A landmark case a woman who inherited a fatal disease from herfather sues a Hospital Trust for failing to tell her of his condition. And a battle for a tiny piece of Literary History, as a work by 14 year old Charlotte Bronte goes up for auction in paris. And coming up in the sport later in the hour on bbc news. Eddiejones tells us thats he worried about the impact that saracens huge punishment for breaking the salary cap might have on his england squad. Good afternoon and welcome to the bbc news at one. After violent scenes overnight at a University Campus in hong kong, several protesters have been arrested trying to escape from the site surrounded by police. Hundreds of protesters are thought to be trapped inside the Polytechnic University, which has become the latest battleground for the pro democracy demonstrations. Chinas ambassador to london said this morning that if the situation continued, the future of hong kong will be unimaginable and dreadful. Our correspondent robin brant reports. This is a university under siege and, at times come under attack. This is the latest of numerous fires to take hold in the last 2a hours. Outside, the police have surrounded Polytechnic University on bridges and on roads. Inside, the protesters are waiting, fearing a repeat of this. In the early hours of this morning, police raided part of the campus. A tense stand off remains, though. Around 500 protesters have barricaded themselves in, their food and Water Supplies are running low. They still have petrol bombs and other weapons, though. Just before two oclock in the afternoon, one group tried to escape. Its 1 45pm, all of a sudden, we hear tear gas and you look down and see a large crowd of protesters. They are basically making a run for it. I think there must be maybe a hundred of them. They came running out over the barriers and a large amount of tear gas was fired down in their direction. A handful were arrested. Police say anyone leaving the campus will be charged with rioting. I would urge those rioters, do not try to escalate the level of weapon or violence. We have the capability. I will once again urge them to come out, surrender. The focus now, for the university at least, is to end this peacefully. We have now received the assurance of peace, of a temporary suspension of the use of force under the condition that, if the protesters do not initiate the use of force, the police will not initiate the use of force. The stand off continues, though, and supporters are streaming into the area around here in large numbers to provoke the police and to try to impede them. We heard that the student inside, they dont have food and water and they want to get out. This shows no sign of de escalating the opposite, in fact, and the police are now sandwiched between protesters barricaded inside and their supporters outside, on the march again. We canjoin we can join robin we canjoin robin brant live now. Described the scene for us as it is going on. I spoke about protesters on the march and here they are in their thousands. This road was open a few hours ago with traffic flowing but supporters have descended on the area, we are in kowloon, and they area, we are in kowloon, and they are bringing supplies but many are seeking to block the road. That has already been a confrontation with riot police earlier where tear gas was exchanged but the number is growing and it is definitely in the thousands. This is all in support of those few hundred protesters who are in the university which is about half a kilometre in that direction and that the stand off that shows no sign of ending this evening but i think there is more evidence of some of the protest is seeking to leave with some images of them coming down ropes and exiting the University Campus. The warning has been that they will not be violence from the police but anybody will be arrested by police tonight and charged with rioting. Robin, many thanks, our correspondent robin brant in hong kong. Borisjohnson has said the government will postpone further cuts to Corporation Tax. Speaking to the annual conference of the Employers Organisation the cbi, mrjohnson said the move would save £6 billion which could be used for other priorities, including the nhs. The labour leader, jeremy corbyn, set out proposals to create 320,000 apprenticeships in england. This report from our Business Correspondent theo leggett contains flash photography. Another day, another destination for the Prime Minister on the election hustings. This time, a chance to plead his case before Business Leaders at the cbis annual conference. His message on the economy was carefully chosen, and the language, inevitably, colourful. Like a formula one supercar. He spoke about plans for a cut in National Insurance contributions for many firms, and promises to promote research and development. Also, a review of business rates. But there was a sting in the tail. If i also announce today that we are postponing further cuts in Corporation Tax. And before you storm the stage, and protest. Laughter let me remind you, this saves £6 billion, that we can put to the priorities of the british people, including the nhs. We have already cut it from 28 to i9 . The stage wasnt stormed, but the decision to delay a 2 tax cut for businesses due next april was unlikely to have been aimed at the audience sitting in front of him. Next to speak, the labour leader, jeremy corbyn. I also hope you enjoyed the warm up act thats just left the stage. Laughter he dismissed claims that he was anti business and outlined plans for what he called a green industrial revolution, underpinned by a new generation of apprenticeships. So, today, we are announcing a new climate apprenticeship programme, delivering 320,000 apprenticeships in england alone during the first year of a labour government. These will offer training to School Leavers and workers are looking to change jobs mid career, creating the engineers, technicians and construction workers we need to. The liberal democrat leaderjo swinson will address the conference this afternoon. Visiting a Technology Company in st albans this morning she insisted an anti brexit approach made her is the Natural Party of business. Are also open to making sure business can get the skills and tale nt sure business can get the skills and talent they need. I have been at a high tech business here today and they have been telling me about the challenge they have and how it is important we have an open immigration regime by staying in the eu with the freedom of movement it brings and that makes it easier for business to get the talent they need to make money and provide jobs and pay taxes. Their Party Leaders know they do need to make the right noises about business but its better ta ke noises about business but its better take all three are other more focus that winning hearts and minds in the country at large and pleasing the power brokers in the hall today. 0ur reality check correspondent chris morris is here with more detail of todays announcements. So, weve heard the pitches to the Business Community from the two main parties this morning. And the Prime Minister no surprise here promised to get brexit done, and cut a range of taxes on business. But perhaps the most eye catching item in his speech was actually taking something away from business, postponing a promised cut in Corporation Tax to invest more in public services. At the moment, Corporation Tax, a tax on profits, is i9 . Government policy was that it would have been reduced to i7 next year. The conservatives say postponing that cut will raise £6 billion, a figure based on official statistics. Its certainly a change of tone from when mrjohnson was running for the tory leadership earlier this year, when he insisted incorrectly that cutting Corporation Tax always raises revenue, because of the wider effect a tax cut has on business activity. One of labours offers to the cbi is a scheme of what it calls climate apprenticeships, creating employment for people to work as engineers and technicians in Sustainable Industries such as green energy and transport, and agriculture and forestry. Labour says it will create on average 80,000 apprenticeships a year in england during its first term in government, replacing the current system, which has been criticised for being too inflexible. But labours new plan would be partly funded by its proposal to hand 10 of every company with over 250 employees to a scheme controlled by workers not exactly a business friendly offer. And overall, the cbi is extremely worried by labours plans for renationalisation across the economy. But whoever wins this election, there is another big concern hanging over the Business Community will brexit really get done . What businesses want to know, especially exporters, is the terms on which theyre going to be able to trade with our nearest neighbours after brexit . Thats a negotiation with the eu that has yet to begin. They also want to know exactly what immigration policy will be in place, in order to allow them to attract the workforce they need, including in the low skilled sector. On both those points, trade and immigration, neither of the main parties can offer cast iron guarantees, which means those questions will continue to be aired throughout this election campaign. Thank you, chris. 0ur assistant political editor, norman smith, is at the cbi conference in greenwich. Why are the conservatives delaying a tax cut in the middle of an election . In the face of it, it is pretty surprising because it is normally a given that in a general election, the tories will promised tax cuts and made it tax cuts for business, it is as predictable as main in manchester or the central heating going on the blink of the day before christmas not so this time because borisjohnson wants to send out a very different message, to say to voters, my priority is not tax cuts for business but the nhs. He is suggesting the £6 billion saved from the proposed tax cut will go into the health service. Secondly, he wasnt really talking to the booted and suited power brokers of business here today, he was actually talking to the wider electorate and particularly labour voters opened a lot of the speech was devoted to tackling health and wealth inequality can evening up regional disparities, more spending for schools outside london, boosting productivity beyond the south east. As for business, i suspect it forms the rather brutal conclusion they are unlikely to vote forjeremy corbyn whatever their discomfort over his u turn on that tax plate. As for the labour leader, he also had a fairly comprising message, saying he would make no apology for his nationalisation programme, including that bombshell announcement at the weekend to part nationalised bt, even floating the possibility of more public ownership, bringing the bus network back under local authority control, something that might go down very well among the wider electorate. Where does it leave the Business Community . My sense is they arrived here nervous about brexit, nervous about Boris Johnson, and here nervous about brexit, nervous about borisjohnson, and probably even more nervous aboutjeremy corbyn. And they leave, well, pretty nervous norman, thank you. Throughout the election campaign, well be looking closely at the places where the final result could be won and lost, and asking people in those places about the issues that matter to them. Tomorrow, we will be reporting from southampton, all day, on tv, radio and online, starting with bbc breakfast, and radio 5 live. The liberal democrats and the snp are in Court Challenging itvs decision not to include them in a Party Leaders Election Debate tomorrow night. The event will feature only Boris Johnson and jeremy corbyn. 0ur Political Correspondent tom symonds is at the high court. What is their main argument . M what is their main argument . It is that this debate should not go ahead without their two leaders and they say it is a last minute attempt to go through the courts, and that the debate is likely to attract millions of viewers and the influential to be influential and have a significant impact. The lib dems chairman, sal brinton, told me on the way into court that it was a week and shameful decision not to be included and no tv executive should have the power to decide which voices are represented. Their legal argument is based on the requirement of broadcasters to be impartial and they say itb is not being impartial for two main reasons. Firstly, brexit itv. They say the conservatives are a brexit party and that labour is not decided either way and only the lib dems are the party of remain and they say that means they should be included because it is such an important issue at the moment. They also say that the broadcaster, itv, has not taken that the broadcaster, itv, has not ta ken account of that the broadcaster, itv, has not taken account of the support the liberal democrats got during the european elections. If you look at the 0fcom code, the level of support that parties get at elections is pretty important when deciding how much coverage to give them. The lib dems did less well in 2015 and 2017 but the party says they did pretty well at the european elections. Another reason, they say, the two judges hearing the case should give them access to the tv debates. At them access to the tv debates. At the snp has joined the legal battle in an attempt to win and they are saying on the basis that Scottish Independence is an important part of the electoral mixed. In the last few minutes itv has started to give evidence, saying that if it loses it will pull the tv debate and the Interview Programme it was planning for tomorrow night. Tom, thank you very much. There are growing calls for the duke of york to cooperate with legal cases in the us about his links to the convicted sex offenderjeffrey epstein. In his bbc newsnight interview, Prince Andrew denied having any sexual contact with an american woman, virginia roberts, who says she was forced to have sex with him at the age of 17. Epstein took his own life while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Andy moore reports. We have come to Buckingham Palace in highly unusual circumstances. Its the interview that continues to dominate the national conversation. People close to Prince Andrew told the bbc he stood by his decision to do it. They said he wanted to address the issues involved with what they called honesty and humility. But its hard to find anyone who thinks it was a success. I think if a member of the royal family who clearly was friendly with a convicted sex offender who is going to go on television, the first words out of his mouth should be im sorry, and if theres anything i can do to assist these victims in any way, shape and form, i would want to do that. But todays daily mail claims andrew has expressed in private the sympathy for epsteins victims that he didnt state in public. The sun takes a very different line, claiming the prince told the queen his interview had been a great success. Whatever the angle, the interview continues to dominate the headlines. Theres also analysis of andrews admission that he had met epsteins girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell this year, even though shed been accused of helping epstein groom his victims. If there are questions that ghislaine has to answer, thats her problem, im afraid. Im not in a position to be able to comment one way or the other. When was your last contact with her . It was earlier this year, funnily enough, in the summer, in the spring, summer. About what . She was here doing some running. Ghislaine maxwell has always denied the accusations against her. This was her six years ago. Elusive then, she hasnt been seen in public for many months and no one seems to know where she is now. Andy moore, bbc news. Lets speak to our correspondent Daniella Relph whos outside Buckingham Palace for us. Mixed reviews, but by and large, people feel that this interview backfired for the prince . Yes, i think that is a fair assessment. We havent actually had any kind of official statement out of Buckingham Palace today. But it is clear that, in terms of those closest to Prince Andrew here, that the plan had been to do that interview in the hope that it would just draw a line under all of those rumours and allegations swirling around his relationship with jeffrey epstein. Swirling around his relationship withjeffrey epstein. At swirling around his relationship with jeffrey epstein. At the criticism has been widespread, and there has also been a large amount of mockery around what Prince Andrew said during that interview. Perhaps the harshest criticism, the fact that he didnt quite simply and explicitly say, i am sorry, and i regret what happened to those young women. He didnt say that. Yes, he accepted there had been errors of judgment and damage done, but he didnt quite simply say i am sorry. What it seems is that this interview has not drawn a line under it, it has not drawn a line under it, it has opened up more lines of questioning for Prince Andrew to answer. Should he now, if he has done an interview of this kind, speak to the fbi and make a statement to them . How do the charities, the organisations of which he is a patron, feel about what has been said . Do they want to continue their association with him . There are now a large number of questions that remain to be answered off the back of that interview. At the palace, those closest to him still stand by their decision for him to go ahead with the interview. They feel he needed to be honest and show some humility, they want him to bejudged on that. Stand off in Hong Kong Riot Police surround a University Campus with hundreds of pro democracy protesters inside. Coming up, we report from the island of lesbos, as the number of refugees and migrants crossing from turkey to greece reaches the highest level in nearly five years. Coming up in the sport in the next 15 minutes on bbc news, is this the new order in tennis . Tsitsipas targets the grand slams next year, after winning the atp finals in london. The number of refugees and migrants taking to boats to cross from turkey to greece has surged in recent weeks. Arrivals are now at their highest level since 2015. More than 57,000 people have reached greece this year, driven in part by instability in places such as afghanistan. Thats still well below the 850,000 arrivals of four years ago but greece is struggling to cope, as our europe correspondent Damian Grammaticas reports from just off the island of lesbos. It may look like a flashback refugee boats heading for european soil. But this is now. British led rescue teams are busy day and night. They are scooping up people up to 50 at a time. A pregnant woman, unable to walk after the freezing sea crossing. The numbers reaching the greek islands are rising again. Were nowhere near the levels of 2015, but arrivals are at the highest point since europes refugee crisis. 0ut out on the water, greek coastguards. Its only the turkish government that can stop the boats coming. So far this year, more than 55,000 people have got past turkish patrols. Christmas continues and it has some rising potentials, because we see that there are many days when we have maybe arrivals of 200 or 300 persons. Many eu countries have sent vessels to help secure this border. With more boats, they can control these waters better, but that doesnt mean they can stop the arrivals. And the rise in numbers means the pressure is growing again on greece and on its islands. So, the Reception Centre at moria, built for 2000, has overflowed now holding six times that number. The reason that theyre still coming theyre still fleeing the same problems, wars and insecurity, hoping for better lives. So, the place has become a slum. And, amid the rubbish in this corner of europe, afghans bake their own bread. Syrians have set up shops. Iraqis try to feed their families. Its a melting pot of peoples which every day expands. Do you find this easy . Yes one of the few things that this family have carried from afghanistan are their Daughters School certificates. Their 13 year old just once a place where she can study maths. You want to study more . Yes. In a school anyway . Can you study here in the camp . We dont have any teachers. No school . Here, hope have to be put on hold. Eu countries still cant agree how many refugees each should take, so the asylum process is grindingly slow. This is your refugee papers . That is this country. Romal salehi arrived from afghanistan a month ago. He has been given an exact date for his hearing, july next year. Your eu exam 2020, 7, 16th. And at seven oclock. Thats a long time for me. So you have to wait all of this time . Yes, waiting for this time. Waiting, four years into this crisis. Tens of thousands, left cold and hungry. Europe, failing to deal with them. Singing the hopeful and the desperate, who came to its shores looking for protection. Damian grammaticas, bbc news, lesbos. A woman who inherited a fatal, degenerative disease from her father is going to the high court to sue a london Hospital Trust for failing to inform her of his condition. The woman only discovered after her own child had been born, who may also have inherited the incurable brain disorder. 0ur medical correspondent fergus walsh is at the royal courts ofjustice in central london. The facts of this case are tragic . They are, it was back in 2007 that the woman, who cant be identified, her father shot the woman, who cant be identified, herfather shot dead her the woman, who cant be identified, her father shot dead her mother and her father shot dead her mother and he was detained under the Mental Health act. The doctors suspected he might have a genetic condition, huntingtons disease, which causes progressive destruction of brain cells, and can lead to aggressive behaviour. And when they finally confirmed that with him, he said he didnt want his daughter told, because she had just informed him she was pregnant and he was worried she was pregnant and he was worried she would have an abortion. Now, she did go on to find out, but only after her own daughter was born. And she says that st georges health ca re she says that st georges health care nhs trust owed her a duty of care. Now it is being confirmed that she has the gene, she said she could develop symptoms of huntingtons disease at any moment. She said she would have had an abortion, because she would not want to bring a child into the world that would potentially have to care for her. Her daughter also has a 50 50 chance of having the huntingtons gene, but she has not been tested. This goes to the heart of patient confidentiality, a cornerstone of the doctor and patient relationship, and whether, when it comes to genetic tests, that hospitals owe a duty of care notjust to the patient, but two other family members who could be passed on a really serious condition like this. Thank you. Fergus walsh. The american businesswoman whose links with borisjohnson have been repeatedly questioned has described her anger at the way she feels shes being treated. Its alleged that she received favourable treatment when mrjohnson was mayor of london because of their friendship claims which he denies. Ms arcuri told the bbc that the whole situation has left her feeling snubbed by a man she considered a friend. Its been almost ten years that i have had him in my life. The fact that i have to now be dragged back to britain, to somehow stand up for myself, not to be afraid to actually call him out for just looking myself, not to be afraid to actually call him out forjust looking the other way and allow me to be fed to the lions. Ifind it other way and allow me to be fed to the lions. I find it absolutely atrocious. Hes got an entire pr team, you know . And when i reached out to him, asking him about this media, and what happened with the story, i was completely sidelined. Why keep me away . Why treat me like the enemy . A tiny piece of Literary History no bigger than a box of matches is going under the hammer in paris right now. Written by a 14 year old Charlotte Bronte, its a miniature magazine created for her toy soldiers. The manuscript is expected to go for hundreds of thousands of pounds and its hoped it could return to brontes native west yorkshire. Lizo mzimba reports. The moment the museum succeeded in by an incredibly rare Charlotte Bronte book for six of the thousand 600,000 bronte book for six of the thousand 600,000 euros. Journal of a frenchman, paris, april 17. It is some of the authors earliest known writing. Charlotte bronte was just 1a when she wrote this collection of short stories. The books, not much bigger than postage stamps, were written for a set of toy soldiers owned by the bronte children, to read while they played. Charlotte bronte writes jane eyre 11847, if im correct, and so she is about 30 years old and this is just the beginning of her writing, she is already very assured and she knows exactly what she wants to write about and so, it is very important that we know these manuscripts. Six books were written in total, five of them still survive and, up until today, the Bronte Parsonage Museum has owned all but the one being auctioned in paris. They are of more than just a passing interest to bronte fans. This little book in particular has a scene in it which is a burning bed scene, which is the kind of precursor to the famous scene injane eyre where rochester is in bed and his bed sheets are on fire and jane saves him. We think that, at the age of 14, charlotte was actually having these early ideas of what would become one of the greatest novels in english literature. The book was last auctioned in 2011 but the museum was outbid when it sold for nearly £700,000. Since then, the museum has been hoping for another chance to bring this book home to the place it was originally written. Lizo mzimba, bbc news. Time for a look at the weather. Heres matt taylor.
