Its 8am in singapore, 1am in london and 3am in syria where turkey has launched a ground offensive in the north of the country, just hours after its warplanes and artillery began hitting territory held by kurdish led forces. The move follows President Trumps controversial decision to withdraw us troops from the area which is controlled by the kurdish Led Syrian Democratic forces. They played a leading role in the fight against Islamic State, but are regarded as terrorists by turkey. Turkey says it wants to set up a 30km safe zone along the border, to resettle up to two million Syrian Refugees living in turkey. One Monitoring Group says that ten civilians have already been killed. The bbcs orla guerin is on the turkish syria border with this report. In syria, a new round of warfare. The town of ras al ain under heavy bombardment, one of several just inside the border in the kurdish controlled north east. Its the start of a turkish offensive that is alarming europe, has been condemned by america and is bringing fresh instability to the middle east. And, once again, syrian civilians forced to flee. A local journalist saw them go. Thousands of people migrating to the south side. The turkish army are shelling by mortars everywhere. From across the border in turkey, we could see smoke rising in the town of tal abyad. The bbc understands turkish troops are now on the ground there. Well, here at the border, we have been seeing and hearing the opening salvos in turkeys assault on North Eastern syria. In the last half an hour or so, weve heard mortar rounds and artillery fire and there has been incoming mortar fire from syria. President erdogan is calling this operation peace spring but, for civilians across the border on the syrian side, this is going to feel like one more round of battle in an agonisingly long war. Turkey says the aim of this offensive is to create a safe zone along its border and allow two million Syrian Refugees to go home. Today, it was creating new ones. Ankara also wants to drive out Syrian Kurdish forces it views as terrorists. That area is needed for our safety and security for the Syrian Refugees to go back to, so they can go back to their normal lives and there is no vacuum to be filled by any terrorist network, and also to make sure that syria is not divided territorially. But turkeys assault on the kurds could be costly. Theyve been crucial in the fight against Islamic State and are holding 10,000 is prisoners. Now theyll have to focus on resisting turkey. Tonight at the border, rockets in the night sky. The invasion is well under way, is worried nations look on. 0rla guerin, bbc news, near the turkey syria border. A short while ago President Trump explained why he withdrew us forces from the region ahead of this offensive. I campaigned on ending the endless wars. Were all over the world, we are fighting in places where nobody really knows what theyre doing there and i feel we are doing the right thing and i think the country feels that too. Earlier, President Trump released a statement saying the United States does not endorse the attack and has made it clear to turkey that this operation is a bad idea. But it was mr trumps decision to withdraw us troops from northeast syria that paved the way for this turkish offensive. Theres been plenty of criticism of that decision, from both sides of the political divide. Heres our north america editorjon sopel. If he thinks it is such a bad idea why on sunday night did he agree in a phone call with president erdogan and then put out a statement later saying that american troop would not be in the way. There are only 50 soldiers, but all the time those troops were there on the ground there was not a chance the president erdogan would have launched this offensive with the risk that american blood might be spilt. So a very few soldiers were keeping the peace and that is what has enraged so many republicans as well as democrats in washington. I have scoured social media to find supportive comments for what donald trump has done and it is very difficult to find any. The talk is of betrayal, the talk is of what about our comrades in arms who fought with us . What happens to the prisoners . And also questions about the temperament of the president as well. What about the timing of this . What about consultation . Why has donald trump done this after a single phone call and very little negotiation with his military chiefs . In response to the hostility, donald trump has said that if president erdogan goes too far then america will act and flatten the turkish economy. One other quote from the president , just a short time ago in the white house here, he said of the kurds, apparentlyjustifying why they did not deserve total protection, that they did not help us in the second world war. They did not help us with normandy. At least two people have been killed in a shooting outside a synagogue in the german city of halle. Our top stories we are talking about the air and ground offensive that has been launched by turkey into north east syria. Turkey says it wants to create a safe zone between the border on the border between turkey and syria. A gunman has killed two people in eastern germany after attempting to enter a synagogue where worshippers were marking the Jewish Synagogue where worshippers were marking thejewish holiday of yom kippur war. And modern mobile life would not exist without them. The nobel prize in chemistry goes to three pioneers who developed lithium ion batteries. Lets keep the focus on our main story, the ground and fair offensive launched by turkey into north east syria. Turkey says it wants to create a safe zone on the border and are clearing kurdish militants which turkey considers to be terrorist. Lets speak to the bbc turkish service. It is important to say that the group that the turkish government feels are terrorists are the pkk, the work is party. Workers party. But they are not the only group within this area, are they . Pkk is a Kurdish Militia in turkey and have been fighting with the turkish army for more than three decades and turkey considers this group as a terrorist organisation and the us and the europeans also call this a terrorist organisation. 0ne call this a terrorist organisation. One of the main groups, ypg, turkey claims that it is connected to pkk and it poses a threat to Turkish Security on its southern border and thatisit security on its southern border and that is it main claim for this operation. Given the pkk have made a tax within turkey. What is the mood in turkey about what is happening right now in this region . Most of the turkish people support government and support the fight against pkk because it is a terrorist organisation but about this operation we can say that Public Opinion is divided. Some people argue that we do not have an imminent threat from syrian kurds living in the southern, next to the southern border of turkey and they say this operation will cause more serious to flee to turkey and increase the number of Syrian Refugees and they say would not want any war, any more clashes with the curse. But it is hard to hear the voices. The media in turkey is mostly control and under the influence of turkish government, lets say, and just recently, arrest wa rra nts lets say, and just recently, arrest warrants were issued for almost 80 people because of their tweet and things they wrote on social media, saying these people are doing propaganda for terrorism and they are promoting hate so they can arrest people in turkey. That development within the last few moments. Thank you. Earlier i spoke to bradley bowman, the senior director of the center on military and political power at the foundation for defense of democracies. Hes a former National Security advisor and i asked him how it was possible that a tweet from a president could result in the withdrawal of American Forces from a particularly delicate region. We certainly live in a new reader where a president ial suite can have such far reaching and significant consequences but that is how President Trump chooses to operate. Of course, there was the White House Press statement on sunday basically essentially giving the green light toa essentially giving the green light to a turkish incursion into syria and then the president followed that with a series of tweet that were frankly incoherent and that any reasonable observer could see as a green light for the invasion. People who say this is patriotic are morally wrong and shortsighted. Can we say that withdrawal has enabled turkey to bring their forces and, given the president is not endorsing any turkish attack and would destroy the turkish economy if this were to go ahead . I think it is that clear cut. I think there is almost no way that Recep Tayyip Erdogan would have gone forward with this incursion if the small number of us forces that state in the region President Trump has spoken with consistency and strength that he and others opposed it. Now i worry, lets remember the Syrian Democratic forces sustained 11,000 casualties in helping the us and the europeans to defeat the isis caliphate, they have been detaining thousands of isis detainees. Based on my service in the army recall that breaking faith, breaking faith with partners who fought and died fighting the shed enemy. It will make people more relu cta nt to shed enemy. It will make people more reluctant to work with us in the future which is the exact opposite of what President Trump wanted and result in more trips going abroad. They were withdrawn from this particular area not the country itself and he is saying in that senseit itself and he is saying in that sense it feels like there was a possibility that is there a possibility that is there a possibility they could re establish themselves in this region or are we are step too far . It is a good question and an important distinction. Withdrawing from the country or falling back to avoid the line of fire. Certainly, it is not too late to put them back but obviously were not going to be eager to do that without some of understanding with ankara. The president has been very clear, including but your programme cited moments ago, he wants to and less was but was a knot and because we say they and an you would think americans do not need to be reminded that the problems in the middle east can come and attack us at home. Something we should not need to be reminded after 9 11 and get with such a small us forces working with tens of thousands of partners, we we re tens of thousands of partners, we were doing great strategic good and this is exactly the kind of us deployment we should do more of not less and this is unfortunately what President Trump is trying to. Is trying to end. Australian farmers are bracing themselves for another long, hot summer as rivers run dry and bushfires rage across the state of New South Wales. Up to 30 houses were destroyed or seriously damaged by fire this week. The situation is at crisis point, with 98 per cent of New South Wales either in drought or short on water. But as we speak, Young Australian farmers are gathering at a summit to share their experiences and find some solutions. I guess it is different in the sense that it just keeps going. We have been pretty much in Drought Conditions since about 2017 and then really bad Drought Conditions since 2018 and it just keeps going so it is very hard to maintain and kind of plan and prepare for such and prepare for such a long period of Drought Conditions. It keeps on going and you have said, sally, that when you look out your window, it can really be quite depressing. What sort of emotional toll is this drought taking on you and your fellow Young Farmers . It isa Young Farmers . It is a really huge emotional toll. Simply because, when you look out at the landscape, it is not how it should be. It is not green. We should be getting ready to harvest our green crops and most people are not going to get a harvest so the landscape looks entirely different because people have not been putting no crops at all or the crops that have been put in have not reached the stage where they are ha rvesta ble. You start to wonder if the future of agriculture is sustainable, simply for the fact that the production is what you used to be seeing and it goes for the same when we are destocking our sheep and cattle, you are used to having those out there in the paddocks. I guess it is an emotional toll and quite depressing to see the land like it is but also a huge worry on us about our future in the industry. It is really a burden for Young Farmers like yourself. You are gathering with your fellow Young Farmers in this summit. What kind of solutions are you trying to come up are you trying to come up with to be able to ove rco m e up with to be able to overcome this issue . I think really the main thing is we want a stable drought policy. Drought will come in a cycle, as it does in australia, we know we will face drought in the future but what we dont want is that when a drought comes eve ryo ne is that when a drought comes everyone goes into crisis mode and the government dishes out funding but there is no plan or policy in place. Many have applauded coleen rooney, others have questioned whether making public accusations on twitter was the fairest way to act towards someone who was previously a close friend. Lizo mzimba, bbc news. From rico hizon and me, goodbye. Hello there. Wednesday has been a very showery day across parts of scotland and Northern Ireland, particularly western scotland, rainfall totals really starting to mount up, weve seen some flush flooding in places, a lot of surface spray on the roads. As we head on into thursday, it looks like its going to stay pretty unsettled, turn windier through the day, with another band of rain moving in. Could see the new area of low pressure. This is the low pressure we have had for the last few days, eventually clearing off to the north east. This new area of low pressure will send its weather fronts out across for the north west of the country, and it will bring another round of fairly strong winds. Thursday though starts off fine and dry for many. Lovely spell of sunshine up and down the country. A few showers across western scotland continuing. And then the band of rain starts to push in, to Northern Ireland initially, and then into much of scotland and perhaps the far north of england. And it is going to turn very wet and we could see further issues with surface water flooding across western scotland. Whereas further south, although there will be a lot of cloud across england and wales, there could be quite a bit of dry weather too. The top temperature of 17 degrees. But through thursday night, it stays quite blustery. Further heavy showers, longer spells of rain across the north west of the country. And then we will start to see some more persistent rain pushing to parts of england and wales by the end of the night. You notice temperatures 12 14 in the south. Turning much milder. Temperatures nine or 10 the overnight low for scotland and Northern Ireland. The reason for the wet weather as we head on into friday and, indeed, into the weekend, is this weather front which will be pretty much part across england and wales, we think, and it is going to bring a lot of rainfall throughout friday. Tending to pile up into the hills of wales, perhaps the north midlands, and northern england, particularly across the peak district. Particularly across the peak district. 50 70 millimetres of rain by the time the day is out, so that could cause some issues, atrocious conditions on the road and some surface water flooding. Across the far south east, we could se a little bit of a brightness and dry weather, then it will be mild to the south of that weather front, friday afternoon. 18 degrees will be the high. Around 15 or 16 on the weather front. But to the north of it, for scotland and Northern Ireland, where we will see sunshine and showers, cooler air mass, 13 or 1a degrees. And for the rest of friday, looks like the showers across Northern Areas begin to ease down. Perhaps the rain for england and wales might ease down for a bit, before a new renewed bit of rain starts to push into the south west so that means, into the weekend, i think england and wales look like seeing most of the cloud and outbreaks of rain which again could cause some issues, with some surface water flooding. But a different story furrther north, for scotland and Northern Ireland, youll be in the slightly cooler air mass and therell be a mixture of sunshine and showers, some of which may be heavy and thundery. Im kasia madera with bbc world news. Our top story. Theres been International Criticism of turkeys assault against kurdish led forces in Northern Syria. France, germany and britain have requested a meeting of the un security council. President trump described the attack as a bad idea.
