Though the rain is diminishing, we have a number of flood warnings out. The rain is meandering through Northern Ireland for the rest of the afternoon across the north of wales, the midlands, Northern England for a time and heading south. For the south weve got some sunshine, but a scattering of heavy showers. Its relatively mild steel but already the northerly wind is making its presence felt further north, bringing in the sunshine but equally a few wintry showers which will continue, particularly over the hill, in northern and eastern areas overnight, pushing our weather front further southwards leaving rather damp surfaces behind. With a widespread frost temperatures are going to plummet after dark. Is becomes the main concern if you are travelling through the night and first thing tomorrow morning with possibly the odd bit of mist and fog, but more the following night ice is the main concern. Tomorrow, perhaps cloudier but not that much rain, patchy light rain for the most pa rt rain, patchy light rain for the most part but for many of us, bar a few coastal showers in the east, its looking much drier and much sunnier. However, tomorrow night looks even colder as the cold air eventually filtered into southern parts of england and south wales as well, with many of the towns and cities dropping below freezing. Again, saturday morning, it could be quite frosty with some patchy fog. Saturday is looking like a mostly dry day but the low pressure is never too far away. Its the fly in the ointment if you like through tomorrow, through saturday in particular as it looks set to bring more rain and, possibly because weve got the cold air and a little bit of winteriness over the hills weve got to watch for and still are showers near the east coast and the North York Moors tomorrow and saturday giving a fluttering of snow but for most of us its cold and bright and sunny. Similar on sunday. We are starting to see perhaps a little bit more getting into the north and west but again it does look largely fine and dry. Its not warm though for or 5 degrees in the north, six or seven in the south. Four or north, six or seven in the south. Fouror5 north, six or seven in the south. Four or 5 degrees in the north. The chilly weather does hang on. A lot of dry weather, we havent seen that much dry weatherfor some of dry weather, we havent seen that much dry weather for some time. For enniskillen as we go towards mid week the rain and the milder air sta rts week the rain and the milder air starts to come in. This time it looks as if the milder air, the rain, will be affecting the north and west of the uk instead of where weve had so much wet weather. A reminder of our top story. Conservatives and labour are both accused of not present incredible Spending Plans by a leading Economic Research group. Both though risk ending up borrowing a lot more than they are saying, either because we end up with the economy doing much worse, or an labours case because they dont getting as much tax as they dont getting as much tax as they are suggesting, or for the conservatives they actually find they have to spend more than they are saying. More on that story throughout the afternoon on the bbc news channel. Thats all from the bbc news at one. The second test against new zealand starts tonight, and england wicket keeper jos buttler could miss out with a back problem. Ollie pope could keep wicket in his absence, he last took the gloves in febriary playing for the england lionskent playing for the england lions. Kent batsman zak crawley could make his debut should buttler have to sit out the match. England lost the first test against the kiwis and a lot of the build up to this match has focussed on the captains poor form and englands failure with the bat. In terms of when we say bat long it doesnt mean that we have to block it for three days and hope that means we will get to a big score. It means reading the situation and making good decisions for long periods of time which allow you to bat long. The way i will do that will be different to dom sibley and rory burns does that. Everyone has their own way of doing it. Theres Live Commentary on the first day of the second test in hamilton on radio 5 live sports extra. Security forces in iraq have killed at least 15 protesters in the Southern City of nassiriya. They opened fire to clear two bridges being blocked by the demonstrators. More details from our middle east correspondent, martin patience, who is following developments from neigbouring lebanon. In the past two months, we have seen enormous demonstrations against the government right across iraq. And often they have turned violent, with the Security Forces mowing down the protesters, most of whom are young iraqis. We saw that again this morning in the Southern City of nasiriyah. Protesters were occupying two bridges. The Security Forces moved in to clear them away. And at least a dozen of the demonstrators were killed in the violence. The reason young iraqis say they are coming out onto the streets is because they wantjobs, they want opportunities, they want an end to government corruption. Now, separately, we saw demonstrators set the iranian consulate on fire in the Southern City of najaf. Now, that is significant because the demonstrators are against the government. But increasingly what we are seeing is them also being against iran. Iran has huge influence across iraq for religious, as well as cultural reasons, but it also controls powerful militias which operate in the country. Iran has condemned the violence and has called on iraq to arrest the perpetrators, the men that carried out this attack, the Second Attack that it has seen on its consulate in that country in the last few weeks. One of the uks biggest cinema chains plans to resume showing the film blue story. Vue stop showing the film about london gangs after a number of incidents added cinemas including a mass fight at the branch in birmingham. It was this brawl involving up to 100 teenagers in birmingham that led to vue banning blue story, a film about two friends caught up in postcode gang rivalry in london. It started in the actual screening itself of blue story, and it spilt out into the foyer. And then it got really kly. But the decision to withdraw the film from all its uk screens upset many, including blue storys director. It was, like, breaking my heart. Because im getting calls every day, were doing this well, were doing that well, doing so well, its getting so well received. And then, to get pulled from every cinema. Vues boss said the decision was only ever about safety, and the film will soon return to its screens, with additional security arrangements. Speaking to the community, speaking to the producers and directors, we are now comfortable that we can guarantee the safety of our staff and customers to put it back on our screens. Both sides will hope the focus can now return to the film itself. Campaigners are warning that violence during consensual sex has become normalised. Research for bbc radio 5 live suggests more than a third of women in the uk under the age of a0 have experienced unwanted slapping, choking, gagging or spitting. The centre for Womens Justice says it Shows Growing pressure on young women to agree to dangerous and demeaning acts. Earlier on the Victoria Derbyshire programme, chloe tilley spoke to Fiona Mackenzie who runs the campign group, we cant consent to this the sex and relationships blogger and influencer, oloni and first anna adams, who spoke about how shes been the victim of non consensual violent acts during sex. During consensual sex i have experienced non consensual violence such as hair pulling and attempts to choke me, which i resisted. As you can imagine, it is quite threatening, quite intimidating. I spoke about it with my friends after and found that it was ubiquitous. All of my friends had nearly experienced violence as well. And to be clear, was this when you are in a relationship or was this casual sex . I am just wondering when that conversation happens, if it happens, or if this came out of the blue. Yes, it was with casual partners. There was no conversation. It was just enforced upon me. What did you do . I stopped it every time. It wasnt how i wanted to have sex. I did not feel comfortable. And were the men surprised at your reaction . Did they think you are enjoying it . I would be surprised if they thought i was enjoying it. I think they were surprised i stopped the encounters. It is difficult to know where to begin on this because, i mean, there are so many elements to it. Lets talk about this so called rough sex defence. Because i think this is important in this case. There has been a lot of Media Coverage recently. Fiona, talk to us about what that is and how it works. So what we research is a man, it is always a man in the uk, claims at some point in his contact with the criminal Justice System that the woman he is accused of killing or injuring consented to the violence as part of rough sex, bdsm or a sex game gone wrong. So we have found 59 uk women have been killed in this way, many more injured. Nine uk women in court cases in the last few weeks in rough case defences. They are increasingly common. What is so terrifying is how it links to this complete normalisation about violence against women. We started hearing from women immediately after starting up the campaign that they were experiencing choking, punching, slapping, spitting during sex, which is just an atrocity. Looking at the figures is horrifying. Where do you think this is coming from . I would definitely say the glamorisation of porn. We are all subscribing to a narrative that we believe is normal when it comes to sex and we are forgetting to communicate. We are forgetting that we need to have a conversation that includes consent. Am i allowed to do this to you . How do you feel when i do that . It is not evenjust choking, as you mentioned and the spitting, it even goes as far as stealthing well, people are removing condoms during sex. So these are conversations that they dont see in porn are now being emulated in real life. So it is the normalisation. Young men, in yourview, are watching pawn and they are thinking it is normal. Exactly. They dont know it is the person who created that in hollywood and that is not the reality of sex. The reality of sex is a need to be trust and communication every time. Is this the same as same sex relationships every time or are we hearing the same . We only hear womens stories at the moment and it is nonconsensual violence and that can leave women just traumatised but also badly injured. These men who did this to you, where they are a type of man . Did you have any sense that this might be their preferred sexual encounter . No, there is no tell tale signs. These were just ordinary men. They went from a particular group. The only unifying factor was that they all assumed i would be interested in nonconsensual violence and i would assume they are consumers of pawn. You go into schools, dont you . What do young girls say about this . Do they feel they have to go along with this . When i talk to them about consent i always talk start off soft, what goes on in the playground, if a guy is hugging you you are allowed to say that you dont want it if you dont. And then what consent does look like so they understand when they are older, when they go to university, that is when consent culture is looked at. Ijust basically make sure they understand what they need to do when they feel like their trust is being broken. Do you get the sense that women feel they have to go along with this or do you feel that women feel they do have a voice and it is absolutely fine to say no if they are not comfortable . So many women have been coerced or forced into comfortable . So many women have been coerced orforced into this comfortable . So many women have been coerced or forced into this and comfortable . So many women have been coerced orforced into this and have been violently assaulted after pushing a way of saying no. It is not always safe to say no to this andi not always safe to say no to this and i think that is the scary thing. If you are in that situation it is very difficult to feel you can talk your way out of it. It is extremely frightening. So what do you think a mans rollers in all of this . I dont want to put this all on men because clearly there is a whole lot of men who arent doing this but what do men need to do to make sure this isnt happening . Understand consent. They really need to understand consent. Made has to be a conversation where people are highlighting it means when you use safe words unsafe actions in the bedroom. That is fine if you are in a long term relationship but if you meet someone in a bar and you end up going back to their flats or they come to yours, isnt that a slightly difficult conversation to have i being a bit. I dont think you should violently assault someone u nless should violently assault someone unless you have clearly talked about it. If a man understands that that is not what you want . We know that a lot of young girls and young boys are exposed to pornography. I think that young girls are also taught lessons from pornography and that they should be submissive and that their boundaries dont exist. I think that is really important which is why i wanted to be public about this because it is important for young girls as well as men to know that their boundaries are valid. Can the porn industry play a role in this or is that too much to expect . There is a lot of ethical porn out there. I definitely feel like it does play a role and as you mention the woman is taught to be submissive and the guy is meant to be dominant. Everyone is trying to have a narrative that doesnt exist and they feel that that are supposed to happen. I feel like they feel that that are supposed to happen. Ifeel like if they feel that that are supposed to happen. I feel like if porn they feel that that are supposed to happen. Ifeel like if porn played a part and they show us how sex should happen and it included a lot of consent then i think it would be better. That debate this morning from the Victoria Derbyshire programme following out Research Carried out by bbc radio five live. The headlines on bbc news. A leading Economic Research group says Spending Plans for both the conservatives and labour dont add up, accusing them of presenting numbers that are not credible. Net migration falls to its lowest level for nearly 6 years driven by fewer people entering the country from the eu for work. Tensions escalate between china and the us after President Trump signs a bill supporting hong kongs pro democracy protesters. Throughout this Election Campaign weve been reporting from some key Battle Ground constituencies. This afternoon Martine Croxall will be live in cheltenham. Our correspondentjon kay has been speaking to voters there and found housing could be a deciding factor. The gloucestershire town was won by the conservatives in 2015 and 2017, but it voted to remain in the eu and is at the very top of the lib dems hit list for this election. Im ina im in a council ward im in a councilward in im in a council ward in the west of town and we are focusing on housing. There is a real lack of Affordable Housing in this area even though this is the biggest area of social housing in the whole of gloucestershire. 3500 homes. Still real concerns that not enough people, particularly younger people can get access to the housing they need. There is a plan to build more homes, around 1000 new homes, not farfrom here, homes, around 1000 new homes, not far from here, next homes, around 1000 new homes, not farfrom here, next to homes, around 1000 new homes, not far from here, next to a homes, around 1000 new homes, not farfrom here, next to a new homes, around 1000 new homes, not far from here, next to a new cyber park next to the government surveillance hub, gchq, but that is still yea rs surveillance hub, gchq, but that is still years away. Lets find out more with the policy laid at the National Housing federation. Thank you very much for coming here today. Tell me what kind of housing cheltenham in particular needs and how much . There is a real shortage of Affordable Housing in cheltenham and across the country. In the south west we know that we built about 4000 social and Affordable Homes but we need about 15,000 so more than three times as many each year for at least another decade. Across the country it is a similar picture. We need 45,000 social and Affordable Homes each year to meet Housing Needs and to do that Housing Associations and local authorities can fund a lot about themselves but we also need substantial investment which is why we are asking the next government to invest in building the social housing we need. We have had a snapshot today saying that house prices are sluggish, growing less than 1 every month in the last year. Surely that is good news for people that want to get onto the housing ladder who dont have a huge amount of money to spend. In cheltenham the average house price at the moment is ten times the average salary. If you want a mortgage on the average house you need a salary of around £57,000. We think its really important to build lot more Affordable Housing for ownership as well as for rent to really help meet the need and solve the housing crisis. Many people say there is plenty of construction going on near them and they see new estates going up but when the houses are put on the market they are simply not affordable. Do you think the rules need to change about the proportion of social housing being built . Yes, we think we need to up the portion of social housing being built. Hundred 45,000 of the homes built. Hundred 45,000 of the homes built need to be social housing. It is also about funding which is why the funding is so important and we are asking the next government to commit to that. It is also about other things such as land, making sure public land is available for social housing. We know public support for housing is much higher in the area if it is affordable for local people so it is really important that it is built as part of the bid of elements. Thank you for talking us through those issues. Another factor that people say is you need the infrastructure and the Community Hubs support all of that new housing. Here we certainly have that with the Community Centre next toa that with the Community Centre next to a college next to a sports centre. Inside there is a doctors surgery and cafe. We will go back in there later to talk to some other people about their concerns and what they think the priority should be for the next election. British scientists are creating a blueprint for bands and pop stars to continue to perform live music without contributing to Climate Change. The Tyndall Centre for Climate Change research is using tour data donated by the group massive attack after the band said they wanted to help find solutions to the climate crisis. Heres our environment reporter laura foster . Teardrop on the fire. Fearless on my breath. Since they broke out onto the global music scene in the 90s, massive attack have sold millions of albums and toured the world. But after spending time with the Environmental Campaign group extinction rebellion, they have become more aware of the damage that live music can cause the planet. They could have decided to never tour again, but instead wanted to help solve the problem by teaming up with scientists who will look at every aspect of their tour and help them reduce their Carbon Emissions to zero, or as close to zero as possible. Whenever a celebrity, if you like, dares to say they want to system change to tackle Climate Change, people often line up to say this is very hypocritical because they are part of a very high carbon sector. And what is really exciting about this project is saying, well, yeah, it is a high carbon sector and we need to try and tackle that. Because every sector has to be part of the transition to a low carbon economy. I hear jerusalem bells are ringing. Its not the first time musicians have spoken out about this issue. Last week, coldplay announced it was why they wouldnt go on tour with their latest album. My missionaries in a foreign field. Duh. And fans of Billie Eilish can earn free concert tickets by fighting Climate Change. Really hurt me, baby. Really cut me, baby. How can you have a day without a night . Given fans tend to idolise their favourite bands and artists, it is hoped that if more musicians are seen to be acting sustainably, it will encourage more of us to do the same. Laura foster, bbc news. I love that song. Now its time for a look at the weather with helen willets. Good afternoon. There is lingering rain, particularly for england and wales this afternoon. We are seeing brighter skies filtering down from the north with the sunnier skies. Drier weather is in the outlook but it will feel much colder. Let me explain why. The low pressure and its attendant weather front i moving southwards to allow this northerly wind and a ridge of High Pressure to move in across the uk. Always low pressure close by to the southwest. But for most of us, it is a drier outlook. However, we still have a handful of flood warnings out at the moment. More details on the website. As you can see, we still have some more rain to come over the next few hours. It is clearing Northern Ireland. It will clear Northern England. But this rain slowly meandering its way south. We have had drier weather over the but here we will see rain arriving this evening and overnight. It is here where we have relatively mild weather. Still already we are seeing that dip in temperature further north. Add on the wind and it feels even chillier still. But of course the sunshine helps. Now, because we have had all of that hot weather and temperatures will plummet overnight, there is the chance of some ice, just about anywhere, really, particularly as the showers continue in northern and eastern areas. And it will be raining until quite late in Northern Ireland as well. You can see that frost is widespread really from the midlands, northwards over night. A much colder start to our friday morning rush. Ice obviously a concern. Wintry showers over the hills of scotland. At relatively low levels if we do see some showers. Coming into the North York Moors, for example, even the lincolnshire wolds, they could be a little bit of wintriness there as well. Temperatures will be three orfour celsius down. Probably just about hanging on to the cloudy skies and that mild weather further south and west. Feeling quite grey and cold in that wind. Tomorrow night, and even more widespread frost. Temperatures even in some of the bigger towns and cities dropping two or three degrees below freezing. It will be a freezing cold start saturday morning. And then with a ridge of High Pressure, there will be a lot of fine and settled weather. This is the fly in the ointment. This will bring the risk of some rain and some raw winds as well into southern and western parts of both england and wales. There could be some heavy rain. They could be a smattering of wintry weather over the hills as well. There could be some wintry showers for the east coast of england and scotland. But by and largely, it is a much drier picture. Eventually, we pick up milder air into the north west and more into next week. There is more online. Hello, youre watching afternoon live. Im simon mccoy. Today at 2pm.
