The row continues to escalate, matches in china under threat. Matches in china under threat, huge market and huge revenues at stake. The global sporting market is delicately balanced. And finally professional sports men and women often go into different careers after they retire from competing but i bet you didnt see this one coming. The former chelsea and arsenal goalkeeper, petr cech, is now an ice hockey player thats right, the 37 year old, whos still a performance advisor at chelsea, has swapped the pitch for the rink. Hes signed for guildford phoenix until the end of their season. Cech said itll be wonderful to play the sport he grew up watching as a kid. And thats all from sportsday. Coming up in a moment, the papers. Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are the economics commentator, grace blakeley and the political commentator, giles kenningham. Its great to see you both. Pleasure david frost is the uks brexit negotiator, taking overfrom ollie robbins, who was mrs mays point man. And so far we dont have a deal. I have an idea, how about getting Colleen Rooney to head to brussels. Trust me folks, wed have a deal in a week that woman gets stuff done. And the papers are lapping up her work, but theres other stuff too. Fleet street has been busy overnight. The independents front page reports on the beginning of bombing raids in syria, with turkey targetting Kurdish Forces the paper says have been abandoned by the us president donald trump. The Financial Times also leading on the same story, featuring a picture of a Turkish Military convoy near the countrys southern border yesterday. Back to brexit on the front of the telegraph, which says the eu is insisting therell be no extension to article 50 without a new referendum, or an election. Now, to the big one. handwags at dawn reads the front of the metro, reporting on the story thats had the most attention on social media today, the feud between footballers wives Colleen Rooney and rebekah vardy. The suns leading with that same story waggro between the two women, after colleen accused rebekah of leaking personal stories about her to this very newspaper. The guardians cover teases a special investigation into the companies driving Climate Change, revealing the 20 firms behind a third of all carbon emissions. And the daily mail concentrating on falling rates of uptake for the the mmr vaccine, issuing a plea for parents to give them theirjab. We are going to start first of all, grace, on the daily telegraph, brexit, no extension without new referendum or election. This is a p pa re ntly referendum or election. This is apparently what the eu was insisting. Yes, well this is the president of the European Parliament saying that, yes, there will not be an Extension Granted by the European Union unless that is accompanied with a commitment of the renewal of the democratic process, which is something that they have been saying for a while. At this makes it very clear here. Having said that, it is not you know, we couldnt really imaginea not you know, we couldnt really imagine a situation in which they would grant an extension from ann johnson wouldnt immediately go for an election at the neck of one kind oi an election at the neck of one kind or another. He is slightly boxed and at this point, given he is going to have to respect the ben amendment, and he has stated that that is what he is going to do. So that leaves him with very limited options, in terms of you know, presenting the appearance of respecting the will of the people, as he would put it, and potentially going into an election immediately after asking for that extension, and putting it to the election, the People Versus Parliament frame. It is best option at this point. This seems fair enough, doesnt it, giving the fact that that you have extended in the past, and nothing has changed. The dynamic hasnt changed. They havent got any closer to a deal, so, referendum or election seems to make sense. Yes, it does. And i think at the moment as grace said, they are banking on this whole thing that boris has been saying hes been thwarted by the will of the people come in the private polling actually showing that the public are very supportive of boris when it comes to this, because he has kept his word. The question is what happens when you get past the deadline . I think with an election from of the messaging will become i dont want to do this, but i have been forced into it, because people dont like it when politicians you know, are basically using elections to further their own political cause. I think their own political cause. I think the problem with an election is that we may well end up right where we started, with another hung parliament, and that is the polling, is what he is saying to him that the tories may end up in a similar position. Having said that, i think of boris draws, by some stretch of the imagination, he will smash at smash it as a general smash it at the general election. Labour have taken more positions than the kama sutra. Taken more positions than the kama sutra. How taken more positions than the kama sutra. How many taken more positions than the kama sutra. How many positions are there, gilles . 45. Narrowing 252. But look, if an election as giles suggests, grace, all thats going to do is return us to the status quo, basically. Of a hung parliament, and no real clear way forward. Isnt the argument for a referendum going to build . Yes, it does, as giles was saying, it does look highly unlikely that we are going to end up coming out of the election with a majority of any out of the election with a majority ofany kind. Out of the election with a majority of any kind. Even if you know, by some stretch of the imagination, johnson does manage to get a deal, evenif johnson does manage to get a deal, even if there is some sort of deal, oi even if there is some sort of deal, or some sort of agreement after an election. Its hard to see how a government elected in these circumstances, basically you have got a 2 Party Electoral system from of those just make major parties being cut down the middle. On the one hand, labour voting by the dim. By the other places, and the same being set for the tories. Its ha rd to same being set for the tories. Its hard to see how the next parliament isnt going to retain any sort of stability. And will probably end up with another election within a year oi with another election within a year or two, with another election within a year ortwo, and if with another election within a year or two, and if not, then definitely another referendum. 0k, or two, and if not, then definitely another referendum. Ok, lets move onto the Financial Times then, giles. Borisjohnson, onto the Financial Times then, giles. Boris johnson, little onto the Financial Times then, giles. Borisjohnson, little caption down there on the bottom left, johnson unity pledged risks opening door to garage. Yes, i dont quite understand why they think that. He is. By pledging the tories would stand explicitly on a no deal manifesto. I think thats where, theres been a lot of talk about nonaggression pact between the tories and ukip seats. Johnson has ruled it out, because their belief is that it legitimises the brexit party. It legitimises them in terms of whats going to happen. So, i think the article goes on to talk about, he is going to see the red car today, the mood music, interestingly, at the conference la st interestingly, at the conference last week, that they did think that they were going to get somewhere, that eu was going to lean on the taoiseach, and that he was going to shift them and that in no deal brexit is really bad for ireland as well. But we havent seen that shift yet. Obviously, its all one big negotiation. The one thing that has annoyed me and all of us is that of course, annoyed me and all of us is that of course , we annoyed me and all of us is that of course, we should always be saying that no deal is on the table. I mean, this has been part of the problem with the narrative from the uk government. Half the cabinet saying we have got to leave with the deal, the other half saying we shouldnt. We look weak in the eyes of europe. It should have been, of course, of europe. It should have been, of course , we of europe. It should have been, of course, we will walk away. Part of this all comes back to theresa may losing the election, and losing majority 2 17. Collective responsibility and cabinet discipline broke down. We have been woeful, i mean we have been at the poker table, we would be bankrupt by iiow. Poker table, we would be bankrupt by now. Yes, but part of the percolation as well from leading brexiters, german car makers, they will be on the front with angela merkel, and they will say we will need a deal. They have not said jack. You like us, will that was, it was always very obvious that that was always very obvious that that was going to happen. The because ultimately, of course not make to some people. The uk has much more to lose from this than the European Union, from a disorderly brexit of any kind than the European Union. The european has a lot to lose, right . They are on the brink of a recession. Of the uk is also on the brink of a recession. And unless the government was going to go ahead with some sort of incredibly expensive stimulus package to absorb the impact of a no deal brexit, which isjust miles away from what the tories have been doing for the last ten years. Then there was no way this was not going to have a significant economic impact. On the story though, i think this overstates the extent to which johnson is likely to be negatively impacted by asking for this extension, and then going into a People Versus Parliament election. If you look at some of the polling, people, it doesnt look as though people, it doesnt look as though people will hold him personally accountable if he has to do what it looks like he doesnt want to do. Thats the key. Because its not his fault. He has been bounced into it. Your neck and i think the brexit Party Problem is a problem for johnson in in the northern seats that hes trying to win over. By that hes trying to win over. By appealing to that working class lee vote, because there are a lot of people in those parts of the world that we consider voting brexit party, they would never consider voting for the tories, and the polling reinforces that. So his best bet is some sort of informal arrangement with them. I make sure, all right, lets move on. The Financial Times. Grace, this was a story you are quite keen on. We see they unveil taxation over how to squeeze more they unveil taxation over how to squeeze more from they unveil taxation over how to squeeze more from big tech. They unveil taxation over how to squeeze more from big techm they unveil taxation over how to squeeze more from big tech. If this comes off, this is potentially really big. We have seen lots of stories over the past couple of yea rs, stories over the past couple of years, public multinational corporations not paying any tax in you know, the uk, various parts of europe. Less so the us. Because it has a different way of working this out. I basically, those companies are able to claim that they have made no profits, or very low profits in destinations with high Corporate Tax rates, and then through various account tricks, shifting those profits to make it look like they have been herbed and saved in bermuda, where they wouldnt have to pay any tax on them. This would change that by allowing nation states to tax big multinationals on something other than their reported profits. So say, revenue, orsome other sort of metric, which would move us towards a system of a very nerdy term, whats called. Or unitary taxation, where you split up the profits of these corporations, depending on the country that they are made in. This is going to be appealing to a hell of a lot of people. Yes, and i think that might a lot of public anger out there. Companies like amazon have been partly responsible for the slow death of the high street. Why should john lewes be paying all of its tax year . And amazon should be able to find loopholes, paying minimum amounts of tax. Because we have allowed it to happen. And the only way there is ever going to be. I am completely supportive of that. This casts a wide problem of, im afraid and going to have to agree with you on this, grace, on a big tech giants. Why are you afraid . Lam tech giants. Why are you afraid . Iamjoking. The big tech giants. Why are you afraid . I am joking. The big tech giants have been. For the i am joking. The big tech giants have been. Forthe likes i am joking. The big tech giants have been. For the likes of facebook, huber, deliveries, that have not been you know, acting responsibly. I think about time. These organisations are big enough governments, and they have huge. Which is why, frankly, grace, it has taken, if this happens, a global agreement in order to bring these people in line. You cant have the french doing it on their own command you know, the brits doing it on their own, or whatever. Its you know, the brits doing it on their own, orwhatever. Its got you know, the brits doing it on their own, or whatever. Its got to be across the globe. Estimated think that public pressure, most governments that have acted, have acted on the public pressure that has been generated on this issue. They have not only had public outrage and some of these stories, they have had big campaigns. There was one village in wales, for example, in the uk, decided that they would use the account measures do not pay any tax in that village. All right. This is what its like. Its great to see that that is now going into agreements. It needs to extend, to be fair. Women thats very true, actually. Going onto the giles. 21 20 find giles. 21 20 find out what these firms are involved in, its probably not a surprise. There are big names here. I think the name, bp, surprise. There are big names here. Ithink the name, bp, and surprise. There are big names here. I think the name, bp, and this sort of you know, being asked to say, look, the only way youre going to get around this or clamp down on them is by some sort of Global Carbon tax. Interestingly, a lot of these firms are state owned. So thats where that comes in, another issue about our people are they going to actually do anything about it . Welcome a public reaction. The environment agenda has shifted to the mainstream over the past. Absolutely, absolutely. To the mainstream over the past. Absolutely, absolutely. Exactly, and these companies, grace, the way that they are being targeted by, you know, people who run foundations, a rts know, people who run foundations, arts and colleges, and you know, just investing from these kinds of corporations. Yes, so of you have seen, the issues of environment are creeping up the poles in terms of being the most important issue that people prioritise in elections, especially in the uk, and other parts of the global north. The problem here is that a lot of these companies are state owned companies, the biggest, by a long way, are the Saudi Company saudi oil companies. Obviously, there is not nota companies. Obviously, there is not not a lot that consumers in the uk or wherever can do to stop that reaction. Theres something important to mention you, that a lot of this money ends up coming back into the uk, via arms deals with saudi arabia. There have been a lot of research recently into the links between the petrodollars coming from saudi arabia, and arms sales going back over there. And thats something we can do, actually, a lot of these firms, lots of these are publicly listed as well. And so they will start seeing a lot more pressure from shareholders in the coming years. Not least because there is this issue of the Global Carbon bubble. I e. , there is lots of firms and assets that look very overvalued, given what we likely will see in terms of Climate Change and decarbonization. So some of these firms are going to start to suffer. All right, 0k, onto a story that i know giles is deeply interested in. The front page of the sun there, colleen accuses rebekah ofa sun there, colleen accuses rebekah of a leak. Cracking tabloid story. Mac its a tabloid dream. The battle of the wags. Coueen of the wags. Colleen rooney has accused rebekah vardy, jimmy vardys wife of leaking stories about her. This very elaborate plot where she set up her instagram, fake stories on instagram, fake stories on instagram, she set her privacy settings, claims that Rebecca Vardy was the only person with access to them, and the story started appearing in the sun. Party has hit back and said i dont need the money, theres no reason why it would have done it. Why didnt you call me up before you you know, posted this story on twitter . Im not quite sure how you can set your instagram settings so any one person sees them. But yeah, it. You can. Its definitely possible. I mean, you know, the story could potentially work out. If you spend enough time on this stuff, there is a lot that you can do. I dont, im
