Ships and aircraft evacuate im extremely sorry, on behalf of the government, that we lose such thousands of people from islands in the bahamas worst hit a talented colleague. By Hurricane Dorian aid agencies expect 50 50 in terms of work but it im very grateful that she has say the situation is desperate. Resigned for the reasons that she has stated and for her is 80 of government im going into staunch support of colleagues. Preparing for no deal. It is, sadly, evidence of the position we are in because of British Airways pilots prepare to go on strike the obsession about leaving the eu for the first time in is 80 of government im going into preparing for nodeal. She now says in a particular way at a particular she will sit as an independent mp time is now producing a series the airlines history. Instead of a conservative. 21 of what i consider to be irrational and the travel show moves and actions by the government, collea g u es goes to switzerland instead of a conservative. 21 which are very damaging and it needs for the worlds biggest, colleagues were expelled last week. To rip up its strategy, and most infrequent, wine festival. Do something new, because this i know i couldnt carry on working thats in 45 minutes, is just not going to work. At such a high level and see 21 of my colleagues who are good, moderate here on bbc news. People, who also want a deal, excluded from it and i needed to move and stand by them. Tomorrow, the builder 21 mps gave up their party careers for becomes law. It we have seenjojohnson resign, says if borisjohnson cannot reach we have seen amber rudd resign. Good afternoon. An agreement by the end of an eu would you urge others now to resign amber rudd has been giving more from the government . No, im not in a position details about why shes resigned summit on the 19th of october then of urging my colleagues to do he must ask the eu for a further from the government. Anything other than what they think themselves is the right thing. Delay to brexit, to january next its very important that colleagues both remain in the government year. Opposition parties are in order to seek to influence it, she told the Bbcs Andrew Marr sceptical that mrjohnson will try but if they cant reconcile that, she hasnt seen enough evidence that they must make their own decisions downing street is doing enough to get a deal. We dont believe we but if the conservative party to get a brexit deal. Can pin him down and i dont trust and shes angry about the expulsion is going to have a future, him an inch and i dont think anyone its got to make sure that it of what she called good contains the broad mix of colleagues moderate conservative mps. Does. We have got a Prime Minister that weve always had in the past, of what she called good we are a centre right party, 110w does. We have got a Prime Minister now who says he wont even abide by not a right wing party. But, weve got to demonstrate that the chancellor sajid javid said by having colleagues he was saddened by her resignation the law. By the law. I have never from across the spectrum, because we want voters and he did not agree from across the spectrum. That the government wasnt heard that before. We are in a putting serious effort into getting a new deal. Situation now where no one can trust heres what amber rudd had to say on the andrew marr while he is in place what will show this morning. I think people are i believe that he is trying happen. The chancellor sajid javid missing that point. Its not about individuals who may to get a deal with the eu. Said the government is in brexit talks and would obey the law, but have lost their Party Position i am just saying what i have seen in government, is in the Parliamentary Party this that there is this huge machine the uk would still leave the eu on week, its about the sort preparing for no deal, which is of voters that we represent fine. And if they are not voting you might expect in the balance the uk would still leave the eu on the 31st of october. Of course we for the conservative party, will obey the law. After that between getting a deal and no deal 50 50 in terms of work. Council the Prime Minister would ask but it is not that. There is long term damage. It is like 80 or 90 foran council the Prime Minister would ask for an extension because that is the of government time going into law of this country. We will not preparing for a no deal and the absence of actually trying change our policy. How does this to work to get a deal. We know the Prime Minister has been it is what has driven 21 under some pressure to reverse this of my colleagues to rebel and i decision to remove the whip need tojoin them. So you think honestly work . It is baffling. You say you from you and other mps. He is trying to get a deal. Do you think he will will obey the law but not do that change his mind on that . What deal . We have not seen any evidence i think he prefers to get a deal. One thing, it is hard to see how you of that, and i suspect what deal is the question. What the Prime Minister is wrestling well, that is the question. Get out of that. Dominic raab has with is his own feelings and you have no idea . Said the government will not test about losing colleagues i have no idea because what we know and i suspect, well, i am pretty sure, that he will be is that Angela Merkel what the law required. As for boris and the eu have said, very unhappy about it. Give us your proposal. Johnson, he enters yet another none of this is good in anyway. And we have not given them a proposal. Crucial week one more mp down, but he is trying to contrast where is all the work that needs that with immense rating that he is in control of the party to be done to try and still insisting brexit will happen and some are urging him come up with alternative next month. That the only way he can demonstrate arrangements, to show where the control is by taking actions landing place is, all that work that such as this. And helen is with me now. Needs to go behind it . I think there are other and instead we are just and, helen, a very ways of demonstrating hearing, we are going to significant week ahead . Control through persuasion, get a deal. And working with a government there is very little evidence of it. Yes, starting tomorrow the bill to which is now at a minority in parliament means you cannot are you going to leave politics . Block a no deal brexit is due to get bludgeon your way through. No, iam not leaving politics. You have to work, you have im actually not leaving royal assent to become law. Boris to look for compromise both the conservative party. Johnson is set to try and have within parliament and in terms what i am doing is surrendering the whip another go at getting an early alongside my colleagues, the 21 others, in order to stand with them. Of the negotiations with the eu. I dont think. General election before the crucial i know i couldnt carry eu summit. Again as with last week on in the conservative party at such a high level and see 21 of my colleagues who are good, he is expected to fail because this resolute determination moderate people who also want for everything seemingly to be done on our terms, a deal, opposition parties say they will not excluded from it. Vote for it. They want to make sure otherwise we will walk away, and ijust needed to and people are being told that they are not negotiating move and stand by them. A no deal brexit is completely if they are not bowing i hope that we will impossible before they agreed to go to our demands, i do not think this all be returned before to the polls. This week is the week is the right strategy. The general election so we can all stand as conservatives. I am a conservative. Parliament will get formally i believe the conservative suspended, prorogued to use the party is a force for technical term. We dont know good in our great country and i exactly when that will happen but it would like to see us in government. Now on bbc news, the travel show could be as early as tomorrow, we have been before. Is in switzerland at the worlds we have done great things. Biggest wine festival. In your letter to the Prime Minister certainly no later than thursday. Helen, thank you very much indeed. You said, i no longer coming up on this weeks programme believe that leaving with a deal helen, thank you very much indeed. Helen catt. Im in switzerland at one delays are expected of the worlds most colourful is the governments main objective. On British Airways flights later that is quite close to accusing today ahead of a pilots strike, the government of lying to the british people. Which is due to begin at midnight. I am not accusing them of lying. The dispute is over and crazy wine festivals. Pay and conditions. I am observing what i have seen. Most ba flights taking off from the uk on monday and tuesday i am saying that 80 to 90 have been cancelled. Plus ill be finding out of the work that i can see going on our Business Correspondent katie why the natural wine prescott has the details. Movement is on the rise. On the eu relationship thats really nice. Is about preparation for no deal. For the first time in the companys it is about disproportion. History, British Airways pilots when this was first are refusing to fly. The pilots union says they accepted entered into after boris pay freezes when ba made losses, theme music plays. Hello and welcome to the travel and they now want to share show, with me, lucy hedges. Johnson became Prime Minister, in its success. They want to see a greater size most people would have expected, of the £2 billion profit that ba made last year. Everybody would have expected, there to be a lot of work and trying to pilots have rejected their offer get a deal. A whole team of people trying of an 11. 5 pay rise to build those relationships, over the next three years, alternative relationships. And the strike is expected to cost i havent seen that. The company £40 million per day. But British Airways says its a generous offer thats been accepted by the rest of staff did the cabinet know the legal on the airline. Advice and prorogation . Of course, in the middle we werentcirculated it now. Of all of this are the passengers i can only speculate. I asked for it and i 300,000 of them are being affected over the next few days. Was not giving it. They were warned about these strikes it was only on how it folded into weeks ago, and the company says that the Northern Ireland bill most have been rebooked. And i was told that i would get it but after persistently asking for it but, for many, thatjourney i still hasnt been smooth. Hadnt got it when i resigned. Got a text message out of the blue earlier i spoke to our political stating that my flight correspondent, helen catt, was cancelled, and it didnt give about the significance of amber rudds resignation. Any explanation whatsoever itjust gave a telephone number having her on side, to call, which i did do, on his team as it were, did really boost the view and couldnt get through on the phone. Of Boris Johnsons leadership spent basically all evening. And his Brexit Strategy and the fact didnt sleep very well because ijust thought my holiday was in ruins. That you heard her go any passengers who are affected by the strikes are entitled to a refund or a rebooking for both, both his handling with British Airways of the party and that stark figure or another airline. Of saying that 80 to 90 of government effort is going towards a no deal and katie is here now. Brexit, she believes, not towards actually getting a deal. Well, that could well harm him, certainly among those who share amber rudds views. How significant is the disruption the big worry for him is if it does unsettle more unhappy tories. Likely to be . When you are talking and we know there are some. And inspire them to follow suit. About cancelling 1700 flights over it will be interesting to see the reaction beyond westminster. Two days, there is bound to be a again, i think that 80 to 90 figure knock on effect, even though we are told most of those passengers have will cut through in some places. 110w told most of those passengers have now made other arrangements. The advice today is if you are taking a also i think there will be a group of people, of leave backers, British Airways flight, do check who look at this and think, online before you fly because there this means borisjohnson is serious. May well be some disruption today amber rudd has never wanted to leave and wednesday when the strike really and therefore it is just removing another remain impediment. Finishes. Going forward, i spoke to itll be interesting to see how that falls outside westminster. The union and British Airways this interesting to see happens next. Morning, both sides say they are willing to talk but havent heard from the other side which tells you the no deal legislation all you need to know about how passed by mps, that gets royal assent tomorrow. Acrimonious the relationship is at the moment. Another flight acrimonious the relationship is at the moment. Anotherflight is scheduled for the 27th of september. Suggestions that the government may not abide by it even though katie, thank you. It is the law of the land. President trump says he has called what does happen next . Off peace negotiations tomorrow this bill which actually with the taliban after they admitted they were behind a recent attack sparked all of this controversy last week that was a reason that the 21 that killed an american soldier in afghanistan. The bombing on thursday mps who rebelled and voted killed 12 people. For it were sacked from President Trump has been seeking the conservative party, to negotiate a us exit that gets signed off from afghanistan after 18 by the queen tomorrow. It gets royal assent. That compels borisjohnson, years of war. If he doesnt have a brexit deal 0ur chief international by the 19th of october, correspondent lyse doucet to ask for an extension from the eu. Is in the Afghan Capital kabul. Theres been some debate about whether or not he will do that. We also know that tomorrow just give us some of the background he will try to go for an early to this. What a diplomatic bombshell election on october the 15. He is likely to fail by President Trump. It had been because the opposition say they will not give that to him. Widely anticipated that any day now John Mcdonnell explained why he would announce that there was a labour wont be backing it to andrew marr earlier. Deal between the us and the afghan we dont believe that we can pin him taliban which would begin to end down and i dont trust him an inch and i dont think anyone does. Americas longest war and put afghanistan on the road to peace. I think we have got a Prime Minister now who says he wont even abide instead, in these extraordinary tweets that he posted in what was by the law, by the law. The middle of the night here in i have never heard that before. Afghanistan, he revealed he had invited taliban leaders and the we are in a situation now where no one can trust afg ha n invited taliban leaders and the afghan president to his president ial while he is in place what can happen. Retreat camp david. But now it was so we have got to use every mechanism we possibly can all off. That ended nearly a year of to rule out a no deal and that is what we are trying to legislate on as best we can, talks with the taliban so it is an but also once we have got to that extraordinary turn of events. Situation we can then, i think, President Trump cited one attack have a general election. That killed an american soldier, but you heard John Mcdonnell say afg ha ns a re that the Prime Minister had said that killed an american soldier, but afghans are living with almost daily he would not obey the law. Attacks by the taliban and welcome this move by President Trump, saying until the taliban stop this violence there can be no moves towards peace. This morning sajid javid denied that. He was equally insistent that thank you. England are struggling Boris Johnson wouldnt resign on the final day of the fourth ashes test. And that he wouldnt be asking they started the day on 18 2 for that extension and he wouldnt but since then they have lost really explain how the government jason roy and also ben stokes, handing pat cummins his fourth intended to square that circle. The law talks about october the 19th wicket of the innings. In case there is no deal agreed england now havejonny bairstow in that council meeting. Should we get to that position and joe denly at the crease. We will look at our options. Of course we will obey the law. They need another 296 runs to win. Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu said the Prime Minister would ask it was a dream come true for an extension. We will not change our policy. After beating Serena Williams our policy is clear. How does this work . In the us open final it is completely baffling. To win her first major tennis title. If the law says one thing its the fourth time in a row and you are saying the government that Serena Williams has is going to obey the law lost a grand slam final. But we are not going to do that one adam wild was watching. Thing, it is hard to see how you will get out of that. Its been 20 years since serena the government will not change its policy and we will be williams first won the us open. Consistent, obey the law and stick back then, Bianca Andreescu to our policy. There is a lot of days between now hadnt even been born. Yet here they were, together, opponents and october the 19th and we will be on the games biggest stage. Andreescu chasing williams, working full on until october the 31st to either leave but williams now chasing history, with a deal or leave with no deal. And that is what the new york crowd so both sides, it looks like they are not really moving, had all gathered to see. Not giving an inch. What they actually saw was History Parliament is back tomorrow. Of a different sort. Well have to see andreescu still a teenager, what happens this week. Helen catt there, our but with an icy calmness belying her years. Political correspondent. And, while she was still finding her way, williams, ive been discussing what will it seems, was losing hers. Happen next with sir ed davey. He mistakes, frustration. Andreescu suddenly on the brink. Told me that if the government does but, having saved a championship disobey the law blocking a nodal point, suddenly williams regained her composure, brexit, that would be one of the most damaging things do happen to oui most damaging things do happen to as the us crowd lost theirs. Our democracy. But the fightback as spectacular lets be clear, for a british as it was short lived government not to abide by the rule andreescu champion at her of law would be one very first attempt. Of the most damaging williams wait for another things to ever happen grand slam goes on, but the game now to our constitution and our democracy. Has a new superstar. And i simply cannot believe that adam wild, bbc news. The conservative party, the civil service, parliament, cabinet colleagues would allow the prime you can see more on all minister to take such of todays stories on the bbc news channel. A damaging step. The next news on bbc one is at 6. 35pm. 00 09 51,206 4294966103 13 29,430 bye for now. We heard this morning from the foreign secretary dominic raab that they would push the law to the limit. I am afraid he is a lawyer. What he is trying to say, he is trying to bend the law and escape the law. That is outrageous from the foreign secretary. I hope Dominic Raabs constituents were listening to him saying that the government, the British Government is going to try and bend the law. What a message from the Prime Minister and the foreign secretary this extreme brexit government is bringing our country into disrepute and people who think they can trust Boris Johnson, given his career, that is not a very wise position to take. But if they think they can trust borisjohnson with our democracy, with our rule of law, they should now think again. He is a disgraceful Prime Minister. They are behaving disgracefully and i am looking forward to the general election when we can kick them out. Sir ed davey of the liberal democrats. Sir ed davey of the liberal democrats. The liberal democrats have picked up their third mp in a week. Angela smith, who defected from the labour party earlier this year, has left the independent group for change to join up withjo swinsons party. She described the lib dems as the Strongest Party to stop brexit. the labour mp, john mann says hes stepping down after 18 years in parliament and has launched a strong attack onjeremy corbyn. In an interview with the sunday times, he accused the labour leader of giving the green light to anti semites in the party. Hell take up the full time post as the governments anti semitism tsar. Meanwhile, the business secretary, andrea leadsom, has said the conservatives will break convention by fielding a candidate against the commons speaker, john bercow, at the next general election. Traditionally, the major parties do not contest the speakers seat, but mr bercows handling of recent brexit debates has angered ministers. Simonjones reports. Order 0rder. In the seat for the crucial vote. The ayes to the right, 327. Noes to the left, 299. When mps backed the bill aimed at blocking a no deal brexit at the end of october. Butjohn bercow is now underfire from the business secretary. Andrea leadsom says that by allowing mps to use a procedure to trigger emergency debates as a means of taking over the timetable, he has permitted a flagrant abuse of parliamentary process. In the mail on sunday, the business secretary writes. The speaker is an mp who stands in general elections but is usually unopposed by the Major Political parties. Mrs leadsom is warning that the conservatives will defy convention and field a candidate in his constituency of buckingham in the next vote. There is no love lost between mrs leadsom and mr bercow. Last year, he was alleged to have labelled her stupid, although he said he muttered the word to describe how he felt about the way the government had scheduled commons business. He is yet to comment on the latest criticisms. Simon jones, bbc news. Ships and aircraft are helping to move thousands of people from the islands in the bahamas worst hit by Hurricane Dorian. 0ne cruise ship with more than a thousand evacuees has arrived in florida. Aid agencies say the situation on Great Abaco Island is desperate, with residents unable to find food or clean water. At the moment, the death toll in the bahama is 43 but is expected to increase with hundreds still missing. Earlier i spoke to darren tosh, the executive director at samaritans purse a christian humanitarian Aid Organization that has airlifted an emergency Field Hospital and a medical team to the bahamas. Over the past week we have been airlifting supplies straight into the bahamas. We have our own aircraft so we have been able to deliver at least five rotations of relief. There are 30 tonnes worth of shelter supplies that are now in the country. Desalinisation units, which are essential for getting fresh water to people. The situation on the ground requires that we end up getting people into shelter and with freshwater. Equally, we have been working with the ministry of health and the World Health Organization to deliver and emergency Field Hospital. The Field Hospital is up and running today. We can report that they can be taken up to 100 patients per day. 0n grand bahama island the hospital is unable to operate so this Field Hospital is providing essential care for those who have been rescued and need recovery. 0ur for those who have been rescued and need recovery. Our team is active today and trying to do our best to be able to get relief supplies into the most remote areas. The situation is tough. We are having to use barges and our own helicopter to deliver to the most remote areas to ensure people are getting life saving supplies. Ensure people are getting lifesaving supplies. Give us a picture. We are seeing some of the aerial shots of the devastation. Give us a sense of the devastation and destruction and the level of need. You have to imagine this was the largest storm to ever hit in the atla ntic the largest storm to ever hit in the atlantic and impact over the bahamas. The devastation is absolute in some areas. Houses are bahamas. The devastation is absolute in some areas. Houses are being wiped clean. There is no infrastructure. The storm swamps any fresh water and the National Sewage supply so we have a horrible situation for those who have survived and the critical days are right now for us to get emergency supplies to be able to save lives over the next couple of days. The challenge is access. Roads are covered. The airstrips are covered. The airport in the north is under water still. So it is becoming a great challenge to be able to reach people and get them emergency supplies. Are you worried about disease . Of course, after a div element like this when you end up having such unsafe water, you have a mix of bodies and destroyed crops. There is horrible disease can develop after an an event like this. Which is why we have the Field Hospital working with the Bahamian Ministry of health. These are critical days and this will be a long term recovery problem for the bahamas. This wont be resolved over the next weeks and months. This will bea the next weeks and months. This will be a massive Recovery Programme for the country. The death toll is 43 officially at the moment. There is still an awful lot of people unaccounted for. Absolutely. The World Health Organization and the government there has projected into the hundreds, if not thousands. We know people havent been fully recovered yet so the access into some areas, we are uncertain as to how the level of destruction and life loss in some areas on some of the smaller islands. That is darren tosh, executive director of the aid agency samaritans purse. The headlines on bbc news. After her resignation from the cabinet and the conservative whip in Parliament Amber rudd attacks borisjohnsons handling of brexit. British Airways Pilots begin a two day strike at midnight in their dispute about pay and conditions. Passengers are being advised not to go to airports and ba. Says most customers have made alternative arrangements. Heres our Business Correspondent, katie prescott. For the first time in the companys history, British Airways pilots are refusing to fly. The pilots union say after working with ba through lean times, they now want a greater share of the company profits. It made £2 billion last year. They have rejected an offer of an 11. 5 payrise over the next few years, and British Airways says it is a generous offer and that their pilots already get world class salaries. Of course, in the middle of all of this are the customers. They were warned about these strikes weeks ago, and the company says most have been rebooked, but for many thatjourney has not been smooth. I got a text message out of the blue stating that my flight was cancelled, and it didnt give any explanation whatsoever. Itjust gave a telephone number to call, which i did do. I couldnt get through on the phone, spent basically all evening, didnt sleep very well because i thought my holiday was in ruins. President trump says hes called off peace negotiations with the taliban after an attack that killed 12 people, including a us soldier, in the Afghan Capital, the announcement via twitter comes just days after the american envoy to afghanistan reached a draft peace deal with the group. Mr trump said a previously secret meeting with taliban leaders and the afghan president , due to take place at the president s camp david retreat on sunday has been cancelled. 0ur chief International Correspondent lyce doucet has been following the story. Stunning, in so many ways. It is the middle of the night in the United States and if officials had been tipped off about these tweets, they would be scrambling, i think, as people here in afghanistan are scrambling to make sense of this. The prize of all prize, inviting the taliban to the president ial retreat, camp david, before theyve even signed a deal with the United States, which is said to be a deal in principle, before they have proven their commitment to peace. It is absolutely astonishing. So the big question now is, the secret summit has been cancelled, according to President Trumps tweets. What happens to this painstaking process of negotiation . Nearly a year of talks between the us envoy and his team and taliban negotiators in the gulf state of qatar. They were making progress but the feeling everywhere here from the president ial palace to impoverished afghan villages is, why was there so much talk of peace . Is there even more war . That is killing our hopes of peace. A bomb has been found close to the border in Northern Ireland. The Police Service of Northern Ireland say the improvised device was discovered near the Police Station in strabane in county tyrone. It was found during a security alert which began yesterday morning. The chief constable of the psni, simon byrne, said it was a callous attempt to kill or maim police officers. A man has been arrested under terrorism legislation. Controversial local elections are under way in moscow and other russian towns and cities. Earlier president putin cast his vote in the capital. The vote follows some of the biggest protests seen in years in moscow against the exclusion of many opposition candidates wanting to stand in the poll. 0ur moscow correspondent Sarah Rainsford is at an election booth in the capital. Voting is under way at this polling station in moscow. A theatre in the city centre that has been converted for this local election. The turnout has been fairly slow. A trickle of people this morning. This entire local election doesnt normally attract much attention but this yet this has been different. That is because there had been mass protest because there had been mass protest because of the selections over the past few weeks. A summer of discontent, some people have been calling it. The biggest protest that russia has seen in years. That is because real, genuine opposition candidates were excluded from registration. They were not allowed to run for this parliament. So whilst there are ballot papers and signs and posters like this at all the polling stations show the candidates, the opposition say there is no real choice. The key opposition figure here in russia has called for smart voting. For people to vote for the candidate most likely to oust or to beat their candidate from the ruling party, united russia. The question is how effective that can be . Some people simply cant vote for a communist for a national list. The authorities are doing everything they possibly can to make this an election that brings people to the polls and to make it as fun as possible, with activities here for all the family, from balloon twisting to face painting. I will moscow corresponded. Thousands of pro democracy activists have marched to the us consulate in hong kong to urge america to support their bid for political reform. Some of them carried the us flag , the stars and stripes , and called for President Trump to liberate the territory. China claims the United States is orchestrating the protests, which have been going on for three months. 0ur correspondent in hong kong, steve mcdonell, is following developments. Todays protest in hong kong threatens to drive something of a diplomatic wedge in between beijing and washington. That is because, in their tens and thousands, demonstrators have come out calling on washington to take a tougher stance on their city. They Want Congress to pass a bill which would mean that, in order for hong kong to enjoy this special trading status, the special trading privileges from the United States, they would have to pass an annual human rights test. Now, this has bipartisan support, so there is some chance that such a bill is going to pass in washington. Butjust to make sure, in their thousands, activists are marching to the United States consulate. It is somewhat of a risky strategy, because imagine if hong kong does not pass this annual human rights test, and loses it special trading status in north america, it would drive the economy down and that could lead to an even bigger crackdown from beijing. It is something of a risky strategy. However, in the minds of the pro democracy movement, they believe it is worth leveraging some of this momentum that they have and some of the concern being generated in washington, as people have seen this political crisis and have wondered whether or not the government in hong kong really enjoys the political autonomy it is supposed to have. The other thing we are seeing here today five demands, not one less, they are calling out. Itjust shows even though carrie lams administration has now officially canned this much hated extradition bill, which would have allowed people to be sent to mainland chinese courts, controlled by the communist party, that is not enough. They say one is gone, four more to go. If the government in hong kong hoped that by taking the bill off the table there would be no more large protests here, as you can see, that is not the case.
