Over 40 planes, 1000 flights over the period, we estimate at the moment that this will cost roughly twice what the repatriation cost a couple of years ago which is in the order of years ago which is in the order of £50 million so something into the order of £100 million. 200 million to bail out thomas cook to keep going and it will cost half that to just get people home . It is the directors of the company who are responsible for the financing and the ongoing solvency of the business and it is they who have decided to put the company into liquidation and that was given effect this morning. 0ur sole focus is about the repatriation effort and bringing those 150,000 customers back to the uk. The British Government has launched what it says is its biggest repatriation in peacetime history, chartering dozens of flights to bring people home. Lets get more now on our top story, the collapse of thomas cook. Good morning, nice to see you. Many might be asking the question this morning, why didnt the government help them out . It is a big question, looking at the amount of money it is going to cost for the repatriation of 150,000 british citizens coming home. It is a lot more expensive than the £200 million. It is also 9000 jobs in the uk, more than at overseas. Yes. More than that overseas. Yes. More than that overseas. There is a knock on effect, travel companies dont operate in a bubble. This has an effect on, obviously, the hoteliers who are putting these people up for a two week holiday in spain, but also the credit card companies. As you said, the employees of thomas cook, you know, thomas cook also used to operate on the high street. So there are a lot of landlords as well he will be out as a result of this company no longer operating. So it looked yesterday, the conversations from whitehall were that the government didnt recognise the fact that they would find value, almost, in stumping up the money to be able to save £200 million, to be able to save thomas cook, and it was better to let it go to the wall. Dominic raab, the foreign secretary, was grilled about this on bbc news yesterday. His response was very much along the lines of, it is not International Interest for us to bail out thomas cook. And it would set quite a precedent if they did. Some might say, well, they bailed out lloyds and the royal bank of scotland. What is too big to fail . Well, this is the question. The Systemic Risk you get from a bank, for example, i dont think there is a huge amount. 0bviously for example, i dont think there is a huge amount. Obviously there will bejob a huge amount. Obviously there will be job losses, but be confident said to the National Economy as a result of, yes, it is the worlds all travel company, but a bank and the Systemic Risk that can cause, the wave. Systemic risk that can cause, the wave. And Systemic Risk that can cause, the wave. And we must remember then, it was the unprecedented times of the financial crisis, 2008. We know more about how these things operate now. That would have been a huge domino effect. Exactly. We will see you later, we will talk about this more, but also other stories in the news briefing. And now i look at what is happening in sport. But chelsea battled hard and got a deserved goal through ngolo kante, which set up a nervy finish. We have to be ready. We have to be able to do what we are really good in. It was a good game, a really good game. Brilliant moments. But there were obviously a lot of things we can improve upon and that is what we can improve upon and that is what we try to work on in these small periods between the games, when we have time. Flights with thomas cook, desperate search now for alternative flights and accommodation. Good luck to you all. Keep your comments coming and i will see you soon. Hello. A transition to more settled weather right through the weekend. Sunshine on saturday, showers on sunday, but temperatures are still in the high 20s. This was the scene in cornwall as the sun went down on sunday night, and as we start monday morning, a fairly unsettled picture to come through this week, a lot of fairly wet and windy weather and it will be quite a bit cooler than it has been. Monday of course marks the autumn equinox, and although we start the day on a dry note for many areas, we have got this approaching area of low pressure, which brings increasingly wet and windy weather into the south west. So, to start off the day, northern scotland, a little bit cloudy and damp. That rain through the middle of the morning works into the south west of england, then into wales and Northern Ireland. The winds picking up here too. Central and eastern parts of england up towards southern and Central Scotland largely dry here, and in the sunshine, itll be a pleasant day with temperatures up to about 21 degrees, certainly fresher than it has been and its cooler where youre stuck under the cloud and rain in the west. Into monday night now, and overnight into tuesday, were going to see that rain becoming quite heavy and quite persistent, especially across parts of southern england, into wales too, could be some standing water lying around, i think, tuesday morning. Itll be a mild night to come, but quite a wet and a windy one and that means we could see a bit of disruption, i think too, during tuesday. So, weve got that weather front, this ripple on the front bringing that heavy rain gradually eastwards through the day and its particularly across parts of southern england and south wales that all that rain and the gales as well may well lead to a little bit of travel disruption. So, through the day weve got this band of fairly heavy, persistent rain working its way slowly eastwards across england and wales. Thatll be followed by sunny spells and scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms working in from the south west. I think Northern Ireland and north west scotland should stay mostly dry through the day. Temperatures, though, much cooler than they have been, around about 15 to 19 celsius. Lets take a look at some of those wind gusts, were likely to see 30mph inland, along the south coast, a0 to perhaps a5mph gusts of wind, enough to cause a little bit of disruption i think. Some of that heavy rain still lingers around across the south east first thing wednesday. It should clear away and then were in for a day of sunny spells, scattered showers, not as windy on wednesday compared to tuesday. Certainly cooler, though, than it has been, about 16 to 20 degrees, and it remains unsettled and autumnal through the week ahead. Bye for now. This is the Business Briefing. Im sally bundock. Thomas cook, one of the worlds oldest travel firms, collapses, as it fails to reach a rescue deal. And pressure mounts on firms to show they mean businesses when it comes to battling Climate Change a un summit kicks off in new york today. And on the markets. The japan is closed for a public holiday. Negative sentiment in asia. In europe, it will be interesting to see how thomas cook impacts when the day s trade begin later
