So mark, what do we have this week . A mixed bag. The good liar, a super ripe drama starring helen mirren and ian mckellen. We have the irishman, Martin Scorsese and netflix from thatis Martin Scorsese and netflix from that is playing in cinemas. And luce, an intriguing psychological thriller. Starting with the good liar. Helen mirren and ian mckellen are self suffer sumit online in the opening sequence they are filling out the Online Dating forms and both fibbing about themselves. The good liar sets itself up at the very beginning. We learn early on that he has a con man, he meets helen mirren who is looking for companionship but gradually a relationship forms. Her grandson does not trust ian mckellen and frankly neither would i. You as and frankly neither would i. You as a clap. The size of your state there would be a windfall every week. So, what would you. Stephen . Thought you were in spandau . Did you . They let me out early. Stephen, why didnt you let me know you were back . You should have called what have you got her doing . So he moves in here with his gammy leg and the first time i leave you alone with him, youre giving him all your money . No thats not whats going on here thats something a few fences thats jumping a few fences you know what . This isnt your house. Stephen hes an intruder can you see that . Your embarrassing me in front of mr halloran and roy, who i. Come on. Dont, dont touch me, i. This is adapted from a novel and there is at the beginning we are being set up for a twist which i have to see if you did not see it coming, you were asleep on the job. There is then a second twist and a twist further down the line which makes made me go overhead in sight. The best way to enjoy mrs to enjoy the sight of helen mirren and ian mckellen chewing the scenery for all they are worth. It is. Is preposterous tosh. 0h, they are worth. It is. Is preposterous tosh. Oh, that is strong language. That is not to say it is without its merits. People have enjoyed it. Apparently the novel seems slightly less fanciful. It is kind of a weird cross between miss marple sunday afternoon tv and something which is slightly more sway than that. It makes no sense whatsoever. The pleasure is in seeing two actors enjoy themselves although i have to say i dont believe they were anything other than two actors enjoying themselves up than two actors enjoying themselves up dont believe the characters as the wear, it is a really odd film and it falls between several stalls. It has a very good director and a very fine cast but it is absolutely ridiculous. Is that an opportunity missed . The world is filled with conmen trying to wrangle people out of their savings. Here is a thing, at the beginning the premise which is set up as the good liar. Who is the good liar . And that is a nice little id and obviously one expects there to be twists and turns, which does there to be twists and turns, which d oes exa ctly there to be twists and turns, which does exactly what youd expect. But thenit does exactly what youd expect. But then it goes the realms of the utterly ridiculous. But there is a certain pleasure in seeing very, very finite is having fun. Doesnt make any sense. Any sense no sense. I think we got a message. Your second film, does this make sense . Another film with fine actors. Listed more than i expected. Martin scorsese, joe pesci, robert de niro, ill pacino. Robert de niro back working with scorsese, the kind of movie like cat casino. Made from netflix, a brief theatrical window, the story of ill pacino playing jimmy hoffer, joe pesci plays a very, very underplayed, Stephen Graham playing a characterjoe pesci might have played before. The film uses might have played before. The film uses digital de ageing technology. A lot of question about is a distracting . I did not think it was. The only distracting thing is occasionally the bodies move like old men although their face looks weird. But in a 3. 5 hour movie, for that only to be occasionally distracting was actually pretty good. It is a very interesting story, well told, real film making, terrific soundtrack. The performances are solid and it does. It takes full advantage of the fact it is a netflix, 3. 5 hours long which is what will make people think i will sign watch this at home but i watch it at the cinema and it pretty much flew by with the exception of the last act which did feel like 0k exception of the last act which did feel like ok you are making this for a home audience. But i was pretty entertained and the digital d ageing bothered me much less than expected. Frankly if they could do that to me i would be very happy. Interact i dont like the idea. It isjust digital make up, it is well done. Performance capture, digital costu mes, performance capture, digital costumes, de ageing is just performance capture, digital costumes, de ageing isjust digital make up if you do it properly. Costumes, de ageing isjust digital make up if you do it properlym costumes, de ageing isjust digital make up if you do it properly. It is going to do a whole profession out ofa going to do a whole profession out of a job. They still need standard make up as well. It is the future but you have to be careful. It is not the tail wagging the dog. We have to move on to the third one, luce. Based on a stage play liberal White American couple who adopted a child who had grown up in war torn eritrea. Now he is a model student, fantastic exports, fantastic activating but one of his teachers has started to have worries about him. Is something up with him or does she have a hidden agenda . It is a clip. What are criteria for evaluating what is a violation of privacy. Is privacy a civil right . I think so. Maybe the law isnt so sure. If i went through your desk without you knowing, would you feel like your privacy was violated . Yes, i would. So. Feelings arent a legal argument. In the newjersey case, the teacher assumed the girl was guilty because of her feelings. Thats called reasonable suspicion. Its all the police need to search your car. So its about whats reasonable . Thats what courts are for. It really is just about people, right . Whether they conform to what we think they are. Its not that simple. Nothing ever is. That is the number of it. What you see, i was speaking about the first film with twists but you can see them coming. The great thing about this, it is based on a stage play and it feels a bit like it. But all the way through your kept guessing as to what is actually going on. Doesnt tell you at the end . It is in my opinion impressively unresolved. Yes things do get resolved but it is a film of great ambiguity, great soundtrack. All the way through it is telling you that is awkward, off kilter, there are strange things at work here and what i really liked is it is actually very ha rd to i really liked is it is actually very hard to sustain a movie in which right up until the very end, you are questioning peoples motives, their characters but also you start to realise the film is not going to type itself neatly up. It is going to leave questions unresolved. I thought it was very, very well played, great performance and the teacher is terrific. It is a very satirical take on the middle class couple and their presumptions about things. White saviour stuff . Yes but it also wrong foot the audience. It plays to their expectations and then wrong foot them, or does it . All the way through it i kept thinking because i saw it after watching the good liar, this has a sense of ambiguity and uncertainty the film before did not have. I do not think it is going to have a huge cinema audience but it was really worth seeing. My only reservation, it is based on a stage play and it is quite stagey. But the story was really well told. 30 seconds. Best out . Monos, about child soldiers, a modern day lord of the flies. 0ne out . Monos, about child soldiers, a modern day lord of the flies. One of the weirdest soundtrack and a brilliant ensemble performance by a cast some of them are very well known, some unknown but they mesh together brilliantly. Discerning, overwhelming, wonderful. Sounds incredible. Very quickly, best dvd . Yesterday. Everyone has forgotten beatles accept us our central character. I think it is very fun, central character. I think it is veryfun, i central character. I think it is very fun, i am a suckerfor a Richard Curtis script. It is one of the things you either love or go for heaven sake this is, but i really enjoyed it. I laughed and cried i watched it twice in the second time it was just as powerful. I thought it was just as powerful. I thought it was. Iam it was just as powerful. I thought itwas. Iama it was just as powerful. I thought it was. I am a suckerfor it was just as powerful. I thought it was. I am a sucker for really well done sentimentality and this was like a great pop song you can listen to over and over again. Much i still havent seen that, have got to see it. That is it for this week. Thanks for watching, goodbye. Whether making use at the moment, rarely a good thing.
