And we celebrate the 50th birthday of the internet, thats in click in half an hour. England are through to the final of the Rugby World Cup after beating defending champions new zealand. They ended the all blacks grip on the the trophy, with a 19 points to 7 victory in yokohama. Its the first time england have reached the final since 2007, and the first time theyve beaten new zealand in the history of the tournament. Theyll find out their oppponents tomorrow as wales take on south africa in the other semifinal. Lets speak to our sports correspondent, andy swiss. What a game indeed. I dont think these england fans who are leaving these england fans who are leaving these england fans who are leaving the stadium behind me even in their wildest dreams would have thought that they could ever win quite so emphatically against the mighty all blacks. But they have done with a stunning performance. England really took the initiative in the opening seconds, right from the kick off they took the lead after barely 90 seconds with a try from tuilagi. He dived over to put england ahead so they made a 7 0 with the conversion. England led 10 0 at half time. The all blacks could barely lay a finger on them. After the break, england made it 13 0 with another penalty. Then at the all blacks hit back with a try of their own. A mistake from england at the line out. He dived over the line to give new zealand a chance to get back into the game. It made the score 13 7 to england. Was the comeback on for new zealand . Well, know it, it wasnt. England we re well, know it, it wasnt. England were quite clinical and ruthless. And they had a kicker in the form of his life. Three penalties in the second half put england out of sight. That settled any england nerves inside the stadium. To be honest, they were dominant against the all blacks. And when the final whistle went with the score 19 7, celebrations of the thousands of england fans inside the stadium behind me. You can seejust what it meant. They have had a rocky few yea rs, meant. They have had a rocky few years, the England Rugby team under eddiejones. They years, the England Rugby team under eddie jones. They struggled years, the England Rugby team under eddiejones. They struggled at times last year, but they have found their form at the perfect time. And you can see just what it meant to the fans. You suspect the celebrations will continue long into the night here in yokohama after what will be a famous victory. In her first World Cup Final since 2007. And have you managed to speak to any of the fans after the game . We can see some people behind you at the moment. All eyes visibly on tomorrow and who they will be up against. Tomorrow, who knows . We could have an all british World Cup Final. What a prospect that would be. Today these england fans that i spoke to early on, they were so nervous going in up against the all blacks. But when they came out, a very different story. This is the reaction of the fa ns story. This is the reaction of the fans that i have been speaking to. That was incredible from start to finish, they were all over them. All overthem. Finish, they were all over them. All over them. Is that the best you have ever seen england play . That is how we thought they were going to play and we hope that they would play and they did. What was the atmosphere like . Green that no one in the england side was quiet for a minute. They were backing the boys the whole way. And what now . The final bring it home we are here for the final. A lot of optimism there. What is the significance of winning today . First of all, this will go down as living ins greatest victories. The all blacks, new zealand are the superpower of world rugby and have been for the best part of a decade. Remarkably, this is the first time they have lost a match at a world cup ini2 years. They have lost a match at a world cup in 12 years. England had never beaten them in a world cup match. They had come close in other games over the past few years. They lost bya over the past few years. They lost by a single point last year. But there was always a sense that the all blacks had something over england. If england to dismantle them in the way that they have. Make no mistake, 19 7 flatters new zealand. England could and should have won even more. They had a couple of tries disallowed. It was an emphatic victory by england. As you say, they are now into their first World Cup Final since 2007. Of course, famously they want in australia in 2003. Got to the final in 2007 in as i say, they have had a choppy few years. They struggled at times last year. But they have found theirform at times last year. But they have found their form at the perfect time. Wales or south africa will be in the final next weekend. After this performance, they are going to be very, very tough to beat. Thank you very, very tough to beat. Thank you very much. Enjoy the next 2a hours. I spoke to the former England RugbyInternational Brian moore a short while ago and began by asking his reaction to the result. I think it was a tremendous victory, but the best thing about it was they absolutely deserved it. No element of luck, in fact, they had a couple of luck, in fact, they had a couple of decisions go their way, it could have been a bigger victory. They made a very good new zealand side look tentative. And did new zealand underperform . I dont think they we re underperform . I dont think they were allowed to perform as they normally are. When they play the ball in hand usually, they look to escape in the best defence. But england time and time again shut them down, second and third tackles. I think new zealand made a bad mistake in their selection putting barrett in the back row, that gave england an advantage. I6 turnovers, that was the basis of the game. So england into the final, how much of that credit goes to eddiejones . England into the final, how much of that credit goes to eddie jones . huge amount of credit goes to him. He had the foresight to pick the forward farrell. A lot of people, including me, didnt think that was the right thing. But he picked the two number seven is in the back row. And he was confident enough to bring all of his bench on against the double world champions. And defend what was a slender lead. At the end of the day, he has been proved absolutely right. This is the point, if they dont win the final, all of this is for nothing. And in terms of their preparation, their fitness, how much of that has played a part in getting them to the final four next week . I remember eddie jones saying to me when he first came here that these players are not fit enough. I remember thinking, that these players are not fit enough. I rememberthinking, are you sure about that . He is absolutely right. The intensity at this level, and certainly in the final, is said to me about anything that people playing domestically. He was absolutely right to have the sessions he has had. Even though people complained along the way. Sessions he has had. Even though people complained along the waym there a risk that having beaten the all blacks now, but england might relax or not be able to perform again for next week . Because we dont know who they will be up against, but they have beaten one of the top teams in the world. Psychologically, it is a different challenge. But they are professionals, eddiejones challenge. But they are professionals, eddie jones knows what it takes to win world cups. And it will be his, the captains, and the manager is a pot of a job to disabuse anyone that this is a job done. It is nothing unless they win. And who would you place your bet on in terms of going into the final against england next week . |j in terms of going into the final against england next week . I said this morning that england would go through. I think that south africa will go through. I would rather as an englishman play south africa, not because i just like wales, an englishman play south africa, not because ijust like wales, but i think the domestic element and the familiarity would not play into englands cans. And what is your advice now for the england team Going Forward in the next few days to prepare for that big match . They need a couple of days rest and relaxation. Not unfocused, not using energy, but just taking relaxation. Not unfocused, not using energy, butjust taking time to have a bit of thought process away from by, a bit of thought process away from rugby, then the hard work will start after a days reflection. And it will be hard work. Any stars in the tea m will be hard work. Any stars in the team that people should look out for next week . I think the whole team was deserving of a mention, but tuilagi, underhill. What does this mean for english rugby overall to see the team finally in this huge game internationally . It means something, they have beaten the double world champions and knocked them out, which is a big achievement. But i come back to this, it doesnt really mean anything if you dont win the final. Isnt that rather harsh . It is, that i have been through this process. I won a semifinal, then i lost the final. I know how it feels, and i dont want anyone else to go through that. Brian moore there. Absolutely determined to see this through. Detectives on both sides of the English Channel are continuing to investigate the discovery of 39 bodies in the back of a lorry in essex on wednesday. Here, four people are being questioned, including the lorry driver. Prosecutors in belgium are trying to find out who delivered the trailer from zeebrugge, the port it left before arriving in the uk. It was thought the eight women and 31 men were chinese nationals, but a number of vietnamese families have raised concerns their relatives could be among the dead. Andy moore reports. The bbc has been contacted by six vietnamese families who believe their loved ones may have been on the lorry. They include pham thi tra my, who was 26. At the time the container was crossing to the uk, she sent a series of text messages, saying i am really, really sorry, mum and dad. My trip to a foreign land has failed. I am dying. I cant breathe. I love you very much. I am sorry. The bbc has also been contacted by the family of nguyen dinh luong, who was 20 and also missing. On thursday, essex police said the victims were believed to be chinese. They now say its a developing picture, and they have made this appeal to anyone who thinks their relatives may have died. I know you may be worried about speaking to the police and i would like to reassure you that we just want to be able to give the victims families answers about what has happened. The work of removing the bodies and transporting them to hospitalfor postmortem examinations continues. Essex police said they would not comment on what they called speculation about the nationalities of those who had tragically lost their lives. Andy moore, bbc news. Im joined now via webcam by dr tamsin barber, a lecturer in political sociology at Oxford Brookes university. She specialises in migration and the british vietnamese population. Thanks forjoining us. It is heartbreaking to see what has happened this week. How popular still is the uk as a destination for people from vietnam . Still is the uk as a destination for people from vietnam . It is a really popular destination, i would say it is probably the most popular destination in europe. Vietnamese migrants know that they come to the uk, they are likely to be able to secure work and possibly be able to secure work and possibly be able to secure work and quite a lot of money to send back to their families in vietnam. It is highly sought after. Many migrants might be stopping working in countries on transit to the uk, but the uk is the ultimate destination for them. And why is that . In the uk, there is high demand for low Skilled Labour in a restau ra nts, demand for low Skilled Labour in a restaurants, vietnamese demand for low Skilled Labour in a restau ra nts, vietna mese restau ra nts, vietnamese nail salons. And also the cannabis industry. There are lots of opportunities to find work. But there is no legal route in for low skilled vietnamese migrants working in the uk. So this is obviously having to be done through these very circuitous routes and perilous journeys. And the cannabis industry can bea journeys. And the cannabis industry can be a lucrative industry to work in. That is if you are trying to work money to pay back debts that yourfamily may work money to pay back debts that your family may have raised to get your family may have raised to get you here to europe. We have heard this week about the amount of money that families are paying, sometimes up that families are paying, sometimes up to £30,000. Ham they raise that amount . How do they raise that amount . How do they raise that amount . One way is to sell land, sell property as well. 0bviously huge risks, gambles being taken by vietnamese families who view this as their one opportunity to send a Family Member abroad to earn money. When thinking about communities where there is poverty, one of the community that the young woman came from, there were environmental disasters there. The fishing industry has been destroyed. Some families are trying to find ways to generate income. We are just looking at the photos of one of the young women that we have been hearing about and the heartbreaking messages that she seems to have sent to her family. Do these young people with otherfamilies family. Do these young people with other families realise the family. Do these young people with otherfamilies realise the risks that they may be taking . |j otherfamilies realise the risks that they may be taking . I think that they may be taking . I think that they may be taking . I think that they are aware of the risks. They are aware that the journey is long and precarious. But many of the migrants are willing to take their chance to embark on this journey and earn this money. I would say that i think some of the worst Case Scenarios and worst stories are migrants who are taking this journey and dont reach back home. Migrants wa nt to and dont reach back home. Migrants want to send a positive message back to theirfamilies want to send a positive message back to their families and communities, especially if so much money has been raised to send them abroad. So the often raised to send them abroad. So the ofte n wa nt raised to send them abroad. So the often want to save face to their families and communities and show that they have been successful in their migration journey. That they have been successful in their migrationjourney. So i think they are aware, but sometimes the worst case stories do not get passed back to in families. And for people who think hang on a minute, we obviously massively sympathise with what has happened in this tragic set of cases, wherever people are from, but illegal migration cannot be allowed, and we have to have borders. Perhapsjust allowed, and we have to have borders. Perhaps just the allowed, and we have to have borders. Perhapsjust the borders need to be much more strongly enforced. I think the problem is that we obviously do need low Skilled Labour here in the uk, and there is a lot of low skilled work to be done. The problem is they are not the routes for low Skilled Labour migrants to come and work in the uk. To the immigration system is forcing people to take these very precarious journeys into the forcing people to take these very precariousjourneys into the uk forcing people to take these very precarious journeys into the uk and then once in the uk, their experience is rendered even more precarious as they are trying to work in the industries they are working in and send money home but at the same time trying to avoid being arrested and sent back home in which case if they are, the situation for them and their families becomes much worse. In the last few years, there has been a massive focus on migration mixed in with the brexit decision and the debate. Do you think if the changes that might come as a result of brexit will change either the demand oi brexit will change either the demand or the supply of people coming from countries like vietnam . Or the supply of people coming from countries like vietnam . In principle, the idea being that if we leave the eu then we can take on migrants from a wider range of countries around the world. However, iam not countries around the world. However, i am not optimistic about that. I dont think that will make the uk more welcoming to low skilled migrants from third world countries. I would like to think that change would happen, but i would like to think that change would happen, but i dont see that happening in the hostile climate in which we are living at the moment in the uk. Andjust which we are living at the moment in the uk. And just briefly, there has been a lot of criticism from refugee groups that there is not a legal way of refugees or Asylum Seekers coming to countries like the uk. And that presumably facilitates the whole criminal trafficking gang process which also brings in economic migrants illegally. Yeah, i think the problem is that there is often a lot of conflation between these different categories and different migrant groups. In this debate, we see a lot of conflation when we are talking about vietnamese migrants being trafficked and smuggled. Whether there is coercion. And what we see is a combination of Different Things within many categories. They might consent to one part of the journey then the planned changes and then they are coerced into situations they didnt expect to find themselves in. People might find themselves in. People might find themselves in. People might find themselves fleeing political or economic reasons, but i also have but they also have other aspirations for themselves and their families. So the categories of migrants are never really that clear cut on the ground and in reality. Thank you very much for your time today. The governor of california has declared an emergency in two counties because of two rapidly spreading wildfires. The Emergency Services have struggled to tackle the fires that have forced about 40,000 people to leave their homes and left many more without power. Sophie long reports. High temperatures and dry winds feed flames and fear as california burns. With gusts of up to 70 miles an hour, new blazes are sparked before others can be contained. The fire causing most concern is burning through famed vineyards at kincade, about 70 miles north of san francisco. You could actually hear the wind coming down the canyon, over my neighbours, from here. It sounded like a rocket. Another is the tick fire, about 30 miles north of los angeles. As tens of thousands of people were told to abandon their homes, memories are evoked of the devastating wildfires of the past two years that killed more than 100 people. The threat to human life here is real. Last year, the deadliest fire in californias history was sparked by the main Energy Company pg es cables. In recent days, it cut off power to hundreds of thousands of homes to prevent this happening again. But now, it says a high voltage tower was reported damaged close to where the kincade fire started. It is infuriating beyond words to live in a state as innovative and extraordinarily entrepreneurial and capable as the state of california, to be living in an environment where we are seeing this kind of disruption and these kinds of blackouts. Much of california is under imminent threat of fire due to the hot, dry conditions, and the danger is increasing. Weather forecasts for the weekend show winds could get even stronger. Sophie long, bbc news, los angeles. The billionaire owners of the telegraph, david and frederick barclay, are reportedly in the early stages of selling the newspaper. The brothers, who are in their eighties, bought the paper in 2004 for more than £660 million. Our business correspondent, katie prescott, is with me now. Is it really up for sale . It was news to journalists and the telegraph and i spoke to them this morning. But we understand from sources close to the brothers that they are, over the next couple of years, looking to unwind their assets. The telegraph being just one of those, in order to pass their wealth down to future generations. So the owned the telegraph, they owned the ritz hotel, that is already up for sale. They also own a Delivery Company and shop. The telegraph home to the current prime ministers former column. Politically, it has been very pro brexit. The newspapers in this country play a big part in politics, dont they . So whoever buys this paper will be keenly watched. Goldman over the years, they will have been rumours of a telegraph sale. Over the years there have been rumours of a sale of there have been rumours of a sale of the newspaper. The profits were down 496 the newspaper. The profits were down 4 last year. When the rumours have circulated, the buyers who have been fingered have beenjeff bays os the founder of amazon, and the owner of the independent newspaper. So i imagine their names will come into the fray again at this time. Fascinating. Thank you for that. The government has repeated its call for mps to back a general election later this year. Mps are expected to vote on the question of another poll on monday. Mrjohnson says he wants to hold one in december, if the eu offers a brexit delay until the end of january. 0ur political correspondent, tom barton, explained where things are at the moment. There is a mexican stand off between government, mps, and the eu, with no one wanting to make the first move. Yesterday we had a conclusion of sorts between eu ambassadors saying that they would agree to an extension, but not saying how long that extension would be. That matters because borisjohnson has said he wants to hold an election on december 12. He needs the support of opposition parties. And they have said they will only commit if it happens before the brexit deadline. That is a deadline that we do not yet know the date of. So now we are no clear whether Boris Johnson will get his Election Force of his ministers today saying that there should be an election and the opposition, Jeremy Corbyn in particular, you need to get on board. When theresa may was prime minister, or he would talk about, and one of the things he was talking about constantly with this need for about constantly with this need for a general election. Now he seems to have changed his mind and is a saying that that is because we havent ta ken no saying that that is because we havent taken no deal off the table. When he was asking for a general election for two years, our policy was that no deal was better than a bad deal. So no deal has always been a potential outcome. And he hasjust changed his mind. I dont think it has anything to do with the status of no deal. As for the date, the eu ambassadors will continue working over the weekend. We expect to hear from them on monday or maybe tuesday. There is a real disagreement between many eu leaders on how long this extension should be. Whether it should be, as the opposition want, to the end of the year orjanuary. 0r opposition want, to the end of the year orjanuary. Or as the french president Emmanuel Macron is said to prefer, a much shorter extension, possibly a few days or weeks into november. So lots of questions, very few a nswers. November. So lots of questions, very few answers. The only thing we know for sure is that borisjohnsons do ordie for sure is that borisjohnsons do or die deadline of thursday this week is almost certainly dead. And on monday, the immediate question is going to be to see how labour votes. Why would they abstain rather than vote against . Essentially, labour dont want to be tarred with the brush of avoiding an election. They certainly dont want to be seen to vote against a general election. Because politically it looks. Politically it looks terrible. The opposition saying they actively dont want an election. The way the law is constructive, the fixed term parliaments act which governments the fixed term parliaments act which governs how elections can be called. By abstaining, their votes count against an election because they are not counting towards the two thirds majority. Soak for labour, they are in a pretty tricky position. But voting against an election is something they want to avoid. Hello there. Heavy rain across england and wales will slowly start to ease as it pushes its way south and east through the remainder of the afternoon. It is going to take its time in doing so, arriving towards the capital by the middle to the end of the afternoon. Behind it, cloudier but drier conditions. Sunny spells and scattered showers remain throughout the day. Through scotland, some of those showers turning increasingly wintry. It will be a windy day for all, particularly down across the south west. Colder to the north with seven to 9 degrees. We cling onto that mild air in the south east despite that rain arriving later on. That clears away through the night, skies stay clear with showers continuing into the far north. But temperatures are expected to fall away. Low single figures in some sheltered rural places. Dont forget to put the clocks back, we all gain one hours sleep. And we all gain some sunshine tomorrow. Blue skies, dry, just a scattering of showers continuing into the north. But colder for all. England are into their first Rugby World Cup final in 12 years after beating new zealand 19 7 in yokohama.
