We talk to sir andy murray about his journey from a hospital bed. Back onto the court, as a new documentary puts him in reflective mood. That was the nice thing about these last six or seven months when i was at home, and my pain was gone. I got at home, and my pain was gone. I got a glimpse into what my life would be like without tennis and ims so much more relaxed about that now. I am so more relaxed about that now. I am so much more relaxed. Also coming up in the programme. As city get set for Champions League action sterling starts talk about a new contract. And the money is rolling into womens golf. Well have more on a big prize boost for the ladies european tour. Hello and welcome to sportsday. Hello and welcome along to the programme. Plenty to come on the Champions League with Manchester City and tottenham in action later but we start with this man here andy murray. Because most of us will have seen or have read the stories over the last two of years about his struggles with a hip injury. But now we have a real insight into just how tough that period was for him. A documentary called andy murray resurfacing premiered in london last night. And aside from the pain, we also get a little bit of his humour. Shane is my physiotherapist. Ive been working with him for about five 01 been working with him for about five or six years. He is probably the nicest man ive ever met hes never rude about anyone, but he worries about everything. We obviously enjoy winding him up about that 0oh some really great stuff in there. Ive been speaking to andy murray about the documentary last night was the first time he watched it all so i wonder how he felt about that. It was tough. At times, for me to watch. Yeah, iwas it was tough. At times, for me to watch. Yeah, i was in quite a difficult space, i guess, for 18 months or so for a majority of the film, really. That was why i didnt wa nt to film, really. That was why i didnt want to watch it beforehand. I knew that if i had done, i would, you know, im quite critical of myself. I dont like seeing myself on camera anyway. I would have said change that, or whatever. I anyway. I would have said change that, orwhatever. Ithink anyway. I would have said change that, or whatever. I think it went well. People seem to enjoy it but for me, it was a tough watch. I was pretty vulnerable for quite large parts of it. That was the thing, we got a real sense of that vulnerability. It was really raw, with you dealing with a tough couple of years. I wonder if you feel it has perhaps changed perceptions, perhaps of yourself . has perhaps changed perceptions, perhaps of yourself . I dont know exactly. It will have been the first time that anyone has seen me in that light, probably. I feel like time that anyone has seen me in that light, probably. Ifeel like me and my team. I dont know, it was pretty raw and honest. I hope that people appreciate that i was going through that difficult time, and when we started filming the documentary, i certainly did not expect it to end up how it did. We thought i would have my first operation, out of rehab for a few months and then be back on the court competing again. But it did not turn out that way. It turned into something quite different, where obviously it was quite emotional during it i was quite emotional. It looks like i was not able to play again. It was quite different to what we anticipated when we started but hopefully it makes a more interesting watch people will be able to watch it from friday. What do you think you learned about yourself over those 20 months or so . I think yourself over those 20 months or so . Ithinki yourself over those 20 months or so . I think i learned quite a lot. Especially in the last seven or eight months, i had the resurfacing operation. Just remembering what is happy and what your priorities are in life, and once i always thought that tennis was right up there as being one of the most important things for me. Actually, once i had the surgery and was pain free again and healthy, it totally changed me. I felt so and healthy, it totally changed me. Ifelt so much happier. Just in my day to day life, you know . The time i spent with my family was more enjoyable. I socialised with my friends, playing golf, day to day stuff. I wasnt able to appreciate that change for a while. 0bviously ive learned that my health is my priority and also i learned the reasons for why i do play tennis. Its not just about the winning reasons for why i do play tennis. Its notjust about the winning and losing. I started playing the sport when i was a kid because i loved it. That is why unbacked playing now. Because i really enjoy playing the sport and everything that goes into it. Sometimes, when you become a professional, that can sometimes get lost and everybody wants to know what your goals are, what the next competition you will try to win is and such and such. You lose joy of just playing the sport. There is a lot more pressure attached to it. Thats what i want to try and remember, when im back on the court competing. There was a lovely moment when you were in melbourne on the court with your team and you were talking about the great moments. Almost sitting back and realising that you were experiencing it through it. And you wonder, what is the future . If you dont have tennis, who are you . Its a big question for so many stars. Has this helps you prepare for the future more . It has, a lot. That was the one of the things i was a little scared about. What i would do when i do finish. When i finish playing, and tennis, being my whole adult life but also a huge part of my childhood too, that was what i had done since i was a young kid. When you get to 28 or 29 and it looks like you are coming to the end, i think sport doesnt do a very good job preparing athletes for finishing. Setting them up for what they will do when they finish. That was the nice thing about these last six or seven months when i was at home, and my pain was gone. I got a glimpse into what my life would be like without tennis, and im so much more relaxed about it. I know everything will be good when i do stop. It was really interesting in that final decision for the resurfacing operation. That it was not to play tennis but the quality of life. May be a process as well, we saw you trying loads of Different Things. You had the new trainer and you were break dancing. Did you experience more normal life, and Different Things because of it . Ido and Different Things because of it . I do feel i tried everything. To get back on the court competing, and try and get rid of my pain. I did everything that was asked of me from my team and the trainers. I did try the break dancing, which. It felt a lot better than it looked when i saw yesterday, i didnt realise how bad i was. But i definitely feel like now, once i came out, that the pain. Iwas like now, once i came out, that the pain. I was doing more stuff now. Like before, when i finish training, i would want to sit with my feet up because Walking Around and stuff was not comfortable. Now i want to go out and do stuff with my children and walk the dogs and play golf, and do other things that are enjoyable and make life more fun for everyone. Socialising with my friends, things like that before. Sitting at the dinner table you would have to get up dinner table you would have to get up and move around because your hip sta rts up and move around because your hip starts aching. Things like that, it was not as much fun. Im getting more enjoyment out of life now. Its great to hear that hes doing well now. Its a big night of Champions League football. And Manchester City have had a boost ahead of their home game against shakhtar donetsk, with the news that Raheem Sterlings in talks over a new contract. Theres coverage of the match on radio five live with our football correspondentjohn murray and former scotland winger pat nevin. Tottenham are also in action tonight, they will qualify for the knock out stages for a third successive season if they beat 0lympiakos. And, of course, there will be a new man in the dugout at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium asjose mourinho takes charge of his first home game. Natalie pirks is there for us, and natalie, jose couldnt really ask for a better first home game given that they could qualify tonight . Absolutely, they did very well at the weekend. Their first away win since january but you have this as your first since january but you have this as yourfirst home since january but you have this as your first home game, since january but you have this as yourfirst home game, you could not have asked for a better one. 0lympiakos with two shots on target in their last two away games in the Champions League and the last one against Bayern Munich but they didnt get a single one on target. Theyve only won once in 1a away games in the Champions League. Go back to september 2015 against arsenalfor back to september 2015 against arsenal for the last back to september 2015 against arsenalfor the last time back to september 2015 against arsenal for the last time they won. But he will be wary of the fact that spurs got off to a bad stuff in the chip starting the Champions League when they faced 0lympiakos in greece. 2 0 up and cruising. The greek side pulled it back to a 2 0 draw 2 2 draw. They will be wary of that that we fully expectjose mourinho to get off to a winning start at home. He has been speaking about how he wants the fans to transmit Incredible Energy from the stands and he wants to get it started, it has been mixed since he came on in terms of how they feel about him. He has always said in the last week what he can always promise is passion. They will give everything to bring happiness for those who love Tottenham Hotspur. Will he win the fans over . It remains to be seen. We will see that in the coming weeks and months but a win tonight will get them off to a fantastic win tonight will get them off to a fa ntastic start win tonight will get them off to a fantastic start at home. Natalie pirks, thank you. So, another Champions League night at Manchester City but i imagine that the supporters on the way to the ground tonight will be talking about the fat contract talks have been opened with raheem sterling. There will be a lot of talk about that . There will be a lot of talk about that . The fact that the contract talks have opened up. When he came here, i thought he was a good player. World class . Im not sure he could ever be that. He has improved consistently year on year but the major parts of his game, the creation and goal scoring has been amazing. Hes one of those people who has learned most under Pep Guardiola and he understands that. The fact he can stay is massively important. Probably more so that these fans get the guy that they know. He has the biggest and best years of his career ahead of him. Great news if he does manage to sign it eventually. It was only a year since he signed his last contract but i feel that he has improved dramatically in the last year. Therefore, there are one or two bigger clues to be warded off . Each time he gets there, you think it will slope off but it never seems to. Do it now as soon you can. If you leave it a year, it could be problematic. We will have the commentary, city need one point to get through to the knockout stage. Staying with football, and the chairman of rangers dave king is to step down at the end of the season. Hes been in the role forfour and a half years, and was one of the leading figures in the take over of the club in 2015. Our sports news correspondent is chris mclaughlin. Well, a miserable day here on the south side of glasgow. But a momentous day for ranges. We have witnessed quite a few of those over the years. Why does chairman dave king need to stand down . He feels hisjob yet
