If anybody is done for islamophobia orany if anybody is done for islamophobia or any form of discrimination in the conservative party, they are out first ounce. First bounce. A Bleak Outlook on Climate Change. The United Nations says the world has to act much faster to avoid Dangerous Levels of global warming. And a remarkable comeback from 2 0 down by spurs, as they book their place in the Champions League knockout stages. And at 11 30pm, we will be taking an in depth look at the papers with our reviewers, mo hussein and rachel shabi. Stay with us for that. Jeremy corbyn has repeatedly declined to apologise to the uks Jewish Community over anti semitism, despite sharp criticism of him by the chief rabbi. Instead, he insisted a Labour Government would make society safe for people of all faiths. In a newspaper article, rabbi Ephraim Mirvis said labours claim it had investigated all cases of anti jewish racism in its ranks was a mendacious fiction. He urged people to vote with their consciences in next months general election. The conservative party also came under heavy criticism today when the Muslim Council of britain accused it of denial, dismissal and deceit on the issue of islamophobia. Our Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg reports. Anti zionism is entirely different from anti semitism. Why, why . this argument has been raging for more than three years, and it burst into the Election Campaign today. Chanting 0h, Jeremy Corbyn sinceJeremy Corbyn has been in charge, there have been constant accusations that labour has allowed racism againstjews to creep in. Mr corbyn, are you fit for high office, sir . Right in the middle of this contest, he is right back in the middle of it. A leader of one of the countrys main religions actually warning against a vote for labour. Writing in the times the chief rabbi says jews have watched. Claims they are doing everything they can to crack down on it are a mendacious fiction, he says, and labours handling of the issue is incompatible with the British Values of which we are so proud. The chief rabbi suggests a new poison, sanctioned from the very top, has taken root. With extraordinary timing, Jeremy Corbyn was always due to attend labours race and faith manifesto today. Choir sings. An hour later than planned, he took to the stage, repeating that he abhors racism in any form. There is no place whatsoever for anti semitism in any shape orform, or in any place whatsoever, in modern britain. And, under a Labour Government, it will not be tolerated in any form whatsoever. I want to make that clear. Cheering and applause. You nazi apologist his critics arent sure he has been clear enough, though, in the last few years. There was trouble from his old ally, ken livingstone, his remarks about hitler. Some ofJeremy Corbyns own past comments and associations have raised eyebrows, too, and anti semitic abuse in the labour party led to two jewish female mps leaving. Labour says firmly they are making a huge effort to get to grips with the problem, but rabbijonathan romain believes there is real anxiety among theJewish Community. For the first time, jews have been looking over their shoulders. Its just something were not used to. Im born in britain, im a british citizen, you know, britain is my home, my values. Never has a party made me feel different. In exchanges with the Bbcs Andrew Neil tonight, though, Jeremy Corbyn was resolute in his approach, refused to say sorry. Wouldnt you like to take this opportunity tonight to apologise to the british Jewish Community for whats happened . What ill say is this. I am determined that our society will be safe for people of all faiths. I dont want anyone to be feeling insecure in our society, and our government will protect every community. So no apology . Against the abuse they receive, on the streets, on the trains or in any. So no apology for how you handled this . Orin any other form of life. Ill try one more time. No apology . Hang on a minute, andrew. Can i explain what were trying to do . You have, and youve been given plenty of time to do it. I asked you if you wanted to apologise, and you havent. Andrew, i dont want anyone to go through what anyone has gone through. And youve said that several times. I understand that, mr corbyn. I was asking you about an apology. The tories are happy to condemn labours position in this campaign, but have their own problems with islamophobia. Accused today of turning a blind eye and being in denial. Were having an inquiry into all forms of prejudice. No, youre having a broad inquiry, but not one into the specific allegations of islamophobia. Because if anybodys convicted, if anybody is done for islamophobia, or indeed any prejudice or discrimination in the conservative party, they are out first bounce. The Muslim Council says the tories approach simply is not good enough. The conservative party has a very specific problem with islamophobia, be that among councillors or Party Members, or mps, or even the prime minister. It needs to recognise this specific problem. The liberal democrat leader said the chief rabbis warning could not be ignored. We should take very seriously the concerns of a Community Within our country that is genuinely feeling unsafe, and think about what that says about our politics, that that is because of the actions of a leader of a mainstream party. Reporter why do you think the chief rabbi thinks youre not fit for office . The labour leader has long said he is doing everything he can. There is little sign, though, this ugly moment in our politics is anywhere near at an end. Lets speak now to our Political Correspondent nick eardley, who joins us live from westminster. Nick, it has been really striking to see so many nick, it has been really striking to see so many different faith groups come out today. We have had hindu and sikh groups also making state m e nts and sikh groups also making statements this evening. Do you think that this is going to change peoples mines, either the state m e nts peoples mines, either the statements orJeremy Corbyns interview tonight . Quite clearly the chief rabbi wanted to say to the Jewish Community today you need to think about whether or not you can vote labour. Now, that was his opinion, and we have heard it from others as well. We heard, as you say, a Hindu Council in the uk saying that they think the labour party has an anti hindu problem as well. The truth is, this is an issue that has plagued the labour party for upwards of three years now. Its not a new one, yet there is a feeling within theJewish Community that the labour leadership hasjust been unable to deal with it. If you ta ke been unable to deal with it. If you take the words of the chief rabbi used today, they are scathing. Saying that there had been an utter failure to deal with the issue, and a new poison had been allowed to ta ke a new poison had been allowed to take root in the labour party, with the acknowledgement of the leadership. So i dont think theres any doubt this will damageJeremy Corbyn, we just cant be sure of the extent of that. Obviously the conservatives have also faced criticism, again for some time, on the question of not dealing with islamophobia. We have had Boris Johnsons letterbox comments, and others which he obviously has a nswered others which he obviously has answered in his own way. Do you think voters will be left with a sense of, well, they are all as hopeless as each other on these questions . Well, look, it is certainly not a particularly positive day when both of the main parties are accused by different faith groups of having a problem with a particular religious group. As you say, the Muslim Council of britain didnt pack any punches either, when they were accusing the conservatives of having an islamophobia problem. Now, that was in response to what the chief rabbi said, and it wasnt one that they came forward with proactively in the same way the chief rabbi had, but look, there is no doubt that the mcb have real concerns about what is going on in the conservative party as well. They have been making those points for some time stop and again, it remains to be seen the impact that has on the conservative party, and whether muslim voters turn away oi and whether muslim voters turn away or not. As weve heard, the Muslim Council of britain strongly attacked the conservative party over what the it describes as denial, dismissal and deceit regarding islamophobia. The council said they agreed with the rabbi that voters should follow their conscience in decembers election. They accused the prime minister, borisjohnson, of having a blind spot for racism. But the conservative party has insisted it never tolerates any form of prejudice. Im joined now by miqdaad versi, spokesperson for the Muslim Council of britain. Thank you for coming into night. Thank you for coming into night. Thank you for having me. Boris johnson has said, we saw him in that package, that no form of racism will be tolerated. I think that would be a great sentiment were it one that he followed. The reality, u nfortu nately, he followed. The reality, unfortunately, is that even just in the last couple of weeks, we have had case after case where no action has been taken, whether it is a candidate who shares something from Tommy Robinson or whether it is an individual who shares in anti muslim tweet, and the conservative party hide the fact that this happened. And in fact, that person still becomes a candidate. Whether it is Boris Johnsons becomes a candidate. Whether it is borisjohnsons actions himself, he has employed in number ten someone who has called in anti muslim hate figure a hero. These things are really problematic. He promoted zac goldsmith, who ran the campaign for mayor of london, which was widely regarded as islamophobic. Mayor of london, which was widely regarded as islamophobiclj mayor of london, which was widely regarded as islamophobic. I am sure zacks goldsmith has and would deny that, as he is standing still for his seat. In terms of the islamophobia charge, is it the right thing to single out that, rather than just thing to single out that, rather thanjust a thing to single out that, rather than just a broad thing to single out that, rather thanjust a broad need thing to single out that, rather than just a broad need for equality for people of all backgrounds . You know, the question of racism that permeates not only political parties, but all parts of society still, it seems . Agreed, and i think there are real challenges for racism in society and islamophobia in society. But what we have noticed, u nfortu nately, society. But what we have noticed, unfortunately, is a specific couple of islamophobia in the conservative party. They have been hundreds of cases of individual members, counsellors, of voters within the party, and the leadership of the party, and the leadership of the party, all supporting these types of ideas. And this is really problematic. When you have the conservative party. Prime minister of the time seeming to dismissal of these things, not even acknowledging there is a problem, what other Muslim Community supposed to do when they see case after case being dismissed, when you have over 30 counsellors or former counsellors are found by the guardian and by lbc to have committed different forms of islamophobia . And no action taken, no transparency, no idea what is happening with these individuals. What are Muslim Community supposed to do . And i think whats really important is that we stand up and we say we want action stop we think it is very important the conservative party ta kes is very important the conservative party takes it seriously and doesnt pretend theres a zero tolerance policy, as Boris Johnson pretend theres a zero tolerance policy, as borisjohnson said last week, doesnt pretend that they are dealing with every form of wretchedness, and they would be out first bounce, as he said every form of prejudice. Are you saying that muslims should not vote for the conservative party . Is that with the muslim counsellor saying . That wasnt counsellors are non partisan organisation. We do not support any party or go against any party. All we think our issues matter. And we think islamophobia is a key issue. We have surveyed our communities, this is what has come out. Islamophobia really matters, and we highlighting that this is an issue that should be taken seriously, and those that it seriously should vote with their conscience, understand what that means for the Muslim Community, and make thatjudgement. But that implies that you are advising people not to vote for the conservative party. And yet we have had the chief rabbi saying that he doesnt support the labour party. Are you both saying that your constituency of followers should vote for the other . We do not say that you should or should not vote for the conservative party. We know very, very prominent muslims like baroness warsi, who are out campaigning for the conservative party despite this. Were not saying you should vote for one party or another. But do you think there is another. But do you think there is an equivalence going on in politics at the moment between the alleged problems facing labour and the conservatives on these issues . Do you think they are both equally bad and problematic . I dont think we can go into this ranking issue of saying this is bigger or that is bigger. All we can say is, according to polling, we know that a significant proportion of conservative Party Members have really hostile, islamophobic views. This is reality, that is what the polls say from hope not hate. This is what we have on paper. This is a serious problem, and it should be dismissed. It should be taken with the seriousness it deserves, with the seriousness it deserves, with the proportionality and the consistency that old incidences of racism need to be looked at. It is not about us saying were better than another group, or anything like that. It is about realising that racism is unacceptable, whether it on the right or on the left. In terms of what you actually think should happen now, first of all, do you think in the conservative party that there are specific things that they could do, or other parties . Of course. I think that when there is a serious problem of islamophobia within the party, they should listen to muslim communities. Unfortunately the conservative party and the government hasnt been engaging with any broad Muslim Community in this country. There is a real problem when it is a large proportion of our society, but listen to muslim communities. Here the concerns. And how much of this is coming from the top . 0bviously how much of this is coming from the top . Obviously we have seen Boris Johnson writing, you know, in pretty colourful terms in the past. There are Serious Problems right from the top. I mean, we have talked about the people who here has promoted in his cabinet, we know that there are issues that have happened during his premiership. We know the fact that he seems to have engaged with people like steve bannon in the past, apparently. These are real challenges that we cant dismiss, and recognise it goes right to the top, and people need to recognise that. And the party needs to change. There needs to be a fundamental change of this institutional and doctoral problem in the party, and it needs to change to listen to muslim communities, to change the policies towards muslim communities, to do an enquiry which is independent, not within the party, but actually independent, that looks at the real challenge of islamophobia specifically, which they face. What thank you very much indeed for coming in. Anybody yet to register to vote in next months general election has until midnight tonight. Government figures show nearly 3 Million People have applied to register in the past month, with more than a third of them under the age of 25. The headlines on bbc news the chief rabbi accuses Jeremy Corbyn of allowing anti semitism to poison the labour party, but the labour leader says all forms of racism are unacceptable. The conservative party has also been accused by the the Muslim Council of britain of failing to deal with islamophobia. A Bleak Outlook on Climate Change the United Nations says the world has to act much faster to avoid Dangerous Levels of global warming. Hundreds more families have come forward with potential cases of deaths and injury at a Maternity Department in shropshire. An investigation into what happened at the shrewsbury and Telford Hospital nhs trust is already looking at over 600 cases where newborn babies and mothers died or were left injured. 0ur Health Correspondent Dominic Hughes has been talking to some of the families affected. Just a few hours after these photos were taken in april 2016, Pippa Griffiths became seriously ill and died. An inquest found she could have survived had staff from the shrewsbury and Telford Hospital trust acted faster. The culture, the cover ups, the lies. And thats what ultimately caused our daughters death. For pippas parents, a leaked report into failings at the trust has been another reminder of the terrible events around their daughters death. Weve got to relive it over and over again. I mean, three and a half years now, and its. Its still. Were still in that place. Were just one case, as well. Yeah. Many more. And more parents arejoining kayleigh and colin griffiths. Ive been told that in the last week, at least 200 new families have come forward. Thats in addition to more than 600 cases dating back a0 years the inquiry team are already looking at. It worries me that lessons havent been learnt, and despite the fact so many of our clients have been told that lessons will be learned, policies will be put into place, its written in their investigation reports, and yet the same mistakes keep happening again and again. One of the most worrying aspects of this leaked report into events here at the shrewsbury and Telford Trust is the sense that weve been here before. So much of what happened has echoes of the scandal that engulfed the Morecambe Bay Maternity Unit, where mothers and babies also suffered avoidable deaths. And that raises disturbing questions about what might be happening elsewhere. An investigation in 2015, into the deaths of 11 babies and one mother at the Maternity Unit run by the Morecambe Bay trust, revealed what was described then as a lethal mix of failures over a nine year period. These are not two separate one offs. These point to underlying, systemic failure that might be widespread. The man who headed that inquiry now warns that more nhs trusts could risk repeating the same catastrophic mistakes. The notion that it could never happen here is one of the most dangerous ones that an nhs trust can have. The truth is, there are points of learning from all of these things that everybody should be looking at and learning from. And families are still living with the consequences of terrible failure. Chrissy didnt want to be identified, but her son was left with a brain injury after complications during birth. Babies now that have got brain injuries that are going to affect them for the rest of their life. Theyre not going to grow into the child and adult that they could have grown into. Its just not fair. They took that away from us. They took it away from parents, they took it away from me. I just think somebody needs to find out exactly whats going on and stop it. Families like the griffiths dont expect to hear from the Investigation Team until late next year, but with fresh cases still emerging, they may face a much longer wait. Dominic hughes, bbc news, shrewsbury. The Un Environment Agency says current targets to cut Carbon Emissions fall far short of whats required to prevent disastrous Climate Change. In its annual report it says global emissions need to fall by more than 7 every year over the next decade, and governments must act faster. Tonight we focus on the impact of rising temperatures on the state of zimbabwe, where serious drought is threatening both urban and rural life. The authorities there say water flow over the famous Victoria Falls has dropped sharply this year. The Bbcs Stephen Sackur has been to zimbabwe to see the effects and this is his report. When the Zambezi River is in full flow, you can see why the explorer David Livingstone called it a view for the angels. But look at the falls now. This is what southern africas prolonged drought means the volume of water is down by two thirds. Here we are at this viewpoint. Yes. Its called the Horseshoe Falls viewpoint, but theres no falls . Yes, steve. The change in the low falls, theyre becoming more frequent. Who knows . Maybe one year there will be no fall completely, no water. Two hours north of Victoria Falls is Hwange National park, a land dying of thirst. Hwange has the largest concentration of elephants in all of africa. I dont know if you can see but theres a group of elephants just over there. Now, each elephant needs about 300 kilograms of food a day. In a drought like this, and you can see how dry it is, that means theyre constantly on the move, in a desperate search for food. Drought is a killer. 200 elephants have starved to death in the last two months. Solar pumps stop water holes drying out, but in drought conditions, the elephant population here is unsustainable. Climate change is real. Trees are destroyed, the vegetation is lost those are the issues. Beyond the park boundary, subsistence farmers are also struggling to survive in a land dry as dust. Climate change is intensifying conflict between humans and wildlife. Graphic images show farmers trampled to death trying to defend their fields from elephants. Madeleines brother was one of them. Prolonged drought is also an urban crisis. Half a Million People live in sprawling mbare, in harare. This place simply isnt equipped to cope with an environmental crisis. Theyve had no piped water here for months. Cholera and typhoid are a looming threat. And look what happens at sunset. Zimbabwes Power Supplies have been crippled by a lack of hydropower and mbare is enveloped in darkness. Zimbabweans have endured years of misrule and economic collapse. Drought makes it even harder to see a way out. Yvonne, in the dark at night, when theres no power, theres no lights, do you and the kids feel safe here . No, we dont feel safe because some of the people are being robbed at night. There are thieves all over this community, so we dont feel safe if there is no electricity. Yvonne mgombe and nine family members huddle together by the light of a candle. Zimbabwes present is grim its future could be much worse. Stephen sackur, bbc news, harare. And you can see Stephen Sackurs reports from zimbabwe on the bbc iplayer. Demonstrators who object to Teaching Primary School children about relationships, including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender ones, have been permanently banned from protesting outside a school in birmingham. Campaigners had claimed that equality lessons at Anderton Park School in sparkhill promoted homosexuality which was against their islamic beliefs. The school and the city council welcomed the ruling. 0ur Midlands Correspondent sian lloyd sent this report from birmingham. This is a paedophilia agenda one of the protests held near Anderton Park School, this filming was used in evidence in the case. Demonstrations were held objecting to lessons teaching about lg bt relationships. The judge said what pupils were actually being taught was sometimes being grossly misrepresented. Videos made allegations against teachers, including that they brought convicted paedophiles into the school. Today thejudge said that wasnt true. The schools head welcomed the ruling that protests within the exclusion zone would now be permanently banned. You know, in a strange way im glad we were part of this. To be part of the decision which does affect all schools because it was always much bigger thanjust us. We all need to learn from this. Relationship education for Primary School pupils will be compulsory in england from september 2020. The way its being taught is being left to the discretion of head teachers. Immediately after the hearing, one of the lead protesters gave his reaction to the judgement. What they are being taught is that there is nothing wrong with this and that it is ok to be gay and it is ok to marry the same sex. Well, like it or not, we do not accept this and will not accept this. Tonight its known that protests cannot now take place directly outside these school gates. The judge found that teachers, pupils and local residents had been badly affected. But some objectors have vowed to continue outside the exclusion zone. Sian lloyd, bbc news, birmingham. And well be taking another in depth look at the papers with our reviewers mo hussein and rachel shabi. Thats all coming up after the headlines at 11 30pm.
