Change, have come to a close. From australia to india, europe and the United States, they took to the streets to call for change. Their inspiration is teenage activist Greta Thunberg who told crowds in new york, we will make them hear us. Nick bryant has the story. Dont let our people die Climate Change is not a lie the protests followed the sun. From the low lying Pacific Islands to drought ridden australia, from the streets of south africa to the Brandenburg Gate in berlin. The children of the world, the inheritors of our Climate Change crisis. What do we want . Climate justice when do we want it . Now young voices speaking with passion and urgency, because theirs is the future thats at stake. Considering we have such a short amount of time to turn this issue around, its vital that young people are at the forefront of this conversation because they will be impacted more than anyone else. What the youth can do is talk about the problem and make noise about it and demand it from the people who can create a change. There is no time. Time is up, time is running, and this is our last chance to do something. In westminster, a place more commonly filled with brexit protesters, was thronged of People United in concern for the planet. And there were similar scenes across britain belfast, bristol, birmingham, smaller towns and rural communities. As yet another demonstration took shape in new york, we spoke to the 16 year old activist Greta Thunberg, whos become the insistent voice of this restless generation. Did you ever think it could end up with Something Like this . My dad woke me up today, and he said, its massive, you need to see these pictures. And then i went up, and i just saw these pictures, and i couldnt stop looking, because it was just so overwhelming. And you cannot believe its real. This is not only my voice, this is the voice of millions of people around the world. But i think it is because we are young, and we are the ones who are going to have to live with this in the future. Then she saw for herself on the streets in manhattan the Multiplier Effect of this movement. In this most global of cities, more than a million kids had been given permission to skip class, to make their voices heard. What do we want . Climate justice when do we want it . Now this extraordinary mobilisation really feels like a milestone moment, a day maybe well talk about for decades to come. The question is whether this Climate Change activism will translate into Climate Change action. Youre here marching today. What are you planning to do for the rest of the year . Im going to eat less meat, im going to recycle as much as i can. Im going to everyone around me aware. Im going to do try and do what is best for me as well as best for the earth. It felt like the white house was in a different century today. Donald trump, the president whos taking the United States out of the paris Climate Change accord, welcoming the australian prime minister, scott morrison, a leader who once proudly brandished a piece of coal in his parliament to emphasise the centrality of fossil fuels to his countrys economy. The children are demanding that its time to put the environment first. To some, this will be a confronting reminder of how successive generations of adults have let down the young. But in this planetary day of action, these children can tell their children that they marched. Nick bryant, bbc news, new york. As the protests in new york reached a climax, Greta Thunberg, who you saw in that report, addressed a rally of demonstrators in the city. This is an emergency. Our house is on fire. Cheering. And it is notjust the young peoples house, we all live here. It affects all of us. And we will notjust stand aside and watch, this we are united behind the science, and we will do everything in our power to stop this crisis from getting worse. Even if that means skipping school or work, because this is more important. Cheering. In a rare sign of dissent in egypt, groups of protesters have gathered near Tahrir Square in cairo, to shout Anti Government slogans. They called for president Abdel Fattah Al sisi to go and demanded an end to military rule. Police fired tear gas to disperse them. Our reporter, sally nabil, was there. Area i am standing right now overlooks the square. These people have been chanting and calling on president sisi to go. For years, it has been a no go zone but Anti Government protesters. Police presence is quite heavy in all areas surrounding the square. As you can see, they are saying down with sisi go, sisi, go, that is what they are saying. We have seen Security Forces firing tear gas. We havejust saying. We have seen Security Forces firing tear gas. We have just run away because we have heard that Security Forces are coming. They have been firing tear gas and chasing the protesters, wherever they go. Security presence is quite heavyin they go. Security presence is quite heavy in all areas surrounding the square. But the protesters here seem to be very determined, very persistent. They have been chanting for the past couple of hours and they dont seem to be discouraged by what the Security Forces are doing. So far we what the Security Forces are doing. So farwe do what the Security Forces are doing. So far we do not know how the government and the president are going to respond. Us President Donald Trump has described a whistleblowers accusations that he made a promise to a foreign leader as a political hackjob. Some reports allege that mr trump asked ukraines new president , volodymyr zelensky, to investigate the son of president ial rival joe biden who previously served on the board of a ukrainian gas company. Mr biden is calling on the white house to release the full transcript of the call but speaking earlier on friday President Trump said hed done nothing wrong. I have had conversations with many leaders that were always appropriate. I think scott can tell you that. Always appropriate, at the highest level, always appropriate. And anything i do, i fight for this country. I fight so strongly for this country. Its just another political hackjob. Somebody ought to look intojoe bidens statement, because it was disgraceful, where he talked about billions of dollars that he is not giving to a certain country unless a certain prosecutor is taken off the case. So somebody ought to look into that, but you wouldnt because hes a democrat. I dont know the identity of the whistleblower, but ijust know its a partisan person, meaning they come from another party. But what can say was it was a totally appropriate conversation. Lets get some of the days other news. A bomb attack near the iraqi city of karbala has left at least 12 people dead. Reports say a roadside device hit a passenger bus near a security checkpoint. Many people have been visiting karbala to mark the shia festival of ashura. Brazilian police say they have enough evidence to charge 13 employees of the Mining Company vale and the german consultancy, toov zood, over the collapse of a dam injanuary which killed 300 people. Theyre accused of working with falsified documents that said the dam in southeastern brazil was stable. The struggling travel firm, thomas cook, has approached the government for a bailout. An extra 200 Million Pounds of funding is needed to prevent the company falling into administration, with nine thousands jobs on the line. A collapse could leave 150,000 british holidaymakers stranded abroad. Judith moritz reports. Thomas cook is one of the best known names in travel. At any time, there are up to 100 of its planes in the air, and it has 19 million customers a year, but the operators financial problems have mounted, and news that it faces administration is a real headache for holiday makers. Jacqui cunningham has already cancelled her dream holiday once, after being diagnosed with Breast Cancer two years ago. Now the trip, which she rebooked to celebrate her recovery, is in doubt again. We have booked a holiday to the maldives, and we are due to pay our final balance, which is £8,000, but we dont know, because of the predicament thomas cook are in, whether we do pay the last part or whether we just lose the deposit we have already paid. Thomas cook has been struggling for several years, blaming issues including last summers heatwave and customers uncertainty over brexit. It still has more than 500 shops and employs 9,000 uk staff. But its found it hard to stay in profit. There are 49 thomas cook flights coming and going from here at Manchester Airport alone today, but with the next 2a hours critical to the companys survival, holiday makers are travelling in the knowledge that, if it goes into administration while they are away, they could become stranded and need the governments help to get home. It would be the biggest ever such emergency repatriation effort. Package holidays will also be protected under the atol scheme, and many flights through credit cards or travel insurance. Currently, there are 600,000 thomas cook customers on holiday, of which up to 160,000 are from the uk. The Civil Aviation authority is understood to be on standby to repatriate tourists at a potential cost of £600 million. The British Government said today it stood ready to do everything possible. Tonight its understood that thomas cook has asked for a bailout. Judith moritz, bbc news, manchester. Wed leave club tramp, and id hop in the car with ghislaine and jeffrey, and ghislaine said, he is coming back to the house, and i want you to do for him what you do for epstein. Buckingham palace says, it is emphatically denied that the duke of york had any form of sexual contact or relationship with Virginia Roberts. Any claim to the contrary is false and without foundation. Ghislaine maxwell also denies any wrongdoing. These allegations have been made before, but this is the first time theyve been made without the Legal Protection of the court. Virginia roberts is challenging those she accuses to sue. Prince andrew continues to carry out royal duties. He has personally denied any wrongdoing, but the pressure on him remains. Jonny dymond, bbc news. This is bbc news. The main story this hour climate activists of all ages gathered in new york as a day of action reached its climax. Millions have taken part around the world. In a rare sign of dissent in egypt, protesters have called for president Abdel Fattah Al sisi to go and demanded an end to military rule. Police fired tear gas to disperse them. The United States is to send troops and Missile Defence systems to saudi arabia and the united arab emirates, in response to last weeks attack on saudi arabias oilfacilities. Washington has blamed iran for the attack, although the iranians insist they were not involved. A us spokesman said President Trump had given his approval in response to requests for support. In response to the kingdoms request, the president has approved the deployment of us forces, which will be defensive in nature and primarily focused on air and Missile Defence. We will also work to accelerate the delivery of military equipment to the kingdom of saudi arabia and the uae to enhance their ability to defend themselves. 0ur security correspondent, frank gardner, has been shown around one of the refineries that was severely damaged by missiles and drones. Twisted, burnt and blackened by fire the aftermath of multiple drone and missile strikes across 19 targets, hitting the very heart of saudi arabias oil industry. This was the moment last weekend when the attack halved output and sent oil prices soaring. Today, the government allowed the media into this normally closed site. It wants the world to see the destruction its blaming on iran, which denies responsibility. The damage was clearly spread over a wide area. This is abqaiq, the largest Oil Processing plant in the world, and it got hit in the early hours of saturday morning. The saudis say theyre confident they can restore production by the end of september. What they cant say with any confidence is they can prevent such an attack happening again. Repair teams are still working around the clock. This isntjust about patching up the holes, its about restoring Saudi National pride and prestige in the global economy. Over in the saudi capital, riyadh, life goes on as normal, so i asked people what they made of these attacks. These are just acts of terrorism against saudi arabia from its enemies, said this man, but well guard against it and overcome it. But this man said he was both angry and afraid. This attack has shocked saudi arabia and revealed its vulnerabilities. Thats perhaps why one week on, it is still no no hurry to retaliate. In response to those attacks, the us announced new sanctions on Irans Central Bank but President Trump stressed he was showing great restraint in not using other options at his disposal. At the same time, the us secretary of state has just returned from saudi arabia and abu dhabi where he discussed the next steps. With him was brian hook, the us special representative for iran. It is very important that the saudis continue their investigation of the attacks. These had global consequences, when you attack the Worlds Largest oil facility and violate the basic International Norms of human behaviour. So we do want more nations to hold iran accountable for these unprecedented attacks. The government in malta has ordered an independent inquiry into the murder two years ago of the investigative journalist daphne ca ruana galizia. Her well known blog highlighted corruption in malta, including among politicians. She was killed near her home on the island by a car bomb. The parents of a student who took her own life while at university have called on colleges to help stop others from falling through the cracks. Ceara thacker was found dead in her room in may 2018, three months after an earlier suicide attempt, which her parents were never told about. From the inquest in liverpool, heres our education editor, Branwen Jeffreys at liverpool university, new students are starting. Two years ago, Ceara Thacker was among them. The 19 year old struggled with anxiety, depression and self harm. She asked for help many times. Today, her parents called for change. She approached every Service Available to her. Every one of those services let her down. At every turn, she was failed. I cant imagine how frightening that must have been for her. This is absolutely essential, that all universities have proper systems for identifying students at risk, and communicating effectively with Health Care Services and, where appropriate, with families, to ensure they are kept safe. 0n the 21st of february 2018, ceara takes an overdose. Her gp wasnt told by the hospital, the warden at the halls didnt tell the university. 0n the 22nd of february, ceara contacts University Counselling service. The coroner said it wasnt certain what difference all of this made. When students arrive, their parents now get information about support. There are more counsellors on campus, too. We really do pass on our heartfelt sympathy to the family. 0ne lesson to work closer with the nhs. To share information much more effectively and in real time. The hope to prevent another student falling through the gaps. Branwen jeffreys, bbc news, liverpool. A number of conservative Party Members have been suspended for posting or endorsing islamophobic material on social media. The action was taken following a bbc investigation. There have been repeated calls for the conservatives to hold an independent inquiry into allegations of islamophobia within the party. Heres our political correspondent, alex forsyth. Just three months ago, during the race to be tory leader, this happened. Shall we have an external investigation into islamophobia in the conservative party . They agree. They certainly seemed to agree, including the man who is now party leader, but there has not been Much Movement so far. When is your independent enquiry into islamophobia in your party starting . I think that is under way. We have had very summary action against people who were associated. Who is leading it . We are trying to get to grips with this problem. The problem is another tranche of people who say they are tory members and who have posted or endorsed islamophobic content on facebook or twitter. Comments included. Details were passed to the bbc by a twitter user who has been campaigning on this issue for over a year. We verified more than 20 cases, ranging from individuals liking or sharing one or two comments or pictures to others regularly posting offensive material. We gave details to the conservative party, which said it immediately suspended anyone who was a member but did not say exactly when there might be a full, independent enquiry. A spokesman said the conservative party will never stand by when it comes to prejudice and discrimination of any kind, and that is why it is already establishing the terms of an investigation to make sure such instances are isolated and robust process are in place to stamp them out as and when they occur. But for some, that is not enough. Sajjad karim was a member of the European Parliament for 15 years and is still a conservative. He fears the party may row back on a specific enquiry into islamophobia. Is there a need for it . There is. I have been extremely lucky that i have not directly suffered the consequences of these attitudes, but what i have had is direct experience of fellow parliamentarians, where they conducted islamophobic conversations directly about me, one of whom actually is a serving minister at this moment in time. He hasnt named the minister. The party said if there was an allegation it would investigate, but some want much firmer action on the wider issue an enquiry, and soon. Alex forsyth, bbc news. You might remember us telling you about a planned raid on area 51. More than 3 Million People signed up online pledging to storm the top secret airbase where the Us Government is supposed to be hiding extra terrestrials. So how did it all pan out . The bbcs tim allman will tell us. As invasions go, alien or otherwise, this was a little underwhelming. Here at area 51, it seems fewer than that number bothered to turn up, but for those who did, the hunt for little green man is always worthwhile. A bunch of random people in weird costumes standing outside of a government base . Why would you want to miss that . Thats a once in a lifetime experience. Its like halloween but we are just annoying people. We clicked that we would be going just for the fun of it but as it got more popular we decided hey, why not, go down and actually make a fun trip of it so we go down, were going camping and going to check out the base as much as we can from here. But thats easier said than done. Miles of barbed wire fences and security cameras circle this top secret facility in nevada. What actually happens here is hush hush but it is believed to be a test site for experimental aircraft. 0thers, though, remain convinced the truth is still out there. I think if you witnessed it, you will believe. Theres stuff out there thats incredible, that you wouldnt believe unless you saw it for yourself. And im a believer, there are aliens, there are aliens. One person was briefly detained for urinating near the main gate but the whole event was reasonably good natu red. Then, invasion over, much like et, they all went home. Tim allman, bbc news. You can reach me on twitter. Im regedahmadbbc. Now its time for a look at the weather with phil avery. Hello. Friday brought a lot of sunshine to a lot of places across the British Isles and i dont think were going to see a radical change for many areas on saturday. Simply because the overall pattern is still pretty similar. High pressure in the continent, low pressure in the atlantic, therefore, we are still tapping into this run of south easterly airs and quite strong winds at times, up from the mediterranean, through the near continent and into the heart of the British Isles. That is dry air so we are not seeing an awful of cloud for most of us just at the moment. The exceptions to that, the Northern Ireland s and later in the day, the first signs of the atlantic front trying to cloud things over in the south west. An onshore breeze from the north sea will keep the eastern coast down at about 15, 16, 17 but come inland, 20 plus is widely available. Through saturday night and on into sunday, the first signs of the change in that the High Pressure drifts further away and in comes the front from the atlantic. That will set the tone for sunday. Before the persistent rain arrives, we will have some quite sharp showers and maybe the odd under storm gradually drifting up the spine of the British Isles and then the front makes progress away from the western fringes ever further towards the north and east and to avoid that rain, some of it quite heavy will have to be that further north and east. Still, the temperature in excess of 22 23 degrees or so towards the east but fresh air is coming in from the atlantic and that sets the tone for the start of next week. Monday, not too bad. The rain from sunday gradually eventually clearing away from that far North Eastern corner of scotland and then a lull in proceedings and then late in the day, more signs of the next belt of wet and windy weather pushing in from the atlantic into the south western quarter of the British Isles. Not cold by any means but the temperature is back on what we have seen at the weekend. And then as we move from monday into tuesday, that area of low pressure becomes pretty resident out towards the western side of the British Isles and at times, through the next few days, it will be throwing these belts of cloud and wind and rain across many parts of the British Isles. Its all going to be quite mobile so it wont rain persistently anywhere for the whole day but while that rain is around, you will notice it, this is not showers, thisis belts of rain moving in from the atlantic. And there is not a great deal of difference as we go from tuesday into wednesday. Low pressure still out towards the west of the British Isles, still with these weather fronts working their way in and at times, some really quite strong winds. Quite a change on the way. This is bbc news. The headlines a day of worldwide protests on Climate Change has reached its climax in new york with a rally addressed by Greta Thunberg. The swedish teenager said she hoped the protests will mark a social tipping point. Demonstrations have taken place in cairo and elsewhere in egypt against the government. They called for president Abdel Fattah El sisi to go, and demanded an end to military rule. Police fired tear gas to disperse them. The woman who claims she was abused by Prince Andrew has given an interview to us media. Buckingham palace emphatically denies the duke of york had any sexual contact with her. Thomas cook has asked the government for a multimillion pound bailout as the travel firm scrambles to avoid collapse. Now in a few minutes, itll be time for newswatch. But first, heres click.
