Five women who accuse the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein of abusing them are calling on Prince Andrew to testify in their cases. Their lawyer told bbc panorama he plans to serve subpoenas asking the duke to give evidence. The programme included an interview with the woman who says she was forced to have sex with the prince when she was 17. He categorically denies any such relationship. Darragh macintyre reports. The allegations made by Virginia Giuffre about Prince Andrew have raised questions that wont go away. The lawyer for five ofJeffrey Epsteins accusers says he wants Prince Andrew to testify as a witness in their court cases. The women say the prince witnessed how epstein and his guests were given massages at the sex offenders home. Panorama has been told that subpoenas have been prepared for the cases, and could be served on Prince Andrew if he returns to the United States. And it means that the next time Prince Andrew visits the states, he faces being ordered to give evidence, whether he likes it or not. With respect to Prince Andrew, i think he needs to come clean, and i think the facts need to be revealed. Prince andrew says that he did not see, witness or suspect any suspicious behaviour during his visits to mr epsteins homes in florida, new york and the caribbean, and he says he is willing to help any appropriate Law Enforcement agency with their investigations if required. Virginia giuffre, who says she was trafficked to london by epstein to have sex with Prince Andrew, told panorama that she was introduced to him by the princes long standing friend Ghislaine Maxwell. She says that, after a visit to a nightclub, Ghislaine Maxwell instructed her to have sex with the prince. In court documents, Ghislaine Maxwell says all Virginia Giuffres allegations are lies. The people on the inside are going to keep coming up with these ridiculous excuses, like the photo was doctored. I mean, come on. Im calling bs on this, because thats what it is. He knows what happened, i know what happened, and theres only one of us telling the truth, and i know thats me. People who say that youre not telling the truth, they point to inconsistencies in your tale. How do you account for those . You are left with a foggy memory sometimes, you really are. So yeah, you know, i might be wrong on dates, absolutely. I might be wrong on places, even, sometimes. But one thing i can tell you is that you never forget the face of someone whos heaved over you. For his part, the duke of york emphatically denies any form of sexual contact or relationship with Virginia Giuffre, and says any claim to the contrary is false and without foundation. Darragh macintyre, bbc news. More on that story in our news briefing a little bit later in this programme. Us trade officials are threatening to impose tariffs of up to 100 on a range of french goods worth 2. 1; billion. Its a response to french plans to tax revenue earned by american Tech Companies. An official report in the us describes the digital tax as discriminatory. Well, lets stay on the subject of tariffs. Not only is the us preparing tariffs on french exports but it will reinstate additional tariffs on steel and aluminium from argentina and brazil with immediate effect. Simoney kyriakou, editor of financial adviser, joins me now. Good morning. Nice to you. This is an interesting turn of events, 100 tariffs on french goods going into the United States. Cheese, champagne, handbags, all sorts of goods could be hit really hard. Where do you think this might go . Well, trump has said he often likes trade wars and he uses tariffs quite punitively, as weve seen with brazil and argentina and with china. I think this is quite dangerous territory. Weve already seen how it affected wall street and the dow jones fell when the steel tariffs we re jones fell when the steel tariffs were imposed instead and instead of it being a strong day of trading with the black friday sales, it closed on a low, so these announcements are dampening the us market. In asia, we are seeing a similar thing on the main markets. Japan and hong kong seeing declines. And weve seen these tit for tat measures being employed for, although that was in relation to the boeing versus airbus, tariffs then, and the wto allowed america to impose tariffs for what it saw as illegal lending owing on to promote airbus over boeing employed before. So they are allowed to put ta riffs before. So they are allowed to put tariffs on cheese, scotch whiskey and things like that. But this is different, this is france that they are saying Tech Companies like google et cetera are paying enough tax fairly. There complaining they are complaining about them not paying tax and off shoring. This is about france trying to restore the balance and then trump saying im not going to let this happen, and i will hit you on handbags and champagne. As we have mentioned, this is the us mulling retaliation to the french tech tax. Lots of information on bbc online about what that would mean for certain goods coming from france into the us. Thank you, simoney, for now. She will be back with the news briefing and we have lots of interesting stories to get our teeth stuck into then. Lets move on. In northern syria, at least 30 civilians are reported killed in two separate attacks. Its the latest flare up between Government Forces and rebel fighters. Rich preston reports. In the other, 11 reported killed in a turkish strike on the kurdish held city of tal rifaat. The Syrian Government is supported in its fight by russia. The rebels are supported by, amongst others, turkey. But turkey doesnt support the kurds, who have been instrumental in the fight against is, but who turkey views as terrorists. Mass evacuations as typhoon kammuri makes landfall in the philippines. The british Prime Minister borisjohnson will urge nato leaders to put on a united front today as they gather in britain to mark the 70th anniversary of the alliance. Over two days the 29 allies, including us president donald trump, will hold talks amid growing divisions over natos future. Heres our diplomatic correspondent, james landale. Donald trump may have arrived for a meeting of the nato leaders, but the big question is weather he will be able to resist saying anything about the general election. White house Officials Say the president knows he shouldnt wade into other countries politics, but the conservatives have made sure he will not have a one on one meeting with Boris Johnson to avoid pictures that could be used by his opponents. This evening the Prime Minister and the 28 other nato leaders will be guests of the queen at buckingham palace, for a reception to mark the 70th anniversary of the alliance. The smiles may be ratherfalse. For when they meet tomorrow at a hotel in watford, the leaders may find it ha rd to watford, the leaders may find it hard to find hide their differences. There are tensions over turkeys offensive in syria and the purchase of russian anti aircraft missiles. President macron of france has angered some by saying nato is suffering strategic handout. An donald trump is expected again to push for european allies to spend more on their own defence. So expectations of this meeting are low. It is very, very important for europe and the uk underfor low. It is very, very important for europe and the uk under for world peace, i believe, and therefore i think that importance will be reflected in what happens. The summit, i think, reflected in what happens. The summit, ithink, will reflected in what happens. The summit, i think, will be a bit of a shambles, because it is taking place in the middle of an Election Campaign witha in the middle of an Election Campaign with a lot of debate going on among people, im not sure it will come up with anything useful. Some have described nato as one of the most successful military alliances in history. British troops are seen here training in the baltic to deter russian aggression. But at this meeting, the question may be weather the leaders have time to resolve their differences, or merely paper over the cracks. Heres our briefing on some of the key events happening later. European Commission President , jean claude juncker, officially hands over to his successor, ursula von der leyen, at a ceremony at the commission in brussels. Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg is due to arrive in portugal after sailing across the atlantic. She will then head to madrid to speak at the cop25 Climate Change conference. Later today, the ceo of tesla and spacex will testify in a defamation suit brought against him by vernon unsworth, a british man who helped with the rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach from a flooding thai cave injuly 2018. Northern ireland has been at the heart of the Brexit Process because its the only part of the uk which has a land border with another eu country. The issue has led to increased political divisions, reflecting the two sides of a conflict which largely ended in the late 1990s. 0ur ireland correspondent chris page has been asking people who dont easily fit into the main political groups what they make of the choices in the general election. The North Eastern corner of the island of ireland is a state apart, separated from the rest of the United Kingdom by the sea. Here, the british conservative and labour parties have little support. The effects of a long conflict which killed more than 3000 people are still strongly felt, particularly in the capital city, where walls stand between rival communities. Well, the centre of belfast is a place where people of all backgrounds come together. But outside of here, Northern Ireland is a split society. The division is not over economics 01 even the division is not over economics or even social attitudes. It is about identity. The two political tribes are unionists who want Northern Ireland to remain in the uk, and irish nationalists, who wa nted uk, and irish nationalists, who wanted to become part of the republic of ireland. But what if you do not easily fit into those groups . Doctor elodie is a french academic working in belfast. She has also lived in belgium and scotland, where constitutional issues are also prominent. But she finds Northern Ireland offers unusually narrow choices for voters. One of the surprising thing is, to a degree, is that within blocks where you would already see a lot of left right competition happening, as you might in other places, for instance, if you take for instance, say, catalonia, and the constitutional issue, even among the nationalist parties, you will have some that are more on the right and others more on the left. Brexit has deepened rifts and hardened attitudes. Most people in Northern Ireland voted to remain in the european union. Nationalists oppose brexit. The biggest Unionist Party supports it. For people who have moved back home after years away, the bitterness of the tone is striking. Victoria lived in the us until recently. There is definitely some things where politics are the same everywhere, i think there has been a real shift in the language that politics have used, no matter where you are. I remember being home for a visit when the brexit boat was happening, and hearing their results and just knowing, at that moment, but donald trump was going to become the next president of the United States, just because of the way discourse in politics was going generally. But even people who have lived here all their lives dont a lwa ys lived here all their lives dont always fit into the tribal politics. For nationalists, there are only left wing parties. For those from the unionist tradition, the main parties are on the right. Unionists who have liberal views on social issues like abortion can feel they are not represented. It is frustrating that there is nobody really articulating that perspective from a very left wing perspective, from a very left wing perspective, from a very liberal perspective, or if there are people doing that their voices are not being heard. So it is frustrating because it is really what unionism they gets associated with, right wing politics. And you feel like you have to be supportive of that. Many people left because of this sort of violence. But peace has encouraged some to return, and also brought new migrants to Northern Ireland. Few places in europe have changed so much during this century. But the politics of the present still often feels to find by the past. Defined. Now its time to get all the latest from the bbc sports centre.
