President trump is under growing pressure as the impeachment inquiry puts two of his key aides under the spotlight. His personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, has been ordered to hand over to congressional committees all documents relating to his work foertrump in ukraine. And its been revealed that last week the president asked the australian Prime Minister to cooperate with an investigation, led by attorney general william barr, aimed at discrediting the mueller report. Last week, evidence emerged from a whistleblower of concerns among white house officials that mr trump tried to pressure ukraines leader to interfere in next years us election. In response, mr trump has suggested, without offering any evidence, that one of the senior democrats investigating him could be arrested for treason. I made a call, the call was perfect. When the whistleblower reported it, he made it sound terrible and then you had adam schiff who even worse, made up my words, which i think is just horrible, ive never even seen a thing like that. That is the assertion from the president. Live now to our north america correspondent peter bowes. There is a lot going on, tell us more. There is a lot going on, tell us more. Sabina to Rudy Giuliani, the president s personal lawyer who really is at the centre of this political firestorm, a subpoena to provide documents, copies of texts, emails, any kind of evidence that is involved in his communications, his contact with ukraine. He has acknowledged that contact, all in relation to that telephone call where the president asked the ukrainian president for assistance in investigating joe biden. Rudy giuliani really at the centre of all of that, he gave several interviews over the weekend and also implied that other people within the Trump Administration were involved and said that he had these records and i think thats in part prompted the congressional investigators, the democrats to ask for that evidence going back 2. 5 years so a lot of documentation is being asked to produce and he has until the middle of october to produce it. Peter, politically the democrats are up against it. Any impeachment proceedings have to go through a two thirds majority in Republican Controlled Senate but the president is making increasingly erratic allegations. I suppose part of the hope with the democrats is he gets more erratic, it might make theirjob slightly easier. Well, yes. That is one possibility. You could say this is typical behaviour from donald trump, that he always comes out fighting and he is certainly fighting in this case. Another thing that he is asking for is the identity of his accuser, the whistleblower. At the moment, we dont know who that person is. They are likely to give evidence to testify before congress in the coming days or weeks but the president is saying that he wants to know who that person is. Its raised questions about the safety of the person, security regarding any potential appearance which is likely to ta ke potential appearance which is likely to take place behind closed doors. Peter, thank you very much. China is hosting enormously lavish events to mark october ist, the 70th anniversary of the founding of the peoples republic of china. The communist leadership has organised a huge military parade in beijing, and is hoping the big day isnt overshadowed by demonstrations in hong kong. This from our correspondent Rupert Wingfield hayes. On monday in beijing, the whole of Chinas Communist Party leadership turned out to remember the millions who died in the long struggle to establish what they call new china. This was the moment of victory i october 1949. Today, china has stood up, chairman mao declared. The country he took over had been ravaged by decades of conflict. When i first crossed over from hong kong into Mainland China down there, 30 years ago, on the other side, shenzhen was just a dusty little border town. Now look at it a gleaming city of 12 Million People. Chinas transformation has been astonishing, and its people are rightly proud of that achievement. But outside the mainland, chinas new wealth and power is causing deep unease, even fear, nowhere more so than here in hong kong. Forfour months now, the streets of hong have boiled with rage. The young protesters do not trust the communist party. They scoff at president xis promise that he will maintain hong kongs autonomy for 50 years. David and his mother, anne, sit on opposite sides of this increasingly bitter divide. They always say that, no changes in 50 years, until 2047. But we find that the days of 2047 have come now. They had 200 years to build a better usa, but china only got 70 years. If better china, therefore better hong kong. Better china, better hong kong. David is among those now calling on the United States to impose sanctions on china. Why are all the people supporting america in the trade war . Because we want that Chinas Communist Party has falling power because of that. Such talk makes hong kongs small band of super patriots extremely angry. They say fear of china is a product of british brainwashing. Translation hong kong was ruled by britain for over 150 years. They did not teach us respect for our chinese roots, but encouraged us to have anti china and anti communist beliefs. On tuesday, chinas most powerful leader since mao will review a military now second in strength only to the United States. It is a sight that will make many chinese hearts swell with pride. But its neighbours look on with growing concern about how china will use its new found power. Rupert wingfield hayes, bbc news, in hong kong. Heres the bbcs robin brant in beijing on what we can expect today. Well, this is as close as we can get to the route of the parade at the moment. Changan avenue is where the tanks will roll, where the troops will march. It is going to be quite a spectacle heading down that road in an hours time. They will be 50,000 members of the military, theres going to be 600 pieces of equipment on show, about 160 aircraft going over. The military, leading into this, have said they dont want it to be seen by the world as a show of force. But this is a chance for china to show, and there will be eagle eyes particularly, i think, looking at some of that new equipment that chinas leadership has chosen to display. Now, there are some challenges going forward, though, as xijinping, the president , leads these celebrations. And it is a celebration 70 years since the communists came to power, 70 years of huge progress, as well, in this country. It is still a bit smoggy here. China is still dealing with the consequences of decades of industrial progress. The economy here is also slowing in terms of its growth. And of course, there is also that trade war with the United States. Little sign of progress there. In fact, an escalation is just a few weeks away. And domestically, big problems in terms of pork. China eats more pigs than anyone else, and this country is being ravished by african swine flu, and theres not much they can do about it. But this is going to be a moment of national pride. Its a moment of celebration. Were going to have a huge military parade. There is propaganda already up across the city, of course. One over there talks about harmony and democracy. But there are further messages for the people, to remind them of what this day is all about. The message from xijinping, who will kick things off with a short speech, will be about struggling. Thats very much in line with the marxist narrative, but very much about strength of unity, as well. The communist message constantly is that this disparate country of 1. 4 billion people needs a strong leadership at its core, and xi jinping will say that remains him, that remains his communist party. We will get more live in just a few moments from a china expert, a former australian diplomat in beijing. British government sources have told the bbc the legal text of an updated suggested brexit deal has been prepared, and Prime Minister borisjohnson is expected to make those plans public in the next 2 3 days. But it is said to include the possibility of creating customs posts in so called clearance zones some distance from the border between Northern Ireland and the republic. Heres our europe editor katya adler. The leak tonight s yacht yet an official position but a suggestion and it has been made by the government and it would see customs infrastructure on the island of ireland, not exactly on the border but set back five or ten miles. Checks on goods as well and gps tracking systems on traders as well. What the eu has said to date is, you wa nt to what the eu has said to date is, you want to be in the backstop, that is fine, borisjohnson, want to be in the backstop, that is fine, Boris Johnson, as want to be in the backstop, that is fine, borisjohnson, as long as you come up with an alternative that meets our main criteria, respecting the single market, number one and number two, safeguarding the Northern Ireland peace process. The eu, this means no customs infrastructure, not on the border or near the border. It means no checks at all. Ive spoken to the European Commission tonight. The bbc has spoken to the irish government. Their response is is that this is not an official uk position yet so they cant officially comment on it but were these custom posts to become the official uk position it would be dismissed and rejected by the eu as insufficient. One of the most renowned operatic sopranos of the 20th century, jessye norman, has died in new york. She was 7a. She sang in church from the age of four and made her opera debut in wagners tannhauser in 1969, with a voice described as sumptuous and shimmering. She was the soloist at events including the bicentenary of the french revolution, bill clintons second inauguration, and the unveiling in new york of two monumental columns of light, six months after the 9 11 attacks. Stay with us on bbc news. Still to come the bbc has reversed a decision to partially uphold a complaint against the breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty following a wave of criticism. In all russias turmoil, it has never quite come to this. President yeltsin said the day would decide the nations destiny. The nightmare that so many people had feared for so long is playing out its final act here. Russians are killing russians in front of a grandstand audience. It was his humility which produced affection from catholics throughout the world. But his departure is a tragedy for the catholic church. This man, israels right winger, ariel sharon, visited the religious compound and that started the trouble. In berlin, a million germans celebrate the rebirth of europes biggest and richest nation. This is bbc news, the latest headlines Donald Trumps personal lawyer is ordered to handover documents on ukraine as the president calls for the democratic congressman leading the impeachment inquiry to be arrested for treason. China is celebrating 70 years since the communist party came to power. Lets talk to Natasha Kassam in sydney, china expert at the Lowy Institute and former australian diplomat in beijing. Good australian diplomat in beijing. To talk to you, thani much good to talk to you, thank you very much for your time. What is the point of the celebrations and the massive parade today . A are we expecting to see . I think we have to remember that the celebrations are very much aimed at a domestic audience. These are to boost the eyes of the Chinese People in the eyes of the Chinese People in the eyes of the Chinese People that they are taking their raffle place in the world. We will see thousands of military marching, we will see incredible displays of both conventional and from what we hear, nuclear weapons, there has been a pleasure to campaigns all through the country, including stories about National Heroes on the airwaves and paid your deck playing on the subway. Even the opening of the new beijing airport was touted as this great picture of dick achievement because only under the coverjust make Chinese Communist party could but have been built in five years. So really have to see this as being aimed at the domestic audience and thatis aimed at the domestic audience and that is who will be watching this most closely today. At a very challenging time, isnt it . Analysts pointed out the speech, the president uses the chinese word for struggle, Something Like 50 times . Thats absolutely right. We do need to be careful, there are two different words for struggle. That they use in china, one means closer to strive and one wins closer to more struggle in the kind of marxist sense. Absolutely a challenging time for china, it has quite significant economic constraints, the natural slowing of the economy, worries about dad as well as the impact of the trades over the United States. And that is absolutely happening having an impact on people. Multiple external pressures as well, so of course the protest in hong kong which i think our kind of getting more quiet overtime, but are still a really significant issue for beijing to deal with. The fact of the matter is, the protest in hong kong have ca ptu red is, the protest in hong kong have captured the eyes of the world and i do not think that beijing is winning the Public Opinion wanders on. Given all that, do you have a view on how the Current System has survived for so the Current System has survived for so long . And what the future is for the communist party of china . Look, i think this is very challenging because of course i think that the system has survived through magnetism, it essentially, packages and, essentially. It has survived because it has been flexible. Chinese leaders have studied for many years the demise of the soviet union and they do look at many of the failings of that time and consider how to adjust their policies in that sense. I think the system has the benefit of being a much larger economy, so the soviet union s economy was never large enough nor dynamic enough to truly compete with the United States. That is obviously a different situation for china. But then also they have i think, amounted much more significant levels of control over social and political discourse and in that way they can control narratives and survive in a much more kind of stable way and present a much more stable option to many Chinese People. But on the other hand, ido Chinese People. But on the other hand, i do think that there are many sources of discontent, economic mismanagement is one of them but people also concerned about the elimination of limits for the chairman of the party and the president of the country, so it is going to be challenging given forward , going to be challenging given forward, china has achieved many things in the last 70 years, but it has had some terrible periods as well. They like to talk about for example, having lifted 800 Million People out of poverty but i would say in many cases those people were held back by historical injustices such as the great leap forward and when they were given the opportunity, they then pulled themselves out of poverty. China has achieved many things but it has come achieved many things but it has come a at great cost of Political Freedom and to many individual people and moving forward i would think that balance is going to get more difficult for the ccp to strike. The island of madagascar is the Worlds Largest producer of vanilla beans and this booming industry has also meant a sharp growth in vanilla bean theft. Its treated as a special crime adults can to be imprisoned for up to 5. 5 years without trial, children for nearly 3 years. And those accused are likely to spend a long time in prison before trial. Theres particular concern about conditions for child prisoners. The bbcs Southern Africa reporter Pumza Fihlani has gained access to one of the main prisons in the sava region. The squalor is extreme and unrelenting. The innocence of childhood is overwhelmed by it. But 180 children are held here in conditions so crowded there is hardly room to lie down. Their mattresses, bare concrete. This boy is one of them. He was just 13 when he was imprisoned over three years ago. He is a quiet child with a gentle manner, resigned to his fate. He says prison has destroyed his life. What is the hardest thing for you about being here . Like most of the children here, he is accused of stealing vanilla. But he maintains he is innocent. Antalaha prison was built for 280 people. The children here live side by side with over 2000 adults against international standards. Many dont know what a lawyer does, let alone their right to one. We meet another boy, 16 years old. He is also accused of stealing vanilla. Hes been in prison for nine months and told me many of his friends had to defend themselves in court. There are about 100 children here who have not seen a lawyer, not even had a trial and many of them dont even know when they will be going to court. And how many of you have had access to a lawyer . Just five . Madagascars Justice System allows for a long detention periods. For children held her it means living under these harsh conditions even before theyve been found guilty of a crime. The Justice Ministry says it has no other option. As a human being, how do you feel when you see these prisoners . We showed the conditions of the prison to a human rights lawyer. He believes vanilla theft should be treated as a petty, not serious crime. The priority of this land is much more on vanilla than human beings. Has the Justice System failed the children of madagascar . Yes, clearly. It is very sad. Madagascar is a country clinging to its vanilla industry at all costs and these children are paying the price. Pumza fihlani, bbc news, antalaha, madagascar. The bbcs director general has reversed a decision to partially uphold a complaint against the bbc breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty. The complaint related to her reaction to comments by President Trump. The corporations complaints unit found last week that she had breached editorial guidelines. Over 100 mps wrote to lord hall to protest against the ruling and now lord hall said hed reviewed the decision, as David Sillito reports. Breakfast news, and an unscripted exchange that made headline news. Absolutely furious, and i can imagine that lots of people in this country will be feeling absolutely furious that a man in that position feels its ok to skirt the lines with using language like that. The topic donald trump telling politicians, all women of color to go back to where they came from. And as our guest was saying there, its an absolutely, it feels like a thought out strategy to strengthen his position. And its not enough to do it just to get attention. This exchange provoked a complaint about the two presenters. The process ended with a decision that Naga Manchetty had strayed beyond the bbcs editorial guidelines. Describing a remark as racist is not the issue at stake here. The issue at stake is whether its right to go on to ascribe motive, in this case to President Trump, could have been to anybody else. The concern about that argument was how far was it actuallyjust accepting that racism was part of acceptable political debate. Many within the bbc were said to be on easy, uncomfortable, and in the wider world, well today, more than 100 mps signed a letter expressing their concern. All of which led to the director general today reviewing and reversing that decision, saying, these are often finely balanced and difficult judgments, but in this instance, i dont think nagas words were sufficient to merit a partial uphold of the complaint around the comment she made. The average height of a uk two Story Building is around seven metres high. Imagine then just if you can for a moment, waves that are three times that height at around 22 metres high, thats the kind of size of waves we are looking at generated by this hurricane, hurricane lorenzo, with its 105 mile an hour sustained winds. Lorenzo is tracking in a north easterly direction, most 20 metre high waves are what we could see battering the western azores as we go through tuesday night as the hurricane passes very close by. After that it turns into a normal area of low pressure and will end up close to the British Isles but there is some uncertainty as to where it ends up. The main focus in the uk is on the continuing flooding threat across england and wales after the recent heavy rain that we have seen and the extra rain we have got that will fall to the rest of the day today. We have got rain with us already for Northern England and Northern Ireland, heavy showers packing in across wales and South West England, something a bit drier in scotland but also a bit colder and some showers around as well, they are just not as angry. Through the rest of tuesday what will happen is these heavy showers and thunderstorms across wales and South West England will have the start of the day, they wanted to push eastward with time across the midlands into east anglia and south east england. The showers could bring around 30 110 millimetres of rain in the space of a few hours, so given the ground is completely saturated, that rain could cause some localised surface water flooding problems and some quite nasty conditions out of the road. Apart from these heavy downpours, it is relatively mild to the south with temperatures up to 90 degrees, but notice the green colours were Northern England, Northern Ireland and scotland as the air continues to get colder. There will be subsided in a few showers for northern scotland copy. Overnight the rain clears away some will become drier, showers will feed in across northern scotland, but for many of us will be really quite a cold night. Heading into the early part of wednesday morning those temperatures will be well down it single figures, and indeed some players in the countryside, they will be pockets of frost. Heading into wednesday, northerly winds, pushing the colder out right away southwards reaching southern parts of england and wales, but at least it will be a dry day and that will allow some of those floodwaters to slowly add away. Not entirely dry, some showers were northern scotland and wanted or two sneaking down the eastern coast of england, a coolerfeeling day, temperatures in london around 1a degrees.
