Who took her own life two years ago calls for more support for nhs staff. The Health Secretary says he is listening. I want to make sure that everybody who goes into work as a doctor gets it. A quick game of cricket for the duke and duchess of cambridge as they visit an orphanage in pakistan. And a wake up call for wales as france take the lead early in the Rugby World Cup quarter final. And our sunday morning edition of the papers is at 9. 35 this mornings reviewers are property and personal finance commentator Anne Ashworth and james rampton, features writer, at the independent. Good morning. Borisjohnson has sent a letter to the eu, asking for an extension to the uks withdrawal date. But hes refused to sign the document and hes also sent a second letter warning against any further delay. The Prime Minister was legally obliged to ask for an extension, after mps voted yesterday to withhold approval of his brexit deal, until all the necessary legislation was in place. Heres our Political Correspondent jonathan blake. Another decision and with it further delay. Mps voted yesterday to hold off approving Boris Johnsons brexit deal until all the laws to implement it had been passed. I will tell our friends and colleagues in the eu exactly what i have told everyone in the last 88 days that i have served as Prime Minister that further delay would be bad for this country, bad for our european union, and bad for democracy. Today is an historic day for parliament, because it said it will not be blackmailed by a Prime Minister who is apparently prepared, once again, to defy a law passed by this parliament. And so the Prime Minister was forced to request an extension to the brexit process. A letter sent, but not signed by Boris Johnson, read. A second letter was also sent, making clear the Prime Ministers view and the governments policy was that further delay would be bad for the uk and the eu. What was dubbed Super Saturday saw some angry scenes at westminster. Despite the request for delay, the government is keen to press on with its plans in an attempt to give mps another vote on the Prime Ministers deal on monday. Jonathan blake, bbc news, westminster. Meanwhile the ambassadors of the 27 other eu Member States are meeting in brussels. Our correspondent, adam fleming is there. So, adam, they are meeting and talking. They have got two letters, not one but two from Boris Johnson to think about. What is the reaction in brussels . Yes, the meeting of ambassadors started about 30 minutes ago. I dont think it will be very long, they wont want to spend much of their weekend devoted to brexit but this will be about the ratification process for a deal on the eu side. There are a few bureaucratic and legal hurdles that need to be done, letters that the eu have descend around and then they pass the deal over to the European Parliament to be ratified and people are concerned a delay to the approval by the British Parliament will knock on to the European Parliament because they will not sign off on it until westminster has. The European Parliament is sitting in strasbourg this week but not the following week. Im is tight on the eu side to get the deal through but they are busting a gut to cut all of the bureaucratic corners they can to get the deal through. They will now have to have a conversation about what to do with these letters to borisjohnson but these letters to borisjohnson but the Prime Minister has made it easy for the eu because theyve sent a message to them saying, i would your horses, i will try and get this deal through parliament in the next few days meaning the extension request may be totally mute and they may not even have to consider it. Having said that, the eu has in their back pocket plans for an emergency summit of eu leaders either a week today on sunday or a week on tuesday because they think the decision to make a decision has to be made by leaders face to face. I could be speaking to you a week today from another eu summit devoted to brexit. You a week today from another eu summit devoted to brexiti you a week today from another eu summit devoted to brexit. I think thatis summit devoted to brexit. I think that is more likely what about the mixed messages we have seen in the last few days . At the moment we hear people like Emmanuel Macron of france, jean claude juncker, the president of the European Commission, leo varadkar, the irish Prime Minister, saying they think there is a good way of applying pressure in westminster to get mps to finally vote for this deal. If it came to the fact they were having to consider the prospect of a genuine extension, i think they would probably say yes. The reason is that if the uk say, can we stay in the eu for a bit longer and the eu says no, thatis for a bit longer and the eu says no, that is effectively the eu kicking the uk out, a member state out of the uk out, a member state out of the eu and causing a no deal brexit. The number one objective on the eu side, a joint objective to getting a deal through, is to prevent a no deal through, is to prevent a no deal and avoid the blame if a no deal brexit occurs. If push came to shove and we were at the emergency summit on sunday or tuesday or whenever, the eu would probably say yes. They would attach conditions and one of those would be if the uk is staying in for more than a month or two, they would have to nominate a commissioner to work in the European Commission among the other 27. Adam fleming, thanks. 0ur Political Correspondent, jessica parker, is here. Borisjohnson has sent Boris Johnson has sent the borisjohnson has sent the letter but did not sign it and he was obliged to send that letter by law, as we were saying. From what you can work out, has he fulfilled what he is expected to do by law . By the benn act . It is a bit subjective at this stage, he sent this letter asking for an extension, as set out by the benn act. He has not signed it. One argument is that he has sent the letter, donald tusk has clearly received a ten basically said the request is under consideration. So in that sense, he has met the letter of the law but by sending this other letter by saying he doesnt think an extension is a good idea, incidentally he did sign that letter, whether that frustrates the principle of the benn act is another question. Possible legal challenges on this, we will have to see how the next 2a to 48 hours on this, we will have to see how the next 24 to 48 hours play out but it is open to interpretation. I spoke toa is open to interpretation. I spoke to a lawyer saying that he has met the law because he sent the letter and the request has been received. And what about political reaction to sending the unsigned letter and the signed letter . Obviously as far as downing street is concerned, they are quite cross theyve had to do this. Borisjohnson said rather infamously that he would rather be deadin infamously that he would rather be dead ina infamously that he would rather be dead in a ditch rather than ask for an extension. This is a climb down for him even though he did not sign the letter. Some mps in westminster will be furious he has not signed the letter. They will see that as an unwelcome gesture. That has been put to the shadow chancellorjohn mcdonnell this morning. He was clearly trying to undermine the first letter, by not signing it. He is behaving like a spoiled brad. Parliament made a decision, he should abide by it and the idea that you send another letter contradicting the first place in the face of what parliament and the courts have decided. Spoilt brat. We had Super Saturday that turned out to be less than that. And manic monday, to multi was tuesday. There is a meaningfulfault, that was the aim, that failed yesterday. Weather Speakerjohn Bercow will allow that to go ahead, we will have to see what he decides. Why wouldnt he . If you remember when theresa may tried to bring back the same boat, he said you cannot do that because it wasnt substantially different. She had to get some guarantees and make it different enough, then the third time it was the Withdrawal Agreement bill. The government will be hoping because yesterdays vote had amendments thrown in there and it was not a binary choice, they will be able to argue that next time, they want it to be yes or no, therefore it is different to what we saw on saturday. It will be up to john bercow and ministers and as a result they are nervous about that. As well we know the government is going to try and introduce the necessary legislation to actually get this deal over the line. Boris johnson saying that in his letter, the second letter he signed to donald tusk he thinks he could get it all done on the table by october the 31st. Jessica parker, our Political Correspondent, thank you. Protesters have held rallies in hong kong, as pro democracy demostrators continue their campaign. The march took place despite police having earlier banned it. This weekend marks the twentieth week since the protests began. Chinese officials and the state news media have denounced the protests as a separatist movement. 0ur correspondent nick beake is there for us. Tell us what is happening . Hello, ben. A peaceful protest once again has given away to violence. You can probably see down there the water cannon. It is an important tool for the police, look at that. We will keep on walking so we can show you. They have dyed the water blue to identify protesters. Just to give you the background to this, in the first ten minutes also, firebombs have been thrown at the police station, that is why we have seen this response. In the distance, you can see hundreds of protesters, dressed in black. These are the elite police, who have been behind the scenes for some time. It looks like theyve got a non Lethal Weapon there. It could be a beanbag oi weapon there. It could be a beanbag ora weapon there. It could be a beanbag or a rubber bullet firing weapon and you came to us that a good time, in the last 20 minutes the atmosphere has changed. It is clear another sunday in hong kong will end with violence. It has already ended with violence. It has already ended with violence. It has already ended with violence. I think this isjust violence. It has already ended with violence. I think this is just a snapshot. There are different scenes in different parts of the city as well. Put this into context, another sunday, as you say stop this has been going on for weeks. What do the protesters hope they can achieve . What do they want to achieve with these demonstrations we are seeing again today . You are right, this is the 20th consecutive weekend of protests. If you speak to the protesters like we did this morning when it was peaceful, probably their concern is that they think china is trampling on their freedoms. Concern is that they think china is trampling on theirfreedoms. They say they should enjoy a degree of freedom of expression and freedom of the media here, and that is not happening. That began all those weeks ago, five months ago. A very specific anger about a piece of legislation that has morphed into this. This is a vivid illustration of what the Government Faces here, to try and win back the people. This is one of the busiest shopping centres, shopping districts in hong kong. Rather than families having a nice sunday outing, you have police arriving and protesters making their way far away so that they will regroup, it is clear. But this is the response from police. And the reason people keep coming onto the streets is they believe the police are being brutal, in their words. They say that peaceful protests have been dealt with. On the other side, it is clear that there are ha rd core side, it is clear that there are hardcore protesters who are upping the ante, throwing petrol bombs at police. That is clear. This is an illustration of what is happening. In previous weeks, this goes on and on until darkness falls. Nick, stay safe and im sure we will be speaking to you again in the coming hours. Nicky, our correspondence in hong kong with the latest from there. Nick beake. Violence has erupted on the streets of barcelona for the sixth consecutive night, after the citys mayor pleaded for calm. Protesters in the city have clashed with police every night since monday angry with the decision to jail Pro Independence leaders for their role in catalonias failed attempt to secede from spain two years ago. 0ur correspodnent guy hedgecoe is in barcelona. Bring us up to date with what is happening there today . Well, there we re happening there today . Well, there were more scenes of unrest last night. Late into the night, there we re night. Late into the night, there were some arrests. As you mention, this is the sixth day of demonstrations and unrest that we have seen but i should point out that last night, the protests were slightly calmer than some of the scenes weve seen through the week. There were police Peaceful Protesters who tried to separate from the police and that calmed things a bit. 0nce from the police and that calmed things a bit. Once again, the city and authorities are cleaning up the streets, they have their employees out cleaning the streets and cleaning burnt rubble and other things protesters, some protesters, have been burning last night on the streets. We are expecting to see a unionist demonstration in barcelona but we think the Pro Independence demonstrations are likely to continue as well some time. For the moment, thank you very much indeed. Three people have been killed in a fire in the capital of chile, as violent protests continued for a second night. A curfew has been imposed in parts of santiago after demonstrations began in response to a planned rise in metro fares. Protests have since spread to other cities despite president ial promises to suspend the move. The military was brought onto the streets of the capital to help Police Control the protests. The mother of a Junior Doctor who went missing off the devon coast two years ago, says her daughter has been let down by the nhs. Dr Lauren Phillips mother, andrea graham, who is herself a former nhs manager, has called on the Health Secretary to do more to support those on the front line of our hospitals. Marie ashby reports. Andrea graham comes to woolacombe bay in devon to feel close to her daughter. This is where her car was found abandoned. Dr Lauren Phillips, who was 26, had told her mother she was worried about starting a newjob in a e in bristol. Doctors have a fear that if they admitted they had struggled with a particular situation at work, or if they admitted that they were struggling from Mental Health problems, that that might be taken into account in future career, or it might demonstrate that actually, theyre not Strong Enough to be a doctor. Lauren did seek help, and was advised to sign up with a gp. The Nhs Practitioner Health service has supported thousands of doctors in london over the last 11 years. This month, it has been extended across england to cope with demand. Its medical director is a government advisor. Every year, if we compare it with the last year, we have had 100 more patients, so we are doing something to these wonderful young people, and i think what we are doing to them is not showing them kindness and compassion, and we are treating them as if they dont matter. 0ne doctor every three weeks takes their own life in england. Currently, the nhs is struggling with record demand and a shortage of 10,000 medics. Do you accept that understaffing has put more pressure onJunior Doctors . Yes, of course i do, and i see it in hospitals. And we are hiring more doctors, partly because of the pressures on them. And i want to make sure that everybody who goes into work as a doctor gets the support they need but also, people you know, when they sign up to become a doctor in the first place, they are signing up to work and give their working life to the care of others, and we need to care for them. Dr Lauren Phillips body has never been found. I dont have anywhere to go to grieve for lauren. I cant sit beside a grave. But this has to be a more beautiful place to be and to think about lauren. Marie ashby reporting and you can see more on that story on inside out, south west, at 07. 30 on monday and later, on the bbc iplayer. The us secretary of defence says all remaining american troops in Northern Syria are expected to be relocated to iraq. Turkey has been carrying out an offensive against Kurdish Forces in Northern Syria following president trumps decision to withdraw us forces from the border region. A temporary ceasefire has been declared but both turkey and the kurds have accused each other of breaches. Its reported that up to 300,000 people have fled their homes since the offensive started. 0ur correspondent Barbara Plett usher is in turkey, a couple of hours from the border in the south of the country. Tell us, what is the latest state of the ceasefire . We are in day three of the ceasefire, which is a temporary halt to the turkish offensive into these areas, just across the border in syria. They started the offensive to give the kurdish fighters a chance to withdraw 30 kilometres back. The kurdish fighters have not done that yet, they say the turks are besieging the main town where the conflict has been, and they won to ensure that the wounded and fighters are evacuated from their before they pull out from this zone. The turks say they are not besieging the towns but they finally managed to get a convoy in last night to pull out the wounded and hope to get another in today. If that is completed, we may see this pull back take place and in the meantime there have been sporadic clashes reported. In dimension to the us troops withdrawn from syria, many people say that gave the green light to turkey in the first place to start this offensive. What more do we know about them being relocated . That is something the defence secretary, i think, is coming to the region to sort out. He is on his way and said en route that they would be relocated to western iraq. From there, they would be used to help protect iraq but also continue operations against Islamic State. That is one of the biggest concerns about the latest conflict, the United States was allied with Kurdish Forces in North Eastern syria to keep Islamic State from making a resurgence and so now the alliance has been disrupted, it isnt clear what will happen to that. He did not rule out the possibility of these troops carrying out counterterror operations from iraq, but out counterterror operations from iraq, but i think he will be talking about those kinds of details and as he mentioned, the troops are still being withdrawn, they have not consolidated to the west of the border and some places in the east will be continuing to pull out. Mostly to iraq that us officials have said may be not all of them. Barbara plett usher, thank you. President trump has said he is abandoning his plan to host the 2020 g7 summit at his florida golf resort. It comes after democrats and others said the decision was evidence of the president misusing his office for personal gain. From washington Chris Buckler reports. White house officials said that they knew there would be criticism when they announced the president was planning to host World Leaders at the Trump National duran near miami. But they insisted it was the best location for next summers g7 summit and the event would be at cost price. But many pointed out the resort would also benefit from a huge amount of publicity. We spoke about the possibility of whether or not the president could do it at no cost, but there were difficulties doing that way but also charging it at market rates so they are doing it at market rates so they are doing it at cost. It has been dramatically cheaper for us to do it there compared to the final sites we had. Ina compared to the final sites we had. In a series of posts on twitter, donald trump said he even offered to provide the facility for free, but because of what he described as the irrational hostility of the media and his political opponents, they would now be looking for another site. Japan famously beat the springboks in a pool match at the last world cup. 0ur sports correspondent, andy swiss, is at the match in tokyo. Japan have really been the story of the tournament so far. This is the first time they have ever reached the quarterfinals. Their wins over ireland and scotland have captured the imagination injapan. More than half the country watched the scotland game on television. That is more than 60 million people, which is an amazing feat when you bear in mind rugby is not traditionally one of the biggest sports here in japan. That said, south africa will be a big step up for them. They have looked ominous in the group stages. They have scored more points and more tries than any other team.
