I think we might start with the Prime Minister when it comes to people who say they will do things but dont do them. We swiftly moved to South Yorkshire and the floods they have had there. Yes, and yorkshireman like myself have a reputation for calling a spade a spade, calling a spade a shovel. The Prime Minister got a sense of that in South Yorkshire today, didnt he . Well, some people were willing to shake his hand, but some were not, ta ke shake his hand, but some were not, take a look at this. You should have been there saturday morning having a meeting, making sure these people get the help and support, and im sorry your announcement yesterday was a pittance. The flood defences, these need that support, we are expecting rain on thursday, we want to know, they get the money they need, and these people know that they matter. That has not been demonstrated yet. You made a statement that it isnt an emergency. It is an emergency. Prime ministers and leaders of the opposition dont hang around anywhere for very long in a campaign. He swapped South Yorkshire for coventry, and went to a factory that builds electric taxis amongst other things. The striking thing was that he was talking. A bit like labour but we will talk about them later, they wanted to talk about the greatest hits and talk about brexit. Yes, and this was supposed to be one of these big set pieces, but, of course, because news gets in the way, once Boris Johnson course, because news gets in the way, once borisjohnson had done the speech and he opened the floor to questions, those peskyjournalists, including laura kuenssberg, wanted to ask about the warm yorkshire welcome you got. He got. You clearly want to talk about brexit every time you are in front ofa brexit every time you are in front of a microphone but today we have seen voters in yorkshire be very unimpressed by your handling of the floods, and several of your former colleagues who were even conservative ministers suggesting people should think seriously about voting lib dems. Do you think you are in control of this campaign . Thanks. On the floods. Its very important to say that, you know, i have been twice now in a week to see whats happening in South Yorkshire, in derbyshire, in nottinghamshire. I want to pay tribute first to the Emergency Services for everything theyve done, the police, the fire brigade, the army. Last night we sent in 200 light dragoons, who are doing a fantastic job sent in 200 light dragoons, who are doing a fantasticjob in remediating some of the flood defences in the don valley. Ive had a chance to thank them today. My strongest impression is of communities coming together. And helping each other. And i want to thank all of those communities i saw today in stein firth, fishlike, and elsewhere. I think people are really showing the best spirit of this country. I made clear throughout my time there, obviously the government stands ready to support in any way we can. What is it with you and laura . Laura cannot get a microphone into her hand, you could not get your headphones on a couple of minutes ago, a trivial observation about borisjohnson ago, a trivial observation about Boris Johnson standing at that leg turn in coventry, one of our collea g u es turn in coventry, one of our colleagues pointed out that she reckons that the font that is underneath the lectin about getting brexit done is the same font as only falls and horses. Really only fools and horses. I have learned not to comment on fonts after enraging the comic sans community. We are a passionate constituency. the comic sans community. We are a passionate constituency. I know i should have known when i said it. Thats enough of us waffling on about that. What Boris Johnson thats enough of us waffling on about that. What borisjohnson would probably want us to waffle on about is the contents of his speech, which was interesting because he presents himself as optimistic, centrist, kind of father of the nation, and there is this little thing about just getting brexit out of the way, then there is so much good stuff beyond, here is how he put it. Today, the uk boasts more nobel Prize Winners than any other country apart from the us. We dominate the p0p apart from the us. We dominate the pop music charts. I saw the marketing superheroes with british actors playing superman and spider man. Under this government of the dot we have an economy. Laughter im going to take credit for it. Under this government. He cannot ta ke under this government. He cannot take credit for some of that, because the first time a british person became superman was 2011, which was before him. Do you remember him saying that he has a deal up remember him saying that he has a dealup and remember him saying that he has a deal up and ready . Yes, put it on gas level four, kitchen language. Deal up and ready . Yes, put it on gas levelfour, kitchen language. He has also said put it in a pot and just add water. Then he said its like a blue peter brexit deal, its one we made early, to lots of people replied, its made of sticky back plastic . And it falls apart after five minutes . They used to say i uncork the gawk, but that does not work in my scottish accent, so i have to say it in an english accent. Who is david gawk . The independent candidate, or at least one of them, for a constituency where he used to bea for a constituency where he used to be a conservative in hertfordshire. Very late last night, and i know it was late because i was on shift i was late because i was on shift i was about to go home and i refreshed his twitter page and tweet it again not only is he running as an independent. David gauke. Not only will the arrangement be sorted out by next year be unrealistic. He also said it is not in the National Interest to get Boris Johnsons majority. He said the conservatives should not win this election right out for the sake of the country. Its incredible because he used to bea its incredible because he used to be a conservative. Not dissimilar to what ian austin was saying last week when he was saying vote for Boris Johnson. Granted, gauke did not say vote forJeremy Corbyn, but he did say dont vote for the conservatives. And in his own constituency he is asking people not to vote conservative because he wa nts to vote conservative because he wants them to vote for him as one of the independent candidates. There will be a full list of those candidates soon. Itll be interesting to see what happens to those independents and how much they confuse things. Labour wanted it to be all about how they will spend £6,000 a year more than the conservatives. They wanted to look super generous. It did not quite go as planned. Because they have this other idea, which is the idea of having a four day week or 32 hour working week. That is an aspiration over ten years, they say, and it would depend on the economy growing. The big question put to them today, does it include the nhs . Who better to put that question tojohn as hford, to put that question tojohn ashford, john ashworth, to put that question tojohn ashford, john ashworth, dan andrew neil . Why would people want to stay in the nhs when they could have a four day week . To stay in the nhs when they could have a fourday week . All of the hours will be part of the national calculation. The 32 hours averaging wants to get to is a National Average figure. The nhs will be working a lot more. There will be different bargaining going on in different bargaining going on in different sectors. People watching this tonight will only conclude that what you are saying and what John Mcdonnell is saying the very different things. You can never have too much of andrew neil in a general Election Campaign stuffing people up left, right, and centre. Lets hear from alex forsyth. She spends her time away from westminster soaking up time away from westminster soaking up politics from around the uk and she has been out and about with the conservatives this week. We wanted to talk to her particularly around this whole question of alleged islamophobia. Alex, my sense is you are ina islamophobia. Alex, my sense is you are in a car park. How could you know . I am in a car park, on the campaign trail, with a disco wristband, following around the Prime Minister as it happens today. Ina Prime Minister as it happens today. In a sofa undisclosed location in the west midlands. You spend your life on the road, notjust during campaign time. So far undisclosed location. There is some new stuff on islamophobia in the conservative party today. But you have been looking at this for quite a while. Yes, what has come out today is the latest tranche of cases. In this instance, conservative councillors or former councillors who have allegedly posted things on social media ofan allegedly posted things on social media of an islamophobic nature. The party has suspended a batch of them, saying those who are Party Members, we have suspended them, kicked them out, we are taking swift action. But it hasjust out, we are taking swift action. But it has just prompted out, we are taking swift action. But it hasjust prompted this subject again. How did this come to light, both today and when you have been looking over the last few months . Ive been looking at it for a while. A lot of this has been led by the a campaigner a lot of this has been led by the a campaigner mecca a lot of this has been led by the a campaigner mecca by a a lot of this has been led by the a campaigner mecca bya campaigner on this. At times he has come up with batches of individuals who often call themselves conservative Party Members who have been posting things on social media. A lot of this has been led by a twitter campaign. The party did suspend everybody they found to be a member but it feels this conversation, which im sure you both know, has been going on for a while, is the conservative party doing enough to tackle islamophobia . Should there be an independent enquiry . There was that moment in the leadership race where candidates were stood at various podiums. They were sat on stools thats right. Boris johnson blurted out that if he became Prime Minister he would like a proper enquiry into islamophobia. Now it seems the whole thing will be a lot broader. Critics are saying, is that quite what you promised . broader. Critics are saying, is that quite what you promised . I dont know if you blurted it, or he was bounced into it, he will probably go with the latter. It was sajid javid if you cast your mind back to the ivys if you cast your mind back to the joys of the leadership contest, who during one of those debates he said, come on guys, we should do this, we should have an independent enquiry. He bounced to the others into it and they all said yes, completely agree, yes, yes, yes. It appeared that they we re yes, yes, yes. It appeared that they were signed up to it. That was a pretty good borisjohnson impression i wasnt trying to be asi impression i wasnt trying to be as i did it impression i wasnt trying to be asldid iti impression i wasnt trying to be as i did it i thought, im not actually trying to impersonate the Prime Minister, ijust want inject some colour. I can do a better one i wont do it now. Dont tempt me, i quite value myjob. He was kind of bounced into it. Nothing much has happened since then. Now what has happened since then. Now what has happened is people like baroness farsi, she has been campaigning on it for ages, she says there must be an independent enquiry specifically into islamophobia. The Muslim Council of britain say the same. From the party leadership, what we are hearing, they will do a wide enquiry into all forms of prejudice. Thats not good enough for some people. There are comparisons being drawn rightly or wrongly between how labour have approached the anti semitism issue in the early days when Jeremy Corbyn kept saying i condemn racism of all forms. Another rhetoric coming from the conservative party about, you know, we need an enquiry looking at all forms of prejudice and discrimination. There are comparisons about whether that is the right approach for the party to take. Some people say, we think you should be much more specific and look at the issue of islamophobia only. You mentioned baroness farsi, this is what she said about it on the radio this morning. We are four years into these matters being brought to the attention of the party. Three chairman later. Two Prime Ministers later. The fact we are still going on about even having an enquiry and the kind of enquiry we are going to have showsjust how dismissive the party have been on theissue dismissive the party have been on the issue of islamophobia. Lets not forget that the first issue raised by my colleagues and the previous Prime Minister was that there really was no evidence of islamophobia. Well, here we are four years later, dossier after dossier, dozens of dismissed cases, being presented with the most vile evidence of racism within the party at every level from members of parliament all the way down to our ordinary activists. I just the way down to our ordinary activists. Ijust wonder, alex, how this plays, terrible cliche, or how people in that car park normal people in that car park normal people parking their cars, actually feel about this issue. You must wonder how it cuts through. It is undoubtedly a conversation which is happening in certain parts of the conservative party. Baroness warsi has been one of the vocal people on it, but how much that plays out, how big that becomes, its really hard to tell, because today, despite this having come out this morning, despite michael gove being on the today programme being asked about it, the way the day has developed, still lots of focus on flooding, and the nhs, on other policy areas, inevitably brexit. Youve got to wonder how much it will play out in terms of the campaign. I dont think itll go away as an issue for the party because its been around for a while now. Theyve promised that whatever the outcome of the election they will hold an enquiry. There will be a lot of people looking closely at the terms of it, what exactly that means. Its important to say, a lot of the stuff thats come out in the Public Domain about this, its around Party Members, people who call themselves Party Members, in the latest case it is former councillors, candidates, thats the kind of level it is. And the question is whether the party has been robust enough. They say they are. I dont think that will go away anytime soon. We will have to see if it continues to go out during the course of the campaign, if there is any more information of this nature thats come out, and if it comes back again, how borisjohnson chooses to handle it. Thanks, alex, i hope it isnt too cold. Thanks, it is cold. Alex forsyths car park tour will continue for the next four weeks. Weve talked so much about this phrase of the digital doorstep, all of the online campaigning on social media. Ian has been in touch saying come on my Facebook Timeline ive seen zero political ads come on instagram nothing, and nothing on twitter, and nothing on twitter, am i dead . Am ijust nobodys demographic . There could be time. There is still another month. Demographic . There could be time. There is still another monthm could be that some of these ads are aimed at younger voters. Thats ideal because our sister pod cast, known as the next episode, they have done an episode where they have taken some of this incredibly expensive political advertising that is aimed at young voters and shown it to young voters. You will not believe what their reaction was when they saw it. Laughter i shouldnt be laughing but, oh my gosh do we know it who they are trying to reach . If it is young people they might have wasted a bit of money. The words are going way too fast. They are just like random words in an order for no reason. It does feel like it is your first movie that he made at school, when you first start film classes, it is literally a photo slide show, it is like when your phone makes an automatic slide show for you. Chuckles come on what is that . What actually is that . Are you crazy . Are you mad . Laughter it isa laughter it is a bit fast. No music. They are only telling us what other parties are not doing, they are not telling us what they are going to do. That one is definitely a waste of money. They could have just done it as a photo. I dont know why they needed to do photo. I dont know why they needed todoa photo. I dont know why they needed to do a video because it was so unengaging to watch without music. To do a video because it was so unengaging to watch without musiclj feel like this screams youtube intro, i swear. It just feel like this screams youtube intro, i swear. Itjust looks like a kid has done it at school. intro, i swear. Itjust looks like a kid has done it at school. I mean, im not clued up, what is the £50 billion remain bonus . im not clued up, what is the £50 billion remain bonus . I dont know what the bonus is. 50, what . M billion remain bonus . I dont know what the bonus is. 50, what . If cove red what the bonus is. 50, what . If covered up where it says paid by the lib dems, i would not know who that was from. If you want me to vote for someone or something based off an advert, at least tell me who you are. I have watched that three times, i have no idea what most of them were saying. Chuckles im sorry. Thats a joke. Laughter i cant take it seriously i shouldnt be laughing, but, oh my gosh blimey stop face palm. They area tough gosh blimey stop face palm. They are a tough audience. But that is what is interesting. Going back to the digital doorstep, that is how stuff is being consumed. It isnt about billboards or knocking out doors. Wait until you knock on their doors chuckles i know but you can hear and see much more of this stuff on the next episode, our sister pod cast, at bbc sounds. The app is your spot for finding that episode. Talking of tough crowds, we have some fanmail here. Is adam fleming under the impression that he is funny . His woefully un amusing performance is about as funny as a blister. And twice as irritating. Epic fail as my gd would say. What does that mean . Granddaughter, i think. Gd would say. What does that mean . Granddaughter, ithink. Thanks gd would say. What does that mean . Granddaughter, i think. Thanks for sending that, mum. Chuckles we have a public apology to make before we go. We dont shy away from these things. Are a grovelling public apology. Yesterday, on the programme, we referred to a National Treasure who presents on bbc radio two as this. Sorry. We are really sorry, we know that your name isnt jerem vince, we know that its jeremy vince. Really sorry. And also very sorry to donald dimblebum. Chuckles we will be back tomorrow night, 9 30pm. Not with electioncast, but the original and best, brexitcast. Good night. Its not actually that late, is it . Blue skies offered some respite from the recent rain across many areas of the recent rain across many areas of the uk on wednesday. Many places remained dry and we had crisp autumn sunshine, but it wasnt for all. Down towards the south west of england and wales the skies are clouded over and we saw showers ahead of a band of rain thats been moving in. You can see it clearly here. It is connected to an area of low pressure that has been moving in from the atlantic. Associated with this area of rain are some gusty winds for the far south west of england. Heading through this evening, we are seeing snow over the Higher Ground of wales and dartmoor. This band of rain working north and westwards as the night goes on. To the north, lengthy, clearskies, still some showers feeding in, and across parts of eastern scotland the risk of ice first thing thursday morning as temperatures drop below freezing once again. It should not be as cold the further south you come. That rain is still with us first thing thursday morning, stretching out of south west england, wales, the midlands, and across to east anglia. It is heavy, persistent, slow moving, and itll pivot throughout the day. Places like gloucestershire could see a lot of rainfall. The risk is itll move into areas that have seen recent flooding. To the south of that, sharp showers, to the north of it, some brightness, but a brisk wind, which will make it feel cold, feeding on those showers, as well. And wherever you are, it be chilly with temperatures below average for the time of year, amid single at best. Through thursday evening, our band of rain starts to work its way further north, and as it does so itll lose some of its momentum and fragment a little. Through friday, it may produce snow over the Higher Ground of Northern England before gradually working down towards the south west. Around that area of low pressure, further spells of rain at times, which may become more persistent and heavy across east anglia and the far south east late on in the day. Another cold day. And low pressure remains in charge as we head into the weekend. While there will be some dry intervals at times itll be cold. There will be spells of rain. And at times itll be quite breezy, too.
