China is hosting enormously lavish events to mark october 1st, the 70th anniversary of the founding of the peoples republic of china. The communist leadership has organised a huge military parade in beijing, and is hoping the big day isnt overshadowed by demonstrations in hong kong. Live now to beijing our correspondent robin brant is there. What you can probably see what you can policy now is a long shot. That is why the consequences of the industrial progress. Over the last seven decades, since its founding in 1949. I keep picking down to the left. The only one amongst the senior leaders. The most Senior Leadership here in china. He is now 93. This is the beginning of the parade. Taking part, about 600 pieces of military equipment on display. About 160 aircraft flying over. The military on the run up to today, have said they dont want this to be seen as a show of force, china flexing its muscles. There might be some scepticism about that. It does want the world to see this parade the military hardware, stop that increasingly made here. Most of all, it wants the world to see china proudly celebrating seven decades. Obviously there is concern about events in hong kong. Nobody there in beijing wants that to overshadow whats going on in beijing. Xi jinping and the others around him wouldnt have wanted this celebration to be taking place in that context. Civil disobedience on the streets, nonetheless that has happened. It has continued up until last week. Perhaps it will continue. A controversial extradition bill, to allow some suspects. Many have concerns, it now gotten a lot bigger. Its got to be a protest thatis bigger. Its got to be a protest that is centred on suffrage, on democracy and much broader concerns about hong kongs future as part of china. I think the message from xi jinping, and we expect a brief speech from him in a few minutes time, is going to be about unity, strength and unity. There may be talk as well of an ongoing struggle. That narrative remains very important for chinas marxist leaders. Also as well, repeated justification for Chinese Communist pa rtys justification for Chinese Communist partys authoritarian justification for Chinese Communist pa rtys authoritarian dominance justification for Chinese Communist partys authoritarian dominance here in china and that is because they say this country is vast in size, faster number, disparate in its nature and what it needs at its core, what its always needed, xi jinping will say, is strong leadership. Stay with us. Lets talk to Natasha Kassam in sydney, china expert at the Lowy Institute and former australian diplomat in beijing. Thank you for staying with us. You area thank you for staying with us. You are a former australian diplomat in beijing. We were saying earlier that i think there is a speech earlier this month, whether chinese president used the chinese word for struggle, one of the chinese words the struggle. Something like 50 times. This is a challenging time. It absolutely is a challenging time for china. Partick early as the economy is under strain. There are a range of internal and external pressures being placed. Xijinping is using the opportunity of the anniversary to really engage with what i think is the strongest ideology. If i could paint a quick picture. The streets around the avenue whether military parade is alternate way. If they wanted to be watching the bbc, their screens would be back right now. Also to project a role china says. Elsewhere in the world. Would you say is behind the communist Party Success in china . The partys success in china is described by Chinese People, in particular terms. You often hear people say that we stood up often hear people say that we stood up under chairman mao. People who have bought into this idea now they are standing up. This is a way to consolidate all those views, the weather should be viewed by both the chinese party. We have a translation i think. Out chinese men and women, a few will do it. Semi good wishes to our great motherland. On behalf of the central committee. The National Peoples congress, the Central Military commission. Let me express. The well being Central Military commission. Let me express. The well being of the people. All across the bow of the globe. Let me also extend sincere gratitude. Friends of all nations. They support chinas development. It was today, 70 years ago, that chairman mao stood at this very place. And announced solemnly to the world the founding of the peoples republic of china. It marks the end of more than 100 years of humiliation and misery. The country had suffered since modern times. The Chinese People managed to stand up oii Chinese People managed to stand up on their feet and be in a grand journey of national rejuvenation. The chinese have been united with one people. There is no force. Shape the foundation. They can stop the Chinese People. Forging ahead, nothing can stop the Chinese People. 0r nothing can stop the Chinese People. Orthe nothing can stop the Chinese People. Or the chinese nation. Comrades, friends. Forging ahead we will remain committed to the leadership of the communist party of china. The socialist passed with chinese characteristics. Comprehensively follow through the basic theoretical s, guidelines and strategies. Meet peoples aspirations. We must remain committed to the strategy of peaceful rectification of one country, two systems. We will maintain long term prosperity. Hong kong and macau. Advance Peaceful Development of cross trade relations. Unite the whole country and continue to strive for. Forging ahead. We must remain committed to the past and Peaceful Development. Upon the open strategy of cooperation. Continue tojoin hands with all the pupils in the world to build a community of future. The Peoples Liberation army of china and police force, will forever retain the purposes and nature of being the peoples military. It will resolutely safeguard the sovereignty and interest of the nation and resolutely protect world peace. Comrades, friends, china yesterday is already engraved in the history of mankind. China today is created by hundreds of millions of hard working chinese by hundreds of millions of ha rd working chinese and by hundreds of millions of hard working chinese and china tomorrow will be even more prosperous. The party, the army and the people of all ethnic groups must be more firmly united, remain true to our original aspiration and keep oui to our original aspiration and keep our mission firmly in mind. We must continue to consolidate and develop this peoples republic and continue oui this peoples republic and continue our struggle to achieve the two goals and to realise the chinese dream of national rejuvenation. Long live the great peoples republic of china. Long live the Great Communist Party of china. Long live the great Chinese People. Another military review starts. Im your positions. Live there from beijing. President xijinping are live there from beijing. President xi jinping are delivering live there from beijing. President xijinping are delivering a live there from beijing. President xi jinping are delivering a speech to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the peoples republic of china, standing in the same spot where on the first of october 1919, chairman mao ushered in the new commonest rule, declaring that the Chinese People had stood up. A corresponded are in beijing, what m essa 9 es corresponded are in beijing, what messages are you picking up from that . Lets look first at your comment about xi jinping, what he was wearing, the only person among the Senior Leadership on the stage they are wearing that attire very similarto they are wearing that attire very similar to what chairman mao always appeared in, standing in exactly the same place, by chairman mao announced the formation of the peoples republic in 1919. He didnt have to be hugely observant but you didnt have to be hugely observant did you to notice that xi jinping, a man whojust two observant did you to notice that xi jinping, a man who just two years ago brought about the end of term limits for the president in the country, was perhaps trying to evoke the image of the man who founded modern china 70 years ago. The exhortation that came at the end of that brief speech was about the people of china, the party that controlled china for 70 years, there was talk as well of unity and that would struggle a tribute discussing some ten minutes ago, before, so important for the marxist narrative, it was in there at the end, wasnt it . The struggle continues. He talked about increased prosperity, remember this is a country which now has the second biggest economy in the world, and aspires to be richer, under that ongoing communist leadership. Now we get a military parade and today, is centred on a military event. There were civilians ta ke military event. There were civilians take part in other events, a lot of people are watching but the centrepiece is a military event. We are going to see soldiers, were going to the weapons, hardware, planes and china wants that to be the centre of the attention today. The military leadership coming into this has so they dont want to be perceived by others, particularly americans i think is china flexing its muscles but this a show of force. Make no mistake, china wants the world to be looking in and seeing how capable it believes it 110w seeing how capable it believes it now is. Robin, as people look at these pictures, we ought to, just let people know in case you havent reached the conclusion themselves, theirforeign leaders reached the conclusion themselves, their foreign leaders invited. Reached the conclusion themselves, theirforeign leaders invited. All those attending i had picked so no risk of demonstrators or indeed any cheering brand in public along the room. No, a lot of cheering lots of clapping, but all pretty much on cue. This event is going to be very well attended in terms of people along the sidelines, i was down a couple of hours ago near the main thoroughfare here in beijing which ta kes you thoroughfare here in beijing which takes you to gentleman square in the centre of the city. Some people are massing, it was very tight security, a lwa ys massing, it was very tight security, always the way here, thousands and thousands of people in the square but they are invited guests. There are no foreign leaders, no foreign dignitaries here. There are the cohort of foreign ambassadors, i saw the British Ambassador heading early today, is important now that the protocol if nothing else but this is essentially for domestic consumption. This is an event to a china brother marks seven decades of communist control of the peoples republic of china and its very, very heavily choreographed. Much preparation has gone into this and the main audience for this is the domestic audience, the tendons in fa ct domestic audience, the tendons in fact the hundreds of millions of people who will watch this now but also watch tonight on the main evening news. Robin as he was saying, we are told officially this is not meant to be a military demonstration but there will be a colossal amount of hardware on show. It is interesting, always interesting of course, to analysts what china chooses to show. There are reports militaries like stu reveal the longest internat Intercontinental Nuclear missile . Thats right, a new icbm which we we re thats right, a new icbm which we were told very heavily trailed, sounds its trailed strange to be trailing a nuclear missile, heavily trailed, the new icbm which can reach further, potentially into the United States. It may well be a missile that can deliver a Nuclear Warhead that has the longest range in the world. Perhaps as well, some hypersonic aviation hardware which we have been told may appear, peacekeeping troops as well. Thats important. Thats not just peacekeeping troops as well. Thats important. Thats notjust focus on the high tech weaponry but focus on the high tech weaponry but focus on the fact that china wants domestic audiences and the world to see chinese peacekeepers. It believes it has a role to play in a more Peaceful World and is more committed to the united nations. Is also part ofa to the united nations. Is also part of a narrative Going Forward about chinas commitment to multilateral well. At the moment is one of its big criticisms, donald trump in particular is that the us believes it is pulling back from multilateralism and china is trying to fill that gap. But now you see xi jinping standing on the most famous car, the limousine whose carried all the leaders, you can see xijinping, he is reviewing the navy, the army, the air force and he will be followed by all that harder, all the people. One final thing, followed by all that harder, all the people. One finalthing, notjust the present in this country, his most important job as the present in this country, his most importantjob as a general secretary of the communist party of china, secondly the chairman of the military commission, that is essentially the role hes feeling 110w essentially the role hes feeling now is that all shut and share back at him. And thirdly that role as president of the country. Robin, thank you very much, stay with us if you can, i want to bring in again natasha in sydney. Former australian diplomat in beijing, natasha, it came up again there, the chinese word, the several chinese words for struggle and all this at a time when the party is facing a number of challenges, isnt it . Slowing growth, trade will be the us, the concerns about our quality, the consequences of decades of growth and the widescale outbreak of swine flu and of course, the protest and violence in hong kong, we were hearing that a previously planned fireworks display has been cancelled because of the continuing protest there. The party has a lot on its plate. Thats absolutely correct. Actually, weve had i think this morning that they have already been some scuffles in hong kong between the police and protesters. One of the police and protesters. One of the National Day Celebrations has been moved indoors because of concerns about security. The communist party is definitely under pressure from outside and from within. The economic concerns he outlined as well, and i do think the issue of the issues are often being seen as external but as people are sitting down to watch the display on tv, i have no doubt that some Chinese People will be complaining about the fact that in august alone, prices of pork, the most popular project in the country went up by a0 . In these sorts of issues are going to be at the forefront of the chinese leadership s mind moving forward. Forefront of the chinese leadership s mind moving forward. And as robin was saying we tend to assume that china is talking to us with these events, the rest of the world, but actually most of this is sending m essa 9 es actually most of this is sending m essa g es to actually most of this is sending messages to the domestic audience . Thats absolutely right. This parade as much as there are International Signals involved, obviously xi jinping is thinking about foreign policy, thinking about the way this is perceived in the United States and elsewhere in the world, the most important audience for Chinese Communist party messaging is the domestic one. And for that reason there has been ongoing rollouts of displays of patriotism all week in china. They are listening to page writing songs been played over speakers when theyre on the subway, their hearing stories about National Heroes on the airwaves, this is certainly a time for bringing people together, united under the idea of patriotism and nationalism. But at the same time you could listen to the same time you could listen to the speech that xi jinping just delivered where he talks about for example, how all of china and that must be a galling message to hear if you are connected to one of the 1 Million People who are being detained or other minorities who have been prevented from practising their religion. He also said something about reunification with taiwan, and noting that when they say that, they are talking about bringing taiwan back into the prc but that is not true. Taiwan has never actually been part of the peoples republic of china. It was pa rt peoples republic of china. It was part of the republic of china, which predates the first of october 1919. And so, these messages are for i think primarily the people of china, the people of hong kong and the people of taiwan as well. And then of course the International Audience as well. Ive seen in the writings, no describe the key behind the communist Party Success in china are kind of brutal pragmatism, theres more to be said about what happens in the future. We will come back to that, we must leave for a moment these parades in beijing, the 70 yea rs these parades in beijing, the 70 years anniversary of the fields republic, the anniversary celebrations very much under way with this massive military parade, but this 100,000 people, and hundred and 60 planes, 100 to make hundreds of more pieces of military hardware on show expected to include supersonic drones, missiles and tanks. Possibly the was longest range Intercontinental Nuclear missile. Thank you very much watching. More to come. Hello again. The average height of a uk two Story Building is around seven metres high. Imagine then just if you can for a moment, waves that are three times that height at around 22 metres high, thats the kind of size of waves we are looking at generated by this hurricane, hurricane lorenzo, with its 105 mile an hour sustained winds. Lorenzo is tracking in a north easterly direction, and those 20 metre high waves are what we could see battering the western azores as we go through tuesday night as that hurricane passes very close by. After that it turns into a normal area of low pressure and will end up probably close to the British Isles but there is some uncertainty exactly where it ends up. Our main focus in the uk however, is on the continuing flooding threat across england and wales after the recent very heavy rain that we have seen and the extra rain we have got that will fall throuh the rest of the day today. Weve got rain with us already for Northern England and Northern Ireland, heavy showers packing in across wales and South West England, something a bit drier in scotland but is also a bit colder and there are still a few showers around as well, its just that theyre not as angry. Through the rest of tuesday, what will happen is these heavy showers and thunderstorms across wales and South West England will have, to start off the day, theyll tend to push eastward with time across the midlands into east anglia and south east england. These showers, well they could bring around 30 a0 millimetres of rain in just the space of a few hours, so given the ground is completely saturated, that rain could cause some localised surface water flooding problems and some quite nasty conditions out on the roads. Apart from those heavy downpours though, it is relatively mild in the south with temperatures up to 19 degrees, but notice the green colours for Northern England, Northern Ireland and scotland as the air continues to get colder. Yes, there will be sun, and a few showers for northern scotland. Now, overnight the rain clears away from england and wales, so it will become drier, showers will feed in across northern scotland. But for many of us, its going to be really quite a cold night. Heading into the early part of wednesday morning, those temperatures will be well down into single figures, and indeed in some places in the countryside, there will be a few pockets of frost. Heading into wednesday, weve got northerly winds, they will be pushing the colder air right the way southwards reaching southern parts of england and wales, but at least its going to be a dry day and that will allow some of those floodwaters to slowly ebb away. Not entirely dry though, there will be some showers for northern scotland and one or two sneaking down to affect the eastern coast of england, the north sea coast, really. A cooler feeling day, temperatures in london at around 1a degrees. Thats your latest weather. 00 29 33,644 2147483051 51 31,536 long live the Great Communist Party 2147483051 51 31,536 4294966103 13 29,430 of china
