Otherwise known as whakaari. The crater lake was steaming a lot more than usual. There were many more events, but the main difference was that the entire crater was covered in green and grey ash, which is not normally here. And the cloud, there was a large white cloud initially above the crater lake. And then that slowly grew to a more grey colour as the ash spread to the east. And in the eastern side of the island and the sea, you could see that the ash had to change the colour of the sea. It had turned to a brown colour, is the ash had come out of the sky. And also flowing out from a river which flows into a nearby beach. Emergency crews cannot get to the island. It is simply too dangerous. We were very lucky to be able to fly over today and in fact whenever the wind changed, you could smell the sulphur before you knew that the cloud was slightly moving and we would have to fly away from that. Tributes have been paid to one of the last surviving battle of britain pilots, whos died at the age of 101. Flight lieutenant Maurice Mounsdon helped to defended the skies above southern england from the nazis in 1940. His death leaves only three remaining members of the pilots who became known as the few. 0ur correspondent robert hall, who spoke to Maurice Mounsdon in 2015, has this report. Theyve gripped us with their stories for over 75 years. But now, one by one, the men who defended their country against overwhelming odds are passing into raf history. Maurice mounsdon was 21 when hejoined up. Less than a year after completing his training, he was in combat over kent. Newsreel hurricanes and spitfires roar into action. Flying hurricanes fighters, he flew relentless missions against the waves of german bombers, sent to soften britain up ahead of hitlers planned invasion. During july and early august, maurice shot down seven enemy aircraft, but at the end of august, at the peak of the battle, he was forced to bail out of his burning aircraft. Id had a shot at one of the bombers, and i was overtaking the squadron, so i turned to come back and have another go, when i was hit. Maurice was terribly burned on his hands and legs. He suffered a great deal during his months in hospital. I was hit with a shell in the gravity petrol tank behind the dashboard, which exploded, of course, and it blew petrol into the cockpit, which instantly caught fire. So there was only one thing to do, and that was get out as fast as possible. 544 raf pilots were killed during the battle of britain. Maurice mounsdon never flew in combat again, but he served until the end of the war. Today, air chief marshal mike wigston, chief of the air staff said he was one of the best, you know, he was always chatty, appreciated people recognising that he was a battle of britain veteran, but on the other hand it hadnt fazed him. He went on to enjoy a full life, to over 101, and i think he was a lovely guy. Out of the 3,000 young men who flew in 1940, just three remain. But the courage shown during that long and costly summer will outlive all of them. Robert hall, bbc news.
