Gunshot. A man opens fire outside a synagogue in germany at least two people have been killed. Mps are to sit in parliament on a saturday to try to find the way forward on brexit before october 31st. And the social media spat that has seen Colleen Rooney turn online detective. And coming up on bbc news, scotland set up a Rugby World Cup showdown with japan, with a comfortable bonus point win over russia in shizuoka. Good evening and welcome to the bbcs news at six. All 555 thomas cook stores that were closed when the company went bust last month have been saved bought by hays travel, a firm set up a0 years ago and based in sunderland. The move could save up to 2,500 jobs, as the husband and wife who set up hays say they plan to re open theirformer rivals shops immediately. For them, and many thomas cook employees, its been an emotional day. Colletta smith reports. For the last two and a half weeks, nicola and her colleagues have been living a nightmare. Theres been lots of tears, lots of anger. Its just been lonely. Yeah. Where can we meet up . Because the routine is gone. I think we have just been trying to process it, havent we . That what we loved, just trying to get our heads around the fact that it wasnt there any more. I think the first week was any more. I think the first week was a days, you know, just cant believe it and then you just kind of started to feel really sad at what weve lost and then obviously, this third week, ive applied for anotherjob. But, today, there are whispers of good news. Hays travel announced they are buying thomas cooks stores, but it seems too good to be true. Branch manager gemma gets through to the team at hays. True. Branch manager gemma gets through to the team at haysm true. Branch manager gemma gets through to the team at hays. It was on profit, yes. I am actually sat with all of my team now and they would all be happy to come back to the brand. Brilliant, so is that it, then, a definite that the stories opening . The stores opening. Thank you for your help. Bye bye. They are opening hucknall and we have just got to all contact them 0h, have just got to all contact them oh, god, that is amazing. Hays are based in sunderland and the family firm has expanded across the uk over the last a0 years. They have already got 190 stores but, today, they made the biggest financial gamble of their lives. We are not a big corporate, we their lives. We are not a big corporate , we are their lives. We are not a big corporate, we are a family business. We value and empower our staff like nobody else and that is probably one of the main differentiators. Overnight, hays have managed to buy access into really big chunks of the market in the uk. They have got presence 110w market in the uk. They have got presence now in the east midlands, scotla nd presence now in the east midlands, scotland and in wales, as well as the north west of england. But it is a lot more concerning for staff in areas in yorkshire and the north east, where there is now going to be two hays travels on high streets like this within a stones throw of each other. They are opening hucknall and we can have our jobs back. There is still a big market for Package Holidays and the staff have plenty of loyal customers they think will be back through the doors. Now theirjobs and lives are back on track. I cant believe it, im crying, yeah. Colletta smith, hucknall, nottinghamshire. Our Business Editor simon jack joins me now. What can hays do that thomas cook couldnt . Obviously it is great news for all of those employees and it is a reminder that thomas cook didnt go bust because people dont want to go on Package Holidays. In fact, there is evidence that they like the protection of having a package holiday. What killed thomas cook was dead, they had no room for manoeuvre when things went wrong and i think the problem you raised there is right, one of the weaknesses of thomas cook is the way we book a Package Holidays has changed, it is much more online and much less high street and i would be amazed if the 555 stores that are open now are still open next year. Great news for the package holiday, it is alive and well, we are booking it differently but having said that, being on the high street is still seen as a witness and we will have to see how this particular project goes. Simon, thank you. The fighting in syria has taken a new turn, with turkey launching airstrikes and us allies accusing america of betrayal. Turkey has begun a major offensive against Kurdish Forces who control the north east of the country. The kurds are currently involved in joint military operations with american troops in syria and have played a key role capturing thousands of is fighters. Its unclear what will now happen to those fighters. The kurds have accused the us of abandoning them to face the military might of turkey, which regards the kurds as terrorists. Turkey says it wants to set up a 30 kilometre safe zone along the border to resettle up to two million Syrian Refugees. Our Diplomatic CorrespondentJames Robbins reports. The beginnings of turkish bombardment. A series of large explosions in the town of ras al ain, just inside northern syria. As turkis forces started a long planned offensive, already widely condemned by their nato allies. Many civilians, suddenly in harms way, started fleeing. A localjournalist described the scene. Thousands of people, thousands of people emigrating to the south side. The turkish army are shelling by mortars everywhere. Turkeys resident Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the military offensive was to create a safe zone to how some of the 3. 6 million Syrian Refugees inside turkey tu rkeys Syrian Refugees inside turkey turkeys president. But he also wa nts to turkeys president. But he also wants to clear the area of turkish militias. The key is, some of those we re militias. The key is, some of those were key allies of the United States and britain who helped to defeat that you had lists of so called Islamic State. But turkey tends to regard any armed occurred as a terrorist. That area is needed for our safety and security, for the Syrian Refugees to go back to so they can go back to their normal lives and there is no vacuum to be filled by any terrorist network and also to make sure that syria is not divided territorially. Over recent days, turkey has been building up its forces after wanting to do precisely this for years. Turkey believes it has a green light from president trump, plucked from a hailstorm of contradictory president ial tweets. One threat and he would destroy turkeys economy if they now go too far. One threatened. The United States have been pulling back some of its troops that could be in turkeys path. Some of the Kurdish Forces turkey could try to destroy it have argued their hard won try to destroy it have argued their ha rd won battle try to destroy it have argued their hard won battle against is is now being put at risk. France and germany have already condemned the turkish action. Nato as a whole has been more sympathetic but is cautioning strongly there are grave risks if turkey goes to far. Too far. All agrarian is near the syrian border. What is happening there . O rla border. What is happening there . Orla guerin. We havejust left at the border area where we were able to see and hear the beginnings of that turkish bombardment. Just across the border wall, we were able to see smoke rising from the turkish town town of al abby at, there was also incoming fire from the turkish side. We could see it was a residential area, we could see high rise blocks, and we are no from the information coming out of syria that civilians are once again having to flee. Who knows how many times these people have had to pick up their bags and go and while turkey are describing this operation as the springs of peace, certainly for those trapped on the other side, this is one more round battle in what has been an agonisingly long war. This is simply the beginning, what we are seeing now is strikes taking place from the air. Turkey has made it clear, though, this will also be a land assault. We expect to see that coming in the next few days and there are grave warnings are concerns from the International Community about what this will mean in the humanitarian side of it for all the syrians and refugees that are trapped there but also the key question, could it undo progress made in the global battle against Islamic State . Orla guerin on the turkish syrian border, thank you. For the first time in almost a0 years, mps are to hold a special sitting of parliament on a saturday to try and decide the way forward on brexit. It will follow a crunch two Day European Union summit beginning on the 17th october. The parliamentary sitting is scheduled for the 19th of october. A last minute brexit deal could be presented to mps. Currently, the 31st october is the day we are due to leave the eu. The eus brexit negotiator Michel Barnier says the eu cant agree to the current deal proposed by the government, though it will continue to negotiate. Our Political EditorLaura Kuenssberg has more. Notjust her majesty not just her majesty who notjust her majesty who will smell the new paint. A last refurb for parliament before a new session sta rts parliament before a new session starts next week. A quick makeover before the moment when the Prime Ministers political hopes on brexit might really do or die. The cabinet still claim they want a deal with the eu. But the deadline to get one this month seems less real. We are going out into an important period, an important phase with the European Council next week but what i would say is that this government is focused on leaving on october the sist, focused on leaving on october the 31st, with or without a deal. Deal or no deal is mainly down to this man, the irish taoiseach leo varadkar, who wants a deal but not on borisjohnsons terms. Varadkar, who wants a deal but not on Boris Johnsons terms. It is the position of the uk government that Northern Ireland must leave the Eu Customs Union and must be part of the uk Customs Union, no matter what the uk Customs Union, no matter what the people of Northern Ireland thing. That is their position at the moment and that is one that is of great difficulty to us. Only seven days from decision day, in brussels, the uk wants customers to be different on either side of the irish border. They say the difference ought to be between Northern Ireland and the rest of the uk. Sojust listen Northern Ireland and the rest of the uk. So just listen to the European Parliament this afternoon. Imagine all of these sides coming together . Personally, i dont exclude a deal. We are working on a deal and we are not accepting this blame game which started in london. We are not to be blamed. Northern ireland is an integral part of the United Kingdom through the consent of the people of Northern Ireland. We will not be torn out of its internal market and Customs Union and we are not the eus Customs Union and we are not the eus bargaining chip. You may have conned a very weak and gullible mrs may into signing up into a new treaty from which there was no escape, but you are not conning us. Borisjohnson is a liar, a charlatan, a racist, a National Disgrace and as a grandmother even in his own constituency says, a filthy piece of toerag. Whatever happens in brussels, on saturday the 19th of october, the Prime Minister is expected to call mps here to westminster for an historic city and, to thrash out what really happens next, deal or no deal. And if there is no agreement, mps have already changed the law to force him to delay but he will kick and scream to delay but he will kick and scream to protest to try and avoid it and try to pin the blame on them. The Prime Minister has an opportunity on the 19th to announce he has obeyed the 19th to announce he has obeyed the law, signed the letter, sent it off to brussels to ask for the extension which will give us time to work out a sensible relationship with europe. Our politicians, though, have already had more than three years to do that. Perhaps, though, now, we are on the verge of decisive days. Laura kuenssberg, bbc news, westminster. At least two people have been killed in a shooting at a synagogue in the german city of halle. A gunman opened fire outside the building. The head of the localjewish community said the attacker tried to get into the synagogue, where up to 80 people were marking yom kippur. Police have one suspect under arrest but a manhunt is under way. Jenny hill has the latest. Calm, deliberate, shattering the peace of a quiet city. An eyewitness found as a man dressed in combat gear opened fire outside a synagogue in halle. A woman was killed as she walked past the building. Watch how relaxed he seems, taking his time to a p pa re ntly relaxed he seems, taking his time to apparently reload the weapon before firing again. In other images, a gunman stalks the streets, not far from the synagogue. A kebab shop was also attacked, a man inside killed by an armed assailant who reportedly fired into the building. Translation the man approached the kebab shop. I noticed immediately that something was wrong because he was wearing a helmet and had an assault rifle. Then he threw something that looked like a hand grenade with gaffer tape on, which bounced back off the door frame and did not land inside the shop. Fear and uncertainty on the streets of halle. Two people murdered by an unknown number of attackers. It is yom kippur, the jewish unknown number of attackers. It is yom kippur, thejewish day of atonement. Halles jews yom kippur, thejewish day of atonement. Hallesjews had to be escorted from the synagogue. They we re escorted from the synagogue. They were inside when the attack began. Tonight, explosives robots in action. It is feared the attackers may have left bombs behind. A city in mourning after the most holy day of the jewish year was so violently interrupted. The German Interior Ministry have said they are working on the assumption that this was an act of anti semitism. The police, who earlier in the day said they might be looking for a number of suspects, now seem to be indicating that this could be the work of a single perpetrator. Earlier unconfirmed reports suggest perhaps a german man in his 20s. People in halle have now been told it is safe to leave their homes after a day which has been filled with confusion and horror. This week weve been looking at the devastating impact of knife crime on young people and their families. Figures given to the bbc show more than 3000 people have been injured by a blade this year in london alone. An additional 67 have died. Every attack is a tragedy for all those involved, but there are wider impacts too on whole communities. In the third of his special reports on knife crime, clive myrie has been speaking to some of the People Living in one borough of the capital thats been hit hard by the violence. The ripples of knife crime spread far. Individuals may be wounded, but whole communities are damaged. There were members of staff that were trying to massage this boys heart, you know, outside of school, and they have never, ever recovered from that. The violence in a community breeds dread that your friend, your relative could be next. Before, it always used to feel like it was really far away. But at this point, it feels like its at home now. Back in my day, when we had a fight, fisticuffs, it was over in two days and finished. You know, youre 0k, youre friends again. But now, people bring the blade. But there is hope. There are so many young people that are coming up and have got so much good to say and so much to do, and they are not being shown. We wanted to hear how one community in haringey, north london is coping. The borough has one of the highest rates of knife crime in the capital. These are the voices of teachers, a bus driver, social worker, a retired policewoman ordinary citizens living in extraordinary times, trying to do the right thing. I think about five, six years, weve lost, i think, three students. One was killed right outside our school gates. It impacted the whole school, from every member of staff that taught that student, through all those kids that, even if they didnt know him very well, it had a very negative effect on our school in terms of how kids felt. We had to bring in lots of counsellors. People forget the wider impact it has on a community. My boys are still quite young, you know, seven and four, but theres definitely a concern, you know, living in london, inner city, everywhere you look theres gang culture, there is knife crime. You turn your head and, oh, someone else has been stabbed. I can think of three people that i know personally who have been stabbed. One of them ended fatally. And now i think its kind of got to a point where whenever i hear things like that in the area, i think, is it somebody that i know . The group, however, was keen to keep a sense of perspective. It is the minority that are doing the bad. Its the majority that are doing so well. And lets be clear, black children, our black boys, are not just rappers, not just footballers, not just athletes. They are doctors, lawyers, authors. They are so much more. But in london, more than half of male knife crime offenders are black. Our group feel a key part of the problem is the high rate of School Exclusions among black boys. I had a group of year 11 boys. These guys were all big lads, big bruisers. But i remember this particular ta who was in my classroom. He was a middle aged white guy. As far as im concerned, im seeing 15 year old kids. Hes seeing something different. So, by the end of the lesson, hes like this. This is the teaching assistant. Hes like this. Hes shaking. Hes afraid. Our kids are feared. Can i say it . Can ijust be blatant . If its a white kid, big white kid, they are staying in the classroom. At this moment in london, its young black men that are killing young black men, yeah . In other parts of the country, its not young black men killing young black men. If everyones got that fear of the young black man, if everybodys aspiration of the young black man is low, then what is that young black man going to ever be . Because if no ones inspiring you at home, if no ones doing that in school, yeah, i tell you what theres someone on that corner that will be doing it. Yeah . And its as simple as that. There is a sadness in this room, a seriousness too, that Wider Society beyond the communities directly affected by knife crime remain too complacent about whats going on. It isnt until we all wake up to the tragedies and the pain that Real Solutions can be found. Clive myrie, bbc news. Thousands of children across britain are having several teeth removed in hospital because of whats being described as a double whammy of high need and poor access to nhs services. The British Dental Association have told the bbc that families, especially in coastal communities, face Epic Journeys to get the care they need. As part of a special series of reports about the challenges and opportunities in coastal britain, Jemma Woodman has been to West Cornwall to find out more. Just a warning her report contains scenes of teeth being removed. Ok, so weve gotjasmine and its extractions in three quadrants. This is the reality of tooth decay in britain. There are a lot of Little People coming through with lots of different needs. It is quite a hard session to go through. Nine year old jasmine has to have five teeth removed at cornwalls main hospital damaged by sugary drinks and snacks, despite mum tracys best efforts. Even the no added sugar stuff that we get, that we dont think is too bad. It still has one sugar in it, one cube. So, were only to have juice when . When were having knife and fork meals. So, upper right. More than 38,000 children go through this every year in england alone. Its distressing for everyone involved. Theres nothing worse than watching the childrens eyes roll as they fall asleep and its the parents reaction. People dont realise how difficult its going to be until youre there on the day and its your child. Tooth decay in children is on the rise, with as many as one in five having problems before they even start school. There we go, all done. And its coastal areas that are among the hardest hit. The British Dental Association told us that impoverished seaside communities face a double whammy of both tooth decay and poor access to services. Thats not just a problem for children. On the harbour side in newquay, helps at hand for mouths all at sea. Im getting my teeth done today because ive got a shambles in my mouth. Just because of the waiting lists, more than anything. I aint registered with any dentist because i never make an appointment. For an actual checkup, i dont know, 15 year ago, 20 years ago . I dont know. This team offers free treatment in a county where the average wait, even when you have a dentist, is 16 months. We find it very difficult to recruit in cornwall. Most are dentists that arejust qualified, unless they are from cornwall, they dont necessarily want to come here. Nhs england agrees and says, at the same time, demand is growing. Hello is it done . Its all finished. Forjasmine, the worst is over. But thousands of others face a similar ordeal or a long wait for the care that could prevent it. Jemma woodman, bbc news. A row has broken out on social media after coleen rooney, wife of former england player wayne, accused rebekah vardy, wife of former england payerjamie, of leaking information from her Instagram Account and giving it to a newspaper. Coleen rooney said she spent months working out who was behind the leak. Rebekah vardy has denied it. Lizo mzimba has more. Theyre married to footballers who have played for england, but both women have become well known figures in their own right. Rebekah vardy has taken part in the reality show im a celebrity get me out of here. Coleen rooney has been a guest presenter on shows like the x factor. Im disgusted that im even having to deny this. Many have applauded coleen rooney, others have questioned whether making public accusations on twitter was the fairest way to act towards someone who was previously a close friend. At the Rugby World Cup, scotland and wales have been in action today. Scotland were runaway winners against russia, while wales triumphed in a thrilling test against fiji. From japan, our Sports CorrespondentKatie Gornall has more. World cups are all about making your mark. So far, wales have made a good impression at this tournament, having beaten australia, a win against fiji would see them through to the knockout stages, and then they can really start to dream of what might be. Through to the knockout stages, and then they can really start to dream of what might be. But Alun Wyn Jones knew that fiji would demand their full attention. Wales had ten days to prepare for this, yet they were undone after just four minutes, the man they call the bus was away and there was no stopping him. Fiji would race ten points clear before wales found their feet. Josh adams with two tries to end the first half on a high. The lead would switch again in what was a bruising, brutal game, but wales eventually muscled their way through. This was for adamss patrick before Liam Williams gave them some much needed breathing space with a bonus point try. Wales, exhausted but still unbeaten. So, while survive a thriller against fiji to make the quarterfinals with a game to spare, while earlier the pressure was on scotland as they knew only a win would do against russia. And scotland got off to the perfect start. Adam hastings, son of former captain gavin, settling any early nerves. Russia needed a comeback but instead found only calamity. A horrible slip gifted hastings another, and from there, russia were run ragged as scotland ran in nine tries to keep their world cup hopes alive. They now have to beat hosts japan in their final group game. However, organisers have yet to confirm what their plans are for dealing with an incoming typhoon, so no one yet knows where, when or if scotlands game will go ahead. Katy gornall, bbc news, injapan. Time for a look at the weather. Heres nick miller. Another day of sunshine and showers today. Lets look at the radar picture this afternoon. You can see where most of the showers have been, packing into western scotland, most in the west but some, on the strong wind, have pushed further east, some heavy and thundery as well. Tonight, many of these showers will fade. They will continue rattling into western scotland on the strong wind, a few for Northern England and Northern Ireland. Many places look dry by the end of the night. Windy, so temperature is not going down too far. Tomorrow, one area of low pressure m oves far. Tomorrow, one area of low pressure moves away but another one comes from the atlantic, bringing more rain. After the mainly dry start, bar a few showers in scotland, we will pick up on this area of cloud and rain feeding north across the uk. For south wales and southern england, the rain will be light and patchy. More substantial rain is across north wales, Northern England, Northern Ireland and southern scotland. Still quite windy. Friday and into the weekend, this weather front will hang around, particularly across parts of england and wales. On friday, wet into wales and wales. On friday, wet into wales and parts of north west england. South of that, a lot of clout. 18 celsius. North of that, parts of Northern England, Northern Ireland and scotland, sunshine and showers. For england and wales, a lot of clout around at the weekend, and it will rain at times. If you prefer a brighter weather hour long with downpours, scotland and Northern Ireland. There will be sunshine, but the showers will be heavy at times.
