Only by a tiny fraction, but in the decades ahead, as the planet heats up, more ice here will melt, with potentially catastrophic implications right around the world. For low lying countries like bangladesh, even a small rise in sea level could pose a real danger. But, if the melting accelerates, florida and many other places will be severely affected during the course of this century. But, in the worst case scenario, parts of Eastern England and dozens of cities around the world could actually go under unless new defences are built for them. For the people of greenland, the flow of ice is increasing. It is a spectacular sight, and a sign of a warmer climate that would be helpful, especially for farmers. We find these cattle grazing on the shore beside the icebergs. But these Young Greenlanders say theyre worried that the more the ice here melts, the more flooding there will be in other parts of the world. It is scary because, well, we have no control of it, you know . And it is a lot of water. If this continues, it will someday just cover the whole country. So what can be done . Well, a new forest might help. The scientists who study greenlands ice hope these trees will soak up the carbon from all their flights. I was criticised online for having a high carbon footprint, and i thought, ok, thats legitimate, but i can do something about it, because i was aware of people planting trees here in south greenland. And i got involved, and we started to make it happen. Planting trees wont stop more ice breaking into the ocean. Only action on a global scale could make any serious difference. And, in the meantime, the melting here means seas everywhere are bound to rise. David shukman, bbc news, greenland. Now its time for the weather with chris fawkes. Hello again. We are in the middle of a very changeable pattern, one day relatively mild, the next quite cool relatively mild, the next quite cool. One day relatively mild, the next a bit wetter. For theres wetter, a warm front moving in across the uk is going to be bringing some rain, especially to Northern Ireland, scotland, and ultimately across the north of england. With that there could be some low cloud for a time but the winds will be coming around to a south westerly direction, so it is not going to be quite as cold as it felt on wednesday. Temperatures up to 18 degrees in belfast, 17 in edinburgh. Further south, similar temperatures to what we have seen over recent days, some dry weather and sunshine. Through thursday night this area of rain moving across scotla nd this area of rain moving across scotland and Northern Ireland is a cold front. That will sink its way southwards overnight into Northern England in the north of wales. Some mist and fog patches over the Higher Ground ahead of that system. Some showers working into northern scotla nd showers working into northern scotland as we go through the latter pa rt scotland as we go through the latter part of the night and the first part of friday morning. Our cold front continues to work southwards on friday. A mixture of sunshine and showers following, some of the showers following, some of the showers could be quite heavy, but notice the winds coming down from a north westerly direction. And with that, down go the temperatures. Isa 15 degrees in belfast, iii that, down go the temperatures. Isa 15 degrees in belfast, 1a in an, 17 degrees for london and cardiff. The weekend will start off with northerly winds and quite a few of us northerly winds and quite a few of us will have a dry start to the weekend. But there will be some showers around, so not dry everywhere. One or two places will see a little bit of rain. Temperatures 13 19 degrees, so quite a spread. 19 degrees is where we have those sunnier moments, so south wales one of the more favoured spots for that. More sunshine to go round on sunday, away from the north west, where south westerly winds will be bringing a return of milder air. 17 degrees in belfast, but it will tend to cloud over as the day goes by. So another area of low pressure is just to the west of the uk, and from monday this one is going to be bringing another area of rain eastwards across the country. This raina rain eastwards across the country. This rain a cold front. The winds going back to a north westerly direction. You know the script. Down go the temperatures, hires a 15 degrees in belfast. The weather is going to chop and change a little bit over the next few days. Back to what is going on side of the atlantic, this of course is hurricane dorian. It has been bringing catastrophic damage to the bahamas, but thankfully the storm is moving away. Hurricane force winds are likely across the south west of the United States are unlikely. Were not going to see the scale of devastation we have seen in the bahamas. Anyway, the remnants dorian ultimately end up in an area of low pressure in iceland. At the same time, look at this. This area of cloud has been developing over the last 2a hours. This is now a Tropical Storm, Tropical Storm gabrielle. It will move westwards away from the african coast into the mid atlantic. Here it is spinning around, gaining energy. Ultimately it will get drawn up towards the uk, an area of tropical, moist air. That will probably bring outbreaks of rain, but the type of weather we get from that is will open to some uncertainty. Dorian unlikely to affect the uk, but the remnants of gabrielle could. How that gets picked up will determine exactly how wet and windy the weather gets next week. The models are likely to flip around. Some could be very windy, others not very windy. We will see what happens over the next few days. Hello, this is bbc news. We will be taking a look at tomorrow mornings papers in a moment. First the headlines borisjohnson has faced a double defeat in the commons after mps turned down his motion for a general election. The ayes to the right 329. The noes to the left 299. Earlier, mps backed a bill aimed at blocking a no deal brexit if the Prime Minister hadnt agreed a plan with the eu ahead of the 31 october deadline. Peers are now examining the bill to block no deal. If approved, borisjohnson will be forced to ask the eu for another brexit delay. Also more than £13 billion of investment announced in areas including health, education and the police in england. The chancellor says he has turned the page on austerity. Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are deputy Political Editor at the spectator katy balls and political commentator lance price. Thank you so much for being with us on another dramatic day at westminster. Most of tomorrows front pages are already in. The metros coverage of Boris Johnsons plight seems to be summed up in its front page photo of an exasperated man. The paper points out that he has lost his first three votes as Prime Minister, mps have backed a delay to take a no deal brexit off the table, and he has failed in a bid to call an october general election. There is a similar take in the guardian, captured in its headline cornered johnson suffers triple commons defeat. That term, cornered, pops up again in the is treatment of the story. The times features a worried looking borisjohnson and his aide Dominic Cummings, pointing out that the commons has ordered the Prime Minister to seek a brexit extension. The daily mirror simply has him as britains worst pm since the last one, complete with a small picture of theresa may on its front page. The daily express has the conservative leader calling on people power to ensure a general election is held. The daily mail carries borisjohnsons accusation that mr corbyn has chickened out of an election. And finally, the sun has the labour leader in a chicken suit, to ram home the point. So lets kick off, and start off with the guardian. Johnson suffers triple commons defeat. Is he cornered, is he lost, or is this strategy going his way . Do we know what the strategy is . |j strategy going his way . Do we know what the strategy is . I dont think we know what the exact strategy is. If you look at what Boris Johnson is doing in the commons, i dont think that Boris Johnson doing in the commons, i dont think that borisjohnson ever thought he would have that long a time before having to have an early election anyway. The working majority he inherited from theresa may was very small. The by election reduced it to one, and he lost it this week quite significantly because he himself withdrew the whip from lots of his conservative mps after they rebelled on the brexit vote. So you dont get the impression that borisjohnson himself has been working that hard to keep a majority for commons business. I thinkjohnsons overall strategy is all about getting a majority in a general election. And he thinks he can win an election, is that your view . Obviously he wouldnt want an election if he didnt think he could win it. Ultimately i think the conservative party is out of choices on this. The idea of delaying is anathema to the conservative party so the least worst option is a general election. Ido worst option is a general election. I do think it is risky for the party but i think they think probably that if you look at the people around him, Dominic Cummings, lots of vote leave staff, these are people who specialise in campaigning, so in a way it is what they like to do. And all of his actions i suppose you could say have been bold since he got into downing street, whether you like them or not. Is that because he is trying to out brexit party the brexit party and out Nigel Farage Nigel farage, because if he is going to win an election that is what he has to do . And before parliament returned, he had the opportunity to go around the country and make all sorts of pronouncements. He didnt have to face boats in the house of commons and was able to present himself both as a fresh face and a very strong leader, because that strength wasnt being challenged. But now, of course, he has come up against the immovable object of his lack of majority in the house of commons, and some of the shine is starting to come off his presentation of himself as a strong leader. You are absolutely right that what he is seeking to do is to minimise the threat from the brexit party and present himself as mr brexit. The danger for that is, party and present himself as mr brexit. The dangerfor that is, and the reason i think his tactics are very unwise for a conservative party leader, is that in order to do that he has kicked out of the party, certainly the parliamentary party, people who a lot of wavering voters responded very well, people like ken clarke and rory stewart, who made a name for themselves in the Election Campaign, and in order to go after those hardline brexit votes he is in danger of alienating those more one nation moderate conservatives who have been part of the coalition that supported every conservative government up until now. Lets go to the times. You were talking about Dominic Cummings, a controversial advisor from vote leave. Is he behind this whole strategy, do you think, ive kicking out rebel mps . Ultimately Boris Johnson is the leader, isnt he . Ithink ultimately Boris Johnson is the leader, isnt he . I think if he goes along with a decision, borisjohnson is responsible for it. I do think that in terms of coming up with the strategy, Dominic Cummings plays a significant role in that. He is not the only vote leave staff at number ten. Dominic cummings is the most senior aide and when it comes to brexit he is really the driving force in a lot of this. You read the extensive blogs he wrote before he re entered government and number ten and he is pretty disdainful of lots of mps, including brexiteers, members of the European Research group, who he sees as self serving. And there is a sense that someone like Dominic Cummings might have been, i suppose, like Dominic Cummings might have been, isuppose, less like Dominic Cummings might have been, i suppose, less concerned about withdrawing the whip from them. That is not to say it is his idea, but i did speak to one rebel who has had the weapon withjohn idea, but i did speak to one rebel who has had the weapon with john who say they did trust Boris Johnson when he was making his brexit promises to them that he wanted to get a deal. The problem was they didnt trust Dominic Cummings, and they thought he was in charge. Lets go to the telegraph. They have hypocrite corbyn rejecting election to break the deadlock. How difficult is this for labour, the question about when they support an election . There seems to have been a little bit of a division betweenJeremy Corbyn and, for example, sir keir starmer, about the exact timing of an election and when they would support an election. Yes, so the opponents of Boris Johnson support an election. Yes, so the opponents of borisjohnson have, for the first couple of days that parliament has been back, remained remarkably united in their tactics. It has all been about stopping the no deal prospect through this bill which has been going through parliament. But of course, they are divided amongst themselves. The parties, whether it is labour, the lib dems, the snp and the others, have different objectives. But within the labor party there is a real debate going on about whether tactics should be. There has been shifting movement that all through today. Now, as we get to the end of the day, it seems the view is coalescing around the idea that borisjohnson should be made to stu in his ownjuices until the borisjohnson should be made to stu in his own juices until the 31 october deadline has passed, and therefore if this bill does go through all its stages, he has to go back because that is what the law says, to brussels, to ask for an extension. But it did look as if Jeremy Corbyns initial instinct was to allow that to be a general election before that date. And of course, it is difficult for him because he has called for a general election pretty much every day since the last election, and he has to suffer a little bit of embarrassment if he is going to allow, through his own action or inaction, a conservative Prime Minister to remain in office. The express has borisjohnson urging people power for an election. The express has borisjohnson urging people powerfor an election. The snp do want an election and he has another way of making it happen. One of the options he has is a bill that says notwithstanding this at we want to call an election and you need a house of commons majority, a smaller figure. And you could potentially get there. You would have to check that all the conservative mps are willing to go for it. And the other problem with that plan is that it would be amendable. So people could add amendments and if you dont have a working majority, you cannot predict what would be attached. Looking at the son. As i was referring to earlier, this chicken angle. I suppose that is the trouble, as you alluded to earlier, that is the charge that will come the way of Jeremy Corbyn, that having called foran Jeremy Corbyn, that having called for an election suddenly he does not wa nt for an election suddenly he does not want one. And you know a general election is on the way as soon as the son has a chicken on the front page. It is a standard part of campaigning these days did it parliament will rise next month and whatever the outcome of all of these, the general Election Campaign will have started because you can bet your Bottom Dollar that during the four or five weeks the parliament does not sit, Boris Johnson will be going around the country and so willJeremy Corbyn going around saying the same things they would be saying if there were a campaign. So we know there is an election sometime before christmas, either in october or november and i am afraid the bad news for our viewers and everybody else around the country is that that politicking and the partisan way in which the newspapers including the sun will behave during the election will kick off very soon. Patterson indeed. And the mirror in keeping with that flavour, britain s west Prime Minister says the mirror since the last one with an insert picture of theresa may. Very different Prime Ministers in style and substance. Theresa may. Very different Prime Ministers in style and substancem was interesting today at the first pmq for borisjohnson was interesting today at the first pmq for Boris Johnson and later in the chamber, you almost had the sense that Jeremy Corbyn was changing his perception of theresa may with the gift of hindsight. Actually, theresa may came with a detailed brexit plan compared to borisjohnson sewed detailed brexit plan compared to Boris Johnson sewed quite detailed brexit plan compared to borisjohnson sewed quite different approaches and some theresa may allies, when you look at what is happening in the commons, they have a sense of i told you so, i told you it was difficult to command a group. I suppose there are some mps now thinking they should have voted for the deal. There are many labour mps who regret and in hindsight would like to bring it back. I do think probably broadly speaking in the tory party, i think it got to such a point of drift under theresa may that even though it was seen as chaotic i dont think they are missing the old regime just yet. Chaotic i dont think they are missing the old regime just yetm this rhetoric, it has not been toned down since he got into power, calling Jeremy Corbyn a big girl s blouse. He cannot help himself. And there was someone parliamentary language going on in the commons today. I dont think any of that reflects well on the conservative party. The public can look, theresa may has been looking rather relaxed and perhaps a secret smile to herself over the difficulties that borisjohnson is herself over the difficulties that Boris Johnson is finding. Herself over the difficulties that borisjohnson is finding. And david cameron, remember him . Hes to bring out his book, the man who started it all with his referendum. There will be riots on the street outside. It isa be riots on the street outside. It is a reminder that you will soon have to make a decision, what kind of conservative party will we be left with with those three in a row and now Boris Johnson left with with those three in a row and now borisjohnson taking it towards the far right towards an English Nationalist Party and kicking our Popular Figures like English Nationalist Party and kicking our popularfigures like ken clarke. Finally, the financial times. Highlighting sajid javid and his spending announcements. But this is the whole tory election plan, is it . To get rid of the mantle of austerity and say we are not part of austerity and say we are not part of austerity anymore and to nullify labour claim that there. It has been overshadowed as usual by brexit. You do see the tories setting out there still and we spoke about a shift but what is interesting is that on domestic policy, people are divided on brexit but on domestic policy the conservative party under Boris Johnson almost wants to remain in the centre. But with a lot of funding and trying to get popular policies and in a way to do that, to try and win over the former labour vote rs try and win over the former labour voters and bring them into the tory party. I think the spending splurge by conservative standards, combined by conservative standards, combined by moving towards brexit, they are thinking of the labour leave seats and how to get them. Who would win and how to get them. Who would win an election . You cannot fatten a pig on market day and convince people that the conservative party is pushing it. Who will win a general election . I have no idea. Political loyalties will split on both sides. And whether you are for or anti brexit is more important than whether or not you are a traditional conservative or labour voter. Thats it for the papers tonight. Dont forget you can see the front pages of the papers online on the bbc news website. Its all there for you seven days a week at bbc. Co. England made a promising start on the first day of the fourth ashes test at old trafford, taking two early wickets. Get your ben stokes scarves now £8 only on the scarves talk about a tough act to follow ben stokes scarves and even jack leach costumes, a happy reminder of englands heroic win at headingley. Surely old trafford couldnt match that drama. Well, briefly, it tried its best, as stuart broad set about ramping up the decibels, australia soon 28 2 as england started in style. But then a familiar obstacle. Steve smith missed the last test after being hit by a jofra archer bouncer. Welcome back. But soon smith was calling the shots. Thats why hes the world number one batsman. Only the weather, seemingly, could stop him, a lengthy rain delay followed by a few wind powered problems. Beach balls, crisp packets, even the bails kept blowing off. Australia, though, seemed unruffled, as smith and Marnus Labuschagne reached half centuries before, finally, england finally found the breakthrough. Labuschagne bowled by craig overton. Smith, though, was still there for 60 at the close, once again australias rock. A testing day, then, for england and they still face a familiar question how do they get get out steve smith . Andy swiss, bbc news, old trafford. So the weather could have a big affect on the game. The players say they are struggling with conditions. You feel like you get to the crease and the wind hits you and pushes you forward and you have to shorten your stride and then it pushes you back so you have to jump back a few times because i did not feel confident. It is just because i did not feel confident. It isjust finding a because i did not feel confident. It is just finding a consistent rhythm that you would not normally have without that wind. You do get used to it that it is not something you wa nt to to it that it is not something you want to bother too much with. When they put the bails on you could see the stumps shake and it was a matter of time before they came off. It was quite windy out there. I have never played a game like this so it was very different. It was tough conditions for bowling.
