Hello, this is bbc news. We will be taking a look at tomorrow mornings papers in a moment. First the headlines borisjohnson will submit his plans for a brexit deal to brussels tomorrow, but he says there will have to be customs checks on the island of ireland. The duchess of sussex sues the mail on sunday. Prince harry says he wont see his wife victimised by the press as his mother was. Even the Emergency Services struggle as torrential rain sweeps across large parts of england and wales. Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are daily mirror columnist Susie Boniface and Katherine Forster from the sunday times. Many of tomorrows front pages are already in. We begin with the telegraph, which shows borisjohnson rolling up his sleeves to tomorrow deliver a brexit offer which will keep Northern Ireland in a special relationship with europe until 2025. The metro also leads on brexit, saying the pm will make his brexit deal offer to brussels in the morning, saying take it or leave it. Again, the guardians front page says borisjohnson will threaten the eu accept my final brexit offer or its no deal. The i leads on the news that mrjohnson will urge brussels to keep brexit talks secret. While the front page of the sun shows an exclusive interview with the pm in which he says he has just ten days to crack a deal with the eu. Meanwhile, the times front page has more on prince harrys attack on the tabloid press, accusing it of waging a Ruthless Campaign against his wife. And the Financial Times talks of chinas birthday celebrations being overshadowed by demonstrations in hong kong, in which a protestor was shot for the first time. So that is how the front pages look. Lots of boris johnson, so that is how the front pages look. Lots of borisjohnson, of course. The Daily Telegraph shows a picture of borisjohnson rolling his sleeves up, ready to take on brussels tomorrow. Then maybe some of his party faithful, then other mp5, and the rest of parliament, and then, we dont know, maybe the country as well. Yes, he has his work cutout. He has his arm out, and the nonrecyclable mug with his face on it and we finally find out what the cunning plan is to get us out of this mess, which is not one border, but two orders. So a regulatory border down the irish sea, and then a border check, not a border, but checks, away from the border on the island of ireland. So what it will effectively mean is that britain and Northern Ireland will all leave the customs union, but Northern Ireland will remain largely within the european Single Market until 2025, at which point the Northern Irish assembly, if it is sitting, would have a choice. Are we all writing this down . They will be questions later. Well done, you have summed it up later. Well done, you have summed it up pretty well. Is this going to fly . I mean, iam not convinced. Sorry to be a doomster and gloomster. Big businesses will be able to hire somebody, but we have been speaking to smaller businesses and they are worried. But it is not just that. When it comes to Northern Ireland and the republic, it is not just about customs, it is notjust about trade, it is not about free passage across that border, it is about the good friday agreement. Exactly, and one of the good friday agreement negotiators has said the point of that is that it allows people regardless of that border in Northern Ireland to identify as british or irish according to their political beliefs. And if you have any of this stuff at the border you may well be changing those peoples ability to feel that they are british or irish, and that is what reopens the troubles, never mind the fa ct reopens the troubles, never mind the fact that all of this stuff here thatis fact that all of this stuff here that is suggested is against an eu redline. It is stuff they have already ruled out. What youve got here isa already ruled out. What youve got here is a bunch of newspapers, all over the front pages, take it or leave it it says everywhere. Deal or iio leave it it says everywhere. Deal or no deal. If you dont do this anymore we are leaving without a deal and there is no more negotiation, thats it, flat and final. He cannot do that. The law of this country says he cannot do that. They say if there is no room by the 17th of october, thats it, we off. 19 october, unless he chooses to resign and collapse the government, he has to ask for an extension. Position he is taking, parliament, and people who want or dont want brexit and have different views on what brexit is, cant lock it. He is positioning himself as a man of the people. He is saying whatever is not this is blocking it. But this is the biggest block there is. There are promises that have been made that shouldnt have been, he hasnt said that, but is he alluding to the fact that, but is he alluding to the fact that people in government have made lots of promises that they shouldnt have made in the reality is this is what brexit looks like, this is how we do it. Interestingly, the reporter who wrote about this has been tweeting about the story and he has said i cannot for the life of me see how this would fly with the eu. And you are dying to say something. Sea is like a goldfish with her mouth open sorry. I dont think this is going to happen. I think there is a lot a lot of positioning going on because they are trying to be seen to be saying we have made a lot of effort, 70 days of negotiations, we have made every effort and given the you an offer, a revised offer. If this doesnt work, dont blame us. But of course, the eu have got really no incentive, have they, to make this work. Because they know that we are not leaving on 3 october with no deal, because the benn act has seen to that. They are saying why wont we have another extension . We might have another extension . We might have another extension . We might have a softer brexit, we might have a second referendum, we might not leave. But i think there is a real problem because the people were asked a question, they gave an answer, which was to leave, Parliament Said they would respect that, 3. 5 years later we have not left. And borisjohnson says, you know, if we dont leave, there will be grave consequences for trust in democracy, and i think thats right. I dont think theres any Good Solutions now, but theres problems whichever way it goes. Lets have a look at the daily express, because, you know, papers like the daily express like to look at the personality of the Prime Minister and how he is doing all of this. Like benny hill. It is a slightly benny howell. I think it was just a moment of that photo. The pms take it or leave it brexit deal to the eu. But it is not a joke, is it . It is no laughing matter. And he has his speech tomorrow, and it is going to be interesting to watch the reaction to his speech here live on bbc news tomorrow. Well, hopefully its a better reaction than some of the other speeches we have had a conservative conference. I dont go to conferences. I did go to the labour one for a brief period and it was in quite a big room, there was fairly regular rounds of applause, and the conservative conference appears to be in a much smaller place. And some of the speeches are going down about as well as a prostate exam. There is very low levels of care, i think, among the grassroots. I think they can see that. We are missing inspiring speeches in politics at the moment. Whether you agree with their policies or not, there are really good public talkers and there are not good. Well, Boris Johnsons big selling point was supposed to be that he is a good orator, and he is funny, he is great. He has always seemed to be on the back foot, he has been heckled, he has not wanted to face hecklers in luxembourg. He doesnt seem to be fulfilling the promise that he had at the start of august, at all. But, 0k, it seems to have been a trail of unmitigated disasters. Literally everything seems to have gone wrong for him since parliament came back. But if you look at the poles, he is still ahead. He is less popular than theresa may. He is way ahead of jeremy corbyn. In the end, there is going to be a choice, which is which is it going to be . Jeremy corbyn borisjohnson . Is it going to be . Jeremy Corbyn Boris Johnson . Is not the choice. But there will be an election. Boris johnson . Is not the choice. But there will be an electionlj think but there will be an election. think he is going to collapse the government when he cant leave. Sorry to interrupt, susie, i mean, people do vote for personality and not just policy. Do people do vote for personality and notjust policy. Do you think, in this current climate, though, what this current climate, though, what this election is about is about brexit. It is totally about brexit. 0r brexit. It is totally about brexit. Or will it be partly personality as well, and who you like . Two they will try to make it about personality, and about boris as opposed to boris johnson. Personality, and about boris as opposed to borisjohnson. The problem we have, since theresa may was up againstjeremy corbyn maybe a year ago, all Party Leaders popularity has dipped over time. Nigel farage had a big spike around the eu elections. There is one party leader who is more popular now than they were at the time, and that is they were at the time, and that is the lib dems, swinson. Jeremy corbyns popularity has gone down in the past year. You cant call the election. It is a mess. It is perfectly likely we might have another hung parliament. perfectly likely we might have another hung parliament. I think it is really dangerous to predict politics now, actually. Yes, we should have learned by now. Theresa may learnt that lesson, because she was up in the polls when she called a general election. But she fought that trying to make it a brexit election, and it wasnt, because i think people thought the brexit was in the bag at that point. I think this will be the brexit election and the fact thatjeremy corbyn is still sitting on the fence, still basically not taking a position, i think will definitely harm them. Because i think it will largely fall along leave remain lines. We cannot move along leave remain lines. We cannot m ove o nto along leave remain lines. We cannot move onto anything until brexit is delivered or resolved in some way. But no matter what happens, we have yea rs of but no matter what happens, we have years of this. Susie is right, without doubt there is an election, but we have already heard election pledges. The conservative Party Conference already feels like an election campaign, and tomorrow, it is safe to say, i am not the bbcs political correspondent, but it is safe to say were going to hear an election from boris johnson. They are not really interested in presenting a brexit deal which is actually winnable or going to fly with anybody. That is not what he says, but lets see what happens. It is not 30 october. Lets see what happens. 19 october. Can we move on from brexit while there are people still watching . The guardian. You have to admit, shocking scenes from hong kong stop shocking notjust because they are violence, but shocking because they continue every week, for such a long time now, in a country that has zero tolerance of anybody protesting, even just one person. Yes, it has been going on a long time and today a shot was fired ata long time and today a shot was fired at a protest. A year or two ago, this would have been almost unimaginable, what were seeing now. But this on day that hong kong is. China is celebrating 70 years of communist rule, but we have these terrible scenes in hong kong. And, you know, i dont know how this will be resolved, but it is. you know, i dont know how this will be resolved, but it is. I am more shocked by the fact it has taken the chinese authorities four months to get to the point where they are shooting people. Ithought get to the point where they are shooting people. I thought they would have done it sooner, to be honest, judging by their previous history. But also, despite the fact that there are a hardcore of protesters going out and having very clashes with the police, there are still massive numbers of peaceful demonstrators during daylight hours, children, parents taking their children, parents taking their children and grandparents out on the streets, we saw earlier on today. So the fact there are violent clashes later on is not putting off the moderates, the central part of this protest movement. And there are a lot of protests in hong kong, but its not the whole of hong kong that is affected. So life is kind of going on in other areas. But, you know, it is just the resilience of these protesters, it is not going away. I think it is just different times. You were saying i am surprised it has taken them this long to shoot someone. It is different times. The world is watching all the time. They dont need to shoot, they have facial recognition cameras, they can go back later. It will be interesting to see how it plays out, and there are to see how it plays out, and there a re calls to see how it plays out, and there are calls for restraint from all over the world, so it is notjust the media watching. It is also other governments as well. The Financial Times. Is this the death of the high street, or is this just problems ahead . A story about wages. Two the John Lewis Partnership will run its divisions together in order to save £100 million a year. It seems to make perfect sense to me. Is that effective management or a sign they are in trouble . They are getting rid of 75 Senior Management positions and they are the ones which never go in cost cutting drives, they always cut at the bottom. I think they probably know what they are doing. Will it affect our Shopping Experience . Well, i dont really shop very much in either of those, sadly, so it wont affect me. But i think certainly the high street is changing and it is incredibly difficult now for them to compete, places with physical premises. These are big names on the high street, debenhams, john lewis, dhs. Are big names on the high street, debenhams, john lewis, dhs. But they have overheads that these Online Companies just dont have an Online Companies just dont have an Online Companies just dont have an Online Companies are so slick now. Amazon now can bring your groceries, and it is very hard. Of course, if john lewis. You know, these shops are disappearing. Dont you like to lie ina are disappearing. Dont you like to lie in a bed before you buy it . I like to look at a wardrobe, i like to see it before i buy it. They are two of those high street brands that have done well in the changes to the high street. They have maintained quality, which debenhams didnt, they went on a race to the bottom and that is they lost out on customers. And things like click and collect, they are smart with that. They have kept up with the changes on the high street and they have a decent future ahead of them, unlike some of the others. And here, the royal story. Looking at the times now. Its a huge chunk of the front page. Furious prince hits out at bullying of meghan, and he compared the bullying of his wife to the treatment of his mother. And we all remember what happened to his mother, diana. And we all remember him walking behind her coffin when he was a little boy. Its very poignant and he was saying basically there was a letter published, a letter that meghan was my father had sent and then a letter that she had sent and then a letter that she had sent to him. But harry is saying there has been constant viciousness and criticism and getting at meghan, the wedding was perfect, a fairytale wedding, it was perfect. But since then the press have been increasingly. Less and less favourable. She was given a hard time. Its obviously very difficult and that has been extensively ad. And then we had the christening and there was a lot of criticism because they would in say who the godparents were, 2. 4 million on frogmore cottage. So certainly she has been given a very hard time and it must be very difficult for someone coming into the royal family. Be very difficult for someone coming into the royalfamily. A be very difficult for someone coming into the royal family. A level of exposure that people elsewhere in the world dont get, or attention. Im in reading, reading their state m e nts im in reading, reading their statements are night, its not about the scrutiny, we know that comes with what we do, we know that is our place in the world. It is the fairness. And thats why hes using the word bullying and propaganda. Specifies about the positive cove rage of specifies about the positive coverage of their tour of south africa, and he talks specifically about the double standards, the rule correspondence, those who are there on this tour, he seems to be criticising them personally, vilified almost daily for the past nine months, theyve been able to create lie after lie her expense. So it seems that there are people hes got in his size who hear things are responsible for this. But the times are saying this appears to have been made personally, this statement, without the help of his aides. There are people saying in this story that the queen would not have known about this, and it is overshadowing the positive news of their tour. Our rule correspondence as the queen was aware. rule correspondence as the queen was aware. Royal correspondent. This has got to be a last resort, nobody wa nts has got to be a last resort, nobody wants litigation. The newspaper is going to argue it out for a bit. I think they are entirely right to say she has had far more criticism than is reasonable or just. She has had far more criticism than is reasonable orjust. For example, the renovation of frogmore cottage, taxpayers money, i dont doubt some of that was because security want this or harry wants that, all of that expense was given as meghans fold. Is made clear he has made it quite clear, hes not challenging freedom of the press, but this was a campaign, that is what theyve called it was not a campaign to vilify her, using words like propaganda and bullying, and an invasion of the sea is their allegation as well. Words Like Campaign implied there is one grand overarching conspiracy amongst all editors to do this. But thats not the case. If the newspapers are depressing you tonight, weve got some good news, there will be sausage rolls after brexit. Stockpiling sausage rolls for brexit. Are you happy with that . My family consume a lot of these. Some of my consume and consume children consume three or four. Good to see a little joy in our worries about the world. Stockpiling the ingredients for greggs sausage rolls. Im not sure about the bigger ones. I cant believe post brexit we will be in thing greggs. A bit of a worry. will be in thing greggs. A bit of a worry. We will be eating. I dont wa nt to worry. We will be eating. I dont want to have severe greggs sausage rolls. To eat. Want to have severe greggs sausage rolls. To eat. It was an absolute pleasure. Thank you for that and thank you for behaving yourselves almost, susie. Thats it for the papers tonight. Thank you to you for watching. And dont forget you can see the front pages online on the bbc news website, its all there seven days a week, bbc news. We offer a sausage roll, lets see if we can find one in the canteen. Off for we can find one in the canteen. Offfora. Good evening. We start with a heavy defeat for tottenham in the Champions League tonight. They were thrashed by german champions Bayern Munich 7 2 at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. Manchester city won confortable at home to dinamo zagreb. Joe wilson was watching. Empty that was tottenham at full time. Against a club with five european cups, they had just conceded seven goals. Seven. Strange thing is, spurs actually took the lead and it looked good for them, after 11 minutes. Sadly, the lead barely lasted three minutes. Could kimmich score from there . Well, yes. Well, if you allow players to shoot, they will score, especially if they are one of the outstanding finishers. Perfect from robert lewandowski. Now look who led the game, now look who fell apart. The second half began with Bayern Munich scoring almost at will. Three quickly became four. Tottenhams manager looked at the floor. What was left in the game . Well, a harry kane penalty. 4 2, if you had lost count. Spurs were, remember, Champions League finalists. What are they now . Serge gnabry, former arsenal player, completed his hat trick. Lewandowski helped himself to another. By now it was just torture. Tottenhams ambitions and status shattered by a single scoreline. 72. Oh, my word manchester city, in contrast, were serene. 2 0 winners against dinamo zagreb, even if the referee decided to book their manager. Cheer up, pep. Have you heard the score from spurs . Joe wilson, bbc news. Sir mo farahs former coach, alberto salazar, has been banned from the sport for four years, thats for doping violations that include the trafficking or attempted trafficking of testosterone. Farah has always denied any wrongdoing and in a Statement Today says he has no tolerance for anyone who breaks the rules. Salazar says hes shocked and will appeal. A doctor, jeffrey brown, who worked alongside salazar has also been banned. Farah, spent six years working under salazar at the nike oregon project before leaving in 2017. Athletes have to have complete and total trust in their coaches, and if they dont the relationship will fray, and when a coach is accused of something, an athlete has to ask really detailed, tough questions. I was in a great coaching relationship with my father but if those questions were being asked of him i would have absolutely wanted to know what the background was if he was working with other athletes. And you have to assume that athletes do that if they are challenged in that way and they make judgments accordingly. That news about alberto salazar, of course, comes as the world athletics championships continue in doha. 0n the track this evening, britains adam gemili just missed out on a medal in the mens 200 metres final. Ameircan noah lyles won the race in 19. 83 seconds. He was the clear pre event favourite after running the fourth fastest time in history earlier in the season. There was another hugely imperssive performance from britains dina asher smith. She looked very comfortable indeed in winning her semifinal of the 200 metres. She will now be one of the big favourites for tomorrow nights final. Johnny sexton will captain ireland for the first time in their Rugby World Cup pool match against russia on thursday. The returning fly half is one of 11 changes to the side that lost to the hosts japan on saturday. Irelands fate is still in their own hands, theyll be sure of a quarterfinal place if they record bonus point wins against russia and samoa in theirfinal game. Thats all the sport for now. Good morning. Weve all had ourfair share of rain, havent we, just recently . Im sure youre well aware of the flooding rains but we have had through the north of england. But they have gradually drifted their way south east over the last few hours and we are seeing a slow improvement. So the sharp, thundery downpours easing as well in the south east, and they will continue to clear. By dawn, temperatures are going to be the talking point, not the rain. And in fact, with the northerly wind kicking in, temperatures filed away quite sharply, so were going to be greeted with some blue tones, temperate as close to freezing in places. So yes, a touch of frost first thing this morning, it is going to be chilly compared to late. So we start off on that chilly note but it will be a dry one with some lovely spells of sunshine coming through, probably the best day in terms of drier, sunny weather. At the same time, down to the south west we could pick up a bit more fair weather cloud. Those temperatures struggling after that chilly start, 11 15 degrees the high, where the weather should be for the early half of october. Some blue tones but if we look out to the atlantic, this circulation here, the wind is coming from more of a southerly direction. Within this significant area of low pressure is an area of tropical moisture, some warmth set to return. You are probably aware this has the remnants of ex hurricane lorenzo, and this is going to track to the west ireland and bring some rough seas and high tides. That moves in, and ahead of it we will see the cloud thickening and the winds strengthening to gale force gusts. This should be some brighter weather, but more sunshine coming to from time to time. Temperatures of similar values thursday to wednesday, highs of similar values thursday to wednesday, highs of 11 16 degrees. But it is low pressure that is going to track its way steadily eased words in south during that thursday into friday, which will introduce slightly milder hour, but it will bring a smell of wet and windy weather before that system slowly sta rts weather before that system slowly starts to ease as it pushes south. Take care. Welcome to newsday. Im mariko 0i in hong kong. The headlines violence here escalates. A teenager becomes the first protester shot by police in four months of unrest. He is among dozens in hospital. Here come the riot police. Here come the water cannon. They are about to start clearing this street. This is only one of at least six different protests taking place here. Meanwhile, in beijing, china celebrates 70 years of communist rule. Xijinping says nothing can stop its onward march. Im kasia madera in london. Also in the programme borisjohnson says he will make his brexit proposals public
