Im dumbfounded that this government wont release the report about russian influence, because every person who votes in this country deserves to see that report before your election happens. Coming up after 09. 15 and all day on bbc news as part of our general election series, we take a close look at the town of Bishop Auckland finding out why its notjust brexit butjobs, crime and the decline of the high street that are among the big issues for voters. And coming up in sport Raheem Sterling is dropped by england after being involved in an altercation with liverpoolsjoe gomez at theirtraining camp, a day after they clashed in the premier league. Good morning, and welcome to the bbc news at nine. From serious breathing problems linked to e cigarettes. Ewan fisher was connected to an artificial lung to keep him alive after his own lungs failed and he couldnt breathe. Doctors have told bbc news that the case is not an isolated incident, with one warning young people should never go near vaping. Public Health Experts maintain that using e cigaretts is still better than smoking. Heres our Health Correspondent james gallagher. Ewan fisher is a keen boxer, but vaping left him fighting for his life. He was 16 when he first used e cigarettes. Getting hold of them was easy, despite being underage. But, around four months later, he started finding it hard to breathe. Something in the e cigarette vapour was causing a catastrophic immune reaction in his lungs called hypersensitivity pneumonitis. His lungs were failing fast, and he rapidly ended up in intensive care. Doctors had to connect ewans blood vessels to an artificial lung in order to keep him alive. It worked, but ewans recovery has been slow. I urge everyone not to vape, because i dont want them to end up how i have been. I dont wish it on anyone, not even my worst enemies. Around 3. 6 Million People in the uk vape. Severe reactions like ewans are rare, but doctors told the bbc his is not an isolated case. So how safe is vaping . Its a difficult question, because on the one hand, nobody who doesnt smoke should consider vaping, in my view. It would be madness. But somebody who already smokes should switch. So, where young people are taking up vaping as an alternative to smoking, despite the bad experience that this particular young man has had, i would endorse that. Ewan says he is back to 80 of his former self, and wants to go into accountancy. His experience is a reminder that vaping is not completely safe. Professor matin mckee, professor of European Public health at the London School of hygiene and tropical medicine is here. Great to have you with us to give some context to this. People will be very shocked by that story, it was a catastrophic experience for that young man, how common is that reaction . Very rare, however there are growing concerns about the many other effective electronic cigarettes. We have had the epidemic of vaping related illnesses in the united states, cannabis has played some part in bed possibly becoming more concerned that these are in lungs already compromised by the use of ordinary cigarettes. The research coming out from Laboratory Studies has been pointing to a much longer term effect on the cardiovascular system, the heart, blood vessels and the lungs and we are learning a lot more about the role of nicotine itself, for example, not just more about the role of nicotine itself, for example, notjust in promoting the growth of cancers that are already there, but some recent work that has suggested that whenever nicotine is inhaled deeply into the lungs, as it is with electronic cigarettes, it is metabolised in a different way and that may be dangerous too. Nicotine is an issue, but the other mechanics of vaping had implicate have implications we might not have been aware of. Tell us about the science of vaping and the concerns . The main concern is about the flavourings, england is a complete outlier in being supportive of vaping, the world health organization, the European Respiratory Society and other organisations are much more sceptical than the small group of organisations in england. What they are particularly concerned about is the flavourings. The argument in england is that the flavourings are regulated, as Food Additives they are, but when we take things into oui are, but when we take things into our mouth and intestines they are metabolised in the liver and it is only after they have gone through the liver that they get into the rest of the circulation. When they are inhaled through the lungs they go straight in, and that is where the problem seems to live. Few people would have a problem with potentially powder on their food and eating it, you would not want to inhale it, as an analogy. Given that, there are questions about particularly young people, it seems, is that because they would have a system that is not so well formed, oi system that is not so well formed, or do you think we should be concerned across the boa rd 7 or do you think we should be concerned across the board . I think we should be concerned across the board, we should be concerned acrosstheboard, but there are lots of concerns about the components of allergenic cigarettes and there is such a wide ranging flavours that we know very little about them individually, we know less about what happens when they are heated together and possibly combined, there is some evidence that is a concern, and with the recent animal study which showed a clear link with the development of lung and bladder cancers it seems that some of the projects may be metabolised slightly differently, so we just really dont know. You mention the figure quoted about e cigarettes being 95 safer than normal cigarettes, you would say that is disingenuous . than normal cigarettes, you would say that is disingenuous . I dont think anybody outside england takes that seriously. This is from Public Health england . Yes, full together nearly five years ago at a time when we knew very little about electronic cigarettes. The authors of the paper on which it is based, although Public Health england have said they agree with it, but the fundamental starting point was a paper in which a group of people, many of whom were known to be supporters of allergenic cigarettes, came up with this figure, not on the basis of Scientific Evidence that on their opinion, and they conceded that they had no evidence to go on. It has been repeated endlessly since then despite all of the evidence coming out suggesting that is not the case. The position that many people internationally feel is that Public Health england and day few other groups in england have put this figure out, they are wedded to it and it is very difficult to rollback. People will think they had done the right thing, they have moved away from traditional cigarettes, they are vaping, it must be better for them, what cigarettes, they are vaping, it must be betterfor them, what is cigarettes, they are vaping, it must be better for them, what is your advice . If you are going to move entirely from cigarettes to electronic cigarettes, it probably isa electronic cigarettes, it probably is a bit safer, but we really dont know how much, not 95 a. The real danger is using both together, you get the nicotine from both, you get the tar from cigarettes, get the nicotine from both, you get the tarfrom cigarettes, the flavourings from electronic cigarettes, that is worse than having one or the other. Thank you for your input, professor martin mckee. A vast area of australias east coast including sydney is bracing itself for one of the nations worst ever bushfire threats. More than 50 blazes are burning across the state of New South Wales ahead of predicted catastrophic conditions later today. Phil mercer reports. 3000 firefighters in New South Wales are preparing for what officials have said is the most intense bushfire week the state has ever seen. In the sky, water bombers are providing much needed support. For the first time, sydney is facing the highest fire threat warning. A similar alert has been issued for other Populated Areas. Much of eastern australia is on edge. This is Wisemans Ferry on the Hawkesbury River on the outskirts of sydney. It is part of a vast area now subject to a catastrophic fire warning. The area here is full of smoke. It is a very hot day in the wind is gusty as well. Some residents have heeded the authorities advised to leave this bushfire prone region. Others have decided to stay. As far as local firefighters are concerned, their emergency preparations continue. The forecast for the remainder the day is not good and the danger will continue. The fear is that in such dry conditions, new fires could start easily and spread quickly. There are dozens of blazes in New South Wales, many are burning out of control. To the north, parts of queensland are also in flames. Australia is well used to natures extremes but this fire emergency is unprecedented. And phil mercer has sent us this update in the last hour. There have been fired in the suburbs of sydney. These places are about a 30 minute drive from the Sydney Opera House and they came perilously close to homes. A very swift firefighting effort has managed to contain these outbreaks and pink substance you can see on the road and the roofs of these properties is fire retardant. So the flames are very fierce for a brief period before the Emergency Services arrived. You can smell the smoke in the air, you can hear the fire engines and you can hear the helicopters in the skies as well. Eastern australia remains in the grip of this fire emergency. In New South Wales there are 3000 firefighters preparing for the onslaught. Catastrophic conditions have been forecast for sydney, also for Populated Areas to the north, to the south and to the west. This is an unprecedented fire crisis in eastern australia spanning two states, and the authorities are warning that tonight could be extremely dangerous but, mercifully for firefighters and residents, conditions are expected to ease tomorrow. Phil mercer, bbc news, sydney. The Prime Minister is to chair an emergency meeting this afternoon to discuss how the government has responded to flooding in the north of england and the midlands. 38 flood warnings remain in place on the river don in South Yorkshire and five severe warnings meaning theres a danger to life. Residents of fishlake have been asked to evacuate by doncaster council. 400 homes have been flooded and more than 1000 properties evacuated in the region. Travel disruptions continue, with trains being diverted from doncaster and reduced services between there and sheffield. Our reporter ben ando has more. During the night, more water was pumped away. The forecast today is for the rain to ease, a possible respite for those in afflicted areas such as the village of fishlake on the river don in South Yorkshire. Dozens of flood warnings remain in place, several of them severe meaning there is a threat to life. Later, borisjohnson will chair a meeting of the governments emergency committee. The cobra meeting will discuss the ongoing response to the floods. £2. 6 billion is being spent for flood defences in a six year scheme that started in 2015. Labour accused the government of not doing enough to help people in flooded areas. Jeremy corbyn said in a letter to the Prime Minister that if the floods were in surrey rather than yorkshire and the midlands it was far more likely a National Emergency would have been declared. The liberal democrats say they will use government borrowing to create a £5 billion fund to support council and Community Flood defence schemes. The former us president ial candidate and first Lady Hillary Clinton has critisised the uk government for not publishing a government report into russian influence on the 2016 referendum. Shes told the bbc that it was inexplicable and shameful not to release the report. I find it inexplicable that your government will not release a government report about russian influence. Every person who votes in this country deserves to see that report before your election happens. That should be an absolute condition. And you can hear more of that interview with the bbcs Mishal Hussein later this hour. The headlines. Doctors in nottingham say a teenager almost died after vaping caused a catastrophic reaction in his lungs. More on all of the stories thatjust after 9 30am. Theres a month to go until the general election on the 12th december, and nigel farage has ditched plans to take on the tories. After his offer of an electoral pact was turned down by Boris Johnson, the Brexit Party Leader said he would not field candidates in seats won by the conservatives at the last election. Meanwhile, labour is promising an extra three billion pounds a year to offer adults in england free access to education and training. It would offer them up to six years of training in an attempt to tackle skills shortages. The liberal democrats have proposed a £10,000 skills wallet for every adult to Access Training throughout their life. £4,000 would be added to the wallet at 25, 3000 at 40, and 3000 again at 55. And they have announced a 5 billion p and they have announced a 5 billion p fund for investment in flood defences. Lets speak to our assistant Political Editor norman smith in westminster. Westminster digester in that big climb down by nigel farage yesterday, saying he will pull out Brexit Party Candidates from all tory held seats. This morning he was doing the rounds and was slightly more defiant than the rather contrite, humble figure yesterday, insisting he will put Brexit Party Candidates in every other seat despite pleas from leading tories for mr farage to back off, fearful that if he stands in marginal seats then it could scupper Boris Johnsons chance marginal seats then it could scupper borisjohnsons chance of picking them up and securing a majority, paving the way for another Hung Parliament and maybe a brexit referendum. Mr farage turned the ta bles referendum. Mr farage turned the tables on Boris Johnson referendum. Mr farage turned the tables on borisjohnson a bit today and said it was up to him to stand down in some seats. This is almost comical, isnt it . Ive just gifted the conservative party nearly two dozen seats, andl did it because i believe in leave. Now, if they believed in leave, what they would do is stand aside in some seats in labour areas where the conservative party have not won for 100 years, and will never win. I think what youre seeing from this reaction is for the conservative party its about them as a party, not about delivering brexit. So im very disappointed, though perhaps not surprised. Meanwhile, labour and the opposition parties have seized on the alliance, if you want to call it that, between nigel farage and the tories to say they are the same, they both believe in the same thing and borisjohnson has turned the tories into the brexit party. Meanwhile, labourare setting up proposals for lifelong aduu setting up proposals for lifelong adult learning. This is a scheme which would enable adults who have not got a levels or equivalent qualifications to return to college to retrain or, if they are made redundant, try to acquire new skills are forfree, no redundant, try to acquire new skills are for free, no charge. Those on low incomes would also be eligible for maintenance grants. This is the shadow education secretary Angela Rayner setting out the proposal. We need a transformation in schools in this country. We know there hasnt been enough investment. Other parties are catching up now, so we need to make sure we put our money into adult skills so theres Free Education up to a level for all adults in the uk, you can go back and get those qualifications, and also levels four to six, just below postgrad, that people can get up to six years of credit to ensure that they can get those qualifications as well. This will transform our economy for the future. The industrialjobs we want to put on board, the green agenda, the green deal weve got, means that weve got to skill our people up to do those jobs. What are tee johnson what are teejohnson up to . Boris johnson is holding the cobra meeting to address the issue of the floods this afternoon. More broadly they are wanting to keep up the pressure on labour over money, suggesting the labour proposals would result in significant tax increases. They have come in to pressure following the comments we spoke about earlier by Hillary Clinton, the former us president ial contender, calling on the tory party to publish that report into russian interference in elections, describing its non publication is inexplicable and shameful. This morning the chief said, richey sooner, denied the reason that the report had not been published was because it contains information of wealthy russian donors giving cash to the tory party. I cant comment on leaked reports from a classified document all donations to the conservative party, they follow the proper rules, they are disclosed and transparent, as you would expect. When it comes to russia, people should be asking who will make sure britain is safe and standing up for britains interest. We saw a russian attack on out interest. We saw a russian attack on our soil not that long ago, we from the british conservative government and we saw the response from Jeremy Corbyn, that is clear. Thank you for talking is to some other things grabbing the headlines, norman. There is lots of argy bargy about figures and the detail because we have not had the manifestos. Tell us about the timing and significance of that . It matters because what is going on at the moment is the conservative party is compiling figures of how much they think labour will spend and how much labour will spend and how much labour will spend and how much labour will have to tax, based on, blu ntly, labour will have to tax, based on, bluntly, guesstimates, assessments of what they think labour will do, but the problem is we do not have the manifesto, we do not have a hard policy so we can look at what they are proposing and then cost it. It is slightly fa ntasyland, are proposing and then cost it. It is slightly fantasyland, not based on anything concrete at the moment. For that, we will have to wait for the manifestos, and i think the rough guidance labour might well produce their manifesto next week. I asked to issue sooner when the tories would produce their manifesto and so far no Smoke Signals but lots of rumour that it could be quite late on in this campaign i asked rishi sunak this morning. But that is what we are now waiting for. Good to speak to you as always, thank you. Throughout the campaign, bbc news will be looking closely at the places where the election could be won and lost. We will be visiting 10 parts of the uk where seats will be closely contested. Today, were focussing on Bishop Auckland, which is in the north east of england. This seat was labour in the last election and is bordered by three other labour constituencies, plus one conservative and one independent. Its worth noting that the independent seat of penrith and the borders was held by the former tory mp rory stewart. He was a conservative when he won by almost 16,000 votes. Hes now stood down, so its one to watch. Bishop auckland itself, the labour incumbent only won by 502 votes in the last election. So can labour retain the seat . The conservatives came second in the last election and with just a few hundred votes in it have targeted the seat. Graham satchell has been to Bishop Auckland to find out more. Has the election sparked into life for you . At this factory, they make washing machines, water coolers, dehumidifiers. The boss here, john elliott, says all the old certainties have gone. We are in a different time, we are in a totally different time. People are much more about the issues and the fundamentals than party politics. An issue that changed everything for some. That would be brexit. All my life i voted labour and its time to change, its time to change. This country should go and move on now and i think the conservative party is the party to do it. Will other dyed in the wool labour voters really vote for tory . Repairs engineer Michael Hodgin has always voted labour and will do so again. Is brexit the most important thing to you . Not really, no keeping myjob and Everything Else is important to me. Bishop auckland has been labour since 1935, but the majority is just 502. This is a key conservative target seat. Now the brexit party has announced itll stand candidates in labour leave seats like this, what impact will that have . I will vote brexit first and tory second but nearer the time, i dont want to split the tory vote. Its important we get brexit done. Among the empty shop fronts on the high street, we found notjust labour voters ready to switch, but unhappy conservatives as well. Im going to be voting liberal democrat, which isnt usually how i usually would have voted, but im really at the end of my tether with this brexit, the things that have been going on in parliament are quite distressing, the way that the tory party has acted, and i was a member of the tory party. I certainly will not be voting for them this time. Most of the Bishop Auckland constituency is rural farmland and traditional tory voting country, but some voters like William Maughan are also uncertain at this election what to do. The hesitation, the worry, is again because of brexit. Will farmers be able to compete if new trade deals means there is an increase in cheap food imported from abroad . If we can guarantee the products coming are to the same standard, thats puts us on a more level playing field. Its how these products are produced. Do you feel those guarantees are there . No. Brexit has fractured Traditional Party allegiances and here, it feels like a world turned upside down. Graham satchell, bbc news, Bishop Auckland. And well be reporting from Bishop Auckland for more updates through the day. Its reported this morning that a review of the new High Speed Rail Service hs2, says that project should go ahead despite ballooning costs and a drop in benefit for the taxpayers. This latest report coming from the times newspaper. Our transport correspondent tom burridge is here to get to the bottom of this. You spoke to a source yesterday he said things along the same lines . There are a few basic things to point out. In theory this review is ongoing, or at least has not been made public, we now know that whatever government, whatever party wins the election, will not publish the results of this review until after the election. I spoke to a member of the governments review panel, basically, which had connections in the summer, an independent review, as it calls it, that member of the review panel confirmed what the times is broadly reporting, the main headline at least, that this review will recommend that hs2 should go ahead, broadly in the same capacity. It is a recommendation, not hard and fast, not the review saying it goes ahead and that is it, whatever party wins the election has to make a decision on that. My source said that the broad recommendation was hs2 should go ahead from the review, but perhaps it should be tinkered with, there should be recommendations from there should be recommendations from the review over potentially dropping the review over potentially dropping the number of trains per hour, lowering the speed of the trains. That sounds like boring detail but it is not, you can save money, not a huge amount, with those alterations, but ultimately the big question about hs2, is it good value for money, good value for taxpayers money . People will remember that it emerged in the summer that ministers knew years ago and hs2 new years ago that the budget was going up by a significant amount, and the times has also reported this morning, i have spoken to multiple sources recently that suggest this could be the case, the new figure of £88 billion for hs2 could go higher. The budget could be beyond that. Whoever wins the election has to make a different turn difficult decision. Thank you, tom burridge. Letsjoinjoanna lets join Joanna Gosling to lets joinJoanna Gosling to find letsjoinJoanna Gosling to find out what is coming up in the Victoria Derbyshire programme. Hello, this is bbc news with rachel schofield. The headlines. A teenager who almost died after using e cigarettes has urged people not to take up vaping. Doctors say he suffered a catastrophic reaction in his lungs. As bushfires continue to rage in eastern australia officials have warned residents that conditions are expected to worsen today amidst a week long state of emergency. In the Election Campaign labour has promised a 3 billion pound increase in Adult Education investment to help update skills for work. Hillary clinton has told the bbc that its inexplicable and shameful the uk government hasnt published a report on alleged russian interference in british politics time now for the morning briefing, where we bring you up to speed on the stories people are watching, reading and sharing. In a moment we will be speaking to our reporterjoe tidy, whos looking at how digital and social media platforms are being used during the Campaign First though, lets take a look at the stories that are capturing your attention this morning. One of the most read stories on the bbc news website today, is the case of ewan fisher, the teenage boy who says he almost died after vaping caused a catastrophic reaction in his lungs. His doctors say vaping is not safe, although Health Bodies in the uk insist it is 95 per cent safer than tobacco. Ewans battled his way back to health, but now wants to warn others of the potential dangers of vaping as he told dan walker on bbc breakfast this morning. If you are vaping, please stop, and i dont want anybody, i dont wish it upon anybody to be in the situation i was in, it doesntjust ruin you, it ruins yourfamily. Situation i was in, it doesntjust ruin you, it ruins your family. What sort of impact has it had on you and yourfamily . Sort of impact has it had on you and your family . Its had a big impact on us, i missed out on a bit of my childhood, my gcse exams, luckily i got to reset maths and english. And my family got to reset maths and english. And myfamily in got to reset maths and english. And my family in general, thinking they had to see everything that happened to me, i cant remember it but it must have messed with their heads mentally because theyve seen me practically dead. You and fisher. Theres still plenty of interest in Nigel Farages decision, to withdraw Brexit Party Candidates from more than 300 constituencies at the election. Its one of the most read stories on the bbc news website this morning and it dominates the front pages. The sun goes with a front page photo of Boris Johnson raising a pint. Cheers nige says the sun, adding now help us beat labour by pulling out of every seat. farage retreats from every tory seat is the headline in the telegraph, adding that bookies have slashed the odds of a tory majority as a result. The paper suggests that mr farage is under pressure from senior Party Figures and donors to go further and withdraw candidates from other key marginals. The same story is on lots of the news websites this morning. The Huffington Post warns that what it calls mr farages humiliating u turn could be a taste of things to come. It says many in the party believe that by thursday, he will have had to back down even further. Very much a question of watch this space. As promised, our reporter joe tidyjoins me now. During the run up to the election, hell be looking in detail at how digital and social media platforms are being used as part of political campaigns. So lots going in the digital electionjoe. The big election news, as weve just been talking about, is the farage announcement how is that playing out online . Big news in the political world and on social media, its been trending since yesterday afternoon, no sign of slowing down, the hashtag associated with that seems to be all over twitter and on facebook, this is the sort of thing we are seeing the labour party and the lib dems seize upon, the sort of posts doing really well on facebook, these people would sell their own granny 01 people would sell their own granny or indeed the nhs, referring to the potential trump Conspiracy Theory going around. Weve also seen some fa ke going around. Weve also seen some fake accounts, i want to bring them to you but i havent been able or had time to phone them up and see if they are fake, reports that i am a candidate, standing for such and such a seat, nigel farage owes me £10,000, i dont know if they are real, we have to find out. But this is an image from the brexit party website. The url of this is boris brexit deal. , and until late last week this was the top searched ad result. If you were to search boris brexit deal on google, the brexit party were paying for this to be the top result, that website is still alive, that could be a problem for the brexit party, look at the language, the Prime Ministers deal is not proper brexit, of course that might have to change. Its rather been superseded by this. This is a case of the Election Campaign moving so case of the Election Campaign moving so fast that perhaps the digital election teams, the Campaign Teams in brexit party hq may be havent caught up yet. Really interesting. You been looking at the as closely as well, whats happening . The resource facebook ad library, we are monitoring which ads are going out which people, and where they are targeted, the lib dems have a crazy amount of ads, 1400 active ads at the moment, when more than any other party, the labour party only have five running at the moment, these are all targeted to very small pockets of communities, usually Younger Voters as well. They will follow a similar style, they are all very well designed, very slick and if you look at the labour party, they have adverts for them to stop full of the same sort of pattern, very formal, there you go, very formal and branded, if you like, across the spectrum but what we are seeing in the conservatives is a bit more freewheeling approach, theyve got a new ad, an attack ad which came up yesterday, this is on the £1. 2 trillion figure they have said thejeremy £1. 2 trillion figure they have said the Jeremy Corbyn £1. 2 trillion figure they have said theJeremy Corbyn government will cost. And interestingly, this has been put up despite it being debunked by many different organisations including the Fact Checking Organisation Full factory set many of the figures behind this estimate are uncertain or based on flawed assumptions and our team at reality check came to the same conclusion as well. I know Victoria Derbyshire has an interesting story coming up in the next hour about so called deep effects, weve been using and seeing similar experiments, lets look at what a Campaign Group have done with this. Im here with a very special message. If you want to ad lib. If you in there. Only heat not i can make britain great again. That was a good one. I think we are good with that. What do you think is going to happen . This is a group called future advocacy. They have hired bill posters, the famous digital artist who made the marks soderbergh deep effects, that was him saying in the deep fake i control billions of people stolen data. And theyve done this for Boris Johnson people stolen data. And theyve done this for borisjohnson and theyve done this forJeremy Corbyn. Its easy to make defects and easy to deceive people who are watching them. When you watch the videos back them. When you watch the videos back the borisjohnson them. When you watch the videos back the Boris Johnson one them. When you watch the videos back the borisjohnson one is perhaps better than the Jeremy Corbyn the borisjohnson one is perhaps better than theJeremy Corbyn one perhaps because the person whos been hard to do the voice is better at doing borisjohnson but whats interesting, a lot of chat on twitter about this. Actually, the problem here is people come up and they look at these videos on social media or on their phones, its very small screen, quite often without sound, so in that instance, in that sense, its very convincing. Quick glance and you think, yeah, yeah. And this has major implications Going Forward and thats what theyve done this, to highlight during this Election Campaign that deep effects are a major issue and they hope whichever government gets in will take action. Very interesting experiment, thank you for bringing us up to speed. Lets show you alongside whatjoe tyrie has been saying, some of the things catching your attention on the website and app. The most red, we have been talking about the young man, who said vaping nearly killed me. Number eight, nigel farage are urged to give the tories a free run, weve been covering that a lot but at the top, pull and reacting angrily to netflix nazi documentary, interesting case, the polish Prime Minister has written to netflix after the devil next door, documentary they are running seemed to suggest there were concentration camps set up by pull and essentially, the use of maps, he said in that documentary had been misleading because they looked like the camps were within modern day poland borders but he made the point of course they were under the control of the nazi regime and nothing to do with occupied poland at the time. And at the time Hillary Clinton and at two. Hillary clinton, lots about this, the fact that the former do my former first lady has said she would like to see the uk government published that report into alleged russian interference, she says it inexplicable and shameful and said i think she was dumbfounded it had not been released by the government ahead of the election. Thats capturing your attention. Lets look at the most watched. Number one, i was detained for speaking spanish in the us. Lets bring that up, the case of a young woman and her friend, both us born citizens from el paso in texas. But who found themselves on the wrong side of the law when they were detained in montana for speaking spanish. They we re montana for speaking spanish. They were so horrified by the fact that they felt they had been unreasonably detained they have brought a lawsuit against us customs and Border Protection but as a result they say it has made their lives almost unbearable because theyve had so much harassment and one of the women concerned has moved back to a parcel in texas for the time being. On leaving you with this, number six, great video, people loving this, little robots who have been made by the Massachusetts Institute of technology. Lets see, there they go. Nine robots on four legs, they weigh about nine kilos each and youve got to see they play football. They do backflips, this is the best bit, i am hoping we are going to see this. Look, playing football. They are there for Research Purposes but the hope is when they fine tune them they will be able to go, look at that i will be able to go, look at that i will be able to go, look at that i will be able to go into risky situations, the only thing i thought about that if youve seen black mirror, metal head,it if youve seen black mirror, metal head, it was slightly triggering me, look and you will see what i mean, very similar. Some rather more sinister little pots in that programme but worth a look. Another quick piece of breaking news. The financial times, we are hearing that Lionel Barber has stood down as the editor. As you can see, the new editor. As you can see, the new editor appointed. I think we are right in saying the first female editorfor right in saying the first female editor for the financial times. That news just coming editor for the financial times. That newsjust coming in. A new editor for the financial times. There we are, that gives you a flavour. Thats it for todays morning briefing. Sport now and time for a full round up from the bbc sport centre. Here is sally nugent. Good morning. Lets start with a surprise from the england camp overnight Raheem Sterling has been dropped from their euro 2020 qualifier against montenegro on thursday after a bust up withjoe gomez. It happened at the England Training camp, afterthe pair squared up at the end of Liverpools Premier League win over Manchester City. Our Football Correspondent isjohn murray. Really big surprise this, can you tell us what happened between these players . I think its going to be interesting at St Georges Park, its an official England Media day and in about an hour all of the cameras and the tv crews and the media will be allowed in to watch 15 minutes of training. I wouldnt be at all surprised if there were pictures ofjoe gomez and Raheem Sterling laughing and joking together but it sounds as though briefly, yesterday, at St Georges Park, it was quite serious. The fa Statement Released says it was a disturbance in a private team area at St Georges Park, the england squad base. As far as we know and Raheem Sterling himself has confirmed in a social media post, he andi confirmed in a social media post, he and i quote had words with liverpool isjoe gomez. And i quote had words with liverpool is joe gomez. Remember, and i quote had words with liverpool isjoe gomez. Remember, this was the day after the teams met at anfield on sunday, the two of them squaring up on sunday, the two of them squaring up late on in the match after gomez came on as a substitute. And Raheem Sterling said the pair have again and courting him, figured things out and courting him, figured things out and moved on. It was a 5 10 second thing, he says it is done, they move forward , thing, he says it is done, they move forward, they are good and that it should not be made bigger than it is. At the fa and Gareth Southgate clearly taking swift action by deciding not to consider him, Raheem Sterling, or thirsty s match against montenegro although he will remain with the squad. No action as far as we know taken againstjoe gomez which probably tells its own story about exactly what happened. John, its fascinating, we are getting a little bit more of an insight into the situation than we maybe have done when this has happened previously between players . How rare is it for an altercation like this to be made so public . |j like this to be made so public . think for Something Like this to happen a white from the Training Ground is very unusual. And i mean, its quite a sensation, really. Because of the nature of what happened and because it involves Raheem Sterling who holds real u psta rt status Raheem Sterling who holds real upstart status now with his club come up with Manchester City and with england as well. The fa, as i say, moved swiftly with the statement, the move from Gareth Southgate to decide not to pick him on thursday and team harmony has a lwa ys on thursday and team harmony has always been one of the great strengths of st Gareth Southgate because my time as england manager and the strangest thing. What does it tell us about the way Gareth Southgate goes about his business . He has always referenced to us over the year that he has been the england manager, about how they work on diffusing Club Rivalries because that has in the past been a problem for england. And has been identified by Gareth Southgate and his team as one of the many reasons why england have performed for years and years and years so they do an awful lot of work on this in terms of trying to make sure everyone gets along, to make sure everyone gets along, to make sure everyone gets along, to make sure that team harmony is right. And i guess he will be hoping here by moving quickly and as part of the statement he said the decision to leave out Raheem Sterling for the match on thursday it was made with the agreement of the entire squad, that it will quickly blow over. John, great to get that insight from you. And you are going to head too, guess where . St georges park. Lets look at the back pages. The telegraphs got an interview with the out going wales head coach Warren Gatland who says he turned down the chance to manage the all blacks, because hes commited to coaching the lions. Var is the focus in the sun, they say Juergen Klopp and Pep Guardiola will lead calls for change. And its var in the times too, they say some premier league bosses have called it a car crash. Lets stay with var, because the man in charge for the premier league says hed give it seven out of ten for its performance this season. The video assistant referee has been involved in some very controversial decisions this season, it makes some people very angry and there have been calls to scrap it completely. But Neil Swarbrick says fans need to be patient. We know we will be scrutinised and we know there will be people looking at our every move. But in the position i am in, i am comfortable with where we are and i know there is room for improvement with speed wise, et cetera. But for me it has been a work in progress. Rafael nadals hopes of finishing the year as world number one have suffered a blow after he lost his opening match at the atp finals in london. He lost in straight sets to reigning champion Alexander Zverev saying he simply wasnt good enough. It was also the germans first ever win over nadal. And live coverage of the atp finals continues on bbc two this afternoon from 2 oclock. And stand by for one of the most extraordinary stadium openings that youre ever likely to see. This is a giant hologram of a lion, as the Argentinian Club estudiantes de la plata celebrated their first match in their stadium since 2005. The stadium had been closed down because of safety concerns and has now been re developed. Before i go, dont forget sportsday. All the days sports news on the bbc news channel at 6 30 tonight. Thats all the sport for now. Sally, thank you, we love a holographic lion first thing in the morning. Now, the latest unemployment figures have just been released. Unemployment dropped by 23,000 to 1. 31 million in the first three months to september and average earnings increased by 3. 6 in september compared with 3. 8 growth in the previous month our economics correspondent andy verity is here. Where do we start with this, wages . I think thats a good place to start, there was hope today we might see a better increase in real wages which might have taken us back to the peak level from way before the globalfinancial the peak level from way before the Global Financial crisis when real wages were higher than they are now but unfortunately we havent quite got up to that level, the increase you mentioned of 3. 6 , when you strip out inflation it works out about1. 7,1. 8 . Strip out inflation it works out about 1. 7, 1. 8 . Thats good, better than weve been used to, often in the last decade pay has fallen in real terms so an increase in real terms is better than nothing but on the other hand, its not quite as good as a lot of people hoped. The expectation was for 3. 8 . Some sign of wea kness expectation was for 3. 8 . Some sign of weakness there and you can also look at the causes. Employers can pay inflation beating pay rises if each worker is able to produce more for them through advances in technology and training, productivity, unfortunately we have productivity, unfortunately we have productivity today and it shows is com pletely productivity today and it shows is completely flat, it hasnt improved for more than a year and thats quite serious because if it doesnt improve employers find it difficult to sustain inflation beating pay rises. Thats interesting. Unemployment figures, i will get you to talk about those bits and making the point sought to a layperson that unemployment and employment can both do the same thing at the same time . The thing about employment, the total workforce, still near a workforce, 33 million, big, unemployment is a very small proportion, 3. 8 , if the number of unemployed falls proportionately faster than the total number of people employed, the Unemployment Rate will still go down. So they can both move in the same direction that way. But what we had is this pattern in the last ten years of increasing employment, morejobs, in the last ten years of increasing employment, more jobs, but in the last ten years of increasing employment, morejobs, but pay not increasing like a juice true for most of the three or four decades after world war ii by more than inflation and thats the lingering problem, although the government can point to real wage increases, while they last if we are not improving productivity . How does this all plays into the bigger economic picture, briefly . The big economic picture, briefly . The big economic picture is an economy that is not growing as we were used to economy is growing ten or 15 years ago when the group typically by 2 3 , healthy growth. 1 growth, the weakest annualised growth for about a decade. Obviously it hasnt been good, the economy shrinking in the Second Quarter of the year but at least we are not in recession. There we are, ending on a cheerful note. Thank you. As weve been reporting, the former us secretary of state, Hillary Clinton has told the bbc shes dumb founded that the uk government wont release an intelligence and Security Committee report into russian covert actions in the uk. The 2016 us president ial candidate is in london with her daughter chelsea to promote their co authored work, the book of gutsy women. Mishal husain started by asking if it would be gutsy to run as a president ial candidate again. It would be very gutsy. Thats true. Thats something i think about all the time. I think a lot about whats happening in our country, around the world. I try to give the best advice i can to the candidates who are running because my goal is to help retire the current incumbent, i think its imperative that our country regain its leadership and its credibility so im going to do everything i can to make that happen. Will you be endorsing one of them . I dont think so, i will support them, answer their questions in any way that i can but once we have a nominee to do everything i know to do to win. What do you think about whats happening in this country, the direction that we are taking on brexit . A real hope is that the uk sorts itself out. Its up to the people of this country to decide the direction. But we need a strong uk, we need a uk with smart, sensible, forward looking leadership so im dumbfounded that this government wont release the report about russian influence because every person who votes in this country deserves to see that report before your election happens. That should be an absolute condition because there is no doubt, we know it in our country, we have seen it in europe, we have seen it here, that russia in particular, is determined to try to shape the politics of western democracies, not to our benefit but to theirs. Why do you think they are not releasing it . I dont know the answer to that, i would think a reporter like you and others should be absolutely relentless in trying to get to the bottom of it because look, we know from even this Current Trump administrations intelligence officials, that the russians are still in our electoral system. We know they are still pumping out propaganda, we know that they would very much like to ensure the re election of someone who has done their bidding, who just recently said he hopes he can be in red square on may the 1st with putin to see their may day military parade. So there is no doubt of the role that russia played on a 2016 election and is continuing to play. There is a lot of evidence that russia played in the brexit election, im not in your country, i dont have a say about any of that, but the fact that the current government wont release this report by your own government should raise some questions. Now, it is one of the biggest birthday celebrations in the world millions of sikhs are marking the 550th birth anniversary of the founder of their religion, guru nanak. The annual celebration has been given extra significance this year with the opening of a secure, visa free passage between india and pakistan. Tensions between the neighbouring countries have made it difficult for pilgrims to visit the site in pakistan in recent years but an agreement reached last month allows indians to make three mile crossing to the shrine where guru nanak died in 1539, now one of the religions holiest sites. Now, its time for the weather with elizabeth. Rachel, thank you. Staying rather unsettled as we head through the day and for the rest of the week. More rain in the forecast, spells of rain for many of us often going to be rather windy, some of the rain turning wintry over higher ground. Also feeling rather chilly for this time of year. This is today, the area of low pressure gradually pushing its way eastwards into the north sea. We got some very strong gusts of winds barrelling towards the north wales coast at the moment, through Liverpool Bay, some strong gusts of winds, localised met Office Weather warning. The north westerly wind driving showers, longer spells of rain southwards across the uk through the afternoon, turning drier, the best of the sunshine the further south and east you are, the wind turning more northerly by the end of the day. Quite a chilly wind, top temperatures remaining in single figures for the most part, factoring in wind chill as well. With lighter winds the cold air staying dry overnight and a little ridge of High Pressure developing, we expect a touch of ground frost for many areas as we head into tomorrow, cold and frosty star to the morning. Should be dry across most of the British Isles through the morning. Then we have outbreaks of rain pushing in from the west, into South West England and wales, staying dry towards eastern areas tomorrow. We will see plenty of sunshine but look at these temperatures, three or 4 degrees, low single figures. For much of eastern scotland, so that rain on wednesday into thursday is pushing its weight northwards across southern areas of britain. Some of this rain threatening to turn quite heavy and will probably see some rain and hillsnow heavy and will probably see some rain and hill snow right where we dont want to see it we had the recent flooding, still a lot of uncertainty about the extent of this rain, this could change but it looks like we will get plenty of outbreaks of heavy rain through the day on thursday for parts of the peak district, South Yorkshire, derbyshire, flood warnings in place, multiple flood warnings, severe warnings and met Office Weather warnings, all the details on the bbc weather website. On thursday evening its turning calmer, the rain pivoting back but it will start to ease. By friday, a lot of dry weather around, still quite cloudy and breezy towards the south of england in particular, some rain over wales, sunshine towards the north and west as we head through the day on friday. Still going to be feeling rather chilly with temperatures remaining in single figures pretty much across the board. Rather cold and unsettled week. Hello, its tuesday, its ten oclock, im Joanna Gosling. In todays exclusive film, we go behind the scenes with the makers of two deepfake videos of Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn endorsing each other for Prime Minister. Im here with a very special message. If you want to ad lib a few ers, eehs, oohs in there . Only he, not i, can make britain great again. Huzzah that was a good one really good. Yeah, i think so. I think were good with that, gary. Well ask how much influence videos like this can have on an Election Campaign and whether they can be stopped. Campaigners say retailers are missing out on billions of pounds each year because they dont consider the needs of disabled people, including those
