The 2019 outstanding role model list celebrates the work being done by lgbt leaders across the globe its out today lets take a look. Ann limb is the first openly lgbt woman to be appointed as chair of the uk scout movement. Bobbi pickard is top of the future leaders list and is a senior manager at bp, and has been instrumental in creating an open and safe space at the oil giant for the transgender community. With us now is bobbi pickard, consultant senior project manager at bp. Thank you very much for coming in. Just how much difference does having a role model, especially in a big company like bp and other great big multinationals . I think it makes a huge difference, especially on, when youre looking at transgender awareness because there are so few transgender role awareness because there are so few tra nsgender role models awareness because there are so few transgender role models that are out and able to speak about their experiences. I think it actually makes a huge difference for peoples ability to understand the type of issues that transgender people go through. Tell us what you are doing to get onto this list . Its been an absolutely whirlwind year with bp pride. We have really raised the transgender awareness at bp hugely. Weve been doing an initiative called trans in the city, where we had 62 organisations joining with called trans in the city, where we had 62 organisationsjoining with bp to do had 62 organisationsjoining with bp todoa had 62 organisationsjoining with bp to do a collaboration to raise awareness. And get the message out to say no matter what you see in some parts of the media around transgender, we as organisations are absolutely fine with that, in the same way we are fine with every diversity that people have. And there is so much diversity, its great for business. It really depends where you work, doesnt it, on what your experience will be . In some Industries Like entertainment and media, it might be easier but other Industries Like energy, like oil, bp. Lord browne, who used to be the chief executive of bp for many years, he said he was firmly in the closet whilst he was the boss of bp as the closet whilst he was the boss of bpasa the closet whilst he was the boss of bp as a gay man. He kept a secret. Absolutely. I think that something thatis absolutely. I think that something that is changing. I think certainly within the energy sector, weve seen a lot of efforts put to try and make lg bt a lot of efforts put to try and make lgbt plus a lot of efforts put to try and make lg bt plus more a lot of efforts put to try and make lgbt plus more included and valued within the energy sector. I think theres lots of sectors of industry where there is still a hell of a lot of work that needs to be done, especially globally. Tell us what youre battling, what sort of discrimination do transgender or lg bt discrimination do transgender or lgbt people face still . Lots of is education, thats the key. Lots of Companies Put work into gender neutral toilets and guidelines but u nless neutral toilets and guidelines but unless you educate your employees, they just wont understand unless you educate your employees, theyjust wont understand why unless you educate your employees, they just wont understand why you are doing that. To give you an example, ten years ago, my permanent career was wrecked because somebody guessed i was transgender and thats why i formed my own consultancy. So there still is really that pressure and stigma around notjust transgender but all lgbt, really, that just needs transgender but all lgbt, really, thatjust needs to be educated and understood and just, you know, people just need to accept that like Everything Else in nature, humans are all completely different and diverse. You know, theres so much benefit that Companies Get from having a diverse workforce. Bobbi pickard, thank you very much. And congratulations on being on that list out today more details on our website. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news. Its reported french owner of peugeot, psa group, wants to merge with its us italian rival fiat chrysler. If the two tied up, it would create a business with a combined market value of nearly 50 billion. A household name we all know, johnson johnson, it claims new tests found no asbestos in a bottle of baby powder that the us health regulators previously said tested positive. The health care giant recalled 33,000 bottles of baby powder earlier in the month after the us regualtor found trace amounts of asbestos in a bottle purchased online. Volkswagen has also just posted its latest results with profits up by more than 11 in the past nine months to 16. 4 billion, boosted by demand for sports utility vehicle. Its not all good news though for the german car giant with slowing Global Demand now expected to hamper future sales. After months of brexit deadlock, mps have voted overwhelmingly to hold a general election on december 12th. Its the first election to be held in the run up to christmas in nearly a century. Jonathan blake joins us from westminster with the latest. You can imagine the christmas headlines floating around in the uk jonathan, what happened, what made them say yes . There was pressure on them say yes . There was pressure on the opposition parties to vote in favour of the election and in the end, once the extension to the Brexit Process had been secured and agreed by the eu, it was labours decision to back this december election that swung it in the end. Borisjohnson tried a new tactic, having tried and failed several times to get an early election under the fixed term parliaments act which says elections can only be held every five years and two thirds of mps every five years and two thirds of m ps vote every five years and two thirds of mps vote in favour of holding one between that time frame. This was just a straight majority needed and the house of commons to effectively change the law to set the date of the election for december the 12th. So afterjeremy corbyn came out yesterday and said he was ready for the election, the vote in parliament was really nothing more than a formality in the end, with the lib dems and the snp and other conservative mps, of course, backing that. So we are now looking at a process in the house of lords today which is pretty much a formality and then parliament will be dissolved next wednesday. It is going to be busy, thank you very much indeed. Jonathan with the latest from westminster. The pound was pretty steady off the back of that news that there will be an election. £1 buying around 1. 28 at the moment. Markets in asia are all down, as you can say. There is one story dominating the global markets, lets move on to the european boards, the Federal Reserve meeting in the united states, that is later. Will they cut Interest Rates . Is later. Will they cut Interest Rates . That is the question. Also, lots of other Companies Reporting earnings today, a long race. We had from airbus already, their profits up from airbus already, their profits up slightly. We have apple, for example. We have facebook later. So for more on apple, back to you. Thank you, sally. Now to the us, where apple is hoping its revamped camera and battery on its latest iphones will help boost sales. The tech giant wll tell us how many phones and tablets its selling later today. Samira hussain has this from new york. How many of you are addicted to your iphone . And how many of you are getting sticker shock every time you see the price for the smartphone from apple . Well, later today, we will see how many other people feel the same when apple reports its earnings. Now, iphones used to be the big money maker, but as the technology has gotten better, people replace them less frequently, which has really cut into apples profits. But apple now hopes that a longer lasting battery and a better camera will get people to spend anywhere from 700 1100 on the new iphone11. Investors will be looking to see how well the phone has sold because it will offer clues on what they can expect in the holiday season. Samira hussain new york. Time now for our daily look at some of the newspaper and website stories which have caught our eye. Joining us is emily taylor, chief executive of 0xford information labs a cybersecurity consultancy. Perfect for the story we are going to do is. Yes, you talk to us about this story when it originally came to light, this Israeli Company accused, tell us whats going on . Backin accused, tell us whats going on . Back in may we heard whatsapp had been hacked. This was a real surprise because whatsapp is known as unencrypted app and felt to be very secure. Today, weve heard that whatsapp is suing this israeli Cyber Security Company Called nso and its alleging a number of things, but including breach of its own terms and conditions because it is saying it has used the application in a way that has abused human rights activists. It has worked with citizen lab, a Canadian Civil Society group, to identify people who are targeted by this hack. It wasnt everybody, it was just 11100 people that they found but a 100 of those are prominent human rights defenders, journalists and other Civil Society activists. In layman terms, do we know how this work . Whatsapp is supposed to be encrypted, supposed to be safe . It was pretty clever the way they got in. It would show up as a missed call, if it showed up at all. So it was going on through the voice function and then it didnt even need the person to answer the call, it would then go in using something called a buffer overflow. It would send too much, like pouring too much into a jug, it has to go somewhere, and it would go into the phone system and give very, very low level access. You think about all the stuff that whatsapp has access to, your camera, your microphone, your list of contacts, that if you area your list of contacts, that if you are a Civil Society or a journalists, then that is going to be very, very revealing. Nso group has vehemently denied any wrongdoing whatsoever and they are going to fight this case. What does it mean for a regular whatsapp users, quite a few of us around the world watching this, should we be concerned . I think the way that whatsapp dealt with this was very responsible, because back in may they made their announcement very quickly after they found out. They issued a release. So the standard sort of advice is dont panic but do patch. So when you see those updates coming through in any kind of application, do update your systems. The lesson at the end of all this is whatever the app, nothing is safe, nothing secure . Nothing is 10096 secure, no matter how good it is. Some would say its good, that if its terrorist activities . These things are never black and white. Nso, it strongly denies this and what it says is it helps Law Enforcement and counterterrorism across the world. In those sort of circumstances, i think most people would go, yes, we do want that sort of intelligence. Its when it crosses over the line and starts to undermine human rights protections that people are worried. Whatsapp is owned by facebook, yet another security breach. Facebook in the headlines again for all the wrong reasons, but in this particular case, this is sort of hacking, malware, something that whatsapp was not at all engineering . It could happen to anybody. As i say, if you contrast with yahoo, which had a massive hack a few years ago and took years to admit it, whatsapp got onto it quickly. But facebook has beenin onto it quickly. But facebook has been in the news but all the wrong reasons and with related stories today, so not a good day for them, perhaps. Emily, thank you for being on and explaining all of that. Still to come matchmaking myriad with tonnes of dating apps out there how do you stand out in crowd . It is very difficult i would imagine. We speak to one boss who says its all about keeping it amongst close friends. Youre with worklife from bbc news. Air travel can be stressful, especially waiting to board the plane and get to your seat. I have three little boys and i dread it and i have three little boys and i dread itandi i have three little boys and i dread it and i think everyone on the plane around me dreads it as well inflicting it on everyone else, i know that feeling Gatwick Airport says it is working with easyjet to try out new ways to board passengers and make the process a bit smoother. Lets hear more from tom burridge our transport correspondent. What are they doing and why didnt anyone think of this before . We have all been there, sort of stuck in the middle of the plane in the aisle, trying to get on board, may be our seat is just a couple of rows in front but someone is there faffing around, getting things out of their bag, may be dealing with their small kids, i know what thats like what gatwick is trying to do is get to a situation, use new way of boarding passengers which makes those scenarios less likely. The most eye catching way they are trialling is boarding and window seats first, from the back to the front, then doing middle seats from the back to the front and then i all seats from the front and then i all seats from the back to the front. If you think about it, if you sit right at the backin about it, if you sit right at the back in the window, you would be first on and that is logical, because he would have to climb over or push past, hopefully not push past, but get passed quite a few people. Gatwick says that methodology doesnt really work for families. Again, yes, sally, you and me and others. Putting a lot of our personal experience into this i cant experience into this icant imagine experience into this i cant imagine my three year old getting on the plane on her own. Thats why they are looking at other ways are boarding and another methodology they are looking at is basically boarding a row at the back, the whole row and then boarding three rows in front and three rows in front of that and i guess filling in the rows in the meantime. They are looking at a variety of ways, two month trial and at one particular gate at the airport. 0k, tom, we will leave it there, thank you for explaining that idea. Gatwick airport working with easyj et. Idea. Gatwick airport working with easyjet. Quite a few of you have been in touch about this story this morning. 0ne viewer said, you know what credit . Whatever you put in place, its chaos. Particularly when they charge the hold luggage and everyone has hand luggage. What is even worse is changing a nappy in the toilets have you done that . Yes, a distant memory. Turbulence. Ive seen people do it on the seats. The boeing 737 max, a story on the website, Congressional Senate committee is continuing with the boss Dennis Muhlenberg being grilled today for a second day. That is happening later. Youre watching worklife. A reminder of our top story flying the flag the 2019 0utstanding role model is published today. It celebrates global lgbt leaders and why its so important for bosses to be open at work. Lets talk about dating apps. Weve seen a wave of products to help us find a match. It is big business, a wave of products helping us all find the right match. Picking up a partner at a bar has been all but replaced by a swipe on a smartphone. Some might say well, one app find your a match with the help of mutual friends. I caught up with its founder to find out why he started his firm, when there are already so many out there . And the competition is so hot. Hinge is the dating app thats designed to be deleted. What were for is for people who want to get off dating apps and actually find their person and a lot of dating apps that are out there right now are geared at younger people who just want to meet new people and have fun but its not really geared towards people who are ready to get off dating apps. But weve interviewed several companies who run dating apps or dating websites. They all say the same thing that we are here to match you and find your life partner, so how are you different . Were the only app that follows up after you exchange phone numbers, to find out if you went on a date or not and how that date went because we organise our entire company around how many first dates and second dates are we setting up every single week, whereas a lot of these other apps focus on matches and time in app and these kinds of things. How will you stay true to yourself and what you stand for as an organisation when youve sold out to match group, which is the owners of tinder . We thought to do this reboot in 2016, where we really changed the whole app. 0riginally, we were designed around how fast can we grow. When youre focused on growth, you focus on matches and how much time people are spending in the app, which will help you grow in the near term but its really Just Entertainment and i think over the long term, what were trying to do is build the most Effective App and match groups really bought into that strategy and theyre huge supporters of it. So, if youre an app thats designed to be deleted, how then will you make money, make profits, if when people are successful they just delete you, theyre not paying a Monthly Subscription . Because every single time someone deletes the app because they found someone on hinge, they go tell their friends about it. Right now, actually theres a president ial candidate in the us, pete buttigieg, who met his husband on hinge and thats been written about everywhere and causing a huge spike in downloads in the us. Thatjust happens all the time when people are among their friends, weve created up to this point hundreds of thousands of relationships, tens of thousands of marriages. What about peoples data . You get a whole lot of information about people who use your app, what happens to that . We have really strict protocols around use of data, of course, but, really, the only way we use data is to help find ways to get people out of more dates. But are you under pressure from shareholders at match group to monetise that important crucial data . Theres really not pressure like that. We dont. The main way that we make money, in fact, the only way we make money is through subscriptions, people buying subscriptions in the app. Where are you going, though, at hinge, will you diversify, will itjust be about people finding a partnerfor life or will you help people connect with other types of groups . Hinges soul is really about helping people find their romantic partners, but i do think that as the. In the future, we can continue to evolve the service, to get better at that. When you choose your person, you are. Like, thats the most important decision that youre ever going to make and i think none of us are good at online dating. Were not born good at online dating. Were hardly good at dating, period so, what we want to do at hinge is actually build a Research Division which helps learn from people whove had and share those learnings with other people. So, what does it say about us as humans, that we need technology now to find our life partner . Its not that we need technology but i think technology can help us find a better person. If youre just wandering around the streets trying to find someone, like in a bar, its. I think we can be much, much better at helping you zero in on the right person for you. So, i think that technology can just is, it helps you find a better partner than maybe you would have otherwise. What did you do before you started hinge . I was in Business School before and heartbroken over my college girlfriend, kate, because wed broken up and i tried to get back together with her. So, i thought i was going to go work at another consulting firm, but this idea came from creating a dating service that young people would use, this was 2011, so before dating apps and so that was the beginning, i was just out of student Business School. I have to say, i met his lovely wife, he brought her in with him. They were expecting a baby in august. So that worked out well absolutely. Success out of heartbreak. In a moment well look at some tweets, but first lets talk about something we love streaming movies and neflix. Marc randolph was the first boss of the us streaming business back in the 1990s. Netflix. My ceo secret is recognising that the very skills that may have been successful in getting the Company Started may not be the right skills to bring the company to the next level. I have some of the skill sets for starting companies up. I have this predisposition to action. I dont think things, i dont overthink things. We said lets quickly figure out whether our assumption is correct. Reed was concerned, he was concerned about myjudgement. He was seeing my inability to make the hard decision, my inability to have the strategic sense of where we were going. When someones telling you your failings, its very hard not to get defensive, but i had to reflect and say, am i the right person to lead to this company . Do i have the skills that would be needed . I figured out early what im good at and what i enjoy doing at its early stage. But the very, very skills that help you get the company off the ground are a different set of skills and what it would require to bring it forward, as it gets larger and the scale changes. Getting out of the way is a critical component of doing the right thing as a start up ceo. Quite a journey he has had. At the top of the show, we asked you about role models paul modley says |ts really important to have have lgbtq role models at work, helps to build a culture of inclusion, sends a positive message to existing employees and support the recruitment of new talent in to the organisation sabitha banu role models are Unsung Heroes heroines every society, institution or organisation must have but do we really look up to them . Thats it from worklife today. Well see you again tomorrow. Thanks for watching, bye bye. Good morning. Just like the last few mornings, weve got some pretty cold conditions this morning, particularly across the northern half of the uk, some frost across scotland and the far north of england. For most of us, again, today is going to be a drier day and there will be some sunshine. You can see the dividing line between the milder air towards the south west and the colder air thats beenin south west and the colder air thats been in place for many of us during the course of this weekend. Its this way the front that separates the two. It will edge into south Western Areas and continue to bring some outbreaks of rain towards the south west. High pressure further north and the east, quite stubborn at the moment. For most of us, a dry one today and there will be some sunshine again. Rain in the south west will continue, perhaps in south west will continue, perhaps in south west wales, the channel islands, rain continuing into the afternoon. Elsewhere, dry with the sunshine, temperatures generally about 10 12 degrees. Tonight, we continue with the rain in the south west. Elsewhere, there will be some clear skies. Temperatures once again dropping down fairly close freezing, so a thrust. Further south, staying quite mild overnight, temperatures in cardiff and plymouth about 8 11 celsius. During thursday, the higher pressure is still quite stubborn, so for most of us, its keeping things dry and sunny. More clout on thursday in northern ireland, west wales, the far south west and it is this area that could see some patchy rain. Temperature is about 10 13d. As we go through thursday night into friday, these weather fronts will start to make more inroads across the uk. The High Pressure moves away. Quite a messy picture during friday, lots of cloud and here for many of us, some outbreaks of rain, particularly across wales, the midlands, southern england. The rain could be heavy. Further north, the brain quite not as persistent or as heavy but still quite cloudy and damp and drizzly at times. That milder. The temperatures for many of us up to 1214 temperatures for many of us up to 12 14 or temperatures for many of us up to 1214 or 15 temperatures for many of us up to 12 14 or 15 celsius. Into the weekend, those weather systems clear away before more moving from the west. This area of low pressure spreading in over the weekend, quite gusty winds in southern areas, particularly on sunday. With all those weather fronts around, its likely to be quite cloudy and there will be some rain at times over the weekend. Temperature wise, they will still be up in double figures for many of us, so a bit milder than we have had through the first part of this week. Bye bye. Youre watching bbc news at 9 00 with me annita mcveigh. The headlines. Britain will head to the polls for its first december general election in almost a century after mps approved borisjohnsons fourth bid to break the brexit deadlock.
