Hello and welcome to world news today. Us defence secretary mark esper has ordered a review of the screening process for Foreign Military in the us, after a saudi soldier carried out a deadly attack at a florida navy base. The gunman, who was training at the pensacola site, killed three people, including Mohammed Sameh haitham on the left, he was 19, and joshua kaleb watson, 23. And 21 year old Cameron Scott walters was also killed. The gunman wounded eight other people before he was shot dead himself. There have reports in the us media that he played videos of Mass Shootings at a dinner party the night before the attack. The fbi says its investigating with a presumption that it was an act of terrorism but made it clear they were still trying to determine a motive. We are as we do and most active shooter investigations, work with the presumption that this was an act of terrorism. This allows us to take advantage of investigative techniques that can help us more quickly identify and then eliminate any additional or potential threats to the rest of our community. As we have stated multiple times, our investigation has not led us to any information that indicates any credible threat to our community. Lets get the latest on this from chris buckler, our correspondent in washington. We are only two days on from this attack but bring us up to speed with what we know about the man behind it . The fbi is deliberately being very careful in what they say and actually that news conference, if anything, they were very cautious but clearly they are investigating the motive for this attack by 21 year old mohammed alshamrani. He was a Second Lieutenant in the Saudi Royal Air force was a Second Lieutenant in the Saudi Royal Airforce and was a Second Lieutenant in the Saudi Royal Air force and he was training on this site in pensacola florida. He was there and he actually shot people inside a classroom building and there will be two investigations taking place. First of all, how did he manage to get onto the base with a handgun because that is not normally allowed unless people have their gun or their weapon as part of their gun or their weapon as part of their duties . And secondly, they are looking into his background and perhaps we have got more information from mark esper today who talked about the fact that they were questioning other saudi individuals to try and find out more details and they were questioning those individuals, not least because it seems like one of two of them, according to mr esper, had filmed some of the student will stop it is not clear exactly when they started filming but that could provide evidence for people Going Forward and clearly there is concern. Some politicians demanding that will there will be a proper review of procedures because something seems to have been missed. Lets rewind slightly, why are these saudi soldiers at a us base specifically . The fact is, the saudi arabia forces are guided as an ally and indeed they are a very important ally as far as the us is concerned in the middle east and there has been at this long arrangement in which saudi forces are able to come and train, along with other members of other military that are allied to america, it has a number of International Stu d e nts it has a number of International Students will not think they mention on friday Something Like a couple of hundred people from other military forces are actually there on this base at any one time as aviation stu d e nts base at any one time as aviation students and that seems to be what he was doing on this base at this particular time but if you listen to a pretty influential republican senator, he is saying that something has gone badly wrong and it is time to start to look at how this operation and this Programme Works and perhaps that is an indication that they want to go far beyond vetting procedures. President trump has also been careful to try and dampen down concerns about this to some extent by talking about the fa ct some extent by talking about the fact that he had been in contact with someone in saudi arabia who has condemned this. Alshamrani seems to have posted some messages on the social media according to us media reports that and is going to be a focus for investigators and they are taking a presumption of terrorism at this stage partly because it allows them to carry out other investigative techniques but there will be questions about the motive Going Forward. Senior democrats have revealed the Housejudiciary Committee could vote on articles of impeachment against the us President Donald Trump by the end of the week. Members of the panel have been working throughout the weekend in preparation for a public hearing on monday. The president has been closely watching the developments, describing the impeachment hearing as a hoax and accusing the democrats of changing the impeachment guidelines, saying the facts are not on their side, and when you cant win the game, you change the rules. But on cbs this morning, the chairman of the house intelligence committee, adam schiff, insists any charges against the president would be determined after careful consideration. It has always been my strategy in a charging decision and an impeachment of the house which is essentially a charging decision, to charge those of which there is the strongest and most overwhelming evidence, even though you could charge other things, so that is my guiding philosophy. There is overwhelming evidence that president sought to coerce ukraine into interfering in our election, essentially sought to cheat in our next election by getting a Foreign Government to weigh in. There are just four days to go till british voters go to the polls. And in the final few days of the Election Campaign, the leaders of the two major parties are telling voters that thursdays poll is an historic chance to move the country forward. Jonathan blake reports. A warm welcome in wales today forjeremy corbyn, shoring up support in seats he needs to win. His message, that labour would transform the economy through investment in Public Services at levels not seen for decades. You cant cut your way to prosperity, you invest your way to prosperity and there is no more important investment than investing in young people, children and the next generation, and that is what. Cheering and applause. And that is what i want our Labour Government to do. Borisjohnson and the conservatives may be ahead in the polls, but it is still too close to call. Hello, mr walker, borisjohnson here. Hitting the phones today, he talked up his plan for a new immigration system, and the message he has hammered home since the start. We are a party that is going to get brexit done, by when . By january the 315t, and weve got a deal that is ready to go. An absolutely fantastic deal, isnt it . Its already there. How many members of the conservative Party Standing at this election support our deal . Every single one. Both main parties are working to win a majority, here, at westminster, meaning they can form a government and put their plans in place. But in this unpredictable election, there is every chance that might not happen, and if neither labour nor the conservatives win enough support, then the smaller parties and their policies will come into play. The Scottish National party leader has made it clear labour would have her support and suggested todayjeremy corbyn would be relying on the snp to get into power. I will never do anything that puts borisjohnson into downing street. So, he doesnt need to worry. But labour, in order to get a queens speech and a budget through, if in a minority position, need the support of another party, and if scotland votes for the snp, in a Hung Parliament giving scotland enormous leverage, then i will exercise that firstly in line with scotlands interests. Jo swinson, leader of the liberal democrats smiling in sheffield today, despite feeling a squeeze in the polls, jo swinson says neither borisjohnson orjeremy corbyn is fit to be Prime Minister, so what then if her party holds the balance of power . We have already, in the last couple of years, been working very constructively across party lines, with labour mps, with conservative mps, with nationalist mps, the green mps, independent mps, where we agree to try to secure a peoples vote, and that constructive spirit will be the way in which the lib dems will approach things after the election. The stage is being set for more drama at westminster. In just a few days the election will be over, and the votes cast will give us a new story to tell. Jonathan blake, bbc news. Jonathan blake is here with me. This is ultimately a numbers game. We are only days away from voting day. How are those numbers are shaping up according to the polls . Looking at the latest opinion polls they do show a lead for the conservative party which, if it was translated into seats, could give borisjohnson a majority of say translated into seats, could give Boris Johnson a majority of say a0 oi Boris Johnson a majority of say a0 or 0 Boris Johnson a majority of say a0 orso in the Boris Johnson a majority of say a0 or so in the house of commons but the margin of error is such that they dont have to be far wrong for that to go out the window and we could be looking at another Hung Parliament with neither main Party Getting enough seats to automatically form a government. So, there will be no complacency in the conservatives or any other party at this point in the Election Campaign and going into the final few days they will be working very hard to shore up the support they already have and we know that those crucial undecided voters, because most people may not make up their minds until late in the day so we will hearfamiliarcampaign until late in the day so we will hear familiar Campaign Messages said again and again and it really is, at this point, it seems the conservatives race to lose but labour have narrowed the gap slightly in the last few days or so. So really we cant underestimate the power of these parties and the input they may have . Yes, and the Scottish National party and the liberal Democrat Party are united in their opposition to brexit and to the conservatives and borisjohnson so whilst they dont have a formal alliance, they are doing what they can to stop borisjohnson winning a majority. They dont have a formal pa ct majority. They dont have a formal pact with labour, there are some individual seats where parties have agreed to stand aside in favour of getting a raw main supporting candidate from another party into that seat but that is one example of how brexit really is the backdrop to this election. Remain a supporting candidate. This is the reason that this election was called in the first place, brexit. And so it is an important part in the Campaign Messages. No doubt a busy weekend ahead for you and the politicians. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news. Hundreds of thousands of pro democracy campaigners have marched in hong kong. The crowd wore face masks, dressed in black and shone lights in the dark. It was the biggest rally in months. Popular chicago rapper, juice erd, has reportedly died in hospital, aged 21. The artist, whose real name was jarad anthony higgins, was best known for his 2018 hit song lucid dreams. Russia is facing a four year ban on competing in all major sports and hosting Major International events after failing to comply with the demands of the world Anti Doping Agency. Theyve recommended the sanctions after concluding that russian officials were responsible for tampering with drug test data they handed to investigators earlier this year. The sanctions need to be approved by wadas executive committee on monday. 0ur moscow correspondent Sarah Rainsford reports. These are nervous times in russian sport. Professional athletes training hard but unsure what lies ahead. Anna has won multiple medals for her country but russia is now sliding towards a four year ban from global sport. The latest twist in the doping scandal. I practice hard and i still am training and im just trying to focus on this because it is the area i can control. The problems go back to the 201a sochi 0lympics. For russia, for president putin, the games were a display of strength, superiority but the proud party ended in a huge hangover. This scientist, grigory rodchenkov, turned whistle blower on a massive doping scheme that he had been at the heart of. Yuri ganus was part of the clean up act. Under him, russias Anti Doping Agency has been praised for its new zero tolerance approach but to return fully to the sporting fold, russia had to hand over a database of athletes test results. Thousands of entries were deleted . Yes. Thousands, thousands. Now russian athletes Face Even Greater sanctions. Mr ganus told me he has come under pressure for speaking out but he insists that those with officials responsible for the this crisis should be removed. This is a real bad Old School Approach and it is impossible to use, to continue to use these approaches in the future because today, we live in a tragic time in russia for sports. You still hear people here claiming this is all an anti russia campaign, denying the evidence as russia has in so many other cases but there are also people who are amazed at their countries capacity for self harm, that instead of moving on from this crisis and ending the isolation, russia has only made the situation even worse. This week, the Sports Ministry was busy promoting exercise for all, an active lifestyle, a ban on professional athletes would be a blow to a whole generation here. When i tried asking the minister who was to blame for that, who altered the database, he refused repeatedly to answer. In politics, you can play with poker face so you can deny the undeniable thing, you can really do the bravado with your cynicism, you cannot do this in sport, you cannot do sport oii your own. Of course you can have the home olympics with turkmenistan and north korea and belarus but everyone will laugh at it. Russian athletes have devoted their lives to much higher targets and it is their Sporting Futures now at stake. Firefighters in australia are trying to contain more than 1a0 fires before very hot and windy conditions return to fan the flames in the next few days. Australia is experiencing a devastating start to its fire season due to the effects of Climate Change. Courtney bembridge reports. Authorities are calling it a mega fire. Five fires have merged and it has become too big to tackle. The front is 60 kilometres long and so far more than 300,000 hectares of bush has been burnt. The fire is now the size of australias largest city, sydney. Firefighters say it could burn untiljanuary or even february unless there is some heavy rain soon but with none in the forecast, Emergency Services are being stretched to the limit. We have got literally, more than1 million hectares burning across New South Wales at the moment and we have gotjust under 2000 firefighters and personal walking on these fire grounds and we have got communities up and down the coast, that are all being impacted by these fires. Residents were told to pack up and leave before it is too late. Putting your life on hold is the hardest thing, you know, you go out during the day and you dont know whether you are going to be able to get back in the afternoon. The fire is burning about an hour north of sydney, bringing toxic smoke and ash falling from the sky. The fire season has hit harder and earlier than previous years due to Climate Change since the crisis began in september, six people have been killed. More than 700 homes destroyed and an estimated 2 million hectares scorched. There is plenty more on all of our top stories online including that attack in florida as well so do pop along there for more information. There is going to be an awful lot of whether to look at in the week ahead. For the most few days, dominated by wind and rain. Heavy rain or heavy showers are currently by gales or severe gales. Its probably the strength of the wind that will have more of an impact with disruption possible and strongest winds are arriving right now towards the south west of the uk. We have had a lot of showers coming in during today about these two areas of cloud here are where we are seeing the winds strengthening and already that has been hitting western parts of ireland. As far as the uk are concerned, the strong winds overnight will be across the south and west of wales and in the south west of england, perhaps a 70 more Miles Per Hour and maybe some big waves. 70 five Miles Per Hour. It will be windyjust about everywhere, changing to a northerly wind by the end of the night which will drag down some colder air. During tomorrow, things slowly come down from the west and we have this ridge of High Pressure starting to build in. That will fade away most of the show has the strongest winds out to the north sea and it will be pretty windy for most of the day. It will feel cold too, quite a few showers at first, one or two coming from the irish sea and north wales but gradually it showers tend to become fewer and lighter, a lot of places will be dry with decent sunshine. A windy day but it becomes less windy but it probably will feel colder. Briefly, during monday evening, as it winds continue to drop, we may have a touch of frost for eastern areas and then the winds pick up later in the night and we do on these weather fronts and pick up milderairand bring on these weather fronts and pick up milder air and bring some rain, cloud and rain on tuesday. When putting eastwards, it is the second one that looks particularly wet and that will be a comely by some squally winds too. Temperatures are double figures for most but it is the winds and rain that is the story. That mother air gets swept away. Colder air comes in around that area of low pressure. Gale is still possible in the north west of scotla nd still possible in the north west of scotland but otherwise not as windy on wednesday, a day of sunshine and showers. Perhaps some thundery and pushing their way into eastern areas will stop it will be quite a chilly day, typical temperatures six, possibly seven celsius. This is bbc world news, the headlines.
