In a move that could save 2,500 jobs and at half past 11 well be taking an in depth look at the papers with our reviewers, economics commentator grace blakeley, and the political commentator giles kenningham. Stay with us for that. Good evening. The long planned Turkish Military operation in north east syria has been launched. Kurdish forces, which control the area, report heavy airstrikes and the start of a ground offensive, amid widespread panic. The turkish decision was prompted by President Trumps announcement that us troops would withdraw from the region, where thousands of captured fighters from the Islamic State group are being held by Kurdish Forces. President erdogan of turkey says his aim is to create a so called safe zone cleared of kurdish fighters. The kurds were key allies of the us in defeating Islamic State and they say theyve been betrayed by President Trump. Tonight, Boris Johnson spoke to mr trump, expressing concern about the risk of a humanitarian disaster in the region. Orla guerin is on the turkish syrian border. The ground offensive is now under way. Turkey has moved swiftly today. A unilateral action by a nato nation that has been widely condemned stop britain has expressed concern saying that the turkish assault risks undermining the progress that has been made against Islamic State group and could destabilise the entire region. Already tonight we are getting reports from one Monitoring Group that at least ten syrian civilians have been killed. In syria, a new round of warfare. The town of ras al ain under heavy bombardment, one of several just inside the border in the kurdish controlled north east. Its the start of a turkish offensive that is alarming europe, has been condemned by america and is bringing fresh instability to the middle east. And, once again, syrian civilians forced to flee. A local journalist saw them go. Thousands of people migrating to the south side. The turkish army are shelling by mortars everywhere. From across the border in turkey, we could see smoke rising in the town of tal abyad. The bbc understands turkish troops are now on the ground there. Well, here at the border, we have been seeing and hearing the opening salvos in turkeys assault on North Eastern syria. In the last half an hour or so, weve heard mortar rounds and artillery fire and there has been incoming mortar fire from syria. President erdogan is calling this operation peace spring but, for civilians across the border on the syrian side, this is going to feel like one more round of battle in an agonisingly long war. Turkey says the aim of this offensive is to create a safe zone along its border and allow two million Syrian Refugees to go home. Today, it was creating new ones. Ankara also wants to drive out Syrian Kurdish forces it views as terrorists. That area is needed for our safety and security for the Syrian Refugees to go back to, so they can go back to their normal lives and there is no vacuum to be filled by any terrorist network, and also to make sure that syria is not divided territorially. But turkeys assault on the kurds could be costly. Theyve been crucial in the fight against Islamic State and are holding 10,000 isil prisoners. Now theyll have to focus on resisting turkey. Tonight at the border, rockets in the night sky. The invasion is well under way, is worried nations look on. 0rla guerin, bbc news, near the turkey syria border. 0ur Diplomatic Correspondent paul adams explained the thinking behind the turkish action. 0ne one has to be sympathetic to the turkish ligament was Syrian Refugees. As many as 4 million. An turkey has paid a heavy price in looking after all those people and for a while encouraging some of them to head to europe. So there is a keen desire to have them return to syria. But this is not the place they came from. They came from other parts of syria. And dominic raab highlights this issue. He says they will not support return until conditions are in place for volu nta ry conditions are in place for voluntary and conditions are in place for volu nta ry a nd safe conditions are in place for voluntary and safe return home and there is nothing to suggest that either of those conditions are likely to happen in the nearfuture. We have not seen any sign of the repatriation effort. It is early days. This is day one of the operation that could last month. Clearly there will be concerned if that emerges as a key part of what president erdogan is doing. But the belief from many people is that this is an attempt to go after Kurdish Forces that turkey believes are allied to Kurdish Forces back in turkey. That has been the overriding concern of the turkish government in all three of the operations. This is the third in three years, along the northern syrian border. The intention, ultimately being to make sure that there are no kurdish fighters anywhere along the border because they see the Syrian Kurdish fighters of the y pg is entirely the same as the pkk, the turkish Kurdish Militia group described by turkey and the west as a terrorist organisation. That is the overriding objective. Question is how far does president intend to go . Will he create a narrow buffer zone or does he intend to push further in and exert influence across North Eastern syria . At this point we simply do not know. And if it does go further, will that cross is rather vague redline President Trump has been talking about . Its been confirmed that the house of commons will sit in emergency session on saturday the 19th of october to consider the way forward on brexit. The last time the house met on a saturday was during the falklands conflict nearly a0 years ago. The session will take place a few days after the eu summit, widely seen as the last chance to agree a brexit deal before the deadline of october 31st. 0ur Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg reports. Notjust her majesty will smell the new paint. A quick makeover before the week when the Prime Ministers political hopes might really do or die. Because the biggest problem is not where to put the barriers, its where theyll be drawn in the coming days. Will there be a deal with the eu or not . Speaking out for the first time like this since he left his job, the former foreign secretary, jeremy hunt, urged the eu to bend. Well, i think we could be about to see a catastrophic failure in statecraft. Not because of malevolence by the eu i think they are sincere in wanting a deal butjust because they havent really understood whats happening in british politics right now. Is it stubbornness . I dont think it is stubbornness. I think it is a bureaucratic inertia that says this is all so difficult and so complicated. But the biggest mistake that we made in the brexit negotiations is when things get bad, you say, surely they couldnt get even worse than this and they do. And i think thats true from the european point of view they think this is bad, just wait until what happens after boris wins an election. So hes written to his former counterparts in the eu to plead for a change of stance. Its irelands call. If ireland chooses to take a statesman like approach at this stage, there is a deal to be done. Taoiseach, please. Are there signs of any move . The irish leader will meet the Prime Minister tomorrow. He wants a deal but not on borisjohnsons terms. It is the position of the uk government that Northern Ireland must leave the Eu Customs Union and must be part of the uk customs union, no matter what the people of Northern Ireland think. Thats their position at the moment, and thats one that is of great difficulty for us. And if it cant be done, the cabinet still claims we can leave the eu this month. We are going now into an important period, an important phase with the European Council next week, but what i would say is that this government is focused on leaving on october the 31st, with or without a deal. Whatever happens in brussels, the next day, on saturday the 19th of october, the Prime Ministers expected to call mps here to westminster for a historic sitting to thrash out what really happens next deal or no deal. And if there is no agreement, mps have already changed the law to force him to delay. But hell kick and scream to protest to try to avoid this it and try to pin the blame on them. Number ten will encounter resistance from the opposition if they try to avoid delay whether sending two letters to the eu or refusing to negotiate further. The Prime Minister has an opportunity on the 19th to announce hes obeyed the law, signed the letter, sent it off to brussels to ask for the extension, which will give us time to work out a sensible relationship with europe. 0ur politicians, though, have already had more than three years to do that. Perhaps, though, now we are on the verge of decisive days. Laura kuenssberg, bbc news, westminster. The uks biggest car manufacturer nissan will end the night shift at its plant in sunderland according to the trade union unite. Its been reported that no jobs will be lost but that up to 3,000 workers at the plant will face a pay cut. The car maker produces over 400,000 cars a year at its wearside plant. President trump has said Us Government officials will speak to anne sacoolas, the wife of an american diplomat, who is suspected of being involved in a fatal crash in northamptonshire in which a teenager, harry dunn, died. Ms sacoolas flew home to the United States despite telling police she had no intention of doing so. Duncan kennedy reports. Harrys parents, charlotte and tim, both wearing sunglasses, came to the Foreign Office hoping for answers. They say their son harry can only achievejustice in death if the American Woman involved in his car crash comes back to the uk. But after spending half an hour with the foreign secretary, dominic raab, they say the meeting felt like a government publicity stunt. Just disgusted, let down by both governments. Just really frustrated that we could spend half an hour or more with him, and weve come out with nothing. Harry died here when his motorbike collided with a car thought to be travelling on the wrong side of the road. It was driven by anne sacoolas, the wife of an american diplomat. But soon after she flew back to the United States. Todays news here at the Foreign Office is a real blow to the family. Theyd already been told by the American State Department that waiving diplomatic immunity is extremely rare, yet they came here in the hope that because this case was so serious that could have changed. Tonight, in an extraordinary development, this case reached inside the white house, with President Trump saying they want to make contact with mrs sacoolas. Were going to speak to her and see what we can come up with so that there can be some healing. Theres tremendous anger over it, its a terrible incident, there is tremendous anger, and i understand the anger from the other side. This experience has hollowed out the emotions of harrys parents. They plan to travel to washington to try to meet President Trump, to use his pressure, his influence for the sake of harry. Duncan kennedy, bbc news. The headlines on bbc news turkey launches military action across its border, against kurdish fighters, in North Eastern syria. For the first time in nearly a0 years, the house of commons will sit in emergency session on a saturday, to try to resolve the brexit crisis. At least two people have been killed in an anti semitic attack in the german city of halle. Britains largest independent travel agency, hays travel, has bought all of thomas cooks 555 high street shops. The company, based in sunderland, says the deal brokered by the administrators could save thousands ofjobs. Its thought that some shops could re open within days. 0ur Consumer Affairs correspondent, coletta smith, reports. Theres been lots of tears, lots of anger. Itsjust been lonely, hasnt it . For the last two and a half weeks, thomas cook staff in hucknall have been living a nightmare. But today there are whispers of good news. Eventually, Branch Manager gemma gets through to the team at hays. It was on profit, yes. Im actually sat with all of my team now, and they would all be happy to come back to the branch. Brilliant, so is that it, then . Is that kind of like a definite that the Stores Opening and well. . Thank you for your help, bye bye, bye they re opening hucknall, and weve just got to all contact them oh, god, yeah, that is amazing. Hays have grown across the uk from their sunderland base and had 190 stores, but today they trebled that in a huge financial gamble. Were not a big corporate, were a family business. We value and empower our staff like nobody else, and thats probably one of the main differentiators. 0vernight, hays have managed to buy access into really big chunks of the market in the uk. Theyve got presence now in the east midlands, in scotland and in wales, as well as the north west of england. But its a lot more concerning for staff in areas in yorkshire and in the north eeast, where theres now going to be two hays travels on high streets like this, within just a stones throw of each other. But hays arent lumbered with running an airline and hotels all over the world, and there is still a big appetite for Package Holidays those who want a real person to deal with, young families, and those who want a fixed price whatever happens to the pound. And theyre opening hucknall, and we can all have ourjobs back. Hays are hoping to mop up that market, and the staff have plenty of loyal customers who they think will be back through the doors now theirjobs and their lives are back on track. I cant believe it, im crying, yeah colletta smith, hucknall, nottinghamshire. Lancashire police have confirmed two people died, following a fire at a working mens club in morecambe. The blaze broke out at Gordon Working Mens Club at a 2 45 this afternoon. Ten fire engines initially attended the fire. The men were rescued from the Gordon Working Mens Club, just behind me, but unfortunately they died a short time later. Police say they are investigating the incident with the fire service but the details seem to be that the fire started at about 2 1i5pm this afternoon. There were reports of banks, some people say it might have been caused by an exploding gas canister or cylinder but that again remains part of the investigation and, as you can see, there are still people here from the fire service making sure that the scene is kept pristine overnight, although all the roads around springfield street in morecambe have now reopened. This week weve been looking at the devastating impact of knife crime on young people and their families. Figures given to the bbc show that in london alone this year there have been more than 3,000 injuries caused in knife attacks. Quite apart from the impact on the victims and their families, there can be serious effects on entire communities. In the third of my special reports on knife crime, i spoke to some of the People Living in one london borough thats been deeply affected by knife crime. The ripples of knife crime spread fast whole communities are damaged. There were members of staff were trying to massage this boys heart outside our school and they have never, ever recovered from that. The violent breeds dread that your friend, your relative, could be next. Before it always is to feel like it was really far away but at this point it feels like at home now. Back in my day, when we had folk, fisticuffs and then you finish. You are ok and friends again but now people bring out their blades. But there is hope. There are so blades. But there is hope. There are so many young people who are coming up so many young people who are coming up and have so much good to say and do. We wanted to hear how one community in north london is coping. The borrower has one of the highest rates of crime in the capital. These are the voices of teachers, a bus driver, social worker, a retired policewoman, ordinary citizens living in extraordinary times doing the right thing. We have lost three students, one was killed outside our school gate. It impacted the whole school, from every member of staff that taught that student, from all those kids, even if they did not know him really well, it had a very negative effect on our school in terms of how kids felt. We had to bring in lots of counsellors. People forget the wider impact on the community. My boys are still quite young, seven and four, but there is definitely a concern, even in london, the city, everywhere you look there is gang culture, knife crime. You turn your head and someone crime. You turn your head and someone else has been stabbed. Crime. You turn your head and someone else has been stabbedlj crime. You turn your head and someone else has been stabbed. I can think of three people personally who have been stabbed. 0ne think of three people personally who have been stabbed. One of them ended fatally and now i think it has got toa fatally and now i think it has got to a point whenever i hear things like that in the area, i think, is it somebody that i know. The group was keen to keep a sense of perspective. The majority are doing so well. Lets be clear, like children, our black both are not just wrappers and footballers and athletes, they are doctors, lawyers, authors, they are so much more. But in london, more than half of male crime offenders are black. 0ur in london, more than half of male crime offenders are black. Our group feels a key part of the problem is the high rate of School Exclusions among black boys. I had a group of big lads. I remember this particular ta in my classroom, as far as im concerned, i am seeing 15 year old kids. He is seeing something different. But the end of the lesson he is like this. This is a teaching assistant. He is shaking, he is afraid. 0ur teaching assistant. He is shaking, he is afraid. Our kids are fed. Can i say it was make because a big white kid stays in the classroom. This woman in london, it is young black men who are killing young black men who are killing young black man. In other parts of the country it is not. If everyone has that fear of the young black man, if everybodys aspiration of the young black man is low, than what is that young black man going to bed . If no one inspires you when you are at home, you are at school, i tell you what there is someone in that corner that will be doing that and it is as simple as that. There is sadness and seriousness in this room. The Wider Society beyond the community remained too complacent about what is going on. It is not until we all wa ke is going on. It is not until we all wake up to the tragedy and pain that Real Solutions can be found. The terrible toll of knife claim in communities in london. Thousands of children across britain are having several teeth removed in hospitals because of whats being described as a double whammy of high needs and poor access to nhs services. The British Dental Association have told the bbc that families, especially in coastal communities, face epicjourneys to get the care they need. As part of a special series of reports about the challenges and opportunities in coastal britain, Jemma Woodman has been to West Cornwall to find out more. Just a warning, her report contains scenes of teeth being removed. Ok, so weve gotjasmine and its extractions in three quadrants. This is the reality of tooth decay in britain. There are a lot of Little People coming through with lots of different needs. It is quite a hard session to go through. Nine year old jasmine has to have five teeth removed at cornwalls main hospital damaged by sugary drinks and snacks, despite mum tracys best efforts. Even at the no added sugar stuff that we get, that we dont think is too bad. It still has one sugar in it, one cube. So, were only to have juice when . When were having knife and fork meals. So, upper right. More than 38,000 children go through this every year in england alone. Its distressing for everyone involved. Theres nothing worse than watching the childrens eyes roll as they fall asleep and its the parents reaction. People dont realise how difficult its going to be until youre there on the day and its your child. Tooth decay in children is on the rise, with as many as one in five having problems before they even start school. There we go, all done. And its coastal areas that are among the hardest hit. The British Dental Association told us that impoverished seaside communities face a double whammy of both tooth decay and poor access to services. Thats not just a problem for children. 0n the harbour side in newquay, healths at hand for mouths all at sea. Im getting my teeth done today because ive got a shambles in my mouth. Just because of the waiting lists, more than anything. I aint registered with any dentist because i never make an appointment. For an actual checkup, i dont know, 15 year ago, 20 years ago . I dont know. This team offers a free treatment in a county where the average wait, even when you have a dentist, is 16 months. We find it very difficult to recruit in cornwall. Most are dentists that arejust qualified, unless they are from cornwall, they dont necessarily want to come here. Nhs england agrees and says, at the same time, demand is growing. Hello is it done . Its all finished. Forjasmine, the worst is over. But thousands of others face a similar ordeal or a long wait for the care that could prevent it. Jemma woodman, bbc news. Next up, the story that has dominated social media today, coleen rooney, wife of former england captain, wayne rooney, has claimed that someone using Rebekah Vardys account has leaked stories about her to the sun newspaper. Rebekah vardy is of course the wife of england and leicester striker, jamie vardy, and denies the allegation. Lizo mzimba has this report. Theyre married to footballers who have played for england, but both women have become well known figures in their own right. Rebekah vardy has taken part in the reality show im a celebrity get me out of here. Coleen rooney has been a guest presenter on shows like the x factor. She says that after years of stories about her appearing in a tabloid newspaper, she decided to lay a trap on her private instagram feed. She told her more than one million twitter followers, she said that she also ensured that only one account could access those false stories and that that Instagram Account belonged to rebekah vardy. Mrs vardy, who says that many people have had access to her account over the years, denied being responsible, replying. Many have applauded coleen rooney, others have questioned whether making public accusations on twitter was the fairest way to act towards someone who was previously a close friend. Lizo mzimba, bbc news. And you would be right that the tabloids are all over this. And well be taking an in depth look at the papers, with our reviewers, the economics commentator, grace blakeley, and the political commentator, giles kenningham. Thats coming up just after the headlines at 11 30. Now its time for the weather. There are no large scale changes coming up anytime soon and that means we will continue to see a mix of rain and showers we have seen over recent days. This is spreading warmth over the country with rain and south westerly wind bringing milder air. Chilli first thing. Showers for western scotland but then this area of rain will extend over Northern Ireland, Northern England and into scotland where the rain will become heavy and persistent through thursday afternoon. Southwards and this was, not a great deal of rain. It might state largely dry and right for most of the days. Highs of 17 degrees. At night time, the area of low pressure continuing to feed downpours across western scotland. Rainfall mounting up western scotland. Rainfall mounting up so we could see some Flooding Issues and later in the night we will start to see some rain returning to england and wales, a sign
