Well be getting the inside track on a business thats key to making sure you dont get that special person in your life the wrong perfume or cologne. Plus as we focus on the cost to carers worldwide wed like to hear from you, are you one of the millions of workers whove had to leave theirjob to care for a loved one . Tell us your story. Just use the hashtag bbcworklife. Hello and a warm welcome to our new Business Programme that tackles the issues affecting our work and the lives we lead. Today we begin with caring for the elderly, its a global issue with many of us leaving work to look after relatives and partners. A report out today reveals the economic impact. According to aviva, in the uk alone, 20 of workers aged 45 and over expect to quit theirjobs to care for a relative or partner. And age uk estimates that the cost of those workers leaving the economy is around 1. 8 billion a year. However paying others for care is also expensive. In the us for example, a private room in a nursing home costs on average over 100,000 a year. And the care burden is growing. Those aged 65 and over are expected to exceed a quarter of the global population by 2050. Laura stewart smith, avivas Financial EducationDevelopment Manager is with me now. The scale of the challenges are clear but what we do about it . You are absolutely right, it is very much a growing challenge that we face and i think its something that we do have the tools to do something about, so i can talk about what aviva are doing. We have introduced a carer policy which gives our employees the opportunity to take 70 hours per year in addition to the annual leave to support them with any caring responsibilities that they have. In addition to that, we have a Network Community which is aimed at supporting individuals and aimed at supporting individuals and a number of other things which we are looking to roll out as well. Is that because, with caring, its sometimes an invisible issue that people deal with behind the scenes. When you go on Maternity Leave it clear what you do and people talk about it openly but caring seems to be hidden. Yes and people do not necessarily identify as a carer. They may know that they have to help their mum oran they may know that they have to help their mum or an elderly relative out and they take time out of their way to do that but they dont recognise it as being a caring responsibility. It is something which is going to be become a growing need as the years progress because we are seeing an ageing population. If we add to that, we talk about an ageing population and unwell relatives, but theissues population and unwell relatives, but the issues of families who have children with disabilities, it is World Mental Health day tomorrow, Mental Health issues as well, you could be a carer because of that issue in the home. Absolutely, and you might also find you are a victim of the sandwich generation, individuals having to care for elderly relatives but also having to support younger relatives as well. Grandchildren and things like that. Aviva have highlighted they are doing a lot to support those who have these responsibilities, but what about people who dont have that the support, who work for small or Medium Sized Companies or in the developing world where there is not that social network to help them . think its becoming more of a priority for employers and it needs to have that play off population in the workforce. We have a significant number of people in the workforce over the age of 45 and a lot of the skills and expertise are tied up in their individuals. It needs to become a priority for employers and im sure that it will be. Thank you for coming in. Thank you for some of your stories, many of you have been in touch already, we will mention some of them in the programme. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news. China and the us are to resume trade talks later this week to try to end a standoff over tariffs which has damaged the global economy. The new head of the International Monetary fund says the global fallout of these tensions, with the added stress of a no deal brexit, would knock almost 1 off Global Growth next year. Twitter has apologised for unitentionally using the emails addresses and phone numbers provided by users for account security to enable targeted advertising. In a statement, twitter said it cannot say with certainty how many people were impacted. The us drug firm Johnson Johnson has been told to pay 8 billion in punitive damages to a man over claims he was not warned that an anti psychotic drug could lead to breast growth. Earlier this year, the company was ordered to pay 572 million for its part in fuelling 0klahomas opioid addiction crisis. Beijing has criticised apple for allowing an app that helps protesters track the movement of police in hong kong. Sharanjit leyl joins us from our Asia Business hub. What exactly does this app do . Well, it essentially allows protesters to see where the police are active in hong kong so they can potentially avoid those areas. The communist pa rtys potentially avoid those areas. The communist partys flagship peoples daily newspaper has criticised apple for its decision to approve such an app, which has been used very widely by protesters. According to the paper it helps facilitate illegal activities but thats not all. Apple is also being targeted for allowing its itunes store to carry a song called glory to hong kong, somewhat ofa called glory to hong kong, somewhat of a rallying cry to protesters in the midst of a pro democracy protest. It has been described by the newspaper is advocating independence. It called the behaviour by apple reckless, the softwa re behaviour by apple reckless, the software poisonous and said apples moves software poisonous and said apples m oves a re software poisonous and said apples moves are a betrayal of chinese peoples feelings and apple is joining otherforeign peoples feelings and apple is joining other Foreign Companies who are struggling to navigate the Pro Democracy Movement in hong kong. The issue has even drawn the National Basketball association into a firestorm over a tweet which has caused partners to stop doing business with the nba and because advertisers because advertisers to stop advertising during the games. It is that story, the problem of these escalating tensions between china and the us which is causing markets globally to be dragged lower. Key trade talks taking place in washington tomorrow and friday, and what does this mean in the run up to those for any progress in trade talks between these economies . Lets look at europe, you can see the that it is a slightly upward trend in europe but i doubt we will see much strong again today. Many strong gains today. Now to brexit, and what appear to be the diminishing prospects of a deal by the october 31st, the deadline for the uk to leave the eu. The irish leader leo varadkar has said itll be very difficult to reach a Brexit Agreement by then. Adam fleming is our correspondent in brussels. What is being said there about what has been coming out of downing street over the last day or so . Yesterday morning, the situation was that downing street briefed out some details about a call with Angela Merkel, and lots of people here did not recognise the Angela Merkel that was portrayed in that call. She was reported as saying things which are just not eu policy, for example this idea that Northern Ireland would have to stay in a Customs Union for ever. The eu position is that you have to have the option of Northern Ireland potentially staying in the eu customs own for as long as necessary , eu customs own for as long as necessary, not forever. Thats why people were sceptical about that. There was also a big long series of Text Messages from a Senior Adviser in downing street which was published by a magazine called the spectator which took a very tough line on how the eu the uk would behave towards the eu if they did not sign up to the new proposals put forward by the uk. They think it is a personal view of a particular high profile official in downing street, not the uk government position. Then you had a very incendiary tweet from donald tusk saying that the uk Prime Minister was playing a stupid blame game, even throwing some latin in for the classics loving pm. After the call with leo varadkar yesterday, it was then more diplomatic readout, more cool and classic diplomatic language so the rhetoric has been turned down a bit. Thank you for that and the latin as well. Adam says the rhetoric has turned down, but if you look at the papers today, it is full of it. Joining me is 0li barrett, serial entrepreneur and host of the lens podcast. Welcome. You have been looking at the guardian today, all of the papers have got to this, across europe they have as well. This whole issue of who is to blame, how these talks are going, from your perspective . You talk about across europe, across the world. You sometimes wonder what business across the world to think about britain at the moment, whether we head for no deal or another delay, what it means for Small Businesses is more uncertainty. That is not backed the room, itjust means carry on. backed the room, itjust means carry on. That does not mean back to the planning room, it means carry on. The general thing is that they are not as prepared as they could be. Is that because they have not got that contingency funds to put those plans on place . A lot of Small Businesses keep money in cash. There are certain things they have to be doing, certain registrations, like applying for a driving licences and passports, that all businesses into export and import have to do if they wa nt to export and import have to do if they want to trade after brexit. You support Small Businesses, from your perspective, how involved are they getting . What we hearfrom perspective, how involved are they getting . What we hear from the institute of directors and the confederation for british industry, two big lobby groups in the uk, small and medium size businesses are not prepared, is that what you see . 9796 not prepared, is that what you see . 97 of businesses are not Large Companies and we only hear about the Large Companies. You see a cacophony of noise across the headlines about brexit, the reality when i chair big event is that brexit is the b word, the unspoken, people are almost not talking about it. There is a worry to that that if there is a currency fluctuation, if they have logistics in their supply chains, they have to get planning but it remains unspoken in reality. If only on our channel all of our viewers are saying, it is not unspoken here the telegraph here, nhs boss says that web giants are cashing in on the misery of children suffering from gaming addiction. Lots of us parents are worried about this, extremely worried about this, extremely worried given the amount of time our children spend on games and online. This is a massive issue, a new centre for internet and gaming disorders which hasjust centre for internet and gaming disorders which has just opened. Its for 13 to 25 year olds who would be going in person or over skype because they have an addiction. The world health 0rganization classifies gaming as an addiction, Mental Health disorder. We need to think long and hard not just about what we do but how we prevented. The telegraph points out that those in charge of the nhs point the finger at gaming makers and Big Tech Companies like facebook which own instagram and say, you need to do more. Is that the right place to point the finger or should we all play a part in this . Its a shared responsibility. The fact is you have companies who are trying to make the game as compelling and expensive as possible. Its not good enough to wait and pick up the pieces when young people suffer those addictions. You look around the world at what is happening. What does the Gaming Companies say in their defence . They must say that children get out of gaming something good. They are under huge pressure, sometimes some amazing skills can be identified through the best gamers in the world. Injapan, you are reminded when you game for a set amount of time, in south korea you cannot game between midnight and 6am. A nanny state, that will stop argument in my home yes, let the state stepping after being made redundant, our next guest at the age of 48 started a new business. We will get the inside track on the business which make sure you get the right centre for your special person. Self employment is booming in cities, rising by 44 in the uk since 2008, outpacing the National Average by almost 25 . But poor access to training amongst people who work for themselves poses a grave threat to the future growth of our cities, according to the centre for cities. The think tank is calling for the government to take action and help self employed workers future proof their jobs and businesses. Joining us now is centre for cities chief executive, andrew carter. Welcome. Tell us in more detail what you want the government to do. think when you look at self employed people, we know that they are less likely to undertake training than employees. We want the government to introduce more allowances around how they treat training. Currently self employed people, if they undertake training that relates to their currentjob, they can offset that when they make their tax returns. They cannot do that if they wa nt to returns. They cannot do that if they want to upscale or change occupations. I think in a very fluid and dynamic labour market, that will be critical. Is that realistic, to think that the government can take this on . I think it is, we know we have a problem with skills in this country, it affects all manner of things around wages and productivity. Its critical, if we wa nt productivity. Its critical, if we want our economy to be more prosperous, we need to do more skills and encourage more people to undertake skills investment. Skills and encourage more people to undertake skills investmentm there a link between the strength of a local economy and self employment rates . A local economy and self employment rates . Yes, particularly the nature of self employment. The stronger the economy, the more likely that those and self employment will be higher skilled. Design, technology and it. In the weaker economy, self employed people will be lower skilled work in transport or construction. In the stronger economies, self employment is often a second job like a hobby and in the weaker economy it is often the first source of income. We will leave it there. This is a big talking point and many of you have beenin talking point and many of you have been in touch about this because many of you are working independently or self employed. Many of you are working independently or selfemployed. Some people like it a lot compared to having their previous boss. There are benefits and pitfalls, get in touch. Youre watching worklife. A reminder of our top story a new report puts the cost of workers leaving the uk economy to care for a loved one at nearly at nearly 2 billion a year. Thats just weighing up the cost in the uk. No, they never come with a scent. They are tailormade for each brand. Hold them up and see if the director can get them. Just show you the variety. I dont want to be condescending but what is a big deal, it is a little bit of paper . It is absorbent board. That isa paper . It is absorbent board. That is a fragrance from some people who we re is a fragrance from some people who were guests a few weeks ago here. We have fragrance reef retailers, manufacturers have fragrance reef retailers, manufacture rs across have fragrance reef retailers, manufacturers across the world, we have 55 countries and counting. This all have 55 countries and counting. This a ll started have 55 countries and counting. This all started because were made redundant . Yes, into my late 40s, i am in my 505 now. I decided to up self employed, a5 a print management consultant, self employed, a5 a print management con5ulta nt, supplying self employed, as a print management consultant, supplying packaging to cosmetic companies generally. Tags, labels, boxes. Test strips and losses were the things that the companies were interested in, they we re companies were interested in, they were asking for my advice and expertise. Sol were asking for my advice and expertise. So i decided on a whim, letsjust expertise. So i decided on a whim, lets just concentrate on that. Expertise. So i decided on a whim, letsjust concentrate on that. 58 million blotters this year we will have distributed by the end of the year. Thats amazing because to go for more you are doing now to where you came from, age 48 made redundant, how did you have the drive to start Something Like that . The print industry has been in decline. I have always wanted to be my own boss. Ijust thought, give it a go. If anything it has made me more energetic. We are now growing the business so recover overseas as well as the uk. The business so recover overseas as wellas the uk. Its the business so recover overseas as well as the uk. Its notjust perfume, 65 is used for perfumes and fragrances, but 35 of it is for other uses like testing aroma and costly, whiskey, gin, even cannabis oil as well. You are right about the print industry, its very cyclical and dependent, if youre economy is doing well, youre Printing Industry has a lot of demand. So you have picked something which is pretty low cost to do so thats something which is not so dependent on the economy. The perfume industry, its things like lipstick and chocolate, its not exactly recession proof but people still like fragrances wherever you go, if you go through duty free or shop at christmas you look at buying a fragrance. The Fragrance Companies we work with come to us because they want to make sure they get the right of the board to make sure it showcases the brand and does the job. How long did it ta ke and does the job. How long did it take you to pick yourself up after such a blow to your career at that age, and really start focusing on going forward, something positive . You a very you have a very supportive wife, probably . Yes, she has been through thick and thin, she still is thereby the scenes thank you very much. In a moment well run through some viewer responses to our twitter question are you a carer for an elderly relative and what has that meant for you . But first, lets get some advice from a top boss. John vincent took over as head of of the fast food chain leon five years ago. He saw himself as a general, leading his staff into to too many businesses are fixated on needing aggressive Business Plans and no one in the organisation can actually tell you what that means. I was very much thinking about myself as a general leading an army. The sense of needing to win a war, you think might just lead the sense of needing to win a war, you think mightjust lead to better performance from people, but actually the beer more fearful your team is, the more tunnel vision they are and the less likely they are to spot opportunities coming along. Fundamentally, it was about not fighting. And it started to allow me to physically relax, and it also gave me the set of tools to think about how to run the company better. Your job isnt think about how to run the company better. Yourjob isnt to be a great hero as ceo. Yourjob is to create an environment in which people can flourish. The first impact it has had on the company is at the results have got better. Each restaurant is growing their sales. The compound growth of all of the restaurants that we had four years ago is 40 . My that we had four years ago is 40 . Myc0 that we had four years ago is 40 . My c0 secret is, stop thinking about business as war and think about your job as the head gardener. Not to necessarily force anything, these pla nts necessarily force anything, these plants will grow, your people will grow. The creative environment, the garden, that allows them to grow. At the top of the show, we asked you whether you care brian reid says, ive been on a career break forjust over five years now to look after my elderly mum, ill have to look at going back to work sooner than later a stressful decision for both of us andre hallam says mum looked after her mother who had a fall and had dementia and she has since recently looked after her sister for more than a year. It was quite draining for her upon observing it from my view. So many of you have been in touch. Katie says, she says, it is a critical issue for all of us. For eve ryo ne critical issue for all of us. For everyone who is an unpaid carer, its mentioned so little. They talked about it being the invisible carer, didnt they . Absolutely.
