Hello and welcome to bbc news. Prime minister borisjohnson says he is cautiously optimistic of getting a brexit deal. Hell travel to luxembourg on monday for his first meeting since taking office with the European Commission president , jean claude juncker, and the eu chief brexit negotiator, michel barnier. At an event in the north of england today, borisjohnson told an audience that theres a rough shape of a deal in place for britain to leave the European Union. Our deputy political editor, john pienaar reports. The names boris, borisjohnson. Trust me. Nice to see you. It looks like campaigning, and it is, for future votes and for trust that hes the one to deliver brexit no more delays. An exciting time, he told one supporter. Not exciting, worrying, she said. Maybe worrying for him too, wanting a brexit deal, attacked by critics for closing the commons. Im all in favour of our mps. Heckler why are you not with them in parliament sorting out the mess that you created . Get back to parliament and sort it out hes being heckled by the Commons Speaker too, whos warned of more laws to ban a no deal brexit, maybe force another extension. Whatever the shenanigans that may be going on at westminster, we will get on with delivering our agenda and preparing to take this country out of the eu on october the 31st. What chance of a deal . He is hoping for a last minute breakthrough. I am cautiously optimistic. Is that a good enough characterisation . I am cautiously optimistic. He will meet the eu Commission President in luxembourg on monday, still a long way from agreement. His Democratic Unionist Party allies want to be convinced by a brexit deal that they see as no threat to the union, and they havent been. We are not going to vote for any arrangement which makes us different than the rest of the United Kingdom and as a result forms a border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom. As far as the Irish Government is concerned, our position hasnt changed. I would have to say that what has been put forward so far falls very far short of what we need. So the chances of a deal still seem remote, but that doesnt mean it cant happen. It would certainly help borisjohnson out of a tight political corner. If he is forced to extend brexit he could expose the tories to a potentially serious threat from the brexit party. And now there is a law that could virtually out laura no deal brexit. Wanting a deal, even needing one, wont necessarily make it happen. Good luck with brexit. Thank you very much. Where theres a political will, theres often a political way. But no one has found it yet. Lets get some of the days other news. The United States and brazil say they will Work Together to promote Economic Development of the amazon rainforest. The american Actress Felicity Huffman has been sentenced to 14 days injailfollowing her involvement in the Us College Admissions scandal. The desperate housewives actress was involved in a plan to fix her daughters exam results and help her get into good schools. Our north america correspondent david willis has the latest from washington. She was accused of falsifying results on the sat, which decided what calibre of university her daughter would get into. She expected accept the response ability early on, she is a first of 33 parents caught up in a scandal to appear in court, and that 14 day sentence has been criticised by some, one newspaper writer here calling it a slap on the rest, and a disgrace. A lot of people taking to social media to say ethically that there is one rule for the rich, one rule for the not so rich. Also making a point as well, that this is a sort of thing that has existed in one form or another for many years, perhaps somebody wealthy decides to donate money to fund the building of a part of the university for example, or to provide for some sort of endowment, and thereby gets their kids in that way. But certainly, it has raised attention to the inequities of the American Education system i think. Four people have died in spain as heavy rain and flash flooding continue to batter the south east of the country shutting down Regional Airports and schools. Olivia crellin reports. A woman and her family are hauled to safety. One bag of possessions all they could take with them, as the water steadily rose around their home. These dramatic images of a landscape now underwater, and the urgent response to save those trapped by the deluge recorded by spains military emergency unit, now called out to help the thousands affected. Just 48 hours after some areas saw their heaviest rainfall on record, swathes of spains southern countryside were transformed. Translation i went out to buy bread and then i saw the whole town centre filled with water, and i was like, how did this happen . Everything filled with water, the whole side over there. And there was a submerged car as well, people in the water i dont know the speed with which the floods hit shocked many and even proved fatal. Of the handful of victims the floods have claimed so far, most perished in their cars when the water either flipped their vehicles or trapped them inside. Worst hit are the regions of valencia and murcia, where the water has been sweeping anything in its path along with it, forcing hundreds of people to be evacuated while hundreds more are left stranded. This includes tourists. Two consecutive days of torrential rain has forced local airports, Train Networks and dozens of roads to close. But at alicante airport, the arrivals lounge filling with travellers, who had nowhere to go. Nobody gets out here, everybody is stuck in the airport. And with us are five, six planes coming in, so everyone has 200 passengers. There are more than a thousand people here stuck in this airport. They cannot pick up our hire car, the taxis have got the message from the police and from central not to drive because it is not safe. So the few taxis that are coming here, of course, for money, it is terrible. The line here is, i dont know, perhaps many many hundreds. As many areas affected remain on red or orange alert, the authorities continue to recommend that citizens remain at home and avoid using their cars. But while the weather is reported to have stabilised, the extent of the damage it has caused is still unclear. And the numbers of displaced continue to grow. The family of a teenager who suffered a fatal allergic reaction after eating a chicken burger in a restaurant, is demanding a change to the laws governing food allergy labelling. Owen carey, who was celebrating his 18th birthday, had told staff at a byron burger restaurant in london that he was allergic to dairy. But he wasnt told that his food had been marinated in buttermilk. The family wants clearer information on the ingredients of all dishes on menus. Heres angus crawford. Right, this. Owen carey. Let me start again. Living life to the full, his family say. Acutely aware of them, but never letting his allergies hold him back. But a meal out an 18th birthday treat killed him. Fried chicken from byron burger, cooked in buttermilk. Ingredients not listed on the menu at the time. Triggering a severe allergic reaction. The only warning was in small print on the back. The coroner said the lack of information had been falsely reassuring. Owen, she said, made the serving staff aware of his allergies, but then the system broke down. And owen was not informed there were allergens in the order. His family are now demanding change. Owen was the shining light in our family and his death should not have happened. We hope now that something good can come out of it and we are calling on the government to change the law on allergen labelling in restaurants. Later, i spoke to owens mother and father. We need to know that the Restaurant Industry as a whole will adopt what we hope will become owens law. That they will voluntarily, and before it becomes law, they can take action. Owen had a load of energy and was always smiling and wanted to get the most out of life possible. Byron burger says it has now made changes to its menus and training. And it is clear that the current rules and requirements are not enough and the Industry Needs to do more. More to help support customers with allergies and more to raise awareness of the risk of allergies. So how does the law stand at the moment . Well, restaurants must provide information about the 14 most commonly occurring allergens. They can do this in writing, on the menu, a chalkboard or information pack, or they can do it verbally, and this is where problems can arise. Young staff in busy restaurants with a high Workforce Turnover can make mistakes. As the number of people like owen, with life threatening allergies grows, calls for reform grow, too. For owens family, hope that the lessons from his death can prevent others in the future. One of the uks largest pawnbrokers has closed all its stores and left customers in the dark, with a helpline not taking calls. Some of the evidence at the inquest into the suicide bombing of an Ariane Grande concert in manchester in may 2017 is to be kept secret. The coroner in charge of the case said that releasing certain information from the Security Service and the police might jeopardise national security. 22 people were killed in the attack, which was carried out by a british man with family in libya. Our correspondentjudith moritz said the coroner gave a lengthy explanation of his decision. Quite fulsome detail, because now it is still the case that inquests into how 22 people were killed here at the arena are yet to be held, we have had pre inquest argument, and the coroner has been looking at arguments about whether some evidence should be heard in private. The inquests are due to start in april next year, that will be nearly three years since the attack, and the families of those who died have lots of questions, including whether the attack could have been prevented, and whether the Security Services knew about the movements of the bombers family beforehand. Today they found that they wont hear all the relevant evidence. Lawyers for the Security Services and the police have argued that to make some of it public could pose a risk to national security. Lawyers for the families demanded full transparency, and they say the authorities are seeking to withhold the information are the same authorities that stand to be criticised. The coroner, sirjohn saunders, has agreed that there is a risk to national security, in fact he said that to make the information public could help terrorists carry out similar atrocities and make them harder to prevent. And so it is now thought that rather than holding inquest, instead a Public Inquiry will be held. Despite its name, that sort of inquiry means that some evidence can be heard privately. This is bbc news. The headlines britains borisjohnson says hes cautiously optimistic about a brexit deal as he prepares for his first face to face talks with the European Union next week. The desperate housewives star Felicity Huffman is sentenced to two weeks in prison forfraudulently securing a University Place for her daughter. The number of People Killed as a result of Domestic Violence in the uk, is at its highest level for five years and almost all the victims are women. Figures obtained by the bbc show that last year 173 people died in Domestic Violence related homicides. The government says its fully committed to tackling the issue and ministers have promised legislation when parliament returns next month. Heres tom symonds. Three men with something in common theyve alljust killed their partners. Jalal uddin stabbed his 50 times when she wouldnt let him gamble with the family budget. Michael rolle escaped on a bike after murdering his girlfriend, charlotte huggins, in a jealous rage. Roderigo giraldo killed his wife, then put her body in the boot of this car. He then buried her in a shallow grave. What time did you go out looking for her . Giraldo claimed she was missing, that he tried to find her. He was lying not just to the police. 2 30. But also to his desperate family. My mum, margory isaza villegas, was taken from us on 13th january 2019. She will be forever with us, weaved into our thoughts, memories, and hearts. Thats a statement you made to the court. It was a statement i made to the court. To be honest, it was all about her. Its about the person that she was and the positivity that she instilled in us. Julian giraldo is steadfastly trying to find something positive from his mothers murder and his fathers life sentence. You dont know when you can end up in a situation where you end up basically by yourself, because youve lost your mum and yourdad. Her body was found in this woodland. It was one of the first 100 killings of 2019. Weve been examining those cases to try to understand why the murder rate has been rising. We found around a fifth were cases of Domestic Violence, and seven were murdered with a knife notjust the weapon of the streets, but the home too. Invisible in knife crime is the number of women who are killed by the use of a knife, in the kitchen or in the bedroom. And thats part of the issue about violence against women. It mostly remains invisible. There are awareness campaigns. Police can issue new non molestation and Domestic Violence orders against abusive partners. But critics say theyre just not being used enough. In february, Aliny Godinho gets on a bus to pick up her children from school. Her estranged husband ricardo is following in this black pick up truck. She gets off the bus. Shortly after this video, he stabbed her to death. She told the police that he was controlling her mentally. The Police Watchdog is investigating their response. But some lawyers and campaigners believe a lack of resources is preventing forces from acting. Women have to go off and get orders on their own in the civil courts, and then the orders are breached and the police dont do anything to arrest the suspects, the perpetrators. We hear this all the time. This is clare wood. She was murdered in 2009. The killer, her boyfriend, had an appalling history of violence against women. Clares law, as it became known, allows anyone to request information about their partners past. But its still not been made an actual law. That was due to happen this year, and then brexit chaos intervened. This week, borisjohnson tweeted his commitment to a new bill to tackle an horrific crime which tears families apart. Tom symonds, bbc news. But campaigners also point to cuts to womens refuges. Only one in five victims will have report to the police. There are so many more ways that we can intervene and help early, health, housing, right across the public sector. And that is what we need this bill to deliver. This week, borisjohnson tweeted his commitment to a new bill to tackle an horrific crime which tears families apart. Tom symonds, bbc news. The singer sam smith has asked fans to use the pronouns they them rather than he him after coming out as non binary. The british singer, famous for songs such as too good at goodbyes and writings on the wall, made the announcement on instagram, describing enduring a lifetime of being at war with their gender. Well, for more on this were joined now by lee airton author of gender your guide. Thanks so much forjoining us on bbc news. Explain to our viewers, first of all, why is your pronoun, the pronoun by which you want to be called, so important for people who describe themselves as non binary. Well, think it is key to understand that ones pronoun is important for everybody, just people who are non binary, were transgender, but for everyone. Think it is a common misconception that pronouns are particularly important for people are trans or non binary when eve ryo ne receives are trans or non binary when everyone receives a lot of affirmation every day from other people who gender them correctly, refer to them correctly using the correct pronouns. So often remain people who have never had that pronouns mistaken, you realise very quickly that pronouns are important for everyone, even if they are not transgender. It for everyone, even if they are not tra nsgender. It is just for everyone, even if they are not transgender. It is just a sign from other people that they are seeing and validating who we are and that eve ryo ne and validating who we are and that everyone enjoys every day. So given all of this, why do you think it is so important and significant that a big, famous star like sam smith has come out as non binary . big, famous star like sam smith has come out as nonbinary . I think it is important because there is a misconception that non binary people, so people who are not firmly in the man box or the woman box are a kind of newfangled phenomenon, but actually there have been many, many ways that people have lived gender outside of those boxes for thousands of years across the world. So there have been people in different walks of public life who are non binary and it is very significant because sam smith is conceivably the first person who attains this level of celebrity then came out as hodeida. So this is just a sign that non binary people are part of every profession, every walk of life, including communities of people who are celebrities. Who they are. I think is excellent this kind of gender diversity. Sam has said that they are ok with people making m ista kes they are ok with people making mistakes and, it is difficult, when you are used to using a certain pronoun to get it right every time . It absolutely is. But i have learned in my work with hundreds if not thousands of people at this point, about welcoming gender diversity, including other peoples pronouns, is that people are very, very concerned about making a mistake and thatis concerned about making a mistake and that is usually a huge barrier to people wanting to try. So non binary people wanting to try. So non binary people and tra nsgender people wanting to try. So non binary people and transgender people who know that there pronouns may not slip easily off the tongue to some people, we know there will be mistakes. In my practice they always say were not trying to have no mistakes, that is impossible, this isa mistakes, that is impossible, this is a cognitive shift using an unfamiliar pronoun for the first time. They say is actually to try to make a better mistake. So if you catch yourself, whether you are a person who knows someone who is non binary or whose pronoun has recently changed, or a journalist who is going to be covering sam smith in the coming days and weeks and months, if you find yourself having made a mistake, all you really have to do is say, sorry, rephrase, and move on. And that is something that folks expect will happen and that will dissipate over time. And you think thanks to sam smith and what they have done and said today, this will help a lot more non binary people feel more confident about themselves and about the choices . I absolutely do. Because it is vitally important that the truth, the historically grounded truth about human gender diversity be something that is commonly understood. So when someone of sam smiths global stature comes out and lets the world know that this is who they are and that is only going to increase the possibility of many non binary people of all ages to recognise and see that. Much like other different kinds of identities underneath the tra nsgender spectrum had become a little bit more liveable when there are more people who come out and show that this is a real and possible and, indeed, who come out and show that this is a realand possible and, indeed, in some cases, very old way of life. Doctor lee airton, thank you so much. My pleasure. Game of thrones is one of the most Popular Television programmes of all time. It may involve dragons and zombies, but many of its themes were inspired by events in medieval history. Now the story is being retold in a form that may seem a little familiar. The bbcs tim allman explains. This is the bayeux tapestry and this isnt. This depiction of the Norman Conquest is more than 900 years old. This version of a song of ice and fire is a little younger, but no less ambitious. The tapestry is over 87 metres long. So it condenses over 90 hours of tv into 87 metres of tapestry. It was made and worked on by 30 embroiderers from the National Museums of Northern Ireland who worked in top secret. Game of thrones was not so much a series of books or a television programme, but a cultural phenomenon. Millions of people watched it around the world and the awards just kept on coming and coming. This tapestry is, perhaps, even more impressive for those who appeared in the show. Its amazing. To see the scene actually recreated, you know, makes my heart sing. Because this is where i am, this is where i began, and this is where game of thrones began. So for me this is a very proud moment and to see this as a legacy is fantastic. The tapestry was created in Northern Ireland, where much of game of thrones is filmed, and is now on display in normandy until the end of the year. From bayeux to winterfell, with a bit more blood and guts thrown in. Tim allman, bbc news. Love a bit of blood and guts. They will be back with the headlines in a few minutes. First though the weather with ben rich. Hello there. The kind of weather you should expect this weekend depends very much upon where you are going to be spending it. The further south you are across the uk, you can expect plenty of sunshine, it will be dry and it will turn warmer. The further north you are across the uk, there will be some outbreaks of rain at times, not all the time, it will feel a bit cooler and it will be windy, particularly across the far north of scotland. Because low pressure will be trying to muscle its way in here, quite a deep area of low pressure with a set of frontal systems, down towards the south though, High Pressure will hold on, giving a lot of dry weather. Underneath that high, quite a cool start to saturday morning in fact one of two spots in the countryside hovering around two or three degrees. Further north and west, Northern Ireland and scotland not so chilly to start the day, because more of a breeze will be blowing, we will see more cloud, some outbreaks of rain, particularly across the far north of scotland where it will be very windy through the day. Further south across england and wales, once any early mist has cleared, you can expect a lot of sunshine and those temperatures not doing badly at all for this time of year, 23 24 in the south east, 16 19 for scotland and Northern Ireland, which is still not bad by any stretch. In to saturday night, some pretty windy weather across the far north, in fact for shetland we could see gusts of 60 70 mph, maybe a touch stronger than that, at the same time this band of cloud and increasingly patchy rain will be sinking southwards across scotland, Northern Ireland down into northern england, to the south about some clear spells and generally speaking not quite such a chilly start to sunday morning. Sundays weather will be split essentially by this frontal system here. This will wriggle around through the day, there is a bit of uncertainty about exactly where its wriggles will take it, but it looks like we will see some cloud and rain for Northern Ireland, that rain fringing into southern scotland at times, perhaps getting as far south as the north midlands and north wales. To the north of that we will see some spells of sunshine, but again a brisk wind across northern scotland and a rather cool feel to the weather, 15 in aberdeen, but to the south of that frontal system, it will be pretty warm. 25, maybe 26 with a lot of sunshine. As you go through sunday night into monday, that front, weakening feature, will push away southwards, Building Back in from the south west, but that brings us a flow of air from the north or the north west, so generally speaking as we head into next week, things are going to feel rather cool. There will be a lot of dry weather, one or two showers here and there, but those temperatures around the high teens or low 20s at best.
