Of arnhem, a mass parachute drop takes place in the netherlands to mark what was known as operation Market Garden in world war ii. Hello, and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are the broadcaster and psychotherapist lucy beresford, and john rentoul the chief political commentator at the independent. Many of tomorrows front pages are already in. The sunday telegraph looks at the future of labour and the partys leader Jeremy Corbyn, suggesting that succession plans are well under way. The sunday times says the party has been plunged into fresh chaos, after a Senior Adviser quit he reportedly didnt have faith that labour will succeed. The observer also leads on labour and mentions the partys plans to scrap the schools inspectorate, ofsted. The thoughts of nigel farage dominate the front of the sunday express. He says any delay to the Brexit Process will lead to what he calls a clean break. And the mail on sunday has the story of the 80 year old great grandmother, who was cleared of murdering her dying husband in a botched suicide pact. So, that we are. That gives you a flavour of what is in the papers, but lucy, inevitably the theme seems to be labour turmoil. If we start with the sunday times, they have the headline loser corbyn is rocked as key aid walks out. What is this about . It is interesting, the language. They are talking about a bloodbath here. They are talking about, really, another psychodrama within the labour party. We had one a decade ago with gordon brown and tony blair. Now we seem to have one thatis tony blair. Now we seem to have one that is being played out at the labour party conference. It is not what labour would want. These are not the headlines they would have enjoyed. The key thing is that Andrew Fisher, who was head of policy and also drafted the election ma nifesto policy and also drafted the election manifesto last time around, he has walked out. He has a close ally of Jeremy Corbyn so this is seen as a big loss for him. In fact, in this paper, in the sunday times, it says Jeremy Corbyn was so aggrieved that he went around to see seamus milne, because the idea is that there has been some falling out between the two. But in the whole of this piece we have a lot of information, it is very co nte nt we have a lot of information, it is very content rich, because it is also talking about the opinion polls. Andrew fisher has walked, saying that he doesnt feel they will succeed in the next general election. The polling seems to bear that out. There is one in yougov which is mentioned in the sunday times, and there is also one in opinionum, putting the conservatives at 37 and labour down to 22 . Opinionum, putting the conservatives at 3796 and labour down to 22 . None of this as happy reading, as they going to their conference, which is meant to showcase them at their best. It really isnt. There are serious questions of policy to be discussed in the next few days and instead we have this open civil war. To try to abolish the post of deputy leader was an extraordinary thing, and there are a lot of suggestions as to why that might be, in the papers. Lots of questions aboutjeremy in the papers. Lots of questions about Jeremy Corbyns health and about Jeremy Corbyns health and about his willingness to carry on as leader, which i have always been a bit sceptical about, but clearly something is up, and we are going to learn more, because as lucy said, Andrew Fisher was a very, very important person in corbyns operation. And for him to walk out does suggest something is really awry indo central relationships. And the thought that succession planning has started . Well, that was one of the theories that has been put forward for what happened, or what was mooted last night. What didnt happen. What was maybe meant to happen. What was maybe meant to happen today, but didnt, labour trying to abolish the position of deputy leader. Now, there is an argument to say that maybe they did not so much because they fear tom watson or they disapprove of him, but because they actually suspect Jeremy Corbyn might be on the way out, and if he is on the way out, is that because he is going to resign oi that because he is going to resign or because they are actually worried about his health or about his stamina . About his health or about his stamina . Because there about his health or about his stamina . Because there is actually a very sort of odd line here, which says you would be rationally frightened of a 70 year old man dropping down dead, said an ally. What kind of ally says that about you . But clearly, there are rumours, there are conversations in the bars, in the sort of cubbyholes on brighton hotels, where people are saying, i wonder what is going to happen next . And it comes down, werejumping happen next . And it comes down, were jumping way ahead, happen next . And it comes down, werejumping way ahead, but happen next . And it comes down, were jumping way ahead, but this talk of succession and what happens next, it comes down to this battle for the of the labour party. 0h, yes, clearly. This is all about ensuring that if jeremy yes, clearly. This is all about ensuring that ifJeremy Corbyn should cease to be leader he is succeeded by somebody of the same politics and not, therefore, tom watson. So, i mean, they passed some rule changes earlier today, which leaves the labour party rules, as farasi leaves the labour party rules, as faras i can leaves the labour party rules, as far as i can work out, in a completely contradictory position where if something happens to the leader, the deputy leader automatically becomes acting leader, but subject to approval by the nec. It is not clear, if the nec doesnt like that, whether that will takes precedence. The bigger problem is that distance of model doesnt sit well with the voters, who are looking on, and they are actually hoping for clarity. This sense of muddle. And there is also such a sense of muddle around brexit that people are just thinking, lets get this over and done with, whether it is october 31 or a few months after that. There are so many more important things to be talking about, and what they are seeing at the Party Conferences is internal fighting. We will come to the muddle over brexit in a moment, but first, ditch the queen, say labour voters. Members. If we want an insight, we get it tucked away at the bottom of the sunday times. It actually astonished me to think that there are so many astonished me to think that there are so many people, labour party members, who actually want to get rid of the queen, get rid of the monarchy. I still find that hard to believe. I know there are those of republicans but i never meet them. I just think that everybody is like me and thinks the monarchy is amazing. The most important thing is that one in five people would also feel really embarrassed about singing the national anthem. How can that be . Thats the labour party for you. You think this comes down to the party divide . Remember when Jeremy Corbyn became leader, there was a big fuss about him not singing the national anthem. Whether he knew the lyrics. That is partly why they elected him as leader. Because he is, you know, he is one of them. He is what they regard as really left wing, a proper socialist. Before we leave labour, lets go to your paper, john, independent. Corbyn stitch up blocks labour backing remain. Looking ahead to brexit and want the Party Position is on it. Again, more complicated procedural stuff that happens today, which is that the nec agreed a statement on brexit and under labours rules, if the nec statement is approved by the party conference, then all the emotions that have been put by local parties demanding that the party adopts remain as its official position, all those motions fall. All the motions that have been put. Because the statement by the nec takes residence. And obviously the remain supporters in the party think that isa supporters in the party think that is a stitch up. A keynote speech from Jeremy Corbyn on wednesday, unveiling his radical agenda. Do you think we can expect to see something, a move away from brexit, to say lets talk about Something Else . Absolutely. They tried to do that even today, with don butler talking about what employers could do with women suffering from menopause. do with women suffering from menopause. Dawn. Will he be allowed to get those messages out there . All these parties, to give them credit, have got ideas about what to do beyond brexit, to actually change peoples lives for the better. The question is, are they cutting through . Because of all they cutting through . Because of all the other little psychodrama is going on. Psychodramas. The observer, their main story is labour munching into chaos. A new radical election pledge for education. What is this . Scrapping ofsted. That is a serious policy proposal. I think it is absolutely terrible, and a desperate attempts to appease teachers who, you know, have always beena teachers who, you know, have always been a rather strong Interest Group within the labour party. Teachers obviously dont like School Inspections because they are stressful and difficult, and therefore the labour party is going to promise. There is an irony, that teachers are trying to encourage children to deal with exam stress, and they have to confront things that they dont really enjoy, yet they feel very stressed about ofsted. What would labour replace it with . Thats what were sure about. Apparently local councils, which is sort of going back to the education syste m sort of going back to the Education System that failed us in the past. It would be interesting. We can expect to see a bit more of this kind of thing later in the week when brexit is dealt with. Like thats going to happen. Lets move away. Lets ta ke going to happen. Lets move away. Lets take a deep breath and go to the travel industry now, equally not a very jolly story. The travel industry now, equally not a veryjolly story. Lucy, the sunday telegraph, as well as talking about Jeremy Corbyn, has this story about thomas cook nearing collapse and the fa ct thomas cook nearing collapse and the fact that thomas cook nearing collapse and the fa ct that lots thomas cook nearing collapse and the fact that lots of british holidaymakers are getting a bit anxious. Apparently there are 150,000 people who are either away on holiday or maybe just about to 90, on holiday or maybe just about to go, and certainly lots of people who have already paid a good amount of money for the trip. We are notjust talking holidays, were talking honeymoons, weddings. The collapse of this company, which i fear is really imminent, is leaving those people very uncertain and also people very uncertain and also people who work for the company, people who work for the company, people here in the uk but also overseas. The problem is that £200,000 is an awful lot of money for the company to find when they are already struggling. So the banks have said, yes, we will give you some money, but at the very last minute they have said, can you actually give us a little bit of a cushioning case this happens over the next few months, because of course as you can imagine, for holiday company, you get more money in the summerthan holiday company, you get more money in the summer than you will ever get in the summer than you will ever get in the winter. The problem is that this company has been struggling financially for a long time, over ten years, certainly since 2007 when it bought a Company Called my travel, it has been stuffed full of doubt. And the banks are saying, we cannot bail you out much longer. Stuffed full of debt. There is pressure for the government to step in with the money, do you see that happening . Well, i hope not. It is a dangerous precedent. The company has asked for £200 million but what guarantee is there but that isnt just throwing good money after bad . The irony, of course, is that £200 million is so much less money than it would actually cost to repatriate all these people and to give them all these people and to give them all of their money back for insurance. However, personally, i think it is the precedent it sets. It is wanting to out a bank. Bailing out a travel company, i mean, u nfortu nately, out a travel company, i mean, unfortunately, i think a lot of people who look at thomas cook and think they have not been innovative. If you look at their competitors, who have tried to diversify into other forms of holiday selling, thomas cook have just been lagging behind. Yeah. Good news on this story, we should say, is that there is this operation in the wings, excuse the pun, operation matterhorn is coming together. We keep saying people are going to be stranded, but they are not going to be stranded. Actually, yes, we should be grateful that there are these plans and rules that there are these plans and rules that cover people for going on holiday. So they will actually be brought back home. But it can only happen once all the planes are on the ground. So theyve got to wait for what is called the golden hour, because apparently the rules say you cant announce that a company has gone into administration if one of its planes is in the air. Presumably because it cannot then suddenly arrive at an airport saying, we dont exist. So you can circle for the rest of your life. There we go, we have hit the golden hour where all of our planes have landed safely. Thats it for the papers tonight. Dont forget you can see the front pages online on the bbc news website at bbc. Co. Uk papers and if you miss the programme you can watch it later on bbc iplayer. Thank you, john rentoul and lucy beresford. Next on bbc news its time for the film review.
