It is time frankly that the opposition summed up the nerve to submit themselves to the judgement of our collective boss, which is the people of the uk. And ulurus final ascent tourists prepare to climb australias sacred red rock for the last time. Live from our studios in london and singapore. This is bbc world news. Its newsday. Welcome. Its 8am in singapore and one am in britain, where police say the 39 people found dead in a refrigerated lorry were all chinese nationals. The container had arrived in essex from belgium, and was collected by a lorry driver from Northern Ireland. He is being questioned by detectives on suspicion of murder. Forensic teams have begun the task of removing the bodies of 31 men and eight women from the container. Ed thomas reports. Under police escort, and by private ambulance at night, the first of the 39 chinese nationals have been removed from the lorry trailer at the port of tilbury docks. Police said the priority was preserving their respect and dignity. An unwanted reminder, too, of what happened nearly 20 years ago in dover. Here, 58 chinese immigrants suffocated in a lorry. It took months for all those who died to be identified. Sam doesnt want to remember. He moved to grays from china a0 years ago. When i heard the news this morning, all the 39 people of chinese nationality isay, why, how . It has happened again. He lives and works close to where the bodies were found this week. It said 39 people died, struggling in freezing cold in the container, in the dark and no one helped. This is now a Major International investigation. Belgian Authorities Say the container arrived into the port of zeebrugge at about 2 30pm on tuesday afternoon. It left there, heading across the channel, arriving at purfleet in essex, and at 1 05am yesterday, the trailer was collected by a lorry. Half an hour later, ambulance staff discovered all 39 bodies inside the container. Vic makes the same journey to the port of purfleet. These are the checks he does every day. Obviously, if anything was in there, you would see it straightaway. Ive seen people jumping out of trailers, jumping out of containers, running around. What are the feelings amongst drivers . Everyone is terrified that they are going to find someone in their vehicles, or worse. In 2016, the National Crime agency warned that smuggling gangs were moving from major hubs like dover to smaller ports like purfleet. They will only be caught if they get out of the trailers. This man worked at purfleet at the time of the nca report. He didnt want to show his face. It happened daily. And what was the largest number of people . The largest one i saw was a group of vietnamese. There were 30, 32 of them, crammed into a little 10 by 12 room. You just became used to it, as horrible as it sounds. Some of them had broken legs, one that was trying to run away from security onsite, not big security, about four people, with crutches, trying to run away, some holding children. And the security at purfleet . Nowhere near enough. Tonight, police are still questioning the lorry driver on suspicion of murder. He has been named in Northern Ireland as 25 year old mo robinson. Police say it will take until the weekend to remove all the bodies and to begin to find the answers they need. Ed thomas, bbc news, purfleet. Investigations are now turning to china and the challenge to identify the victims. Correspondent, john sudworth. The chinese authorities tell us they are still trying to gather information. For now, we know nothing about who these people were or where exactly in china they came from. There is a profound sense of shock being expressed on social media that Something Like this could have happened again. In previous incidents, the 58 people found dead in the back of a lorry in dover back in 2000, for example, or the 21 Chinese People who drowned off morecombe in 2004, in those cases, they were brought to the uk by the snake head gangs, a notorious chinese criminal underworld that runs these people smuggling operations. What is interesting is that in recent years, demand was thought to have been falling away, the chinese Economy Today provides far more opportunities than it used to and even for those who still look for work in the black market economies overseas, today, flights and visas and passports are far more easy to come by. We will need to wait for more information but what this dreadful discovery in essex may tell us is that for the most needy and vulnerable workers here in china, those criminal networks are still very much in operation. Lets take a look at some of the days other news. The british Prime Minister, borisjohnson, says he wants the Uk Parliament to agree to hold a general election on december the twelfth. He said that in exchange, mps will have until november the sixth when parliament would have to be dissolved to discuss his brexit bill. This is a party, Jeremy Corbyn and the labour party that have called repeatedly for a general election. They have called for an election to be delayed until there is a deal in brexit, until there is an extension. They have got their Hearts Desire and now is the time to be reasonable, to agree, that with the extra time that would be available, a considerable chunk of time, for parliament to get together, for mps across the house to come together, look at this bill properly, get it done, but agree also that we can then go to a general election. The leader of the Opposition Labour Party says he will wait until European Union leaders decide on a brexit delay. Jeremy corbyn added that he will only support a general election if a no deal brexit that is the uk leaving the eu without an agreement is ruled out. Take no deal off of the table and we absolutely support the election. I have been calling for an election ever since the last one because this country needs one in order to deal with all of the social injustice issues but no deal must be taken off the table. Also making news today. The us Vice President has accused the National Basketball association and sports firm nike of bowing to chinese pressure and muzzling criticism of beijing. In the same speech, mike pence attacked chinas diplomatic and trade policies, also adding that it had violated the rights of people in hong kong. But he insisted america wants to avoid a deepening confrontation with china. Fresh trade talks are due on friday. Beijing has still not taken significant action to improve our economic relationship. And on many other issues we raise, beijings behaviour has become more aggressive and destabilising. And take a look at these pictures from california where more than half a million homes and businesses are facing powers cuts this week as wildfires rage in the state. The kincade fire, which is being driven by strong winds, has so far engulfed more than 10,000 acres of land. Hundreds of people have been ordered to evacuate. Lets return to the big story here in london british Prime Minister says he will give mps more time to debate his brexit deal, if they agree to a 12 december election. 0ur uk Political Correspondent helen catt explained the thinking behind borisjohnsons latest move. We have seen him try and get one through the house of commons twice and failed to do so, so his general argument is that this is a parliament thatjust cannot agree on brexit, it cannot agree a way forward, so he needs to start again. But of course, we did see he introduced his Withdrawal Agreement bill and did get some backing for it to move to the next stage. So arguably he can get it through but his worry is that he cannot get it through entirely in the house of commons in its current makeup. Not quite in the form that he would like it. His argument is that this parliament cannot agree so we need a new one. What effect does all of this have on the timetable for brexit and any possible delay . The date still currently set for brexit is a week today, the 31st of october. But it is pretty clear that it is unlikely to happen with a deal, and assuming that the eu grants an extension, as it is thought it will over the next few days, that will mean that brexit day is pushed back slightly further. That is what you are looking at in the time scale for this, but what borisjohnson has said is that if parliament agrees in a vote on monday to hold an election on december the 12th, then he will bring his bill back to parliament, he currently has it on pause, and then he says he will make available all possible time up until the point where parliament would have to be dissolved, which is the 6th of november, to try and pass that bill. He said that could mean sitting fridays and weekends, although even with all of that it still doesnt give very long compared to the amount of time the parliament would usually have to look at a bill of this magnitude, dealing with this subject. So the idea is that perhaps it could be pushed to before the 6th of november, and he would make that time available. But opposition parties i think are quite wary of that. If it goes to an election, an Election Campaign in the uk is at least five weeks long. What we will see is Parliament Dissolved on the 6th of november, there would be a five week campaign, election day on december the 12th. Briefly, if there is no vote for a general election, what does that mean . What happens then . That is the big question. It effectively leaves Boris Johnson trapped in downing street if you like without being able to pass legislation because he has not got a majority in parliament. Potentially not able to get his brexit deal through and him saying he wouldnt be putting it to parliament anyway. What he said he will do is keep bringing day after day after day after day different motions to try and get an election and he wouldnt be putting any other business before the house of commons. So then really the house of commons would be virtually paralysed until the opposition say we can have the election. It is an uncertain outlook i think for the next few weeks. On friday the climb to the top of uluru, the famous red rock in central australia, will close. Indigenous people have long asked tourists not to scale the ancient sandstone monolith because of its spiritual significance. But the closure of the climb isnt universally popular. The bbcs phil mercer reports from uluru. Rising from the desert, uluru is breathtaking. Indigenous australians say it has a power and a spirituality like nowhere else. But these visitors are here to do more thanjust look. Thousands have poured in for the chance to reach the summit for one last time before the climb closes for good. I pushed a trip back that i wanted to do down the track in life but pushed it forward to get up here now. I know it was closing down so i wanted to be the last one up there. I want to have a look. Local Community Leaders have long requested that tourists do not climb. Right now, there are hundreds and hundreds of people climbing to the top of uluru. They have been queueing here since the Early Morning and indigenous elders say they would prefer us not to show any pictures of those tourists climbing on the steep track to my right. The reason for that is they believe those images would be culturally insensitive. And many of the visitors who ignore pleas from Community Leaders to stay off the rocks are also accused of disregarding indigenous culture. All they do is just come, ignore the tradition and go straight to the climb and then go. In 1985, control of the rock was handed back to Aboriginal People by the australian government. Out of respect for indigenous culture, most visitors keep their feet firmly on the red desert floor. Because of the fact that it is a sacred place and i dont feel like being sacrilegious i would rather walk around. 0ver many years, the number of people wanting to climb has actually declined and before the climb closure was announced, it was less than 10 who actually climbed uluru. The closure has been divisive. Some believe the choice to climb should remain. I understand it is a sensitive topic, my view is that should be for all australians and ive got no problem with people climbing it. It was a spiritual at the top and incredible and my boyfriend proposed, so it was pretty good experience closing the climb will bring to an end years of distress for aboriginal groups. As one elder said, it is time the rock had a rest. Phil mercer, bbc news. And phil mercerjoins us now. Todayis today is the day the ban takes effect. Telus from our huge crowds scrambling up the sacred red rock . Not at the moment. It is too windy. They had a Safety Assessment a few hours ago and rangers deemed that it would be too dangerous to let several hundred climbers try to scale uluru. We have these assessments throughout the day and another one is doing about ten minutes time. At the moment, you might be able to tell it is pretty windy out here in central australia, pretty warm as well. They close the climb yesterday and thursday because it was nudging a0 celsius. So there are still a few hundred people at the base of uluru who are hoping to do the climb for one last time before it closes in a few hours time. You will be able to see uluru behind me and that is a distance of about 15 km, so even from this distance, you get the sense of how imposing this giant red rock is. Amazing view behind you. Thank you, phil. Its semifinal weekend at the Rugby World Cup with new zeland, england, south africa and wales still vying for the trophy. Mariko 0i has been speakingt to brett gosper the ceo of world rugby. She began by asking him aboutjapan hosting the tournament for the first time. Its been a fabulous tournament, fantastic atmosphere, and all the stadia really being embraced by the japanese people. The japanese teams played its role in hosting the tournament and playing so brilliantly and the brilliant brand of rugby they have been playing. It has been very exciting. As you said, japans brave blossoms played incredibly well. But this is a country where baseball and football are more popular. Were you at all concerned about having the Rugby World Cup injapan in asia for the first time . I think its been a long time coming. Its been planned for ten years. It was a bold decision, taken ten years ago, to come here. Although it turned out amazingly, at the time, there were some questions. It has truly exceeded our expectations for a world cup. Indeed, none of my friends knew anything about rugby and now they are all experts. Ive also noticed fickle fans trending online on social media. New and fickle fans of rugby. You said it is up tojapan to sustain these or its popularity, to sustain the popularity, but do you think the country has the infrastructure to sustain not just the popularity of the sport, but also its development . I think that is what they have to work towards. Weve had a lot of meetings with them prior the world cup and through the world cup and will continue to support them beyond this world cup. To ensure they put in place that infrastructure that captures this passion and interest in a way that transforms into participation. But maintaining that Fan Engagement is important. Its important for the world rugby too. This really has become the third biggest commercial market for rugby behind the United Kingdom and france. It is very important we retain and increase that momentum as we go forward and we have to provide opportunities for the japanese rugby to play against top teams and to keep massaging that audience that is so keen now in rugby that were not really in existence before. What is your plan to take the world cup to other countries . Can they make the same impact . I think it gives us the courage to make decisions like the one that was me ten years ago. That was made ten years ago. There is no question the resilience, the size, the scale and globalness of a world cup means that the number of markets you can take it to now have increased. And of course this being a strong commercial market, the windfall is great for sport, and for us to invest back in the sport. There are other markets like the United States which have shown some interest which could be, now given this experience, very viable propositions in the future. And who knows . Eventually one day back in asia with china or another market in asia, but certainlyjapan is the third biggest rugby commercial market that would be lining up in the future to re host the world cup. This having been such a successful and positive experience for everyone. You have been watching newsday. Im ben bland in london. Looking forward to the we matches. But i would say the big winner here has been to japan. The blossoms really took the rugby world by storm. And im rico hizon in singapore. Stay with us. Are you in a hurry . Soon there could be help from above as singapores first air taxis take their maiden flights. Going back to rico, who are you rooting for . Who do you think will win . Ithink rooting for . Who do you think will win . I think all teams, new zealand, england, wales, and south africa all have an even chance to win. Very diplomatic answer. I would say who i am supporting, but im hedging my bets because i have a friend from new zealand, and south africa and new zealand, and south africa and new england. Whoever wins, i have a party to go to. See how i do it . And before we go, take a look at these pictures of the us gymnast, simone biles, bringing a touch of acrobatic magic ahead of game two of the mlb world series. The four time olympic gold medallist performed a backflip before she threw out the first pitch in the second game of the world series contest between the Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals at minute maid park, in houston, texas. I hope to see you do a back flip in those jeans. Maybe next i hope to see you do a back flip in thosejeans. Maybe next time. See you soon. Hello. Theres a battle between cold and mild air taking place across the uk at the moment to see which wins out for the weekend. Spoiler, it is the cold air. Already in place across northern parts of the uk. 0n the dividing line between the two before the cold air wins and head south, some of us are about to get a lot of heavy rain through friday into early saturday, and the moors of southwest england and wales and Northern England from this waving weather front. Finally as it does clear by the end of saturday, from southeast england, that is when the cold air travels further south. Already in place across the northern half of the uk, a touch of frost for you to start the day, and a mild start the further south you are. A fine start for many of us, a few showers in scotland. Here comes the rain from the southwest and wales into the midlands, especially the west midlands, the eastern side of Northern Ireland and southern scotland. The uk top and tail by strengthening winds with coastal gales as well. So it is turning much wetter for some of us and we still have those big temperature contrast across the uk but quite a lot of hill fog down towards the southwest of the uk in the mild air. Lets focus in on the rain. These totals you see here are some of the higher totals we may see in the higher ground. Lower levels will not as much as this but with that much lower levels will not see as much as this but with that much rain falling for some, the potential for some flooding and travel disruptions, there are some met Office Yellow warnings in force and details on the website. So the possibility of seeing some disruption to travellers to start the weekend. This is how we start saturday, away from the area of rain, clearer skies elsewhere, in scotland, still a few showers, and a course may be a touch of frost too. The rain does eventually move south on saturday, away from the wettest parts of england and wales, to give a wet afternoon towards east anglia and southeast england. Elsewhere brightest skies developing for many with a few showers around, and the cold air pushing further south. Through saturday night into sunday, get rid of this front, get rid of the rain, the blue is in charge, the cold air has won the battle. It will not be bitterly cold. As you can see from this, on sunday, a lot of land showing up. That means it is clear, a bit of patchy cloud but quite a bit of sunshine coming through on sunday. Still a few showers dotted about into scotland, still quite breezy out there. Yes, temperatures are coming down, but by sunday, its drier and sunnier. Im ben bland with bbc news. Our top story.
