Working eastwards across scotland, fairly bright towards east anglia and the south east with a few showers in the channel, but a chilly day for all. Clearer skies for scotla nd day for all. Clearer skies for scotland and Northern Ireland overnight, likely to see a widespread frost developed. Scotland and Northern Ireland coldest of all shown by the colours on the temperature chart here, but further south and east, frost free, because the cloud stays in place. Into tomorrow it could be windy and cloudy, east anglia and the southeast with rain at times close to the coast. But that is the exception rather than the rule, because for most at long last a welcome window of dry and reasonably sunny weather. The fog largely clears, but if it lingers throughout the day, it will be chilly with temperatures just above freezing. Hello. This is bbc news with shaun ley. The headlines. Scotland werent behind for long, though, john mcginn scoring the winner. 2 1 the final score. Well england have of course already qualified for euro 2020 but they face kosovo in pristina this afternoon in their final group game. Kosovo manager Bernard Challandes is calling england the best side in europe right now. And Gareth Southgate says thats all because of an abundance of attacking options. We have got a lot of good attacking players. That is the beauty of this team, that we can. Its difficult for defences to focus on one person to try and stop them because three, four other players can step forward, score goals, create goals. The movements are good and the individual ability is good, so i think we are quite difficult at the moment for the opposition to plan for. Well, southgates side won 5 3 when the two sides met last month in southampton and kosovos manager is expecting his defence to be in for another busy night this evening. Nobody has called so much. The incredible offensive of this team. 70, 60, 50, 50, 5 0 incredible nobody, no team, and that means for us it is a challenge, incredible challenge. Stefanos tsitsipas will face Dominic Thiem in the final of tenniss world tour finals in london this afternoon. Its the first time tsitsipas has qualified for the tournament and he caused a big upset in the semifinals, beating roger federer. The greek player, whos 17 years younger than federer, took an early lead and eventually the first set. Federer was flawless in beating Novak Djokovic earlier in the competition, but was well below par as tsitsipas eventually took the match in straight sets. I grew up watching roger as a kid, watching him at the finals, watching him in the wimbledon, plenty of finals. Wished i can step out on the Court One Day and face him and today i am here, living the dream. I could never picture myself standing here, but it did happen. Dreams do come true in the days other semifinal, Dominic Thiem beat the defending champion Alexander Zverev in straight sets. Ulster have also begun with a victory but onlyjust. They beat bath 17 16 Robert Little with the second of their two tries. There were also wins for leinster and glasgow. Thats all the sport for now. Now on bbc news, heres shaun with the papers. Hello and welcome to our sunday morning paper review. With me are katherine forster, journalist at the sunday times and the business commentator, josie cox. Welcome to both of you. Good to have you both with us at this time in the morning. Lets take a look at the front pages. Like many of the papers, the observer leads on the bbcs interview with Prince Andrew, and his comments that he couldnt have had sex with an underage teenager because he was at home after a pizza party with his daughter. The mirror focuses on the princes denial of a claim from Virginia Roberts that he was sweating profusely, saying this couldnt be true because he didnt sweat during that period in his life. The mail on sunday also leads with that story, saying the prince didnt express any remorse at his association with the paedophilejeffrey epstein. Meanwhile, the front page of the sunday express features a story about pensions, saying that labour plans to nationalise some utilities could risk private pensions. And the telegraph says that every conservative parliamentary candidate has pledged to vote for borisjohnsons brexit deal if he gets a majority of seats in the upcoming election. Lets begin with the Prince Andrew interview with Emily Maitlis for newsnight that was broadcast last night. If he wanted publicity, he has certainly got it. He has, but if he was hoping for a positive, we understand, this was hard for you, response, i think he and the palace will be very disappointed with the headlines, which are not favourable, shall we say. They all feature Pizza Express, no sweat, no remorse. And i think the key thing for me was the almost total lack of any sense of regret or culpability, even when he was asked, do you regret the friendship, he said no, because i got a lot from it, connections, it was all about him. And that was really not the look that he should have been going for. I dont know who briefed him, but i think it was a bit ofa who briefed him, but i think it was a bit of a car crash, really. This isa a bit of a car crash, really. This is a gift of a story for the sunday papers. I think it is, but is a gift of a story for the sunday papers. Ithink it is, but before anything else what we have to do is acknowledge the journalistic integrity and poise and grace and bravery with which emily and the team conducted that interview, because that is not an easy one. I think this is a historic interview. I have never seen anything like it. I watched it twice, i couldnt quite believe my eyes. And then beyond that, i completely agree with your point. I think its absolutely inconceivable how someone, how a memberof the inconceivable how someone, how a member of the royal family, who should demonstrate such core values of integrity and respect and dignity, can go through a one hour interview, one hour interview, and not spend an aeon of that time expressing regret, remorse. And all of that in the context of talking about a convicted sex offender. And even at the end of the interview, what i thought was most remarkable was when emily said at the very end, again, very dignified, very poised and graceful, she said, is there anything else you would like to say . That was his ultimate platform to talk about the suffering and the damage that this has done to so many people and how he has deep regret and sympathy for the families and the affected, and yet he said no, he has absolutely nothing else to say at this point. I suppose what it did expose is as Nicholas Witchell used the phrase early at naivete of the prince. When you look at the front pages, do you think he will be taken aback by the tone of the coverage . Because the tone is not only sceptical, its downright dismissive of him and his role and his whole approach in giving this interview. Its approach in giving this interview. Its not much more respectful of his position. In terms of world coverage on sunday newspapers, it is not one that the palace presumably. Know, and it does beg the question, why did he agree to do it . He obviously expected and thought and hoped that by doing this, he could paint himself in the most positive light. But he has looked at the very worst naive and foolish and not very self aware, and naive and foolish and not very self awa re, and thats naive and foolish and not very self aware, and thats being quite kind. Lets look at the papers in a bit more detail. The mail, it might surprise people that it shows absolutely no sympathy and says, not one single word of remorse. Sunday mirror, no sweat and no regret, that isa mirror, no sweat and no regret, that is a slightly mischievous play on the information that according to the information that according to the prince he was unable to sweat at the prince he was unable to sweat at the time because of treatment he had during the falklands war. No sweat i was at Pizza Express in the sun. In the sunday times did something quite interestingly. A montage of nine pictures, close ups of the princes face taken at different points throughout the interview, and thats Something Different from all the other papers, and it does sort of, you know, here he is looking troubled and then in other one is quite jolly. But its. Troubled and then in other one is quitejolly. But its. Dreadful, really, for the royal family quitejolly. But its. Dreadful, really, for the royalfamily at quitejolly. But its. Dreadful, really, for the royal family at this point in time. I think this montage suitis point in time. I think this montage sums up perfectly the sort of disjointed narrative, the confusion, the defensiveness, the overly defensiveness that he demonstrated, and then this one in the middle, i dont know if you can see that. This almost smile, and i think there were times during the interview which i thought were some of the most uncomfortable, where emily was asking a question, and the impression i got was that he was trying to disarm her by almost implying that the interview, that the question was ridiculous. And at that point he even smiled a little bit as if to say, this is such a ludicrous question, why are you even bothering to ask . And that was the least graceful reaction that i would have anticipated from him. The telegraph, just to complete it, instead of a multiple set of shots, goes for one single, rather sad looking duke of york. And i have to say, presumably as a result of this interview on the coverage, he will probably, he might be angry but he will certainly be sad about the fact that he doesnt seem to have done what he was hoping he would do, which is kind of get people to say, here is somebody who has been wrongly traduced, and he is doing his best to set the record straight. And all of that is down to him. He highlighted some of the benefits that he got from his friendship with jeffrey epstein, and that was just. It was convenient to stay with him the counterargument might be that at the time he was performing this public role as the governments trade envoy, so perhaps he was talking about the links in terms of useful information in business. He is not presumably profiting himself from that. But i think there is a line that you ought to realise you do not cross as a very public figure, as a sort of ambassadorfor the very public figure, as a sort of ambassador for the royal family and britain around the world. And what it boils down to is that a large chunk of the interview focused on this four day period during which Prince Andrew went to stay with jeffrey epstein, allegedly to break up jeffrey epstein, allegedly to break up the friendship because Prince Andrew says that at this point he had realised that it was not good, it was not favourable for him to be seen associated with this man. If you want to break up a friendship, would you really go and stay with someone would you really go and stay with someone in their town house in new york for four days and very publicly go for a walk with them through central park . I certainly wouldnt. And then he talked about may be because he was perhaps too honourable, that this was perhaps a problem, and no doubt he believes that, but he didnt come across as terribly honourable, i dont think, most people will feel. It is something about tone, wasnt it that wasnt quite right in that interview from the Princes Point of view. As you said, a remarkable interview. We will leave it there for now. I suspect this story wont have gone away in the way that the prince might have hoped for. Lets look at some other stories, and there is plenty of other stuff around which would have got a lot more coverage had it not been for this interview. I dont think ive got the. Have you got an observer on your pile . We have, we are sharing one. That has got the photo of the prince with Emily Maitlis on the front. The only one actually has emily on the front. But a lot of praise inside for the interview on the way it was conducted. Not an easy interview to do by any means. Lets look at the other stories, then. The times, this is an interesting one. This is actually a joint panorama investigation, josie. Army covering up investigation, josie. Army covering up torture and child murder. These are ongoing claims that have surfaced and resurfaced every so often. This is a remarkable story. It is the result of a one year investigation by the sunday times in conjunction with panorama, and it is releasing evidence implicating british soldiers in very, very brutal murders of civilians, of children, in afghanistan and iraq. It paints a really bloody picture of the situation, and what happened allegedly wasjust sort the situation, and what happened allegedly was just sort of swept under the rug for political reasons. And i think this could actually have all kinds of implications for the current government, and also maybe even for the general election coming up, because of course last week borisjohnson, one of the election pledges he made, was that he would have meant the human rights act to protect troops from legal action in the future. So i think highlighting the future. So i think highlighting the extent to which troops could be exempt from such legal implications now is quite striking in the context of that. What do you think a bit . It is very shocking, and yes, i think it is going to be politically quite difficult in light of this what borisjohnson is difficult in light of this what Boris Johnson is wanting difficult in light of this what borisjohnson is wanting to do to shut down prosecutions. But also, there were war crimes inquiries that we re there were war crimes inquiries that were closed down for political reasons. That is the allegation. And thatis reasons. That is the allegation. And that is what this insight and panorama investigation is saying, by the defence secretary at the time, sir michael fallon, in 2017. But the details are quite horrific. The allegations that three children and one young man was shot in the head at close range while drinking tea in their home in afghanistan. Which just beggars belief, really. And then again, also crimes with people being held by the black watch. And you just think obviously Justice Needs to be done. And it paints a very bleak picture of the steps that have been taken or not taken, in fa ct have been taken or not taken, in fact the steps that have been taken to potentially brush this under the carpet. And there will be more on that in the Panorama Programme this week. The front of the telegraph next at that picture of Prince Andrew. Every tory candidate sainz brexit deal pledge . Finally a united party yes, every tory Party Candidate has apparently pledged their support for boriss brexit plan, to get that through the house of commons. To me, the most interesting thing about this story is that it raises the question of how our political system actually works. As a constituent of those candidates, how would one feel to know that actually perhaps 1s own interests and views might not actually be ta ken interests and views might not actually be taken into account at any point by somebody who is meant to represent our best interests. This to me highlight the polarisation that brexit has created, the fact that our political syste m created, the fact that our political system has devolved almost irreparably, i think, system has devolved almost irreparably, ithink, to system has devolved almost irreparably, i think, to this sort of battlefield, and i think it is a real shame that that is what the syste m real shame that that is what the system has become. And it shows a realfundamental lack system has become. And it shows a real fundamental lack of trust. There is a general lack of trust of the people and politicians. But also the people and politicians. But also the lack of trust within the individual parties, because the conservatives, to do this it is quite astonishing, but then of course going back not very long, they kicked out 21 of their own party because they had rebelled. So you can see the logic for this. They wa nt to you can see the logic for this. They want to make it absolutely clear borisjohnson want to make it absolutely clear Boris Johnson wants to want to make it absolutely clear borisjohnson wants to say give me a majority, we are going to get it done. So it is understandable, but it is unfortunate that we are in a position where trust levels are so low in politics, and even between themselves. Absolutely, and as you say, the Prime Minister almost has to say to his own backbenchers, you must sign this, i need to know that you are going to be standing behind me, not obstructing my path. And people previously in the conservative party said they would support, and when push came to shove, they didnt. Support, and when push came to shove, they didnt. Interesting questions about those who as you say we re questions about those who as you say were kicked out and let back in and our standing as candidates again. Does that mean they have renounced theirformer passion . Does that mean they have renounced their former passion . Lets look again at the telegraph. The times, rather. The poles bounce for boris. Poles always polls always to be treated with a pinch of salt. This yougov of poll today gives the conservatives a 17 point lead on 45 , conservatives a 17 point lead on 45 , which is the biggest lead they have had since not that long before the election in 2017, and labour on 28 , and it appears that the lib dems and the brexit party are being squeezed, so the lib dems, this great revival, this great hope that so fast that doesnt seem to be happening, the brexit party seems to be moving very clearly to we are delivering brexit. Imjust wondering when the ground work was done for this, because if it is before Nigel Farages announcement, thenit before Nigel Farages announcement, then it is particularly interesting. The 14th to the 15th, so sense. So that might be because people have realised there isnt going to be a brexit candidate if they are in a tory seat. But you should be very wa ry tory seat. But you should be very wary of. Nobody should be counting any chickens, because at this point, four weeks before 2017, the conservatives were way ahead, and the only question was how huge is the only question was how huge is the majority going to be, so things can change very fast. Absolutely. And finally, the telegraph again, labour to promise free dental checkups for every adult. When did you buy the last visit your dentist . A long time ago. In the last year, i hope, but i may have had a reminder to make an appointment. I shall check that i did make these when i was pregnant, pregnant ladies get free nhs dental checks, and i did make the most of that at the very beginning of my pregnancy when i was excited about it, and then i lost track. But this is a story that i can actually get behind. I think that what they are proposing essentially is free dental checks for everyone in the uk. Currently children under the age of 18 and as i say pregnant ladies and new mothers and people on benefits. We should clarify, scotland already has a free dental checkups, so england Northern Ireland, wales, Northern Ireland and wales are devolved but it looks like they might follow the policy. Is that what labours now. Do you think their approach has changed . Do you think their approach has changed . We do you think their approach has changed . We have the off on broadband are now dental. Is it a new kind of retail politics . We are in the era of the big spenders, and whatever the conservative say they are going to spend, labour are going to spend so much bigger. There is a thought for a Campaign Song for jeremy corbyn, hey big spender. Thank you for spending a little time with me we will be back after the weather. Thats it for the papers. Dont forget you can see the front pages of the papers online on the bbc news website. Hello. For many of you, the fading autumn colours will be under sunshine for the next few days. 0ut there at the moment, still fairly cloudy skies for the majority, claudia sten gray greatest of all in parts of northern england, the north and west of wales, parts of the southwest. Rain and drizzle at times, the odd heavier but too, to the south of that, the morning mist clears. A brighter enter the day towards scotland and Northern Ireland as the showers continue eastwards. Chilly for all, ireland as the showers continue eastwards. Chilly forall, but ireland as the showers continue eastwards. Chilly for all, but the wind like today, although the breeze will pick up tonight across eastern counties of england, rain out of the near continent gets closer and closer. Staying cloudy for much of england and wales, but where the sky is clear, particularly for scotland, Northern Ireland and the far north of england, a widespread frost on the temperature chart in the blue colours, and they could be frost elsewhere. That is because we have an area of High Pressure moving on, ive not said that for a while. Not a substantial one but enough to mean a substantial one but enough to mean a dry day for many. The main exception being towards some eastern counties of england. Around these north sea coasts there will be breezes blowing, and rain if you are close to the coast, but it is the exception rather than the rule. Most places at long last seeing blue skies, Early Morning frost clearing, the fog clearing as well on the wins away from those eastern coasts should be mainly light. Still a cold day, and if the fog lingers for any length of time, the central belt of scotla nd length of time, the central belt of scotland for instance, one or 2 degrees will be the afternoon high, and of course with a cold day like that, with clear skies more dominant into monday night, and even colder night, the coldest night of the week, and start to the day on tuesday morning. Widespread frost, some fog around as well, particularly for england and wales, a better day to the eastern areas as the windies is down, and more sunshine around, but in the west, Northern Ireland, the far south west of england and wales, we will see cloud increase and may be some rain here to see the day out. Still a cold one, but we are going to see a shift in wind direction as we go for the second half of the week, low pressure this time pushing in off the atlantic through tuesday into wednesday, trying to push those fronts away eastwards. High pressure eastwards. High Pressure Holding up a little bit, so some eastern areas will stay dry, in the west you are more susceptible to rain at times. Nothing desperately heavy or prolonged at this stage, but one certainly to watch, especially with Flood Warning still in force at the moment. This is bbc news. Im shaun ley. The headlines at 10. 00am Prince Andrew categorically denies having sexual relations with an american women who says she was forced to have sex with him when she wasjust 17. I can absolutely, categorically tell you it never happened. The duke of york said he does not regret his friendship with the convicted sex offender jeffrey epstein. In the election, the conservatives promise all migrants will be treated equally after brexit regardless of where they come from, but the foreign secretary rules out setting a target for the number of people entering the uk. Its its not just its notjust a volume, which yes we need to bring down, it is the kind of emigration that we have coming to the country, but we have to control the country, but we have to control the cost
