But it smashed twice today we want to know, whats your most embarassing moment at work . Let us know just use the hashtag bbcworklife. Samanthi and i have a future tell you about samanthi and i have a few to tell you about. Hello and welcome to worklife. We start with the social Media Companies and the controversy over their role in political debate. Critics have accused them of allowing the spread of misinformation and even distorting democracy itself. In response, from today twitter officially stops taking all political advertising as the uk prepares for a general election next month, and the us gears up for its president ial poll in 2020. When he announced the decision to drop political ads, twitter boss jack dorsey said that political message reach should be earned, not bought, and called for more regulation of political advertising. But there has been criticism that the ban is unnecessarily severe, simplistic and hard to enforce. Earlier this week google which also owns youtube announced its own crackdown. It will stop political advertisers from targeting voters based on data about their supposed political affiliations and also tighten a ban on false claims. They will still be able to target users by age and location. But facebook which also owns instagram and whatsapp and is arguably the most influential of them all is refusing to restrict political advertising. Boss Mark Zuckerberg says the firm must stand for free expression. And it has announced it wont fact check advertising from political campaigns. Angus mclean, director of digital at the Media Consultancy ebiquity is with me now. Thank you forjoining us. Tell me, how will this work in practice . The devil is in the details, twitter kicks it off, banning all this advertising in the uk, google has announced changes coming from next month, and i suppose with the uk election round the corner we are a bit of a guinea pig as to whether this will work effectively. How will it work . How will they implemented . It seems like a huge task was macular micro it is, i think many people are probably working on the details. Their chain to restrict people from using paid advertising on twitter, other platforms have limited the targeting options, essentially saying you could no longer use a scalpel but a bit more ofa longer use a scalpel but a bit more of a blunt weapon, you can target by age, gender and postcode options. I was outlining, the Different Social Media that forms have different approaches. Is it because it could not make a difference to many companies, but to facebook, it could . When you look at the spending on political adverts, it is only a small portion of the pie. They make most of their money from large advertisers. I think in 2018, on google, looking Dutch Campaign 12 million p in advertising, when you compare that to political adverts, around 130 million, it is small fry, but i suppose that is powerful, they make the rules and can make a hard time for people at these companies. Is there an argument for why deregulation rather than Companies Self regulating . Deregulation rather than Companies Selfregulating . It is always difficult, regulation is good but ha rd to enforce. Difficult, regulation is good but hard to enforce. The tech sector, the Digital Advertising sector, moves at such a frantic pace i think regulators often struggle to keep up. Thank you so much forjoining us, angus mclean. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news. The chinese president , xijinping, has said china is keen to reach an initial trade agreement with the United States but that it is not afraid to fight back when necessary in their trade war. A us lawyer has been found guilty of Money Laundering and fraud for his role in the onecoin cryptocurrency scam. Mark scott was accused of helping the co founder of the Digital Currency dr Ruja Ignatova to use offshore banks and shell corporations to hide millions of dollars of investor money. The disappearance of dr ignatova has been the subject of the bbc podcast the missing crypto queen. Samira hussain reports from new york. Investors worldwide were led to believe that onecoin was a legitimate Digital Currency being run out of bulgaria. Prosecutors in new york said it was actually a ponzi scheme that attracted billions of dollars from investors around the world, but has no realfinancial value. Its founder, dr Ruja Ignatova, has not been seen or heard from since 2017. Jurors in a new York Federal Court only took a few hours to decide that mark scott was guilty of helping ignatova to funnel 400 million away from investors and into her private accounts and that of her associates. In his defence, mr scotts lawyers argued that their client had no idea that onecoin was worthless. Interesting story, and a great podcast. Time now for our daily look at some of the newspaper and website stories which have caught our eye. Joining me is riaz kanani, co founder of markering firm, radiate b2b. Welcome to the programme. You had talked about this story to us earlier, it is about google. It has been running into dated fears over its fitbit deal. Politicians and privacy campaigners have apparently called for the deal to be blocked, what are they worried about . Fitbit has been a leader in the wearable space for quite some time, they had Something Like 27 million pieces of information. Everybody around the world is obviously very worried about what people are doing with data, and google getting access to that could obviously lead to becoming a monopoly on health data, which would give it a undue power, should we say . Google have defended themselves, saying they will never sell personal information to anyone, but many people are not convinced because google has run into issues about data and violating privacy laws . About data and violating privacy laws . Absolutely true. I would say google is on the back foot when it comes to privacy, in the same way that facebook over the last couple of years has been hit hard. In the us especially, i think we are seeing increased efforts to push back on what Tech Companies are doing with alligator. These Tech Companies have oui alligator. These Tech Companies have our data anyway, you have google assista nt, our data anyway, you have google assistant, alexa, even just our data anyway, you have google assistant, alexa, evenjust googling things. What makes health data so much more interesting . things. What makes health data so much more interesting . I think with fitbit, what you are able to do is interpret the data to understand lifestyle and to understand things about a person that you would not normally have access to, and that can mean your privacy gets invaded. In the uk we have much stronger data laws which obviously manage what companies can do in terms of selling 01 companies can do in terms of selling or accessing health data. When it comes to what is possible, i think we are still not there as to what people will be able to do. We are still not there as to what people will be able to dolj we are still not there as to what people will be able to do. I have the scales but not the watch, do you . No. And you do . they will know all about you tomorrow and this is all about you tomorrow and this is a story about a var exclusive game, half life alex. A story about a var exclusive game, halflife alex. It is Virtual Reality. Half life has been rated one of the best games history over the history of gaming, it is the grandfather of shooting games today, and it has gone over a decade without a sequel, which in the days of sequels every other day, sort of thing, its very unusual. There is a lot of hype around what the next version will be like, they have made it the exclusive, so the only way to play this is if you have a Virtual Reality headset. So you will wear the headset and not be engaged at all in life . I take it you are a gaming fan . When i was younger i used to have time to play games, less so today. Does mrs kanani have an opinion on this . she does not like me playing as many games thank you forjoining us. Still to come are you tired with following the same path at work . Not sure about that. Do you need a change . Well be talking to a leading expert about how you can adapt your business and stay focused. Youre with worklife from bbc news. With polls opening in less than three weeks away, were continuing our tour of the country to look at the issues facing businesses this election. Victoria fritz is at one of the uks biggest Scientific Research parks in norwich. Hello and welcome to the speed breeding greenhouse. Now, ordinarily a farmer gets one shot at Something Like this, growing wheat, and, you know, its a big, big gamble. Youve got lots of things to consider, things like the weather, pests and diseases. Well, what about if you were able to get six crops through in one time . Now, this is a sort of greenhouse that allows things like that to happen. Theyve got a different variety of light in here, and it means that you can get more crops through. Its all about increasing crop yields, and its looking at trying to solve major problems like how to feed a growing world population, things like increasing crop yields, improving disease resistance and also reducing the costs to farmers. Now, someone who knows an awful lot about how to do this is someone who did their phd here, dr belinda clark. Now, you are in charge of agro tech east, which is a representational body for the whole of this area. Why is agro tech so important to the uk . Well, economically, we know that we have to increase productivity, we have to reduce the Environmental Impact of agriculture and the technology has a huge opportunity to address all of those challenges. So the chance to be able to monitor soils, monitor the environment, help the plants be more productive, manage disease better, really presents a great opportunity for farmers. What do you want to see from this election . We need to keep the Research Pipeline full, so places like thejohn innes centre need to be able to carry on generating that fundamental knowledge, but we need to be able to capture the value of that knowledge in our businesses and to be able to generate that return on investment and generate business impact. 0k. Thanks very much, dr clarke. Well, theres an awful lot to think about here. Britain really does punch above its weight when it comes to agriculture, manufacturing and also things like this, hi tech research. Now, in order for that to continue and for the pipelines to remain open, politicians need to pledge more in terms of investment, in terms of security. This is what the businesses here in norwich want to hear. Victoria does love a bit of gardening. She has a gorgeous garden. Victoria fritz is very green fingered. More on that story and all of the output from norwich on the bbc news website, and lots more on other business stories in the coming few weeks. Youre watching worklife. A reminder of our top story twitter bans political ads on its platform. The company says its necessary to help safeguard democracy. But facebook refuses to follow suit, and warns the move threatens freedom of expression. Sorry, samantha no, it was your turn, my fault were often told that change is necessary in order to adapt to evolving circumstances and tastes. Were even told that change can be good for us but how many of us are actually any good at it . This is especially true if you run a business. I terrible a change, i like things to stay the same. I live in the same area i grew up in, i do same food, my friends are my childhood friends. Iam my friends are my childhood friends. I am basically boring. This is especially true if you read a business. From the use of the latest technology or business model, to the best way to motivate employees there are many changes that can be tough to get used to. Our next guest knows a lot about how to embrace change. Wayne clarke, Founding Partner at the Global Growth institute is with us now. Welcome, thank you for coming in. What do you do and how is it different to other businesses and organisations that help businesses evolve and grow . We which can it in anthropological approach, we study and learn from what best practice looks like and organisations. In every organisation we work with, which is about 700 companies in about 30 countries around the world, we have found that in every organisation you always have a pocket of best practice, people doing the right things in the right way, performance seems to be better. The challenge for organisations as they dont often learn from what great looks like. But who decides the right way and the right path . Businesses are so the right way and the right path . Businesses are so different and their needs are so different . Yes, but we have human beings in most organisations, we are not robots. With humans, around the world, there are cultural variances but essentially people want the same things. Most people want to feel they have a decent manager, they are fairly paid, their well being is looked after, they have opportunities to develop. Looked after, they have opportunities to developlj looked after, they have opportunities to develop. I dont know what you are talking about what is your key bit of advice and does it vary with Different Companies or is it a one stop, this is how you get better productivity from your employees . What is your key message . Eloquent zero in on the role of the manager, they seem to have the biggest impact on day to day experience at work. Have the biggest impact on daytoday experience at work. There isa daytoday experience at work. There is a whole series of experiences, how you are greeted, the quality of the team briefing, the one to one, how you are left feeling on a friday, if you work monday to friday, if you work monday to friday, they are heavily dictated by a manager. You could work for the best company on the planet and have an awful manager, it will be an awful company. You could work for the Worst Company in the world but have an awesome line manager and work will be enjoyable. In china does not necessarily equal productivity, but it is important. What advice would you give to someone, what advice would you give to someone, lets say at the bbc, who wa nts someone, lets say at the bbc, who wants advice on managing people . You truly care about getting the best from someone and you care about them. We have organisations we work with who specifically go after that attribute of the individual if they are to be a people manager. But caring is not normally synonymous with being a good manager. Howd you differentiate between making progress, making money, but also making sure there is Pastoral Care . We have private Equity Companies who approach is because they know in order to drive growth of the organisations they buy, there is something about the care principle. When you talk to a hardcore financial expert, the whole idea of caring does not sound business, solid and strong, but the extent to which employees feel careful cared for does drive that. There was properly no Pastoral Care when we all properly no Pastoral Care when we a ll started properly no Pastoral Care when we all started working, Mental Health of employees was not an issue, now organisations recognise it has to be a priority . Absolutely. The Mental Health agenda is huge, i dont know if it is necessarily different than 30 or a0 years ago but it is more open and people are talking more. I also lecture at universities in my free time, i like doing that, in universities there has been a big shift in what people are looking for from employers. I lectured at a university in london yesterday, when you talk to the guys about what they want, it is a big thing where i can express , want, it is a big thing where i can express, where i feel free and looked after. You are working with huge organisations like the un, when they have thousands of employees and people who work together, how do you begin to explain and advise how they can treat people with different wa nts, can treat people with different wants, needs and jobs . There is no one overarching culture, you have cultures and cultures and cultures. When you look at a large, complex organisation, you may as well the plasil and look at london, a collection of villages and subcultures. You need to focus on what seems to be consistent that might drive performance for the organisation. We need to look at what works and replicate that. Do you think the happier the workforce, the more productive . Happiness is probably overused but i think there is something more than happiness. Probably overused but i think there is something more than happinesslj will do my thank you again, you were determined to get that last question thank you very much, wayne. Hopefully managers and buses will have taken some very good advice from that. In a moment well run through some viewer responses to our twitter question. That is about embarrassing moments at work. But first, its friday and time for another one of aarons Million Dollar ideas. The question is, can aaron keep still long enough to tell us about it . I cant get my words out but the a nswer i cant get my words out but the answer is no hey yeah it is the trampoline yeah, they have been making kangaroos of since the 1930s back then a gymnast from iowa was looking for something to launch himself into a backward somersault. So he took some scrap metal and rubber and lashed together and call it a bouncing rig. He set up a company to make them and travelled the world to sell them. When he was in mexico, he came up with the name trampoline, from a spanish word which means springboard. Trampolining took off in the 1950s andjump springboard. Trampolining took off in the 1950s and jump centres spread all across america. But the inventor started getting hit with lawsuits, because kids kept falling off his trampolines and getting hurt. So george should up shop in 1989, swamped with legal costs. Nowadays, he they have all sorts of safety features like padding and we spent 380 million on them every year. It isa 380 million on them every year. It is a market that has really bounced back studio iwould is a market that has really bounced back studio i would love to use a trampoline, but after three children, i think not i am with you moving on swiftly, nobody needs to know at the top of the show, we asked you about embarrassing moments at work. This could be one of them this was because tesla boss elon musk was showing off his supposedly shatterproof windows on his brand new truck when this happened may be that was a little too hard 0h, may be that was a little too hard oh, man it didnt go through about so, no it is notjust meant to be shatterproof, it is meant to be bullet proof. Lets take a look at what youve been saying dan says, i once snagged my trouser leg on a nail which caused a big rip all the way up exposing my whole leg. I was in front of my colleagues and boss at the time. Was it just was itjust your was it just your leg . was itjust your leg . oh, dear, your main tax measure map matthew said falling a falling asleep during a shift leader peer meeting, although i had been at work since florian and the meeting was it 3pm. He fell off his chair. Mine is similar, i was on a night shift, i will not say where, my work was done soi will not say where, my work was done so i went into the buss office because he had a sofa, ifell asleep, the next thing i knew it was morning and the boss walked in. Mine isa morning and the boss walked in. Mine is a bus story as well, i was taking the mickey out of my buss voice and accent, this is an old job in an old place, the lift door opened and there he was, standing there did he hear . this was a long time ago, i was much younger and i was actually told of by the bus for wearing a skirt that was too short. Pulled daniels once came up to me in a letter, i put my hand out to open it for him and i said, thats magic he did not love. Pulled daniels once came up to me in a lift.
