For weeks, republicans oppose the idea that donald trump was deeply concerned about corruption in ukraine, but in his testimony, david holmes, a us diplomat based in kiev, challenge that nation as he accounted a loud conversation between the president and ambassador sondland, which suggested out the president s real ambition was to get president s real ambition was to get president zelensky to investigate the bidens. In particular, i asked if it was true that the president did not give an expert of about ukraine. Ambassador sondland confirmed that. I asked, why not. Ambassador sondland said at the president only cared about big stuff. I noted that there was big stuff. I noted that there was big stuff going on in ukraine, like a war with russia. Ambassador sondland med tactics that benefited the president , like the abiding investigation that giuliani was pushing to stop the daughter of a coal miner from County Durham who how coal miner from County Durham who now has dual citizenship through marriage was the other patient in the hot seat at the inquiry. Fiona hill served as trump, top adviser before she left this summer. With her testimony, she chastised lawmakers for sowing doubt on Russian Election interference. Some of you on this committee appear to believe that russia and savers do not conduct a campaign against our country. Is that perhaps, somehow, for some reason ukraine date. This isa for some reason ukraine date. This is a fictional narrative perpetrated and propagated by the Russian Security services themselves. Thats here from chris buckler, norfolk mid can correspond it. Chris, starting with fiona hill, talk us through what was the key points you took from her testimony. I think what has come across in both of these witnesses isjust the come across in both of these witnesses is just the frustration felt by us diplomats and officials about the way that some in the comp administration were pursuing their owfi administration were pursuing their own policies. That came across time and time again, what you had fiona hill speaking about her concerns that there were other people inside the whole conversation with ukraine. For example, rudy giuliani, Donald Trumps personal lawyers, and Gordon Sondland trying to establish relationships with members in saudi ukrainian government, trying to have conversations that i did not involve them. At times, there was that deep frustration. If you take a listen to this club, if youre hill was clear they were pursuing a different agenda. Fiona hill. They were pursuing a different agenda. Fiona hill. Because he was being involved in a domestic political airing, and we would have been involved in National Security foreign policy, and those two things had just diverged. There was also a lot of focus on what david holmes had to say, he kind of filled out this idea of whether the president was truly focused on corruption in ukraine or whether he was more interested in this investigation into the bidens . Of course, that was this domestic political airing may shouldnt. This idea that you have diplomats and officials involved in the business of trying to secure relationships with ukraine, trying to ensure that Good Relationship between ukraine and america were maintained. Those intros were looked upon, as opposed to others who were involved in the administration, who are trying to pursue political interest for a President Trump, trying to get this investigation into his political rivals, including joe biden and his son hunter, who had business dealings in the country. When you listen to fiona hill, she was frustrated with this idea that some conspiracy theories we re idea that some conspiracy theories were being pushed, for example, she said, time and time again speaking directly to some members of the congressional committee, that they had been fishing ideas of perhaps ukraine being involved in election meddling in 2016, ratherthan russia. She said that was a fictional narrative that essentially needed to stop. That was a message to republicans on President Trump. Certainly, with david holmes, there we re certainly, with david holmes, there were moments when he talked in real detail and colour about conversations with ambassador sondland, particularly that moment when the phone call came from President Trump to ambassador sondland, which he over here to sitting beside him. Ithink it sondland, which he over here to sitting beside him. I think it came across much more evocatively on the television, this idea that any person you had some that they are talking about what was being said, and then afterwards, describing ambassador sondland that President Trump was only interested in the big stuff. By that, he did not mean ukraine and what was happening with russia, instead, he regarded the big stuff as being an investigation into the bidens and those domestic political interest. You have to say that a lot of this testimony has really helped the democratic suggestion that there were impeachable offences, but the republicans in question of them, and they are really pushing back. Donald trump has been tweeting today, questioning how it is possible to have such a good hearing, to be able to listen and overhear a conversation. Among the key figures who have emerge in the hearings is nancy pelosi, speaker of the house. Her announcement that had inquiry will take place set in place the hearings we are now witnessing the stop she has frequently sparred with the president. A few people knew madam speaker are better than her daughter, she is chair of the caucus of the Californian Democratic Party and also the offer of a new book, the nancy pelosi wife is that she joins us now from san francisco. Can we start by playing a moment between your mother and President Trump right after the midterms when the democrats had won back control, this is what happened. We are going to have a good discussion, and we will see what happens. Mr president , please dont characterise the strength that i bring to this meeting as the leader of the house democrats. What is that moment tell us democrats. What is that moment tell us about your mother . What that tells us about nancy pelosi is that she does not suffer fools gladly, she does not suffer fools gladly, she knows how to power, and she knows that she is there in the white house, not as an individual, but as the leader of a coequal branch of the leader of a coequal branch of the United States government, the congress of the United States, and she will not be tucked over, insulted by donald trump or any president , republican or democratic. Im interested to know how she deals with the pressure, she gets an offer little pushback, nudges from the president , but from his supporters, a lot of glum, well, it is fair to say, hate her, dont they . How should you flat . One of the things i write about in the book as her advice to others, which is to remember that criticism and effectiveness go hand in hand, so you cannot let yourself absorb all the criticism or praise. What you need to do instead is focus on your call to service, your purpose, you need to get out there and help people. The only way to do that is when an election, and up by about being attacked, you can win by caring about the ideas health care, public education, integrity and that is exactly what she set out today. Anytime you come help with a complaint, you wont believe the things that you are saying about you on twitter, she will say to us, dont agonise, organise. We cant complain about being insulted, or we can get out there and organise people in a positive way. I do not know how she does it, honestly, but i try to explain it some in the book. She religious keeps on task and purpose and insist that all of us and purpose and insist that all of us who supported do the same. To that point, always fighting, i want to play you another clip if you think a woman cannot keep tom, nancy pelosi does it every single day. Think a woman cannot keep tom, nancy pelosi does it every single daylj love that not everyone, even in her own party, is on the board. There is not well publicised ofjudah she has had with the squad. Listen, if we all agreed with each other, only one person would have to go to congress, and then we would have a 100 k. Perhaps that is not a suggestion they should be making right now given what is happening over there. The Democratic Party is a very big family. The only things i talk about in the book is how my parents raised five kids in six years from diapers to degrees with a lot of discipline, a lot of love, a lot of multitasking and a lot of humour, and have the ability to make everyday a new day. You have to be able to fight and disagree, but also, come together as a family. I went, is still the Democratic Party, we are a raucous thatis Democratic Party, we are a raucous that isjust the Democratic Party, we are a raucous that is just the way it Democratic Party, we are a raucous that isjust the way it is. We have to celebrate our strength at being different from each other. As she always says, our diversity is our strength, our unity as our power. But it is that ever considered a wea kness but it is that ever considered a weakness when you are looking at an Election Year . It isnt because you are talking about bringing in a large group of people, 17 million doubts that she will need to win, for example, in 2020. They come from people across the spectrum geography, age, gender identity, race, creed, class, disability all of it. You have to be able to bring everybody together, and what nancy policy because the kaleidoscope of politics is not the three of us might agree on everything, we might agree on some things, the two women might agree on things that the amount doesnt, etc. That is ok, as long as, ultimately, the three of us decide we are going to be together around a common purpose. I think we are seeing that with the impeachment hearings, even at this week, whether or not we would agree with the particular device that some of these experts on russia and ukraine might give, lead by pattison congress, when it comes to what we should do with foreign aid, what we should all be able to agree on is that Public Servants do an essential role in our government, at that whistle blowers must always be protected. Lets look at President Trumps approval ratings, they are not significantly dent about the impeachment proceedings so far. I wonder if there is any doubt in your mind that it was the right thing to do, to go for impeachment. At the moment, it is certainly sucking oxygen and attention away from the democrat race. Which, presumably, you wont wa nt to race. Which, presumably, you wont want to see a lot more as the focal point of the political discussion at the moment. You will want to see. Today, a group of veterans came to capitol hill, she also met with some children who were survivors of gun violence will stop they are legislating, investigating and litigating all at the same time. As for the president s ratings, the first of all, it is a constitutional duty. If you see someone breaching their constitutional duty, you have 110 their constitutional duty, you have no choice but to investigate. Many people have left a report imparting and declared himself independent, so, the president s numbers among republicans are going to be extremely high because many people who disagree with him have left his party. When you look at what the conduct is of what the president has done, really, the question of what the president has done, really, the question for republicans is what it is president clinton was going through an impeachment investigation, which is, at one point, we have to go to him and say, look, we need to at least promote a censure of your behaviour. So, the republicans are now in that same boat, it would have to say to donald trump, if you do not want to be impeached, as you dont want to be the fourth president of the United States to ever be impeached, you have to at least allow for your party to send your your behaviour, and then move on into the elections injune 2020. I dont know if his ego will allow that, but that is a conversation that my friends who remain republicans are having among themselves. Thank you very much. That is an interesting place to end that interview. While the republicans not taking the lead in those congressional impeachment hearings, next week, thanksgiving, recess. Thoughts now presumably move to if this goes to trial in the senate, what then happens . And certainly, it is on the mind of one donaldj trump for some he has been having lunch, trying to break bread with some of his critics amongst the republican party. The reason that is significant is because, if as expected, impeachment proceedings proceed, ultimately, the senate will be the sort of trial and the senators will be the jury. He needs every vote on board. At the moment, the party is taking with him but two of the people at lunch today, senators mitt romney from utah and Susan Collins from maine, have been amongst those who have refused to denounce, unlike their colleagues, the impeachment proceedings. The fa ct the impeachment proceedings. The fact they have been invited to lunch is an assumption the president is going to try and win them over. Tells you a lot. Not take any chances. Turning to israel. Benjamin netanyahu chances. Turning to israel. Benjamin neta nyahu has chances. Turning to israel. Benjamin netanyahu has been indicted on charges. These really Prime Minister is alleged to have accepted gifts from wealthy businessmen in exchange for positive press coverage. Mr net yahoo denies any wrongdoing. 0ur correspondent Barbara Plett usher is injerusalem for us. Does he have to resign . No, he does not. This is uncharted water for israel. They have never had a sitting fry minister indicted. We will see how it plays out. According to the law, he does not have to step down while he is indicted. He can stay in hisjob up until the final verdict. As you know, there is a political crisis in israel at the moment. There was no government that has been able to form after two inconclusive elections. The more immediate question is, what will this indictment have, what impact will it have, on these attempts to try and form a government . Which really speaks to the point of the rifle who has been trying to form a government, has not been able to so far. Does this change the dynamic . It could. Were going to have to see what happens. If mr netanyahu has been indicted, and he has been indicted on all the counts. There been some thoughts that he might get some reduced charges but is the full thing. Whether his political allies, this parties with which he is allied, but also members of his own party, whether they will be assessed, whether they will see what he has as far as expiration date, i guess there may have been some questionable whether mr netanyahu himself would decide would step down or look for a plea bargain but he is very much. He has spoken, come out and say this is a coup detat against the Prime Minister with false allegations and a contaminated investigation system, so he is thrown out a challenge, where the attorney general has said he was just trying to do this to protect the institutions, protect the rule of law. Others have called for him to step down, he is making clear he is fighting on. Barbara, where is the israeli public on this . The is really public is polarised, as you can see from the result of the election. Those who support mr netanyahu election. Those who support mr neta nyahu are very election. Those who support mr netanyahu are very strongly behind him on this. He believed what he says about this being false news, about being a witch hunt and so on. He does have fairly broad support as Prime Minister in the sense of his record. They feel he has given him a decade of good economy, a security, and in that sense, they want to see him continue. But these legal problems that have hanging over him for the past few years have basically caused them to focus more and more on staying in power rather than in governing and he has lost support over that process. Another the indictments have come, we will see whether people rally behind him but i think many people just want a functioning country at this point. Barbara plett usher on that breaking news out ofjerusalem. Thank you very much indeed, just to recap, the Prime Minister of israel Benjamin NetanyahuPrime Minister of israel Benjamin Neta nyahu is facing Prime Minister of israel Benjamin Netanyahu is facing more legal difficulties, but at this stage does not have to step down. Lets move on to some of the other days news in brief. The parents of henry dunn have said they are discussing with dominic rabb with his defence of the governments position to get legal costs from them. The 19 year old died, which led to the suspect leaving the uk underage genetic community. His parents have begun legal challenges against the legal office the foreign office. Mr robin said the government needs to protect taxpayers money and that he would take normal action to defend themselves. Australias biggest city, sydney, has again been envelopes in a layer of toxic haze from bush fires burning nearby full firefighters are battling nearly 200 blazes across the country. The hot and dry weather showing no signs of letting up. In the south of the country, the australian state of victoria has issued a code red warning, the highest possible fire alert, for the first time in nearly alert, for the first time in nearly a decade. In the uk, the labour party has set out a radical general election manifesto. That is not my interpretation, that is the word the labour leader used to describe his offer to the electorate ahead of the vote which takes place three weeks from today. He said he partys plans offered real change. He said he is 20 buy back services the governments of the past few decades has been selling off. He is. Amongst other things. I accept the opposition of the billionaires. Because we will make those pay their fair share of tax. To help fund world Class Public Services for you. Thats real change. I accept the hostility of the bosses paying poverty pay, because we will give britain a pay rise, starting with a real living wage of at least £10 an hour, including for young workers. Thats real change. With us now is faisal islam, the bbcs economic editor. Why is it costing them so much . Because they are doing off a lot. It was self described two years ago as radical. This pushes that further on. 135 extra spending per year. That breaks down roughly speaking, about 83 billion in day to day, current spending, Government Departments and 55 billion at least on investment for the future. There seems to been encouragement in the idea, and you can see this around the world, that borrowing for governments are cheaper now. Might as well take advantage of that, invest in the future. The people are saying, can you really afford that . They say, we cant afford not to because we have got to deal with emergencies such as the climate crisis. That is the general picture. And if you introduced Spending Plans like these, do those Interest Rates in the bond markets now stay that low for a country . Its a brilliant question. Typically, we will take some thing like this would indeed definitely lead to raised rates in terms of borrowing. It is true to say, though, that there is a consensus say, though, that there is a consensus in World Markets and at the imf, and frankly in European Finance ministers, that you can borrow more than used to be able to. And indeed, all other parties are also going to borrow tens of billions or hundreds of billions and have deployed this precise argument. Labour have pushed this. There is a cliff edge at some point, but we dont exacting a where it is. That cliff edge has been pushed further away because of the way in which the markets have acted in the fact that Central Banks have Interest Rates really low, and so labour are taking the most risks here but argue there isa the most risks here but argue there is a basis for that because we have to invest notjust in Climate Change or against Climate Change but also to improve britains pour poverty performance. They are betting on Interest Rates are many levels to what about the wealthy, those who maybe look at this manifesto, it makes them nervous . What have if if they started moving that money overseas . Youre absolutely right. It is usually reliant, this, on a small number of rich herders, but also on businesses. And frankly, so much so that one doubts it is feasible to extract these levels of taxation on such a narrow base. When they are trying to do politically is rates all this extra tax to Fund Services that are popular but we can do this without affecting the ordinary worker. A number of people of question the credibility of that. You are right. There was an issue about the goose that lays the golden egg, but they feel, labour feel, that argument, taken on board by the Labour Government of tony blair in the 1980 and 2000, they say, that does not count any more. The 1980 and 2000, they say, that does not count any more. 19905 and does not count any more. 19905 and thousands. Taking does not count any more. 19905 and thousands. Taking control of the economy. Faisal islam, think you very much indeed. This is beyond 100 days from the bbc. Republican impeachment hearings are hot this week with the republicans are rejecting. The israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has been formally indicted for bribery, fraud and breach of trust. He is still insisting that he will continue to lead israel. Three months away from the iowa caucus, democratic president ial candidates took to the debate stage for the fifth time. You were the winners and losers . And, its only a rock and roll. But apparently it is bad for the environment. Coldplay put the lord taught plans on hold while they work out how to go green. Candidate seeking the democratic president ial nomination took to the debate stage for the fifth time on wednesday night. For the first time, candidates focus more on attacking President Trump than one another, while also showing a unified front on Climate Change and womens reproductive rights. There were moments of tension, especially in the final minutes, over matters of National Security, and pragmatic argument about electability. Lets face it, yesterdays big story was the impeachment hearing, and that is having all the candidates can agree on. We have a criminal living in at the white house, there is no question that in 2020, the biggest i55ue question that in 2020, the Biggest Issue before us is question that in 2020, the Biggest Issue before us i5ju5tice i5 question that in 2020, the Biggest Issue before us i5ju5tice is on the ballot. Should he be impeached, i 5hould ballot. Should he be impeached, i should to be thrown out of office . After he was thrown out of office or defeated, 5hould after he was thrown out of office or defeated, should he learn be prosecuted . For a criminal offence while he was president . That is our judgment to be made by an attorney general. Data last night live up to its billing . With me now isjoel payne who worked on Hillary Clinton was back in 2016 president ial campaign. Joe, if this is a horse race, was last night a photo finish, did anybody pull ahead . Im not sure if you guys are familiar with the 5how seinfeld, i dont know if you have ever watched it, but it kind of felt like a debate about nothing, kind of how 5ite felt like a debate about nothing, kind of how site out is a show about nothing. Yesterday was overshadowed by those impeachment hearings in washington, dc which carried over to the debate, which, by the way, it wa5 the debate, which, by the way, it was pretty unremarkable. There werent a lot of fireworks or disagreements between the candidates, i think it can probably be best described as a door for everybody. I read that somebody did a count of the attacks on each other, Pete Buttigieg, received about four attacks, may be, at most. That mean he is considered. He is this a front runner coming up in iowa. Does that mean the other candidates do not see him as a threat . I feels like each debate, each candidate has their turn in the hot seat. If you debate to go, it wa5 kamala harri5, hot seat. If you debate to go, it wa5 kamala harris, a couple of their bait5 before that, it was elizabeth warren, bernie sanders, joe biden have all had their chance in the hot 5eat. Pete buttigieg had his chance la 5t 5eat. Pete buttigieg had his chance last night. A5 you say, it was not as last night. A5 you say, it was not a5 ferocious a5 last night. A5 you say, it was not a5 ferocious as some of the attacks have been in the past, i think Pete Buttigieg handled himself pretty well. This is to be expected close to those primaries and caucu5e5, i think we will see the intensity only grow in the next few weeks. Pete buttigieg is number one in the polls for what its worth at this stage in iowa, but his support among African Americans is relatively limited, it is felt. The guy who says that he does have support amongst African Americans is joe does have support amongst African Americans isjoe biden, lets look at what happened to him last night when he talked about effect. At what happened to him last night when he talked about effectm at what happened to him last night when he talked about effect. If you notice, i have more people there supporting me in the black community because they know me, they know who lam. The because they know me, they know who i am. The former chairs of the black caucus, the only African American women to have been elected to the United States senate, a whole range of people. Thats not to laughter. Joe, you can either love it out or you can say, joe biden says the only. Is the sort of moment damaging . It is one of many cringeworthy moments for the former Vice President. About three quarters through the debate, if you are able to fit his watcher of political news yesterday in america, you are probably tapped out after about ten hours of coverage and about 17 minutes of that debate. Probably, the timing of the debate helped him. Im not sure that African American vote rs im not sure that African American voters at his back baying at his baseis voters at his back baying at his base is looking at at the moment, but it does add to a public narrative that is really challenging for the former Vice President. He struggles with mine, she struggles with how to deliver a point crisply. If you say that he is the strongest mcat to defeat donald trump, you have to be able to deliver those moments with out interruption, unlike how the former Vice President has been able to do so so far. The former mayor of new york, michael bloomberg, inching closer to properly throwing his hat in the ring. Short. I think properly throwing his hat in the ring. Short. Ithink another important piece of news is that he is about to spend 20 million registering voters, something that democrats do welcome. I think im entering the race along with the former massachusetts governor, deval patrick, it is going to have an impact. They will not be liable in those first early states, if you arent viable there, you really dont have a chance for the nomination. Thank you forjoining us. A lawyer representing some of Jeffrey Epsteins victim says that she hopes a prince and it will keep its word that he is willing to cooperate with ongoing investigations. Prince andrei. Leaving home in windsor this morning, seemingly as normal, Prince Andrew bound for Buckingham Palace and further meetings to reshape the next phase of his life. Arriving at the palace to offer her advice and support, his ex wife the duchess of york. Andrew wont now perform public engagements for the foreseeable future, but it is suggested he may still appear at trooping the colour, the annual celebration of his mothers birthday, though whether he will do so in the uniform of colonel of the grenadier guards is less clear. Similarly, its suggested hell still lay a wreath at the cenotaph on remembrance sunday. He is after all a former serving officer in the royal navy. Whats much clearer now is that its the core members of the royal family, those who appeared together on the palace balcony for the diamond jubilee, who represent the future. This episode has seen Prince Charles exercise his authority alongside the queen. They were the ones who decided that andrew had to step back before damage was done to the monarchy itself. There is an immediate question as to whether andrew will present himself for questioning by the us authorities about his friendship with the convicted sex offenderJeffrey Epstein. In his Statement Last night, andrew said, of course i am willing to help any appropriate Law Enforcement agency with their investigations if required. We do think its a good, positive step that he says hes going to cooperate with Law Enforcement, but wed like to see that happen. Is he going to, for example, fly to the United States and voluntarily meet with our fbi . Will he sit for depositions . Here, Andrews Links with more organisations are being severed. Hes stepped down as chancellor of huddersfield university, and as patron of the Outward Bound trust. He will have much less to do. Hes funded by an allowance from the queens private income. Its not known whether that will now be cut. Nicholas witchell, bbc news. Turning to google, it is extending a ban on political campaigns targeting advertising, people based on their supposedly political leanings. The same political groups will only be able to target ads on general categories, such as age and gender. This retraction is already in place in the uk, has been a lot of impact on the internet on that. This restriction is in place in the eu as well, it will be imposed by google worldwide by january 2020, well, it will be imposed by google worldwide byjanuary 2020, it well, it will be imposed by google worldwide by january 2020, it could have big implications for next year . Us president ial vote. We arejoined by dave lee who in san francisco. First of all, what exactly are google saying that they are now not going to be doing. They are simply going to be doing. They are simply going to be doing. They are simply going to make it more difficult for people to campaign, to target people based on what their political beliefs are. Like any category in advertising, whether it is somebody who likes football or likes to read articles about the economy, google does gather data on whether someone isa web does gather data on whether someone is a web browsing habits suggest they might be left or right leaning, or even an independent voter. In the us, campaigns have been able to target people based on that assumption, so, you can send adverts trying to push a candidate on the right to people who are perhaps more left leaning, to change their minds. That wont be possible in the new year. Also what soon wont be possible in at the uk as well as the ability for a political cafe tablet their own database ability for a political cafe tablet their own data base of ability for a political cafe tablet their own database of potential vote rs their own database of potential voters and ploughed out to google and magic to google and magic to google plus my own database and target those people individually as well. It isjust going to mean that political advertising across google will be much more broad, bringing it much more in line with the way their ads on tv and radio appear, where you are getting a general audience a jack to resonate with them, without this narrow advertising that has made political advertising very effective in the past. That is google, but unless you have everyone following the same rules, how effective will this be . You have facebook, at this point, not going that far. Yes, it is the absence of any clear rules that we have this mismatch between the different size. Google has made their new policy, facebook is allowing political advertising, but controversially, they have been saying that they will not step in if there is evidence of clear misinformation in those ads. Although there has been signed this week that they may be revisiting that position. Twitter, on a different contrast, they have seed nine political advertising whatsoever on twitter. The question for them has become how do you define political advertising . As an advert about Climate Change, for example, political advertising or not . You can see from those examples quite how complex this has become, which is why all those companies what a proper bit of regulation so they know what to do. What is the evidence that what google are trying to stop has had an impact on elections . We know that many of the disinformation campaigns in the run up to 2016 president ial election, to a lesser extent, the 2018 midterms, these ads were being used to push information that simply was not true. I think they are simply trying to go on top of that, whether it works or not, i guess we will find out as these notes happen. More than 20 people have died and thousands more have been injured in more than a month or protest in chile, which started over a hike in metal fees, but soon chile, which started over a hike in metalfees, but soon became chile, which started over a hike in metal fees, but soon became about inequality and living costs. Security forces have been described as using unnecessary force in an attempt to deliberately injured protesters, it is also a mistake to human rights violations. This is the new evening ritual in san diego comic santiago, protesters find out. What they can to cut off the city centre, preparing for running battles with police. Scenes like these are the new normal. It has been a month since the protests began in chile, but there is still anger and fear, people are protesting in the streets, the chilean government has offered changes, but here, there is no trust. And now, there are further reasons for anger. A new report by Amnesty International says that protesters have been deliberately targeted by police, with almost 150 people blinded by rubber bullets and tear gas canisters. Thiago is one of them, he is now blind in his left eye, the rubber bullet is still embedded. The special forces policeman was aiming Straight Line face, about eight metres from me, i stared at him as he shot me in the eye. This hospitals eye unit is struggling to keep up with the number of cases. Translation the injuries we have seen from the protest show very severe trauma in the eyes. That is seen an extremely high number of cases. Police say all the allegations will be investigated. Translation it is not ourjob to presume the facts before an investigation takes place, we are asking for an investigation to establish the truth in the eyes of the law. What, for now, even in the most vulnerable continue to be caught in the crisis to stop adding this nursery, parents and teachers say children struggle to breathe when the classroom was filled with tear gas. Translation that i was atrocious. They were drowning. They tear gas was in otley halls and entered the classrooms. They showed no respect, they were babies here. Chiles fall into crisis with deep and swift, it is clear now that the road about two stability will be a much longer journey. This is beyond 100 days. Still to come, it was all yellow for coldplay today decided to go green. We hear how the band is suspending tours to save the planet. 22 year old Helen Mccourt was murdered more than 30 years ago in. Her killer never revealed what he did with her body and her mother campaigned for a new light to prevent was being allowed to revealed where their victims are. Today, she said she was being horrified after horrified her daughters killer has been recommended for release before the law can be introduced. Though Helen Mccourt was killed 31 years ago, her body has never been found. With no grave to visit, her mother marie takes comfort instead from a memorial shes created at home. The only person who knows where helens remains are is the man who murdered her. Ian simms was jailed in 1989, and helens mother has fought for him to stay in prison until he was reveals the location. But today came the decision that he is eligible for release. I was devastated when i heard that the judgment was that he was going to be released. His victims body has never been found. Thats my daughter. Thats all i ever wanted, was to give helen. She never did anybody any harm. Marie mccourt has spent years campaigning to deny parole to killers who dont disclose their victims remains. Helens law was on its way to being introduced when parliament was dissolved for the election. The ministry ofjustice says it understands this is an extremely upsetting decision, and that ian simms will be released on licence and subject to strict conditions and faces a return to prison if he doesnt comply. Ian simms was photographed in march when he was on day release from prison. He has been refused parole six times before. Now he could be freed by christmas. Judith moritz, bbc news. The band coldplay have a new album. This time around, they have made the decision not to tour. Not a great moment if youre a fan who lexi and the like but its also a blow to their bank account. The last tour groups more than half 1 billion in its two year, five continent run. |j can imagine they can afford it next but this choice is not about the money. It is about the future, it is about the environment or impact of concerts. Instead of spending months on the road, they are going to plate two gigs in jordan. On the road, they are going to plate two gigs injordan. Here is the lead man emma chris martin, explaining the decision. We are taking time over the next year or two to work out. How can our tour not only be sustainable, but how it can be actively beneficial . The hardest thing is the flying side of things. But, for example, our dream is to have a show with no single use plastic, to have it be largely solar powered. So i think its a question ofjust accepting that you have to do your best, not to be too overzealous in criticising others because everyone will catch up, i think, if you prove that its easy to do it the right way. I wonder if he can. Lets examine what they can. We are joined by the founder ofjulies bicycle. Good evening to you. Lets deal with the big one first. What is the impact of bands touring on the environment . Our most recent data showed that uk bands, adjust uk, uk bands produce something in the region of 85,000 tonnes of carbon per year. And what does that mean . Its the equivalent of about 180,000 homes. The impact itself is not huge in terms of a set of global stats. Its actually small and, obviously cover their industries that produce far greater impacts. The point about it is it all matters. Everything that we do. That 85,000 tonnes is important. And i suppose, when chris martin is talking about solar panels to fuel concerts and worrying about plastic waste, essentially what he is talking about there is trying to redesign the way that his business works in order not to have an impact on the environment. Do you think they can get there . They can get there because they must get there. We all must get there. And i think this is a really terrific moment because what they are saying is they are going to take time out to rethink, and thats exactly what we need to do now. When you start really thinking about what the touring Business Model is like, what all parts of our Music Industry looks like in order to take some really good, strong, positive positions, start to allow us to really understand what a net zero carbon touring industry really looks like and how we get there. Is great to see this leadership from coldplay on this issue. The question is, for afan, on this issue. The question is, for a fan, that pleasure you get, getting that ticket. Ever remembers theirfirst getting that ticket. Ever remembers their first concert, going to that. For the fans, there is a lot potentially. Also for smaller bands coming up, that is how you get their name out there stop loop for sure. Nobody is talking about stopping tours or stopping live music. That would be a really dismal response to this climate crisis. But we can do things very differently. Youre absolutely right about smaller bands. Very often, the artists livelihoods are dependent on touring and we dont want to lose that pleasure but we can do so much differently. We can re route our torso we are not doing one performance, crisscrossing the globe. We can reduce the number of trucks. Some tours have a 60 trucks. That is a lot of staff, it is a lot of lorries. We can dig about renewable energy. We can thing about our merchandise, what artists sell, and crucially, artists can thing about the messaging in the campaign that they have when they are speaking to their fans because we mustnt forget that this is a crisis. We have to work out really sensible and rapid transitions to a net zero carbon world, so we dont ask a have a choice. The bands can try and sort of plan more effective roots, as you just outlined. What about the venues . I was thinking, when chris martin was talking about solar power, single use plastic, that burden falls on the venues themselves. You are absolutely right. Many venues are looking at this very closely. For example, live nation venues and festivals have agreed to phase out sickle use plastics by 2021. Thats very ambitious. Thats a really ambitious, major commitment to that. Venues can end indeed are being sourced by clean renewable energy. Festivals are fantastic laboratories for trying out new solutions that might be solar, might be wind. It is all sorts of off Grid Solutions to energy generation, so we do have a really rapid shift thats taking place. Indeed in the last few months, we have had a real exciting declaration made by big Music Industry players alongside artists, calling it a music and ecological emergency. Within days, we had people signing up to that, artists and the industry. There is a real well to understand what this means right now and find a solution. Julies alison, lets hope we get there. Thanks forjoining us, the founder ofjulies bicycle. One thing we wa nted ofjulies bicycle. One thing we wanted to bring you was this huge statue of babyjesus, apparently the biggest in the world, newly installed in the mexican state of zacatecas. Take a look. If you have been looking at the screen properly, you might have worked out why we wa nted you might have worked out why we wanted to show you this. It has become a hit around the world not because it is a huge statue of the because it is a huge statue of the because of what some people are saying is an apparent lanky likeness phil collins in his prime. There go. He has been waiting all his life for this moment. Im sure he never imagined that a day in paradise would be like this. Look at that i think we have yet to stop with the phil cullen funds there. It is the fact he would choose this receding hairline and the mullet. They did not give them a vest they did not. An apparent lever trying to get in the guinness book of records for the biggest babyjesus but that got overshadowed by susu studio. Phil collins filmed the video in my local pub. Bit of local fame. Thursday turned out to bea hello again. Thursday turned out to be a vast majority. Some of the brighter moments. This strip of thicker cloud working its way in. Outbreaks are in the afternoon. In the southwest, we have shower clouds showing their hands. That lot is going be pushed northwards overnight. We get a band of rain moving in, reaching Northern Ireland later in the night. Followed by those showers, frequent, some of them heavy, might even hear an odd rumble of thunder. Its a cloudy night. Temperatures 3 6 degrees. Frost free for most. But if we do see any lengthier breaks, we could see a touch of frost developing. Tomorrow, cloudy day coming up. A few showers pushing northwards. Later in the day, we see an area of rain initially develop across southern england before swinging into wales and the southwest, where the rain becomes heavier and slow moving. Although the winds are a little bit stronger tomorrow, i dont think theyre going to feel quite as chilly. The rain will continue to be slow moving through friday night, particularly across southwest england, especially across parts of cornwall. So we could see some localised surface flooding here. The weekend . A wet start for many of us. Cloudy with outbreaks of rain. Sunday looks to be the better of the two days of the weekend. For many of us, a drier day but its pretty cloudy. Saturday, low pressure firmly in charge. Outbreaks of rain will pushed northwards across england and wales, Northern Ireland, reaching parts of scotla nd Northern Ireland, reaching parts of scotland to the afternoon. The north of scotland probably staying dry with occasional brighter spells. Of course, the rain is the last thing we need given that the ground remains completely saturated. On into the second half of the day, that rain becoming increasingly heavy across eastern scotland and that rain will be pouring down as we go through saturday night and some brisk winds here for time. Into sunday, that rain that will be affecting orkney and shetland. Clearing away. Will follow with a drier weather with a few showers but a lot of cloud. Later in the day, the next weather system from the atlantic. Return of outbreaks of rain to wales and southwest england, which of course is the last thing we really need. Thats your latest weather.
