Its 5 oclock our main story is that children around the world have stayed away from school to take part in a global day of protests calling for action on Climate Change. Thousands of separate demonstrations are taking place in 150 countries, including the uk. The protestors are demanding more action from both governments and businesses to cut emissions. This is the scene in new york where more than a Million Students from 1,800 Public Schools have been allowed to skip school in order to protest. The environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg will address the crowds later. More on that shortly, but first this report from duncan kennedy. What do we want . Climate action when do we want it . Now home to 7. 5 billion people. Beautiful, but fragile. Robust, but warming. And today, the stage for a global message. The Pacific Island of vanuatu helped send the first of those messages. And no wonder. Their low lying homes could be among the first to disappear, if sea levels rise. In sydney, children also put climate before classroom, thousands marching with teachers and other workers to call for Government Action to cut Greenhouse Gas emissions. The younger a person is, the more that the changing climate will impact them as they grow, and the less of a voice they are given today. Considering we have such a short amount of time to turn this issue around, its vital that young people are at the forefront of this conversation because they will be impacted more than anyone else. I think this is the most important issue of our time and im here for my childrens future. I think it is that important. This isnt a fringe movement, this isnt a greeny issue, this isnt a lefty issue, this is a human issue. They have to stop making political advantage of this issue and unite the country behind a crisis approach to dealing with modifying our economy to be carbon free. Its absolutely essential. The Swedish Environmental activist Greta Thunberg later tweeted her support. The new day in south africa brought singers and dancers onto the streets. Here in johannesburg, they also wanted to send a message to next weeks un conference on Climate Change that the speed of action must be increased. In india, the crowd seemed more modest. But, in a country whose economy is expanding at around 7 a year, the government has argued growth can exist alongside climate controls. From thailand, where this was still a day that found room for humour. Pa rt part of the world work related protests for costs to be made in one decade, not three. As some governments are planning. In britain, around 300 protests are taking place across the country. This will in edinburgh where many marched. Some believe this debate in the uk will soon be dislodged again. This was hove on the south coast, a place bathed in sunshine, the campaigners basking in the solidarity of their joint action. At harrogate in north yorkshire, children were again the focus. The government said it could not endorse eight school day being missed but that message seemed lost here amid the enthusiasm of their time protest. This government has done more in terms of Climate Change than any government before in terms of our commitment, at net zero carbon and the fact that we have already legislated on it. We will continue to build on that. Children should not be off of School Committee should be sturdy studying and learning and im sure that message will get through. They are all in my way, im in a rush ive got deliveries to make. The biggest march outside parliament which campaigners say has yet to wake up to the urgency of a warming planet. 0rganisers state tens of thousands gathered here on a Singular Mission to save our collective futures. Duncan kennedy, bbc news. We have reports from our correspondents around the world whove been following the Climate Change protests starting with phil mercer in sydney. More than 100 events across australia as this country helps to kick start a global day of action. Thousands and thousands of people have gathered here in sydney to campaignfor have gathered here in sydney to campaign for what they are calling climate justice. I was talking to a high school students, a young teenager and she said she was too scared to think about ever having children, because the future was far too bleak. They are angry, they are scared and they are insisting that the world is on the edge of a climate catastrophe. But they want is for australia to have no new coal, oil or gas projects and also to shift to 100 renewable energy. All of this of course in a country, australia, that relies on coal for the vast majority of its electricity. Where the Prime Minister be swayed by all of this . Probably not. In the past he said that theres been too much activision in classrooms. Activism. Thousands of teenagers, schoolboys and schoolgirls who have decided to ditch classes this afternoon and join this demonstration. 0ne ditch classes this afternoon and join this demonstration. One of many demonstrations that are taking place across france and indeed across europe as the youth movements seek to weigh upon the conscience of Decision Makers around the world. They call here as elsewhere is on governments to get serious. To take not just what there were call governments to get serious. To take notjust what there were call half measures, but really important life changing sets to bring the rise in under control. Because, and its the age old charge of the young against the old, if nothing is done its not you will suffer, you will be gone. It is us who will pay the price. Here in africa the impact of Climate Change is already being felt even though it contributes significantly less to Climate Change itself. We are seeing more less to Climate Change itself. We are seeing more recurrent less to Climate Change itself. We are seeing more recurrent droughts, particularly south of africa. It means people cannot get food to come their livelihoods as farmers are threatened as well as energy problems. A lot of hydroelectric power depends on rivers in the water levels, when they fall, it means that they cannot have electricity and you are already seeing rationing of electricity in several countries. Zimbabwe, south africa, because of that. However its already making strides. Towards conserving the environment. Just this year they planted 350 Million Trees in one day. So they are showing that it can be done and how the climate can be preserved. And in that series of reports and night roby. Nairobi. Heres the series of shots from new york. Crowds gathering in large numbers. Samira hussain is in new york for us, where over a million children have been allowd to miss school to join iam i am absolutely in the thick of it and you can probably hear that speeches have already started. This protest was due to begin right on schedule in fact, and if ijust take a look around me. Ifearwe schedule in fact, and if ijust take a look around me. Ifear we may have lost the connection to some era, which is always a risk when youre standing in the middle of the crowd. Cannot be guaranteed to communication will hold out but you can at least see those pictures from above new york city which gives you above new york city which gives you a little bit of the flavour it was only a flavour of the sheer scale. If we can go back we will will move on to matters closer to home with the same subject matter in mind. Graham frost is head teacher of Robert FergusonPrimary School in carlisle hes also the Cumbria Branch secretary of the National Association of headteachers. Hes taken a group of pupils to the rally in carlisle this afternoon. Welcome. Good to see you. Tell us a little bit about what you have done today and what difference you think it has made. Welcome we have been teaching the children about Climate Change, and of course an event is happening right on our doorstep and soi happening right on our doorstep and so i asked the children if they would like to go along, and we had quite a few children who took up that invitation. Some of them prepared some lovely placards in a couple of them were confident enough to say a little speech about what they feel strongly about regarding Climate Change. And this was presumably with their parents saying they are quite happy about this . Absolutely. Entirely with parents consent and in fact encouragement, a couple of the children were coming because their parents approached me, not because i offered it out to the children at first. These are Primary School children, how much realistically can they relate to what this is all about . If you consider that the children are learning about their world, and what is going to happen to it, they are learning that thats part of the curriculum. When they are confronted with the reality of that even from a very young age they can quickly grasp that theres, heres the planet we are living on, the promise ofa planet we are living on, the promise of a great future on that planet is tarnished by the thought of what could happen if we had down the path towards a dystopian future and dont ta ke towards a dystopian future and dont take the necessary action. The children then turned around to us and say what are you doing about it . And i dont know about you but i remember being at school myself and learning about the rain forests and the depletion of them and the impact that would have, and that was going back to the late 80s. Here we are now still with the same concerns and effect theres so much more serious, we have come to at the point that scientists are telling us is a point in which things will tip. The children are grasping this and and you get the anxiety that you feel and so the best thing that we can do is give them opportunity to express how they feel about that because it is well documented that its a remedy to that anxiety that they feel if they are given a platform to speak out. You will be well aware and it may have been an issue that face you in terms of the debate about this, there are some that will say these children, they might have great aims say these children, they might have greataims in say these children, they might have great aims in terms of what they are campaigning for here, but today it would be better off in the classroom, what would you say to that point of view . I completely disagree with that as you can gather from what i have said. The children, theres nothing to stop schools from incorporating the activity that children are engaging in when they are protesting and completely justifying that within the curriculum. Whether its learning to be persuasive with writing or in speech, whether it is learning about democracy or rule of law or freedom of speech. Whatever, whether it is creating banners and thinking of good slogans to try and convey a message, theres so many ways that you can incorporate activism into a school curriculum. I would argue very strongly that they benefit greatly from that. When im taking them into Something Like the protest today think of the things they are learning about the world. With a teaching like this they are able to learn about how they can make a difference in that world and really do need everyone to be making a difference on this, dont we . Thank you very much indeed. Millions of people are protesting around the world to demand greater action on Climate Change. The European Commission said a fully workable and legally operational solution must be put forward to manage northern irelands border. Lets go live to westminster and out Political Correspondent chris mason good evening to you. Convention dictates that tv reporters standing in places like this should sound shuddering late enthusiastic about the zinger of the story they are in possession of. Truth is with us when we are no further along this evening then we were this morning and so mr barclay met his opposite, the eus chief brexit negotiator and they had their talks and they started and they finished, and they both offer their analysis afterwards must was very similar to their analysis going on. Still a lot of work to do but there isa still a lot of work to do but there is a common purpose to secure a deal and theresa is a common purpose to secure a deal and theres a recognition in the capitals in the Foreign Ministers have been speaking to you, they want to see no deal avoided, they want the teams to reach a deal. Is that clear message from the Prime Minister that a deal is doable but theres a significant work to do. The serious discussions are taking place. We are moving forward with momentum and talks will continue next week between the technical teams and it is important that we deliver a deal, because thats in the interest of the United Kingdom and in the interest of the European Union as we move forward to a strong future relationship which is where we all want to go. The latest contribution of brexit white noise there. What does that all amount to . Uk trying to find a alternative to our good old friend to the backstop, they say it ties the uk into a perpetual close relationship with the eu over which it would have no control. Brussels has said get rid of the backstop if you can come up with a legally operable alternative. Lots of ideas on the table in the eu says that none of them add up to a proper plan. We heard from one side of the fence as far as these negotiations are concerned, what about the other . Look out for eight zinger of a turn of phrase here from him. As the president said this week very clearly, we are always ready to examine on an objective base, any proposal, but they must reach all objectives of the backstop, to protect ireland and protect the consumers protect ireland and protect the consumers and the businesses of the eu and single market. I guess after my meeting, a very cordial meeting with Steven Barclay and his team, lots of work has to be done in the next few days. You have been very patient for a long time and i know you say. Brexit is a school of patients, but were still to reach an agreement. You asked me if im optimistic or pessimistic compared to yesterday. I said im not optimistic, im not pessimistic,. Brexit is the school of patients. Yes we are all graduates of that school. Theres an Assembly Next Week with the Prime Minister will have a chance to meet the big players. The president of france and chancellor of germany. If theres a deal it will may become they are but a deal on the current timeframe is less likely than it is likely where we are right now. Thomas cook could go in to administration this weekend unless it can plug a two hundred Million Pound funding gap. Britains oldest package holiday firm is in talks with stakeholders, after its banks demanded that it comes up with contingency financing. Without a rescue deal, the firm is likely to collapse leaving more than 150,000 british holiday makers in need of repatriation and threatening 9000 jobs in the uk. Simon gompertz reports. Holidays in danger. At any time, there are up to 100 thomas cook flights in the air. Now there is mounting concern they will not be able to keep going. People who have booked have been turning up at shops to see how they are affected, likejean in london, hoping to go to tunisia next month. She thinks the government should step in. We have just got to keep our fingers crossed, havent we . And hope for the best and we will hopefully know by sunday, or whenever. Are you worried that thomas cook might be in financial trouble . I dont think so. I think they are a big company. I mean, they will find a way of getting out of it, obviously. Well, hopefully they do. Already overseas with thomas cook right now, more than 150,000 uk travellers, mostly on Package Holidays with atol protection to bring them back. But tens of thousands are on flight only deals without that guarantee. The cost of repatriation is put at £600 million, organised by the Civil Aviation authority. That includes paying for some to finish their hotel stay. There are 22,000 jobs at risk, 9,000 of them in the uk. A big question is who qualifies to be brought back without paying . When monarch failed two years ago, the government did intervene and paid for everyone to return. That set a precedent which ministers would find hard to ignore. Your flight will be organised by the Civil Aviation authority and you will be brought back pretty much as normal. It is people who have maybe got a half term booking, christmas or new year trip, or indeed who have booked for next summer who will find that, while they will get their money back, either from their Credit Card Company or under the atol scheme, of course there will be fewer holidays out there and prices probably will have gone up. Thomas cook is in the throes of negotiating a rescue deal with the Chinese Group fosun, which already owns club med and wolves football club. But what has thrown all of that injeopardy is a demand from thomas cooks banks to show it can produce £200 million in funding to tide it over the lean winter months. The pilots union says that since one of the banks calling for more financial assurances is state owned rbs, it should be making sure the company is rescued rather than putting it underfurther pressure. Thomas cook, his statue in leicester, founded the business back in the 1840s. It might still survive much longer but, if it doesnt, we could see the biggest ever emergency return of holiday makers. Simon gompertz, bbc news. And if youre worried about what this might mean for you, a little later ill be speaking to Emma Coulthurst from the holiday Price Comparison website, travel supermarket. Thats in about ten minutes time, so do stay with us for that the bbc has been taken to see the Saudi Oil Installations that were attacked with missiles and drones last weekend. The attack which saudi arabia has blamed on iran struck at the heart of the countrys economy and threatened global oil supplies. 0ur security correspondent Frank Gardner reports from one of the facilities that was hit. The missiles were able to penetrate through saudi arabias very expensive multibillion dollar defences that they bought at vast cost from the west. Now there is a lot of head scratching, trying to work out how to protect places like this this vulnerable, Critical Infrastructure from a repeat attack. So what were looking at here is whats called a separation tower. This is where khurais oilfield, part of saudi aramcos operations, separates out the gas and the oil from the crude mix that comes out of the ground. This is what theyve got to do before they can even transport it and export it. Its the vital beating heart of this countrys oil economy. And thats really what this country depends on. Now, the incoming missiles that smashed into this and further east, the uptake processing plant, crippled temporarily around half the countrys capacity. Theyve managed to repair quite a bit of it. But the longer question is this. While there is still this huge rivalry between saudi arabia and iran and the yemen war is continuing, whats to stop this happening again . Time for a look at the weather heres darren bett. Thanks very much indeed. Lovely day today, wasnt to . More sunshine to come tomorrow but then it is all changed. The Civil Aviation authority is on standby to bring 150 thousand people back to the uk, amid concern the travel firm thomas cook could collapse. The company has to raise 200 Million Pounds in contingency funds to secure backing for a rescue deal. Luke dudley is on holiday in turkey with friends and is worried about whether hell be able to get home on his thomas cook flight this coming sunday as he starts a newjob on monday. I am certainly worried. Its not something i have experienced before. I think other members of the group. What can we do . Its a waiting game, really. We have come to enjoy our holiday. We dont want to get too worked up over it. But, i certainly. It will certainly play on the back of my mind that we may not be able to get home on sunday and were going to have to either pay for new flights or wait for a charter plane home. So what protection do holiday makers have . Emma coulthurst is from from the holiday Price Comparison website, travel supermarket. Welcome. So, people in different situations. Some on full package deals, some flight only, what is the picture for them . The picture is thomas cook is seeking out funding and at the moment, it is hard to say this to people but if you are on holiday at the moment, just enjoy that holiday, they are hard earned and we hardly ever get them to try and we hardly ever get them to try and relax and know if a company goes into administration, it is always protected by atoll and that means you are not going to be left stranded despite what you might read online. It is not going to happen, you will be brought back under a package holiday. If you are on a package holiday. If you are on a package holiday. If you are any fight situation and the airline goes under administration and it is light only, there are ways to seek your money back and there are a rescue flight money back and there are a rescue flight you can buy. Two years ago with monarch airlines, when they went into a demonstration, it was not under the atoll scheme, the government stepped in and the government stepped in and the government stepped in and the government stepped in. This time i spoke to the Civil Aviation authority and they confirmed they have been working in conjunction with the department for transport, theyve got eight repatriations programme in place called operation matterhorn. They were not disclosed the details but there are is something going on behind the scenes, just to be there as a contingency. You might have a bit of a waitand contingency. You might have a bit of a wait and await some instructions but ultimately, you will be looked after . You will but there will be people who are maybe going away in the future and thinking, oh gosh, there is lots of speculation in the media at the moment. Any company goes into administration, a travel uk company and you have a package holiday booked you are protected so you will get your full refund. The only bad situation would be if a company goes under and you have booked for a really busy times like christmas or the october half term, you might struggle might end up paying a little bit more but ultimately you will be protected. It is worth also saying if you are in a fight on the situation in the future and that goes under, you can claim under the Consumer Credit act, section 75. If the flights cost more than hundred pounds. There is protection for and supply of failure in your travel insurance. In this scenario, in a scenario where an airline goes into a demonstration or airline goes into a demonstration or a company does, then you can seek that and that is good because if you have to stay longer, that insurance will cover you for extra accommodation and for the cost of a fightback as well. A brief word on the bigger picture, is it simply because we are booking fewer Package Holidays and is that why a company like thomas cook is in difficulty . It isa like thomas cook is in difficulty . It is a combination of the markets they are in and the fact that it is a very busy Holiday Market but actually people are booking so it has been a buoyant summer. 0nce people realised no deal was off the table until at least 0ctober people realised no deal was off the table until at least october and the government was saying flights will continue and you will get a visa for up continue and you will get a visa for up to 180 days, there was no reason not to travel so it has been a buoyant summer and the deals are at their particular because of sterling against the euro is not very good, package holiday prices have been coming down. Thank you very much indeed. Every year, fires are started in indonesia and malaysia to clear land forfarming it creates a smoky haze that can end up blanketing the region, affecting millions of people. This year alone the fires have devastated more than 800 thousand acres of land and schools and businesses have been forced to close as air quality has worsened dramatically. Rivan dwiastono reports from kalimantan. Firefighters and volunteers struggle to put out this fire, one of the thousands of hotspots burning across the island. But their Water Resources are running out. The community is praying for rain. Translation our main problem now is water. Here in Palangka Raya the long dry season has made our water sources run dry. Its difficult to get water close to the hotspots. From the air, their homes are barely visible for the haze. Hundreds of thousands of acres of burning forest and peatland has thrown a toxic blanket over the region. Its having a devastating effect on peoples health. Tens of thousands of people are now suffering from haze related illness. This local hospital has set up this clinic with meds and oxygen for the locals who have been breathing in toxic haze for weeks. And the air outside is having a real impact on locals. Some of the worst affected are children. This five month old baby has been struggling to breathe. He is being treated alongside his sister. Endangered orangutans are also suffering while the fires destroyed more of their shrinking habitat their forest cleared to make way for lucrative palm oil plantations. Indonesia is the Worlds Largest producer, and these fires were lit illegally to clear more land. Helicopters water bomb hotspots and thousands of troops have been deployed to fight the fires. These peatland fires released enormous amounts of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere. At the peak of the 2015 fires, the worst in two decades, the blazes are estimated to have emitted more Greenhouse Gases than the entire us economy in the same period. After those devastating fires, indonesia vowed to prevent it from occurring again, but observers say that week long enforcement and corruption is the major barrier to stopping them coming back every year.
