People pay too little for us medicines around the world and that is the kind of agenda of the Prime Minister wants to get involved with. We believe in the nhs, free at the point of use and under no circumstances will we sell it off to anybody. Millions will have watched but how many will have changed their mind . We are live in the aftermath of the debate in maidstone. Well get the reaction of voters in ipswich, to get their response to tonights debate. Also on the programme. Described as britains worst sex offender Joseph Mccann is found guilty of kidnapping and mutliple rapes. Hed been released from prison, by mistake. Jason mccann is a horrendously dangerous individual, who has shown complete contempt for his victims. He is clearly one of the most dangerous sex offenders we have ever seen in this country. The teenager who threw a six year old boy from the tenth floor viewing platform at the tate modern art gallery, pleads guilty to attempted murder. The remarkable recovery of the british woman, whose heart stopped for six hours after collapsing in a snowstorm, in the spanish pyrenees. And, dust up in the desert. Britains anthonyjoshua, looks to regain his boxing world heavy weight title, against andy ruiz, in saudi arabia. And coming up on sportsday on bbc news, Nigel PearsonBoris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn have gone head to head in a live bbc tv debate, with just under a week to go before the general election. The two leaders clashed repeatedly on how they would handle brexit, the nhs, crime and security, and trust in politicians. The Prime Minister claimed, in his closing remarks, that election day would be a choice between another hung parliament, led by mr corbyn, or a conservative government that would resolve brexit, and get a parliament that would work for the people. The labour leader said his party would End Child Poverty and properly fund the National Health service. Well, our political editor, Laura Kuenssberg is tonight in maidstone in kent, where the debate took place. Laura. This is what happens after these set piece events in election campaigns that matter so much, politicians are here spinning furiously, having verbal punch ups trying to decide who was the winner, but after 60 minutes of verbal jousting who was the winner, but after 60 minutes of verbaljousting and just six days to go, who if anyone out of the main rivals really came out on top . Whose night would it be, the contender, with the crowd, or the man who called the election and would like to keep hisjob . Both we re would like to keep hisjob . Both were arguing for 60 minutes in a bid to make or break their campaigns, the audience in charge. Starting with a blast against both of them from theirformer party with a blast against both of them from their former party leaders. the recent intervention ofjohn major worrying to you, mrjohnson . And is tony blair calls mark recent interview tony blairs recent intervention also worrying to you, Jeremy Corbyn . I need a party that is totally united unlikejohn major, and everyone in the party backs my dear. Totally united because you got rid of everyone who did not agree with you. We have a broad range of views in our party. Think for a moment on what nine years of austerity has done it to the people of this country. And then, of course, brexit, the question of our times. Can you guarantee it will happen next year . How will we be better off under the brexit deal compared to what we already have . We will negotiate a leave agreement with the eu within three months that will protect trade and jobs and the Peace Process in Northern Ireland. We will put that alongside remain in a referendum within six months and that will be the end of the matter. Everybody on the labour front bench is campaigning to remain apart from mr corbyn who is neutral on the matter, so who is going to secure this deal . How can you get a deal from brussels for brexit if you dont actually believe in it . That is the mystery. He will walk out of a relationship with the eu into relationship with nobody and that is where the chaos will come. What is your answer to that . That shows a slight ignorance of the reality. What of labour claims that the torys brexit deal would hurt Northern Ireland . Torys brexit deal would hurt Northern Ireland . I find it curious to say the least to be lectured about the union between Great Britain and Northern Ireland by a man who all his life has campaigned to break up that union and actually supported for four decades the ira in theircampaign, supported for four decades the ira in their campaign, violently, to destroy it. I have always wanted to see a Peace Process in Northern Ireland and that is exactly what we have got and thank you to the Labour Government that negotiated it. What about the promises made by both sides of the Health Service that have been pushed day after day . The Prime Minister the day after he appointed said they would be a0 new hospitals and a week later that became 20 and a bit later it became six new hospitals and he seems to have a problem with the figures about Hospital Building in britain. Perhaps i can explain, the cash allocation for the hospital bill is for six initially but we are putting in the seed funding out so that in ten years time as a result of the decisions taken in the last 130 days by this government if there will be ao by this government if there will be 40 new hospitals. Are you still claiming the nhs is up for sale because your document does not seem to show any such thing . Read the documents that were discussed in secret and the government refused to release them between themselves and the Us Administration about access to public services. I have to say this is pure Bermuda Triangle stuff and we have at this time and time again for the labour party during the election campaign. We have heard this. We will hear about little green men next. Your party oppose the formation of the nhs in the first place. You are going back to 1940 now. I know you have a long memory of politics. The important thing is, your party has presided over cuts in the nhs and a social ca re system over cuts in the nhs and a social care system that is in crisis. There are 50,000 more nurses than there we re are 50,000 more nurses than there were under the labour party. The tories planning tens of billions of extra spending and labour hundreds of millions, who should be in charge of millions, who should be in charge of balancing the books . Tens of millions. How can we do all of this extra spending . They would rack up oui extra spending . They would rack up our debts about spending up to 1. 2 trillion and what that would mean is a tax burden of £2a00 per taxpayer will stop the problem is we have gone too far down the road of free Market Economics and we have created too much inequality. We will be making substantial investments but whilst bearing down on our debt over the course of parliament. And then bitterness and politics, how have the tories dealt with racism against muslims and labour racism against muslims and labour racism againstjewish against muslims and labour racism against jewish people . We are having an independent inquiry into anybody who is guilty of any such offence and they are out first bounce if they are guilty. The scratching is a politics and the bitterness of the acrimony is a function of our inability to get brexit done. Im the leader that introduced an investigation process in to roost a disciplinary process, introduced a process of education, introduced a process of education, introduced a process for dealing with egregious cases. A failure of leadership is when you use racist remarks to describe people in other countries. My party will never do that. And then one of the biggest question is, who and what to believe . What punishment is appropriate for elected politicians who lie during political campaigns . They should be made to go on their knees, through the chamber of the house of commons, scourging themselves with copies of their offending documents which claim to prove one thing and actually prove something quite different. When people painting slogans on the side of a bus that are slogans on the side of a bus that a re totally slogans on the side of a bus that are totally unsustainable, maybe it is time and that we did have an independent monitoring of what goes on. Actually if you look at then i must be put on the side of the bus and the figure we paid to the eu, the number is going up. After a torrid campaign, no handshakes at the end, but the hard won results next week will be your decision and not a gentlemans agreement. So, what did voters think of tonights final debate of the campaign . 0ur political correspondent, alex forsyth reports now, from ipswich. It is the view of those watching that really matter tonight, and in ipswich a labour tory marginal seat a group of voters gather, some already decided, some are wanting to be convinced. Borisjohnsons favoured brexit phrase did not take long to come up but did not convince undecided voter david. |j long to come up but did not convince undecided voter david. I think he needs to slow down on saying the words get brexit done. I have heard it so many times, and i want to hear about other things apart from brexit. Students victoria and elliott are persuaded by the tories brexit offer. I agree with what borisjohnson said, but im not sure what Jeremy Corbyn is trying to get out of it, to be honest. And this man and nick think that labour have the right approach. In terms of what corbyn is saying, his neutrality is representative of where the country is at. So what about the claims about the nhs . I thinkJeremy Corbyn is scaremongering and i think hes going for the fear factor. We are passionate about the nhs, it is the thing we are proud of and i think we would march the streets whoever we were, whatever party be followed, we would march the streets and defend it to the hilt. The argument we have seen it to the hilt. The argument we have seen is a distraction, if you look at the manifesto is on the nhs, it is quite clear that labour will invest more heavily than the conservatives. Local landlord oliver approached the debate undecided while businesswoman lynn had been leaning towards the tories. |j while businesswoman lynn had been leaning towards the tories. I dont like borisjohnson, leaning towards the tories. I dont like Boris Johnson, but leaning towards the tories. I dont like borisjohnson, but ijust want to get things done. Did anybody persuade you . I was not persuaded by borisjohnson and persuade you . I was not persuaded by Boris Johnson and it was a rehash of things he had already said, but i was also quite disappointed with Jeremy Corbyn. It has left me with more questions. This debate is the hardest one for a lot of people to pick a side because of how argumentative it is. I do think the ideas of labour are too far fetched. The sensible thing here is to vote labour, to be honest, but the thing im depressed about is the fact there was no debate about Climate Change which is the big issue. Whether the performances tonight persuaded people or put off, the ultimate verdict will be in less than a week. Alex forsyth, bbc news, ipswich. Lets return to our political editor, Laura Kuenssberg, in maidstone. Did you hear anything tonight that might actually change the dynamic of the campaign with little more than six days to go before the polls open . Time is short and it was interesting hearing from those people watching tonight, there wasnt much enthusiasm for either side and tonight we have seen the main rivals on their best behaviour, neither of them were really going at it hammerand neither of them were really going at it hammer and tongs and neither of them it really wanted to give themselves the risk of crashing and burning. They were trying to appeal to their core voters, people who have already made up their mind. Maybe we should not be surprised that it did not feel like there was a big Game Changing moment where either borisjohnson a big Game Changing moment where either Boris Johnson dropped a big Game Changing moment where either borisjohnson dropped the ball orJeremy Corbyn managed to land a new goal at the back of the net. If we think about the broad context of the campaign, where we are within six days to go, broadly speaking, look at the polls, the tories are ahead consistently. There are differences in terms of how much, but labour are consistently trailing. Therefore it was Boris Johnsons side who were deeply nervous that something terrible might go wrong but it didnt really, i dont think, anything that will change their standing in the polls, and forJeremy Corbyn this was one of his last big chance is to cause an upset or start narrowing the gap andi an upset or start narrowing the gap and i dont think for labour we saw any signs tonight of anything that could really spark their side. But their core voters, people who are die hard in the red and blue corners, they will have watched their man out there and felt more certain of the decision they have made but it wont be there who really are in charge. It will be those people who are still floating and are not sure which way to go. Laura thanks forjoining us. A man who carried out brutal sex attacks on 11 women and children, has been found guilty of 37 offences. Joseph mccann, who was a convicted burglar, had been released from prison by mistake. He went on to choose his victims at random, kidnapping them, over a two week period last spring. The women and one boy were aged between 11 and 71 years old. This report from our Home Affairs Correspondent june kelly, contains some details, you may find distressing. In the front passenger seat of this car, a 21 year old woman is being kept captive byJoseph Mccann. He has grabbed her off the street with a knife to her throat, held her and raped her. She is too traumatised to escape. As he pays for his petrol, this is a man at the start of a perverted mission to attack, terrify and humiliate women and children. Mccann kidnaps this first victim after she leaves this nightclub in watford. Her ordeal lasts five hours. A few days later, in walthamstow, east london, a 25 year old is walking home from this tube station. Mccann spots the woman, her identity is disguised, then stops and seizes her, subjecting her to 1a hours of depravity and violence in his car. Still holding this woman, he moves to edgware in north london and kidnaps a 21 year old off the street. He drives to a pub car park in hertfordshire and, now with two prisoners, he stops and rapes the 21 year old. He then heads to watford and this hotel. Hello hello . Keeping watch on his captives, mccann, wearing rosary beads around his neck, tries to book a room so he can continue his abuse. But, when he returns to the car, one of the women smashes a vodka bottle over his head, and both finally manage to break free. With a manhunt under way, mccann evades capture and travels to the north west. In lancashire, he rapes a girl of 17 and her 11 year old brother after taking them and their mother prisoner. Within hours, in greater manchester, he abducts and rapes a woman of 71, then kidnaps and sexually assaults a 13 year old girl. He crosses into cheshire. In congleton, he grabs two ia year old girls of the street. Police then spot and chase his stolen fiat. He hits this mercedes. Armed police they lose him, and he abandons his car with the girls in it. Having shaken off the police, he turns up at a pub. Just came in for a drink. Surprisingly, he had a malibu and lemonade. I knew he was a dodgy character when he walked in, because he had quite a sway on him. He asked to use the phone. It was very bizarre. He was writing down a lot of things as well, like postcodes and phone numbers. He is eventually found by police, who catch him hiding up a tree. For hours, there is a stand off, before he is finally brought down and arrested. He tells officers, if youd caught me for the first two, the rest of this wouldnt have happened. Joseph mccann is a horrendously dangerous individual who has shown complete contempt for his victims. He is clearly one of the most dangerous sex offenders, i think, that we have ever seen in this country. Joseph mccanns background makes this case a catastrophic failure by the criminalJustice System. It can now be reported that mccann, who began offending when he was 11, should have been in prison when he was roaming around the country, raping women and children and threatening to slit their throats. He had been wrongly released. In 2008, he was jailed for an aggravated burglary at the home of an 85 year old man. In 2017, he was freed on licence. The same year, he was arrested for new offences and should have been recalled to prison, but he wasnt. In 2018, he was sentenced for his new crimes and should have gone before the parole board before he was considered safe to be freed. Instead, at the start of this year, he was mistakenly let out and, soon after, went on his rampage. Joseph mccann refused to leave prison to attend his trial a controlling individual but, at heart, a coward. He didnt have to hear the testimony and tears of those he abused and face up to the enduring damage he has done to them. June kelly, bbc news, the old bailey. Our home editor mark easton is here. This man was released from prison, by mistake, and he went on to commit these terrible crimes, how on earth could that have happened . You know, clive, the most fundamental responsibility of the criminal Justice System is to keep the public safe. Mccann was known to be extremely dangerous, in fact the courts had done everything they could to keep the public safe, by giving him a sentence that meant he could not be released from prison until experts were convinced it was safe enough. But the system failed. And not just safe enough. But the system failed. And notjust once, it failed time and time again, somehow despite all the red flags, the warnings, the history, despite a judge saying he should go back to prison, back on the indeterminate sentence he had been on, the Probation Service did not recall mccann to prison, in fact, ing when he broke his license instead he was treated like a model prisoner, released in the normal way, and then as we know went on this appalling rampage. A first minister ber of probation officers have been number of probation officers have been disciplined. You to ask yourself whether the system is broken. An all Party ParliamentaryCommittee Said budget cuts and what it calls bodged government reforms had left the Probation Service in a mess. The district responsible for mccann was more than 100 probation officers short. Now there was a time when a catastrophic failure like this would have seen perhaps a government minister offer to resign. No hint of that tonight. Instead, an apology, and that unpublished internal review from officials. Small wonder people are calling for an independent inquiry. Thank thank you. A teenager has pleaded guilty to attempted murder, after a six year old boy was thrown off a viewing platform at the tate modern art gallery in london. Jonty bravery whos 18, hurled the young boy off a tenth floor platform, back in august. Heres helena wilkinson. The six year old boy was with his mother on this tenth floor viewing platform, when out of nowhere a teenager appeared, picked him up, held him over the railings and threw him. He fell 100 feet on to this concrete roof. There was a little commotion with a very loud primal scream. The childs mother then tried to climb the rail. I restrained her and pulled her back. He didnt seem to have any remorse, hejust almost giggled at one point, saying, i did it, yeah, i did it. The boy was treated at the scene, before being taken away by paramedics on a stretcher, under this blue tarpaulin. He suffered a bleed to the brain and life changing injuries. Today, jonty bravery, whos autistic and suffers from a personality disorder, admitted trying to murder the boy. The teenager was under the care of the local authority. After he was arrested by the police, he told them he had planned to hurt someone at tate modern so he could be on the television, and he wanted people to know he was unhappy with the care he was getting. Four months on, and the little boy is still recovering. Today, his parents said. For the family, the horror and trauma they experienced that day will never leave them. Helena wilkinson, bbc news, at the old bailey. A couple from berkshire have been awarded nearly £120,000 in damages, after a judge ruled their local authority had refused to allow them to adopt a child, on grounds of race. Sandeep and reena mander from maidenhead have indian heritage, and were told they stood a better chance if they looked to adopt in the sub continent. Our Community Affairs correspondent, adina campbell, has been speaking to them. Justice for sandeep and reena mander. Today, the couple have been awarded nearly £120,000 in damages plus costs after a court ruled they were unfairly treated because of their ethnicity. I was really, really hurt. I think, first off, i was shocked. I cant believe the colour or culture of what they are assuming my culture is is coming into play at this stage. And for them to also say, go to, i think it was india or pakistan, to where our culture would be better fitted. What made us really angry was the assumption of what our values and cultural beliefs were. I mean, both reena and i are british born. Were Roman Catholic schooled. The couple were unable to conceive over a seven year period, including a number of failed ivf cycles. They contacted adopt berkshire in 2016, but were soon told their application wouldnt be processed because of their sikh indian heritage. The attitude we got on the phone from the lady that was on the call just broke our hearts, really. In a statement, windsor and maidenhead bureau says. It sends a really powerful message that there are equality laws out there which should help and benefit the entire society. But sometimes, you do have to make some noise. The manders now have an 18 month old son who they adopted from the us. Despite the problems they faced in the uk, they hope to adopt more children in the future. Adina campbell, bbc news. Doctors say theyre astounded by the recovery of a british woman, who was in cardiac arrest for six hours, after collapsing in freezing weather hiking in the spanish pyrenees. Audrey schoeman developed severe hypothermia, when she was caught in a snowstorm last month. Our medical correspondent fergus walsh, has her amazing story of survival. The woman who cheated death, flanked by her husband and the medical team that rescued her. Audrey schoeman can now reflect on her heart stopping experience. It feels really incredible that i survived it and just really lucky to be here and to be able to get on with my life. I am just happy. She set out with her husband from this mountain refuge in the catalan pyrenees last month when they were caught in a snowstorm. She collapsed and fell unconscious. I thought she was dead because i was trying to feel for a pulse, trying to feel. My fingers were also known, so i wasnt sure if it was my fingers, but i couldnt feel her breath, i couldnt feel her heartbeat or anything. In the freezing conditions, her body temperature dropped from 37 to just 18 degrees. But it was this super cool state which protected her brain and body from deteriorating. 0nce airlifted to a hospital in barcelona, she was connected to a machine which took over the function of her heart and lungs, re oxygenating her blood and gradually warming her body. Six hours after her heart stopped beating, they revived her using a defibrillator. Apart from some numbness in her hands, the english teacher, who lives in barcelona, has made a full recovery. And it has not put her off hiking. Probably this winter i will not go to the mountains, but i hope in spring we will be able to start hiking and trekking again. I dont want this to take away that hobby from me. Doctors are astounded by audrey schoemans recovery, saying she has set a record in spain for the longest cardiac arrest, hailing her a medical miracle. But for me, i feel i accomplished my dreams and i still want to accomplish more dreams and that is what we are going to do. Saudi arabias human rights record has made this a controversial location for the middle easts first ever heavyweight title fight. That hasnt stopped fans from travelling here. Although the strict local laws still apply. I know we have to respect the rules but the fact that we cant even celebrate would be. That would be tough. With tequila they both obviously want it, but it is just a question of who wants it more. Will it be a knockout, will he go the distance . A knockout and aj will win.
