First to hong kong, where i want to build up a picture of some rapidly moving events. A short time ago, saw pictures of at least a0 people arrested near the Polytechnic University. They were detained outside hotel icon on Science Museum road. The universitys been the scene of intense clashes between Anti Government protesters and police throughout the weekend. At 5 30am local time, the police advanced into the huge campus. Protesters set fire to a barricade on the main entrance. Police used tear gas and water cannon. Our correspondent gabriel gatehouse witnessed events. The assault on the gap is has started about five minutes ago. We saw several dozen like clad Police Officers suddenly materialise out of nowhere and start storming the place. They were firing rubber bullets and tear gas, and in response the protesters only stole the petrol bombs they had, sometimes hurling hold boxes at a time which has caused two fires at the main entrances at the campus. Everyone is milling around, there is quite a bit of panic. I have seen some injured people. This does seem at the beginning of the entities campus protest. For this campus protest. The bbcs andrew wood is in hong kong monitoring developments for us. Andrew, what is going on at the moment . It may be the beginning of the end of the protest, but they are still going on. There seems to be a stand off again between the police and protesters who have remained inside the campus inside the buildings there. It seems they are not being allowed to leave. Now, earlier this morning the head of the Polytechnic University said he had negotiated a ceasefire or a truce between the two sides, that seems to between the two sides, that seems to bea between the two sides, that seems to be a stand off at the moment. Dozens of student protesters near the university have been arrested as they have come out. And also, it appears that some of the protests are spreading a bit now some of the surrounding streets in the area of kowloon where the university is near. They seem to be spilling onto the streets once again. And how is the streets once again. And how is the standard of with the nearby protests . The standard of with the nearby protests . How are they affecting life and the rest of hong kong the stand off . Life and the rest of hong kong the standoff . In kowloon, i think they are disrupting things quite a bit more, now. Broadly speaking we are seeing the authorities, they close the schools last week and remain closed today. There are problems on the trains, some services are not running. The Hospital Authority has wanted you dont have an urgent appointment, dont have an urgent appointment, dont go to your local hospital. And one of the pro establishment figures here has suggested that perhaps there should be a curfew in some of there should be a curfew in some of the worst hotspots for the protests. That was sort of floated last week andi that was sort of floated last week and i think the government stepped back from it, thats what it looked like, anyway. So perhaps the curfew might be back. Dont forget, this weekend we have local elections here in hong kong. Carrie lam has said in the past that if violence continues, those elections could be cancelled oi those elections could be cancelled or suspended. At the moment, there doesnt seem to be any sign that the protesters will pull back, so it will be up to carrie lam whether the elections go ahead or not. If she decides to cancel them or suspend them, that could make the violence even worse. It is difficult to say the moment. Certainly every time carrie lam has tried to, in the last couple of months, tried to settle things down, it seems to have backfired. You mentioned the possibility of a curfew suggested by one lawmaker, is that a serious option . It would be a very difficult option . It would be a very difficult option to pull back from, that is the thing. Its like, the weekend, we saw soldiers from the Peoples Liberation army out on the streets. Now this is something that the protesters had feared people in hong kong have feared. They werent in military uniforms and so on, they we re military uniforms and so on, they were wearing t shirts and fatigues and were helping to clear up some of the mess left behind by the protesters and dismantle some of the barricades. It was a soft thing they we re barricades. It was a soft thing they were doing, but that may be a warning sign to the protesters. Look, remember, the Peoples Liberation army, the mainland army, troops are here in the garrison, they can be called upon if necessary. This was a fairly soft thing for them to do. So that is a possibility. A curfew, once it is implemented, it is hard to go back from an upward be bad for business in hong kong, which is already in recession now. There are lots of problems. Hotels, restaurants are empty, a lot of trade exhibitions have been cancelled. And the stock market, although it is up today because of a record on wall street on friday, on the whole it hasnt gone anywhere this year. Its fallen since the protest started 5 6 months ago. Thank you. The duke of york is said to be standing by his decision to give a Television Interview about his disgraced former friend Jeffrey Epstein and allegations made against him personally. Prince andrew told the bbc he didnt regret his association with epstein, while admitting it was a mistake to stay with him in new york in 2010, when epstein was a convicted sex offender. He also denied the allegations of Virginia Roberts who says she had sex with him in london when she was 17. 0ur royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell reports. Your royal highness, weve come to buckingham palace. The interview has been heard, andrews answers have been noted, with incredulity in some quarters and, one suspects, with something close to despair within the royal household. The reaction to his words in most cases has been negative. The consensus in pr terms the interview was extremely ill advised. Andrew was categoric about his denial of impropriety with the then i7 year old Virginia Roberts. She has claimed that on the night of their alleged first encounter, in 2001, she was introduced to him at tramp, the nightclub in central london. She says they danced together there, but andrew was emphatic that he was at home. He says he had taken his daughter beatrice to this pizza restaurant in woking in surrey in the late afternoon. But how had he managed to remember a specific day so many years ago . Because going to Pizza Express in woking is an unusual thing for me to do. A very unusual thing for me to do. Ive never been. Ive only been to woking a couple of times, and i remember it weirdly distinctly. As soon as somebody reminded me of it, i went, oh, yes, i rememberthat. In the united states, whereJeffrey Epstein lived, lawyers are saying andrew should now repeat his testimony under oath. Whether a person is a prince or a pauper, if anyone has evidence or information that might be relevant to an investigation of a criminal case, that person should provide it. And from those who have worked for the royal family and who are familiar with Prince Andrew, there is a feeling of weary resignation. They will be wondering, was the right decision made . Who made the decision to put him on . Did he make it himself . Or did he seek advice within the palace . My guess is that he bulldozed his way in and decided that he was going to do it himself, without any advice. Im truly grateful for the opportunity. It was supposed to be the interview which drew a line under the story for andrew and allowed him to move on. That moment is certainly some way off. There is no doubt people close to prince and you have been taken about ba bysitter prince and you have been taken about babysitter intensity of the negative reaction to the interview. However, i understand he stands by the decision to do it. People who knew him that i know him said he wanted to co nfro nt him that i know him said he wanted to confront these issues had on, and he did so with honesty in humility. He hopes that people judge he did so with honesty in humility. He hopes that peoplejudge him on that basis. Prince andrew stands by his exclusive interview to the bbc to defend his friendship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, sources say. Its been seen as deeply damaging. The burning of coal is a huge driver of Climate Change, producing around 40 of Global Carbon dioxide emissions. But its also estimated that coal mining employs six Million People worldwide. So, it stands to reason that helping those miners find alternative livelihoods will also help protect our climate. Its called a just transition, and one woman has been leading efforts to have it adopted worldwide. For our series, climate defenders, ahead of a major un conference on global warming, Maryam Moshiri went to meet her in northern spain. The sun is setting on spains coal Mining Industry. Mines on spains coal Mining Industry. Like this one in no| spain mines like this one in North Western spain lay silent. There is no just transition, there is no hope. And without hope, people will fight for survival. For years, the industry has been economically unviable, and now the demands of Climate Change are finishing it off altogether. They know that climate is an issue, but they also know that they had to be part of the solution. But, as one door closes, could more open . We need to build living jobs on a sustainable planet, and if the planet is to live, we need dramatic ambition. Sharan burrow is the head of the International Trade union confederation. A union boss with a difference. One who wants to defend the climate as well as workers. Workers are already on the front lines in many communities with their families of loss and damage, and their lives and livelihoods have really been threatened. We want to see this region live. And people like you who have been so important to the history, the employment, the economy of the region. At the end of last year, spain reached an agreement with unions and the Companies Involved to shut down all its remaining coal mines. The fourth generation. A deal was forged which promised 250 Million Euros to help miners like these retire early or retrain. I perfectly understand why people wa nt to i perfectly understand why people want to stay living here. It is so beautiful. They call it a just transition, and believe it is a model for the rest of the world. Sharan is here to tell miners there is hope for them, but the spanish coal Mining Industry is done. Some of the miners who remain unconvinced. Its good to look for alternatives. Sharan is visiting the recently shut down la escondida mine, one of many shes visited around the world to reassure workers about their future. I love being with the workers in their place of work and where they live. Coal burning is responsible for around a third of the rise in global temperatures, the biggest source. It looks very rich, guys. Globally, around six Million People are employed in coal mining. And in some parts of the world, mostly in asia, coal fired power stations are still being built. Round here, though, things are very different. Mines like this one used to be the lifeblood of this area. But over the past decade, over 30,000 jobs have been lost in the coal Mining Industry in this region alone. And now with effects of Climate Change and the changing economy, this once lucrative industry is coming to an end in spain. In the nearby city of leon, sharans visit is generating a lot of interest. Just transition is under way in several countries and industry sectors. And her message is blunt. We recognise there are nojobs on a dead planet. So we have to build newjobs, we have to look after everyone so no one is left behind. Have to look after everyone so noone is left behind. But there is a sharp reminder of the scale of the challenges she faces. The money these men were promised to help them retrain hasnt filtered through because of continued elliptical uncertainty in spain. Sharon understand the frustrations of the miners but believes there is no other way. Are they frightened . Yes. Would they take a final stand to save theirjobs for a few more yea rs . To save theirjobs for a few more years . Of course, that is human nature. The transition to a zero Carbon Society is essential. But it goes hand in hand with helping those whose jobs will be displaced. We need people to feel hope, to trust that they will have a secure future, that their children will have a future. They know that climate is an issue, they also know that they have to be part of the solution to feel the confidence that is necessary. And next week, well be looking at a huge source of global c02 emissions you may not even know about cement manufacturing. Well meet the boss of one cement company leading efforts to do something about it. Lets get some of the days other news. Dont forget, you can get in touch with me and some of the team on twitter. Im jamesbbcnews. In case you want to look at our website, have a look there. Thanks. Hello there. I think weve got a couple of drier days coming up. Some sunshine, but some cold mornings on the way as well. That said, weve still got a legacy of cloudy weather for east anglia and south east england over the next few hours. A few mist and fog patches, a few patches of drizzle. Skies clearing further north, weve already seen temperatures fall well, well below freezing and a sharp and widespread frost across the northern half of the country with showers running in across northern scotland here. The added risk of some icy surfaces to take us into monday. But for monday, its this ridge of High Pressure that keeps low pressure at bay to our west and to our east, and that means it should be a fine and dry day for the vast majority of us. Now, it might be quite cloudy across the extreme east of england for a time, but for most of us, after that cold and locally frosty start to the day, were looking at dry and sunny weather. Showers for the north east of scotland, a few running down our north sea coast of england. After that bitterly cold start to the day in the scottish capital, temperatures here only reach around 2 degrees through the afternoon, so it is going to be a cold one for sure. And if anything, monday night, the frost gets more widespread and more intense. Some of the sheltered glens in scotland could potentially see temperatures getting down as low as 10 degrees celsius. If that happens, that would be the coldest night of the autumn. Now, looking at the weather picture into the middle part of the week, High Pressure initially stays with us. But, increasingly, well see this low pressure try to make inroads off the atlantic, and thats going to be bringing rain or showers to western areas. But that said, i dont think the rains going to be as troublesome as it has been for much of this autumn. Now, we could have some lingering mist and fog patches to start off tuesday. 0therwise, cold and frosty. Well start to see this band of rain working in across northern ireland, maybe getting into western fringes of wales and perhaps into the extreme west of cornwall as well. But for most, its another dry day dry, yes, but still pretty chilly. Temperatures, 4 in edinburgh, 4 in hull and a 7 the top temperature in london. Heading into wednesday, the rain makes further inroads. So, a better chance of seeing some rain return to wales and south west england, the rain turning heavier later in the day to northern ireland. With more of a south easterly breeze blowing through the day, were going to start to see temperatures lifting by a few degrees. So, highs getting up to around 8 or 9 degrees in london and cardiff, around 8 degrees or so in aberdeen and a 10 for belfast. So, over the next few days, any rain is not likely to be as heavy or persistent as weve seen so often this autumn. Cold nights to watch out for, a few fog patches, but it does turn a bit milder later in the week. Thats your weather. This is bbc news.
