Why that matters is because if there is any suggestion 01 because if there is any suggestion or proof, more importantly, that mr johnson did intervene on her behalf, then he would have had to declare it in the code of conduct, that she was a friend. Thats the missing part of the jigsaw. We dont quite know whether Boris Johnson did the jigsaw. We dont quite know whether borisjohnson did seek to use his office in any way to lean on city officials or to lean on london and partners, the organisation responsible for promoting london, to get her on those trade trips and also get her the grants. We do know that he went to speak at a number of events she organised, three events, i think. And we know borisjohnson was on three of the trade trips she was on three of the trade trips she was on. That raises the question of whether in any case he should have declared that she was a close friend. So i suspect there will be a lot of headlines about her refusal to deny they had a relationship, but in terms of the politics, the big question is still to be answered, i think, which is, did in any way borisjohnson intervene think, which is, did in any way Boris Johnson intervene on think, which is, did in any way borisjohnson intervene on her behalf because of their relationship. More than 13,000 who suffer from it in the uk have shared their experiences with the bbc they say it has badly affected their education, careers, relationships and Mental Health. Following the research, mps are today launching an inquiry into its impact. Broadcaster emma barnett has been speaking about living with the condition. I was in agony. My periods could be very heavy, they could be lighter, but the one constant theme was how much pain i was in. I mean, it was bone grinding. And yet when i went to see doctors with my mum, they would say, this is whatjust some girls have. You are listening to emma barnett on 5live. As someone who often interviews politicians, i get answers for a living, or i try my very best, i had failed to get answers from doctors and i saw all sorts of doctors over the years. I didnt know until the age of 31 i had endometriosis. Id gone 21 years without diagnosis. Endometriosis is a condition in women where cells that represent like the womb lining, that should leave your body during a period, dont, and instead, they stay within your body and attach themselves to different organs, building up lesions and causing really difficult pain for women. In the largest study of its kind, the bbc has spoken to more than 13,000 women with endometriosis. Nearly all said it had affected their career, sexual relationships and Mental Health. Around half said it impacted their ability to have children. And half said it led to suicidal thoughts. Im going off to meet mum and daughter victoria and jessica who both have endometriosis. I think people just think its a painful period. Oh, shut up, its a painful period, get on with it. I really wish it was a painful period and i only had to cope with it once a month, but we live with pain every single day. Depression is a massive part of endometriosis as well. It has been for us. Ive been on antidepressants since i was 17, which is the same time i was diagnosed. At its worst, how bad has endometriosis affected you . It affects everything. Everything. Ive been so poorly recently, ive been at home, not being able to go to college and even at home, i cant do anything and im exhausted every single day. Has it brought you closer, do you think . This sort of pain solidarity . Yes, because we understand each other. I have really good friends and i can speak to them and say im really struggling today but no one really understands like someone who is going through it, just like you can understand how much pain i am in right now but my friends dont. They dont have to live like this. The same number of people have the condition in this country as type 2 diabetes and we know next to nothing and how to treat it. Its seen to be embarrassing to talk about it. I didnt think id ever come on National Television and talk about my bowels, but, hey i did it with you its heartbreaking to have spoken to victoria and jessica about essentially living this joint life in agony but it really reinforces to me how important it is that if you recognise any of these symptoms, that you go to the gp and get a referral to a specialist, that you fight for treatment and for a better existence. Im joined by emma cox, the ceo of the charity endometriosis. Watching the report there, do you feel this is resonant with the experience of a lot of people you are talking to . Absolutely. The bbc research is a wake up call to show the public and government exactly what it is like living with endometriosis. We are hearing exactly the same things. Emma spoke to victoria and jessica who were talking about their symptoms. Run us through for viewers who might be watching, as we are hearing, the subject is often taboo, so even just voicing it is helpful. Run through for people watching the symptoms they should be alert to if they think there is the possibility they may have this. Endometriosis does affect people differently. So if you have one or more of the following symptoms then it is worth checking with a gp. Chronic pelvic pain, painful periods, painful sex, problem is going to the toilet, bladder and bowel problems. Problems with fertility and fatigue, those are the main symptoms. The difficulty with some of the symptoms as they can relate to other conditions. So are you confident now that given a growing awareness, taking it out of the shadows and making it less taboo, that its also helping gps to help women identify and treat endometriosis . Absolutely. We hear from gps and treat endometriosis . Absolutely. We hearfrom gps that and treat endometriosis . Absolutely. We hear from gps that people come to them and dont know what to explain and dont know the terminology, so all the awareness is really helpful with that. We have been working with the Royal College of gps on the menstrual well being toolkit and on e learning with gps to help support them. We are urging people to go to theirgp as them. We are urging people to go to their gp as well and for too long people think its in their head or they are just a bit soft and they dont realise they actually have a problem. What if they do go to their gps, they may feel, whats the point, because the gp willjust send them home with a painkiller. Not necessarily. There are a couple of treatments for endometriosis. The gp will want to do investigations because it doesnt overlap with the conditions was up endometriosis diagnosis is done by surgery and they will rule out other things first. Different treatments include hormone treatment. If you stop the body having periods then it can manage the treatment. You could be put on the contraceptive pill or a medical menopause. There are specialist centres that deal with endometriosis and getting somebody toa endometriosis and getting somebody to a centre so they can check with more detail, they have more time than a more detail, they have more time thana gp, more detail, they have more time than a gp, so they can diagnose to see if you need surgery. What about the actual finding of the reasons why it happens, dealing with the problem at source rather than dealing with symptoms . We heard msa ina dealing with symptoms . We heard msa in a report that as many people suffer as with type two diabetes and yet. And no research compared to it, a drop in the ocean. We dont know what causes endometriosis and until then we cant find a cure and we cant prevent it either. And it will not as simple as not adopt there is likely to be some hereditary impact, as we just saw a mother and daughter. But we need some proper investment in research to study people before they get the disease to find out what causes it. Good luck with your campaign. Thank you. The Royal College of psychiatrists says its a useful resource but warns it doesnt address the needs of patients with more severe Mental Illnesses and with one in ten psychiatric posts unfilled, it says theres an urgency to meet the needs of the most vulnerable. It is important to look after your Mental Health and it is about the health of your mind. These are the early signs that things are perhaps not as healthy as they could be. Since last monday we have been taking a closer look at each of the nominated buildings. Today its the turn of the cork house, named so because it is constructed entirely from blocks of cork and timber that slot together without any mortar or glue ofany kind. The whole project is carbon negative and has very low whole life carbon. All the components can be reused or recycled, and its been made entirely from by products and waste from forestry and the cork stopper industry. This house is very unusual because it is made nearly entirely of cork blocks placed one on top of the other by hand. There is no glue. What holds them together is an interlocking tongue and groove profile and gravity. Its very interesting from a life cycle point of view. At the end of a buildings life, if its put together in a new way, its completely biodegradable. Six years ago matthew came to me with the idea came to me with the idea of building a house out of cork. We identified it as being able to play all the roles that a building envelope needs to. Thats external walls and roof. It can potentially act structurally, to give enclosure, to give thermal insulation and weather tightness. Its always interesting as an architect when you design your own house the materials you choose and the way they are put together. Youre actually designing your experience of that house. But we have been talking to House Builders about the possibility of maybe some type of system so we can roll it out for market use. That there are lots of barriers to entry. It is quite a conservative market, the British Housing market, for good reason. And there is a lot of money involved. So to bring a new construction system to market is very difficult, a lengthy thing to do. We would probably need an industry partner to collaborate with in that respect. We heard that about the sustainability of cork as a Construction Material and this idea of whole life carbon, where you take into account how much it costs to get the material is organised to build the home and also their sustainability and position. Until those costs are built into the cost benefit analysis of construction generally, i suppose it becomes difficult for a project like yours to be economical. Yes, thats an extremely important point that you have just raised. It is something i feel very strongly needs to be regulated by government. Because as you say, why is a petrochemical piece of ventilation cheap at the moment a banner cork insulation board, for example, when environmental cost of one is just not factored in . We cannot compare between typical construction and the cork house. In terms of whole life cost, it is different to capital up front cost. Capital up front cost has a lot of short term thinking in it. Buildings do have an end of life, most buildings. At that point if you put it together in a certain way, you design it for ease of assembly and disassembly, at the end of life you have got a very valuable set of products that you can actually sell on. That is never factored into the cost of the house in the beginning and as a society we really need to start thinking about these questions. It is interesting when you start to thinkjoining up the dots. You probably didnt hear our previous guest from the National Housing federation talking about the need for the government to invest in social housing on a very significant scale at this point. Do you get frustrated or do you get hopeful that you could convince the industry to really take on board these ideas about using Sustainable Materials for large scale social investment . Well, i think there is momentum at the moment in terms of the Climate Crisis really coming to the top of the agenda, but things have got to move much faster and further really to address this. And at the moment there has been a huge emphasis on operational carbon, which is getting down our heating bills, which is very important for council housing, the running costs for people, so that insulated glass, more renewables, better airtightness. That is important but on the flip side, embodied carbon, so what we are building our houses from and how they are put together, that had a huge environmental cost to it also.
