Champions Manchester City fall eight points behind in the title race after suffering a shock home defeat against wolves. Good evening. The parents of teenage boy harry dunn who was killed in a Road Accident have made an emotional appeal for an American Woman to return to the uk to face justice. The woman, whos the wife of an american diplomat, was driving a car which collided with the i9 year olds motorbike in august. She told police she would remain in the uk, then returned to the united states, and is claiming diplomatic immunity. The police have said they want to arrest and question her over the incident. Duncan kennedy has been speaking to harry dunns parents. The death of harry dunn has created a profound sense of parental loss. Tim and charlotte say their pain is deep. We cannot grieve for him at the minute because we are just unaware of where we are going. Harry died here when his motorbike was hit by a car. The car was driven by the wife of an american diplomat. But she has now left the country, something harrys parents cant come to terms with. From mum to mum, knowing or believing that she is a mother, i i wouldnt want to think that she put herself on that plane to go home to avoid what shes done. Because i couldnt live with myself. If you could meet her, what would you say to this woman, this mother . Come back we are not out to get her put behind bars. If that is what the Justice System ends up doing, then we cant stop that, but we are not out to do that. We are out to try and get some peace for ourselves. The family hope to meet the foreign secretary to see if the British Government can pressure the americans to finally act for this family. Duncan kennedy, bbc news. Tens of thousands of demonstrators have been on the streets of hong kong, in a day of violent clashes thats led to scores of arrests. Protestors defied a new law banning them from wearing face masks and aimed at ending the unrest thats gripped hong sincejune. Rupert Wingfield Hayes reports. At what point does a protest movement become a rebellion . Today in hong kong, it felt close to that stage. It is now illegal here to cover your face in public, but look at these people, determined they will not be stopped from protesting or wearing masks. If carrie lam and her government were hoping the new regulation banning the wearing of masks was going to stop people coming out on the streets, they have been proved wrong. Even in this pouring rain, tens of thousands have come out again today. Many of them are wearing masks. It is a sign ofjust how little credibility and authority carrie lam and her government now have here. Many protesters are now scared. They fear what is coming, and say they cannot give up. Look at them. They are very young, and they are fighting for us. It is really for the whole of hong kong. And i think we should really stand up and help, honestly. I know that maybe it is useless. After two hours, the police decided this illegal show of defiance had gone on long enough. The police are down behind this wall here inside the police station. They have started firing volleys of tear gas over the wall through these trees, and down into the streets. The tear gas barrage intensifies, and the protesters fall back in a chaotic retreat. The race is now on to get into the back streets before the police can catch them. But many are too slow, and the police overrun them. Among those arrested are two young women. They look like teenagers. As the police finally withdraw, the crowd cheers in victory. For now at least, the streets again belong to the people. Victoria hui is from hong kong, and an associate professor of Political Science at notre dame university. Thank you for being with us. More violent scenes on the streets of hong kong over the weekend. Does the ban on the wearing of facemasks, and the refusal to comply with that ban, does it mark a serious escalation in events there . Yes, definitely, we have actually seen very rapidly progressing escalation over the last few months. And the last one was on 0ctober one when an 18 year old teenager was shot in the chest. Fortu nately, teenager was shot in the chest. Fortunately, the bullet went through between his heart on his lungs, so he can be saved. Then at this government imposed the ban on masks. And first of all, the police will not issue a permit for protest. Now we cannot even wear face masks. So they are defending the last threat of their freedoms. Carrie lam, the chief executive, says the ban has come into effect because protesters are destroying hong kong. She says they cannot be allowed to continue. She does have a point, they are having an impact, there has been a lot of violence had a lot of destruction of buildings, subway stations. Yes, anyway, that is true, but at the same time, we are seeing a lot of provocation by the police. Also, burning stuff inside the station, and then also we are seeing videos of Police Officers throwing molotov cocktails. So really, it is ha rd to molotov cocktails. So really, it is hard to know which side is doing what, but you are quite right, if the police are instigating violence, they do so for a point. Do they really wa nt they do so for a point. Do they really want to get the protesters to get more violent to justify the masked man. And probably they are also going to cancel the upcoming District Council elections in november. It is a bit of a chicken and egg situation. What should beijing do now to try and resolve this . Even very probeijing Business Leaders say they have to formally withdraw the bill, which carrie lam did. But at the same time, because people are reacting to the police illegitimate use of force and increasing police brutality, he hitting people with battens on the heads and breaking bones at the moment of arrest. So these are all terrible things that may be the government actually should not add oil to the fire. At the same time, may protesters can also learn that they need to appeal to International Attention and support, so they have to think and pass the spontaneous reaction to police abuse, it has to also be channelled in a different way. The Police Obviously so they are responding to events and are not instigating abuse of the protesters. But they are getting a lot of International Attention, the media around the world are talking about this, showing the pictures. What do you think the International Community should do, if anything, in response, or is this an issue for china . China has been saying this is all internalfears, china . China has been saying this is all internal fears, except that hong kong is an international city. Hong kong is an international city. Hong kong enjoys a special status because chinese leaders in the 1980 shortly world that hong kong is to be different, and this is why the us in 1992 enacted the Hong Kong Policy act. And as such, this has now been reviewed and a lot of hong kong people are lobbying the us congress to pass the hong kong human rights and democracy act. And at the same time, hong kong people understand that the rest of the world supports them, not just because that the rest of the world supports them, notjust because it always makes the front page when that is violence, but also the rest of the world is standing with them. At the same time, they have to demonstrate and exercise some restraint. And use other methods. 0k, victoria hui, interesting to get your analysis. Thank you forjoining us on bbc news. And well find out how this story and many others are covered in tomorrows front pages at 10. 30 and 11. 30 this evening in the papers our guestsjoining me tonight are the broadcaster lynn faulds wood, and the independents deputy political editor, rob merrick. The Prime Minister has urged the European Union to, in his words, grasp the opportunity offered by his brexit proposals. Talks are due to resume tomorrow, but the eu summit at which any deal would be approved is now only 11 days away. 0ur Political Correspondent iain watson reports. Deal or no deal . This is a week when that question may finally be answered. Boris johnson is pushing brussels to open serious negotiations on his latest proposals. And government ministers are warning time is short. We have set out very serious proposals, including compromise on our side, and we now need to see creativity and flexibility on the eu side in order to reach that deal. Under Boris Johnsons plan, after brexit, the Northern Ireland assembly could decide whether to remain more in step with some eu rules to ease cross border trade, or adopt any new uk rules instead. Critics say this would give too much power to Northern Irelands dup, and the government seems open to a rethink. But i am told that will be no major modifications to the Prime Ministers plan. And in a phone call today, french president Emmanuel Macron told borisjohnson the eu would evaluate whether a deal was possible by the end of the week. The Prime Minister has a much better chance of getting a deal with brussels if he can convince eu leaders that he can get it through parliament. But borisjohnson does not have a majority at westminster, so he would need at least some help from labour mps. And the Party Leadership are demanding that he makes much bigger compromises than he is currently contemplating if he wants labour support. He has got to move, he has got to compromise in the national and International Interest if he is going to get our support. But what happens if borisjohnson does not get a deal . Ministers have already been discussing how to disrupt eu business if he is forced into seeking a brexit extension that he does not want. However, some european leaders are insisting the uk can still leave on good terms. It certainly is possible, but it depends upon one crucial element, that also mrjohnson as well as the eu are willing and ready to move on a compromise manner. If the offer from the uk turns out to be a sort of take it or leave it, its going to be very difficult. The eu will tell Boris Johnson within days whether a deal is possible, and whether he will have to fight with his opponents at westminster to leave without one. The former conservative cabinet minister Stephen Dorrell has joined the liberal democrats. Mr dorrell, who served as Health Secretary injohn majors government, left the conservatives to join change uk earlier this year. Writing in the times, he said liberal conservatives and social democrats should break cover from their respective parties and join the liberal democrats in a big tent. A second whistleblower has emerged in the controversy about President Trumps conversations with his ukranian counterpart. Mr trump has already been accused of asking the ukranians to dig for dirt on his rivaljoe biden. There are also reports that us secretary of state mike pompeo has not yet come into compliance with a subpoena for documents in the impeachment investigation. Lets speak to the bbcs Chris Buckler in washington. The second whistle blower is a Us Intelligence official who apparently had first hand knowledge of this controversial conversation that took place between President Trump and the president of ukraine. You might remember that President Trump asked president zelensky to launch an investigation into joe biden president zelensky to launch an investigation intojoe biden and his son hunter, who had business dealings in the country. But beyond that, we do not know an awful lot about the whistle blower. Although it is important to say that at this stage, we understand that he has spoken to the inspector general, who act as a watchdog for the Intelligence Committee in the us. And of course, what is good to be very important is not with the whistle blower is, but exactly what they have to say. Tell us more about secretary of state mike pompeo, and the reports he is not complying with a subpoena. What is he being asked for . Democrats are pushing for a whole range of different information as part of the impeachment enquiries. The democrats believe that already they have information against President Trump because they have the transcript showing that he asked for an investigation. They say that that shows he was asking a Foreign Government to interfere in a us election, which they say is illegal and impeachable. President trumps counterargument is that that is farfrom trumps counterargument is that that is far from the case. He was asking foran into is far from the case. He was asking for an into corruption, which is his right as the us president , but must be said that he has offered no evidence of wrongdoing by Eitherjoe Biden or his son, and continues to make unsubstantiated allegations. In fa ct, make unsubstantiated allegations. In fact, he has done so very recently on twitter. At the same time, democrats believe that is more there. And as a result, they are asking the white house and the state department for lots of documents, never should some subpoenas. At the heart of this is a real attempt to get anything to show there was pressure put on ukraine. They haveissued pressure put on ukraine. They have issued some subpoenas. There is a suggestion that President Trump has offered Volodymyr Zelensky a visit to the white house. That is all strongly denied by the white house, but democrats want to see documents around any discussions, and up to this point, they say they have been stonewalled by mike pompeo at the state department, and the city have also been stonewalled by the white house. But they are determined and are aggressively pursuing these documents, which could well set up a legal battle even before there is a vote about potential impeachment of donald trump. 0k, chris, thank you. And it is all that is happening all the time. This is why it is never the same. Born in south london, he started out playing jazz. And there were many bands of the years, because. He was not a lwa ys the years, because. He was not always easy company. The director who made a documentary about his life ended up with a broken nose. Nevertheless, his work with african artists at his studio in lagos, his melding of jazz and artists at his studio in lagos, his melding ofjazz and rock, he was a pioneer. It was a turbulent life, but behind the drums, he was one of the greats. Ginger baker, who has died at the age of 80. And fellow drummer ringo starr says, god bless ginger baker, incredible musician, wild and inventive drummer. Peace and love to his family. We can speak now to chris welch, music journalist and former assistant editor at melody maker. He knew ginger baker personally. What was he like . Ginger was a great personality, a very powerful personality, a very powerful personality combo somebody whose company you did not want to get on the wrong side of him. I knew him since about 1964, when i first interviewed him for a melody maker, and he always appreciated the fact that i understood what he was trying to do with the drum kit, sticky professional interest in his plane. Wheels got on very well, write to the end. I last saw him about a year ago. But over the years, he went through lots of different changes. The could be a quite mild ginger baker, surprisingly, he was not a lwa ys baker, surprisingly, he was not always in a terrible page and really well, but that side of them did not appear often. He seemed to clash with a lot of his bandmates over the yea rs. With a lot of his bandmates over the years. Why do you think that was, artistic differences . He had an explosive temperament, that is true, and everything he wanted to do. He was a great fan of things like cycling. When he first started out asa cycling. When he first started out as a teenager, he was into cycle racing. And that developed his skill and energy and stamina for playing the drums, funnily enough. So all things he wanted to do in life, whether its painting, cycling, playing polo, or drumming, he attacked it all with a tremendous energy, which is admirable, really, but it meant that people around him had to put up with his temperament. He really put the role of drummer on the map, before they were kind of behind the scenes, certainly at the back of the stage, but he changed all that. Yes, ginger very much did that. He came up in the jazz scene. But the jazz scene was too pedestrian for him, really. You had to turn up in a suit, read the arrangements, and keep time in the background. But the way ginger played, he wanted to be part of the music. That was what was special about his drumming, particular lay in cream with jack bruce and eric cla pton. In cream with jack bruce and eric clapton. His drumming was an integral part of the cream sound. What made him so unique in your view, after you interviewed so many musicians over the world, what made him so special . He never compromised, i think that is the thing. A lot of people do compromise, he was not prepared to step aside. You shout an argument as promoters, other musicians, but as long as he got things done the way he wanted it done. He would shout and argue with promoters and physicians. But he was rather like with the who, he had his own concept of playing and stuck with it all the way through. Rather like keith moon with the who. If you wanted to baker, you would not get a drum machine. What is his legacy, will he be remembered by younger artists today . I think it was quite a big influence, quite an inspiration. You did not have to copy the way he played, just be the attitude, the fa ct played, just be the attitude, the fact that he stood up for drummers, anyway. Too often, they were regarded as just the timekeeper in the background. Ginger even said that that was the role of the drama, and certainly it is, but you also have to have a personality, and your own sound of your own style, and he had all of that. Role of the drummer. Good to get your memories of what ginger baker was legacy person and what he did for music, thank you, chris. Now time for a look at the weather. Some very wet weather across parts of the uk.
