Hello and welcome to world news today. The syrian army has begun moving troops to the north of the country to, as syrian state media puts it, confront turkish aggression. The Turkish Military is currently carrying out an operation to create what it calls a safe zone in syrian territory along their common border. Thats led to fighting against the kurdish led Opposition Forces currently in control of the area. This map gives you an idea of where the advances have been taking place. Turkey now claims to have driven the kurds out of two key towns ras al ain and tal abyad. This video, showing Turkish Forces in tal abyad, appears to support that claim. Most civilians have fled the area the un says more than 130,000 people have been displaced by the Turkish Military operation. And theres been another, potentially serious consequence. On sunday, the kurds said that nearly 800 family members of fighters from the Islamic State group have escaped from a detention camp, in the confusion following a turkish air strike. 0ur correspondent Aleem Maqbool is in the region, and sent this report. The anguish that only comes from loss. This brother and sister mourned their father who was killed in the shelling by turkey of their residential neighbourhood. The kurds here have already suffered so much, and every day of turkeys offensive brings new chaos. These were just a handful of the hundreds of women and children who as turkish attacks got closer today escaped a kurdish camp that held them. They were mainly relatives of Islamic State group fighters. The bbc team had access to the camp just last week, where they found amira who was brought to syria five years ago by her british parents. Her two sisters, brother and both her parents were killed in the final onslaught against is. My mum died, my littlest brother, my little brother and my sister. Her fate and also that of scores of female is members is now unknown. Its not the first massive Security Breach brought on by the turkish aggression. Five captured is fighters escaped from a prison here too after it was shelled. We found it abandoned, the remaining prisoners moved into other already overwhelmed facilities. The authorities here say they are already struggling with the resources to hold many thousands of what are among the most dangerous prisoners in the world from a so called Islamic State group. What they warn is that with any further destabilisation caused by this assault from turkey, many more could escape, potentially regroup, undoing the massive effort it took to capture them and take their territory back. Already, is says it was responsible for this car bomb that killed three people. The fear is far worse is to come. And the atrocities against the kurds here are now coming from so many angles. All the while, turkeys offensive goes on. This evening, a convoy travelling close to the border was attacked. And the number of kurdish casualties continues to mount. Aleem maqbool, bbc news, in North Eastern syria. With me is our middle east regional editor sebastian usher. Events a re events are moving very rapidly on this fifth day of the Turkish Operation and what is interesting is the way the dynamic in the region is changing as well . Yes, what we were hearing there is how the turks are continuing, you know, strong progress taking more towns and more villages. In response to this, essentially we have seen the us up the timetable of its withdrawal of troops. The us defence secretary said their situation was no longer, they could no longer guarantee the safety of the troops and that has to be the First Priority for the americans. He is saying up to 1000 will be pulled out as soon as they possibly can. As we know, already the kurds felt abandoned by the americans and that emboldened the turks to move in. Talks have been going on, we know, for some time between the kurds. They said this is one of the cards we are playing. If we have to, we will go to damascus. They have done a deal with president assad. What the kurds say is the syrian troops are going to spread across the border and they are going to secure the border against the turkish offensive. They are presumably trading towns the kurds still hold, these are towns we have seen throughout the conflict. They have been major battle grounds previously with ices. It is an upheaval again, this region. The cards, the pieces have been scattered once more and they will have to be put back on the table and maybe in a different way, just when certain aspects of the syrian conflict seem to be coming to an end, there is a lot to play for again. This development is about the syrian army moving towards the north of the country to this region where turkey is carrying out the military operation, it might seem to some we have a squaring up to turkey and i wonder what turkis next move is likely to be . Turkey and president erdogan said it doesnt matter, we are going head to head whatever happens. They have been leading a path toward some kind of resolution to the conflict. This could potentially pit them against each other because russia is involved with damascus, if the troops are moving to the border potentially, squaring off against the turks. You would imagine there is a possibility ofa would imagine there is a possibility of a new confrontation but behind the scenes you can imagine more deals are being done and this isnt something that has come out of the blue. This was likely to happen, the blue. This was likely to happen, the kurds run out of options, this is what they were going to do. So the russians and the turks, one assumes have been discussing this and finding ways perhaps to try and make sure direct confrontations are avoided and the Syrian Government are not fighting directly against Turkish Forces. We will have to wait and see. Many thanks. And you can find much more on our website. Including this article, which explains the history of mistrust and violence between turkey and the kurds. Exit polls in the polish parliamentary elections suggest the nationalist conservative law and Justice Party have won 43. 6 of the vote and 239 seats with the civic Coaltion Party at 27. 4 and 130 seats. If the exit poll is confirmed by the official results, expected on monday, then the right wing law and justice has won a slightly improved mandate compared to elections four years ago. Kasia madera has the latest from warsaw. Kasia. No real surprise as to who the winner is. Law and justice are polling very strongly in the run up to these elections. Everybody was watching whether they would once again geta watching whether they would once again get a majority and as you say, these exit polls, the final results will change slightly when the Electoral Commission publishes them in the next day or two but if the exit polls suggest, it is law and justice is predicted to have 239 seats, which means they are clear of that majority. They would have needed 231 to form a majority government. It is the second time they have won a majority. It is only they have won a majority. It is only the second time in polish history that one party has won a majority. We have got all the numbers and the figures and to discuss them with me, i have someone from the left and liberal independent broadcaster. Thank you forjoining us tonight. We we re thank you forjoining us tonight. We were expecting law and justice to win, but they have uncomfortably, what do you make of that . win, but they have uncomfortably, what do you make of that . I think law and justice will have the majority again and we are talking still about exit polls. Maybe later poles can be a little bit different, like it was after the election to the european parliament. But i am sure law and justice will still have a majority. What i want to comment oii a majority. What i want to comment on is the attendance, which was really high. It is 61 . Normally in poland it is about 50 . But a few days before the election you could fill in the air, i really strong mobilisation. This is really high attendance. It is a high attendance attendance. It is a high attendance at this whole election is being compared as significant as the first semi free elections after the fall of communism. That attendance, the turnout was also very high . Absolutely, but lets talk about the problems that law and justice can face now. Apart from dealing with social promises they made during theircampaign, they social promises they made during their campaign, they might forget about one very serious problem which they might face if brexit happens. Because if that happens, we are going to lose 45,000 jobs in poland and nobody was talking about it. I had a chance to ask the former Prime Minister about brexit and she said that actually they would like to see britain in europe, but lets see how it will change their approach towards britain when brexit actually happens and they will need to deal with the losses of the jobs in poland. They have also got to deal with the amount of money they have promised. They have increased child welfare, they have increased pensions, they have increased, they are promising to increase minimum wage, that is a lot of money, where is it coming from . That is the question and it is a question future government will ask as well. We still dont the answer. An interesting thing in this election is the opposition. For the first time, since the last election, we have left in parliament, left is coming back to the polish parliament after four years of presence and i think the left still has a chance, may be disappointed by the result, but it still has a chance to dictate the written opposition. Also, the right has passed the 5 threshold in order to get some parliamentary seats . That is correct. Lets see if law and justice is going to deal with them to get even bigger majority. But this is, i think, a very interesting moment. Because obviously there are differences in approach to many things, but i guess they might be tempted to deal with them to have an even bigger majority in the lower house in poland. Thank you so much forjoining us and yes, like i say this has been an election that has been motivating so many people, incredibly and historically high turnout. We will be getting reaction from the spokesperson for the leader of the winning law and Justice Party in the next hour. 0k, kasia, thank you very much. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news. An exit poll in tunisia indicates that the independent candidate kais saied has won a resounding victory in the president ial run off election. The poll showed mr saied with more than 70 of the vote against his rival the media magnate nabil karoui. Britains Prime Minister borisjohnson says there is still a significant amount of work to do to reach a brexit deal before the uk is due to leave the eu at the end of this month. Talks between both sides are ongoing. Talks are taking place between ecuadors president and leaders of the violent anti austerity demonstrations. The meeting comes after nearly two weeks of protests, which broke out after fuel subsidies were removed. A curfew has been imposed in the capital quito. Injapan, more than 30 people have died from super typhoon hagibis, with another 21 people missing. The huge storm has ripped across most of central and northern japan last night dumping record quantities of rain. 0ur correspondent Rupert Wingfield hayes has travelled north of tokyo, where rescue efforts are still underway. This is the town of chikuma in the japanese alps. Much of it now enveloped by brown, dirty floodwater. On saturday night, the levies burst, unable to withstand the onslaught from typhoon hagibis. All day, the military has been racing to pluck those stranded from roofs and balconies. It is a story that has been repeated over and over. This afternoon, we made it to kawagoe, an hour north of tokyo. Here, too, the rivers have burst their banks. What is remarkable about this typhoon is its scale. There are rescues going on in at least different places right across the island of japan. People different places right across the island ofjapan. People we different places right across the island of japan. People we talk to are shocked and numb. Translation i have lived here 32 yea rs. Translation i have lived here 32 years. Kurdish forces announce a deal with the Syrian Government to allow the army to take control of kurdish territory to halt an invasion by turkey. Exit polls suggest polands governing law and Justice Party has decisively won parliamentary elections, retaining its overall majority. More now on the Turkish Military operation against the kurds in Northern Syria. It began after the us started withdrawing its troops from their positions alongside the kurds. The us has now announced plans to pull all of its remaining forces away from areas which could be affected by the fighting. Chris buckler is in washington. The president s earlier decision to withdraw troops was met with some fairly strong criticism, even from his own party. What has been the reaction to this latest announcement . That was dozens of trips as opposed to hundreds. Having made this decision to withdraw their forces from Northern Syria, the us seems to be wasting no time. They wa nt to seems to be wasting no time. They want to do this in days, rather than weeks. 0ne want to do this in days, rather than weeks. One of the big concerns in washington, amongst some of president trumps allies, is the impact this could have on the kurds. The Kurdish Forces were for so long the us allies in fighting Islamic State and now it seems they have been abandoned. At the pentagon says it is not prepared to keep its troops there because it is concerned it could get caught between the Kurdish Forces and the Turkish Forces co m e Kurdish Forces and the Turkish Forces come in. As a result, it says it wants to get out of there. At the same time, what you are also seeing inside syria is a great deal of instability, which is again concerning america. President trump said he doesnt want any part of this. When we talk about criticism it is worth listening to some of those who used to advise the president himself. James mattis, the former defence secretary has been seeking to nbcs meet the press programme. He had no doubt as to what could be left behind due to the Islamic State grip. Isis is not defeated. We have got to keep the pressure on isis so they dont recover. We may want a war over, we may even declare it over. You can pull your troops out as president 0bama learnt the hard way, out of iraq. But the enemy gets a vote, we say in the military, and in this case if we dont keep the pressure on then isis will resurge. Its absolutely given that they will come back. Quite a stark warning, chris. But i suppose the president would argue that he was elected partly on a mandate of pulling the us out of these foreign theatres of war . Yes, these foreign theatres of war . Yes, the american first president who essentially wants to say he doesnt wa nt essentially wants to say he doesnt want troops inside the middle east. He doesnt think he should be involved in these conflicts. But it is worth pointing out those who say the danger of is emerging as a force again is something that could impact on other countries, including the us going forward. There are many in the state department and the pentagon who are worried about what they are seeing in syria. Clearly, instability could spread out to other regions within the middle east and as faras other regions within the middle east and as far as they are concerned, they know this could become a very deadly battle given turkey seems to be moving further deep into the country than they had first expected. Chris buckler, many thanks indeed. The time barry has been broken today. The womens marathon world record has been obliterated. Can yous Brigid Kosgei ran 2 14. 4. There have been whispers all week that Brigid Kosgei was in the mood to finally break the 16 year long record Paula Radcliffe has held since the 2003 london marathon. She set off at an incredible pace and maintained it largely. It was on from early on and there was a concern she went off too fast. But she maintained it and managed to get that extraordinary time of 2 14. 4 and knocking 81 seconds off Paula Radcliffes world record. Would you believe only 22 of the men did better than that. To put the achievement into some kind of perspective, consider that her nearest rival came in almost seven minutes slower than Brigid Kosgei. I have heard people saying in the last couple of hours, this achievement by Brigid Kosgei is perhaps more impressive than the one yesterday. Funnily enough, she gave a press c0 nfe re nce yesterday. Funnily enough, she gave a press conference and she said she believed it was possible for women to get one day two hours and ten minutes and a 25 she doesnt believe why she shouldnt be the woman to do that.
