Contact with her. Hello and welcome to world news today. Millions of people, including many children, have been taking part in demonstrations around the world, demanding tougher action on Climate Change. This was the scene in new york, which is the latest city to see another climate strike by pupils skipping school to join the protests. The teenage activist Greta Thunberg, who protested alone outside the Swedish Parliament last year to draw attention to Climate Change, is leading the demonstration. Similar protests have been seen in cities in more than 150 countries. With the story of one of the biggest co ordinated global protests on record, lets hear from our correspondents around the world. There have been more than 100 events gcioss there have been more than 100 events across austria as this country sta rts across austria as this country starts to kick start a global day of action. Thousands of people have gathered here in sydney to campaign for what they are calling Climate Justice across australia. I was talking to a high school student, a teenager, and she said she was too scared to think about ever having children because the future was far too bleak. What they want is for australia to have no new coal, oil 01 australia to have no new coal, oil or gas projects and also to shift to 100 Renewable Energy. Will be per minister Scott Morrison be swayed by all of this . Probably not will be per minister . He said there has been too much activism in classrooms. Lam in i am in new delhi, in front of environment of ministry and sciences, they have joined the Global Climate try. It started off withjust a few Global Climate try. It started off with just a few hundred people but the crowd quickly swelled into several hundred. What do we want . Climate justice . When do we wanted . 0ver Climate Justice . When do we wanted . Over the last hour, there have been hundreds of people gathering here, many of them with her home made placards. 0bviously, many of them with her home made placards. Obviously, there are many students, school age children, university students. You might be able to hear in the background, the speeches have started. They are to go on until 3pm this afternoon. For those to expend why they are here, we can be joined those to expend why they are here, we can bejoined by lola and fatima. Why are you here . I am here because i believe Climate Change is the defining issue of our generation. The policies we want, a green new deal, education reform, our planet is on the line. There are hundreds of protesters here, Climate Change, climate activists who have come out in the middle of nairobi. They are marching towards the government office. They have a petition. There are numberof office. They have a petition. There are number of issues they want to highlight here in kenya, prevention of the four station two deforestation, as well as. They say coal energy is not clean and thatis say coal energy is not clean and that is not. Here in africa, the impact of Climate Change has already been felt. Even though it contributes significantly less to Climate Change as well. That is a flavour of the protests. As we heard, the swedish teenager Greta Thunberg has become the voice of the climate protest movement. She was asked if she ever thought she would be able to galvanise so many people. This is not only my voice, this is the voice of millions of people around the world, and i think it is because we are young and we are the ones who are going to have to live with this in the future, and we are not the ones who have caused this crisis. And just that we speak truth to power. We are not worried about how it will affect our reputation or oui how it will affect our reputation or our income or things like that. We tell, say what we want to say and we say how it is. Were not afraid to be, become unpopular in that sense. Greta thunberg there. Samira hussainjoins me now from new york. We have been watching the clock, the world spinning round, protests and all the different time zones. Attention focused on new york. What is happening there . Look, the protests began earlier this morning and this been going on for several hours now, we marched from one area of new york and came down to lower manhattan. Here we are in battery park, and there are thousands and thousands of people, and the energy here is certainly veryjovial. We just had some performances from young music singers that have really been getting the energy of the crowd up, buti been getting the energy of the crowd up, but i would also say that there is still a certain amount of urgency because at root, what has brought all of these people together is Climate Change and the real need to act, and we certainly feel that importance, or certainly get that from the people that ive spoken to. And in different parts of the world, theres been different bits of controversy about schoolchildren going on so called strike and theres been some criticism. What is theres been some criticism. What is the feeling there in new york . The new York Public School system had allowed all of their 1. 1 million stu d e nts to allowed all of their 1. 1 Million Students to be absent, to take part in this, but of course this is the United States and a lot of things often become politicized, so it was also made clear by the new York Public School system that teachers we re Public School system that teachers were not allowed to participate, because this could be seen as a political action. A real sign that, yes, on the one hand you see thats there have been, this has been open to stu d e nts there have been, this has been open to students to participate in. But on the other, you certainly see that there is a Strong Political tinge to this Climate Change issue, and that was certainly made true by the statement made by the new York Public School system. Just briefly, just mark our card for us. What is expected to happen there over the next couple of hours . Over the next few hours, we are going to hear some more speeches, some more people talking and really just more speeches, some more people talking and reallyjust trying to ta ke talking and reallyjust trying to take advantage of the energy. Look, it is by design this protest is happening just before the un Climate Summit, when World Leaders would be coming here to new york, and people will be asking them for concrete plans and not platitudes, but real action that can be taken to try and stem the curb, curb the flow of Climate Change. Ok, Samira Hussain in new york, thanks very much for bringing us up to speed with everything thats happened. Fridays protests come ahead next weeks un Climate Change summit in new york, where World Leaders will discuss how best to address global warming. Heres our science editor, david shukman. A stark reminder of what the protests are all about. For these people on a pacific island, its a matter of life and death of whether their country can actually survive in future. As the planet heats up, the seas rise. And, for millions of people in low lying communities, the threats are already extreme and theyre set to become much worse. I saw for myself two weeks ago how the ice of greenland is melting adding to the level of the oceans. And scientists fear that more melting will follow. All the time, human activities keep adding to the problem. This is indonesia right now. The fires are immense, like in the amazon, and they release Carbon Dioxide into the air, and that makes the rise in temperatures even faster. The challenge is that the world is on a course towards Dangerous Levels of warming. The global average temperature has already risen by one degree celsius over the last 150 years or so. And Scientists Say 1. 5 degrees is the maximum safe level. Anything more risks a range of damaging impacts. But were currently heading towards a three degree rise by the end of the century and thats even if all the climate promises made by governments are kept. If nothings done, some fear an increase of four degrees with potentially catastrophic results. So what can be done . Well, the un wants more Renewable Energy like wind turbines. Today, the British Government approved hundreds more and theyll cost far less than expected. In the same way, the price of solar power has fallen. And the un is hoping the summit next week will see new promises to build more installations like this. But hard facts remain. Much of the world depends on coal the dirtiest of the fossil fuels. And moving away from it is difficult. And leaders including President Trump support it. There will be a struggle ahead. David shukman, bbc news. The latest headlines climate activists of all ages have gathered in new york as a day of action reaches its climax. Millions have taken part around the world. President trump has insisted his dealings with foreign leaders are totally appropriate after a whistle blower claimed he made promises reportedly to the president of ukraine. Returning now to our lead story. Millions of people have been taking to the streets around the world, demanding tougher action on Climate Change. Sweta chakraborty is a risk and behavioural scientist. Shejoins me now. Thank you very much for your time. Lets start with the millions of people coming out around the world today, do you think it nudges the dial at all . I believe think it is such an unprecedented, Global Movement that really is unique, this is the largest environment to protest in history. Remember, this upcoming week is action week. There were three components to it. One is today, aliens of people around the world, thousands of unique protests and strikes that are happening all rally around this cry of the 16 year old who is so soft spoken but so authoritative, Greta Thunberg, who has one message. If we are going to school and studying, we need to study about our future. The climate emissions, how quickly is warming, they need to do theirjob. We that is what we are seeing and it is unprecedented. Inherent new york at the un, as we are kicking off this week, you can feel the movement, and is very palpable. Ok, but its palpable. The people have taken to the streets, had their say. It does depend on what the politicians of policy decide at events like week, the uns summits. What do you want to see out of that . Its really critical this time around to take it vantage of all this energy and to really move it towards notjust pledges and commitments, but scalable action, and so that is what is being asked of all of the participants coming and attending, and not just those participants coming and attending, and notjust those in positions of making decisions but also the youth leaders. Also those who have been disenfranchised or maybe not part of the Decision Making process, really creating a voice for themselves that is putting that pressure on, that is going to result notjust in that, lets do this, but actually come up with a plan. How to do it. Notjust, we need to do it. This is the first time the un is meeting where the sciences really settled and that is the starting point, that is the foundation for these talks. The science is settled. But america, especially his leadership at the moment, hasnt bought in, isnt as enthusiastic. As perhaps countries in the rest of the world. Thats right, and thats really importunate. For the unfortunate. The us has been this leader to come up with them limitation strategies, and so given that this it ministration has been responsible and lacking in this duty as the global leader, we are looking towards the rest of the world and to some of these other voices that normally would not take pa rt voices that normally would not take part in the International Relation policymaking process and the like a Greta Thunberg, for example, we are looking to them for leadership for really implement to both strategies. If that can be done, no leadership can be better than that leadership. If the us can stay out of the way. I think as a good ministration comes m, i think as a good ministration comes in, we can get the United States back involved new administration comes in. We are looking for alternative leadership this time around. Is that possible . If the us is not involved, china, although it is not involved, china, although it is doing well on renewables, is also hugely reliant on coal and things like that. You have these huge nations are not actually involved, how realistic is any kind of change . The one thing that came out recently is, germany taking real steps towards recognising the Younger Generation and the green party, and the increasing support around those sort of reasonings for what needs to happen coming forward, that is the hope that we have and the leadership thatis hope that we have and the leadership that is already being demonstrated is the biggest polluter in the european union, germany, making this big commitment towards clement policy budget. That is the kind of thing i think we can see coming out of east asia climate policy. Thing i think we can see coming out of east asia climate policy. Ok, sweta chakraborty, thank you for your time sweta chakraborty, thank you for yourtime and we sweta chakraborty, thank you for your time and we will keep an eye on those un Climate Summit talks next week. For the moment, you can catch me on twitter. Im lvaughanjones. This is bbc news. Bye bye. Hello, good evening. The message is really to make the most of the sunshine tomorrow before the weather changes. Today, we had lots of sunshine around, the highest temperatures were in highland with a high of 25 celsius. You can see from the earlier satellite picture how most of the cloud has been kept well away, but its this area of cloud here that will bring a change in from the atlantic during the second half of the weekend. Ahead of that, though, weve seen some thin cloud across eastern parts of england earlier on. That could reform actually for a while and drift its way into eastern scotland. Its been quite blowy today as well, and that breeze is still there overnight, so less fog around, could be some bits and pieces through the vale of york for example, but it wont be as cold as it has been over the past few nights either. Now, lets set up the weekend and High Pressure has brought the sunshine over the past few days. That is drifting its way further east across europe, which is why the winds are picking up, but its a southerly wind and hence those high temperatures. Waiting in the wings, we saw the cloud earlier on, this weather front here will start to push in from the atlantic. And we may start to see a bit of cloud developing across the Far Southwest of england and wales and then later into Northern Ireland and maybe one or two showers as well. But elsewhere, a lot of sunshine around and could see some cloud pushing its way into the Northern Isles for a while, but it is going to be quite breezy once again, a noticeable breeze, with some gusty winds across many western parts of england and wales together with Northern Ireland. But a warmer day for most of england and wales. East wales through the midlands and across towards the home counties, temperatures may get up to 25 degrees here. But the weather starts to change really overnight as though showers develop, and they could turn heavy and thundery. Everything you can see slowly pushing up from the southwest, and behind the showers, weve got this band of more organised rain which could be quite heavy as well. Thats moving northwards and eastwards, so it should be clearing away from wales and the south west on sunday afternoon. Turns a bit cooler and fresher here, northeastern parts of scotland may well have a dry day but ahead of this rain, temperatures could get as high as 22 or 23 in the north and east of england. That weather system is going to be pushing the rain northwards and generally out into the north sea by monday. Weve got a window of drier weather before the next weather system comes in. And this area of low pressure is going to be dominant as we head into next week. Never too far away, the weather looks much, much more unsettled. Showers or some longer spells of rain, quite a bit cooler and at times rather windy. This is bbc world news, the headlines a day of worldwide protests on Climate Change is reaching its climax in new york, with a rally addressed by Greta Thunberg.
