Also in the programme a sweeping election victory for gotabhaya rajapa ksa. Sri lankas new president says he will be the leader of all citizens, regardless of religion or ethnicity. And, how to help workers when dirty coal mines close. Can spain be a model . Good morning. Its 8 00am in singapore, midnight in london and also 8 in the morning in hong kong where local media are reporting that police have entered the Polytechnic University campus after a two day standoff between protesters and police. Activists inside the University Set its main entrance on fire as police made another attempt to take the building. Police have used tear gas and water cannon against a group of about 100 pro democracy activists, whove responded with petrol bombs and rocks fired from catapults. Our correspondent gabriel gatehouse, whos at the scene, sent this report a little after the trouble started. For the assault on the campus has started, about five minutes ago we thought several dozen black clad Police Officers suddenly materialise out of nowhere and start storming the place. They were firing rubber bullets, and tea rgas, the place. They were firing rubber bullets, and teargas, and in response the protesters unleashed all the petrol bombs they had, sometimes hurling whole boxes at a time which has caused two huge fires at the main entrances of the campus stopper you might be able to hear the fire alarm going off, everyone is milling around, there is quite a bit of annick. I have seen some injured people, this does look like the beginning of the end for this campus protest. We are continuing to monitor that situation in hong kong. But now lets take a look at another major story this hour. Prince andrew is said to be standing by his decision to give a Television Interview about his disgraced former friend jeffrey epstein. Speaking exclusively to the bbc, the queens third child denied having a sexual encounter with a 17 Year Old Girl in 2001. The prince has admitted that going to stay with convicted sex offenderjeffrey epstein after his release from prison was a mistake, and is now facing calls to assist Legal Inquiries in the united states. 0ur royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell reports. Your royal highness, weve come to buckingham palace. The interview has been heard, andrews answers have been noted, with incredulity in some quarters and, one suspects, with something close to despair within the royal household. The reaction to his words in most cases has been negative. The consensus in pr terms the interview was extremely ill advised. Andrew was categoric about his denial of impropriety with the then i7 year old virginia roberts. She has claimed that on the night of their alleged first encounter, in 2001, she was introduced to him at tramp, the nightclub in central london. She says they danced together there, but andrew was emphatic that he was at home. He says he had taken his daughter beatrice to this pizza restaurant in woking in surrey in the late afternoon. But how had he managed to remember a specific day so many years ago . Because going to Pizza Express in woking is an unusual thing for me to do. A very unusual thing for me to do. Ive never been. Ive only been to woking a couple of times, and i remember it weirdly distinctly. As soon as somebody reminded me of it, i went, oh, yes, i rememberthat. In the united states, wherejeffrey epstein lived, lawyers are saying andrew should now repeat his testimony under oath. They say andrew should now repeat his testimony under oath. Whether a person is a prince or a pauper, if anyone has evidence or information that might be relevant to an investigation of a criminal case, that person should provide it. And from those who have worked for the royal family and who are familiar with Prince Andrew, there is a feeling of weary resignation. Who made the decision to put him on . Did he make it himself . Or did he seek advice within the palace . My guess is that he bulldozed his way in and decided that he was going to do it himself, without any advice. Im truly grateful for the opportunity. It was supposed to be the interview which drew a line under the story for andrew and allowed him to move on. That moment is certainly some way off. There is no doubt that people close to Prince Andrew have been taken aback by the sheer intensity of the negative reaction to the interview. However, i understand that he stands by the decision to do it. People who know him say that he wanted to confront these issues head on. They feel that he did so with honesty and humility, and they say they hope that people willjudge him on that basis. Also making news today, the iranian president , hassan rouhani, says insecurity cannot be allowed, as protests against fuel price rises continue in a number of cities, for a third successive day. Mr rouhani told the cabinet that while protesting is the peoples right, its different from rioting. He defended the decision to increase the petrol price by 50 . At least ten people have been killed in clashes and hundreds have been arrested. Two australian politicians refused entry to china have said they will not retract their criticisms of the country. Liberal Party Mp Andrew Hastie and senatorjames paterson were due to go on a study tour in china next month, but their visa applications were rejected. Both men have been outspoken critics of china, singling out its human rights record, and its alleged interference in australian politics. The former mayor of new york, michael bloomberg, says he is sorry for his strong backing of the stop and frisk tactic used by the citys police. It disproportionately affected black and latino residents. The billionaire democrat, who was mayor from 2002 until 2013, said he believed the policy saved lives, but that good intentions were not good enough. Mr bloomberg has indicated he may join the democratic race for the presidency, but has yet to confirm this. The 21 year old greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas has won the tennis atp tour finals in london. Tsitsipas came from a set down to beat Dominic Thiem in a 3rd set tie break to take the title, in his first appearance at the tournament. Tsitsipas says he will mark the biggest victory of his career with a meal with his family and some champagne. Sri lankas most prominent military family is back in power, with Gotabaya Rajapaksa winning the countrys president ial election. He secured 52 of the vote, well ahead of his main rival, sajit premasada. Mr rajapaksa is best known for being head of the Defence Force when the Sri Lankan Government defeated the tamil tigers. The election largely split along ethnic lines, as Yogita Limaye reports from colombo. A wartime strongman returns, as sri lankas most powerful. Mr rajapaksa is seen as a leader who can keep their country safe. We dont have enough protection for the people. You see everywhere there are bombs and terrorists, day by day a lot of terrorists created here. So, we like to have a father for our mother country. In april this year, a series of attacks by islamist extremists killed more than 250 people. The days that gave mr rajapa ksa his deadly reputation. Torture, killings, disappearances of tamil minorities, the bombing of civilian areas. He is accused of them all during his crackdown to end the war in 2009. This is where the last very intense bit of fighting took place at the end of the civil war. Hundreds of tamils who were trapped here walked over this bridge into areas that we re over this bridge into areas that were under the control of the sri lankan military. Among them were rebel leaders who had negotiated a surrender with the government. But once they went across to that side, many of them were never heard from again. Some believe they were killed. Thousands of those who disappeared were also civilians. Theirfamilies still disappeared were also civilians. Their families still hold daily vigils asking for answers. Even though it has been a decade since the war ended. Translation though it has been a decade since the war ended. Translationzlj though it has been a decade since the war ended. Translation i dont think my son will come back, but we wa nt to think my son will come back, but we want to expose the atrocities of gotabhaya to the world and that is why a come here. Mr rajapaksa has a lwa ys why a come here. Mr rajapaksa has always denied the allegations against him, and as long as he remains president , he cant be held to account. Lets return to our top story. That stand off between protesters and police that is continuing at hong kongs university. What we see right now is the fire is still raging, but it has gotten smaller stopping the firefighters are here and they are going to find a way and. Thats what were seeing now, we know that we havent any protesters come out, so they are digging in. Are you aware, is it safe for you to stay there . And are you aware of how many people are there inside . We are going to guess at least 100, if not more, because we have not seen them come out throughout the night and earlier we did go in to see what was going on and there were, low hundreds, because the police had cordoned off the area, they have basically cancelled everyone including us and media, and volunteer first aid. Cancelled everyone including us and media, and volunteerfirst aid. They have cordoned us all and and even those who wanted to leave, those who havent been participating in any of the violent acts, they were unable to leave because police were only allowing press and first aiders out of the cordoned, and they were arresting anyone who didnt have id. Can you tell us a little bit about how the protesters themselves, how they have been behaving and reacting . You mean throughout the night or now . Anything that you can tell us would be invaluable. They did not budge. Throughout the day, we arrived yesterday around three oclock or four oclock in the afternoon and throughout the entire day protesters just stood firm. Police kept coming at them with water cannon, teargas, and maybe other munitions, but the protest alonejust other munitions, but the protest alone just stood firm, right on this street that we are on it which is in front of the entrance, ill move away and show the firefighters are spraying. We can see them now. 0k, so, yeah. Protesters were, as you mentioned, hurling petrol bombs towards the police line, towards the water cannon, and they used a catapult, and for a couple of times they were very successful. And on they were very successful. And on the other end, you can see the sun shining towards the hong kong station, protesters were also setting fire to, i think at least two footbridges and also the flyover to hong kong station, and police did come on that end and also used teargas and come on that end and also used tea rgas and perhaps come on that end and also used teargas and perhaps other munitions. Thats Jennifer Wang speaking teargas and perhaps other munitions. ThatsJennifer Wang speaking to me a little bit earlier, shes been monitoring that overnight, just to update you we have got a line coming from the Polytechnic University president , where the president is saying that he has reached a deal with the police in which officers will suspend all use of force against protesters inside the campus on the condition that the demonstrators do not attack. We are continuously monitoring the live images that are coming from hong kong and when we get any updates for you, we will bring them, but it sounds like, provisionally at least, that that stand off has been reduced somewhat and as long as the demonstrators dont attack them back, the police will not use force against the protesters, so we will continue to monitor the situation in hong kong. You are watching newsday on the bbc. Still to come on the programme we meet the trade unionist who thinks shes found a socially acceptable model to close dirty coal mines. Also on the programme it doesnt have to be all bad news, we speak to the filmmaker who documents the lives of humble heroes. Benazir bhutto has claimed victory in pakistans general election and shes asked pakistans president to name her as prime minister. Jacksons been released on bail of 3 million after turning himself in to police in santa barbara. It was the biggest demonstration so far of the fast growing european anti nuclear movement. The South African government has announced that its opening the countrys remaining whites only beaches to people of all races. This will lead to a black majority government in this country and the destruction of the white civilisation. Part of the centuries old windsor castle, one of the queens residences, has been consumed by fire for much of the day. 150 firemen have been battling the blaze which has caused millions of pounds worth of damage. Thank you for staying with us. This is newsday on the bbc. Im Sharanjit Leyl in singapore. Im kasia madera in london. Our top stories this hour protesters have set the entrance of hong kong polytechnic alight as police tried to storm the building. And further controversy for Prince Andrew after the bbcs exclusive interview, he says he doesnt regret his association with sex offenderjeffrey epstein. Lets take a look at some front pages from around the world. Londons independent is leading with the dramatic pro democracy protests in hong kong. We are leading with this story, too. It includes this photo of the latest clashes, and reports on the prospect of the authorities using live bullets if there is more violence. And le figaro is marking one year since the arrest of former nissan and renaut boss carlos ghosn. On its front page, the paris newspaper is looking ahead to his trial on charges of financial misconduct and his fight with the japanese judicial system. That brings you up to date with some of the papers. Thank you. The burning of coal is a huge driver of Climate Change, producing around 40 of Global Carbon dioxide emissions. But its also estimated that coal mining employs six Million People worldwide. So it stands to reason that helping miners find alternative livelihoods will also help protect our climate. Its called a just transition, and one woman has been leading efforts to have it adopted worldwide. For our series climate defenders, ahead of a major un conference on global warming, Maryam Moshiri went to meet her in northern spain. The sun is setting on spains coal Mining Industry. Foryears, the sun is setting on spains coal Mining Industry. For years, the industry has been economically unviable, and now the demands of Climate Change are finishing it off altogether. But, as one door closes, could more open . Sharon borrows the head of the International Trade union confederation. A union boss with a difference. One who wants to defend the climate as well as workers. We want to see this region live. At the end of last year, spain reached an agreement with unions and the Companies Involved to suck down all its remaining coal mines. A deal was forged which promised 250 Million Euros to help miners like these retire early or retrained. They call it a just transition, and believe it is a model for the rest of the world. Sharon is here to tell miners there is hope for them, but the spanish coal Mining Industry is done, but some miners remain unconvinced. Its good to look for alternatives. Sharon is visiting the recently shut down escondido mine in castieau early on, one of many she has visited around the world to reassure workers about their future. Coal burning is responsible for around one third of the rising global temperatures, the biggest source. It looks very rich, guys. Globally, around 6 Million People are employed in coal mining. And in some parts of the world, mostly in asia, coal fired power stations are still being built. Around here, though, things are very different. Mines like this one used to be the lifeblood of this area. But over the past decade, over 30,000 jobs have been lost in the coal Mining Industry in this region alone. In the nearby city of leon, sharons visit is generating a lot of interest. Just transition is under way in several countries, and industry sectors. Her message is blunt. We are recognised we recognise there are no jobs on a dead planet. But the scale she faces, the money she promised to help these men retrain hasnt filtered through because of continued Political Uncertainty in spain. Translation what i want to say is this agreement is good but it isnt being implemented. We need to build living jobs on a sustainable planet. If the planet is to live, we need dramatic ambition. The transition to a zero Carbon Society is essential. But it goes hand in hand with helping those whose jobs will be displaced. For sharran, it is very much a work in progress. She is well aware that in some cases, the reality does not yet matched the aspiration. Match. Here in the newsroom its only too apparent that disaster, conflict or tragedy seems to fill the majority of our news bulletins. But our next guest is a filmmaker who says it doesnt have to be that way. In fact, after quitting herjob as a tvjournalist over a decade ago, she has made 30 documentaries on what she describes as the worlds humble heroes, and shes in singapore for the screening of her latest project. Frederique bedosjoins me now. Shejoins me in the she joins me in the studio. Shejoins me in the studio. Thank you forjoining us. Tell us a bit about your latest project . Youve just had a film premiere about a story about a remarkable man. Yes, the sacrament of tenderness. This was my latest film in the french film festival. It was presented on the closure of the festival, a great honour. The subject is a canadian man who just passed away. He was really the Mother Teresa of nowadays, so a great man, Vojtech Jasny. He funded lush, in 38 countries over the world. These are communities taking care of the disabled people. The message of Vojtech Jasny is amazing. Its really universal in this age, because the way a society can treat the weakest, the most Vulnerable People in the society is kind of an excellent barometer to measure the level of humanity, the degree of humanity of a civilisation. And that is just humanity of a civilisation. And that isjust one humanity of a civilisation. And that is just one example of the kind of films you have been making. Lets go back to why you started this project, you are a formerjournalist yourself, and you changed your mind on all about, you turned your back on all about, you turned your back on that to do this project. Because as you say, the media is filled with as you say, the media is filled with a narrative of despair. So tell us about what started you on a journey . Yeah, that was really what i had in mind. I thought, yeah, that was really what i had in mind. Ithought, will well, if we only describe the world through a way that generates more and more anxiety, then we spread out to very large scale fear in the heart, if youre in the spirit, and fear is the worst counsellor. It causes selfishness, the search for the scapegoat, we stigmatise the others, the ones that are different from us, and ultimately it pushes us to build walls to separate each other. And this is indeed the phenomena we see around the world with physical was now. Its really important to spread out hope so doesnt mean doing good news journalism, out hope so doesnt mean doing good newsjournalism, or positive journalism, what i do, this is really how i coal my line call line is to do journalism with a hope for the future. That it is never too late, anything is impossible, and if its in our hands. If we want a better world, then it is up to us to build it. Thank you, frederique bedos, with your hopeful message and your future of humble heroes. That brings us to the end of this edition of newsday. Im Sharanjit Leyl in singapore, and kasia madera in london. Hello there. I think we got a couple of dry days coming up. Some sunshine and cold warnings on the way as well. That said, we still have a legacy of value whether for east anglia and the midlands. Skies clearing further north, weve seen some temperatures fall well below freezing and is sharp, widespread frost across the northern half of the country. Showers coming in across northern scotland here. The added risk of icy services to take us added risk of icy services to take us into monday surfaces. Low pressure to our is, that means it should be a fine and dry day for the vast majority of us. Cloudier crossed the extreme east of england for a crossed the extreme east of england fora time, crossed the extreme east of england for a time, but after that cold and locally frosty start of the day we are looking a dry and sunny weather. So is for the north east of scotland, if you raining down on north sea coast of england. After that bitterly cold start of the day in the scottish capital, images here reads two degrees to the afternoon, so reads two degrees to the afternoon, so it is going to be a cold one for sure so it is going to be a cold one for sure temperatures here reach. Some in scotland could see temperatures getting down as low as 10 temperatures getting down as low as 10 celsius. If that happens, that would be the coldest night of the autumn. Looking out the weather picture into the middle part of the week, High Pressure stays with us. But increasingly we will see this low pressure try to make inroads of the atlantic. That is going to bring renal showers to western areas. But that said, i dont think the rain is going to be as troublesome as it has been for much of this awesome. We could have lingering mist and fog patches to start off on tuesday, otherwise cold and frosty. We will see this band of rain working across northern ireland, maybe getting into western fringes of wales and into the extreme west of cornwall as well. But the most, its another dry day, dry, yes, but still pretty chilly. Four in edinburgh, four and whole, and seven the top in london. Heading into wednesday, the rain makes further inroads. So a better chance to see that rain returning to south west england, returning later in the day to northern ireland. Fourin in the day to northern ireland. Four in hull was that we are going to see temperatures lifting by a few degrees. Highs reaching eight or nine degrees in london and cardiff, a degrees or so in aberdeen, ten for belfast. So, over the next few days, heavy rain is not likely to be as heavy rain is not likely to be as heavy or persistent as weve seen, so heavy or persistent as weve seen, so often this autumn. Cold nights to watch out for, if you fog patches, but it will turn milder later in the week. Thats your weather. Our top story Hong Kong Police have entered the Polytechnic University campus after a two day standoff between protesters and police. Large fires broke out when protesters hurled petrol bombs and shot arrows from behind barricades. The latest violence is some of the worst the semi autonomous chinese territory has seen since the movement began. Theres further controversy for Prince Andrew after the bbcs exclusive interview he said he didnt regret his association with sex offenderjeffrey epstein. Now lawyers say he should assist investigations in america. And musician will. I. Am says a qantas Flight Attendant was racist towards him during a flight from brisbane to sydney. The frontman for the band black eyed peas tweeted that he was singled out when he missed a plane announcement to put his laptop away. Qantas denies the allegation
