Down just yet, not after yesterdays events. Westminster is setting up four more battles to come, but ministers say they are confident that the Prime Minister wont be steered off course. The game changer this week, which was hardly talked about at all, is that he has defied the people who doubt and got a deal. We appear to have the numbers to get this through. The only question is, why arent we getting on with it because might it is after Boris Johnson had to, by law, send this letter asking for a delay. But where there would be a signature normally there would be a signature normally there was a blank. Another letter makes it clear he thinks any extension would be damaging. Labour is not impressed. The low is very clear. He should have signed one letter in accordance with the law. He is being childlike. There are opposition plans again to try for a further referendum. We need an amendment to say that whatever deal gets through, it should be subject toa gets through, it should be subject to a referendum where that deal is put to the public and they are asked, do you want to leave on these terms, or would you rather remain in the eu . So, next week is going to be busy. Grate the ayes to the right, 322, the noes to the left, 306. Mps have made it clear that they are no pushover after voting yes to do to withhold any approval of Boris Johnsons deal. This lot isnt easily pushed around either. Will eu leaders grant a further delay you a further delay. My own gut instinct has been all the way along that if we got to the end and we were going to crash out otherwise, and we had made a request for extension, very probably you would say you would have an extension. Super saturday has left its mark, though some think it was all a waste of time. A clear way forward hasnt shone through just yet. Jessica parker, bbc news. Our correspondent adam fleming is in brussels. The Prime Minister sent his letters to the eu what has been the reaction there . Eu ambassadors had a 15 minute meeting this morning, which shows you how little they wa nted which shows you how little they wanted brexit to wreck their weekend, where mainly they were talking about the process of approving the deal on the eu side, which includes a few bureaucratic hurdles and a big vote in the european parliament. The chief negotiator Michelle Barnier said that yesterday in parliament amounted to a hold up, which was better than a rejection of the deal, and then the two letters arrived. As far as the eu is concerned, that is a request from the uk for a delay. Donald tusk will spend a couple of days talking to other leaders, which means the eu has a couple of days to observe what happens in parliament before they have to make a decision 01 before they have to make a decision or commit to anything. Adam, thank you very much indeed. Adam fleming in brussels. And jessica is here now talk us through what is going to happen next. The government is going to try and doa the government is going to try and do a couple of things over the coming days. As we were hearing a moment ago, to try to bring forward the legislation to implement its brexit deal. That may be no easy feat. Mps with their own ideas are likely to push forward amendments. But ministers making confident noises that they think they have the numbers, and they are sticking by this october the 31st deadline. Another plan tomorrow, to try to get mps to approve the deal in principle. Thats what borisjohnson was trying to do yesterday. Downing street hoping tomorrow that they will get the chance to present a binary choice to mps on the deal. That will be up to the speaker as to whether that is allowed. Meantime, i think number ten will be hoping to use this radio silence from the eu to put pressure on mps worried about a to put pressure on mps worried about 3110 to put pressure on mps worried about a no deal to support the agreement. Jessica, thank you very much indeed. Two 17 year old boys have died after being stabbed in Milton Keynes. Thames Valley Police say they were called to a property just before midnight. There have again been violent clashes between police and protesters on the streets of hong kong, with thousands of people marching despite a police ban. The pro democracy protestors are increasingly concerned that china is seeking greater control over hong kong. Officers fired tear gas and used water canon after shops, banks and metro stations were vandalised. Andy moore reports. There is a familiar pattern now after 20 weeks of protests like this. A large, peaceful crowd marched in defiance of the authorities. And then it turned violent as a Smaller Group of demonstrators clashed with the police. Tear gas canisters were fired and thrown back. Police sprayed the protesters with blue dye from a water cannon. It not only marks them but also contains a pepper spray that burns on contact with the skin. Fires were lit at the entrance to this police station. And all this in the centre of one of the citys busiest shopping district. One protester said, the more they suppress, the more we resist. And so it goes on, an escalating pattern of violence from both sides, with no end in sight. Andy moore, bbc news. Wales have made it through to the semi finals of the Rugby World Cup injapan after a nail biting victory over france. Our Sports Editor dan roan was watching the match. Wales arrived here full of expectation. Six nations grand slam winners, and beating in japan. Unbeaten in japan. These days, there are Firm Favourites in such big games. Now they had to live up to that status and extend the farewell of their legendary coach, warren gatland, in this, his last tournament in charge. He wont have enjoyed this though france starting superbly as first the giant sebastien vahaamahina, and then Charles Ollivon put them 12 0 up inside eight minutes. Which france would turn up . Now we knew. Wales needed to respond and, in a frenetic opening, immediately did so. Aaron wainwright pouncing and then bursting clear. With officials under pressure to clamp down on high tackles, Ross Moriarty was always going to pay for this. And, while he was in the sin bin, his team were punished too. Virimi vakatawas try giving the french a nine point lead at the end of a thrilling half. Now france needed to keep their discipline. Instead, an act of violence as daft as it was dangerous by vahaamahina. The fans showed what they thought, the officials agreed. France would play the last half an hour a man down. Although games can hinge on such moments, wales struggled to make their advantage count. But, with the final whistle approaching, the ball bubbled loose and moriarty rescued his team. Dan biggars conversion edging wales ahead for the first time. Frances heroic defiance was over. Theyd left it late, theyd ridden their luck but wales had dug deep into their resolve and somehow found a way. A second home nation through to the semifinals. All of wales will be breathing a huge sigh of relief tonight after one of their teams most important and dramatic victories. They were far from their best here but, having found a way to prevail, they will now believe they can reach a first ever World Cup Final and give Warren Gatlands long and successful tenure its defining moment. And in the other rugby quarter final, south africa were beating japan 26 3 with just over five minutes left. Thats all from us. The next news on bbc one is at ten to six , bye for now. Well, there were more scenes of u nrest last well, there were more scenes of unrest last night late into the night. There were some arrests and, as you mentioned, this is the sixth day of demonstrations of unrest that we have seen. However, we should point out that the last nights protest was slightly calmer than some of the scenes we have seen throughout the week. There were Peaceful Protesters who made an effort to separate more violent groups from the police and that managed to calm things a little bit. Today, once again the city authorities cleaning up the streets. They have got their employees out cleaning up the street, cleaning up burnt rubble hello. This is bbc news. The mother of a Junior Doctor who went missing off the devon coast two years ago, says her daughter has been let down by the nhs. Dr Lauren Phillips mother, andrea graham, who is herself a former nhs manager, has called on the Health Secretary to do more to support those on the front line of our hospitals. Marie ashby reports. Andrea graham comes to woolacombe bay in devon to feel close to her daughter. This is where her car was found abandoned. Dr Lauren Phillips, who was 26, had told her mother she was worried about starting a newjob in a e in bristol. Doctors have a fear that if they admitted they had struggled with a particular situation at work, or if they admitted that they were struggling from Mental Health problems, that that might be taken into account in a future career, or it might demonstrate that actually, theyre not Strong Enough to be a doctor. Lauren did seek help, and was advised to sign up with a gp. The Nhs Practitioner Health service has supported thousands of doctors in london over the last 11 years. This month, it has been extended across england to cope with demand. Its medical director is a government advisor. Every year, if we compare it with the last year, we have had 100 more patients, so we are doing something to these wonderful young people, and i think what we are doing to them is not showing them kindness and compassion, and we are treating them as if they dont matter. One doctor every three weeks takes their own life in england. Currently, the nhs is struggling with record demand and a shortage of 10,000 medics. Do you accept that understaffing has put more pressure onJunior Doctors . Yes, of course i do, and i see it in hospitals. And we are hiring more doctors, partly because of the pressures on them. And i want to make sure that everybody who goes into work as a doctor gets the support they need but also, people you know, when they sign up to become a doctor in the first place, they are signing up to work and give their working life to the care of others, and we need to care for them. Dr Lauren Phillips body has never been found. I dont have anywhere to go to grieve for lauren. I cant sit beside a grave. But this has to be a more beautiful place to be and to think about lauren. Marie ashby reporting, and you can see more on that story on inside out, south west, at 07. 30 on monday and later, on the bbc iplayer. The us secretary of defence says all remaining american troops in Northern Syria are expected to be relocated to iraq. Turkey has been carrying out an offensive against Kurdish Forces in Northern Syria following president trumps decision to withdraw us forces from the border region. A temporary ceasefire has been declared but both turkey and the kurds have accused each other of breaches. Its reported that up to 300,000 people have fled their homes since the offensive started. Our correspondent Barbara Plett usher is in turkey and spoke to me earlier. We are in day three now of the ceasefire which is actually a temporary halt to the turkish offensive into these areas just across the border in syria. They stopped the offensive in order to give the kurdish fighters a chance to withdraw 30 kilometres back. Now, those kurdish fighters have not done that yet. They say that one of the big problems is the turks are besieging the main town where the conflict has been. They want to make sure that the wounded and the fighters are evacuated from that before they pull out from this zone. The turks say they are not besieging the town. Having said that, they have finally managed to get a convoy in last night to pull out the wounded and are hoping to get another convoy in today and if that gets completed then perhaps we will see this pull back take place. In the meantime, there have been sporadic clashes reported. And i mentioned what is happening to the us troops who have been withdrawn from syria, which many people say it gave the green light to turkey in the first place to start this offensive, what more do we know about them being relocated . That is something that the defence secretary i think is coming to the region to sort out. He is on his way and he has said on route that they will be relocated to western iraq and from there they would be used to help protect iraq but also to continue operations against the Islamic State group. Because that is one of the biggest concerns about the latest conflict, the United States was allied with these Kurdish Forces in North Eastern syria to try and keep the Islamic State group from making a resurgence. So now that alliance has been disrupted, it is not clear what is going to happen to that. So he didnt rule out the possibility of these troops carrying out Counterterrorism Operations from iraq, but i think hes going to be talking about those kinds of details and, as he mentioned, the troops are still being withdrawn. They have been consolidated in a large base to the west of the border and also some places in the east and are going to be continuing to pull out, probably mostly to iraq, although us officials said maybe not all of them. It would still be up to what host countries wanted. President trump has said he is abandoning his plan to host the 2020 g7 summit at his florida golf resort. It comes after democrats and others said the decision was evidence of the president misusing his office for personal gain. From washington Chris Buckler reports. White house officials said that they knew there would be criticism when they announced the president was planning to host World Leaders at the Trump National doral near miami. But they insisted it was the best location for next summers g7 summit and the event would be staged at cost price. But many pointed out the resort would also benefit from a huge amount of publicity. We spoke about the possibility of whether or not the president could do it at no cost, but there were difficulties doing that way but also charging it at market rates so they are doing it at cost. It has been dramatically cheaper for us to do it there compared to the other final sites we had. In a series of posts on twitter, donald trump said he even offered to provide the facility for free, but because of what he described as the irrational hostility of the media and his political opponents, they would now be looking for another site. The president ial retreat camp david is one of the other places considered as a location. Chris buckler, bbc news. The mayor of santiago in chile, says that three people have been killed after a supermarket was set alight, as violent protests continue. The demonstrations have spread to other parts of the country. They began in response to a planned rise in metro train prices. The president has promised to suspend the move. Gareth barlow reports. What started as a protest against travel fares has escalated, with chileans angry over huge wealth inequality. The capital should be quiet as theres a state of emergency, but instead the streets are ringing with the sound of pots and pans a symbol of dissent which continued into the night amid the military controlled curfew. The announcement that soldiers would be used to protect people and their property marks the first time troops have been deployed to the streets since chile returned to democracy in 1990 following the military dictatorship. I remember the dictatorship. I was a kid. My parents and friends were very afraid of the army so seeing them in the street was very shocking. Them in the street was very shocking. The protests have brought chaos to parts of the capital. More than 300 people have been arrested and the metro is closed after it was heavily damaged. In an effort to quell the unrest, chiles president announced the fare hikes would be reversed. I want to announce today we will suspend the rise of the metro tickets. It will require the approval of the law and it must be done urgently. The protests are the worst in decades and the signs are it will take more than cheaper travel to restore calm to one of the regions wealthiest countries. Gareth barlow, bbc news. The longest nonstop commercial passenger flight has landed successfully in sydney. The qantas plane tookjust over 19 hours to fly direct from new york. The airline is considering whether to begin regular nonstop flights between the cities and its enlisted the help of University Researchers to find out how such a long flights affect passengers and crew. This is part of project sunrise and the first of three test flights that is going to come up with recommendations of how we manage pilot fatigue, how we actually manage passengerjet lag, and after 19 hours on the flight, i think weve gotten this right. One of the people on that flight was ben mutzabaugh, an aviation journalist for travel website and blog the points guy. Earlier he spoke to mayriam moshiri spoke to him earlier about how hes coping after the experience. Iam tired. I am tired. It was 19 hours and 16 minutes. And i am still awake here at ten tm local time. We landed at around eight this morning. Sol at ten tm local time. We landed at around eight this morning. So i am not feeling fresh. What happened on the flight . What did you do for the 19 hours . I was there as a journalist to observe but what quantas was doing with this flight was testing with passengers and crews. They had professors and some researchers on board and they were basically studying some of the facts and things that can cause jet lag and things that can cause jet lag and tiredness and fatigue on such a long flight like this. So it was pa rt long flight like this. So it was part of a normal flight, with long flight like this. So it was part of a normalflight, with people sitting in seat watching movies, but there were also people with monitors on and doing various tests to see how they were holding up. People we re how they were holding up. People were encouraged to do some exercise regularly . That is right. Apart from the sleeping hours. On a 19 hours flight. The sleeping hours. On a 19 hours flight. Every two hours out side that sleeping winter they were taken out of the back of the plane where they were doing stretches. It was a little unusual in that regard. Dancing the macarena, having exercise sessions, being closely monitored, that wouldnt happen on a normal long haulflight. Monitored, that wouldnt happen on a normal long haul flight. So monitored, that wouldnt happen on a normal long haulflight. So how realistic is it that this will become something of the norm . |j share become something of the norm . share your scepticism. The ceo told me on this fight that if they do launch these ultra long haul flight they are considering a special layout which will include a space for exercise or at least walking. So i believe they are considering it but i think the devil will be in the detail. It is like those piano bars we have heard since the 70s. Everyone talks about it but we have never seen one. I suspect if ouantas does launch these flights to london and new york from sydney we might see some extra space to allow people in economy to stretch out. But it will be interesting to see actually how much space they will how. Others have accused quantas how much space they will how. Others have accused ouantas of carrying out a big pr stunt. When i asked him directly about that, i think there is no getting around the fact that this has been a big thing for them. Not ina this has been a big thing for them. Not in a small part because they need their pilots. If they are eventually to try these flights, their pilots are going to have to go along. They will have to convince regulators that flight this long should be. That will certainly help their cause. Where this falls between pr stunt and legitimate research, i think you can have a debate on it, but there is probably a little of both at least. A travel writer recovering after that 19 hour flight. Cats, les mis, the phantom of the opera all shows enjoying huge success in londons west end and now disneys the lion king is celebrating a milestone. It made its way onto the west end stage on tuesday the 19th of october 1999 at the lyceum theatre. 20 years on and the production based on the 1994 animated film is one of the longest running musicals in west end history. Deborah godchaser is making her west end debut and took us backstage for a tour. My first time on stage, that was. It was so surreal. The whole show i was like, oh, my gosh, i am actually in the lion king, finally. A swing is a cast member that is required to learn a multiple amount of roles within the show. In the case of the lion king, that would be different characters such as the gazelle, zebras, lionesses, the cheetah. I must say, it is quite nerve racking. I have learned to control the nerves. I think i kind of go with it and trust the fact that i know the choreography and i know where to be. Well go downstairs to the bunker, i am going to show you where the magic happens. The magical bunker follow me. So this is the lioness costume. The heads are all hand painted. The silks are all hand dyed individually to make every single individual look different. The different beads come together to make this cool set and the white lines represent the underbelly of the lioness. These are the gazelles. They are all made out of carbon fibre. We have one on the right hand, one on the left hand and one on our heads in order to represent the herds moving together as they travel across the prairie land. These go on top of our heads. These are hung upside down to keep the shape of the grass. The first time i came on stage, the audience, the energy was just so surreal and so electrifying. I was very nervous. I think i guess i got over the fact that i was nervous because i was just like, iam in it, doing it. I guess as a swing you have so many other things to be thinking about such as where you are meant to be on stage, who you come after, which wing you exit or enter on. So i think so much about those things but i did try to enjoy it. By my third show i started to settle in and enjoy it and just, yeah, i cant remember what scene it was but ijust remember it was kind of quiet and my mum was literally like, that is my baby yeah now its time for a look at the weather. Not too much change through the rest of this afternoon. Cooler than it was yesterday. Northerly breezes. Lots of cloud across northern england. Cold and damp across the north east of england. Showers coming in across northern scotland. For large part of the country, dry and some sunshine. Showers and patchy rain. A lot of it will fade away overnight but thickening cloud is coming in from the near continent bringing rain from the south east corner and keep the temperature is up. Further north it will be quite cold. Scotland, frost, possibly 3 in the glens. More cloud as you move into england and wales. Patchy rain threatening these coastal areas, particularly in the morning. Cloud tending to break up to allow some trying to come through. Temperatures ten in the central belt and 1a degrees in the. There could be fog around in the south as well that could linger into tuesday morning. Hello this is bbc news with ben brown. The headlines.
