So called forever war. And, the link between dirty air and dementia a global study finds pollution is responsible for a steep rise in cases. Its 7 00am in singapore and midnight here in london where borisjohnson is back in number 10, downing street, after a day of eu talks in luxembourg. The European Unions frustration with the uk over brexit has bubbled over in quite extraordinary fashion. The Prime Minister of luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, made a stinging attack on the British Government, describing the Brexit Process as a nightmare. The two men had been due to give a joint news conference, but mrjohnson pulled out after a group of noisy protesters gathered nearby, leaving mr bettel gesturing to an empty podium. Heres our political editor, laura kuennsburg. Air miles cant be exchanged for a deal. Today is not going to be a breakthrough day. Time for borisjohnson to see some of those he needs onside. I mean, its september already and moved into number10 injuly and its only now that youre going to see jean claude juncker. You could have done this weeks and weeks ago. We have had many conversations with our friends and partners, and theyve moved a long way. But a jet and a convoy racing through luxembourgs streets doesnt mean we are speeding towards an agreement. I think a deal is there to be done, but clearly if we cant get movement from them on that crucial issue of whether the eu can continue to control the uk, we wont be able to get that through the house of commons no way but what is the actual solution that youre proposing . Is it giving more power to stormont, for example . These are certainly some of the ideas that are being talked about. This is all doable, its all doable with energy and goodwill, theres a germ of an idea there. But itsjust a germ of an idea . And so. Well, there are, theres a lot of thinking going on. If its down to goodwill, theres big trouble. A small crowd, making a lot of noise, was outside Boris Johnsons meeting with luxembourgs leader. Boris, leave our rights alone having tried and failed to move it inside, number 10 chose to leave rather than appear before the crowd. But Xavier Bettel didnt miss the moment. Maybe even savoured it. So, now its on mrjohnson. He holds the future of all uk citizens. It was a decision from the party, it was a decision from David Cameron to do it. They decide, they decide, i deeply regret it. But dont put the blame on us many british Prime Ministers have sat alongside him before, but this one is happy to provoke, happy to try to find a way around. It does seem that since youve been in office, that some of the things you have done, you seem to believe the conventions and rules somehow dont apply to you. Oh, really . Really . Obviously, i humbly disagree. If youre talking about having a queens speech, i think that was the right thing to do. We need a queens speech. So, when it comes. By the way, all this mumbo jumbo about how parliament is being deprived of the opportunity to scrutinise brexit, what a load of claptrap actually, parliament, ithink, has lost about four or five days and i think actually what the people of our country is a little less of this sort of bloom. One of the people whos extremely gloomy about whats happened is your old friend and rival and colleague David Cameron. He says that the leave campaign that you lead, lied. He said that you behaved appallingly. I have the highest respect and affection and regard for him. He and i worked together for many years and i think he has a legacy, turning the economy around, that i think he can be very, very proud of. So, thats my view on dave and what hes got to say. Another tory Prime Minister whose fate will be decided by our relationship with europe. With time so short, the volume is going up, as the clock ticks down. Laura kuenssberg, bbc news, luxembourg. He said washington was seeking more proof, and he stressed that he hoped to avoid war. Iran has denied involvement in saturdays drone attacks, which were claimed by iranian backed Houthi Rebels in yemen. The damage to the saudi plants has cut Global Oil Supplies by 5 , and pushed up prices. At one point during trading, they reached their highest level since the gulf war in 1990. An attack by Houthi Rebels in reaction to saudi interference in yemen. Last month, a targeted attack on a military parade in aden killed dozens. Back then i interviewed the Deputy Foreign minister. He warned there was more to come. Translation for the last five years we have been the ones who are attacked. It is only normal that we retaliate to defend our land and our people who have been the main victims. This was the most damaging and humiliating blow to saudi arabia since they intervened in yemens civil war. They are supporting the Yemeni Government with the backing of the uk and the us. Fighting against Houthi Rebels backed by iran. Four years on, thousand have been killed in air strikes, and the conflict has created the worlds worst humanitarian crisis. Previously, the rebels only had limited capabilities, but claiming this latest attack changes that. Other than words, they have shown no evidence. The us release these satellite images proof, they say, that it was not the Houthi Rebels but iran that was responsible. This behaviour is unacceptable. It is unacceptable and they must be held responsible. Make no mistake about it this was a deliberate attack on the global economy. As tensions in the region escalate, iran categorically denies the allegations but continues to defend the Houthi Rebels. Translation yemeni people are exercising their legitimate right of defence. The attacks are reciprocal, and the main solution is to hold these attacks. If attacks like this continue, the fear is that saudi arabia, with their allies, will respond with greater force, and it will be the people of yemen that pay the price. An american drugs manufacturer thats been closely identified with the opioid addiction epidemic in the United States has filed for bankruptcy. Jeff had been injured playing american football in high school, and started taking 0xycontin, a drug prosecutors allege was aggressively and deceptively marketed by purdue pharma, a Company Owned by the Sackler Family, one of the richest in america. Did you have any sense of how addictive 0xycontin was . No, no. And it really bothers me because nobody told us there was an addictive quality at all. They purposely set out to misguide doctors, mislead the public, and have everyone misunderstand and assume they were safe. Purdue has now filed for bankruptcy, part of a proposal to settle some of the thousands of lawsuits against it, protect it from others, and to provide money to tackle the crisis. These are some of the adverts that the company ran in the late 90s that it says falsely downplayed the risks of 0xycontin. Some patients may be afraid of taking opioids because they are perceived as too strong or addictive. That is far from actual fact. Since 1999, 200,000 americans have died from overdoses related to 0xycontin and other prescription opioids. The settlement has been fiercely opposed by states such as new york and massachusetts, who have accused members of the Sackler Family of being behind moves to deceive patients. 0ther allegations that purdue and members of the Sackler Family involved, refused. They deny they contributed to the crisis, and pointed to heroin and fentanyl as more significant than other painkillers. That crisis goes on and so does the legal fight against purdue. Fighting intensifies, and so does the pain, in what is now the worlds deadliest conflict. A new global study of its kind has found a clear link between exposure to air pollution and developing dementia later in life. Researchers in australia have found that the rates of dementia were more likely when people were exposed over a long period of time to two polutants. In fact, cases of the condition are increasing at a rate of more than 20 a year, most of which are in developed countries where air pollution is rife. Lets speak to ruth peters from Neuroscience Research australia, who co authored the study. Shejoins me now from our sydney studio. Thank you forjoining us. What made you make this link between air pollution and dementia . Good morning. All good evening. We know that air pollution is associated with increased risk of health issues, like an increased risk of high blood pressure, and increase risk of having a stroke. We also know that those are risk factors for dementia, so for example, we know if you have high blood pressure, especially in midlife, between say 40 especially in midlife, between say a0 and 60, you are at increased risk of developing dementia. We thought, lets go and have a look at the evidence, and we drew together the evidence, and we drew together the evidence that was available from around the world, looking at exposure to air pollution and later cases of dementia, and pulled it together and found that the evidence was really similar in all of the studies that we were able to find. Assessing your report, you can have dementia if you are exposed to two polluta nts dementia if you are exposed to two pollutants for an extended period of time. What are they . Particulate matter 2. 5, which is extremely small particles or droplets that are airborne, and to put that in context, they are 2. 5 micro metres across, and a human hair is around 5070 across, and a human hair is around 50 70 micro metres. And the other is nitrogen oxide. The evidence was strongest for those two pollutants, but there are other pollutants, and we are not likely to be exposed to single pollutants at any one time, so single pollutants at any one time, so what our study is really raising is that the evidence is strongest for these two, but we need extra investigation to understand the role of these pollutants in the context of these pollutants in the context of others and the dose. What about the pollutants we are experiencing currently here in singapore. It has enveloped the citystate, and also malaysia and indonesia. Could this also lead to dementia . malaysia and indonesia. Could this also lead to dementia . I think you are raising an interesting point. The studies that we looked at looked at exposure to air pollution over a longer period of time, but we know that both short and long term exposure to air pollution is associated with other poor Health Outcomes. This means we need to look at how air pollution is affecting brain health alongside other Health Outcomes to understand how things like the Current Situation in singapore might have an impact on brain health long term. Thank you for joining brain health long term. Thank you forjoining us. Just tempering the sunshine late in the day as we bring a front in from the day as we bring a front in from the atlantic. It will still be there as we move from tuesday into wednesday. Enough cloud associated with that, with rain primarily across the northern half of scotland. Elsewhere it will be a decent day. The High Pressure will have moved just sufficiently far towards the east to push those chill north westerly winds out into the north sea, so it may feel a tad warmer across the north east of scotland, simply because you have lost the strength of the wind. Come thursday, that High Pressure will be very much the dominant feature, keeping it fine and settled in all parts. You will notice as we move towards the latter part of the week, the high centre will move over into continental europe, which lends the chance for us to pick up air of continental origin. There is still some warmth across the continent at this time of year and we will start tapping into that.
