Well be taking a look at the essential sport item that managed to become an every day fashion must have. From your phone to a postbox, well find out why Old Fashioned postcards still seem to have a future in the digital age and why that could be good for our Mental Health. And a new Study Suggests those long meetings at work are more about therapy than solutions, so we want to know, do you think meetings are meaningless or play an important part of work life . Let us know, just use the hashtag bbcworklife. Hello and welcome to worklife. A warm welcome to our new business show, and we start today in sydney, where we could be seeing the dawn of a new era of ultra long haul commercial flights. I think we can cross straight to luuka jones, if he is still awake you have been awake Something Like i9 you have been awake Something Like 19 or 29 hours . You have been awake Something Like i9 or29 hours . Luke you have been awake Something Like 19 or 29 hours . Lukejones. You have been awake Something Like 19 or 29 hours . Luke jones. And the rest it goes around in with them so i might be awake for another 12 hours. Have you done it with caffeine or booze . What is the strategy for surviving a flight like this . I didnt follow the strategy which is the stupid thing because around me on the flight there were scores of really smug people, who did the food they were meant to, select when they were meant to avoid it like but i had a lot of work to do so it like but i had a lot of work to dosoi it like but i had a lot of work to do so i was beavering away on my la ptop do so i was beavering away on my laptop and requesting as many snacks and coffee as i could i stayed awake all the way through. Every inch of that 19 hour 19 minutes like to put it but you were in Business Class and you did eat steak . Yes, i will plead guilty to that what was your perception of it . Having done it, would you opt for an all in one flight it, would you opt for an all in one flight to sydney or a stopover, if the price was the same . It is all about price. The ceo of qantas group was telling me that if this flight happens, they expect 35 premium, minimum, on the flight that is direct rather than stopping in singapore or perth and if money is no object for you, it is really handy. You get on, have a long snooze and wake up half way round the world. If youre trying to do that route with your mind on your wallet, thats not really possible. They are confident and think they have a great Business Case for it. They are expecting to see a lot of first class passengers, a lot of premium economy and Business Class passengers, that is who they are targeting because when they launched their direct london to perth route recently, that was the Market Growth they have had and they said those flights were 95 full with some of their best routes. They think there was an appetite for it. A remarkably perky luke jones, go was an appetite for it. A remarkably perky lukejones, go and get some sleep its because he is really young with me now is simon calder, travel editor of the independent. I have done something similar, perth to london is only an hour shorter. This is a publicity stunt they carried out in the 1980s, flying near empty plane from london heathrow to sydney but it raises the prospect that we will see these nonstop flights from london to syd ney nonstop flights from london to sydney and qantas really needs that because it has a high cost base. If you want to travel one stop gp from europe to australia, you can do it very economically through the gulf oi very economically through the gulf or china. In orderfor very economically through the gulf or china. In order for qantas very economically through the gulf or china. In orderfor qantas to get some kind of premium, they need to offer Something Different and they are the only game in town. Certainly British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are not British Airways and Virgin Atlantic a re not interested British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are not interested in this. Qantas needs to do this and it thinks to get the premium market sewn up from london to sydney and new york to sydney. Environmentally speaking, surely a long haulflight like sydney. Environmentally speaking, surely a long haul flight like this is worse in terms of Carbon Emissions than stopping so thats going in the wrong direction, isnt it . It most certainly is. Their timing was quite interesting, given the clamour over one change. I was tracking it through the night, i think i had a more comfortable time than luke it flew over the capital of kaza khsta n than luke it flew over the capital of kazakhstan and if ads stop to refuel and also in the philippines, it would have cut the Carbon Emissions and fuel burn by at least a quarter. To be going for something where you know it will be very damaging is an Interesting Development and qantas of course says it offsets all the flights carbon and it is working to become carbon and it is working to become Carbon Neutral by 2050. We will have to see if thats true. Luke will still be young then we saw some pictures while you were talking about some of the medical tests they we re about some of the medical tests they were doing and the passengers looking like they were doing the mac arena around the plane how realistic and useful are some of the scientifical and medical measurement that have been made on the journey to the real life scenario when the plane is full and people are stressed and anxious and not eating stea k stressed and anxious and not eating steak in business . Ive been quite impressed with the way qantas officials have been calling it a Research Flight if they want to Research Flight if they want to Research Real long flight, with a full plate and real people and not enough space to run around and no scientists on board can you look at the person to london flight and the syd ney the person to london flight and the sydney one is about an hour longer. Theyre doing this stuff about pilot fatigue, i can guarantee one thing, when it stops commercially come its not going to take off from heathrow at six in the morning and that kinda questions the value of the experiments but it generates huge for qantas. And of course as travellers we love the idea of stretching horizons and it does that put the stretches the imagination is. Thank you. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news. Amazon has filed an intention to appeal the Us Department of defenses decision to give a Major Contract to microsoft. Amazon had been considered the favourite to win the deal, worth 10 billion over the next ten years. The company said the decision was made due to political pressure. South African Airways has cancelled flights scheduled for friday and saturday because of a strike by staff over pay and planned job cuts. The airline had hoped to avert the walkout, beginning at 0200 gmt on friday, with a revised wage offer, but unions rejected it in talks on thursday. Saa been relying on state bailouts having failed to make a profit since 2011. The pop star taylor swift has said her performance at the upcoming American Music awards is in doubt because she is being barred from performing her own songs. Its part of an ongoing row over the rights to some of her older songs. They were bought by music managers Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta in a 300 million deal earlier this year and swift says they wont allow her to perform those songs. Both of them are yet to respond. Countries including australia, india and new zealand have asked for trade compensation from the uk and the eu over brexit disruption. 15 countries have set out concerns at World Trade Organisation meeting in geneva. Monica miller is in singapore. Talk us through what they have been saying. They have been arguing on behalf of beef and lamb exporters who have already been affected by brexit delays and as you might recall, there have been three so far. One in march, apriland recall, there have been three so far. One in march, april and october and brexit continues to be delayed to prod ahead of each deadline to australia, for example, their businesses stop exporting beef and bmb businesses stop exporting beef and lamb due to wto rules that allow the European Economic bloc a limited amount of Foreign Agricultural goods to come into the European Union at a reduced or zero tariffs. Under the current system, its more profitable for australian farmers to sell beef to europe but brexit is upsetting the apple cart as current quotas are for the entire eu with the uk as pa rt for the entire eu with the uk as part of that. Every time there is a brexit deadline, australian exporters cannot be sure just how much of the product they can sell because its an export. That beef with beef thank you. Protests are under way in hong kong again, european stocks are stuck in neutral and the us and china look to be close to a trade deal. Heres whats moving markets. European stocks are finishing the week about where they started, and its hard to see at this point where the fuel will come from for the next big leg up or down. The europe 600 index is up 20 but investors have been fixated on some big risks with things like brexit, trade disputes, hong kong, slowing growth and money is starting to be pulled out as a result. Now to the us, where shares in canadian marijuana producer Canopy Growth plunged as much as 17 after it reported a poor Financial Results this week. Vivienne nunis is following the story from new york. It has been just over a year since canada legalised cannabis for Recreational Use so, expectations were high for the countrys largest cannabis company, Canopy Growth. Instead, it has disappointed, posting a 375 million loss for the past three months. Investors were not impressed. The compa nys stock was down 14 at the close. It is notjust Canopy Growth that is feeling the pinch. Across the industry, cannabis firms have lost about 40 of their value this year. The problem there is too much pot. While the companies have opened new greenhouses and boosted production of the plant, they say there are not enough retail outlets to sell their cannabis products and they are being undercut by cheaper black market suppliers. Canopy growth is hoping to turn things around with a new range of edibles and cannabis infused drinks set for release in december. Time now for our daily look at some of the newspaper and website stories which have caught our eye. Joining us is steve hogarty, lifestyle journalist for city am. Your debut performance on worklife we will be kind, i promise lets talk about the story you picked up on about bank scams and the possibility that more and more people might be falling victim to this because the industry has not agreed for some form of new standard . This is the news that Asset Protection that were brought in to protect victims Bank Transfer scams are due to run out on the 31st of december. They were brought in to address the rapid growth in this sort of crime. £1 million per day is being transferred into criminal accou nts being transferred into criminal accounts put it specifically do with the kind of bank fraud which a criminal will pretend to be someones bank or even the police and they will instruct them to tra nsfer and they will instruct them to transfer a large amount of money into someone elses account. Do they end up getting their money back, the people who are scammed . Most of them dont because the banks have what they call, theyre working towards a no blame system where they see who is to blame, if the customer did enough to protect their own money in the transfer or not. Where there is no blame, the victims in this who lose their life savings. It is really sad, we will keep an eye on it. It is very sophisticated scams, they can spoof phone numbers so it is not just gullible they can spoof phone numbers so it is notjust gullible people falling for this point you have to be very careful not to give any details i think most banks dont call you up and ask for details over the phone. A story in the Daily Telegraph you plugged up, addiction to shopping is a Mental Illness flagged up. Why is it important that shopping addiction be recognised as a Mental Illness . I think if we can recognise it as such, more can be done to mitigate the negative effects on peoples lives. Currently it is recognised as oracle and other specified impulse control disorder which is related to things like anxiety and depression. It is surely just a Mental Illness as well then or how is it different . Its very difficult to diagnose because i think a lot of us are guilty of buying a lot of things we dont need. I dont know what youre talking about but i think the problem has become exacerbated by the rise of Online Shopping and the fa ct the rise of Online Shopping and the fact that, feeding into all of this, things like one date delivery and thatis things like one date delivery and that is being rolled out across the world by the likes of amazon and one click purchasing, it means that money doesnt feel real until it is gone. It is getting easier and easier to buy things online and were coming up to black friday which is the biggest shopping day of the year and online retailers and the high street are doing everything they can to sell us everything we need for christmas. People can be especially vulnerable at this time of year. was reading around this story on the way in, 20 years ago during cross examination, a high courtjudge heard, and he was right, that elton john was spending on average £2 million a month he suffers seriously from this, he was spending £300,000 on flowers alone and he said, yes, i like flowers that puts my spending into a bit of perspective i thought i was feeling guilty about spinning £20 on amazon thank you so much forjoining us. Still to come. Digital deliveries. Well find out how one company is printing postcard profits despite us all having a smartphone in our pocket. Youre with worklife from bbc news. It sounded like poetry, i will let you watch it back later its less than four weeks until the general election, and one of the big issues in this election is the future of scotland. Aberdeen has been built in recent years on its oil wealth. Many of the offshore supply and support vessels come into the citys harbour and Nina Warhurst has been there this morning. Yes, the oil and gas industry is fundamental to the local economy here. Around 900 businesses are built around it, around 26,000 jobs depend on it. So, to a certain extent, you might think it is slightly ring fenced from what happens in politics but lets find out if that is the case. Good morning, deirdre. You work for the oil and gas association. What are you listening out for over the coming weeks . So, for us it is really important that politicians recognise the importance of this industry, how much it contributes in terms of taxes, the security of energy supply, the 270,000 jobs that it provides. So we need our politicians to recognise the contribution that we make to this economy, to aberdeen, to scotland, to the uk, and that we will continue to make as we go forward. Ok, but they might argue, all the parties in fact are pushing for a move towards sustainable energy, to green energy. Does that put you on the back foot . No, not at all. We are actually really excited about the fact that we are part of a Diverse Energy mix as we move forward and we are going to be key to ensuring that the uk delivers on its net zero ambitions. So, we see a key role as being part of the solution. 0k. For many businesses, they see this as the brexit election. Is it that simple for oil and gas . I dont think its ever that simple so, i think from our point of view, from a brexit context, we have been, like every other sector, we think that a deal is in the best interests of our industry than no deal, and we also look for frictionless access to people and to markets because our concern is about inefficiencies creeping in and costs building up. We have spent a long time in this industry coming out of the downturn, really taking costs out of the business and becoming much more efficient and we need to make sure that that doesnt come back in. Ok, many thanks to you. Lots of the businesses we have been speaking to this morning have not made their mind up in terms of the way they are going to vote and there is stilljust under four weeks to go. More on that and a lot of other stories to do with the election on the website of course. Youre watching worklife. A reminder of our top story, Australian Airline qantas completes a test of its longest nonstop passenger flight. And luke jones and lukejones survived it more from him on our website and through the day on bbc news. Now, lets talk about postcards. He might have sent us one they used to be a holiday staple but lately it been getting a a bad rap. Some find them a bit tacky, whilst others find them a pointless exercise. After all, why bother sending greeting cards when you can just send someone an email . Or upload your picture to social media . I dont agree with that we still do postcard in our family well, a number of companies are now trying to revive the postcard. And one of them is touchnote. Founded in 2008, the firm has an app that lets people turn a photo taken on a phone into a postcard. Its chief executive, dan ziv, joins us now. Many postcards are here to show exa m ples of many postcards are here to show examples of what you guys produce. This one here is that magic picture . Absolutely. Machu picchu. You might go to a shop and buy a postcard but you are in this one and you can get it printed and sent to your friends and family. And touchnote is turning into a creative platform for personal communication but if you think of social media, people have normalised the behaviour of taking their pictures and sharing them with the wider community. What our customers tell us is the way the use of touchnote is to do the same thing as they would with instagram but in real life. They are communicating and nurturing those special relationships in their lives not only on holiday but on everyday moments as well. I have a bunch of free apps on my phone, i rarely pay for them, and i would be able to do something very similar, to mark up a few different pictures can even put some text across it and maybe some stickers and send it via whatsapp, for example, for free. Why stickers and send it via whatsapp, for example, forfree. Why would someone decide to spend money on your app someone decide to spend money on yourapp oryour someone decide to spend money on your app or your membership to do it, essentially the same thing . M you think about the mediums you have to communicate with anybody in your life, there are huge number. You consent whatsapp, e mail, anything you can send could we have found that with those special few people in your life, whether elderly people orare in your life, whether elderly people or are younger people who are not necessarily on social media, friends orfamily from necessarily on social media, friends or family from different countries, sometimes you want to send something that means a touch more. You want to share something for real with them and do it in a way that has longevity, that they can put on the mantelpiece or go back to afterwards. On issues we have with communication right now is people are communication right now is people a re less communication right now is people are less mindful about the meaning of the communication itself. You can ta ke of the communication itself. You can take a nice picture, you walk your dog or something and you share it instantaneously and it vanishes the next second put the beauty of this medium is its longevity and the fact that it helps you nurture those relationships. My parents are back in israel, my son is with me in london and when you go back home and you see his picture all around the house, you can see how that creates a bond and a connection between them. You did this. Yes, we sent postcards, especially to my in laws, and my kids love to write damp and they are at that age when they do, i dont know if they will go out of it natmeg to write them. What are the Mental Health benefits of doing it this way . If you think about the Mental Health benefits and everything we have heard about social media, the anxiety, living your best life, the luke, touchnote is very different to that. People use it for the cards and moments they would not necessarily want to share with the wider community. The beauty is that there is a wealth of research to show that anything from dementia in older people to younger people who might be lonely abroad, this is a way for them to connect and feel closer together. Interesting. Thank you very much. In a moment well look at some responses to our twitter question about meetings and how much we love them. We love them we are always first in the door at bbc meetings and the last out we get there early and eat sandwiches and fall asleep but first, its friday and its time for another one of aarons Million Dollar ideas. If yourre feeling competitive . Youll find these essential if you want to do sport. Socks . Lets take a look. Hey its the sneaker or trainers, as they call them here in britain. They took off when this man right here, charles goodyear, learned how to galvanise rubber. In 192a, two german brothers, adi and rudolf dassler, started making sport shoes in their mums laundry room. They persuaded this american athlete, jesse owens, to wear a pair in the 1936 olympics. He won four gold medals. And their shoes . Well, they became world famous. But then the brothers fell out and adi started adidas and rudolf, he started puma. The brothers spent years trying to outdo each other. Adidas sponsored stars like muhammad ali and puma landed pele. But neither saw nike coming in 1979, nike invented this shoe, with air bubbles in the heel. They called it airjordans. After the basketball legend michaeljordan. And its sales soared past its competitors. And now these Companies Battle in a market worth 13 billion a year. Its a ruthless race and it never ends. No, it never ends. It never ends. At the top of the show, we asked you about meetings. Lets take a look at how some viewers have responded. Marc says i havent attended a worthwhile meeting in years. 5 hours on trains to and from london for a a0 minute waste of time last week. I think you need conference calling alan says. Audrey says. This is one meeting you dont want to miss, worklife every weekday at 8 30am. Have a lovely weekend, a pleasure to have you with us today and enjoy your weekend. Happy friday. Hello there. Yesterday brought disruption for some, there was some snow but we also saw rainfall to areas already suffering with recent flooding. There are a flood warnings are still in place, you can keep across those local to you on the bbc weather website. Now, the culprit for this unsettled weather is this area of low pressure and it is staying with us as we move through the next few days. The through the next few days. Front that because that fizzled the front that because that rent fizzled away through the night, still moving towards the north and west. Today, low pressure is still in charge. This is in this afternoon, sunny spells in northern ireland, scotland, a few showers in eastern areas, wintry of a high ground and brightening after a wet start in Northern England and some brightness for wales and South West England with one or two showers. Elsewhere, a fair amount of cloud in england and outputs of rain feeding in from the south east this afternoon. Nine or 10 degrees and in the cool north easterly breeze, it will take the edge off it. Night, the rain in the east works west, fairly patchy so tonight. The wind will ease, a few patches of mist and fog in northern parts of scotland. Temperature is not falling quite so far. This is saturday, low pressure still in charge, a few weather fronts and we are expecting to see further that she averaged a frame but we have lighter winds put it fairly cloudy for much of england and wales, some outbreaks of rain and wales, some outbreaks of rain and drizzle most brightness in southern areas. Northern ireland and scotla nd southern areas. Northern ireland and scotland have some Early Practice but increasingly cloudy through the day and the chance of some showers. Temperatures similar to today. On sunday, this has the greater chance of some heavier and more persistent rainfall, a little uncertainty in the detail of exactly where it will be but it looks like it could move into parts of Northern England and the east midlands so stay across the forecast. Temperatures at a maximum of eight or 9 degrees. For the start of eight or 9 degrees. For the start of next week, we expect to see a ridge of high pressure, something a bit drier to begin the week but then a return to some wetter conditions. Next week, after a drier start, some more rain, often fairly windy and eventually temperatures will pick up as well. Goodbye. Youre watching bbc news at 9 00am. The headlines. Your questions will be answered with the Prime Minister borisjohnson. Over the next hour he will be taking your questions on anything from brexit, the economy, the nhs and the conservative campaign as a whole. He will be in the studio shortly. Hes there already earlier he reiterated his pledge to get brexit done and unleash the potential of the country. If we can get brexit done, which i hope we can, byjanuary, then we will be able to get on with lifting the living wage by the biggest ever amount and making the biggest ever amount and making the biggest ever amount and making the biggest ever investments in the nhs, which we can all see is so absolutely vital
