Now on bbc news, it is time for electioncast. Electioncast from the bbc. We are in this election because of brexit. We dont want to be thinking about a general election. We want to be buying our christmas presents. If anyone comes up to you and says they know what is happening, cock an eyebrow, smile politely and turn your back. Hello, everyone. It is the end of the first full week of the general Election Campaign. The main news is that everyone who works on this programme has finally started calling it reflection cast because we are going to look back at what has happened. It has not gone with the public at all so you can just call it electioncast. We have crammed into this tiny studio with some big brains to talk about the weeks events. I will let them introduce themselves. Hello. I am the former adviser to sajid javid. Introduce themselves. Hello. I am the former adviser to sajid javidlj used to work for the labor party. Any airport base anecdotes . This morning we were coming back from edinburgh and we were at the airport and a non scottish person, it would be inappropriate to make this joke, but there was a funny moment where the security people said, because the security people said, because the person who has left the kilted security, please come back and collected. The whole departure lounge erupted into laughter. As someone lounge erupted into laughter. As someone wandering around without their pants on . If they were wearing a kilt properly i hope whoever it was found that killed. It might be for a wedding or a special occasion or they are wondering around a bit draughty. He used to work with sajid javid. Did you work on the campaign trail . What were you doing for him at this point . Normally, you would go out and accompany them on campaign visit, mostly to marginal seats you would be bringing them to studios such as this to get the morning from people like yourself. Did you give him a pep talk . |j morning from people like yourself. Did you give him a pep talk . Ijust tend to show him on. He would get his lines and stuff and i would scour twitter for people. How are you finding the p world of daily election podcast . It is brutal. It is. I election podcast . It is brutal. It is. Lam election podcast . It is brutal. It is. I am enjoying it. Election podcast . It is brutal. It is. Lam enjoying it. I election podcast . It is brutal. It is. Lam enjoying it. Lam not election podcast . It is brutal. It is. I am enjoying it. I am not bound by the same rules as you are. People can swear. By the same rules as you are. People can swear. We do that. People can save all sorts of things they might not say. I am enjoying that. It is far more fun covering it this way than being in the middle of it. Things like visits. No matter what party you work for, it is the worst thing in the world when it goes wrong. I did one when tony blair did a graffiti removal with a High Pressure nozzle. It was a big and stuff. In your local by elections, this is a big thing. We didnt have a High Pressure nozzle. What we have for this council by election . Lets get a mop and bucket and some cleaning stuff. On the way to the stance, the minister at the time, i am there with his local candidate and it was oii with his local candidate and it was on the way there, i have the mop and bucket but i dont have any water how do i do it without water . Like an idiot, i bought some water and as we we re an idiot, i bought some water and as we were getting near there, i thought, i cant see the media doing this. I kept the water into the bucket and they got a photo of it. There is a labour idiot in a coat pouring water into a bucket. You have obviously got the hand of this election podcasting already. It has moved from one anecdote to what we wa nted moved from one anecdote to what we wanted to talk about, which was borisjohnson wanted to talk about, which was Boris Johnson taking to wanted to talk about, which was borisjohnson taking to the floods with a mop. Lets see how this went. I want you to talk about why you are related will. I will show you a picture. I cant possibly. Related will. I will show you a picture. Icant possibly. Iwill show you some pictures. How many relatives do i have . Relatable to other people. Let me show you these pictures. This is why people think you are not relatable. Have you ever use a mop before . Swishing around the water. That isjust. The thing is. You are not squeezing the mop for a start. I am squeezing now. There you go. Why are you relatable . How can people connect with you . You area how can people connect with you . You are a different background to most of the people in this country. You are privileged. That is fine. You are privileged. That is fine. You are very lucky. I love this country andi are very lucky. I love this country and i want to serve it and i think it is amazing place and if you ask me what i am relatable, i have not the faintest idea. It is a most difficult psychological question. Iam glad difficult psychological question. I am glad we challenged you. Boris johnson, thank you so much for your time. Iam johnson, thank you so much for your time. I am glad we had this interview this morning. Can you believe that is what the payment of the nation is doing . Talking about squeezing mops. This is not what i would have thought. In fairness, when you are the governing party going to an ocean, it is really hard to then create that line between being in the campaign and having to do the things that you have to do, and you are going to try and find a way to merge it, and in that heat of the moment, you make silly decisions like, 0k, the moment, you make silly decisions like, ok, we were putting up there with them and boris does those stunts and antics, he does the plane to the camera bit, so was he ever going to do it in a way that wasnt to be theatrical . Events and elections cannot be coarse, so the flooding has been a problem first and foremost for the poor people have been appallingly affected by this, having their lives turned upside down, what a total nightmare at this time of year. But the Prime Minister who has been twice now to visit the parts of the country where there has been bad flooding and had some heckling and pushback from people, and the accusation is they have done too little, too late. The Opposition Party has jumped have done too little, too late. The Opposition Party hasjumped on the floods and so there should be a national emergency, the government is making this up. Do you think it is making this up. Do you think it isa is making this up. Do you think it is a bit unfair . It is not Boris Johnsons felt that it rained a lot. The local authorities. I think you have to take every opportunity in an Election Campaign. I would not criticise any party on any side for doing that. I would expect the opposition to say this proves the government havent done the job. If you cant take the opportunity when you cant take the opportunity when you have the deficit in the polls that they have, trying to exploit every single story, you are not thinking politically. There is a cynical edge to it. This is a campaign where in those communities, without those floods, people might have been more amenable. The government was late, he didnt care. The mop thing by the way is a gift because he sat there on tv arguing about his mop technique rather than how much has been cut, the effect of his policies, how soon they can help the areas out. The mop thing is great for him. The mop gate is great. It is now a gate i dont know if it has reached that stage. Few more days before it is a gate. These other parts of the country where they hope Boris Johnson can get votes off traditional labour communities. It is interesting, they have been chat this week about his borisjohnson early such have been chat this week about his Boris Johnson early such an appealing person as people thought he was at the tory party . That is why he won the election. People love it. In part of the country the tories dont normally reach. He has quite a hard time on the ground this week. Lets hear some of it. Ok. Now then, we want to know, the money they need and they know they matter. Tell me what im doing. Where have you been the people, they walked in here yesterday. You didnt see that all the little girls with no issues oii all the little girls with no issues on their feet. A 78 year old lady, it is heartbreaking. Is anything in particular you would us to do. Know, thank you. No. And borisjohnson wasnt and Boris Johnson wasnt the and borisjohnson wasnt the only one that has received a bit of heckling this week. Jeremy corbyn had a few in scotland, swenson had some anti austerity protesters at one of her events. Protesting in silence. It is interesting, a labour campaignersaid to me silence. It is interesting, a labour campaigner said to me this morning thank i has Jeremy Corbyn spent two daysin thank i has Jeremy Corbyn spent two days in scotland in they have a tiny amount of mps, this person was my view, it makes sense for them to spend time especially because since he has been out he gave about three different versions of other partys policy is. Did you manage to pin him down on that . I think this is the policy. This is important bit. The policies dont give the s p any firm promises now. Yes, possibly, if the s p gets any majority in the next elections in 2021, they would. At that point. But i dont think that will necessarily happen because the Voting System is different in scotland, it is harder for people to have a majority. The policies basically, yeah, maybe, we might up for it. That is not enough for nicola sturgeon. She wanted next year. If labour and up trying to form a government, as the Biggest Party or whatever, a hung parliament, should they bring the policy forward . They might do. Rewind to the staff about the floods, you have been in some Government Departments where big stuff has happened. Think about it, the Major Incident from the migrants crossing the channel at christmas. Took us through how that sort of thing is handled . How did you decide that was a Major Incident with dumas the reason you call it a Major Incident is to put it up to the bureaucracy so people are paying a lot of attention to it. Your resources a re lot of attention to it. Your resources are finite at the border, so you progress something because you are saying actually pp up my people are posing a danger to themselves primarily and we need to just divert attention. Major incident doesnt transfer into media because 12 people crossing the channel. As it does in turn in those communications. I think that is not the best example of a crisis. I think going back to granville, we had just come out of an Election Campaign where we lost our majority grenfell. Nobody in government is prepared for it. A local authority in this case kensington and chelsea was supposed to be responsible, but you cant, the scale of the tragedy was so enormous that the government had to step in so there was no way of kind of determining what was the right thing to do at any given stage. And i think that is what made it very hard for teresa. She had been shellshocked by this campaign and she went straight into something that was absolutely catastrophic. And i think when Something Like that happens, you have to play it by ear and you have to really be present to what people are saying. One thing i love his numbers. Spending, pledges, things you can actually. Write down, type into giant calculator and add up to an even bigger number. I hope as i even i have got massively confused about who is spending what on what over what period, and basically it sounded like a bit of a cacophony of numbers, really. Have a listen. 1. 2 trillion. £1. 2 trillion. £43,000 not much £20 billion plan. £100 million. £5 billion commitment. £250 billion of investment. Million. £5 billion commitment. £250 billion of investmentlj million. £5 billion commitment. £250 billion of investment. I mean, that is. A jackpot billion of investment. I mean, that is. Ajackpot how did you get inside my brain . That is what it sounds like, doesnt it . What does it mean . Well, it means. This is not an election like the last few where the competition has been about trying to see who is going to spend less, 2017jeremy trying to see who is going to spend less, 2017 Jeremy Corbyn trying to see who is going to spend less, 2017Jeremy Corbyn had trying to see who is going to spend less, 2017 Jeremy Corbyn had already moved that dial on. But if you think about in this big way, for the last ten years or so british politics has been thought of about how you shrink things, and how you prove that you are responsible with money and that you dont spend a penny more than you dont spend a penny more than you need to. That is gone. That has absolutely gone. The tories and the labor party are both promising quite a lot of extra spending. But it is night and day, chalk and cheese, black and white. It is completely different. Labour is promising a giant amount of extra spending and they are really proud of it. The tories are promising a fair debt of extra spending. I think also in all that cacophony, it can be a bit confusing. There is more money, what does it mean . What of those things you think are actually thinking in to the public was not raines . The trillion pound thing, it was the first. The 1. 2. It is quite a lot. That is the one i have heard of more people. Ithink lot. That is the one i have heard of more people. I think that is because it was the biggest number, therefore it was the biggest number, therefore it is the one that sticks in my mind. In generalthe it is the one that sticks in my mind. In general the numbers dont really. People dont believe the politicians will deliver that amount of money and they cant quantify. One of the first things i was taught when i worked for labour was dont give people like the big headline figure. You tell them what it would do in their community. We will cut the waiting time what i weeks, you get an operation in a month or whatever. Class sizes under 30. You break it down to the smallest bit of affect anything they told us was like the mars advert, they dont say this chocolate bar has got loads of sugarin this chocolate bar has got loads of sugar in it. They say it helps you work, rest and play and it is what the product does view that is selling point, not the ingredients on the back. This £1. 2 trillion for some people for some people its like £1. 2 trillion, they are going to get serious about investing in the country. And for other people its like, oh, my god, my taxes are going to go up. And the countryjust divides the same group of people in the same parameters all over again. And i think the tory party has learned from that new labour individualising, because it then translated into £2300 on your tax bill for everybody who pays taxes. So we cant see where it is resonating, that is the problem. You say that, but i got a conservative party press release on e mail this morning and its about helping towns in high street, but it is a list of ten mini measures which dont seem like a lot of money. Im sure it might makea like a lot of money. Im sure it might make a difference but it didnt add up to a convincing story about what they are going to do. But in the local paper, as far as the local paper is concerned, its that same thing, you know . What does it mean for my community . And you got to make it relative. How many zeros are in to make it relative. How many zeros are in 1 trillion . I dont know. Well, you know what 10,000 are in 1 trillion . I dont know. Well, you know what10,000 looks like. Im worried about theirs. No, because i got in trouble on twitter about the difference between an american chilean and a british trillion, i wont get in trouble again american trillion. |j thought you were going to say i didnt want to casually mention it because i would confuse you. Laughter. I would show you my full understanding of the real issue. But the economic stuff, when the two parties talk about the state involvement, right . So nationalisation is. Today, use policy, i think its the most radical policy we have seen so far from either of the parties. The Labour Party Party thing everyone will have freeboa rd Labour Party Party thing everyone will have freeboard band in ten years, freefall fibre broadband and it would cost only 10 billion quid and they would do it by privatising pa rt of and they would do it by privatising part of bt. This is massive staff stop i think it shows us the really genuine, enormous contrast between the two parties approach to the economy. I think i cut through. Labour we do five big nationalisation is, they think it pulls really well. But i think a funny way the tories were taken by surprise by it. Some tories actually think it might even help them get back those nervous tory remainers who may be thinking of going to the lib dems because they want to make that economic case to them. They wa nt that economic case to them. They want to make them feel nervous about the economy ofJeremy Corbyn got into numberten. But the economy ofJeremy Corbyn got into number ten. But if you are a co re into number ten. But if you are a core labour voter, i think that is going to be a big motivator for some of their punters. Nationalisation, labour, even when i worked for them, elements that were hot on nationalisation, they was misunderstood the difference between the punters saying i want the row network to change, its too expensive at network to change, its too expensive et cetera, and a leap it takes to say i want to put Jeremy Corbyn in charge of it. Thats the second question, do you just them to run it . I think the bowling with james and run it . I think the bowling with james and i imagine the polling does. So on the additional problem, andi does. So on the additional problem, and i think that is where Jeremy Corbyn is really strong, when he talks about inequality, thats when he gets people onboard. When he then says the state is going to take over this stuff, they go over. And its ha rd this stuff, they go over. And its hard for them. 2017 definitely post eve ryo ne hard for them. 2017 definitely post everyone afterwards, right . And you are seeing this from the tories spending pledges, they have all shifted that way. So it will boil down to a question of trust, who do you trust . Borisjohnson down to a question of trust, who do you trust . Boris johnson Jeremy Corbyn . We are going to nationalise anything but it isnt dissimilar to the kind of investment the conservatives have been talking about since 2014. When ijoined the government. They talk about this in 2015, it definitely contributed to billion pounds to it at that point. So this is a question of you are right, who do you trust on it, but Jeremy Corbyn has been so successful he has definitely pivoted the conversation to where he is, which makes it much harderfor us to have credibility. Best quote of the whole broadband stories from john mcdonnell, thank stop going back to the 19705, they didnt have broadband in the 19705. The 19705, they didnt have broadband in the 1970s. In the manifesto, they had an idea of having a nationalised telecommunications company, a while back, and interestingly, thatcher privatised bt in 84, that was an unorthodox really radical thing to do. And this would be like a really radical, unorthodox giant thing to do. Its ringing alarm bells were business and they are jumping up for it and looking at this. Five nationalisation is, really . The other good thing about elections a5 we get to spend more time with the party leaders. Which means we get to pick up their little conversational text and presentational text. Pick up their little conversational text and presentational textlj dont know what youre talking about. Matt, you know the impressions. What are the details from the big names . The two really big ones this week was Boris Johnson andjeremy big ones this week was Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn. Your interview withjeremy and Jeremy Corbyn. Your interview with Jeremy Corbyn on the website today. Boris at the start of the burden interview, i dont know if you know, he tries to set up a question of how many questions he was going . Question of how many questions he . Ten, question of how many questions he was going . Ten, 15, lets get on with it. She said right, im in charge. How many have we done . Never mind, and then at the end, its his way at the end of trying to get control over the interview. Saying actually, were going to play by my little rules and im going to have a little rules and im going to have a little game. And his right to change it because as you listen you go hes having fun with this, hes actually enjoying it . And then at the end he tried to check how many hes done. Not one millimetre to play his little game. And the things he does, the greeting. You say, boris, you have lied to everyone about everything. He does know, i know, he will go quiet and runny. No, no, no that fake earnestness. I think this is important. I think it is that the hearts of the uk. And the uk. Laughter. Thats what he does you just want to say answer the question. U, laura kuenssberg, the bbc. He always tries to drag you away. Is like a dog on a lead. For legal reasons you now have to do the same length be imprisoned forJeremy Corbyn. Jeremy corbyn has a way of the issue. The way he said issue is with his chin tucked right in. Highly defensive body language. One eyebrow raised in one permanently down. Hell get his early message out early, his first line is fine. The conservatives have completely mismanaged the National Health service. We think we need a Health Service. We think we need a Health Service that works for everyone. Hell have like a little inflection at the end. Then the second question, the i doubt on labour party is incredible. But what about your own Shadow Health secretary . You see his eyes go. The party would take a view. But what you say to that . We would come to a view in time that would try and persuade all sides. And what he will often do, anything he does in the interview with you on the iplayer today. He will end on a platitude that almost leaves you as an interviewer with nowhere to go. He was Something Like and we are waiting with rated breath. It is your policy, made. You shouldnt be waiting with baited breath, you should know what it is. We all want better broadband, laura, but is it too much to ask for world peace . Yeah, of course its not. I wasnt suggesting you shouldnt want world peace. One of the other stories this week, nigel farage was saying peerages for brexit candidates. Can you imagine lord four hours farage. Now, now, hold on. His voice really enjoys his own voice in a way. And to be fair he has a good voice i give him credit. He does. He has a booming voice. Being absolutely certain of everything. Rank lee, happening, everywhere. And it is, happening everywhere. And he is built for the house of lords. He would energise the place is the sad truth of it. Thanks everyone, and remember you can subscribe and listen to relax and cast on bbc sounds. Electioncast on bbc sounds. Hello. There is a bit more rain in the forecast for this weekend, but hopefully not as much as we had through the week or indeed, as much as weve had through the autumn so far. It looks like some places may well break records, so far this autumn sheffield have recorded over 400 millimetres of rain, just shy of the previous autumn record. Provisional figures suggest that nottingham, with 348 millimetres of rain, mayjust have beaten the previous autumn record rainfall. There is more of autumn to come of course and some showery rain in the forecast for this weekend, but also some spell5 of sunshine. Its quite a complex weather pattern. Low pressure over the near continent, a frontal system pushing in from the west, the two staging something of a pincer movement, bringing areas of cloud and patchy rain in towards our shores. Now, in between theres a zone of clear skies for scotland and Northern Ireland, thats where we are starting the day with a fro5t. And some fog patches acro55 northern scotland, some of which will be quite 5tubborn through the day ahead. Generally, i think we will see a bit more cloud spreading into scotland and Northern Ireland as the day wears on. Eastern and southern scotland seeing some splashes of rain and those grey and damp conditions extend acro55 northern england, down into parts of the midlands. The odd sharp shower for south west of wales down into cornwall, but for the south east of england, well, here a decent chance of seeing some dry weather and even a little bit of sunshine. Another chilly day, but not quite such a windy one as weve been used to lately. Now through saturday night into sunday, 5till these areas of cloud and showery rain around, it will turn a bit cloudier for a good part of scotland and Northern Ireland. Where you do keep clear skies, and some places will, it will turn into a bit of a chilly night. So on sunday, really were just chasing these areas of cloud and showery rain around the map. It looks like two parts of northern england, wales, the south west, people will see cloud and some showers at times. To the south east of that, a fighting chance of seeing at least some dry weather. And for Northern Ireland and scotland, it should turn increasingly break through the day. Its still chilly, 5ingle digit temperatures for most of us. Now, into the start of the new working week, this little ridge of High Pressure is going to try to work its way across the british isles. And that should give a drier and brighter day on monday. This is the day where we do get to dry out. There will be a few showers brought into north sea coastal areas on a brisk, northerly wind, but otherwise its fine. There is some 5un5hine. It stays pretty chilly, 6 10 degrees at best. But as we head deeper into the week, it does turn more unsettled again. We will see further outbreak5 of rain, heaviest in the west. It will be windy, but it will turn a bit milder. Selling point, not the ingredients on the back. Welcome to bbc news. I am james reynolds.
