Behind it, we get more sunshine arriving, some showers across scotland but temperatures higherfor all of us. Hello. This is bbc news with martine croxall. Well be taking a look at tomorrow mornings papers in a moment. First, the headlines. The government says its sticking to its brexit plans despite a new law against no deal and amber rudds resignation peace talks between the taliban and the us are called off. President trump blames a deadly attack in the afghan capital, kabul. Hours to go before British Airways pilots go on strike, affecting up to 300,000 passengers. Joy for australia. Theyve retained the ashes after bowling out england on the final day of the fourth test at old trafford. Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are katherine forster, journalist at the sunday times and joe twyman, director at deltapoll. Will come to you both. Lovely to have you here. Many of tomorrows front pages are already in. In the telegraph, Boris Johnsons plans to stop a brexit extension if mps dont vote for a general election. In the times, borisjohnson tells cabinet ministers they may have to accept a three month delay. The metro leads with the chancellor, sajid javid, saying we have a cunning plan to deliver brexit but it would be madness to reveal the details. In the financial times, the irish Prime Minister warns Boris Johnson not to expect any concessions from the eu on the irish border issue. And in the daily mail, culture secretary nicky morgan says shell stand by Boris Johnson and urges others to do the same but says he must tell the truth on what progress hes made with talks in brussels. We started brexit in all its glory. The financial times. Leo varadkar plays down talks progress on brexit deadlock. There is no movement likely, is there, on the backstop . Depends entirely who you listen to. The noises coming out of ireland are not positive. Borisjohnson is off to dublin tomorrow to meet the ever premier. The irish premier. And there is, Boris Johnson premier. The irish premier. And there is, borisjohnson has spoken about an all ireland agriffood zone badly by lee everard, has said that is not enough. I remember the old uk backstop was at the behest of the British Government because originally it was proposed just as a backstop for Northern Ireland. But theresa may said the whole of the uk had to be in it. Now it seems possible that the dup faced with the prospect ofjeremy corbyn in government, might, it says here, that they are prepared to be flexible, but the dup are not known for their flexibility. They dont wa nt for their flexibility. They dont want Northern Ireland to be treated any differently from the rest of the country. The Democratic Unionist Party dont want any difference of treatment at all, but we are very stuck. Another attempt from the government tomorrow to try to trigger an election, likely to fail. That seems to be the case in the lot of the stories, reporting on the kind of noises as katherine says we are hearing from all sides. It is difficult to identify exactly what it is that is the truth behind this. How much of this is bluster, how much is a negotiating tactic and how much is a negotiating tactic and how much is a negotiating tactic and how much is simply made up. It is really difficult to know. The key bit here is this issue of the dup and its potential flexibility. Speak to some people in Northern Ireland and they say the dup, they would be willing to offer some sort of compromise. We speak to others who know a lot about them and they say you shouldnt call their bluff. This is a party that was effectively set up to say no. And they may well throw a spanner in the works at the last minute. Up until now ireland have been able to rely firmly on the rest of the eu allies over what they deem to be a non negotiable part of the withdrawal agreement, the backstop. They absolutely have. Ireland is the key to all of the problem is, if you like, because getting out because the irish border has been the intractable problem. How can believe ina intractable problem. How can believe in a meaningful way and be out of the Single Market and Customs Union and have a Free Trade Agreement and keep trade flowing freely without any checks and no one yet has found any checks and no one yet has found a solution and that is why we are still where we are. The Daily Telegraph, johnson can legally stop brexit extension. The pm has drawn up brexit extension. The pm has drawn up plans to sink to remainers bill. But then you read the act the article. He is going to do it, or not a cabinet source has told the Daily Telegraph there is a letter, does it stop the Prime Minister sending other documents to the eu . I dont think it does. Its suggesting a letter would be sent asking for an extension and when asked why we are asking for an extension the government is saying we are not and we would send another note saying we dont want an extension, so im glad weve sorted that out lets talk about the cricket we will, well get there in good time it is very unclear what this means. It strikes me that this is an attempt to make it clear to all of the mp5 who may or may not be voting tomorrow about the general election that this is not done and dusted, and that they think that by avoiding an election they can prevent no deal, they can achieve in extensions. This is suggesting actually if you dont support an election then you lose your chance of getting an extension. Whether that is true or not remains to be seen but it strikes me that thatis to be seen but it strikes me that that is the play theyre going for. The government says they will stick to the law, the law, says there will not be a no deal brexit but then they say we will not ask for an extension, we will leave in october the 31st so there has to be a deal, then, by the 17th of october when then, by the 17th of october when the summit takes place. Is puzzling and im not sure what it is that im failing to understand about this strategy. They seem to be clinging to some hope that the eu might sort this out by refusing to give us an extension. Havent they said they would only last week for the week before . But they might not, Emmanuel Macron was talking tough and saying that he would veto less and of course he didnt. It is highly unlikely that they would agree because otherwise you would have the fallout of no deal and they would say this is your fault, but the French Foreign ministry saying we cant keep going through this every three months. And what is this extension for . The thing is we can keep going through it, cant we, if thatis keep going through it, cant we, if that is what is requested. Of the French Foreign minister says we cant, im sure there are other people in europe who disagree. A lot of this comes down to the question of this comes down to the question of pragmatism and when push comes to shove, will the European Union be willing to kick the can down the road a little longer and just muddle through . I imagine they probably will. Shall we look at Something Else and move on . The Daily Telegraph says do not turn up to the airport, British Airways warns passengers. This is a good Old Fashioned page of knees. They do not have much money at all, British Airways pilots a senior captain can earn, they have rejected an offer of 11. 596 earn, they have rejected an offer of ii. 5 pay rise, which, over three years. That would take senior captain to 200,000 per annum. Im sorry if my heart is not pleading for them. They are cancelling 1500 flights over two days and it will cost British Airways an estimated 80 million in lost revenue not to mention what it does to their good name and theirstanding. Mention what it does to their good name and their standing. Expect a bit of chaos with certain airlines, but British Airways, people expect better. They are paying more, and they expect a level of service and i think people will be very cross about this. The knockon effects could last into the week. 50 flights cancelled today over a lack of parking space at gatwick, heathrow and gatwick, not for cars but for planes. That means that flights from overseas cannot come back because they havent got anywhere to put there. Yes, flights from new york, delhi, johannesburg and hong kong all affected. The weight you want the best people in charge of a plane, dont you have to pay them well . After they did take various cuts going back and they are just trying to get back to where they were, but still, ultimately it is the poor people who have the misfortune to be booked on these flights. If i was flying somewhere id be very upset. But im not. But i think id be very upset. But im not. But ithinka id be very upset. But im not. But i think a lot of people will get upset. Cant avoid it any longer, katherine, it is the cricket. In the guardian. Ben stokes fails to repeat his ashes miracle. Where are we at with the ashes, joe . Because england cant win it, but they could lose it. Ds millions with a victory have retained the ashes the australians have. Because they won them last time but if this series is drawn we dont necessarily lose the ashes, we just dont win the ashes. That is dependent on the match that is taking place next week at the 0val. So it may be that england are able to level the series with a win there. They wont win, that would mean there would be a draw. And the series would be tied. Is that all clear . Im afraid i have a bit ofa all clear . Im afraid i have a bit of a blind spot about cricket. I have three boys and my husband is australian, so in my defence, in the interest of marital harmony it is better that i keep away from cricket and we dont have the paid for channels. The problem is you are going next week and you are not a good omen for england. Yes, i have seena good omen for england. Yes, i have seen a variety of different teams beat england when i go to watch live, so i will be there on saturday, hopefully not seeing the capitulation of a largely talented team that has not been able to perform this series. The star between the teams has been steve smith who has been a phenomenon this series. And is quite if not one of if not the best players in the world. Lets return to the Daily Telegraph. Calls for a total ban on pavement parking. Why . Parking on the pavement disproportionately affects people with mobility or visual impairments and some are afraid to leave their homes according to this telegraph article. When people are on the pavement to varying degrees in areas where it is not allowed, that creates problems for people who are using the pavement and perhaps dont have full visibility and mobility. And the government is considering, has been urged to introduce a nationwide ban on parking on pavements. Apparently following the lead of london where it is already outlawed. There are places when you are encouraged to park partially on the pavement. Places when you are encouraged to park partially on the pavementlj thought park partially on the pavement. thought there were lots of streets in london where you parked happily on, ican in london where you parked happily on, i can think of several near where i live. This is slightly different. The reason people do that is because the roads are too narrow. I dont think anyone thinks im just going to park on the pavement for fun. So that i am six inches closer to the front door i think you are right. We will see whether that comes in or not. That is it for the papers. Joe and katherine will be back at 11 30pm for another look at the papers, and dont forget you can see the front pages of the papers online on the bbc news website. Its all there for you seven days a week if you miss the programme any evening you can watch it later on bbc iplayer. Thank you, joe and katherine. Next on bbc news its click. To date is notjust nations competing to put the ships and people into space. Private companies are getting into it too. Elon musks space by delivers cargo to the iss and is one of several Companies Exploring the notion of Space Tourism putting nonprofessional astronauts into space it has signed up astronauts into space it has signed upa astronauts into space it has signed up a billionaire to take a trip around the moon. Amazon bossjeff bezosis around the moon. Amazon bossjeff bezos is planning to take passengers to the edge of space with his company blue origin by the end of 2019 and his ambition to land humans on the moon by 202a. There is one company that is further along the Space Tourism journey than any other. And now Virgin Galactic has opened the door to its new hq and given our reporter exclusive access. It isa it is a little after 7am and im heading into the desert in new mexico, about 20 miles past a place called truth 0r consequences. The reason for that early start is that we are going to get a rare glimpse inside that, which bills itself as the worlds first commercial spaceport. Thank you very much. The only way that you can get to space today is with the russians, and theyre currently charging nasa about 80 million a ticket. Spaceport america is the new home of Virgin Galactic, the Company Founded by billionaire Sir Richard Branson to take paying customers on 90 minute flights to the edge of space. The spaceports exterior is the product of british architects foster partners. Eventually, five spaceships and two carrier aircraft will reside in the hangar. Passengers receive three days training before blasting off to the upper atmosphere. And spaceship from base, you go from zero minus 10 on time. It is also home to mission control, where all Flight Operations are monitored from, and this is the very first time that a tv crew has been allowed to film inside this room. The winds are holding, 160 at ten knots. Virgin galactic has moved all of its operations to new mexico from its original base in mojave, california. The white knight two mothership aircraft has already moved in, and continues flight testing. But the actual spacecraft, dubbed spaceshiptwo, will arrive at Spaceport America at a later date. The white knight carrier aircraft is really performing a rehearsal for a real spaceflight. It is going to ascend to the altitude where it would normally release a spaceship, perform a few manoeuvres, and come back around to land on this runway. Scotsman dave mackay is Virgin Galactics chief pilot. He takes me for a drive along the spaceports two mile runway. This is something that i wanted to do all my life. I wanted to be an astronaut, and i wanted to go to space. Dave successfully completed a spaceflight earlier this year, and has been awarded his commercial astronauts wings. Welcome to the club, astronaut. Thanks, base. I like this club. What is the spaceship like to fly . The spacecraft is amazing to fly. At launch, were sitting underneath white knight two. At release, its like going over the top of a rollercoaster, so you get this lightness in your stomach, which is nice. Two, one release, release, release. You havent lit the rocket motor yet, so there is silence just for a few seconds. We light the rocket motor. Fire, fire. So we accelerate away. Within a few seconds, we go through the sound barrier. We go mach 1. We are going to space. The sky goes from blue to dark blue to black in what seems like a few seconds. Immediately after shutdown, you are in weightlessness. That point, well allow the customers to unstrap. At the end of boost, you are there with no forces on your body, no motion, because itsjust sitting there, and no sound. As we are coming back down, in this feathered configuration, now were a glider, and weve got about 15 20 minutes of gliding to come back down and land at spaceport. So different, really, to what i expected, that the words that came out of my mouth was this is unreal just astonishing. The curvature of the earth, you see so much of it that you now get a sense of scale, of the size of the planet. And in the meantime, youre looking out into this blackness of space, and you cant help but think, well, what else is out there . I think something that a lot of people will take away with them after their spaceflight is how thin the atmosphere is, and how important it is to look after it. So far, over 600 people have signed up to take a flight with Virgin Galactic, with tickets costing £200,000. But, at a time of increased concern about the environment, is it responsible to send wealthy people to space for fun . Actually, environmental impact, the c02 impact of this vehicle, is much less than you would think. By air launching it, and because its so small and uses carbon fibre, we actually dont have a very big rocket motor in the back. And so the per person co2 emissions is, for the average flight, around that of a Business Class flight from new york to the uk. Theres an awareness of our planet documented scientifically with astronauts. They come back changed, with a greater realisation of the fragility of our ecosystem and ecosphere. The irony of this idea isnt lost on space experts, though. The fact that they have to go that far into space above the planet to have that emotion of feeling protective over the world that they live in is sort of ridiculous. But you have to put it into perspective of the fact that space travel is very limited in how much it actually contributes to co2 emissions, in comparison to aircraft. Its a tiny fraction of what aircraft put out there. There have been delays and setbacks for Virgin Galactic. In 2014, one of its spacecraft crashed during flight testing, resulting in the death of its co pilot and serious injuries for the pilot. Dave mackay acknowledges the time that testing is taking. So, if you look at military test programmes, the risk levels are different. Were building a safe, reliable commercial system. Its very, very different to everything that has been done before. But we still have some more flights to do, with more people in the back, and once weve done a few more of those flights, well be ready to start commercial operation. So were getting very close. It has taken longer than i guess we thought it would do initially, but i dont think with hindsight, i dont think thats at all surprising. On paper, Space Tourism can seem a bit frivolous, but we are moving into an era of commercialisation of space travel anyway. Most government funded experiments in space, either on a space station or probes for other planets, are going to be shipped out to commercial companies, and so furthering space travel in that sense is actually going to benefit from Space Tourism as well. So we have to take into account not just the impact of Space Tourism in the sense of our economy, but also the impact on the life changing impact that the people who will be on those planes will go through, and the impact they will have when they return to earth. When do you think Virgin Galactic is going to be putting paying customers up into space . When is the date when is that going to happen . Right now, according to our current projections, we think that we can start commercial operations next year. So the race is on. Space could be about to get a lot more crowded for those that can afford the price of a ticket, of course. Wow, that was marc. This is marc. How was your trip to almost space . Its great. Its difficult not to get excited by spaceships. Yeah. So weve got amazon doing blue 0rigin, weve got spacex doing a variety of Space Tourism projects, and now we have Virgin Galactic as well. They look like theyve got the most advanced proposition. But how would you rate these Different Companies at the moment . Theyre all completely different, and they all have their own advantages, their plus points. But, you know, virgin has got a spaceport thats pretty much up and running. Looking at blue 0rigins idea, jeff bezos is suggesting that their capsule might be autonomous. So they might launch, with the tourists inside, theyd get to look out the windows and see the earth, and then it will land back on the earth, but without a pilot. Now, ive got an amazon echo, and alexa can barely understand me. So whether the Company Behind that technology whether i would trust them to send me to space or not autonomously, i dont know. I really, really dont know. To be fair, though, spacex are launching rockets and landing them autonomously. Yes, they are, in all fairness. 0k, marc, cheers. Thats it for the short cut of click this week. Theres plenty more in the full version which is waiting for you now on iplayer. Youll find us on social media, too, on youtube, facebook, instagram and twitter. Thank you for watching and we will see you soon. Hello there, it has been warm in the sunshine today, chilly when the cloud comes over and more cloud arriving overnight from the north west. That will bring some rain as well, initially it was scotla nd rain as well, initially it was scotland and Northern Ireland, and moving into western england and wales, heavy rain at times with much more cloud around tonight, no one here isjulias last night. Except perhaps across east anglia when we will have clear skies for a bit longer. Tomorrow its quite messy, cloudy with outbreaks of rain, pushing into eastern parts of england. Four northern areas, the rain easing through the afternoon, may be brightening a touch but the wettest weather continues across wales in the south west of england. Some heavy rain, possibly thundery, and the chilly day with temperatures only around 1a, 15 in many areas. For tuesday, things looking brighter. A little bit of cloud that might produce but on the whole a much drier there were some sunshine. Feeling warm as well, but there is some wet and windy weather there in the north west later on. This is bbc news. The headlines at 11 00pm the government says it is sticking to its brexit plans despite a new law against no deal and amber rudds resignation. You might expect, in the balance between getting a deal and no deal, 5050 in between getting a deal and no deal, 50 50 in terms of work. But it is not that. It is located, 90 of government time going into preparing for no deal. We are always going to behave as a government, you would expect that, and it will be tested in the court. What we are going to do is test very carefully what it does and doesnt require. That is not only the lawful thing to
