Wales are out of the Rugby World Cup, after losing to south africa in the semi final. And in half an hour, well take a more in depth look at some of the weeks stories in dateline london. Us media are reporting the military has conducted an operation against the leader of the so called Islamic State group. The white house says President Trump will make a statement later today. There are unconfirmed reports he will announce the groups leader Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi was killed during a us led raid yesterday. The is leader has been described as the worlds most wanted man. In 2011 the us officially designated him a terrorist and offered a reward of ten Million Dollars for information leading to his capture or death. His death has been wrongly reported on several occasions. He emerged in 2010 as the leader of alqaeda in iraq, one of the groups that merged with is, and rose to prominence during the attempted merger with the al nusra front in syria. Mark lowen reports. A night time strike on the highest of targets. This unverified footage is said to show us jets attacking the syrian hideout of Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State group. American media and Iraqi Security sources suggest she was killed. This is said to have been the aftermath of the attack American Media and Iraqi Security sources suggest he was killed. This is said to have been the aftermath of the attack in a province close to the turkish border. The scale of the fire fight is clear with bloodstained clothes in the debris. As a convoy was hit there are reports that he and others detonated suicide vests before us troops could get to him. If confirmed, one of the worlds most wanted has been wiped out. His only public appearance was in 2014 at mosul mosque where he declared a so called caliphate of is. An area at its height the size of britain and where his group waged terror. Under its menacing black flag his jihadists took over swathes of syria and iraq. Massacring, enslaving and raping. From its base the group plotted attacks across the world dispatching brainwashed bombers everywhere from the us to france, turkey to indonesia, britain to australia. Thousands were killed in the hateful name of the Islamic State, exporting its sunni extremism. Westerners who strayed into the caliphate were captured, imprisoned and often beheaded. The is Propaganda Machine filming the gruesome details and posting them, a twisted badge of honour. The Us Led Coalition has attacked is for five years, pummelling its territory. Earlier this year the groups final patch of land fell. The physical caliphate was wiped out. But Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi was still at large. This was his last video. A refusal to give in. He was the author of a vicious creed. A terror group that waged war against the enemies ofjihad. If he has been eliminated, it is seismic. But his ideology and thousands of his ardent followers remain. X earlier, i spoke to former state Department Adviser matthew bryza, about the significance of the news, if its found to be true. Yes, if he is gone that is significant in terms of undercutting the morale of the Islamic State or so called Islamic State but to tell you the truth, operationally, it is not that big of an impact because he has had to effectively cede control of the organisation for the last couple of years after some reports that he had been injured in previous us bombings. Symbolically quite important. 0perationally not so much but for President Trump this is a gigantic political significance. He is already saying he has got something very big to announce. I guess he will use this politically, wont he . And he will be delighted by this if it is true. Yes. If it is true this could be a political life preserverfor him because right now washington is completely seized upon impeachment enquiry happening in the us house of representatives. About his pressuring the president of the ukraine for his personal political gain. That issue will pale, i think, in terms of the public and even the elite political debate in washington compared with this grandiose achievement of potentially eliminating Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi and that could change the whole momentum of the impeachment proceedings against President Trump. Do you think this would have been something that the us military would have planned for quite a while . How many people in washington would have been in the loop for an operation like this . Number one, i am sure for certain there were contingency plans in the works for a long time, but number two, usually there is an intelligence lead based on my experience working in the white house for four years, an intelligent lead comes up unexpectedly and we have to move quickly adjust those contingency plans. For certain though, this would mark a welcome example of interagency coordination with the cia providing intelligence that it appears to have garnered from the iraqi military. The Kurdish Militia group, viewed as a terrorist group by turkey, it has claimed it provided some useful intelligence. And then of course the Defense Department would have executed the attack, so up until now more recently President Trump as Foreign Policy particularly in syria has appeared to be haphazard and without a lot of interagency coordination so in this case there seems to have been quite a bit of coordination but i would guess information would have been hell to the narrowest possible circle of knowledgeable people. And actually it has been quite haphazard in some ways. He was criticised around the world for effectively appearing to give the green light to turkey to mount that offensive so i suppose Something Like this would be even more welcome in the sense that it would distract from all of that. 100 . Absolutely. And he can now say, all of my critics out there who said by green lighting the Turkish Operation which i did not green light, that is what he will say, even so, i told you i made a brilliant strategic move. Now we have a ceasefire and quiet in Northern Syria and thanks to meme we capture Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi and have dealt isis a chilling blow. And therefore all the fear about the Turkish Military operation leading to the reconstitution is another example of fake news and i am the great winner. Wales have lost to south africa in the Rugby World Cup semifinal, meaning they will go on to play new zealand for third place in tokyo on friday. South africa secured a 19 16 victory and will now face england in the final next saturday. Lets cross to dan roan, who is at the International Stadium in yokohama. Welsh dreams shattered, but they have had quite a ride at this world cup. They have, but i think you are right, they will be desperately disappointed that their dream of a first ever World Cup Final is over, because i think they felt this really was the best chance they would ever have of making it all the way through to rugbys showpiece. After all, they were six nations grand slam winners, their legendary coach Warren Gatland was leaving his position at the end of this tournament, so the players were desperate to give him the sendoff he deserved. He has one four six nations titles, three of them grand slams. In truth, they were depleted through injury. They had lost key players in the build up to this match. They managed to patch up their Inspirational CentreJonathan Davies for this game, but in the first half, they lost george north, and in the end, that really told. It was an attritional, scrappy game. South africa went in at half time and all the points had been scored through the boot of the respective fly halves. In the second half, Andrei Pollard scored the crucial points with another penaltyjust four minutes from time, making it 1916. The four minutes from time, making it 19 16. The welsh had fought back bravely, and josh adams tried, bringing them level at 16 16. In such a tight encounter, who scored next would win. Wiles ultimately, their resistance broke and they had no response. South africa have the chance to win what would be a third world cup. England will start favourites after the way they performed against new zealand yesterday. That was a dominant england performance. You think they will be pretty confident of beating south africa . Not complacent or taking anything for granted, but confident . They will be, because new zealand have one like the last two world cups, they are a formidable opposition and they have ruled rugby over the last decade. England were very much outsiders going into that match last night, but they didnt just win, it was the manner of their performance. They completely outplayed the all blacks and the scoreline didnt demonstrate how dominant they were. Eddiejones did a fantasticjob in preparing them to face the all blacks. No one feels south africa are in the same kind of category. Nonetheless, their pack is awesome, formidable this evening, and wiles just couldnt find a way through. The power game of south africa ultimately was decisive. England, although impressive up front and certainly defensively, the way they tackled last night against new zealand was incredible at times, they will be concerned about south africas forward power. That is what eddiejones will focus on. He was here this evening, watching and making notes, and no doubt he will have a plan, he always does, to take on the south africans. They are serious opponents. They won the Rugby Championship and came above new zealand in the Southern Hemisphere tournament this year. The england team will start as favourites. Sport, and for a full round up, we go over to the bbc sport centre. Heres 0lly foster. We have just heard from alun wyn jones, and he says, we stayed in the arm wrestle. That is how he described that match. It was a cagey affair, as dan was saying. He was proud of them when they went to 1616, but proud of them when they went to 16 16, but south africa took advantage. We fell short, but hopefully we will get another opportunity. It wasnt our day, but im still proud to pull this jersey on and represent all the people in red in the stadium. And they were there, werent they, in numbers . Next saturdays World Cup Final will be between england and south africa, a repeat of the 2007 final in paris. In the last 20 minutes, wales lost their semifinal to the springboks in yokohama. 19 16, it was the battle of the boots in the first half, but the match burst into life after the break. Josh adams converted a try, levelling the scores at 16, all with 20 minutes to play. But south africa won a late penalty, which Handre Pollard took for the victory. This england will have to watch out giving away penalties, anything in their own half for further. He was perfect with his kicking. South africa, the two time winners, celebrated their progrees to a third World Cup Final, their first since they beat england in the tournament in france 12 years ago. We will have much more reaction to that welsh defeat across bbc news for the rest of the day. Manchester city are three points behind leaders liverpool after their 3 0 win over aston villa yesterday. All the goals came in the second half raheem sterling, david silva and Ilkay Gundogan moving city back to second in the table. Afterwards, manager Pep Guardiola was full of praise for sterling. He isa he is a guy who shows the energy that we need to play football, and he did it. Raheem, it doesnt matter at the end, but the way he played the first half shows us what we should do, where we should go, and we did it. So its over to liverpool now, can they get their six point lead back . Theyre at home to tottenham. Thats one of four matches this afternoon. Newcastle take on wolves in the two oclock kick off. The home side have only managed to score two goals in the last four games at st jamess park. In the later kick offs, arsenal host crystal palace, and Manchester United travel to norwich. Today is the anniversary of the death of leicester citys former chairman vichai srivaddhanaprabha. He was killed last year alongside four others in a Helicopter Crash outside leicesters king power stadium. The club has paid tribute to the thai businessman who was central to their Incredible Premier League title win in 2016. The wounds are still there, definitely. 0bviously, the wounds are still there, definitely. Obviously, it has been a year, but the boss is constantly on our minds still. Every time we go onto the field, we think about him. We wa nt onto the field, we think about him. We want to do him proud. We know what he wants from the club and the players, and our success, so we want to do him proud, and every time we go out there, we try and win. Its neck and neck at the top of the scottish premiership. Celtic are at aberdeen, thats a 12 15 kick off, and rangers are at home to motherwell. Both glasgow teams have 22 points and an identical goal difference at the top of the table. Josh taylor is the new unified super lightweight champion after beating american Regis Prograis in london. It was a tightly fought contest for the scot, who remains undefeated in 16 bouts. Taylor won on a majority decison. Derek chisora is a step closer to a world heavyweight title shot. He came out on top in the all british bout with david price. With the fight being stopped in the fourth round, after Prices Corner threw the towel in. Back to rugby union closer to home. In the pro 1a, the dragons have eased to their second win of the new season. They beat glasgow 18 5, taine basham with the first of their two tries. The maths is slightly complicated, but the bbc sport website explains it all. Ill be back with an update on the next hour. An early renaissance painting by the italian painter cimabue will go up for auction today, just weeks after the work was found hanging in an elderly womans home near paris. Christ mocked, part of a series of paintings from the late 13th century, has been valued at between four and six million euros, in what could be frances biggest art sale of the year. Eric turquin is an old master appraiser who studied and valued the painting hejoins me now via webcam. Eric, i think that is the painting behind you. Tell us how it was discovered, how it was found. This picture was found in the clearing of a house. An old lady was leaving a house she had sold and she asked the local auctioneer to empty the house. As she is a good auctioneer, she thought, this looks like an icon. Not like an icon but like something else, and she brought the picture to us. That is an incredible story. Tell us more about the painting and its place in the history of art. How special is it . Extremely special. This is probably one of the First Western paintings. Cimabue is a transformer, somebody who, starting from the greek world, the icons, did something much more human. There is a very simplified perspective, before the creation of prospective 200 years later. But what cimabue is bringing is humanity in these faces. All these aggressive figures around christ, with real expression. The expression of christ himself in the centre, who is outside the crowd, is just a centre, who is outside the crowd, is justa centre, who is outside the crowd, is just a abandoning himself. A magnificent gesture of abandonment. These figures on the left and right are protecting him. One is opening his arms to protect him from the crowd. The other one is putting his hand over his head to protect christ against the sword that is hitting him. It is a very touching picture. We are used to this, but in 1280, this was totally new. This is a real breakthrough in the art of painting. He is bringing humanity, and thats really new. It must be incredibly exciting for you to be so close to it. How much do you think it will sell for . It is obviously an incredibly exciting work of art. What sort of price do you think it might fetch . One of my english collea g u es might fetch . One of my english colleagues in 2000 discovered the other half of the picture, which was on other half of the picture, which was on is now in the National Gallery in london. It sold for £6 million in 2001. We have put a rather low estimate of 4 6 million euros. We have enormous hopes for this picture. We showed it to the greatest museums in the world, the greatest museums in the world, the greatest collectors, even the contemporary art gallery has registered to be here this afternoon. I think we will get a huge price, which is good news for our market, good news for all the antique dealers, the experts, our collea g u es antique dealers, the experts, our colleagues who are looking for pictures. Everything is possible. And thats great. Would you rather it was just and thats great. Would you rather it wasjust on and thats great. Would you rather it was just on display in a museum rather than sold to a private collector who might just keep rather than sold to a private collector who mightjust keep it in a house somewhere locked up . M would be great if it would be in a great museum, joining one or two other ones. That would be fantastic. It certainly would. Thank you so much for giving us that lovely history of art lesson this morning. Borisjohnson has accused mps of holding the country hostage by refusing to give him the general election he wants on december the twelfth. The liberal democrats and the snp have joined forces in an attempt to trigger an earlier poll. 0ur Political Correspondent tom bateman explained that, under their plan, the election would be held three days earlier, on december the ninth. If a snap election like the one borisjohnson wants is to be held, in normal circumstances, you need a two thirds majority in parliament. That cant happen without labours support. This proposal would see the parties changing the law to set the election date. That only needs half of the mps and so could happen without labour. Just in the last hour or so, jo swinson, the leader of the lib dems, has been setting out how the proposals would work. I havent spoken to borisjohnson, but i think the challenge is absolutely on him. Because if he is serious about wanting an election, and if he is genuine that its about having an election before christmas, then he can back this bill. Because the other problem with his plan is that it leaves the ability to set the date of the election down to the prime minister. He says the 12th of december, but, i mean, this is a man who is prepared to say anything. He doesnt do what he says. The advantage of this bill is that it enshrines the date in the law, and we know that ultimately when push comes to shove, he has been forced to obey the law. Whether that was on recalling parliament, or whether that was on sending that letter to request the extension. So what then to the other parties make of it . The conservatives today have described the idea as a stunt and say that they are concerned because it could potentially be amended in the commons to change things like the voting age, which has been a priority of the lib dems. They say that their proposal for an election, the one outlined by borisjohnson last week, is the best way to deliver it. We have put forward the proposals for an election. The lib dems and the snp are seeking, in their bill, they are seeking to change the date by three days and take. So what . What is the significance of a few days . And make no attempt to even pursue the Withdrawal Agreement bill. We have been clear, we want to leave the European Union in good order. That is what we have always said. And we want a general election. 0urs does both, theirs does not do both. So that is the conservatives, as for the labour party, they are keeping their council for now. As i say, they have blown hot and cold depending on who you talk to, as to whether they do want an election. Diane abbott today telling andrew marr that their priority for now is making sure that no deal is definitely off the table. Well, he could come to parliament and categorically give parliament an undertaking that he is not going to come out without a deal. But he wont do that, because coming out without a deal is something that people like Dominic Cummings would want, because then it becomes notjust brexit, but a trump brexit. Opening up the british economy to american multinationals. But if he were to come to parliament and unequivocally say that he is not going to crash out without a deal, we would be satisfied with that. So that is labours diane abbott. What are we expecting in the week ahead at westminster . Well, everything now hangs on what the eu decide. We heard from them just at the end of last week that they would agree an extension. We dont know though how long that would be for. And as we have just seen, the date of that extension is absolutely key. If Emmanuel Macron gets his way, we understand he wants an extension to a couple of weeks into november. Well, all bets are off, anything could happen. If though parliaments wish for an extension to the end of january is granted, then i think it is starting to look more likely than not that we will see an election before the end of the year. But at the moment in politics, who knows . Anything could happen. The archbishop of canterbury has warned borisjohnson to avoid using inflammatory language as the country prepares for a possible general election. In an interview with the sunday times, justin welby says its extraordinarily dangerous for politicians to use careless comments in a society that is now polarised and volatile. Window cleaners in canada had a lucky escape after strong winds forced their platform to swing violently out of control. The cleaners were working on the stantec tower in edmonton when the platform they were on, which was suspended by a crane, swung away from the building. It then crashed into windows on the fifth story several times and one of the workers was left hanging by their harness in mid air. Edmonton fire and rescue said both workers were helped down to safety. No one was injured. Dateline london is coming up. Now its time for a look at the weather. It is calm at the moment. Beautiful blue sky and sunshine, High Pressure starting to move in from the atla ntic starting to move in from the atlantic and quietening things down. Some showers in scotland driven by a fresh northerly wind which will ease as we go through the day. The showers have been quite frequent and wintry with any elevation, and further south, hardly a cloud in the sky, lots of sunshine out there at the moment. A beautiful sunday afternoon, but
