Police in hong kong have used tear gas and water canon to Disperse Protesters hurling rocks and petrol bombs in Anti Government demonstrations. They were marking five years since the start of what became known as the Umbrella Movement, a campaign for greater democratic freedom under chinese rule. From hong kong, heres our china correspondent, john sudworth. The everyday object that lent its name to a movement was in use again. Five years after it first shielded the protesters from the pepper spray and tear gas. In 2014, the umbrella protests faded away. But this year theyre back with a vengeance in far more violent form. We have no choice. Like, we cant go back. Imean. For me, like. If we lose this time, hong kong cannot survive for more than another five years. The anniversary began calmly enough, with thousands joining a peaceful rally. But this is now a deeply divided society. With those who fear that hong kongs freedoms are being eroded. Pitted against often ugly confrontation against the supporters of chinese rule. This man, beaten for carrying a chinese flag by those who say they are fighting to protect freedom of speech. By the end of the night, the centre of hong kong was a battleground once more. So the protesters are retreating from the water cannon and the pepper spray. Five years ago the Umbrella Movement began on this spot. They gained no political concessions. Thats why these people say their far more militant tactics are justified. The authorities marked the anniversary with a belated promise to look again at electoral reform. The protesters smashed their windows and then disappeared into the night. John sudworth, bbc news, hong kong. The forecast is for a low turnout, in afghanistans president ial election. Tens of thousands of police and soldiers have been protecting polling stations, after warnings of violence from the taliban. So far at least four people have been killed, and 80 others injured, in bomb and mortar attacks. The poll, which had been delayed twice, follows the breakdown of peace talks, between the taliban and the us. Martin patience reports from the capital, kabul. Voting in afghanistan takes courage. This is an election that will be closely scrutinised for fraud. Taliban threats didnt stop these women from turning out, no matter what it took. In a hospital in the city ofjalalabad, these people know the cost of democracy. 36 people here were injured in a blast. Translation i had been queueing up to vote for ten minutes. Then i heard an explosion. The next thing i knew, i was lying on the ground and my legs were wounded. Translation we need security. We call on our next president to deliver security. But a massive security presence wasnt enough to bring people out. Whats striking is the streets of the capital have been quiet all day. Normally theyd be busy with people heading to the polls to elect their next president. But the fear of taliban attacks mean many people have chosen to stay at home. Earlier today, president ashraf ghani cast his vote, saying this election will help move the country forward. And his main challenger, doctor abdullah abdullah, conveyed a similar message. Was todays vote a success . From a Security Point of view, yes. But the taliban threats worked. Voters didnt turn out. Taliban threatened particular, certain objectives for them. They were going to attack the sites, they were going to make targeted attacks in cities. But today, they failed to do it. But if voter turnout is as low as predicted, how much legitimacy will the next afghan president have . Martin patience, bbc news, kabul. The white house has restricted access to transcripts of some of president Donald Trumps calls with foreign leaders. Thats according to us media reports. Officials say notes about calls to leaders including Russias Vladimir Putin and the Saudi Crown Prince have not been handled in the usual way. It comes as an impeachment investigation into President Trump over his administrations dealing with ukraine, is gathering pace. Our north america correspondent, peter bowes has more. Well, the significance is that it really exposes two sides of the story, that according to these reports, the white house for some time now, for several months has been restricting the transcripts of conversations that the president has had with, as you say, World Leaders like president putin, the crown prince of saudi arabia, and essentially keeping that information on a special server with Access Allowed only for a few people in the white house. And the implication is that that was done because it was to stop leaks of conversations of the president was having, there was one he had with malcolm turnbull, the then Prime Minister of australia back in 2017, that was leaked. And so the suggestion is that those calls like this very latest one, this controversial one with the president of ukraine are being kept with tighter security. Of course the other side of the story, and the democrats suspect, that in fact whats happening is that the white house is trying to cover up details of that controversial conversation. Well many have been comparing these impeachment proceedinds to others such as president s clinton and nixon. Leon neyfakh has been doing just that hes also host of the fiasco podcast. Hes in new york. Thank you for your time. First of all that start with the popularity of the proceedings. A lot of people are talking about these impeachment proceedings is not having a lot of support among the public. Was the same for nixon . I think what people who look back on the nixon hearing would say, he really moved Public Opinion very strongly. Nearly the fa ct opinion very strongly. Nearly the fact that the investigation may be done that so he beats everybody. People here every day and they get the full story, people can really become engaged and i think the point of the next enquiry is to get eve ryo ne of the next enquiry is to get everyone to get people to watch the news all the time. We are having a bit of trouble hearing you but thats continue for now, in terms of the charges that nixon faced and what donald trump has accused of, of any similarities there . Between. In terms of the charges between president nixon faced, what the impeachment charges were looking into and the arguments of abuse of power over donald trump, ill be seeing similarities there . Absolutely anything the big thing that this latest scandal had in common with what we saw under nixon was that we have material which was previously secret and was not to be seen previously secret and was not to be seen by anybody. To come might become exposed in the same with the white house tapes under the Nixon Administration became this unknown passion of authentic conversations, here we have a situation where something has come out from behind the shadows was previously, a lot of scandals involved things he said to the public, what he says on nbc, when he said he fired james, because of the russian investigation. He we have something that did not want to come out and he really fought to keep it. Its interesting the notion of something hidden being revealed. Im interested in terms of the similarities here with coverage. And with the media, so only so with president nixon, president clinton, we still had a lot of people been drawn to the traditional audience for prime time use. Theyve got social media, people gather sources from all over the place, does that mean its going to be really different for people to really end up different for people to really end up moving towards supporting these envision proceedings . up moving towards supporting these envision proceedings . I think its a great question, its a big difference between then and now which is that back then, if you are watching television, you were watching television, you were watching one of three news networks. And everyone was broadcasting the hearings and the American Public really became obsessed with them. I think one similarity is that the hearings that go into this impeachment enquiry would also be very easy to watch even though people are more fractured, this was a feeling with as a major public hearing luck with testifying, it is evident that americas watcher, i dont have the to back it up but there is a sense that despite the fractured media environment, the fa ct fractured media environment, the fact that everyone hears them tell them what they already think, theres a way in which proceedings can cut through all that and become the centre of conversation. When there is big news, people still tune in. Thank you so much for your time. As borisjohnson arrives in manchester for the conservative party conference, there is growing speculation that opposition parties at westminster are considering a vote of no confidence in the british Prime Minister. The labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, says a caretaker government is becoming more likely every day. Chris masons report contains some flashing images. Borisjohnson you are not fit. Boris johnson arrived here this evening with his girlfriend, carrie symonds. Are you losing control, Prime Minister . A Prime Minister in office but barely in control defeated in court but defiant. What a week its been. The Prime Ministers advice to her majesty was unlawful. Parliament has not been prorogued. Welcome back to our place of work. Many of us in this place are subject to death threats. Ive never heard so much humbug in all my life. He faces huge questions about the countrys future and his own past. The mayor of london supports you. You like hanging out hang out with us, right . Ido borisjohnson has been referred to the Police Watchdog over a potential criminal offence relating to his relationship with the businesswomen Jennifer Arcuri over allegations she received favourable treatment, including grants and a place on trade trips, when mrjohnson was mayor of london. The Prime Minister denies any wrongdoing. This issue is being politically driven, its politically motivated. And the Prime Minister has been clear that proprieties were observed. All in all, is all of this an open goalfor labour . They hope so. Even if some privately wonder if their leader is match fit. If the government falls, loses a vote of confidence, could Jeremy Corbyn become caretaker Prime Minister . At the moment he doesnt have the numbers. And yet. Its getting more likely every single day because this government is collapsing. It has now lost all seven votes since Boris Johnson became Prime Minister and this tory government has been defeated over 45 times in parliament. They dont have a majority, they dont have a programme, they dont have policies and they dont also have any credibility. The Scottish National party want to be seen to be trying to bring down the government next week and could live with mr corbyn in downing street. The only way to guarantee another brexit delay, they think, and then have a general election. Its only right and proper that he, as the leader of the largest opposition party, should have the first opportunity to form an administration. But if another name appears in the frame, a ken clarke or a dominic grieve, that people can coalesce around, then i personally and i think the snp would have very little difficulty with that. No one but no one knows whats over the horizon right now. But this is a party, despite everything, determined to show the world its best side. The former president of zimbabwe, robert mugabe, has been buried in a simple ceremony in his home village of kutama. Mr mugabes final resting place has been the subject of a dispute between his family and the government since he died earlier this month, aged 95. The Bbcs Shingai Nyoka sent this update. Its a very ordinary ending for an extraordinary political career, a low key Church Service proceeded Robert Mugabes burial here in the tranquil rural village of zvimba. A service attended by family, relatives, neighbours and very few vips and former comrades. Robert mugabe was many things to many people, he was admired for his fiery rhetoric and reviled for human rights abuses as well as ruining a once prosperous country. But very few anticipated this is how it would and for mr mugabe, his burial in a quiet rural village. He was a man who thrived in the spotlight, who revelled in public attention. President mugabe chose to make a political statement. He was totally bitter about his removal. And the message that is coming out is it doesnt matter what you think about his policies, political leaders must not be removed by the military. Some say his decision to be buried here is a political statement. Robert mugabe was an avid chess player and he hated to lose. When he left power in 2017, he did so unwillingly. And when he leaves today, he does so in his own terms, buried in a courtyard, far away from those who betrayed him. Shingai nyoka, zimbabwe. Us sprinter Christian Coleman has won the 100m World Championships gold in doha, just weeks after a controversy over his place in the competition. It makes him the fastest man of the year with a finish time of 9. 76 seconds. The build up to the competition saw the Us Anti Doping Agency charge coleman with missing three drugs tests in 12 months before withdrawing the claim. He gave this reaction after his win. Sad you start with Something Like that. Trying to smear my reputation. And i dont know how the information got out there to the public, but it shouldnt have. But it is what it is, man. Now all ive got to do is keep doing what ive been doing, focus on me, now i am world champion, that is something nobody will ever take from me. Joining me from doha is jonathan goolt. Hes been covering the athletics for letsrun. Com. Thank you for your time and for staying up. Lets talk about the excitement around Christian Coleman. They are thinking may the next usain bolt . That is a level that is thrown around with essentially every top sprinter that has come up after bolt retired in 2017. But coleman is the real deal. He was the silver medallist in 2017, he beat usain bolt in the World Championships, now he is the 100 metre world champion, is a really a top talent. Given he is so young, do you think were going to see more incredible performances from him . |j incredible performances from him . think so. If you look at the raise he ran in the World Championship final, he closed extremely well, he rana final, he closed extremely well, he ran a personal best of 9. 76 seconds. I think there is room for improvement moving forward. In terms of some of the more negative coverage that has been made about these missing drug tests, is there doubt around his performance because about . There is. It depends on who you ask, really, some track fans will say look at gatland or ben johnson 30 years ago, they are sceptical. Coleman has not failed any drugs tests, but when you are not available to drug test is, that produces suspicion among some parties. So there is some doubt within the sport. Given his performance now, do you think there will be pressure on him to make sure he goes above and beyond sticking to all the rules so that doubt is removed . Absolutely. I know he said the reason for his missed tests was due to forgetfulness and a lack of care, essentially. And i think often after this episode he made it through unscathed, he won the World Championships, but he will be paying more attention to filling out his whereabouts forms next season and beyond. More broadly, briefly, about the competition in zohar, weve been hearing about empty stadiums, high temperatures. Was this the right place to hold the competition . think of in terms of, well, probably not. The marathon was very hot, and the 100 metre final, that is usually the 100 metre final, that is usually the brew ribbon event blue ribbon, and if you look at the atmosphere during the final, the prerace interactions, the light show, that was all terrific. But there were so many empty seats in there were so many empty seats in the stands, you didnt see that in london in 2017 or beijing in 2015, certainly not the limbic vinyl. You would like to see more people in seeds for a race like this. Jonathan goolt, good luck covering the rest of the competition. Thank you very much. Hello there. A soggy, blustery night will lead into a wet and windy sunday morning across many parts of the uk. On the satellite picture you can see this swirl of cloud, a developing area of low pressure that has been bringing some very heavy rain, some very strong and gusty winds, and as that low pressure system slides its way across central and southern portions of the uk, through the first part of the day we will see some strong and gusty winds on the southern flank. This little lump of showery rain here could well include some very squally and gusty winds as it slides its way eastwards. Now as we go through the day ahead, parts of the midlands, east anglia, wales, down towards the south coast will see a mix of sunny spells and heavy, thundery showers. Persistent rain will continue to pile in across parts of northern england. Northern ireland and scotland should brighten up with some spells of sunshine and just the odd shower, temperatures of 13 19 degrees. But where this rain lingers for any length of time, well, there certainly is the risk of some travel problems and some localised flooding. Now, as we go into the evening, notice of the light lines squeezing together on the back edge of this low pressure system. A swathe of strong winds blowing across some of these eastern coastal counties, combined with high tides, that could cause some coastal flooding. Now, through the night, one or two showers pushing across the northern half of scotland, clear spells elsewhere and the odd mist patch and temperatures will dip away. Quite a chilly start to monday. But all things considered, a calm start to the day for the majority because of this little bump in the isobars, this ridge of high pressure. But it wont last long. Here comes our next low pressure system swinging its way in off the atlantic. So as we go through the day, well see yet more rain pushing across many parts of england and wales. I think parts of wales particularly as this rain continues to pile up could well have some problems with flooding. The further north you are across the uk, more on the way of dry weather and just the odd shower. Chilly here, though, 10 degrees in aberdeen, london at 17. And then we look ahead to tuesday, that area of low pressure churns its way eastwards, rain mostly for england and wales, some showers blowing into the north of scotland, some sunny spells here as for northern ireland. But those temperatures really dipping away across the northern half of the country, 9 12 degrees. And, as we push that area of low pressure away into the near continent, as we move into wednesday, follow the white lines, follow the isobars up to the north. That is where our air will be coming from. A plunge of chilly air right across the uk for the middle part of the week. So even in the south, temperatures no better than 13 or 1a degrees. And for the end of the week, well, theres the chance we could see more wet and windy weather. This is bbc news, the headlines tear gas and water cannon have been used by police in hong kong in violent clashes with thousands of protesters who gathered to mark the fifth anniversary of a Pro Democracy Campaign known as the Umbrella Movement.
